Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a certain achy-breaky vibe to them, and now it is time for you to post until the achy-breaky cows come home.

bk - As I learned with my last two bouts of acid reflux, it can cause you you to have chills, fever and body aches.   And since you're having trouble breathing in... Well... The "easy" test is to try and take a deep breath in, but only breath into your lungs - breathing in through your nose is the best way to do that.  Then take a nice breath in to your whole body (mouth open).  If you really start coughing after the really deep breath, well, you may have acid reflux.  In any case...

If you're still feeling sick tomorrow... See a doctor.

From THE NOTES:

Quote
I am beginning to have song juggling problems with singers, as everyone tends to want to do the same five songs. Since Mr. Menken and Mr. Schwartz have written so many great numbers, I’m hoping I can make people happy with other songs.

Interesting - with bk's reputation for having singers turn little-heard gems into show-stopping block busters, you'd think they'd be asking him to pick their songs!

Broadway in your living room

Now and again, television has classed itself up by showing stage musicals. The benefits flow both ways.

By Robert Lloyd, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
October 13, 2007

ON the far side of the continent, on an island covered in concrete, there runs a street of dreams familiarly called the Great White Way. And the fact that we know this, even if we have not traveled east of the Colorado (or even of Colorado Boulevard), is due as much as anything to television. A medium whose own early years were spent -- to re-punctuate George M. Cohan -- "4.5 minutes from Broadway," it has, across the years, transmitted glimpses of what goes on there to the far world.

This weekend, the unlikely organ of this enlightenment is MTV, which will broadcast a complete performance of the hit musical "Legally Blonde," based on the movie of the same name and taped last month at the Palace Theatre in New York. The show at hand may not be "Oklahoma!" or even "Avenue Q," but it nevertheless continues a long and honorable (if too infrequently observed) tradition of bringing remote culture into the homes of those without the means to experience it firsthand.

Quote

...Java sparrows can discriminate between Bach’s French Suite no. 5 in G minor and Arnold Schoenberg’s Suite for Piano opus 25. The birds were also able to generalize new music by Bach (Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major) and Schoenberg (Five Orchestra Pieces, Opus 16) and artists in similar categories, i.e., Vivaldi and Elliott Carter. In these experiments, music by Bach and Vivaldi was considered classical music, while the music of Schoenberg and Carter was considered modern music. Watanabe and Nemoto [Behav. Processes 43, 2 (1998)] have also shown that, given the option of three perches producing either silence, classical, or modern music, the Java sparrows preferred Bach to Schoenberg and Vivaldi to Carter. These results indicate that Java sparrows or songbirds prefer classical to modern music, or perhaps just more harmonious to dissonant sounds. Additionally, the sparrows chose music they 'liked' (e.g., Bach) over silence or music they 'disliked' (e.g., Schoenberg)." [/size]

New Hampshire Mulls December Primary

Friday, October 12, 2007 12:20 PM

New Hampshire primary voters could head to the polls as early as Dec. 11 in an unprecedented move to maintain the state’s first-in-the-nation status.
Jim Splaine, the state legislator responsible for the law mandating that New Hampshire vote first, is actively campaigning for a vote on that date, The Washington Post reports.

And IOWA, by law, must caucus at least 8 days earlier!

DR Sandra - Congratulations on your job offer!  I hope you have more.  It's always good to have options.

Belated Happy Birthday greetings to DH Keith's mother.

DR elmore3003 - thanks for the video clip link!  Ethel sure sounded swell.

***FEEL BETTER VIBES*** to bk

DR Cason - all the best wishes on your producing duties, and ***SUPPORT VIBES*** in your college application process.  I'm sure there's a few H/Ks that would be willing to write you a reference.  Well, maybe that's not such a good idea.   ;)

DR dB - thanks for the interesting news bits.  Especially interesting about the bird's musical tastes.  I wonder how they'd react to The Brain?  :)

WOD: 2008 will have a February 29th.

My used copy of the Amy's Breads cookbook arrived yesterday from Amazon Marketplace.

