Writers, studios to resume talks
Offering hope of an end to the walkout, the two sides announce that they'll return to negotiations Nov. 26.

By Richard Verrier and Meg James, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
November 17, 2007

Hollywood's film and TV writers and its major studios have agreed to return to the bargaining table, offering the first glimmer of hope that a deal to end a costly two-week strike could be within reach.

The Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers said late Friday that they would resume talks Nov. 26 on a new contract for 10,500 writers to replace the one that expired Oct. 31. The two sides announced the plan in identical statements, a rare show of unity.

Hey, no rush. We'll all just fritter away the eight days we have already agreed we could be talking!

I liked last night's show. but to me it almost feels like there are 2 distinct set of writers. I found last night's mystery much darker than than past 2 weeks.  To me it feels like one set of writers are writing last night and about her brother.  And some other people are writing the fantastic two episodes we had last week and the week before.

I liked last night's show. But i loved loved the past 2 weeks (which more like Ghost Whisperer of old).

RE: last night's show, i just thought maybe they went too far.  I mean having the ghosts inhabit the father/daughter just seemed completely unbelievable to me.

And while the ghosts are often mean, these were the absolute most brutal ghosts i've seen! Did not like them! (the ghosts are usually very sympathetic).

Good Morning!

I was a late becoming a Beatles fan; I was listening to Peter Paul and Mary and found all the Beatles hubub annoying. (I was in 3rd grade when they were on Ed Sullivan.) By 6th grade, I was a big fan of the Monkees, and then finally came around to the Beatles around the time of Sgt. Pepper and was a fan from then on. I also explored their back catalogue, which I'd dismissed earlier. Even as a child I seemed to shun whatever happend to be the most popular and sought out whatever was interesting and esoteric. Later I realized that there was music that could be popular AND good!

TOD:
Beatles:
Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite
Drive My Car
Good Day Sunshine
All You Need Is Love
Twist and Shout
Back in the U.S.S.R.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Covers:
Joe Cocker: With A little Help From My Friends
Ed Gerhard: I Will
Nilsson: Mother Nature's Son
Nilsson: You Can't Do That (not really a cover, more of a medley)
Honorary Mention-DJ BC and the Beastles: Whatcha Want, Lady? (Beastie Boys & Beatles mash-up)
Any Glenn Tilbrook Beatles cover, (although I don't think there have ever been any "official" releases.)

When I was in 6th grade, we had a Beatles single (can't remember which one, but probably something from Sgt. Pepper's.) We played this single at least a dozen times and would always go on to play another single. One day we weren't near the record player when it finished and it eventually got to a weird hidden track. I can't really describe the feeling we had when we heard it---in the language of the times, it "freaked us out"! It was the combination of the strangeness of the music, wich was unlike anything we'd ever heard, and the fact that we had already played this record so many time without hearing this. It was one of those moments my brother and I have never forgotten.

RE: last night's show, i just thought maybe they went too far.  I mean having the ghosts inhabit the father/daughter just seemed completely unbelievable to me.

The last 5 episodes were all writen by different writers.

The ghosts did not inhabit the father/daughter, they "overlayed" (I think that was the phrase) them - meaning they appeared different to outside observers.

Why is that supernatural manifestation more unbelievable than the other goings on?

Unlikely - Sgt Pepper had no singles released at the time (11 years later a single of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"/"With a Little Help from My Friends"/"A Day in the Life" was released to coincide with the movie).

It's a right wing conspiracy, I tell ya!  (der Brucer have you been messing with my HHW password?). I've been trying to log on the last two days and it keeps saying my password is incorrect (the very one I've been using for the past 11 months, thank you very much). I then tried getting the site to send it to me "since I've forgotten" but it said I didn't set up my profile with my "secret" question, so it sent a new password (which didn't work), so I tried again, got a new another new one -- which I hate -- it's this strange combo of like 10 letters and numbers (too friggin' long to type in each time...) I want my old password back -- am I going to have to set start over again by setting up a new account?  Might be kind'a fun to start over with a whole new HHW identity...

