Well...last night's Sweeney Todd at Capital Playhouse here in Olympia, was very, very, very (that's three verys) good!!  This was not George Hearn's Sweeney.  Jarrod Emick's Sweeney was very intense and very dark.  He also used an accent but sadly, not consistently.  It was sort of a Cockney accent and not just a generic British accent.  Mrs. Lovett was also very good.

The look of the production itself was very spare.  Click HERE (http://www.capitalplayhouse.com/Photos/Sweeney/index.html) for pictures from their website (although there are none of Jarrod).  They had the insane assylum concept from the Broadway revival and only 11 actors, but other than when Anthony, Johanna and the Beggar Woman became part of the chorus, it was very easy to tell what was going on.  They did use a separate orchestra.  No one played their own instruments.

Title: Re:LITTLE KNOWN FACTS
Post by: George on October 18, 2007, 02:04:26 AM
As far as I could tell, they pretty much did the complete show.  They didn't add the new(ish) lullaby for the Beggar Woman but they did both the shaving and tooth pulling parts of "The Contest" with Pirelli, as well as Judge Turpin's self-flagellating version of "Johanna."  The guy playing Judge Turpin was much too young.  He looked like he was in his 20s...and seemed like he only had the experience of someone in his 20s. ::) He certainly overacted his little heart out, though.

After the show, I stayed and spoke with Jeff Kingsbury (the director of ST:TDBOFS and managing director of Capital Playhouse) and waited for Jarrod.  I think that there was only one other person who waited to see him after the show.  He chatted with me for several minutes. :) He's a little taller than me...not as tall as he seems on stage.  He's very skinny and quite attractive in a rugged sort of way and a VERY nice man. :D

Re 30's singers, I think the one who has 'aged' the least is Miss Ethel Waters. Two of my favorite tracks are I.Berlin's Heat Wave, and 'Love Turned the light out' from Cabin in Sky; Oddly enough, her hit from As Thousands cheer, Suppertime, the song about lynching, wasn't recorded til about a decade later the the show's opening.Perhaps it was too controversial. There's also a Dietz Schwartz pair of songs, the non p.c. Hottentoteand  Potentate("I gave 'em that Hotcha/That je ne sais quois-cha")Thief in the night has a matchless comedy monolg; I found these songs on an old Columbia records album(re-issued on CD) called Ethel Water on Stage and Screen; An a paris label re-issueed EVERYTHING she ever records on an 8 or 9 CD set.

Thanks for the ST report, DR GEORGE and the link.

I liked the pictures - but I think the hair design person for that show must be one twisted individual.  Everybody is very unique - to use a word - but Mrs. Lovett has Barbra Streisand's Funny Girl hair.

Shocking news about the agent and performer.  Sounds as if someone thinks he/she is a bigger star than they are.

Causing grief for someone who works in the industry and OFFERS work in the industry is always a bad idea IMO.

I saw Hairspray last night. I won tickets at the Broadway Cares Flea Market. They were very good seats, Row P in the orchestra on the aisle. I saw the original cast but Anthony has never seen the show. He enjoyed it a lot but I was disappointed. I still think it's a good show but it's been running for 5 years and it's showing age. First of all, the show is

TOO LOUD

At times it's painful and jarring. Just because it's so loud though, that doesn't mean I could understand the actors as they sang. Many, many lyrics were lost in the jumble of begin over-miced and bad diction and sloppy performances.

When the show is paced well it doesn't seem too long but Act 1 is almost 90 minutes and last night there were times I was looking at my watch. The pacing seems off and the jokes aren't landing very well, especially the jokes between Edna and Wilbur. The most disappointing thing about the show right now is the lack of chemistry between Paul Vogt (Edna) and Jim J. Bullock (Wilbur). I have the original cast to remember (with great fondness) and anyone would be hard pressed to live up to that but these two just don't have a spark. When Harvey was on stage I never thought fora moment that he was anyone but Edna. It was great. I saw Paul Vogt and saw a man playing a woman in a fat suit. Yes, he can sing better than Harvey but something is missing. I was especially disturbed at the "break-up" in You're Timeless to Me, the great soft shoe duet in the second act. It's a funny number but it's also supposed to be sweet and charming and loving. You see how much Wilbur really, truly loves Edna. Well, not last night. Bullock spent half the number breaking up and laughing and I'm not sure what happened to cause it, unless, as Anthony surmised, that it's a "staged" break up. It might have happened once and they decided to keep it. The audience eats it up and gives a huge hand at the end but it left a bad taste in my mouth. That's not what the number is about. It takes me out of the show and takes away any good feeling I have for the characters. It just makes me realize how lucky I was to see the original cast.

