Well, you've read the notes, the notes were perfunctorily perfuntory, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they'll be here as soon as they find a new vibe.

Good morning, all!  I have a meeting at Toyland this morning, perhaps laundry in the afternoon, and then a bit of socializing with DR Jose.

Last night, in my continuing mission to see the complete oeuvre of John Schlesinger, I watched HONKY TONK FREEWAY.  I have to drag out the bio now and see what it says about the film beynd what a flop it was.  It seemed a very messy, but very funny, film to me, NASHVILLE without the brilliance, so I'd be curious to know how much was studio interference, etc.  I have to call Celia Weston about it; I don't recall ever seeing her looking so young in a film.  I also wish I'd seen the film before 2000 so I could have asked Deborah Rush about it when I worked with her at Williamstown.

The thing about pain seems to be that no one understands that you're going through it unless you specificially tell them - over and over.

Good morning, Bruce! Hope you're feeling better soon.

For pure entertainment musical, I'd have to go with the much-reviled revival of "On The Town" in Central Park, as much because of the circumstances of the day as the show itself. I was in a miserable part-time job, and was becoming disenchanted with my graduate school program.  I was accompanied by a dear friend's dear friend, a striking tall Irish lass who willingly became my "arm candy" for that summer. It was a perfect evening. We had sushi at a kosher place that closed down far too quickly (I had a great rapport with the sushi chef; when I came in, he'd ask how much I wanted to spend that day, and prepare what he thought was the best of the day). Walking into the Delacorte, and seeing the bridge set lit up against the backdrop of Central Park, we both just said "wow." I wasn't at all familiar with the score before, and Bernstein's opening notes had me jumping out of my seat. Lea DeLaria, Mary Testa, and company were absolutely sensational, and if the choreography wasn't memorable, I didn't particularly care. Pure bliss, and I caught the show twice more during its brief Broadway run, standing outside the cavernous Gershwin theater in the freezing cold for rush tickets in its last week. I would later have one of my Playbills autographed by Comden & Green when I saw them at Joe's Pub (another treasured memory; anyone who doubted that theater can do miracles only needed to see how the two of them shed 40 years each when they came on stage, and unfortunately, how quickly they regained them when they left.) Close second: the Irish rep revival of "Finian's Rainbow," which caused me to petition the Oxford English Dictionary to re-define the adjective form of the word "sublime"

Most magical play: a production of Shakespeare's "Cymbeline" at the Pearl Theatre in the East Village (circa 1995). Shep Sobel's minimalist vision (a trunk a la the Fantasticks, strips of cloth representing uniforms worn by different sides, and a 10-member ensemble performing full war scenes) was just magical. I saw it five or six times (plus a few half-times from the wings) when I interned there, and I have not seen Shakespeare as wonderfully done since.

the critically lauded Bend and Snap

This got me googling.  I can't find any review lauding ye olde Bend and Snap.  Some liked Mr. and Mrs. Andy Karl.  Which reminds me that in certain circles (hell, a lot of them), I'm referred to as Joy Dewing's husband - and am called Noel Dewing.  When Andy Karl experiences the same (and his wife, too, is more famous than he is), what's he called, just plain Andy?

For pure fun, How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, that rare entertainment in which each and every song, each and every scene, is laugh-out-loud funny.  I got to see it with Robert Morse, Rudy Vallee, and a leading lady with an unforgettable name: Penny Worth.  Because he refused to take credit, it's sometimes forgotten that the choreography (for all but the "intentionally bad" number) was by Bob Fosse.

TOD - you mean other than The Brain from Planet X, Such Good Friends, and The Last Starfighter week before last  ;) ?

I've had many magical experiences in the audience for musicals:

My first professional production - the touring Music Man at Detroit's Riviera Theatre when I was 9

My first Broadway show - Cabaret original cast in 1967

But the one that really stands out is the Oklahoma! revival, which I saw with DR Elmore at NYC's Palace Theatre in the summer of 1980.  My previous experience of that show had been the movie and an awful community theatre production, so to see it on Broadway with a perfect cast and a high-quality production was awesome.

