Title: REVIEWING THE SITUATION
Post by: bk on October 13, 2007, 12:26:14 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've reviewed the notes and the situation, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - is anyone beginning to feel that the fershluganah cows are NEVER coming home?

TOTD:
IMHO many of Mr Kings books could do with some serious editing!

My favourite is "Four Seasons" (I think that was the title).

From that book came the films "Stand By Me", "Apt Pupil" and "Shawshank Redemption".

I like the films of "Hearts in Atlantis", "Shawshank.." and "Stand By Me".

For me Mr King's Books are "airport reading". IMHO he does not have the literary talent of Clive Barker.

Post by: Edisaurus on October 13, 2007, 04:01:54 AM
I just work up from a dream--I was in some sort of musical review, and somehow was assigned the big showstopping number (kind of like, "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going..." some song that was originally belted out by a big African American woman who could really sing!). Not only had I never heard of this song, but I didn't even have a copy of it and couldn't borrow the musical director's because he was performing with it for the rest of the show. But I felt like I couldn't just leave the number out because it would disappoint everyone (even thought they would have been more disappointed to hear me sing!)

So, I wonder if this is the new version of the dream where you have to take the final for a class you never went to in a  subject you never studied?

I have been hanging out at HHW too long!

A fun thing to do with empty Kleenex boxes is to put a pingpong ball in there. A cat will amused him/herself for hours and it's fun to watch.

My favorite books: The Shining, The Stand

DR Cillaliz, I'm glad you had so much fun at the circus. It sounds like a magical evening, and what a cute picture!

I used to work for the conductor of the Atlanta Pops. His parents were circus performers in Europe (his mother did a balancing act on a horse), and on his mother's 100th birthday, we took her to see Ringling/Barnum & Bailey. During the show, the horseback act riders came over and presented her with a big bouquet of roses.

It was neat to see the expression on her face when they sang "Joyeux Anniversaire".

Our little French boy took us out to dinner at a fancy restaurant up the street. He ordered a nice bottle of champagne before Greg was able to tell him that I can't drink because of the medication I'm taking. (I did have a taste...)

His husband has had diverticulitis so it was good to be able to talk to him about what was going on with me. (Not that it has been diagnosed yet, but it seems too similar not to be!) He said that since his DH had the surgery 5 years ago, he hasn't had any problems since.

But I hope it doesn't come to that!

We were celebrating our move into the house (he gave up thinking we would ever move and actually has lived in this house before WE did, when he was here for a couple of weeks working) and the sale of his house in Paris. He made a huge profit, so he paid for dinner!

I stopped reading Stephen King after; actually during The Stand. However, up to that point I thought The Shining was his best novel. It was well written and an interesting read. I also enjoyed his collection of short stories. Some of them were really spooky to me at the time I read them.

And now off to work

Yes, there was a musical version of Carrie and it ranks as one of the biggest bombs in Broadway history. I didn't see it but I have been regaled with stories about the show. It began in London and the divine Barbara Cook played the Mother. She, wisely as I've heard, left the show before it came to Broadway. I have heard there is an ootleg bay opicay ideovay floating around New York.

Hello and Goodbye, DR Edisaurus!  I'm so sorry, I honestly didn't see you there this morning or I certainly would have said "hello" AND "goodbye"!

The truth is, when I got up this morning, my eyeglass frames fell apart!  So I was sitting here quinting at the screen and barely got some posts in.  I've got them taped together well enough to drive over to an optical store to see what they can do.

Good morning, all!   Yes, DR edi, DAVID COPPERFIELD was made into a second-rate musical in the early 1980s and conducted by my friend Larry Blank with orchestrations, I recall, by the late great Irwin Kostal.  The wonderful Carmen Matthews was Aunt Betsy and George S Irving Mr Micawber.

BK, have you called Mr Rodney Gilfry? He'd be good for a BAKER'S WIFE number like "Merci, Madame" or something else.  He said to call him about getting together and I left you his number.

Back to Toyland this morning, and after that, who knows?

