In addition to smashing down Prof Dumbledore's closet door (previously reported by George) COMCAST ENTERTAINMENT (http://www.comcast.net/entertainment/index.jsp?cat=ENTERTAINMENT&fn=/2007/10/20/793067.html) ALSO REPORTED:

Quote
Hollywood Union Authorized to Strike

LOS ANGELES - Members of Hollywood's film and television writers union have overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike anytime after their contract expires at the end of the month.

More than 5,000 members of the Writers Guild of America cast ballots, with 90 percent voting in favor of authorizing the strike, the union said Friday evening. Members voted Thursday.

If memory serves, the last such strike in 1988 brought us some newTV fare from down-under (the revised Mission Impossible, for one).

Quote
Pork & Sons by Stephane Reynaud is the quintessential pig cookbook, featuring 150 simple and delicious rustic pork recipes such as pork with dates and dried apricots, warm sausage and Puy lentil salad, tagliatelle with lardon, choucroute, even the ultimate bacon club sandwich. And Reynaud should know. Not only is he co-owner of the acclaimed restaurant Villa 9 Trois in Montreuil (just outside of Paris), he also comes from a long line of generations of butchers and farmers in the Ardeche, just southwest of Grenoble.

In his authentic and intensely personal cookbook, Reynaud presents us with a multitude of ideas on how to cook fine and succulent pork, while inviting us to share his family's age-old passion for the pig and to celebrate the long delicious history between man and swine. This affectionate tribute includes enticing photographs of each dish, and between each chapter there are photographs of the region, the faces of the region and of their daily work, as well as hand-drawn illustrations of the pig itself in many hilarious poses.

DR TOMovOZ - this is what Jules Nurrish the writer of NO ORDINARY JOE says:

I did not use actual pieces from the published Diaries, instead opting to write the narrative myself, in the often outrageous style of Orton. It was challenging to try and successfully make the main character believable, while creating a voiceover narrative that belonged to a semi-fictional Orton.

So perhaps he wrote that line himself.

I rarely eat fast food anymore but I do remember Arby's back when they used real roast beast. There was a big ole honkin' piece of meat on a spit in the back of the restaurant and they would carve that off for sandwiches. That's a long ago memory. Chipolte is good for (too) large Mexican delights. There are no Dairy Queens in Manhattan (that I know of) but I used to like going there as a child.

I have a free day today, too!
My favorite fast food is from SONIC.

Late last night I got a phone call from sometimes DR eviltwin, who had gone to a Stephen Schwartz celebration at Town Hall which was populated by many stars, including Schwartz himself, Karen Akers, Liz Callaway, Maz von Essen and. . . .JASON GRAAE!
The reason Janet was phoning me so late, was that she had several messages for me from Jason.
Before the call, I was watching a film written by DR Pogue, PSYCHO III, which I have never seen. . .I will finish watching it sometime today.  I hadn't realized that Universal offered a triple feature dvd set of the three sequels to PSYCHO.

BK - The score to HOME ON THE RANGE was quite exciting, but got stiffed in the Oscar race that year since the film was a box office disapointment.  The lyrics to Alan Menken's music were written by the talented and by any standards fabulous Glenn Slater.   Glenn and his also gifted wife Wendy came to LAST STARFIGHTER at NYMF, by the way.

(I thought the song "Will the Sun Ever Shine Again?" sung by Bonnie Raitt in the HOME ON THE RANGE film was as good as, or better than,  any of the nominees that year.)

As for the Topic of the Day...

McDonald's was always the stand-by.  However, in Richmond, the Arby's were the way to go.  The gentleman who owns the franchises there basically upgraded the standard Arby's fare.  In fact, some of the locations are more like full-service restaurants with food-brought-to-your-table-service, as well as extended menu offerings such as BBQ Chicken and Prime Rib(!).  And they run that 5-for-$5 Roast Beef Sandwich Special, well...  Dinner is on me!  I liked their Curly Fries, but if the wait was not too long, I would get their Potato Cakes.  And a Jamocha Shake.

I used to always get a Taco Salad at Taco Bell, and then one day all that nutritional information finally sunk in about what I was eating.  :-\  However, a Soft Chicken Taco makes for a quick, semi-nutritious bite.

