I am reading Seth Rudetsky’s riotous new book: (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51UeY-j1huL._AA240_.jpg).
In it, he describes a maddening situation where he’s playing an audition for a young girl who is not prepared. She gives him the music in the wrong key. He sight-transposes it flawlessly; however, since the girl is not prepared, she does not do very well, with lots of wrong notes. And after each one, she glances over at him, like HE’s causing HER to make all the mistakes. Afterwards, she says to him, “Thanks, anyway!” as she picks up the music. And the person conducting the audition says to him, “Transposing at sight is very difficult. Not everyone can do it.” The young girl's glances at her accompanist had apparently fooled the director, as well!!
So, DR JoseSPiano, has anything like this ever happened to you?

I was a bit surprised that mark cuban is now popular and was not in the bottom 2 again. To me even though he is improving and working hard, he is still the worst dancer.
I also was not surprised that spice girl was in the bottom. I mean if you think about it cameron has a lot of soap opera support and helio is really the strongest man. So they are not going. Marie osmond and jane seymour are hugely famous people. And jennie garth was on BH 90210 (and sabrina is the best dancer). There really is nobody else it could have been. Although i'm hoping marie goes next for the girls.
A lot of it is based on popularity.

Good morning, all! I am not happy with my life at the moment: the estate burden is getting on my nerves, I'm between a rock and a hard place over emptying my dad's house and I will need to return to Ohio to accomplish it, the Macbeths continue to be pains, and my life in Manhattan needs a good jump start of some sort. Some days it's easier to not get out of bed and deal with it all. All that said, I'm up and ready to face whatever fresh hell comes down the pike.
I first heard the WOD in one of my favorite Victor Herbert songs "Art Is Calling For Me," which Beverly Sills restored to favor to the point that I hear it in a lot of soprano auditions. I orchestrated it for Japanese soprano Tomoko Shibata's EMI-Japan recording "Manhattan Dreams."

Wednesday morning greetings! It's dreary in SW Ohio again today - I drove to work this morning in very heavy fog.
The outdoor environment matches my emotional outlook right now. I acknowledged the fact this morning that I'm still not back on top of things, either here at work or at home. It'll get better, I'm sure, but right now I seem to have trouble keeping all the plates spinning.

After my usual morning routine (reading the paper, cleaning the living room this morning), I settled in to watch BOSTON LEGAL. I didn't quite get through the entire thing as I had some work on the computer that I needed to do before I started my workout, but the entire Alan Shore storyline (babbling in the presence of this woman) was so cartoonish and dumb. I quickly lost patience with it.
The gay storyline was interesting (and I haven't gotten to the judge's decision, but I'm sure he'll rule in favor of the Army - it IS the law).
Took an instant dislike to the new lawyer - all attitude and smirk, but the question will obviously be, which lawyer in the firm wil she eventually go to bed with? Clarence? Alan? Jerry? Did the show really need ANOTHER lawyer?

Today I have SVU from last night to watch, and then will proceed with MEET THE ROBINSONS, Disney's latest attempt to do a computer animated movie without the Pixar label. The movie was a moderate hit at the box-office (but earned less than half of what RATATOUILLE earned). There are some bonus features on it, but nothing like the treasure trove they put on their important releases.
I will say that Disney's last non-Pixar animated movie THE WILD was a bomb, but I liked it a lot more than the previous CHICKEN LITTLE which was a sizable hit for them.

A last viewing of PRIVATE PRACTICE, too, unless it's better. I will say I found last week's show the best of the three that have aired, and if the characters would just be given some depth and maturity, I'd like the show a lot more.

I did have some time last night to put in the Ultra-Resolution version of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN to see what it would look like on the new TV. Looked wonderful, but I guess I need to skip to the "Broadway Ballet" to see the spectacular color.
The color in the dresses in the "Beautiful Girl" sequence did pop off the screen. The ballet should look spectacular.