While it appears to be an excellent primer on bread baking, alas it does not seem to contain the proprietary recipe for Monkey Cake.  I imagine that one of the recipes posted some weeks ago by DRs would probably work pretty well.

Thanks to all for your good wishes for last evening.  The benefit cabaret went very well and I think they raised a good amount of money.

Our first show went just fine.  Then, in the second show we loosened up, camped it up a bit more, and just had a really fun time on stage.  And it went over like gangbusters.

Here we are, waiting to go on:

Good morning, all! I'm off to Toyland and then back here fo some work on the David Burnham arrangement.

BK, you need a vacation.  Plain and simple, a vacation.  You've spent six weeks in Manhattan fighting with NYMF and you need a break. And a rest.  Get one before the constant stress kills you.  Take a trip to London, visit DR CharlesPogue in Kentucky, turn off the phone and do nothing for two days, but stop driving yourself so damned hard.

End of rant.  I think I'll head downtown.

My favorite joke about the New Hampshire primary is that they are so zealous about protecting their 1st in the nation status that they moved their primary to last week....And one of the Brit re-issue labels is releasing some of the recordings made by 12 year old Julie  Andrews, but the cd will also include the title song to the boyfriend  and "Once upon a long ago" from HIGH TOR; I've got a slightly scratchy(like BKs throat)copy of the old Decca LP and that song is the best thing on it, an absolutely gorgeous ballad.

Love him and love the show. Justin's attempts to play basketball last week were hilarious. I was a lousy basketball player, but compared to Justin, I was close to NBA levels when I was a kid.

I adored seeing Daniel take an interest in him since (other than Papi) there's no male presence in Justin's life, but I hope the writers aren't going to instigate a "butch-up Justin" motif this season. He's fine just as he is.

I had some time this morning after reading the newspaper, so I watched another NCIS episode. This was the one featuring the automatic car. What an easy mystery to solve! The writers on this show are definitely not interested in setting up baffling puzzles.

Video quality continues to be frustratingly poor. After several episodes in a row, I start to wonder if my equipment is going bad. Then, I pop in a disc I know has a good transfer, and then I can see that Paramount has just made a mediocre product.

I'll look forward to seeing LAW & ORDER: CI which (thanks to DR der Brucer) I recorded last night at 11.

I noticed in the weekly TV section of the newspaper today that NBC is going to show L&O:CI on Saturday night (it didn't say which episode). If this is going to become a weekly thing of their broadcasting USA's episodes a week or two later, I'll wait and watch/record the NBC versions since they'll be in HD and the USA versions aren't.

Just saw Friday night's ratings:

WOMEN'S MURDER CLUB won the night in total viewers and was the highest rated in ages 18-49. MOONLIGHT finished second in the time period and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS finished slightly above SMACKDOWN. (The baseball playoffs were third).

An auspicious beginning for the show. I'll be eager to see how it fares next week.

Marvelous Matt is here today and we're trying to finish up the stuff that was forgotten, previously overlooked, etc. Like the kitchen faucet that was replaced only a year or two ago and shouldn't need to be replaced, but does. It wasn't on the list, but is flaky and I'm just plain tired of messing with it.

DR JMK, I do hope that the remaining portion of your kitchen remodel goes smoothly. In my experience, it's the little things that getcha.

Got back last night from helping my sister babysit little Taylor and Benjamin. A 2 years old and a 5 year old can certainly wear you out. Bosco went with me and loved all the attention from Taylor. In fact I awoke at 5:30 Saturday morning to the sound of Taylor, having snuck into my room, talking to and petting Bosco.

I bought them the set of STINGRAY dvds which they loved and watched practically non-stop! I guess it was a good investment!

We also went on a hayride to the pumpkin patch and then carved scary pumpkins.

It must have been our mood last night.  First we watched about 5 minutes of Women’s Detective Club.  My brother hadn’t liked it & Keith highly agreed with him, so after about 5 minutes we switched to Torchwood.  About a quarter of the way through Torchwood I said I wasn’t enjoying the episode.  Keith agreed and we turned it off.  I think at that point he may have taken it off the season pass list.

