Some good wake-up news for Cillaliz:

If Callie was going to have an enema reaction, it would be over and done with:

PET EDUCATION (http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1937&articleid=2255)

Quote
Toxin:  Sodium Phosphate Enemas.
Source: Fleet enemas.
General Information :

Excessive amounts of sodium and phosphate contained in these enemas are absorbed in the colon causing an increase of sodium and phosphate in the blood. This causes changes in the other blood electrolytes which results in further symptoms.

Toxic Dose
Over 25 pounds of body weight - 4 fl. oz.
Less than 25 pounds of body weight - 2 fl. oz.

Signs
Signs usually occur within 30-60 minutes after administration of the enema, and include lethargy, ataxia, heart rhythm abnormalities, muscle tremors, and seizures. Less common are bloody diarrhea and vomiting.

BK, speaking only for myself (and Angel and Nicky), I enjoy reading all the details about the fundraiser; just as I enjoyed reading about THE BRAIN from you and Cason, the triumphs and pitfalls of DR Jose, and the daily peaks and valleys of each and every member of HHW.

Please don't stop on my account.

T.O.D.

Hmm, Halloween...  I guess I loved it as a kid; at least, for the candy (some things never change).  It was kind of like acting... you put on make-up or a costume, you perform for a couple of hours, and you get paid - in sugar.

As an adult, I am not crazy about Halloween.  I have no problem if others want to celebrate, but leave me out of it.  And that includes costumes at work.

Favorite memory?  Probably the year my sister and I put the dummy on the trolley track and... Oh wait, maybe not.

DR Edi, there is no TNT canada. And no TNT in canada.  We get most of the US stations here (except bravo, tnt, f/x and a couple of others).

There are canadian stations that get the rights to certain shows. The one that had the Closer just let it lapse. So no Closer. :(

I was also surprised by some developments (especially kitty being pregnant). Although as soon as she got ill it was apparent.

I was also extremely unhappy with the custody developments. It seemed a bit harsh (especially since she is the mother and the family is so prominent and rich). I'm not saying that they should have given sarah full custody. but at least shared seemed fair. Plus they didn't ask the kids. Okay i know this is just for temporary custody. but the whole thing just really bugged me and made me despise joe!

Good morning, all! I woke at 7:30 in a great mood.  By 8:15 the Macbeths have put me into a depression.  I just spent the past 30 minutes writing an email to my brother Randy, the Macbeths, and the esatate attorney telling the Macbeths, essentially, that I was tired of his snipes, and that once this property and estate were settled it was my hope that the only communication between us was  an occasional nod across a crowded room.

I do not want to return to Ohio in two weeks.

Off to Toyland, Fed Ex and God knows what other hell.

I don't have any specific memories of Halloween as a kid. I do remember we could and did walk all over town with no fear at all about people wanting to hurt us. Boy, have times changed!

Went to some great costume parties as an adult, but all that seems so very long ago now. Now, I turn the lights out if I'm going to be home and watch a movie or something. Any candy I buy, I buy for myself.

I'll have DEXTER and COLD CASE to watch today, and hope to start RATATOUILLE if it comes in the mail as expected. If not, I'll surely watch the DVD IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN, my first Peanuts special on the new TV. Since that special looks the best of the Peanuts specials that I have on DVD, I'm looking forward to seeing the colors really pop.

I also need to finish GIRL CRAZY which I'm only about 45 minutes into.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I remember a few from my childhood: one particularly rainy one when we lived in Seattle - but we kept on trick-or-treating!; as well as a one from when we lived in Connecticut where my brothers and I managed to up and down our street twice(!).  Some of the parents/houses were on to us, but some people just wanted to get rid of their candy.  ;)

Of course, nowadays, I love seeing my nieces and nephews in their costumes.  Soooooo cute.

TOD - One Halloween I remember from childhood, it was so cold in Detroit that my dad caught up with my mom (who was shepherding my friends and me on our rounds) and brought her her fur-lined snow boots.

For the first time in years, I'm having to come up with a costume.  Our new department managers are trying to build some comradery, so we're having costume day tomorrow.  Mine has to be something that I can just put over professional clothes, because of a luncheon meeting at the Dayton Racquet Club.  Part of DH Richard's clerical garb is a billowy white surplice with sleeves like wings, so I'm wearing that with a gold tinsel halo, and going as an angel.  Do you think I'll get the award for best re-purposing of household items?