The lush, meandering lower leg of the Rio Grande is one of the most biologically diverse places in North America. More than 300 varieties of butterflies and half the bird species in the United States can be spotted here. So can two endangered species of wild cats: the ocelot, which resembles a miniature leopard, and the jaguarundi, an otter-faced relative of the puma.
Over the last 30 years, ranchers, conservationists, and state and federal officials have strung together a delicate necklace of nature sanctuaries along the river's final 275 miles. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service alone has invested more than $100 million to buy land and restore it to its native state, creating a riverside corridor called the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
Now the new federal directive to build 21 fence segments here threatens to trample the lands the government and private groups spent decades nurturing. A Fish and Wildlife analysis found that up to 75% of the nature corridor could be harmed, for just 70 miles of fence.
"In this little area, you will find more species in four counties than in all but three entire states," said Martin Hagne, executive director of the Valley Nature Center in Weslaco, a vacant lot that was transformed into an educational park filled with malachite and pixie butterflies, Texas tortoises and cottontail rabbits.
"Now they're going to spend billions of dollars to undo the work that cost millions of dollars. These are your tax dollars at work," he said.
Over the last years, business leaders and city officials have spent millions turning South Texas into a lucrative eco-tourism attraction. More than 125,000 people visit the Rio Grande Valley every year to see fields of butterflies hovering above nectar plants and to watch flocks of birds descend on the river and the resacas, lakes formed when the serpentine stream shifts course.
The Rio Grande sits in some of the continent's biggest migratory bird corridors, and listers, or bird aficionados who aim to watch every species in the country, know that South Texas is the only place to scratch off the names of many birds native to Central America (seeing them south of the border doesn't count).
The visitors sustain 2,000 jobs and pump $125 million a year into the economy, according to the visitors bureau in McAllen.

The Orchestra of St. Luke's will perform the world premiere of 16-year-old Jay Greenberg's Violin Concerto with soloist Joshua Bell in its Carnegie Hall season opener on October 28th.
"How do you react when you encounter an early compositional gift so extraordinary that you can’t even begin to comprehend it?" Samuel Zyman wrote of the composer in The Juilliard Journal in 2003. "How do you explain to others a compositional talent so exquisitely developed at such an early age that you can barely believe it yourself? I will say that since I have the printouts of who saw The Brain every night, exactly two people on the jury were in attendance. A shame for our choreographer, who did get raves in almost every "review." As Noel would say - NYMF'd again.

Not exactly sure what you mean by a studio album - a studio cast album? Just a normal album recorded in a studio? On a studio cast album, the only royalty participants would be the authors of the show (and the composer/lyricist get mechanical royalties on top of that), and, if the producer has clout, the producer. On a singer album, the singer, of course, and perhaps if the arrangers/orchestrators have clout they'd get a little something, the songwriters only a mechanical, and the producer a little something.
However, all albums must first recoup, and the way standard industry recoupment works pretty much guarantees that no one sees a piece of the retail for a very long time, if ever.

Just an observation: All of the NYMF jury top winners (except for Platforms, which was a dance show that NYMF gave lots of attention to and logically won for choreography) were from shows that were either in the NYMF press conference or identified in the initial ubiquitous NYMF lists as having "names" involved with them: The Boy in the Bathroom, The Yellow Wood, Such Good Friends, Going Down Swingin', Austentatious, Gemini, Sympathy Jones, Sherlock Holmes, Mud Donahue & Sons. I know several of the jurors, and I'm sure they were very honorable in their quality determinations based on what they saw, and even spread the wealth in their honorable mentions, but - without being derogatory to anyone involved - I'd bet there was much more juror representation at the shows that were the most promoted by NYMF.
Correction: Mud Donahue & Sons was not on the list.

Well, I've just spent the morning trying to avoid a charge against my checkcard.
The result was to cancel the card.
That led to contacting folks with whom I have orders pending and giving them all new credit card information.
The reason for this: "Grill Daddy"
That's right. "Grill Daddy".
I ordered a Grill Daddy three weeks ago. Yesterday, I tried contacting the good folks (thillco.com) who sent me an order confirmation to inquire as to the status of my order. I felt I should have my Grill Daddy by now.
To my surprise/dismay, my e-mails were returned with a note that the addressee was "no longer a valid e-mail address." I went online and, to my horror, found many entries about scams, including a local TV news report on the Grill Daddy....one part saying the item didn't work well and the other part saying that few people who order it ever get it, but do get multiple charges against their credit cards.
I am happy to report no charges for "Grill Daddy" were applied to my now-cancelled checkcard. It will take about a week to replace the card, but there it is.
And another huge lesson learned....always check online before ordering from "infomercials".