Lance Bass is in the show. He plays Corny Collins. I'm sure he's a very nice person and I bet he loves his mother very much. Sorry, I'm not usually so snarky but I couldn't help it.

Michelle Pawk was very good as Velma and Sharon Foster did a nice job playing all the Jackie Hoffman roles.

The show, IMHO, is a shadow of its former self. It seems to be doing very well, probably helped along by the movie but I don't know if I would recommend it anymore.

That being said, before I saw the show I sent a review off to Beverley at the BBC (it hasn't played yet) because Hairspray has begun performances in the West End with Michael Ball as Edna and based on my original recollections I recommended the show saying I hope it plays as well as it did when I saw it in 2002. So, my legion of fans, if that segment is ever played (I have no control over when Dear Beverley plays my segments) keep in mind that I hadn't seen the show since my original viewing 5 years ago. I didn't know I would be seeing the show again before I sent off the segment recommending it.

It is now 8:07am and the database is still wonky.

Thursday morning greetings!  It's a very dark and rainy morning here in SW Ohio.  All the way to work, I kept thinking to myself how much I didn't want to drive to Columbus (2 hours each way) this afternoon/evening for a 45-minute reception.  Well, my decision was made for me when I got here and found that we have 6 people missing from our department today and they really, really, really need my information-waitressing help.

Good morning!

It was overcast and a trifle misty this morning making the moderately cool morning seem humid and clammy. Not supposed to be as warm today as the past few days, but I'll stil be wearing shorts when I go out to lunch later. The sun has come out now, and it's pretty (but doesn't seem much like fall at al.)

My JAZZ SINGER only shipped yesterday, so I won't get it until Saturday (if then). Too busy to watch it anyway, but I'm most interested in the lengthy documentary about the dawn of sound. And all the Vitophone shorts are also tempting. Looking forward to having some breathing room next week and can watch some of the DVDs that have come in during the past month for fun. I also have about four or five movies on the DVR that need watching so I can clear them off.

I've mentioned this before, but in the 1960s, I got an RCA LP caled STARS OF THE SILVER SCREEN 1929-1930 that is one of my dearest possessions. Though most of the songs on this LP are studio recordings and not from the soundtracks of the movies, I ADORE this record. On it are Fanny Brice singing "Cookin' Breakfast for the One I Love," Everett Marshall with "Mr. and Mrs. Sippi," Gloria Swanson's "Love, Your Magic Spell Is Everywhere," John Boles with "Nichaavo," Jeanette MacDonald's "Dream Lover," Ramon Navarro "Pagan Love Song," and songs from Helen Kane, Maurice Chevalier, Bebe Daniels, and so many more.

Nothing has been more disappointing to me than the fact that RCA never transferred this to CD. I have practiucally worn out this LP.

VIVA LAUGHLIN gets a premiere following CSI tonight, and I will be watching to quell my curiosity. Actually, despite damning reviews from all of the national critics that I read, my local TV critic gave it three stars (out of four).

Some responses to last night's posts:

MATTH: "PRIVATE PRACTICE. Again, interesting cases, and the most monotonous personal stories among the doctors EVER. All these people seem interested in is finding a hook-up. Don't they have hobbies? Other friends? Lives outside of this clinic? We're four episodes into the season (plus that pilot we saw last year), and all we know is that their love lives are lonely. Well, join a dance class. Volunteer at a local soup kitchen. Find a political candidate and work for him/her. Do SOMETHING to quell the loneliness if it's so bad."