TOD:
SALEM'S LOT is my favorite vampire story after DRACULA.
THE SHINING terrified me the first time I read it; it was a post-surgery gift from DR Ginny around 1977.
CARRIE is a better film than a book, I believe, but the musical was an abomination.
The short stories and DANSE MACABRE are quite wonderful

I think a lot of Mr King's later novels have good points but suffer from lack of pruning (I thought IT would never end!) that a good, or really strong, editor might have prevented.

I used to read a lot of Stephen King, but I haven't read anything by him since PET CEMETERY (SEMETERY?).

My favorite movie made from a Stephen King book gets unfairly forgotten, I think. It scared the bejeepers out of me - CUJO.

SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION and STAND BY ME are the best movie versions in terms of execution, but I still prefer CUJO.

And THE SHINING is a very effective film, too, even if it does veer from the original book. I can't wait for the Blu-ray disc of this to come out. It should look stupendous in high def.

Books:

THE STAND
CARRIE
THE SHINING
IT
THE DEAD ZONE

Film / Televsion:

THE STAND
THE DEAD ZONE
CARRIE
STAND BY ME
IT

I thought that, adaptation-wise, THE STAND was wonderful.  An incredible cast (Gary Sinese, Ruby Dee, Rob Lowe) a literate script, and enough time to tell the story, as it should be told.

I know that a lot of people really like Kubrick's THE SHINING, but it just doesn't work for me.  Bottom line: Jack Nicholson doesn't work for me.

TOD:  We just watched 1408 (well, I watched, Betsy left the room repeatedly when she got too scared, LOL).  Like a lot of Stephen King-based movies, it had its moments, but it just failed to add up to much for me (not even 13,  ;D ).  It's the way I felt about most of the film adaptations--scary moments here and there, but sadly lacking in overall coherence and motivation.

Would you like to know what we've been going through for the past couple of days.  REMODELING HELL, that's what.  They got the appliances "installed" on Thursday, only to realize after spending close to an hour getting the refrigerator leveled, that there was no power to the outlet for the refrigerator.  I could have told them that, had they bothered to ask.  So the contractor (who received a not very nice call from me) rushed over a 30 foot 3 pronged extension cord to deal with that.  Then they discovered that whoever demo'd the kitchen may have broken our dishwasher (the gasket bracket--try saying that three times fast--appeared to be loose).  Oy and double oy.

So anyhoo, yesterday was a mad rush to get everything else more or less done (the way this whole project has gone).  Within a three hour period, I had the countertop guy, the plumber and the electrician there, all trying to work in a very confined space.  The plumber had refused to hook up the icemaker, not because of plumbing issues, but because they refuse to move heavy appliances on hardwood floors for fear of damage.  And the electrician needed to check the outlet behind the fridge, too.  So I put masonite down on the floor and moved the damn fridge myself, to the very vocal objections of the contractor who stood there watching and whining.  Bottom line, we got the outlet working, the fridge plumbed, and with no damage to the floor, not that the contractor had anything to do with that.  And the first run of the dishwasher had no leaks, so I have my fingers crossed.

We now have a kitchen that's about 85% there--we still need cabinet doors and drawers, and the floors need one more coat of whatever they put on, but it's looking like a kitchen and it does look beautiful.  The slate countertops are absolutely gorgeous.  I'll post pics next week when it's all done.

TOD:
I had, in passing years, a fondness for Stephen King's novels until (as pointed out) they became quite bloated and in dire need of editing.  That said, I find the following novels noteworthy:
CARRIE
'SALEM'S LOT
THE SHINING
THE STAND

His take on the horror genre, DANSE MACABRE, is essential reading for the horror buff.

With Peter Straub he wrote two thrilling novels:
THE TALISMAN and BLACK HOUSE

The short story collections are also of interest:
NIGHT SHIFT
NIGHTMARES AND DREAMSCAPES

I liked, well, really liked Stephen King's contribution to THE X FILES, "Chinga," about a killer doll, not at all like Chuckie.

The films:
THE DEAD ZONE
CARRIE
MISERY
CAT'S EYE
CREEPSHOW
THE RUNNING MAN
THE DARK HALF
SECRET WINDOW

I have no use for either adaptation of King's THE SHINING.