Oh, and Popeye's too.  And I see that they've brought back the onion rings again. Hmm...

Hmm... I should go see Mary Poppins to catch Alexandra's first show as Jane Banks... But it's such a nice day outside... And I'll probably be seeing the show (again) tomorrow with my parents...  So... We'll see...

However, a friend of mine is coming in today from New Hampshire, and he wanted to hit the Metropolitan Museum this afternoon, so...

Decisions, decisions.  Options, Options.

Good morning, all! Restless sleep and strange dreams, including one about the Macbeths and one about DR Ginny and Richard visiting in Manhattan over a Christmas holiday that seemed awfully sunny and warm.

My brother Randy just called about some estate issues, but I believe I may have finally won a battle with the Macbeths. Since I trust neither of them, I'm not celebrating yet.

Today, a lot of work on the chart for David Burnham. On Monday I have a discussion with the orchestra paying for this job and I'm sending nothing out till the billing is in place. David came by yesterday afternoon to pick up his original materials and we dished a bit about last night's performance at Town Hall; he was singing "Out There," from The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

That's the news at 10:15 am.

As I have said many times here, that movie was extremely underrated by all. because it was the traditional 2-D animation, folks just turned their noses up at it, and they missed out on a really funny, really charming movie. I loved the entire score for the movie, too.

Well, we did visit Manhattan between Christmas 1982 and New Year's 1983, but it was COLD.  During our 25th wedding anniversary week there in January 2006, the weather was warm enough that we sat outside waiting for a table at Cowgirl.

TOD - I like fast food 'way more than I should.  I do try to limit portions by ordering things like the Whopper, Jr., at Burger King.  Richard and I also split an order of fries, rather than each of us eating supersizes.  We also stay away from the "value meals" to avoid feeling obligated to drink soft drinks, preferring water when we can get it.

Some guilty pleasures:

Taco Bell, Nachos Bell Grande (hold the green onions)
Wendy's Monterrey Chicken Sandwith (not always available, thank goodness)

Good morning, HHW.

TOD:

I'm not much of one for fast food, but if you use a loose and literal interpretation, ie, food that is served quickly, as opposed to the usual large chains, then I have a candidate.

There used to be a little place near me called CALIFORNIA WRAPS. The proprietor was from Sacramento and served up Mexican food the way I like it--California style. Fresh ingredients. Not greasy. I used to walk over there frequently and chow down on one of their juicy burritos. So good! He sold the business a year or so ago and the new owner promptly went out of business. The place that's there now has put my favorite burrito on their menu as well, but it's just not the same. You can't even taste the guacomole. The portions of the other ingredients aren't right, either, and it's just bland. A good illustration in how it's not just what you assemble, it's HOW you assemble it. I still miss my old favorite burritos.

I used to love Hardees because it had a bacon cheeseburger on its menu when others did not.

Otherwise, it was the original MacDonald's Quarter-Pounder I dearly loved.

They are much small sandwiches today from the originals.  Likewise, the original "Whopper" was much larger as a sandwich.  And the traditional Whopper once had slaw on it...at least, it did on the east coast.

I'm not much of one for fast food, but if you use a loose and literal interpretation, ie, food that is served quickly, as opposed to the usual large chains, then I have a candidate.

my kind of fast food.  last time we were in Portland Bryan took us to the row of food trucks and named the good ones.  we decided on Falafels.   watching the two people, especially the front guy, work was fascinating.  lunch was delicious and the best falafel I've had in a long time..

Although, it's been a while since I've had falafel, and there's currently a sort of "falafel war" going on in NYC.  Two international chains just opened up branches around Union Square, and the buzz and reviews on both of them have been pretty good.  Hmm...

My lunch today is interesting.  I stopped last night at Dorothy Lane Market (http://www.dorothylane.com) and, from the deli, purchased a portion of Cranberry Tuna Salad, which I brought for my lunch today.  Cranberries and tuna are an unusual flavor combo, and it's a little dry.  You'd think for $10.99/pound they could use enough mayo to make this stuff stick to a Triscuit.

