We watched the American Masters program on Carol Burnett last night.  She is such a delight.  WHY oh why can't they release a box set of her complete television series? Or the two incarnations [one in b&w, one in color] of her Once Upon a Mattress?  Or her several appearances jointly with Julie Andrews?  The clips are so tantalizing...    :-\

Good morning, all.  As the Monday trip nears, I'm getting more fraught about how the hell I'm paying the $30,000 taxes next week: the sale of the property isn't moving, we can't sell my dad's motor home, the Macbeths are showing signs of renegging on their promise to repay my dad's loan.  Randy and JoAnn are also concerned about all of this, and I keep dumping requests for help on them since the Macbeths have done crap to help with any of this.  Randy and Jo, with their we-have-to-knuckle-down-and-get-it-done attitude have my undying affection but I can't keep puttng my neuroses and pressure on them.  I'm also looking forward to seeing the Macbeths about as much as I look forward to a root canal.  There's a gnawing belief that they're being difficult because they're so looking forward to see me fall on my sword to prove I should have turned the executorship over to them, I mean him.  God, I hate that Macbeth bitch my sister-in-law!

A long day today: Toyland first, then the NYPL.  I may stop at a local bank and pull a robbery as well if there's time.

I saw The Glorious Ones last night.

It was wonderful. It's a love letter to comedy and musicals. It opened to mixed reviews but I had a great time. It's based on a 1974 novel by Francine Prose.

The Glorious Ones (http://www.harpercollins.com/books/9780061493843/The_Glorious_Ones/index.aspx)

Mark Kudish is excellent and the woman who played the "Gary Coleman" role in Avenue Q i(Natalie Venetia Belcon) s his co-star.

The show is sweet and funny and presents a part of theatre history most people know nothing about. I had a lovely time.

Tonight I undertake the Tom Stoppard Marathon. 3 hours of Rock and Roll, his newest play which is about the Czechoslovakia revolution in 1968 (called the "Velvet Revolution). I've heard that it's wordy and long and you must pay attention or you will get lost. I'm sitting in the last row of the balcony but it's a TDF ticket so I don't care.

More on that tomorrow.

DR elmore3003 - surely there are provisions for filing for an extension in situations like this?

My theory is, sign the forms and send them in without the check.  They'll let ypou know you forgot to mail it, and perhaps the bit of time will loosen up some cash.  I also suppose it's possible for the three of us to take a loan on the property as well.  The truth is, I want to pay the estate taxes off and never have to deal or see the Macbeths again.

Part of my anxiety now is the fact that my dad's attorney is a good man but he should have had all the tax information to us when I requested it a month ago.  I know that part of the delay is how the Macbeth's loan fits nto the situation, I waffled about some sibling responsibilty, and I have bent over backwards twice now to accommodate them. I can bend no more. What I should do is just sue the Macbeths for the full amount of the loan and pay the taxes with that, but I fear we'll be in court for much longer than I want this estate to drag on.

And now i'm outa here.

Larry,
so sorry to hear  of your angst. I've found that most people can be bribed--and often for very small amounts. You might want to sweeten the deal on the Macbeth's loan in return for quick settlement. I personally have mixed feelings about people getting away with paying less than they ought, but it can be an effective strategy.

Hugs in any case.

Even more TOD - when I taught in the Teacher Ed department at Miami University, I used one of the best educational films I'd ever seen:

The Mind's Treasure Chest.  VHS, 92 min. (two parts 48 min. and 44 min.), color, 1991.  Developed by Learn Television.  Writer/director Harry Nathan Gottlieb.  Support provided by Follett Software Company, Encyclopaedia Britannica Educational Corporation, Apple Computer, Computype, Epson America, Leaf, Mohawk Midland Manufacturing, 3M, and UMI....This program shows how a high school senior running for student council is able to win the election against a tough opponent using the marvelous electronic resources of the library.   Its goal is to not only excite students about using libraries, but also to stimulate a change in attitude towards learning and education.  Targeted to secondary schools, but also recommended for college freshman and adult library patrons.

I saw this well over 100 times and never tired of it.  It's very clever and fun, but was becoming out-dated as information-seeking technologies were migrating to the Web.  Still, I wish I had a copy.

Here is a plot synopsis along with songs as they appear in the show. It should answer your questions.