Well, I'm already rushing around to get ready for rehearsal, so...  And after rehearsal today, I will be attending a new play at Playwrights Horizons called A Feminine Ending (http://www.playwrightshorizons.org/sharp.asp).  It's written by Sarah Treem, and directed by Blair Brown, and counts Marsha Mason and Richard Masur among its cast.  A friend had an extra ticket, so...

I hope everyone has a wonderful Saturday, and remembers to stop and smell the roses every now and then.

I was a Stephen King fanatic up through Misery and then it was diminishing returns and I finally stopped.  But, up until the bad business of 2001/2002 I had an incredible King collection - all the books in pristine firsts, most of the limited editions, lots of one-off stuff - had to unload it (and a lot of other stuff) to pay the legal bills - yes, the pointless legal bills.

My favorite King novel is The Shining, which I think is brilliantly done.  But I enjoyed all of the books of that era.  My favorite film adaptation of his work, the one that comes closest to capturing the novel and yet works as a film is The Dead Zone, one of my favorite films and one of my two favorite Cronenberg movies.  Carrie is also good.

I'll admit it...I've got a bootleg CD. ;) And I'm pretty sure I got it on eBay!  I got it years ago, when anyone could get anything.  I once bid $75 on a recording of Follies that was supposed to be the complete show from the soundboard, but I got outbid...fortunately.

It is much easier on my ankle & foot when I hike than it is to walk or drive.  I think it is the soft trails I go on, and those endorphins kicking in when I’m on the trails.

Sherlock was just a big puppy out there today & full of energy.  When he doesn’t listen I remind myself Echo, the almost perfect dog, was just as unpredictable at Sherlock’s age.

He may not always listen, but he can melt my heart when he is so incredibly good when it really counts.  I was very proud of him when he calmed down for the shy lab, and again for an older dog.  Just as we were leaving the trail an active dog he had played with earlier showed up again & then bolted across a field.  Sherlock began following him and then, WITHOUT any prompting from me, ran back to my side. :D

I got mine on eBay too, and the score (which of course is useless) for a while there it was cool to obtain all this swag, but now it seems less cool.

When I went through my "Carrie" phase, I read the actual book so I could understand the story better.  I haven't read any King since.

I did watch the first hour of LEGALLY BLONDE. Sort of fun but no great shakes, and that squealing audience was disconcerting.

I'm glad they filmed it widescreen at least, but hated the LEGALLY BLONDE/MTV bug that sat in the lower right corner of the show during the entire telecast.

And, of course, ALL the commercials.

Not the best singers in some of the younger parts either.

The audience for the taping of Legally Blonde was recruited and did not pay.  The orchestra section people had to wear pink, and, most importantly, not be over a certain age.  Pre-show, they were DIRECTED to scream and scream loudly.  Even so, the sweetening even in the five minutes I saw, was really obvious.

Tonight I'll either watch or record LIFE (which DR Ron raved about the other day) and, of course, there's another new episode of TORCHWOOD I'm eager to watch.

And I'll continue watching NCIS episodes. WOuld like to get into disc 3 by the end of the evening. Would like to finish the set by Monday afternoon if at all possible.

It drowned out lyrics and dialog in several parts of the first hour that I watched.

I guess watching musicals on PBS has spoiled me, but I hated all the breakaways for commercials.

TOD:

Book - Shining
Film - Carrie

I'll never forgive Kubrick for not filming topiary scenes for the movie of The Shining.

I also like the book of Cujo (better than the movie, I thought, because we got to see the plot develop through the dog's eyes.

I was hooked on "Golden Years" before the plug was pulled.

Damn you, Enabler! Just ordered a copy - and filled out my basket (don't go there) with Cruising and the Collector's Edition of Taxi Driver (which I've never seen). Both Poltergeist and Taxi Driver are on sale for half price)

I have a ticket to the Symphony tonight, but I really don't want to go. What a dilemma. Last time I forgot about it and really wanted to go, this time I remember and really don't feel like going.  I feel like I'm catching a cold. This weather isn't helping.

I made chicken noodle soup today, but tried using on of those roasted chickens from the grocery store. It's too greasy and has that funny flavor that those chickens have.  Do I eat what tastes bad or throw it out????