I couldn't help but chuckle at this. It echoes some of my sentiments so well.

Deborah Kerr has died at 86.

Somehow that doesn't seem so old these days.

How terribly sad this news is.

Deborah Kerr was one of my earliest favorite actresses, mostly by virtue of having seen her in "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison" on Saturday Night at the Movies (on NBC) and, later, "The Journey".  (My first fave was Susan Hayward).

I was thinking strongly about her last month and did some Googling to find out how she has been doing.  I vividly recall her appearance at the Academy Awards..ohh, a decade ago?....for her career achievement Oscar.  She was thrilled but seemed "out of it" to a degree.  I did not know at that time that she had been suffering from Parkinson's Disease for many years.

Monday evening, during his intro for the TCM airing of "Young Bess," Osborne informed me that the movie project was initially intended for Deborah Kerr to star but that things intervened, delaying the filming.  By the time MGM gave the project the go-ahead, Kerr was thought to be too mature for the young Elizabeth and was cast, instead, as Catherine.  Jean Simmons won the lead.

It's just as well, because Kerr made a very mature splash around that time in "From Here to Eternity."

Kerr very much resembled my maternal (step) grandmother...complexion, facial features/structure and hair.

Another star has gone nova.

No spoilers.

Re: DR MattH's views of the siblings on DIRTY SEXY MONEY.

You hate the twins and the sister who is after Peter Krause.

I actually love the twins.  I guess the girl from the OC can be a bit irritating at times. But I'm sort of fond of the male twin and his girlfriend.

I will agree that the sister (is it Karen?) is so annoying. But i guess that's her character.

I am also interested in the mysteries with donald sutherland, the father, and Simon Elder.

As for PUSHING DAISIES (again no spoilers).

So DR MattH the part that grates on  your nerves is the narrative at the beginning and the sweet fable aspect of it?  I could see why not everybody might like that. But i love that part of it.  It makes it so different than anything else on tv.

I'm liking Kristin Chenoweth much better. And the cast is so zany.  And i love the mysteries.  I think it's hilarious in such a silly way.

Much of the charm, for me, of singers from the 1920s and, especially, the 1930s is the "dated" style. Some of my favorites are:

Gertrude Niesen
Dick Foran (aka Nick Foran)
Felix Knight
John Boles (as mentioned by MattH, and who does a swell number in the movie STAND UP AND CHEER...although he is probably much better known for his role as Dr. Frankenstein in the 1931 horror classic)
Al Bowlly (his rendition of CLOSE YOUR EYES just sweeps me off of my feet...just a beautiful song..and you can listen to it here --> http://www.amazon.com/Very-Thought-You-Noble-Orchestra/dp/B000001HHF/ref=pd_bxgy_m_text_b/104-9043727-9363125  (http://www.amazon.com/Very-Thought-You-Noble-Orchestra/dp/B000001HHF/ref=pd_bxgy_m_text_b/104-9043727-9363125) )

MusicGuy, I don't remember the space, shutters & small counter between the kitchen & what I'm guessing is the dining room.  Was it always there?

When we remodeled our kitchen the counter tops were just about the last thing to be done.

Cilla, I think Ron gave you some good advise about using an assistant the way one should be used.

I understand how you feel as Keith always had problems delegating, and his assistants used to complain about the fact.  If you have a really good one you might find you will use her skills more and more, freeing you up to take on more and more clients.

When our kitchen was redecorated, we ran out of money before replacing the counter tops.  That's why there are harvest gold counters in an otherwise cool blue, white, and brushed chrome kitchen.

Interesting Ginny.  Did you make the decision to leave the counter tops before redecorating the kitchen?  Otherwise I think the counter tops would have been removed before you ran out of money & you would be completely without them.

LOL, Jane!  Our approach to home improvement projects is more "make it up as we go along."  The kitchen project was just cosmetic - removal of ugly wallpaper and flooring and new paint and vinyl flooring.