Death Threats Won't Sway Rescue Group to Return Dog Ellen DeGeneres Gave Away
The owners of the doggy rescue agency that snatched back the pup that Ellen DeGeneres gave away say they are not going to bow to death threats from fans and pressure from the talk show host and they will not return the dog to DeGeneres' hairdresser.
"It's never gonna happen," attorney Keith A. Fink, who is representing the owners of the Mutts and Moms agency, told FOXNews.com. "There is more of a chance that the Yankees are going to win the World Series this year."
Mutts and Moms dismissed DeGeneres' tearful plea on her talk show Tuesday, maintaining that DeGeneres violated her contract by not informing them that she was giving away the dog, a Brussels Griffon terrier mix named Iggy.
"They are not going to be bullied by the Ellen DeGeneres camp," Fink said. "It's Hollywood culture — she thinks she's above the contract and the law."
DeGeneres explained on her show that Iggy didn't get along with her cats, so she gave it to her hairstylist, who has two daughters, ages 11 and 12.
Fink told FOXNews.com that Mutts and Moms has a rule that families with children under 14 are not allowed to adopt small dogs — but they might have made an exception had DeGeneres gone through the proper channels.

Today I have SVU from last night to watch, and then will proceed with MEET THE ROBINSONS, Disney's latest attempt to do a computer animated movie without the Pixar label. The movie was a moderate hit at the box-office (but earned less than half of what RATATOUILLE earned). There are some bonus features on it, but nothing like the treasure trove they put on their important releases.
I will say that Disney's last non-Pixar animated movie THE WILD was a bomb, but I liked it a lot more than the previous CHICKEN LITTLE which was a sizable hit for them.
I liked "Meet the Robinsons," but then I saw it in 3-D (which was incredible), so that could've influenced my opinion. :)

For anyone who loves Mr. Demy's The Umbrellas of Cherbourg or The Young Girls Of Rochefort, this score, although not by Legrand, is right up there with those - it is an achingly beautiful score, through-sung (the film would have to be categorized as a musical, since every line is sung, as in Umbrellas), symphonic, filled with glorious melodies. Take my word, it's a winner all the way.

Hey - Animal Rescue is all about the rules, not the animals (which is why I got bounced from the group for finding a good home for a hard-to-place dog but didn't follow the rules - and they went to the home to take the dog away from the girl, but Daddy intervened and stopped them.)

LOL. I don't think it is the same. Boy puppies don't lift their legs, and many never do. The only time Sherlock even begins to is if he is by a bush, otherwise he is perfectly happy to STAND on the grass or wherever. I assure you he never goes on himself.
Now, if he were to lift his leg he might miss and go on a person, or another dog's leg. I see it happen far too often. And then he will begin going on walls, cars tires, bike racks, the list just continues.

Although it's Pixar-lite, with John Lasseter attached as Exec Producer. I gave it a pretty unqualified rave at DVDTalk--probably my favorite non-Pixar Disney release of the last several years.
I'm going to have to watch it again before I write about it. My first impression was that it was overly frenetic and scattered. Once the pieces all came together later, it made me curious to see it again, at least the first 2/3 again, to see better how the pieces fit together.

Keley lives in a fantasyland if that's how he thinks a "Don't Ask; Don't Tell" trial would actually go, but it was a feel-good resolution, so who am I to complain? Stil think the Alan Shore-babbling business was too silly and not worthy of the show.

I really want to order this one, but will have to wait until I get home. This new software installation has me on Netscape instead of Internet Explorer...and some sites it won't let me access. Instead, it says a "plugin" is needed...but it won't say "which" plugin, so the links to sites where I might find plugins don't do me much good. I blame the installer and Mozilla and some restrictons that were built in.