I'm also confused by the idea of agreeing to negotiate several days from that point, rather than getting to the negotiating table immediately.  I think something similar happened with the stagehand strike - didn't they decide on Wednesday that they would resume talks on Saturday (today)?  Why not get to the table right away, or at least the next day?  There must be some strategic reason for this.

The thing I like about GHOST WHISPERER is the way the writers change up the tone of the episodes. Some ghosts have been miserable, sad, lost. But others (I remember a baseball player from last season) are highly belligerent and thus the show takes on a much more grisly and hostile tone.

I'm sure the actoirs prefer it that way, too, as they aren't forced into repeating the same emotions week after week.

I did NOT like Camryn Mannheim's rather unnecessary chiding of Melinda and her visions. I was glad the writers gave her a comeback to her later in the episode. (Actually, I wouldn't mind at all if Camryn got written off the show. Other than holding down the fort when Melinda's off on an adventure, I don't think she brings much to the program.)

Before I watch TORCHWOOD, I'll be watching BAD SANTA on Blu-ray this evening. I've never seen the movie (it came out a couple of years ago), so it will be a new experience.

The Blu-ray offers two different versions: the unrated version runs 98 minutes and the director's cut runs 88 minutes. (Shades of Blake Edwards' DARLING LILI having a shorter running time in the director's cut.)

And I'll have to watch the extras, too, which are present. I probably won't get it all watched tonight.

As der Brucer noted, there were no singles released from the Sgt. Pepper album.  Sure, individual tracks were played on the radio, but that was up to the stations.

HOWEVER... There was indeed a hidden track at the end of the Sgt. Pepper album.  It's commemorated on the CD as an additional track... I'm pretty sure it's hidden, as well.

My mother didn't allow any Beatles music in the house.  She loathed rock.  She even thought Petula Clark was despicable.

(The net result was that my sister listened to folk music, which was politically more left wing than rock ever was, and I listened to show music... and we all know what that led to!)

As a result, I never really got on the Beatles bandwagon.  I could hear it on the radio, but it never became a major part of my life.

Hello, everyone!

Ah, the Beatles. They were all the rage when I was in high school, but they left me cold. I loved Broadway show tunes. My friend Lulu  LOVED them and was VERY vocal about it.

I had a boyfriend in college who looked quite a bit like Paul McCartney. I didn't pick up on it at first. It wasn't until I introduced him to some of my girlfriends, one of whom said, "PAUL?? PAUL??" in this incredulous voice. It was quite funny, actually. No, this is NOT THAT Paul.

It wasn't until maybe ten years later, when all the hoopla had died down, that I saw what wonderful music the Beatles had written.

TOD:  well I think everybody who knows me will know I vote for "Fool on the Hill" by SM&B66, not only a great cover version, but one of the few cover versions that charted higher than the original by the Beatles.  Sergio's love affair with Beatles material actually started several years earlier on his solo albums, but there's a very rare Atlantic 45 (never released on LP or CD) of a transitional version of Brasil '65 (not the one recorded by Atlantic and Capitol) containing a very B66-esque treatment of "All My Loving."  The first B66 album contained a nice version of "Daytripper."  And later in the B66 canon, he did a smashing version of "Norwegian Wood."  There's a live Japanese album with a somewhat less stellar cover of "Something," featuring his 70s vocalist Bonnie Bowden.

Cleo:  Wow!  I haven't seen that name in a while.  I'm a bit too young for the tv series, but our family dogs throughout my childhood were Basset Hounds, so I had a Cleo Golden Book when I was little which I still remember quite well.

Sorry to hear about Mr Ronnie Burns.  I watched HAPPY when it was first on, it was produced by the folks who did THE PEOPLE'S CHOICE the show with Cleo the talking basset hound.

It was funnier when we heard what the dog thought.

The dog was much funnier, for some reason the baby seemed odd.  I had no idea, that I can recall, the relationship of Ronnie Burns to his famous parents.

I hate this computer of Jo's! I had written a post and the computer, just as it died with an earlier email, screwed up the transmission and lost it.

I'm off to the library to do some work.

What I tried to post earlier was that I had a wonderful dinner with the Freemans: pork chops, pease cooked with bits of ham, a baked rice and gruyere casserole that wasquite wonderful, and a delish gateau a l'orange. I got back quite late to find that my niece, her husband and son Chase had just arrived from Tennessee and I was up visiting with them till around 1 am.