All in all, I'd rather go to lunch with DRs Jose and Elmore.

I never was able to buy into the Cars concept.  I mean, it was about a world where the cars themselves were the people, and they watched the races in these fantastic stadiums, and filmed them on cameras so the races could be projected on these enormous screens, and they lived in these cute car-friendly motels and everything...

HOW THE FREAKING BUNNIES WERE ALL THESE THINGS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN BUILT???

CARS DON'T HAVE HANDS!!!

The whole thing just didn't make much sense.

At least with Happy Feet, the penguins weren't supposed to have built things they logically could not have built.  (And it was a cute story, too.)

DR Cillaliz - When will you go see Callie today?

Thanks for asking.  I called the vet at bout 8:30 AM and he had good news, Callie had done almost all her duty and could go home today.  So I did some shopping, stopped at the office and got some work to do over the weekend and then picked her up at noon. So she is home with Boo and I.  She's a lot stronger than last month and seems fine, other than a smelly rear end., but she was only in over night this time and only had 2 enemas instead of 6 or 7.   The vet has prescribed a new stool softener in addition to what we're doing now. And if I can get them both to eat wet food, no more dry food.

She has no symptoms of megacolon. Her internals are fine, it's just the physical restricted opening that's the problem. So  the prognosis is good, we just have to find out what combination of meds will take care of the problem

Boo wasn't as upset about the way Callie smells this time, but she wants a lot more attention.

I get a flu shot every year because many of my clients are in jail or will be if they don't make a court date, so they are there even if they are very sick with the flu.  There are also a lot of people in jail with TB. You don't hear much about it, but it is a serious problem.  I'm not around them as much as I was when I was an FPD.  I finally decided to get tested for TB shortly before I left the FPD's office and I am negative. Whew!

I'm back from my brunch with DR elmore - another good meal with a good friend.  And I'm also back from a trek through Central Park.  What an absolutely perfect day for a walk in the Park!  A cool but not cold temperature, lots of sun, and because of the rain we had yesterday, the air in the park felt and smelled great.  -Or something to that effect.  Alas, while walking across the Sheep Meadow, I did manage to find out why people weren't sitting in certain spots: the ground was still soft and wet from the rain.  In any case, I did end up sitting on a bench for a while reading the rest of this month's "Gourmet" magazine (and I think I'm in the mood to cook Thanksgiving dinner now!), as well as take a brief unexpected nap with the sun filtering through the trees.  I Love New York!

And now I'm waiting for my friend, Dan, from New Hampshire.  He was supposed to get in around 2:00.  He was going to drive down to Norwalk, CT, and then take Metro-North in from there.  Alas, he texted me about half an hour ago to tell me that he's still caught in traffic in Massachusetts!  So... I have no idea when he'll be getting in.  *Of course, his original plan was to drive to Boston, then take the Acela in from there.  Ah, well.

DR Jose - sounds like a delightful afternoon in NYC!

I just had a call from DH Richard, who's on his way home from Wisconsin.  He was calling from West Lafayette, Indiana, which means that he should be home in time to see most of the Michigan-Illinois game (not that he cares as much as I do!)

This David Copperfield thing is interesting.  The cops seized 2 million in cash as evidence of sexual abuse of some sort?  How on earth does 2 million in cash prove that?

His annual earnings from Entertainment alone are about 57 million; so him having a cash stash of 2 Mil is like one of us with a family income of $28,570 having a cash stash of $1000 - nothing strange at all!

I guess I am not surprised that they do Dear Reader Laura. Our whole garden has to survive without much water.  We are not allowed to use fresh water for plants (if that makes sense).

You learn which plants are drought tolerant and which ones the rabbits avoid eating!