I really like the CD. It's got some good numbers in there. Like many Jones & Schmidt shows, it was not particularly successful but it has had a long life in college and other theatre circuits.

TOPIC OF THE DAY
There was this episode on, I think, Streets of San Francisco with David Opatashu as a teacher who barricades several students in a school room handcuffing them to their desks. He keeps them there to LEARN!

(Like the Twilight Zone episode with Burgess Meredith, this show has always stayed with me.)

MANY THANKS TO ... JRand57 and VinTek ... for your suggestions on where to sell my vinyl records!

NBC's "Life" is one of the "few" TV highlights of each week for me.

Damian Lewis' character (Charlie Crews) is one of the few truly refreshing characters on the small screen, IMO.

Last night's episode, as I see it (about all the episodes, thus far) wasn't about plotting (are there ANY original plots any more?) but about character development of all the principals.

DR MattH:  I can't see any possibility for a three-way between Charlie, Adam Arkin's character and Olivia, the attorney.  Charlie has evidenced no romantic/sexual attractions for her, which is primarily why she considered moving to NYC for a while.  Anything between them, so far as Charlie is concerned, is client/attorney-friend.  That episode where he told her she should not represent a client was not his way of being "possessive" about her, IMO, but about his reading of the character of the man who was trying to get a good deal like the one she got for Charlie.

I think she and Arkin played extremely well off one another in last night's episode...and I look forward to seeing that relationship development.

The actress who portrayed Mary Ann Farmer in last night's episode was  truly lovely, and an exceptional actress, IMO.

I have been manically getting songs recorded for "Cinderella."  The director has had some excellent ideas (i.e., we're splitting the Gavotte into three disparate styles--Bossa Nova, Mambo and Swing), but, oy, does it sure take a lot of time to first sequence, then record, then edit WAV files.  I must say I have become an extremely facile WAV editor--I can do edits that are virtually impossible to hear, if I do say so myself.  :)

Hello, all.  I'm so distracted that I left everything for the NYPL on my desk when I left the office.  Since I didn't want to break down and cry in the Music Division, I came home to do it.

I did bite the bullet and sent an email to the attorney and my two brothers asking them to go to the bank before Tuesday Nov 13 and apply for a loan on the property to settle the taxes.  I also called Randy this morning and apologized for all the crap I keep dumping on him and Jo Ann. I am so grateful for them.

DR Jeanne, I wouldn't give the Macbeths a break at the moment for anything; they've been total shits and I will rot in hell before I give them a single iota of victory.

And on that, my thoughts on the TOD:
The Hildegarde Withers mysteries with Edna Mae Oliver
The Little Rascals' Miss Crabtree
A Christmas Story (I love Ralphie's teacher)
Good Morning, Miss dove
The Corn Is Green
Porky's

I definitely feel for you, and you have my best wishes.   You're a strong man with a strong determination.  Karma is on your side.

Indeed; I've been hoping for a reissue of that CD for quite some time (since I saw "The Show Goes On," Schmidt & Jones's wonderful revue, which featured a couple of songs from that score).

Looking around, though, I found an outfit (http://arkivmusic.com) that claims to be authorized to produce CD-R reissues of out-of-print CDs, including Celebration.  (http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=171626) Anybody familiar with these folks? Or the two incarnations [one in b&w, one in color] of her Once Upon a Mattress?  Or her several appearances jointly with Julie Andrews?  The clips are so tantalizing...    :-\

Well, in my car they sounded just fine, but I'm no audiophile!  I didn't detect any audible difference between these and regular CD issues.

Good news for my iPod; bad news for my bank account... I'm seeing a bunch of things in their catalog that I'm liable to start picking up.

Happily, I have all those oop CDs.

OK, a mini-rant.  Does this make any sense?

The color laser printer, which serves about 50 people in the immediate vicinity, has just run out of toner.  Purchasing will not allow us to keep a spare, or to order a cartridge until the current one runs out.  So now we will all be without the use of this printer until Monday or Tuesday next week, when a cartridge can be obtained through the normal procurement chanels.

I mean, honestly!   :P

So, DR Singdaw, when did you start working here?  Sounds like the kind of stuff that goes on in my workplace.