I did a little research & I guess "allergic" is too strong a reaction.  The definition is :

Systemic Reactions, which usually begin 6-12 hours after getting the flu shot, last for only 1 or 2 days, and can include fever, malaise (not feeling good), and muscle aches.

I "love" the part about last ONLY 1 or 2 days.  I can you those two days aren't much fun.

I'm mostly truant this weekend!
A long time friend had his home brone into a couple of weeks ago. Computer and some other goods stolen.  He did not notice that his spare car keys were also stolen.  The car was taken last week. I am very glad that no one reads my posts anyway.  Almost nine hours after originally posting my Stephen King favorites, I reread my post and found that I had listed the wrong book and television film as my favorite.  I do indeed like THE DEAD ZONE, both as a book and as a film; but it was THE STAND that actually ranks as my all-time favorite King.  It was done as a six or eight-hour television miniseries.  It is one of the rare DVDs that I watch on a regular basis.

I know that a lot of people really like Kubrick's THE SHINING, but it just doesn't work for me.  Bottom line: Jack Nicholson doesn't work for me.

Ditto, ditto, ditto! The movie would have worked better if Kubrick had a more faithful adaptation to the book. There were a number of choices he made that Stephen King was apparently unhappy with. One I remember was that Kubrick asked King what the most scary element was in the story, and he said "the boiler". Kubrick immediately responded that he was going to take that out. I thought, "What an arrogant jerk!"

Hitchcock should have made this movie, IMHO!

There is a group of older men and women here in town who entertain at nursing homes and hospitals. They are former comedy writers/performers from the 70's. Brushed Back - A material backing made from brushed cotton, often used in pajamas to give them a warm, flannel feel against the skin.

Now if only I could find a nice set of these pj's.  Well, I did.  I found the nicest looking pair of pj's I have ever seen (these often come in horrendous colors), I saw the photo and sent wow, I want these.  Then I saw the price tag-$147and went WOW! ;D

None of the local stores sell these.  When I can find them they do they are often too flimsy for  winter wear.  I need something warm or I'm too cold to sleep at night.  Purchasing on line I really can't tell the weight, but I'm getting disparate for a new, attractive, pair of pj's.

DR Cillaliz - I sincerely hope you're not coming down with what DR Vixmom and I have had.  Even though I feel much better, my cough is still pretty annoying.

I hope not too, but I don't think so. I had that the beginning of September and my cough took forever to go away. I took and advil cold and sinus and that seems to have taken care of it for now

I think I have a little of this too. If it's one or two days I'll be fine tomorrow. It's always really mild with me. But since I still go into the jails and am around people who can't stay home even if they are sick, I really can't afford not to get one.

Tonight I'll either watch or record LIFE (which DR Ron raved about the other day) and, of course, there's another new episode of TORCHWOOD I'm eager to watch.

Matt, I also enjoy Torchwood!  I was somewhat bummed to find out that BBC America is broadcasting the episodes on a one season delay.

THE FOLLOWING MAY BE A SPOILER:

After searching various websites for viewing free tv shows online.
I came across a great website that has the entire season of Torchwood --
(13 episodes)  The link is as follows:

Click on the green tab for the free episodes.

If you're a fan of Torchwood -- wait until episode 12.  You'll need some kleenex.  Okay, that's my extend of the spoiler.   :-X

Well, I didn't eat anything healthy tonight...I went to the office to take a book shelf and picture to hang on the wall. I goofed around there until about 8:30 PM, and decided to just get french fries and a diet coke on the way home. It did get the taste from the bad chicken soup out of my mouth.

I did notice that there were a couple lines that were different in Legally Blonde on TV. One was "He can keep you high and laid" was now "He can even get you laid" and I think they changed "tits" to "boobs" in one of the salon scenes.

I watched quite a few episodes of NCIS tonight. I don't find the writing very tight, but the ensemble does do good work playing off each other. The love interest for Tony is rather ludicrous in that he leaves work for hours at a time with no explanation. He may be good at his job, but he'd be fired in an instant in any realistic situation, especially since they're a brand of the military.
Title: Re:REVIEWING THE SITUATION
Post by: Matt H. on October 13, 2007, 08:14:17 PM
I have to say the video quality of this NCIS set is the poorest of any of the TV box sets I've been watching since late August. Soft, very grainy, and inconsistent sharpness. Color is rich, but with all that grain, it's rather a chore to watch. After awhile, I started to think maybe my set or DVD player was malfunctioning, but a quick glance at anything else proves it's the DVDs themselves.