Back from early meeting and long rehearsal.  Opening number is coming along fine - still need to put one guy in and the kid.  So, one more rehearsal next Friday night - and getting this group to agree to it was like pulling teeth, which is just amazing to me.  Whatever happened to the days when you accepted a gig and didn't think you were doing the world a favor by doing so?  I just don't understand today's performers - and I don't think this happens when David Galligan does his STAGE benefits and has an ensemble.  I think those folks sign up for it and DO the rehearsals called.  This is just silly.  You'd think they wouldn't want to get up and look sloppy in front of a whole lot of people, including many industry folks.  None know their lyrics, even though they've had them for weeks now.  But, the staging is very good and maybe we'll get away with it.  Several have already said that they can't be there for our one and only band rehearsal the Friday before the show - it's just mind-boggling.  I'm afraid I'm going to be very hard-nosed about the show day sound check, because I've got to get them into mics and have them run that number on the stage.

Sigh.  I took Ebonie to the vet and they cleaned out her claw...it wasn't pretty. :P The vet said that it looks like there's a tumor behind her claw. :o On Monday, I need to make an appointment to have part of the paw amputated! :'( It'll be sent to Seattle to be tested, which would take 3-5 days after that.  Even now though, she doesn't seem to have any pain or discomfort.  She's walking on it without any trouble, so I suppose that's good.

When they do the surgery (and she's under the anesthesia), they'll also clean her teeth.  She had a little bit of build-up on some back teeth that wasn't too bad, but it'll be a lot easier to clean out when she's not awake.

Next, I watched SCARY MOVIE on Blu-ray. They're struck a new high definition master for this Blu-ray release. There wasn't one sign of age or any defects video-wise on this disc. Audio was just OK, typical for a comedy that the concentration is in the front channels rather than the rear channels.

The film does have its hilarious moments though as usual with the Wayans brothers, everything is pushed beyond any bounds of taste or propriety. AIRPLABNE took the same tack as SCARY MOVIE with its parody, but the tasteless stuff was much tamer than it is here, and to my mind, much funnier.

I watched all the extras for SCARY MOVIE, too, all ported from the standard definition DVD and all in SD. So there were six deleted scenes, the trailer, and a fairly worthless making of featurette where the Wayans brother basically complaiend about how hard it was to do the movie.

Next, I put in the newly released THE JAZZ SINGER. Since I've seen it so many times, I listened for just a but to the new Vitophone-based soundtrack, but then I flipped over and listened to the audio commentary. Just OK - not scripted so the two commentators were just talking as things came into their minds.

When it was over, I went back to the DVR and watched tonight's TORCHWOOD. I liked the episode though John Barrowman was BARELY in it this week.

And now I've got the Criterion edition of BREATHLESS in the player ready to be watched tomorrow.

Today's feel good story from OZ.

I have been trying to track down a cousin I have not met. I only knew her first name, that she played the bagpipes and her husband's name was "Splinter".  I had met her mother (my 101 year old Dad's sister in law) some years ago.

After contacting a "Pipe Band" association, a contact was eventually made and a message was left here today from my cousin.  I rang the number and my 94 year old Aunt answered!  She sounds great. She is in relatively good health and we had a good chat about family.  I thought that my Aunt may well have died some years ago.

we went into town today and i purchased a couple of small, lightweight paperbacks.  even those are difficult to hold.  i also picked up a headset for my phone, so i can talk hand free.

It's time for Comic Books!

Thanks Jose.  Tracing and connecting with your family - a family you did not have knowledge of for so many years - is very rewarding.

A sense of "wholeness" and identity fills very deep holes in the psyche.

Judging from the prices, a very successful one!

Well, I should head to bed.  Of course, I should have been in bed an hour or so ago, but...  My parents are coming in for the day from Altantic City.  Hopefully, their Greyhound bus won't hit any traffic in the morning - especially since they're seeing the 1:00 matinee of Mary Poppins.  They want to do a little sight-seeing, but they also want to attend the 5:30 Mass as St. Patrick's Cathedral.  And then it's back on the bus at 8:00 to get back to Atlantic City.  In any case, I should get some sleep.

Goodnight.

The closest we get to owning any of his work is having "prints" or the Christmas Cards he sends.

Paul and I were born in the same year and have a mutual passion for the pop music of our childhood.

Back from the event, and then watched a DVD - I'm going to write about the event in the notes, and then pay special attention to the posts, where I will REALLY write about the event, unvarnished.

None at all. Film was made as a franchise marketing tool.

So - is this a "teaser" to keep us night-owls tuned in?