Reading the notes and the mention of Popeye's reminds me of something funny.

Very close to where i live, there is a new restaurant that opened. Well a couple of weeks ago i noticed that part of it was now "Popeye's".I was all excited and i mentioned it to someone. Well imagine my surprise when they told me that underneath the word in small writing it said supplements. :(

I didn't know that you could use the same name but not be the same thing. There are no Popeye's in Canada (or at least not here) which is why i was mildly excited.  It would have been funny if i went there to eat and found out they sold pills instead.

does the printer give u a warning the ink is about to run out?  ours does.  if so maybe u can get them to compromise & place the order then.  the cartridges are pricey so i can understand not wanting to stockpile them,  but not having a backup when it takes that long to replace ::)

Chicago OCR - the original Bay Cities release.
The List Of Adrian Messenger - Jerry Goldsmith - a very rare score - this is not legit (CDR) but has very good sound.
Elmer Gantry - Andre Previn - great score - oop on Ryko
Promises, Promises OCR the oop Ryko version
Me And My Shadows Life With Judy Garland - promo release of William Ross soundtrack - never officially released.

I was wondering if there was an interview with the first team voted out of THE AMAZING RACE.

It would be on this page at TARsucks.

I tried to scan it briefly. But i try not to look at this page without covering the middle (i know that sounds dumb). But we are behind on a few reality shows in canada. And i don't want to see the winners.

If anyone notices the TAR interview, can they post the link here. Thanks.

Then I started on the Blu-ray of RATATOUILLE. As excellent as the SD-DVD looked, the Blu-ray leaves it FAR behind. Such depth and detail is staggering to behold (light shimmering on and slightly reflecting off of Remy's whiskers, just amazing detail.)

I'm using the new Blu-ray feature of in-movie experience (which HD-DVD has had from the start), and thus it's making the movie VERY long - 2 hours already with all the segues into bonus featurettes and side excursions, and I still have almost an hour of the movie to go). Still, it's a leap up in quality from the A quality of the SD-DVD.

I just got back from an audition for a game show called "Don't Forget the Lyrics" which my friend the casting director called me in for. I know all the lyrics to all the more popular operas, and a good many unpopular ones... lotsa songs from the '20's through the '60's... almost none of the top forty stuff from any era... so I failed the written test. Because of the writers' strike, the show has been picked up for 13 episodes, with another 13 about to green light - they are looking for LA-area folks who know the lyrics to lotsa popular songs... the top prize is a million bucks, and they're looking for someone to go all the way!!  PLEASE try out!!!

Good Afternoon!

Well, we had a good morning of auditions.  Basically all of the men who came in to sing for us this morning were well-prepared, and sang well too.  The turnout today was a bit smaller than yesterday's turnout (the women), so we went ahead and heard 16 bars from each person today.  -And I really don't recall anyone breaching that "rule" - in fact, there were some people who wanted to sing less than 16 bars!

Because this was an audition for an upcoming production of American in Paris, we asked for Gershwin, Porter, etc., to be sung - The Classic American SongBook.  And with a few exceptions, that's what we heard - and what I played today.  And I have to say, it's amazing how fast the day goes by when you're playing and listening to such glorious music.

*Best of all...  By the time we cut the call off, we had just over 100 men signed up, and we were done around 12:30!  :)

Okay, I have four signed posters from our event - we only printed twenty, and of those only ten were signed.  The money goes to LACCTAA.  I can offer these for $50, which is what they were going to be sold for at the event, but they never got put out.

They are signed by the entire cast plus Cindy Williams.  First come, first served.  Payment by paypal to the kritzerland@adelphia.net address.

I just found out that we won't be able to interview Jo Stafford in LA in December. Her son says she's "under the weather" (she turns 90 on monday) and promises to let us know if she feels like she's up to it. Somehow I think that day may never come, but I hope I'm wrong.

We will still interview Johnny Mercer's daughter, Mandy, but I was really hoping to meet Jo Stafford.

DR JRand - You should go ahead and buy "Sitcoms" - then just tear out the "Will & Grace" pages.  Frank Vlastnik showed me some of the stills and other pictures he and Ken Bloom "scoured" for over the past two years.  There's some amazing stuff, and a lot of it has never been seen anywhere else before.  -And, yes, there are even some "new" pics from "I Love Lucy" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show".  ;)

After grabbing some lunch from this year's Vendy Awards (http://streetvendor.org/vendies.html) winner, Kwik Meal, I headed down to Bryant Park to grab a table to eat my lunch.  -Chicken over Rice with Salad.