I thought he was superb in WOLF and STARGATE. And he can be very effective on BOSTON LEGAL when they give him a part he can conceivably act without appearing ridiculous. That vegetable babbling nonsense last night NO actor could have pulled off.

I'm tellin' you - it's a beautiful thing - don't think it's just a soundtrack - it's a full-out musical motion picture in which, like Umbrellas of Cherbourg, every line is sung. It's achingly beautiful.
The first time I saw "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" was on the DVD issue....and it floored me. HOW had I missed this one???
The soundtrack is devastating, so I'll totally take your word on the Colombier title!

It's an exceptional release - a 2 CD limited edition of the soundtrack to Jacques Demy's Une Chambre En Ville by Michel Colombier. You can hear some track samples and read the blurb at www.kritzerland.com. I've kept the price low for a 2 CD limited edition (limited to 1200 copies).
For anyone who loves Mr. Demy's The Umbrellas of Cherbourg or The Young Girls Of Rochefort, this score, although not by Legrand, is right up there with those - it is an achingly beautiful score, through-sung (the film would have to be categorized as a musical, since every line is sung, as in Umbrellas), symphonic, filled with glorious melodies. Take my word, it's a winner all the way.
So exciting (and I've already ordered). Michel was such an underappreciated genius--but not by me. ;)

A little Michel Colombier info: he came from a very musical family, and first became famous in France as a partner with Pierre Henry in some of the first musique concrete recordings there. He later became, in a fascinating evolution, Petula Clark's music director. He met Herb Alpert when Petula guested on a TJB special (Brass Are Comin' I think, though I can't recall). Herb hired him to write "Wings," a jazz rock oratorio that is simply unbelievably wonderful. From that collaboration he became Lani Hall's music director, and later Flora Purim's. He also wrote a lot of scores for U.S. films, though none became blockbusters. He sadly died of cancer at a very young age a few years ago in Santa Barbara, IIRC.

It should be wonderful...and a great reason to miss rehearsal! :D

So... Eight hours of auditions later...
Today was a long day. And, unfortunately, it was one of those days where I just never felt fully awake nor alert - which made the day seem a little bit longer than it actually was. I didn't screw up anyone's auditions, but I did have a couple of interesting finger-slips, and there were a few times when I went ahead and restarted someone's song because I realized I had not read the key signature properly. Ooops! In any case...
It was a good day of auditions and auditioners. There were no real clunkers, and there were even a few new "discoveries" as it were. And I had a couple pieces of music put in front of me that I don't think I ever played before, or even heard before. However, it's amazing how easy it is to play/sight-read a well-written song. There were some fun Irving Berlin and Cole Porter obscurities. -Alas, there was one "undiscoverd" Gershwin tune that someone brought in that probably should have remain undiscovered.
But all in all, a good day. I just wish I had had a bit more vim and vigor to carry me through the day.

In it, he describes a maddening situation where he’s playing an audition for a young girl who is not prepared. She gives him the music in the wrong key. He sight-transposes it flawlessly; however, since the girl is not prepared, she does not do very well, with lots of wrong notes. And after each one, she glances over at him, like HE’s causing HER to make all the mistakes. Afterwards, she says to him, “Thanks, anyway!” as she picks up the music. And the person conducting the audition says to him, “Transposing at sight is very difficult. Not everyone can do it.” The young girl's glances at her accompanist had apparently fooled the director, as well!!
So, DR JoseSPiano, has anything like this ever happened to you?
Well... I don't think anything like that has ever happened to me. However, I have been "stumped" a few times by some pieces of music (I freely admit to that), but I've made it quite known that if anything went wrong it was most definitely my fault. In other words, they could Blame Jose. ;)

Well, I've just spent the morning trying to avoid a charge against my checkcard.
The result was to cancel the card.
That led to contacting folks with whom I have orders pending and giving them all new credit card information.
The reason for this: "Grill Daddy"
That's right. "Grill Daddy".
I ordered a Grill Daddy three weeks ago. Yesterday, I tried contacting the good folks (thillco.com) who sent me an order confirmation to inquire as to the status of my order. I felt I should have my Grill Daddy by now.
To my surprise/dismay, my e-mails were returned with a note that the addressee was "no longer a valid e-mail address." I went online and, to my horror, found many entries about scams, including a local TV news report on the Grill Daddy....one part saying the item didn't work well and the other part saying that few people who order it ever get it, but do get multiple charges against their credit cards.
I am happy to report no charges for "Grill Daddy" were applied to my now-cancelled checkcard. It will take about a week to replace the card, but there it is.
And another huge lesson learned....always check online before ordering from "infomercials".