And MEDIUM and CSI: NY were beautiful transfers, by the same studio.

I have been thinking about it and I have to say I still loved Legally Blonde even on TV.  It brings back a lot of things I went through in law school and in the beginning of my career.  I wish I had been more of a Elle Woods back then.  I think it has a great positive message to girls and women, it's a positive strong message about being true to yourself, working hard, becoming who you are and what you can be on your own etc.   I'm glad I have it on my DVR so I can watch it again and skip the commercials.  It was much better in person, but it was still very inspiring to me.

I also listened to the commentary on an episode with the actor who plays McGee and the director of the episode. It was the one where mcGee's sister was accused of murdering a sailor, and all the evidence did point to her. Very easy to figure out the real murderer, but it was still an OK episode.

Well, I believe I played my last Mary Poppins rehearsal today - at least for the two new Janes going into the show.  Since Lilah had her put-in rehearsal yesterday, only Alexandra had rehearsal today.  It was basically another review and reinforcement session since she won't have another rehearsal until Thursday when she gets to run her scenes with Ashley (Mary Poppins) and her Michael.  So, we ran the show from the Prologue to the "Supercal Bows".  Whew!

Now it's onto the Keyboard 2 book...

After rehearsal, I walked up to the Theatre District and came upon one of the weekly street fairs, which happened to be right on 8th Avenue from 42nd up to 57th(!).  So... For dinner, I just ended up sampling things from the various food vendors: Thai Chicken Satay, Dominican Empanadas, Japanese Bubble Tea, and a Brazilan Churro.  :)

And since it today was Saturday, there were lots of actors walking around too between their matinee and evening shows.

Then came A Feminine Ending at Playwrights Horizons.  The play doesn't open officially until next week, but it was obviously a press night tonight - lots of people with press packets in the audience, along with some recognizable faces.  In any case...

I liked the play, or at least parts of it.  There were some truly brilliant moments of writing and acting.  Alas, what came between those moments was sometimes awkward and frustrating.  The story centers around a young woman (who happens to be a composer and and oboist) trying to find out what to do with her life.  -I guess that's the simplest way to put it.  During the play's 90 minutes, we meet her new musician boyfriend, her hold high school boyfriend, her mother (played by Marsha Norman), and her father (played by Richard Masur).

After the show, I happened to run into Blair Brown, the actress and director of the evening's entertainment.  It was nice seeing her again, and she actually remembered me from when we did A Little Night Music at the Kennedy Center.  :)

Has anyone actually seen the new DVD of Cruising?  Worth watching?
Yes. and yes, as DR MattH points out in a previous post.
I have seen the dvd AND I recommend it highly.
Here are a few things I had to say over on the Scarlet Street boards:
Quote
The first thing of interest on the dvd of CRUISING, released yesterday, is the absence of the studio-enforced disclaimer at the start.

Quote
Just before CRUISING, Richard Cox was co-starring with Alexis Smith in the Broadway-bound musical, PLATINUM.

Quote
It's funny that I have gone from one extreme to the other regarding CRUISING.
When I saw it on opening day, I was disgruntled and livid to see the disclaimer at the start, which naturally didn't allow me to enjoy the film for just what it is: a nightmarish journey through the underbelly of the s & m scene of New York city in the days before AIDS, NOT a murder mystery.
As its title also suggests, the film is a voyage (the tugboat opening and closing shots reinforce this) in to the dark reaches of Al Pacino's character -whom I'm certain does commit the final murder. It is a bleak look at a not altogether likable character, one who is not the "hero," but an edgy, nervy character wiling to go to any extremes to achieve his goal. Forbes wants to be a detective, and he's willing to be hog-tied in a seedy hotel room, engage in gay sex with a total stranger (who could be a murderer) if that is what it takes to get his detective's badge. That he, more than likely acts in a Wildean ("Each man kills the thing he loves) manner certainly doesn't earn him audience empathy - nor should it.
As the years have passed, and having had access to a softly focused panned and scanned videotape, my appreciation for CRUISING grew with each successive viewing; the jigsaw puzzle-like flowing of one scene to the next (is there really a true time scale going on here?), the deft, though bloody, handling of each successive(?) killing, the mystery which is truly an enigma - or a MacGuffin, the monochromatic cinematography which truly brings out the verdant greens as well as the sanguine, copious blood and Al Pacino's brave, believable performance have all grown richer through the years
Though flawed, I find that CRUISING holds up well and would make a fascinating double bill with Ken Russell's CRIMES OF PASSION.