Well, it turned out there was a special performance by the Ice Theatre of New York (http://icetheatre.org/) going on at/on The Pond - the ice-skating rink set up on the lawn of Bryant Park.  So, I had some nice entertainment while I was enjoying my meal.

Then for dessert, I headed over to 'wichcraft's hot chocolate booth where I purchased - then thoroughly enjoyed a Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate.  YUM!  :)

Then since I still found myself with an unexpectedly free afternoon, I trekked over to Grand Central just to stare the ceiling for a while, and then I walked up and over to MoMA.

When I had joined a few weeks ago, I only checked out the new Seurat exhibit since it was the special Member's Preview Days.  Today, I checked out the other special exhibit up on the sixth floor - a selection of sculptures by Martin Puryear.  Then I headed on down the Fifth Floor to check out more the paintings.

Well... I had been observing, looking, analyzing, marveling, etc., for about an hour, when I realized that I just couldn't take in anymore.  There really is just so much Art there.  -Plus, my feet and back were a bit tired from standing.  So, I made a mental note of what I did not get to on the fifth floor, and that's where I'll start the next time I visit the museum.  -And then each subsequent visit I'll just check out another floor - or half floor - each time.

*Oh, but I did check out a small gallery on the second floor that featured three works that use the printed word - or the projected word - as Art.  Quite interesting, and very thought provoking.  The one installation that is simply made of two slide projectors projectors different but related/words juxtaposed over one another was quite effective.  If you walked in front of one of the projectors - thus blocking the other one - you saw one word, then as you continued walking and blocked the other one, you saw another word.  And the choice of words was quite, well, interesting (for lack of a better work), and, in some of the pairings, a bit graphic.

I did find the Martin Puryear exhibit quite fascinating.  However, some of the pieces intrigued me due to their construction and engineering.  -Which, in turn made had me pondering when "ingenuity" becomes "art".  In any case...  MoMa has an online version of the exhibition, and if you're interested, just click below for the tour.

I bought a used copy of this book earlier this year because I came across a video clip of Patti LuPone singing the song, "I Was Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOf-DWwVQYQ)" on Youtube.com.  I fell in love with the song...which was a good thing, because I had that darned song stuck in my head for a week and a half!!  I also found out that the song was published in the The Ahrens & Flaherty Songbook (http://www.amazon.com/Ahrens-Flaherty-Songbook-Piano-chords/dp/0757900925/ref=sr_1_1/104-0461854-0899927?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1194558764&sr=8-1), which was published in 2001!

Anyway, getting back to the original novel...when I bought it earlier this year, it was practically out of print!  I had to buy a (very gently) used copy.  Good thing that the musical brought the novel back into print. :)

It's about time for me to head down to O'Neill's for dinner and then see VANESSA at City Opera.  I've never liked the opera much, but perhaps seeing it will be more entertaining than listening to it.

I'm seeing it with my dear friend Bruce Pomahac of Rodgers & Hammerstein, and I believe he has dih on the Fat Conductor of Limited Talent and Limitless Ego to relay.  FCOLTALE was last spotted at the Library of Cngress.  I suspect he was looking at the Constitution to learn what constitutional rights of others he's violated lately in his pathetic existence.

More words to drive Elmore crazy by department:  just finished the arrangement of "In My Own Little Corner," which Larry will be happy to hear follows the original orchestration exactly, at least to measure 75 where it breaks into unbridled swing until measure 114.  I did a jazz English Horn solo over the swing part that mimics the flute line, sort of.  And when the strings come back in at 114 it's luscious enough to make Richard Rodgers drop his martini and stop yelling at Mary.  ;)

I saw a thing about this exhibit on some show or the other earlier this week. It looked interesting

I won't find out until I get home after working concessions for Warren Miller's (http://www.warrenmiller.com/) Playground (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/season/season_detail.asp?event_id=953).  It should be quite exciting...the movie and working the concessions!

Found this on another message board about the soaps and the writers strike

I found the article rather curious.