Actually, it turned out that I was glad the harvest gold counters were still there.  Not long ago, the man who build our house for his family to live in 50+ years ago was in town visiting his daughter (our age) and they came to tour her childhood home.  The wife/mother had died not long before, and Chris (the daughter) ran her hands along the countertops and said, "It's still Mom's kitchen."   :'(

Perhaps someone can forward this notice on to BJ.

Please forward to your acting acquaintances: My writer/producer friend Scott Essman, for whom I have done several makeup/film projects, is looking for a 6 to 6-foot three, tall, slim actor to get into makeup this Saturday October 20th at 11:00am in Monrovia for an appearance honoring the 75th Anniversary of Universal's "The Mummy." The actor will recreate the famous scene of Boris Karloff's Im-Ho-Tep leaving his sarcophagus to snatch the Scroll of Thoth. It will likely be a full-body makeup which will take a couple of hours.

I will be appearing as Jack Pierce, the makeup artist.

We will be appearing with Ivonna Cadaver, Elvira-like local horror show host.

If you or someone you know may be interested, please contact:

As for the TOD :

I love Gertrude Neissen (sp?), Ruth Etting, Fred Astaire, some Helen Morgan, early Bing Crosby (accompanied by the theatre organ no less!!), and for variety there were some incredibly quirky tenors with extremely nelly voices.  Paul Small was one of them.

But one of my all time favorites (that was mentioned earlier) was Ethel Waters, especially singing "Suppertime."  It can still put me in tears.

I haven't seen the show. I just know that we all experience set-backs and disappointments in life and believe that it's how we deal with them that makes us who we are.

I couldn't agree with you more, Matt.

I don't know, when I have disappointments I just dive into work.  Seems to me that's what they are doing.

More than you probably wanted to know about methane department:  Leave it to us ecologically minded northwesterners, but one of the big movements (so to speak) here is called "Biomass," and it produces energy from, you guessed it, manure and the methane that manure releases.  Some farms can power themselves just on the biomass they themselves produce.  It's a major source of "green" (well, .......) energy initiatives up here.

I don't ever want to know how a cow releases methane!

Just how you think they do. There are actually companies working at turning that methane into usable energy. No lie

DR MBarnum, Colin Clive played Dr/ Frankenstein. John Boles played Victor, a friend of the family.

Oh, Spoo, you are right.

And I always thought Mae Clarke shoulda been with John, rather then Colin.

But I am getting steadily better

I'm pleased you are improving and thank you for the much needed laugh.

This morning I broke my left wrist in 2 places.  Keith said he didn't think it was broken, the nurse at emergency would have bet $50 bucks it wasn't, the doctor said it wasn't.  I knew what i felt, hoping all the time i was wrong.  Thankfully the x-ray technicians did a good job or the second break might have been missed.

The good news.....So far I'm not in much pain and it wasn't my right wrist.  I don't need surgery.

I have a splint and a sling and need to keep it elevated.  I'm to keep the splint on for 5-7 days before i see the orthopedist, to allow time for any swelling before a cast goes on.  If I'm really lucky, by then i won't need a regular cast & something simpler will work.

Nursie! What a calamity!  Is it a huge cast? Has Keith signed it?  Are you suing the owner of the mutt that ran over you?

I've been watching the end of PROJECT RUNWAY's second (???) season, so I'm feeling rather shallow at the moment.  I love the way everyone on the show, when they mention Olympus Fashion Week, pronounces it as if it were the Holy Grail or the equivalent of taking communio  at a mass presided over by Jesus himself.  Now I'm watching UGLY BETTY and feeling much better.

And from the Bureau of Social Security:
Quote
Now what can you do to treat gout? Generally, treatment of gout begins with pain management, and this is usually achieved with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and glucocorticoid injections in the affected joints. Additionally, ibuprofen or ointments such as Preparation H may help with inflammation on a short-term basis.

Has George been online this afternoon?  The power is going out in a lot of areas down by him.  I just wondered if he had power at work?

We lost power at work at about 3:00 because a tree fell down on a power line and we were all sent home!  :D I went to my sister's house (she still has power) and put up a light fixture over her new kitchen counter (after turning off the power).  I'm now at home and it looks like I didn't loose power here, at all.