In an effort to build comradery the Center always has a Halloween/Costume Party. I don't take part, much to the disappointment of my husband, not so much because he wants me to dress up but because I don't get the candy and cake which are provided. The Halloween party is not high on my list of comradery-type events at my place of employment. I must admit that Halloween has never (as an adult) been a big event for me. Anthony loves it but I can miss it and not mind. I know, I sound like a curmudgeon but that's me.

Very productive weekend, organizationally...CD-wise.

I may have mentioned once or twice over the past year that I'm reorganizing my condo to eliminate CD/DVD storage problems.  I've bought aluminum cases in which to store DVDs and CDs....which requires saving the art work and discarding all the keep cases and jewel boxes.

It's involved, it's a bit tedious.  I've completed the DVDs, but I'm embarrassed to say I counted on having only 1,500 DVDs to store away...and found myself actually storing closer to 2,500....those are not individual titles...and many are multiple-DVD sets (i.e. TV shows -- complete seasons), which take up a lot more room than I figured on.

My CDs are another story entirely.  I've just completed filling two 1000-CD cases.  I've had to order two more.  One will be "nearly" redundant but will allow growth room.  I have growth room for the DVDs, as well...and perhaps the number of cases I have and the limited growth room will have an end result of forcing me to back off "procuring" OR weeding out things I'll never watch/listen to again (and that's the HARD part).

I loved Halloween as a kid. I love Halloween as an adult who enjoys seeing the kids come trick-or-treating. But I don't like to see too-big kids trick-or-treating. I think the way the adults have taken over Halloween from the children is bad. And I don't like Halloween being an entire season -- I like it to be one day.

I have become an old cranky person, I guess.

I know, I sound like a curmudgeon but that's me.

Count me a Halloween curmudgeon as well.  Although it might be fun, just once, to see the Greenwich Village parade.  But generally you can find me holed up on the night with all the lights turned out.

Growing up in southern California, in a suburb packed with houses and nice weather and safe streets and lots of friends, I have fond memories.  But as an adult, it just doesn't interest me.

In my neighborhood, I'm definitely in the minority.  Most of the homeowners around me have outdoor light displays rivaling the Christmas season.

I decided to switch things up and give the StairMaster a try.  -I was actually contemplating going for a run outside, but with the cool temps and then wind(!), well... Scratch that.  In any case, this is one of those new-fangled StairMasters that actually has a moving set of stairs - rather than the original "pedals".  I had seen other people on the machines working up quite a sweat, and the machine never seemed to be moving that fast.  Well, I found out today that it doesn't have to move that fast.  After setting my initial level on the machine, I lowered it a few notches after about three minutes.  Then I lowered it again.  And then once I was in the home-stretch and noticed the "guide" was about to rev up again, well, I lowered the level again.  Whew!

It's a really low-impact exercise, and I did a good amount of stretching after my workout - about 25 minutes worth today.  It really is more of an aerobic workout than I thought - really got the heart rate up.

The first time I used an elliptical [cross-trainer], I set it at a moderate pace and went for a half hour.  I didn't feel anything at the moment, but the next day and for the next several days I could barely walk, my calves hurt so much!

It does go away, eventually, and with repeated exercise!

Thank you all for the positive vibes! I can deal with enemies and false friends, but family situations are indeed touchy.  At this point, I do believe that I can live very nicely without ever seeing the Macbeths again. That said, I am not at all looking forward to the possibility that I will have to see them in two weeks any more than I am looking forward to the tension and stress, if not downright hostility since the Macbeths are mean drunks.

This is the last work week for the two co-workers I've previously mentioned.   My boss returns to work Thursday.

She will, at least, have the pleasure of dining out with us at lunch.

We were to have a coffee and cake reception for the agency to say goodbye Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m.  This morning, however, I was told I was mistaken.  The reception is to be on Friday because it's their last day and it would be stupid to have a reception one day before they leave (!!!???!!!).

I nodded and puzzled over why this seemed wrong to me since we had discussed it as being a Thursday event.  I was also told they want me to buy the plates and forks in addition to the coffee and paper cups for the coffee.

The cake cost will be shared by two people who make much more than I do...and that will be about $8 apiece ( a CostCo sheet cake is $15.99).

I pointed out that the coffee, itself, will cost me about $10, and the plates and forks (enough for 40-50) will set me back an additional $10 or so.

Well, I was told, the other two were sharing the cost of two bottles of champagne as personal gifts to the men leaving.

My response...."And?"

I was told my attitude was not appreciated.