TOD

That would be a tough choice.  Definately seeing HELLO, DOLLY! with the all-Black cast starring Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway.  I know some people don't care for the show, and some people only know it from the movie; but to me it is sheer magic. No great messages delivered; just pure joy, pure fun, incredible dancing, and a score to keep you humming for days.

Good morning!

I've had the plumber here most of the morning. I had a huge clog in the mainline, and it took awhile for the equipment to get it. Now, a bit poorer but with toilets that flush, clothes washers that drain, and a shower that not only spits out water but also takes it away, I can be a normal human again.

I have to say it was a scary thing when you can't drain dirty water from out of your house.

In the same frame of mind as DR TCB, I choose MAME as the most pure entertainment I have ever seen - on Broadway or on any other stage.

(I'm assuming that Sondheim masterpieces such as SWEENEY TODD and FOLLIES are considered more than just purely entertaining.)

As for the Topic of the Day...  Hmm...

I guess it depends upon what you mean by "entertaining", so...  Off the top of my head, the following come to mind...

Pacific Overtures at the Kennedy Center back in 2002.  This was the production from the New National Theatre of Japan that also played NYC for a few weeks earlier that summer.  I was totally engrossed and engaged the whole time.  The story-telling was so clear, that there were times when it was just easier to follow the actors faces than to read the surtitles.  (Although, I do believe being familiar with the piece beforehand also helped.)  I literally left the theatre trembling and out of breath.  Powerful stuff.

The Who's Tommy - Except for the slow stretch in the second act, this was another electric evening in the theatre for me.  -Well, I ended up seeing it three or four times, so...  It's still my favorite staged overture/prologue - the best use of stage fog and trap doors, simple but very effective.  And that's when my crush on Jonathan Dokuchitz started.  ;)

Wicked - The first time I saw this show there were times when I literally found myself on the edge of my seat with a big ole smile across my face.  The woman sitting next to me even asked me at intermission how many times I had seen the show before since I seemed so into it.  I told her it was my first time, and I don't think she believed me.  Steve and I had come up to NYC for a few days of theatre-going, and I had arranged for house seats for all the shows we were seeing that week.  So, great seats, good show (with the original cast, and no understudies on that night), and a great date who was also enjoying the show as much as I was.

I spent all morning as I waited for the plumber and as he worked watching more NCIS. I am halfway through the last episode, but I'll have to watch it again since it has a commentary track with the producer of the show. I will be done with the set by the end of the afternoon, and then I can start on MEET THE ROBINSONS or the Blu-ray of THE INVISIBLE. Actually, I'll have to do the latter first since it comes out in stores tomorrow.

As for a play or plays...

When I was in high school, our class took a trip to Baltimore to see a production of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.  I don't remember which company produced it or even what theatre it was in, but I remember smiling and laughing a lot.  -And the Clown even moon-walked!

More recently, I'd have to say the Broadway production of Take Me Out.  The show was about so much more than the shower scenes.  Denis O'Hare was a wonder to behold.  There were times when I forgot that he was just playing a character, that he was acting - it was such a natural, unforced performance.  And at the stage door after the show, I was able to thank him for a truly transformative night in the theatre.

Oh.. From yesterday...

I believe my first tax-paying paying job was my first summer working at Coast Guard Headquarters as a summer-hire between my freshman and sophomore years in college.  I believe I made $4.35/hour, plus an hour or two of sick and annual leave each pay period (two weeks).  I was a GS-1.  And what was nice was that each summer we returned, we were automatically given a GS-Level raise.  By my last summer there, I was a GS-4, and I was earning almost a full day of annual and sick leave each pay period, so come the end of the summer, I was able to take off the last week using my sick pay (they allowed that for the summer hires if we got our work down), then I'd get a nice little check a few weeks later for the annual leave I did not use.  :)

I worked for the phone company one summer in college. I was paid $1.90/hr. I had jobs during high school, too, but don't recall the exact wage. It was less than $1.90, though; $1.90 was considered a good wage then.