We then turned on The Reaper and found it much more enjoyable than last week’s episode, its still a keeper. :D

Matt H, we agree on How I Met Your Mother,  which sadly was the worst episode yet.  Since the show continues to go downhill we pulled it from our season pass.

There was also on the special features another cast roundtable discussion. Again, most of the questions sent in by fans were kind of lame, and there's too much backslapping (e.g. Mark Harmon telling Lauren Holly that this role on the show is the best acting of her career. If this is the best, . . . .: I think she's awful on the show.)

LA TIMES (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-crash14oct14,0,5138241.story?coll=la-home-center)

Quote
Truck drivers say that stretch of the I-5 is a treacherous blend of darkness, blind spots and curves. Rain magnifies the dangers.

By Deborah Schoch and Jason Song, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
October 14, 2007

Big-rig drivers say they dread the tunnel. Some call it the worst in the state. The traffic lanes curve left toward Los Angeles and then, abruptly, the drivers find themselves in the tunnel, blinded in the dark.

"You don't see what's ahead until you get in the tunnel," said another trucker, Luis Ceja, 49, of Norwalk, who estimates he has been through the I-5 tunnel more than 100 times.

"It's like you're going blind," Ceja said. "The tunnel's so dark -- you only have a second to react."

Veteran truck drivers say the treacherous 550-foot-long tunnel near Santa Clarita mixes three of the problems they dread most -- darkness, blind spots and curves

The southbound I-5 truck tunnel can be treacherous in the rain, said Evangelista, who drives for Rapid Transfer Express and was headed for San Diego on Saturday night.

According to Bill Hoffer, a spokesman for the National Weather Service, a slight rain began falling in the Santa Clarita area Friday afternoon.

"When it rains, the water won't evaporate," Evangelista said. "It's a lake of oil and water, and it's real easy to slide on it," he said, shouting over the roar of his big rig. This is the worst time of year for those conditions, he said, before the rainy season begins. "When you're going fast, right after it rains, you're not giving yourself a chance."

He agreed that the curve on the tunnel approach is treacherous: "The curve plays a big role, too. If you're going too fast, you're dead meat."

It is said that David Lee Roth, the original lead singer of Van Halen, once said that "Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a yacht and you can sail pretty close to it." And economists know quite well that money generates income effects that increase utility.
But apparently money can't buy you taste. Look at the house that Sim Jae-Duck, the "chairman of the organizing committee of the Inaugural General Assembly of the World Toilet Association" built for himself and his brood:

Hi folks,

I had hoped to be on line sooner but I got involved in some house work.  I have go cook dinner as well.  Sigh.

How much time could be saved it we didn't have to eat?  No more going shopping for groceries, etc.  Not to mention the money we would save.

I have been wavering on going to Pittsburgh over the Veterans Day Holiday (which is also Mom's birthday November 10th) but honestly thought I would wait until May of next year.

That changed when I just received an email from my niece, Marie, that said she stopped by the grave today and they never covered it with grass or put the date when Mom passed on the head stone.  I WILL make the trip and everything had better be right or heads will roll.

I've already sent a tart email to the cemetary expressing my displeasure and putting them on notice that I WILL be inspecting the graves when I come up.

I've been worried about it.  I knew I shouldn't just walk away and think things would be done with out my checking up on them.

Sorry, I stepped away to make dinner and the word got out that I'm going to Pittsburgh and my other niece, Debi, called me to ask if it was true.

It looks like I am going.  I wanted to stay at the same hotel but Debi wants me to come to her house.  I never expected that.

Good Evening!

Well... I went by the theatre to check on the rehearsal schedule for this week, and ended up having a nice chat with the associate conductor.  Then I walked over to The York, and found out that tonight's performance of The Body Beautiful was Sold Out - and the waiting list was already quite long.  So...  I just walked around midtown for a while enjoying the wonderful Fall evening. :)

I'll be at the Borders in the Pittsburgh Mills; I would think that the Borders you went to was in East Liberty - which is a truly incredible store in one of the worst locations in Pittsburgh.