Hmm... Is this another "danger" of Hi-Def/Plasma TV? Do people with such televisions tend to buy more stuff from informercials? Do the products being hawked "pop" more on the big screen?

But I think that they have a separate orchestra/band playing...not the actors as orchestra. I'll find out in an hour and a half!

This has actually been an okay day, sort of. Only one really annoying thing, and that thing was so outrageous as to be laughable, when an agent (a complete - forgive my language - ASShole) of one of our Brain cast members sent Equity a copy of a private e-mail volley with me, in which I'd responded to a thoroughly obnoxious e-mail and told him how much this show had cost me to produce. Since the number I quoted, really in anger at him, was way above what is allowed by Equity to be spent on the production, he thought he'd be cute and try to cause us trouble. I got a note from Equity saying they were instructing NYMF to hold our box-office monies until we showed proof that we spent what we were supposed to. Needless to say, I responded to this idiot from Equity immediately, asking her a) why she felt it necessary to go to NYMF first, based on a third party private correspondence without calling the general manager and asking US first, and b) I informed her in no uncertain terms that we spent exactly what we were supposed to and that we have a paper trail a mile long to back it up. I then informed her that when you factored in the actor and stage manager money, the rehearsal hall money, my living expenses for seven weeks, flights, my lodgings for seven weeks, the NYMF advance fee, NONE OF WHICH ARE PART OF THE PRODUCTION BUDGET, that the number I spouted off in anger to the agent adds up perfectly - you take all those numbers and add them to the allowable production budget and voila - it's the number I spouted. I told her I expected a response to my e-mail, and I copied NYMF (who were shocked by Equity's letter and totally understood my response to it). Furthermore, my GM has written her own accusatory letter to them and basically told them they will NOT be holding ANY monies of ours and that all they had to do was ask for our expense sheet. They will have that tomorrow. Meanwhile, I'm going to do whatever I can to cause this ASShole agent grief, including filing a formal complaint against him with Equity and NYMF.

When our DS Rob was about 10 years old, I went away on a business trip and came back to find him totally enthralled with ancient Egypt, including having chalked hieroglyphics on the chimney in our garage. Come to find out, he and Richard had watched Stargate while I was gone and that's what piqued Rob's interest.
Not long after that, we got our one and only pet, a sweet parakeet who received the ferocious name, Horus-The Egyptian Falcon God.
I just checked, and, yep, the hieroglyphics can still be seen out in the garage.

Our huge windstorm that is due tomorrow is now expected to bring winds to the Seattle/Tacoma (and Olympia) area of about 40 mph. Lots more on the coast and to the north. I don't think I will miss any sleep over the approaching storm.

Hmm.. Salad - Romaine, dried cranberries, blueberries, walnuts and bleu cheese. Quite yummy!
*It's one of the prepared ones I picked up at Westerly Market last night (sort of a hometown Whole Foods). It's quite a good salad, and it's a very generous portion - everything is packed into the container. I don't know how anyone could eat this "on the go" without making a mess and having half of it fall to the ground. But again, it's tasty.

Hmm... So, as for tonight's "Private Practice"... I'm trying to figure out if there is a difference between good writing and audience manipulation. ;)
*However, it was nice to see in the previews for next week's show, a little different "mood".

Well, I ended up watching MEET THE ROBINSONS two more times. Once to see it again as I wanted to to appreciate how everything fit together at the beginning after all of the reveals at the end.
Then, I listened to the audio commentary, very revelatory and the kind of comments I enjoy when someone has facts about the production that don't come out in other features. Plus there was a very funny gag in the commentary that tickled me.