Quote:
November 8, 2007
By JACQUES STEINBERG

While the sidelining of “The Colbert Report” until further notice is one of the more prominent repercussions of the film and television writers’ strike, there are other uncertainties: Will that passionate kiss shared this week by Marina and Cyrus after Cyrus nearly died signal a permanent reconciliation?

Those characters appear on the CBS soap opera “The Guiding Light.” And like their fictional brethren on “All My Children” on ABC and “Days of Our Lives” on NBC, those characters’ futures — or at least who will be responsible for scripting their futures — could soon become as unsure as the prospects of Ric surviving this week’s surgery on “General Hospital.”

Unlike late-night television shows or sitcoms, networks almost never show reruns of soap operas. They prefer instead to keep the interwoven narratives churning forward over the course of five new episodes a week, 52 weeks a year. For the immediate future viewers addicted to those shows can breathe easy: The producers of most of the shows possess finished or nearly finished scripts for episodes scheduled to be broadcast through January or even beyond.

But because the episodes of daytime dramas are mapped out so far in advance, the networks will soon have to confront the question of whether to entrust the intricacies of their forthcoming plots to the unseasoned pens of executives and producers, or writers who are not part of the union. That is what happened in 1988, when a strike by the same union, the Writers Guild of America, dragged on for more than five months.

“They won’t go dark,” predicted Stephen Demorest, 58, a writer for “All My Children” whose previous credits include “General Hospital” and “As the World Turns.” “They won’t put on game shows. They won’t do reruns.”

The networks themselves have said little more than that their daytime serials will go on, while refusing to discuss any contingency plans.

On its face, the labor dispute between writers and their employers — centered largely on potential royalties from DVDs and online ventures — would seem to have little bearing on soap-opera writers, whose wares are as perishable as a printed copy of a daily newspaper.

But as with so many of the traditional media, daytime dramas have already begun to migrate, however tentatively, to the Web. NBC, which had three soap operas on broadcast television as recently as 1999 — “Days of Our Lives,” “Passions” and “Another World” — now has only one, “Days.” (“Passions” lives on only on DirecTV, a satellite channel.)

NBC’s newest soap, “Coastal Dreams,” can be seen only online, at nbc.com. And its principal writer is not, as yet, covered by the guild contract, said David Rupel, a guild strike captain who is a writer for “The Guiding Light.”

“I think the strike is very relevant to us,” said Mr. Rupel, 44, who previously wrote for “General Hospital.” “‘Guiding Light,’ we celebrated our 75th anniversary this year, which is great. But the soap market is dwindling on TV. In five years, three years or even two, we could be on the Internet.”

Courtney Simon, a veteran writer for “As the World Turns,” noted that her series and “The Young and the Restless,” another CBS drama, had recently mounted a limited, online run of an amalgam of both shows called “L.A. Diaries.”

“I think it’s the wave of the future,” she said. “And it’s going to hit home very soon.”

But in expressing his solidarity with striking writers from other genres, Mr. Demorest, who has been writing for daytime dramas for more than two decades, gave a more basic reason: “We benefit from the same benefits, pensions and health plans.”

With no break for repeats or hiatuses, Mr. Demorest said he tended to think of himself and his fellow soap scribes as “the blue-collar part of the business. We work 52 weeks a year and get a check every week.”

The minimum salary for such work might run from as little as $1,600 a week (for a minimum of 13 weeks) for a script editor, to as much as $20,000 a week for a veteran head writer.

Typically such series are written by teams of experienced writers — it is not unusual for a soap writer to stay in the business 15 years or more — who bring vast institutional knowledge, such as it is, to pertinent questions like whether one character has already slept with another or is distantly related to a third.

Most shows are as well oiled behind the scenes as a General Motors assembly line. In a typical model the head writer roughs out the synopsis of a week’s worth of episodes, then gives those plots to another set of writers to outline individual scenes in more detail. Each episode is then divvied up among another team of writers, to supply the dialogue, before an editor provides a final gloss.

Ms. Simon of “As the World Turns” said there were probably some soap producers out there who have always wondered what it would be like to write an episode. While they may soon get the chance, she warned that it is not as easy as it must look.

“It really requires a relentless pace,” she said.

Alain Delaquérière contributed reporting.