I never did get to the library; my dad's girlfriend Lucille, thinking the dinner was today, showed up and we had a nice visit.  I will work here  until I head over to DR Ginny's.

OK, I think it was the PENNY LANE/STRABERRY FIELDS FOREVER single, from MMT.

Someone may have already written a post re this.
The single was in a way the Sgt Pepper's Single!. Recorded for the album and released at the same time though not included on the LP. George Martin later admitted it was a "Marketing mistake".

MMT's release was an E.P. until an album later with other singles was released.  "I Am The Walrus" made it to a single as the "B" side of "Hello Goodbye".

Quote
Hey, no rush. We'll all just fritter away the eight days we have already agreed we could be talking!

It’s my understanding the AMPTP set this date.

According to my screenwriter friends the WGA has been practically begging the AMPTP to return to the table and would be willing to return ANYTIME, the sooner the better.

Was very busy this afternoon so I only got a couple of things watched.

I began with Tuesday night's SVU. This was the episode, heavily advertised, in which Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) is blinded. It did happen, but the ads made it sound more serious that it actually turned out to be. He has more blurred vision than actual blindness.

Arye Gross played (very well) the schizophrenic who was responsible for Stabler's blindness.

I didn't have time to start anything new, so instead I put in PRIDE & PREJUDICE (the Keira Knightley version) to see what it looked like upconverted and on my new TV.

Much of it (the first hour or so) looks very nice for SD-DVD, but there are pixilation issues in places. I'm sure the new HD-DVD looks splendid. (I saw the movie for the first time on HBO-HD where it looked superb.) If I get an HD-DVD player, this movie will be one of the first I get to play on it.

Same year, anyway...

Indeed, and the same feel!

WIKIPEDIA: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sgt._Pepper's_Lonely_Hearts_Club_Band)
Quote
Prior to beginning work on Sgt. Pepper, the Beatles had begun to work on a series of songs that were to form an album thematically linked to childhood and everyday life. The first fruits of this exercise - "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" were released as singles under pressure from EMI to meet their traditional release structure of one album and four singles a year. Once the singles were released the concept was abandoned in favour of 'Pepper'. However, traces of this initial idea survive in the lyrics to several songs on the album ("Day in the Life", "Lovely Rita", "Good Morning, Good Morning", "She's Leaving Home" and "When I'm Sixty-Four") and it could be argued provide more of a unifying theme for the album than that of the Pepper concept itself.
...
Two songs dropped from Sgt. Pepper, "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane", were both recorded in late 1966 and early 1967. The unusually long gap between Beatles releases, combined with the group's withdrawal from touring, resulted in producer George Martin's being placed under increasing pressure by EMI and Capitol to deliver new material. He reluctantly issued the two songs as a double-A-sided single in February 1967. In keeping with the group's usual practice, the single tracks were not included on the LP (a decision Martin maintains he regrets to this day). They were released only as a single in the UK at the time, but were subsequently included as part of the American LP version of Magical Mystery Tour (which was issued as a 6-track EP in Britain).

Since I didn't have anything thawed, I dragged der B to the store to find something for dindin.  What does he decide he wants more than anything else?  Leg of lamb!

Which is now out of the oven, and I hope I roasted it correctly.  The sides of roasted carrots, beets, and taters are finishing up as I write this.

And I'd better figure out what to do with the mint, so I can sauce that lamb.

Also, my schedule will be interesting over the next week.

I'm in on Sunday, off on Wednesday.

Tuesday, I work an eight hour shift until closing.

Wednesday, I'm back in at eight in the morning, for another eight hour shift.  That's two long shifts with a minimal turnaround (although it could be worse, starting at six AM).

Then, on Thursday, I'm in from one to six-thirty.  (This saves us from going to Magic Mommie's for Thanksgiving dinner.)

Off on Friday, back in on Saturday.

This leaves me with cooking Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday after work.  So, while we were at the store and I'm looking over the turkey breasts (no reason to cook an entire bird), der B spots... DUCK!

I'll be roasting us a duck for Thanksgiving.

 :o

Now I just have to figure out what to do alongside the duck.