Quote
I still find it highly flawed, but definitely under appreciated.
I should mention, anecdotally speaking, that on a trip to New York city with two of my female ROCKY HORROR cronies, they insisted on me giving them a CRUISING tour, taking in all the sights in the West Village which had featured prominently in the film. Only one was disappointed NOT to find Powers Booth selling handkerchiefs in the tiny store.

. . .of course, by this time, you've probably already watched it.

Hmm...

I know some campers who cook with bottled carbonated water since:
1) bottled carbonated water is "safe", clean
2) it's also acidic so it would kill common bacteria
3) and because of the carbon dioxide in it, it has a lower boiling point (like when boiling water at higher altitudes).

So...  I'm guessing he was using it because it was either:
-the only water source available.
-and/or he didn't cook the vegetables at 212 degrees (boiling point), thus preserving some of the color, texture and nutrients in the process.

Nope! Tonic is not just carbonated water - it had quinine added which would give anything cooked in it a stange and unattractive taste.

No wonder tonic over ice tastes like cr&p!

This could be the set-up for a daffodil joke

Oy gevalt!

Sorry for my recent E&T...
Lots of things a-changin'.  I guess it's that time of year.

Soooo, let's recap:

*Me and the Ever-Lovin' Heather are no more.
*I've been bumped up into the producer's chair for the LACCTAA benefit (cue "The Producers" score...)
*I'm filling out college applications.

Boy, when you're embroiled in those three things, it seems like a lot more than when you just type it out.

Cason,

* I'm sorry
* Congratulations!
* Good luck!

:)

I'm watching Legally Blonde that I recorded today.  I actually like it.  I don't love it by any means, but it's enjoyable and there's a lot of energy on the stage. :)

Coincidentally, my left foot is killing me right now.

Killing me softly with my foot...killing me softly...

The three MTV "hosts" of the event...those three girls have absolutely NO presence.  Total wet fishes on the screen. :P

ASSOCIATED PRESS (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,301603,00.html)

Quote
WERNER VON TRAPP OF 'SOUND OF MUSIC' FAME DEAD AT 91

MONTPELIER, Vt. —  Werner von Trapp, a member of the musical family made famous by the 1965 movie "The Sound of Music," has died, his family said. He was 91.

"The Sound of Music" was based loosely on a 1949 book by his stepmother, Maria von Trapp, who died in 1987. It tells the story of an Austrian woman who married a widower with seven children and teaches them music.

Born in 1915 in Zell am See, Austria, von Trapp was the fourth child and second son of Captain Georg von Trapp and his first wife, Agathe Whitehead. In the movie "The Sound of Music," Werner von Trapp was depicted by the character named Kurt.

Sorry. Done

Might delete this one or we'll be answering questions for days.

Although, DR DerBrucer, if you'd like to go ahead and credit that quote to yourself, well, that would be a totally different matter.  ;)

Where we draw a line bad-taste-wise is interesting.  People who might make a joke about a death might very well refrain from making  a joke abouit a disability.

Do I need to bolster my image for totally tasteless humor?

I was hooked on "Golden Years" before the plug was pulled.

der Brucer

I watched that also and was very upset that they didn't finish it.  Wasn't it supposed to be a mini-series, anyway?  I did buy the videotape that was released, but I've never watched it to see what was done to the ending.

When I got in my car to go for coffee this morning I looked down and the odometer said 22222. I thought that was pretty cool

That is cool. :) I took this picture last year:

I'm afraid I don't have a temperature-taking device.