TOD:  Without a doubt, the OBC of Pippin, which simply blew me away from start to finish as a kid on my first stay in NYC.  For you longtime RATM-ers, remember when John Rubinstein used to hang out there (I didn't know it at the time, but he was also my nephews' soccer coach in L.A., believe it or don't).  We were all posting about Pippin, and a thread developed where people were talking about the characters calling each other by their real names.   I posted that I seemed to remember some of the actors calling each other by their real names (which I really, truly think happened that night, maybe it was an accident--but I clearly remember Rubinstein and Clayburgh sitting on the lip of the stage and Jill called him John at one point), and John posted a long, insistent rant that that had never happened.   Taught me that all kinds of people (ooh, a Bacharach & David reference) read this stuff and y'all had better be careful.   :o

Regarding yesterdays Bi-Mart posts, I worked for a short time at the Bi-Mart in Ashland back in 1983. I then moved to Salem and worked at the Lancaster Dr. Bi-Mart for 13 years. Over those years I worked as a cashier, then clerked in Hardware, Toys, Photo and Sound, Housewares, Drug and Sundries, the front counter, receiving, and the last 5 years worked in the pharmacy.

The only department I did not officially work was Sporting Goods...however, while I was a clerk in Toys I did cover the Sporting Goods counter from time to time.

So, Michael, you're not alone. In fact, according to well known Broadway musical theatre composer Stephen Sondheim,

No One is Alone (an Into the Woods reference)

Nor did I. Does that make it four--or five?

While at the conference over the weekend, I almost broke into giggles. In the opening prayer, the moderator asked God to bend our wills to do his work. I could just imagine God zapping us all with a will-bender gun.

I think I'd have trouble suppressing my laughter, too.

Well...not an officially released DVD. ;) A co-worker recorded it for me and made a DVD of it and she cut out all the commercials!  AND she put all the "backstage" footage on another disc. :D I'll watch it when I get home tonight.

Anyone want a copy? :)

By "entertaining" I mean a show or musical that had nothing on its mind other than to entertain, but one that did so with great craft and intelligence - i.e. Guys and Dolls and the already-mentioned How To Succeed.  I'd add Promises, Promises to that pile.

I went shopping with the AMEX gift card that I was given for helping with the wedding (and thanks to the DRs for their congrats!).

I bought the COMPANY revival CD, the MARY POPPINS 2-disc special edition Soundtrack CD (the Sherman Brothers songs are so perfectly placed in the film, I have always been astonished how lovely and fun the album/cd is to listen to on its own), a book about Alexander the Great, and a book about I Ching.

This might sound dumb.  But BK in order to find out what is wrong with you maybe you should go see your doctor.

I guess it's hard to tell if it's just a cold or if you need antibiotics sometimes.  But even sometimes just going to a pharmacy can help. If you tell the pharmacist what is wrong sometimes they suggest what to take!

I began my afternoon by finishing NCIS, and though it was mildly entertaining and with some very ingratiating characters, I was glad to be finished with it, but most of all because of the shoddy nature of the transfers. To have to sit through six discs of soft, fuzzy, grainy TV shows was akin to torture.

Still, very entertaining, and it looked BEAUTIFUL compared to those awful NCIS transfers.

Good Afternoon!

I ended up meeting my friend, Billy, for lunch at Virgil's BBQ in Times Square. Decent food and lots of it - I should have stopped after the "appetizer" of biscuits with honey butter, but the beef brisket was rather tasty too.

After lunch, I wandered down 45th Street and checked out a new take-out spot called "FreeFoods".  Alas, nothing was "free" price-wise, and nothing was exactly fat-free or calorie-free either.  However, if I'm remembering the write-ups on the place, I believe the "free" refers to the fact that the ingredients are organic (pesticide free) and sustainable, and quick-to-serve.

I had one of their oat cookies with bits of dried mango in it.  Quite tasty.  I think the next time I head back there, I will give their Chocolate Hibiscus Pistachio Brownie a try.

In the review, it says:

Bart is surrounded by a very talented core group: the hilarious (and thank goodness, sans her little girl TV voice) Megan Mullally as his society girlfriend Elizabeth; Foster as his gorgeous lab assistant Inga ("She’s assisting his brains out," Frau Blücher observes), Christopher Fitzgerald as the Marty Feldman-invention Igor (pronounced, thank you, "Eye-gor") and Shuler Hensley as the operatic monster played by Peter Boyle in the film.