Chestnuts, in some fashion.

Brussels sprouts sound right.

Something that needs mushroom gravy (I do a great mushroom gravy).

That should be enough.

Don't know, not worried about it.  Magic Mommie's cooking is well worth missing.  As is Magic Mommie.

I'll have to spend Christmas with her, as it is.  (We're closed Christmas, the only day of the year we shut down.)

This is the woman who, last year, insisted on "regaling" the entire table of adults after Christmas dinner with a story about her best friend had best friend's "loser" boyfriend.  Only instead of simply saying "loser" she held her hand up to her forehead and did the "L" symbol, something she should have grown out of by the end of middle school.

When I whispered to der B about the girlfriend having "a lesbian boyfriend", MM refused to take the hint and instead changed her story's reference to the boyfriend verbally as "the Loooo-zer!"

This summer MM was thrilled to be the best matron at girlfriend and boyfriend's wedding.  It took every bit of self control to keep from asking said girlfriend (at a birthday party prior the big event), "So, you're marrying the Lesbian, then?"  It would have been fun explaining that comment.

MM's habit of tearing down her friends and badmouthing them at every opportunity makes the holidays a really horrid experience.  And I know that she tears into me whenever I'm not around.  So, no, I will not miss spending Thanksgiving with her, not one bit.

Some people are simply poisonous.

I had my first Bloody Mary when I was in LA this past April, at the home of Van Dyke Parks---prepared by the man himself!

After that, Greg, friend Susan and I had a sumptuous Chinese dinner with bk and Adrianna, sampling those dishes we'd heard tell about on this here site.

The morning had even included a lovely brunch given by the Randy Newman equivalent to HHW. (And almost as popular a site as HHW!)

I just got back from DR Ginny's to find Randy's house in an uproar: my niece Alison, who can be extremely touchy at times, got into a fight with her dad, decided she no longer wanted to be here, announced she was going back to Tennessee, and dragged her husband Andy and Chase out of the house. Randy and Jo look shellshocked, and I'm sure Andy and Chase are unhappy over the situation. A side of me suspects that she's feeling she's not getting enough attention; God knows she's a raging Drama Queen at times.

I have to say that I'm pissed she screwed up what was looking like a wonderful weekend, and I'm sorry she and her family won't be here tomorrow. Maybe Lady M will show up to take her place.  Oy.

I spent a good portion of the evening with BAD SANTA. The Blu-ray offers the unrated cut and the cirector's cut. I figured I'd watch what the director wanted me to see, so I watched his cut.

The premise was OK - holiday Santa and his dwarf cohort play Santa and his elf at Christmas time so they can case out the department store and rob in on Christmas Eve. The Santa, of course, is a drunken, lecherous, foul-mouthed pig. SOme of the toilet humor and potty mouth was funny, but 90 minutes wore pretty thin for me. And, of course, in these PC times, NO Santa who behaved in this way (cursing at the kids, having sex with women in the changing rooms during his break while in his Santa costume and seen by the store manager) would last a day at ANY department store in this country.

And, the funny thing is that by the end, a kid makes him more kindly and agreeable and thoughtful. The movie is simply HEIDI with curse words.

I watched all of the special features: a blooper reel, some outtakes, some alternate scenes, a behind the scenes featurette, and Roger Ebert interviewing the director and film editor after the unrated cut was premiered somewhere (I'll have to look again at the notes to see where that took place.)

I got about 2/3 of the way through the audio commentary which I'll also finish up tomorrow.
Title: Re:THE POINT OF THE IDLE CHATTER

Oh, I did go to the unrated cut of the film and saw some of the changes. Longer scenes with more profanity, some profane voiceover narration that's been removed, and a different ending that's more slapstick funny. The ending on the director's cut is sweeter and more whimsical.

And then I watched TORCHWOOD. Good episode. I wondered when they were going to put those creatures from the premiere episode back into play.

Of course, the plot of the episode resembles nothing more than FIGHT CLUB, but I kind of thought that's where it was going when we were walking around the guy's apartment and there are boxing gloves all over the place and posters of fighters on the walls.