I finished all of the bonus features on the RATATOUILLE Blu-ray disc. There is WAY more special material on it than on the standard definition disc. That and the huge increase in picture quality (sound was only a half step better) I guess is what justifies the $5 difference in retail price.

Good Evening!

I'm back from seeing Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  It turned out the comp tickets from the producer's office were on the far left and far right sections of the audience... in the first three rows.  They were actually labeled as "Partial View".  But, still, it was a free ticket, and except for a few things upstage, I got to see most of the show.

Patrick Page as The Grinch is quite wonderful, and it seems they've given him a bit more latitude this year with his part - there were some obvious and very funny ad libs tonight.  The kids are cute, the songs are passable - although still a bit "modern" sounding for a "kid's show".  And it still runs 90 minutes with no intermission - which is still about 30-40 minutes too long.
Title: Re:THE NETHER REGIONS

I watched SMALLVILLE off the DVR at 10 (again would have watched L&O: CI if GREY'S ANATOMY hadn't spilled almost 7 minutes over the hour.)

Sorry but I find the actress playing Lana so unappealing and unsexy that all the efforts to turn her into a femme fatale seem ludicrous to me.

Again, there is A LOT of kryptonite in the vicinity of Smallville. It's gotten to be such a tired device for the writers to fall back on almost every week.
Title: Re:THE NETHER REGIONS
Post by: JoseSPiano on November 08, 2007, 08:13:47 PM
DR JoseSPiano - I am just curious:  Do you prefer that someone auditioning give you an approximate tempo when they're handing you their music, or you prefer to just use your judgement and then adjust, if necessary,  once they start singing?

I always ask for a tempo - even when they say they take it in the "regular" or "standard" tempo.  There are times when I don't get the chance to ask about their tempo since they end up walking away before I get a chance to ask them.  However, if I feel that it is necessary, I will recall them to the piano.  Alas, there are still those time when I ask for the tempo, and they give me the tempo... and when they start singing, they're in another tempo.

One "funny" thing about The Grinch which I don't seem to recall from last year...  There are two teams of kids - since they have 10-14 shows a week.  The teams are color-coded.  There are the "Red Kids" - who weren't on tonight.  Instead, according to the cast roster posted in the lobby, The Kids of Whoville were played by: "The White Kids".

And when the strings come back in at 114 it's luscious enough to make Richard Rodgers drop his martini and stop yelling at Mary.  ;)

My only riposte is that when your production signed a contract with R&H to do the show, it probably has a clause about major changes, and if I were Richard Rodgers and someone did that to me without my authorization, I wouldn't be too happy either.

I still think VANESSA is a load of crap: pseudo-Chekhov libretto with foolish pretensions - 20 year-old man knocks up niece, and then marries her aunt, Vanessa, who 20 years before had an affair with his father, and the old lady who's pushing 90 refuses to speak to anyone, probably wondering why everyone keeps telling telling the 40-ish Vanessa how young and beautiful she is.  A couple of beautiful arias, a lovely quintet and a big waste of time.  There's a miscarriage, too.

The dinner at O'Neal's was fantastic. Great chicken pot pie and blueberry shortcake to die for.

Those of us in the military electronics business used to out-fox the logistics prople by designing storage areas for "ready spares" as part of the basic equipment. I remember a radar system where Unit 112 was nothing more than a spare parts cabinet (hard wired, of course, to the main system (it had a light inside!).

A $104 million dollar hockey arena may be forced to remove hundreds of images of "The Fighting Sioux," the logo and nickname of the University of North Dakota for more than 70 years, if officials can't reach an agreement with tribal councils.

The university, according to a settlement last month of a lawsuit against the National Collegiate Athletic Association, has three years to negotiate an agreement with two North Dakota Sioux tribes — Spirit Lake and Standing Rock — to receive approval for the continued use of the "Sioux" name and logo.

If an agreement is not reached by 2011, the university will be forced to find a new name and logo. The hockey arena has hundreds of "Fighting Sioux" logos laid into its granite flooring, imprinted on seating and etched on doors and other areas. If an agreement cannot be reached, they would all have to be replaced.

The organization (NCAA) said it "believes that the time has come to retire Native American imagery in college sports."

Methinks the time has come to rid the world of the NCAA whackos.