I "later" remembered why the change of date seemed wrong to me --  I am taking Friday off, and I have plans I do not wish to change.  I brought this up.  I got an "And?" for a response.

I said, "AND...you'll have to make the coffee and set up the conference room all by yourself."

It now looks like the reception may be returned to Thursday afternoon.

Well DR RLP - the wacky Mercury retrograde will not end until Thursday, but tomorrow we should get some appreciation for the good things we do, and some better cooperation....what with the sextile of Neptune in Aquarius and Jupiter in Sagittarius forming a warm hearted sextile.

Beginning Thursday we should all be in MOVE AHEAD mode with those revamped plans and take action for success.  ;D

Some good wake-up news for Cillaliz:

If Callie was going to have an enema reaction, it would be over and done with:

PET EDUCATION (http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1937&articleid=2255)der Brucer

Thanks Der Brucer, I also had an email from a new veteranarian friend who told me that at this point any effects would be short term.

I decided to call the old vet and ask him about it.   I left a message just asking him to call and he did.  He was very nice.  He said that they haven't been giving dogs or cats phosphate ememas for a long time so the chart must be wrong.   Honestly, I believe him. I can't imagine that clinic making that mistake and I think it's his handwriting.   He's a cat doctor, so...

Anyway, he said the vet I'm planning to go to is very good.  He's been out of vet school about 25 years and his young associate is a fairly new grad so it's a good mix of experience and new info.

I was able to explain that it wasn't his treatment that made me leave but his staff.  He said he understood and that sometimes other vets have other ideas.   It was actually a really good conversation and we talked about Callie's problems. He was shocked to hear we had gone from one extreme to the other and thought it was a good sign that we could maybe get her regulated again.  I discussed what I'm doing and he wanted to know what the new vet had done and said he thought things sounded good.

I'm glad he called.

I'm so very pleased you had the conversations you wanted with him.

I also talked to the new vet today. Last night Callie was acting like her stomach was bothering her.  She also didn't want me to come near her and she was hiding. I decided she needed a break from all her meds to let her stomach settle down a bit.   So I didn't give her any last night or this morning.  I called and made an appointment for tomorrow with the new vet and he thought it would be fine to stop her meds until then.

When I went home for lunch she was almost playing, she was watching a neighbor cat out the window with much interest and finally noticed the bird feeder I hung over the weekend.  She let me pet her and she purred and purred.   Between the 2 conversations and my trip home for lunch I'm finally exhaling about that situation.

Of course my appointment is 8:15 AM about 10 miles from my house so I'll have to get up early, but that's cool. I'll make it to work in plenty of time for my first appointment.

Next I watched IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN, always one of my favorite Peanuts cartoons. It comes on ABC tomorrow night, but, of course, I had no intention of watching it with commercials every few minutes. Still looks very nice, I think the best of the specials on DVD currently. Once Warners starts remastering them and rereleasing them, who know which one will look better.

Next up was RATATOUILLE, a delightful, ingratiating Pixar cartoon.

The Pixar features are always so FULL of animation. I liked the animation very much in MEET THE ROBINSONS last week, but that nest of activity that always seems to be going on in Pixar movies was missing in MEET THE ROBINSONS. The heavy layer of wit was also missing.

The DVD, like all Pixar features, is reference quality video AND audio. They did the audio soundtrack in Solby 5.1 EX, so that rear center surround channel is as active as the left and right rear channels are.

There are two Pixar shorts on the DVD, and I also had time to watch one of them - "Lifted." Think CLOSE ENCOUNTERS meets Looney Tunes. Hilarious and over in 5 minutes. It also had a Dolby 5.1 EX channel, and BOY was it loud and with very active bass!

Back from lunch (chicken noodle soup and chicken Caesar salad) and a "walk" to Smart and Final (don't know if all of you know what that is or not....there is a Cash and Carry retail outlet for restaurant supplies and ts "home" shop called Smart and Final).

At any rate, the smallest pack of heavy duty 7-inch plates was 125 plates.  I also got two 25-cup-each packs of coffee cups (paper), two packages of 50-each forks and the smallest pack of dispenser napkins I could find.

Total cost: $25.49 (which is a good price for the quantities and quality I obtained).  I still have to get creamer, sugar, stirrers...and the coffee.

I pay: $35 - $40.

The others pay: $8 each.

Any clues as to who's getting screwed?