Well, today I saw the matinee performance of Whistle Down the Wind (http://www.5thavenue.org/show/whistledownthewind0708/)[/b] in Seattle.  Here's what DR Matthew wrote about the show, when he saw it:

Quote
Last night, the DP and I traveled to Sacramento and saw the National Tour of Whistle Down the Wind.  An ALW show that I've never seen and one Cast Recording that I was never too excited about.  The show was really good.  However, the direction was lacking.  It was rather slow.  The cast was great and the kids were fantastic.  I didn't have high expectations going in to the show and I didn't tell the DP the plot for fear he may not be interested.  In the end, I was quite surprised about what a cute little show this actually is and it even has a message.  The DP found the conductor distracting as he has bopping around like a metronome, actually, he was the metronome as he was playing while conducting.  I had seen this guy conduct before, I believe it was the National Tour of Hairspray and he is quite animated.  The band was great, however.  I think I'd want to see the show again, and I hope it becomes available to do someday as it definitely has possibilities and charm.

I agree with most of what he said (especially about the conductor and the direction), except that overall, I don't think I liked the show as much as Matthew. :-\ And I'm sure that it didn't help that I got there 10 minutes after it started...dammit. :P My bad.  Anyway, I enjoyed being there and watching it (and most of the men were certainly nice to look at up close...me, being in the third row! ;)), but overall, it just didn't do anything for me.  I liked the "Songs from Whistle Down the Wind (http://www.amazon.com/Whistle-Down-Songs-Various-Artists/dp/B0000241XU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1195360889&sr=1-2)" CD more than the original London cast (http://www.amazon.com/Whistle-Down-Wind-Original-London/dp/B00000JJWL/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1195360889&sr=1-1), which they were selling in the lobby.  This new version also seems to have a lot more spoken dialogue than the CD.  The set was great and the singers were very good, but there just seemed (to me) to be too many "internal monologues" where people just stood there and sang...and just stood there.  I think that if they release a new recording of this version, I'll enjoy that more.  Just my 2¢.
Title: Re:THE POINT OF THE IDLE CHATTER
Post by: George on November 17, 2007, 08:53:07 PM
And also being sold in the lobby was the debut solo CD for the girl playing Swallow, Andrea Ross (http://www.amazon.com/Moon-River-Andrea-Ross/dp/B000KRN03W/ref=pd_sim_m_img_12).  She was very good and had a wonderful voice. :)

So... I disembark tomorrow morning, then head to Disneyworld where I will be staying at the Coronado Springs Resort, and then I plan to hit as many of the Parks and as many of the rides as I possibly can before the Parks close tomorrow night.  :)  -I really just want to see the "Finding Nemo" stage show since I played all the New York City auditions for it last year.  Alas, I don't think any of the original cast members are still with the show, but I still want to see it.  And then I'll probably finish my day at Epcot watching the fireworks, although there's been a "rumor" that there may be a group heading to Dolly Parton's Dixieland Stampede.  :)  We shall see.

DR SWW - Chestnuts and Brussel Sprouts actually go together very well in one dish.  Sort of like Green Beans Almondine, without the green beans or the almonds.  ;)

And now, I'm going to finish watching "Ghost Whisperer."

The last 5 episodes were all writen by different writers.

The ghosts did not inhabit the father/daughter, they "overlayed" (I think that was the phrase) them - meaning they appeared different to outside observers.

Why is that supernatural manifestation more unbelievable than the other goings on?

der Brucer

The term wasn't "overlayed."  Jay Mohr's character said that it was called "oppression," which is not the same thing as "possession," but I don't remember the distinction.

Well... The boat is still doing a bit of this of that, which is making my head feel a bit like this and that, so...

Again, I hope everyone has been having a wonderful weekend.

Goodnight.

Topic of the Day:  The Beatles...not really a fan at all.  I enjoy listening to songs of theirs if they're on, but I've never gotten any of their recordings.

It is now meaningless to have a solo CD - when I began producing them, with Liz Callaway being the first, basically no one was doing them at all, save for an odd one every now and then.  I remember Liz asking what the market would be for such a thing, and my replying "I'm going to create the market."  And for years, I did, and each album was special for the artist because very few had them.  Now everyone, from Audra to people who've been in the business ten minutes have a debut album.  Meaningless.