When I saw it in Seattle (twice...not to brag or anything ;)), Christopher Fitzgerald as Eye-gor had the line, "She's assisting his brains out."  I wonder if the reviewer got it wrong or if they actually changed who says it.

Topic of the Day:  For me, it would probably be the very first show that I saw on Broadway, Swinging On a Star:  The Johnny Burke Musical (http://www.amazon.com/Swinging-Star-Original-Musical-Revue/dp/B000000BER/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/102-3712075-1692941?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1192484873&sr=1-2).  Here in Olympia, I had performed in several Chrismas shows with Harlequin Productions that were set in the 1940s and they all featured actual 1940s numbers and were all real feel-good shows, so I came to love the music of that era.  SOAS was very well done.  It had great singers and I felt like they really knew how to put together a review.  It had a point and was one of the highlights of my trip to NYC. :)

Here's a Page Six Swinging On a Star Dance:

Tonight i am looking forward to DANCING WITH THE STARS. If i'm not too tired when it is over i may watch HEROES. But i don't like to be sleepy for that one.

Plus i'm going to record a bunch of stuff on tonight (including CHUCK). And i am going to try the new show with Christina Applegate (Something with Samantha in the title). I"m not expecting to like it. But it could be funny.

I will also record JOURNEYMAN and SAVING GRACE  (we are way behind you guys).

Well, one of the musicals that made me laugh smile and was just thoroughly entertaining was LEGALLY BLONDE. Is it perfect, no, but I can relate to it in so many ways.  I'm still listening to the CD.  I love a number of the songs, especially So Much Better

BK, have you seen the movie Legally Blonde lately?  It is a critical plot point that the pool boy is lying about being gay and that none of the legal team except Emmet believes that Elle is right about it.  I thought it was cute.  But that's horse racing

I do not have too many problems suspending disbelief and enjoying a show unless it is truly awful or depressing.  It's really hard for me to pick "The one" that I enjoyed the most.

I had an insane day. From the moment I was half way in my office door until I left....I think I sort of hired a new assistant. She'll start part time in November.  The lawyer she works for is phasing out so she can leave town and get married. Martha, yes another Martha in my life, is bi-lingual and has worked as a legal secretary for at least 3-4 years.  My practice is really going to have to take off for her to go full time, which she wants eventually, so I guess I'm just going to have to do that!

And good afternoon to all the assorted cookies in the Living Room this afternoon.  I'm finally having a break (around 4:20 PM) from noise and banging and ripping.  The "dis-assembly" of my kitchen started this morning.  Plumbing all disconnected, old counter tops ripped off, all the original drawers and doors taken off and discarded.

Here is a picture of what the kitchen was like when I bought the place a few months ago.

Cilla, the plot point is not a problem at all - the musical number that accompanies the plot point is what took me out of the show - for me, anyway, you can't have it all ways and you must obey the rules of the universe you're setting up, which is why I ultimately disliked the Greek Chorus - if they're HER Greek Chorus, no prob - but when they interact with others, I'm done.

Well, I'm with you on the Greek Chorus.  It was a cute line, but you're right, they didn't follow those rules at all and they lost me on that.   During the trial, I actually hated that they went into the bathroom, but I guess  I'm just forgiving because I had such a fun time.

Now the sun is shinning that class is over. ::).  I shouldn’t complain, at least it wasn’t raining & we had a nice class.

There was very sad news though.  One of my classmates suddenly passed away yesterday.  She was a very kind and good person.  In spite of a difficult chronic medical problem she worked hard getting her puppy over some serious issues.  I don’t know what will happen to the dog now.  The trainer was going to pick him up after class.  Finding a home for him will not be easy as he growls at people and other dogs out of fear.  He loves the two black cats that hang out at class.

As for a play or plays...

And did you happen to tell him what you thought of his equipment?

According to one of his former co-stars, Mr. Rubinstein has been known to be a bit testy at times.

Pretty good film.

Today I think I may watch a Friday the Wonder Dog double feature...ROOKIE COP and THE HIDDEN EYE. How's that for entertainment!