DR MBARNUM how as the Zombie movie?  Did you notice that it was produced by Ted Richmond, friend of Miss Allison, who also later produced FRANCIS JOINS THE WACS and COUNT THREE AND PRAY.

You mean SOUL OF A MONSTER? It was interesting and strange...a bit dull...and seemed a lot longer then 61 minutes. I did enjoy Rose Hobart and Jeanne Bates, but the male cast were nothing to write home about. It also was way too religious for my tastes...almost beating you over the head with Christianity, which just seemed out of place.

There were no zombies, just a guy who was brought back from the brink of death by a mysterious woman.

JRand, boy did I have a goony dream last night.  I was at the lakes and it was my birthday and I was waltzing in a dirt parking lot with Mick Jagger.  Then we went inside and sat down and had a beer with Bill Richardson and then a tornado went by.  My new bicycle was outside and I was concerned about it, but it just got wet so everything was ok.

But it's Sondheim who invites her to submerge deeper into herself. She sang one of the starkly unromantic love-letter songs from "Passion," which she interestingly called "Stephen's second-best piece after 'Sweeney Todd.' " And she captured the complicated truth of "No One Is Alone" from "Into the Woods," with its haunting lines, "You decide what's good / You decide alone. / But, no one is alone," epitomizing the composer's intricate genius.

I also enjoy hearing about the fundraiser and I enjoyed hearing about "The Brain ... X" details. But we've had lurkers who read the details and we don't know who they are. I fear they are not nice people.

I wondered about that, too; especially when the silent Dot attacked BK on a subject that she supposedly knows nothing about.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up...  And since I slept in this morning, I still have yet to go to the gym.  However, that will occur shortly.  I knew I was going to sleep in, but I when I looked at the clock and saw that it said "10:30", well... I was thinking it was no later then 9:15, 9:20, so... I guess I needed the sleep.  And sleep is good.

I know what you mean, Jose.  I didn't get up this morning until 3:45.  The cats were not happy.

Yes, I enjoy reading all about the Fund Raiser and other projects that MR BK and other DR's are involved with.  Makes me feel in the know and part of "show business."

But there are those pesky lurkers searching for who knows what.....

I know that certain things at this website (i.e. member's avatars) can't be seen by anyone, but other members. Granted it doesn't take a lot to become a member, but does leave somewhat of a trail that certain people may not wish to leave.  Waht I was wondering is if there is away to mark certain posts, so that they can be read only by other members of HHW?  Does anybody know such things?  There must be a way.   I would hate to think that anyone could take something said in the privacy of BK's living room, and use it against him or someone else

DR CILLA LIZ you have the inner impression that you are living life at such a fast pace that you might miss something.  The times you take to enjoy your life are not wasted moments, but moments to treasure.  You are also great at stepping outside your life and setting priorities.  You also realize that you are reaching some lifelong goals.

So... From the "When It Rains It Pours" department...

I got a call from Disney asking if I would be available to play some auditions this weekend.  In FLORIDA!!!  Alas, since I'm already booked to play some rehearsals for White Christmas this week, I wasn't able to take the gig - nor the four days and three nights staying on campus at Disneyworld.  Ah, well...

However, I did volunteer to be flown down next week for a few days on their dime.  ;)

What was the general feeling of people who saw the film 300?  I really had no interest in seeing the film until I saw the cover of the DVD.

I would say that unless you're a big fan of this kind of movie making (mostly CGI), illustrated graphic novels in general or any of the actors, you probably don't need to bother...unless you're going to see it on the big screen.  Like td, I also didn't feel that it was homophobic, but I just didn't think that the story (as it was presented) was interesting or historically accurate enough.  Just my 2¢.

There is a line or two about boy lovers and it was used as an insult.  I found THIS (http://www.unsoughtinput.com/index.php/2007/03/14/300-homophobic-propaganda-for-bushs-upcoming-invasion-of-iran/) article that, in part, says:

The charges of homophobia are largely based on two things - the “boy lovers” crack about Athens and the notion that Xerxes was portrayed as gay. Many have pointed out that the Spartans most likely had just as much pederasty as the rest of Greece at the time, so the joke didn’t even make sense to anyone with a little historical context.

DR Cillaliz, who did you like tonight on DANCING WITH THE STARS?

SPOILERS

I loved the group number.

My favorites are still helio and julianne. Although i thought it was slightly ridiculous that all the judges proclaimed him "back". I thought he was just as good last week.

I thought mel and max were good. But i'm really disappointed in her after samantha said they only rehearsed 6 hours this week.  They did well. And they lucked out. BUt to me, that is not enough effort. It just gave me a really bad feeling about her (although i did think they danced well).