Next, I watched last night's LIFE. I liked the murder story and was really fooled by what was going on.

I know the story arc of the show is the main character discovering who commited the crime he was sent to prison for. I've seen two of the four aired episodes, and those scenes now totally lost me. I wonder if it's a good idea to keep persuing this. Maybe they ought to just solve the case and let the show have these closed-ended mysteries each week.

UGLY BETTY had a lot of unpleasantness tonight. Sure, that keeps things stirred up, but I was disappointed in the Henry story, very unhappy with the turn in Justin's story (though I'm assuming this mood swing will be temporary), but I was tickled by Amanda's search for her father.

I agree about Victor Garber. And I think he's been on a bit of a diet. He looked very svelt tonight.

Jane-I am soooo sorry for your breaks. The very best healthy vibes and marimbas. At least what is LEFT is your RIGHT wrist. I hope you are right handed. Take Care Of Yourself.

Finished watching this "documentary" included on The Jazz Singer DVD - just another complete bore-fest from Spark Hill Productions, the nadir of these people who do these things.  Yes, there's interesting footage, nice factual information, all presented without a point of view, without any kind of structure or drama, and believe me, there was plenty of drama.  Apparently Spark Hill's motto is Take The Money And Run.  They don't even list a director.

Just got back from dinner with James Ivory. We had the best time! My girlfriend Kris made 2 kinds of raita, one spicy, one the normal one. There was a shrimp dish, a chicken dish, delicious rice with fruit and pistachios, broccoli in a garlic sauce, and for dessert, a flourless chocolate cake.

I brought 2 bottles of a Pinot Noir recommended to me by a lover of Indian food at our local, very good, wine shop. TheHHW comments about avoiding tannins and oak were right on the money! And also a bottle of Sancere? (Can't remember how to spell it.) There were 9 of us and we seemed to put away quite a bit of alcohol. James Ivory made martinis for us before dinner, too.

I was assigned the DJ task and put together 3 hours of music, with some tunes I wondered if Jim would notice, covers of pieces used in his films, a couple Eartha Kitt cuts from THE WILD PARTY (I never saw Jim's version of this but will probably try to get it.)

Jim seemed totally entertained and wanted to know where everyone was from, so we had to go around the table and tell our origins. It turns out that Jim is from Oregon, the same small town where Greg went to school (near Clamath (sp?) Falls.

He told a lot of great stories, including watching ROOM WITH A VIEW at a screening in England for the Queen. She had a lady-in-waiting on either side of her, but next to the lady was Jim, and he imitated her reaction when the nude scene took place. She lifted up her knee (he noted that she had very tiny feet!) and then started laughing her head off.

He also talked about all the "relationship meetings" he had gone to. This is something that agents would do, and they would usually happen when as star was on their way up, or their career was declining. He met with Sally Field and John Travolta when they were on the decline. He wanted to cast Travolta in SLAVES OF NY but Travolta didn't think the role was right for him, because at the time, Travolta considered himself a character actor and there were only 6 characters he could do.

He also said that he hasn't been watching much tv because the air conditioner drowns out his TV, but he will start watching it again once it gets cooler. (I'm assuming this is in his NY apartment, not his estate in upstate NY.)

We all laughed so much, and I can't repeat a lot of it, because this is a family site, but it was a great evening!

Now...back to working on taxes before our meeting tomorrow!

And dinner again with James tomorrow night but at a slightly larger table this time!

And. . .they don't give John Williams any credit for the use of his themes from JFK. . . .I preferred the archival clips within the documentary to the actual documentary.
I'm so happy to have this set, being a Jolson freak from way, way back, but almost as important to me is that WINNIE LIGHTNER is seen TWICE - once in that short subject on the Warners' 25th, and secondly in the "Finale" from GOLD DIGGERS OF BROADWAY.

HHW WAS there, in that Eldar (Nature Boy) and Guy Haines (You Must Believe In Spring) were both part of the music mix, and we discussed the NYMF and Greg's cameo on stage. James got a kick out of the story about the woman recognizing Greg on the street a few days later: "Hey! It's Oh Crap, You Want My Name!"