I also watched the other special features on the disc. As with most new Disney films, they don't load a ton of extras on these releases. They save the two disc sets for Platinum Editions and the other classics, I guess.
I do think the beautiful Rob Thomas song "Little Wonders" will be an Oscar contender.

PUSHING DAISIES irritated me as much as always at the very beginning, but later the show was better, and I did enjoy Raul Esparza's role. Note to Kristin: open your eyes and see what's in front of you. A lot more appealing than what you're pining for.

PRIVATE PRACTICE. Again, interesting cases, and the most monotonous personal stories among the doctors EVER. All these people seem interested in is finding a hook-up. Don't they have hobbies? Other friends? Lives outside of this clinic? We're four episodes into the season (plus that pilot we saw last year), and all we know is that their love lives are lonely. Well, join a dance class. Volunteer at a local soup kitchen. Find a political candidate and work for him/her. Do SOMETHING to quell the loneliness if it's so bad.

DIRTY SEXY MONEY had my least favorite siblings in the spotlight this week: the twins and Peter Krause's former lover, all of whom I found obnoxious and uninteresting and obvious. The Donald Sutherland story and the new business with Blair Underwood is what's going to keep me watching.

Back from a rehearsal with the wonderful Julie Reiber, who will, I guarantee you, bring down the roof of the theater with The Wizard and I - astonishing! Earlier I'd rehearsed with the equally wonderful Beth Malone, who's song from Sister Act - The Musical was fantastic, too. What fun that part is!

Boo usually sleeps with me, but I have a feeling that may have just changed. She just discovered the top of my cable box/DVR that gets very warm She has been sleeping on it all night. We'll see if she comes upstairs tonight

What a day! What a week! I have been SOOO busy and I'm loving it. I think part of the reason I'm so busy is it's rained for about 6-7 days in a row and no one can work construction or other outside jobs so they are finally getting around to doing things like going to the lawyer.

I'm having second thoughts about hiring the new assistant. She really wants full time and basically told me if I can't do that by the first of the year or shortly after that she'll have to start looking. The thing is, I'm not sure I want full time at all. In my last practice I never had any full time help, only part time. We were both very busy, but it worked great. I'm one of those people who is happiest when I'm really busy. When I have help, I have to delegate and I don't get to really get into the zone and just stay there. I think I'm going to talk to her tomorrow and explain what I'm looking for. She may not want it and if not, that's ok.

I had a long talk with the lawyer who took my old job. I'd say he's in his early 50s or so. He left private practice to take the job, just like I did 6 years ago. He doesn't really sound very happy. He said he was ready for a change and...well...this is a change. He said he thought it would be busier but that it is a change for him so he guessed he likes it.

Anyway, I came home to feed the girls then went out for a wonderful comfort food dinner of baked chicken (the kind that falls off the bone) with mashed potatoes and gravy and a small salad . Oh and stuffing and cranberry sauce. It was SOOOO good. It's a 1/2 a chicken. I ate the dark meat and brought the white meat home. I had to save room for a hot fudge sundae. The Green Gables is famous for that.

Then I watched a little TV and went back to the office for about 1 1/2 hours. I love to be down there at night. No phones, no people. The view out my window almost makes it seem like I'm in a real city, lol.

Hmm... Is this another "danger" of Hi-Def/Plasma TV? Do people with such televisions tend to buy more stuff from informercials? Do the products being hawked "pop" more on the big screen?
It was quite the innocuous infomercial...on a digital channel. NOT HD AT ALL!
The Grill Daddy spokesman promised it would clean the porcelain rack on my electric grill. The porcelain rack cannot be scrubbed with steel wool or sprayed with oven cleaner. And stuff STICKS to it like glue. The Grill Daddy was supposed to apply firm hard rubber scrubbers with steam.
Steam, do you hear! Steam! And hard rubber scrubbers.
Why, it was a match made in heaven. I just HAD to have one. I envisioned clean, smooth porcelain on the grill rack.
But no.
Not now.

On the other hand -- and just for argument's sake -- how many really GOOD folks out there who qualify as assistant can afford to do so "part time"?
You get what you pay for, Cilla...and sometimes, a little delegation might become a good thing, especially if the assistant is sharp and can work independently and pleases you with her work.