No, MBarnum, you were not alone.  I did not watch LEGALLY BLONDE either, because I was glued to my TV watching my beloved Seattle Seahawks play on national Television.  However, considering the results, I should have watched LEGALLY BLONDE.

By "entertaining" I mean a show or musical that had nothing on its mind other than to entertain, but one that did so with great craft and intelligence - i.e. Guys and Dolls and the already-mentioned How To Succeed.  I'd add Promises, Promises to that pile.

I think that HELLO, DOLLY! falls into that category.  Unless you find some social relevance to a group of African-Americans traveling from Yonkers To New York City and never encountering anyone but other African-Americans.

Hmmm, did Stokeley Carmichael know about this subversive musical?

Of course what was really unbelievable to me in TURBULENCE, is that there was a cross country flight on Christmas Eve with less than 10 passengers on the ENTIRE plane.

Actually, there was a story several years ago about a little boy who was flying on Christmas Eve from London to Seattle on British Airways.  He was the only passenger on the entire 747 jumbo jet.  Just him and the crew.  It made headlines here.

If it got a huge laugh, I am sure the line has gone to Andrea.

Wow! I know more people involved with this Broadway bound production of A TALE OF TWO CITIES - one of our former DR Joey's major obsessions -  than I had realized: Joe Cassidy, Derek Keeling, Michael Hayward-Jones with whom I acted in dinner theatre a hundred years ago, and Nick Wyman, who's never been particularly friendly, but I do love his "DINGBATS" commercial for Staples.  Of course, the mighty Tony Walton and our Miss Heather, set designer for "The Brain," are also involved, and I wish it well.

Not much else I guess.  Hanging in there vibes until you can return to a surgeon.  Do you know which one you will return to?

I will go back to the first surgeon.  I really liked his manner (and his looks).  I thought the second surgeon was kind of snotty about the whole thing.  But he really clinched it for me, when he sat down in front of me and dictated  his notes about his patient, including quote/unquote around everything I had said that he seemed to doubt.

Good Evening!

As DR elmore has already mentioned, we dined at Ouest tonight, and we both had some wonderful dinners.  -And a rather tall, cute, handsome waiter too.  (Alas, neither of us "had" him, he was just our waiter for the evening.)

DR elmore had the "Pan Roasted Salmon with Roasted Fennel Custard & a Cannellini Bean, Bacon, Little Neck Clam Ragout".  While I had the "Roasted Farm Raised Sturgeon with Seasonal Mushrooms, Soy Beans & Truffled Carnaroli Rice".  And for dessert, DR elmore had their Ginger-Rasperry "Coupe" - a layered affair with all sort of goodness in it, and I had their "Iced Cappuccino" Sunday, another layered affair with an Espresso Semi-Freddo and other goodness.  Quite a wonderful meal.

And, of course, the company was grand too. Thank you, Larry, for the score and the card.  And your friendship.

I said, "I'm sorry."  Then we went our separate ways.  However, I do believe we'll be registering at Tiffany's in no time.  ;D

DR td - I hope you and your mother's bank account problems come to a speedy and satisfying conclusion.  But as other have mentioned, it's going to take some time.  Last year when my cell phone number got "cloned", and I ended up with almost $2000 worth of long-distance call charges to the Dominican Republic, it took months(!) before I could actually get a hold of someone in my phone company's fraud department - and then a few more weeks to wait for them to contact me.  But everything did get straightened out, and I ended up receiving credit for about four months of my usual monthly charges in addition to the cancellation of the bogus charges.

*And, yes, I did change all my passwords and passcodes on the rest of my accounts on and offline.

Mark is just a friend of mine, a new friend.  He's in the publishing biz.  As I explained to DR elmore at dinner, I've actively tried to expand my social circle over the past couple of weeks, meaning, I've been trying to meet people - well, gay men - who are not also Broadway musicians or actors.  So far, so good.  But again, Mark is just a friend.  As is Shawn, Eric, Jeremy, etc.  :)

BK, have you seen the movie Legally Blonde lately?  It is a critical plot point that the pool boy is lying about being gay and that none of the legal team except Emmet believes that Elle is right about it.  I thought it was cute.  But that's horse racing

I must admit, I found it a hoot - and I'm a European.