As for the exercise girls' vocal.. She really sings it.  However, it does sound like it may have been "sweetened" for the broadcast.  But, I will say that that is one of the healthiest ensembles on Broadway right now, so she's been conditioned well.

I started working for $1.00 an hour at age fourteen, assisting my dad loading pastry trucks on Saturday mornings - 4:00am to 12:00pm - and the boss always gave me $10.00 per day; the alliterative company was Princess Pastries of Parnassus, Pennsylvania.  I worked there for seven years, mostly weekends, but, during summer vacations, I was there five days a week, most often in the pastry prep areas.
Continuing with the alliteration, my next job (and horrible - it was) was for Frontier Fabricators, a sheet metal operation.

Well, DERBRUCER -- you got part of it right.  The tunnels are technically in the area around the Hwy-14 & I-5 interchange, SOUTH of Magic Mountain and the Santa Clarita area.  This is the same area which was greatly devasted by the Northridge Earthquake.  The Grapevine is indeed to the north, about 40 or so miles.  :)

$0.50/hour as a hospital laboratory messenger (part time) while in high school.

Upon graduation I went to work for a bank in the duplication department (momeograph operator) for $0.75/hour.

While at the Naval Academy I was paid $115.00/ month.

Upon college graduation I was paid $230/month.

Upon leaving the service, 10 years later, I earned $1000/month in my first civilian job.

der Brucer

Of course off the books, while in high school, I collected $1.00/hour for gardening and baby-sitting (twice the minimum wage!) My Jewish-widow neighbors paid top dollar for my super luck with bedded plants, particularly roses (and I was on the clock when I sat and listened to their stories of "way back then".) I was one of the few male baby-sitters that could stay out past midnight on week nights and be counted on to prepare dinner, clean up, and tend to pre-schoolers (including infants).

On LEGALLY BLONDE:

I enjoyed it more the second time through.

The particulary good use of multiple camera shots for much of the ensemble dancing suggests to me that a considerable amount of post production editing was done. The show had a nice cinematic feel to it - didn't seem like a TV broadcast of a stage show. The musical numbers may not be "hummable" but they do a splendid job of moving the emotional thread of the story.

A better show than the Tony-winning Will Rogers Follies, in my opinion.

Count me in the camp of someone who is not enjoying the MTV version of Legally Blonde.  Haven't seen it in the theater, but it just feels so processed to me - strictly of the Jack O'Brien school of musicals, which is not my favorite.  And the songs just don't do it for me.  If you want my opinion, our own Skip does this sort of thing so much better.

I don't like the camerawork (especially those inane shots from BEHIND) and those three dorky MTV girls tell you everything that's wrong with the world today and why young girls are so, well, young (and old at the same time).  Of course, the nadir was when they said you could order the "soundtrack" online.  Note to idiots - soundtracks are for movies, original cast albums are for shows.

My dad had a jewelry store and I worked for him for years wrapping wedding gifts, delivering them, and doing grunt work in the back of the store like polishing silver, engraving Bibles, etc. I never got paid a dime. But I'm not complaining. My parents and I had a great understanding. I didn't get an allowance or get paid for working at the store, but most things I would ask for, within reason, were bought for me. As long as I didn't abuse this system, it worked fine for me.

The first paying job I had was after my freshman year in college. I worked in the proof department of the largest bank in our town. I made $1.60 an hour.

And the big Legally Blonde question of the night: WHERE ARE THE MICS?  Clearly someone at MTV made the decision not to have them, as there's not a one in sight.  So, how did they mic the show for those performances?  Huh?  Unless they taped one without and audience and that's what's making up the bulk of the broadcast.

Yes, I really hated the commercials, but I guess that's the price we pay for a free showing on TV. Still annoying. Thankfully, I can speed through them once I finally can get around to watching the rest of it.

I recorded DEXTER tonight, so I may get to it tomorrow. FInishing NCIS is the #1 priority.

COLD CASE started late tonight, so I've just decided that I will not bother recording it when it begins late. I'll either catch the reruns or just miss it. It's not like there aren't plenty of other things to watch.

Now, I have a bit of writing to do and then will head down to bed.