I also thought jane seymour danced pretty well (for what she can do).  And again i found it slightly ridiculous that the judges got mad at her.  They love her slow graceful dances and they have been giving her way too high marks for those.  Yes they do suit her better. But i thought she put a lot more work and steps into the jive tonight.

I also thought jennie did well. Should be interesting to see who goes. I was disappointed in sabrina this week. Although she had a really busy schedule. And at least she tried to fit in as much training as she could.

I would put marie and jane in the B2. But i wonder how many fans sabrina had. Cause she could be in trouble if she doesn't have many.

I may be in the minority, but, I found 300 to be a fascinating film, from a technical standpoint alone it's worth seeing at least once. I also didn't find it to be severely homophobic as some others did.  300 doesn't try to be anything other than a graphic novel brought to the screen.

Exactly my thought. As a graphic novel put on screen, I thought it was fantastic. I also found parts of it enormously moving and the effects work was sometimes quite remarkable (I didn't think the CGI animals were great).

My only real complaint was that the battle stuff went on too long for my tastes. The first battles where the army acts as one were stirring. Later, when things get desperate and it's every man for himself, then it became repetitive, and I got antsy watching it.

And, on a purely personal note, there was quite a bit of eye candy there that I wouldn't have wanted to miss.

I began my evening by watching the remainder of the bonus features on the RATATOUILLE DVD. The other cartoon shot YOUR FRIEND THE RAT was entertaining, but it was done very much like a segment of the old WONDERFUL WORLD OF COLOR show.

The three deleted scenes were basically sketches and mock-ups, so they only got that far in the process (though the voices for the scenes were already done). And then there was a featurette where Brad Bird (director of the movie) and chef/cooking advisor Thomas Keller talked about how they run their various workplaces.

So, the two shorts were really the only features of real added value.

(Lest it sound unseemly, we had known each other for years and knew that one day we would end up together...just not when it miught happen.)

I agree on the bottom 2.  I loved Mel and Max - I thought it was amazing they could do that in 6 hours.  It isn't that she doesn't want to work more, it's schedules, I think Jennie has improved the most and I liked Sabrina.  I do like Helio and Julianne, but I'm not sure they are still my favorites. I think this is going to be really close in the end

I watched Kubrick's THE SHINING on dvd tonight.
I'm still kinda speechless, but, I'll give it a go.
I completely darkened my room, turned the ringer off on the phone and settled onto my couch.  I didn't budge for the following 143 minutes, except to cower and wince.
I have a history with Kubrick's THE SHINING.  I saw it on its opening night here in Pittsburgh with a close friend, at the Fulton (now Byham) Theater.  I drifted in and out of the film, nearly falling asleep several times.  I was bored and unimpressed, as was my friend.  I had read Stephen King's book and enjoyed it very much, still I knew that that particular novel could work as a film - hadn't Wise's THE HAUNTING shown one woman's descent into madness via a haunted house? - so I did have high expectations for Kubrick's film and was supremely let down by his achievement.
I tried to see THE SHINING again at several repertory house screenings over the years, but it still left me cold and detached and unimpressed.
I let those sentiments stick around for a long, long time.  I never owned a copy of Kubrick's THE SHINING on any video format (nor do I own a copy of King's book), never watched a television showing of THE SHINING (including King's own adaptation for ABC and really had no desire to revisit Kubrick's vision of The Overlook UNTIL this past week's new video transfers of major Kubrick works.  I even debated which one to purchase first, holding CLOCKWORK ORANGE, EYES WIDE SHUT and 2001 in my hands along with THE SHINING.  I opted for the latter, if only because of Vivien Kubrick's "Making of THE SHINING" amongst the special features - and THAT was a fascinating feature I viewed Sunday night.
I can't remember the last time that I've had such a turnaround of feeling on a film.  I was enthralled from start to finish tonight, impressed (not bored out of my head) by the amazing Steadicam work and blown away by the dvd's transfer.  My opinion hasn't changed on the work done by Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd or Scatman Crothers - I appreciated their performances before - but my opinion on Jack Nicholson's performance has changed, I saw his modulation, in his characterization, I saw a selfish man, who put himself first in all things and who got what was coming to him.  The final half-hour brings the supernatural elements to all of the characters, and that final shot is a doozy.
If it weren't such an ungodly length, I'd probably have spun that dvd again right now. . .