Good night!

Why did people remove posts?

Because sometimes we have second thoughts about "taste".

I have gotten quite a bit accomplished today, cleaning, sorting and throwing many things away.   Now I must sleep...

I watched Black Book today. It was part of the summer film series here and I missed it. Everyone raved about it, but I guess I'm just not really into the war/spy movie genre.  It was ok, but I guess I expected more. Next is The Wind That Blows the Barley...I think that's the name of it

After hearing so much about the brilliance of Bend And Snap, what a disappointment.  Jerry Mitchell just doesn't have it, I'm afraid.  And that whole Greek chorus thing is annoying to me because they don't obey the rules they set up.  And the UPS Man was just so, Jerry Mitchell.

Oh, well, on to the end.  I like courtroom stuff, so maybe this part will appeal to me more.

Mind you, it's all very slick and packaged, with those awful moving lights and concert lighting - but those screaming teens who are so obviously being led to scream in the oddest places.  I am amazed that they didn't sweeten some of the jokes that just didn't land for this audience (or audiences).  But when they laugh, boy do they pump the volume - but those screams are cheerled by people in the audience.  And how about the LIGHTING on the audience.  How stupid is that?

Brilliance of Bend and Snap?  No way.  It makes the leading lady recede into part of the chorus, a big error IMHO, even though I love the show.

I agree BK. They disbanded The Greek Chorus completely in The Second Act.

It will be very interesting to see how much longer Legally Blonde runs on Broadway. And I truly believe that they really are missing the boat on the possibility of The Road Company of the show ever succeeding. The only hope they have is if the DVD, of what I call a dreadful show, is released

Every review I read couldn't stop talking about the brilliance of the Bend And Snap staging - which, to my eye, was awful - no build, no fun, no focus.  If that's what makes up a show-stopping number these days, no wonder musicals are in such shape as they are.

In other words - the new guys should learn from people like Bennett and Fosse and Champion about build and focus and yes bend and snap.

Hmmm... I don't really remember that much buzz over the "Bend and Snap" number.  People were just glad to know that one of the funniest scenes in the movie was included in the stage musical.  -It also works better when you see the reactions of everyone in the beauty parlor instead of just the close-ups.

As for the mics... Well, I will say that even "live" a lot of the mics are well hidden.  -And I was afraid they were going to go ahead and resort to those telephone operator ones just to be "hip".  Laura Bell has a couple of different wigs, and her mics are built into them, and since most of the other women in the show are wigged, their mics are also well-camouflaged.

*I'm also wondering if some of the mics were edited out digitally.  ???

**And, yes, they did do a taping with no audience.

I didn't like the courtroom scene/song; but I did enjoy "Bend and Snap."  I hadn't heard any of the score until yesterday's tv broadcast - it's totally unmemorable.

I realized the gals' mics could be in the wigs, but that doesn't explain a) the lack of wires going up the back of the head, or b) why no male in the MTV version has a mic.  I suspect they taped them without mics when there was no audience, because otherwise I just don't get it.

Gay Or European was cheap and again took me out of the story because it just stops everything to have a big comedy number that has no reality to it.  I don't mind that as long as it's set up somewhere, but it's not.

What was everyone's beginning salary at their first tax-paying job?

I made $1.35 per hour during the summer between my junior and senior high classes working as a stock clerk at Columbia Wholesale....my father was a salesman there.  Take home pay was usually about $35!

My first job was at $3.35 an hour. :) I've certainly moved up in the world.

At one point, Christian Borle had one in his right side upper hairline.  I don't remember where it was in the show, but I only saw it the one time...that I noticed.

It is OVER!!!  Finished!!!

The wedding last night was lovely....no major problems.  When my sister posts some pictures, I will add a couple.

Everything was ON TIME and we kept things moving.  We were to be finished by 11:30 - and the happy couple were on their way to the limousine through a street lined with friends holding flaming sparklers at 11:20!!!

Great news on the wedding front!  And Italy for the honeymoon...wow! :)

The screaming got annoying very quickly and the lighting the audience just made no sense. :-\
