Well, you've read the notes, you are already stuffed from reading the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently eating the Turkeys in the survival of the fittest.

personally I think the best part of thanksgiving is the cranberry sauce - I do not eat it all year so that on Thanksgiving and Christmas it is special.

My grandmother used to make a wonderful cranberry relish with a food mill.  I think she used whole oranges, rind and all.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... Well, I'm still up, and I'm about to head to the airport.  For some reason, I'm actually looking forward to riding the A Train out to Queens to catch the AirTrain to JFK.  Yes, the trip will take about and hour and a half, but it's something I've never done before, so I'm looking at it as adventure.  I was toying with the idea of heading to Penn Station and then taking the LIRR to Jamaica and then taking the AirTrain from there, but, all in all, that might save me 15 minutes of transit time.  And by staying on the A Train all the way out to Howard Beach, I only have one transfer to worry about.

Sounds like a plan to me.

My mom used to make a similar recipe.  I think she came across it in Better Homes & Gardens.  I loved it so much, that I would just eat it plain - I'd treat it as my vegetable/fruit.  And if we had leftovers, it always tasted great over pancakes, or I'd spread it like jam on my toast.  YUMMY!

*And I recently looked at a recent copy of Better Home & Gardens... WOW!  The magazine was never the most "technical" periodical out there, but it really has gone the way of "convenience" and "time-saving".  I was surprised at how dumb-downed some of the recipes were.

Well... I should log off and shut down and start heading to the subway in a few.  Thanks for all the Travel Vibes!

I should be able to post once I'm down in Virginia, but just in case I get side-tracked - nieces and nephew have a tendency to do that - I do want to wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving.  May you celebrate it with the ones you love and the ones who love you, and may you also be Thankful for those who are no longer with us, but live on in our minds and hearts.

Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm listening to Alfred Hitchcock's Music To Be Murdered By - his intros to each track are hilarious, written by James Allardyce, who wrote all his TV show wraparounds.  The music is fun, with great stereo sound, plus the CD also includes the complete soundtrack to Circus of Horrors.

I plumb MISSED "Project Runway" this evening.  It totally eluded my attention for some reason (probably because I was scanning through the HD channels...BRAVO is channel 48 here...and I was up in the 702s through 798s.

I'm torn.

Torn, I tell you.

I have it in mind to go out on Black Friday and shop for a computer and a lounge chair.

I also have it in mind to stay home away from the crowds and do something in/around the house.

That's two pieces of my mind in conflict.

I won't have peace of mind until I make a decision.

Something I started this afternoon was dubbing VHS tapes onto DVD-Rs.  I started with the 2001 Nationals and World Figure Skating Championships, but only the Michelle Kwan performances.

Looking back, it's only Kwan I'll truly want to re-watch except for a rare few Ice Dancing performances and Pairs performances.  I already have the last two Winter Olympics well-represented on DVD, so those aren't going to figure into my dubbing.

Good Morning! Once again...

I'm currently in the JetBlue terminal at JFK, and, boy, is this place a veritable hotbed of activity!

The subway ride here wasn't too bad.  I had my iPod with me, and that helped to pass the time - Thank You, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington.  I've never really ridden the subway during the wee hours of the morning, but I've heard things here and there about what one could see and hear - and smell - on the subways during the wee hours of the morning... And I'm afraid those tales are all true.  ;)

Check-in was a breeze.  Security was too, and I just had a breakfast burrito from "Mex and the City".  Alas, I don't think the spa here in the terminal is open just yet.  Ah, well... Next time.

I'm sort of amazed right now... There have been quite a number of pages over the intercom for various passengers who have checked in, but have not yet boarded their flights.  I always wonder what could have happened to someone between the security check-point and the gate.  Seems kind of Stephen King-ish to me.

Thanksgiving morning greetings!  It seems so odd not to have our house set up for the family extravaganza today.  Richard and I, along with my mom, are going to Richard's brother's house in Cincinnati.  That brother is the father of the nephew who just returned from Iraq and he (the nephew) is visiting his parents.  We'll be glad to see him and he'll be glad to see my pecan pie.

Of course, it's different not to have Harriet and Richard and I are dealing also with our DS Rob being away from us on a holiday for the first time.  We were wondering last night if it's as weird for him as it is for us.

I'm not a big fan of Thanksgiving.  There are always other places I would rather be on my day(s) off than in the kitchen with tom turkey roasting away.
Many Thanksgivings, I have traveled to either Myrtle Beach or NYC for a holiday, cooking-free, weekend.
I think that the best Thanksgiving was a couple of years ago, when I met up with Aussie Al Paige in NYC.  The weather was unseasonably warm, the hotel was wonderful, the walking and the shows were outstanding.
The worst Thanksgiving was definitely spent in Myrtle Beach, and it wasn't the food or the walking or the company which made it sad, bat a tragic death in our family.  My 43 year old cousin suffered a heart attack  before dinner, in Pennsylvania, and I was the first one to receive the news.  His mother and father had a house three houses down from our house on the beach, so their daughters called me to let me know to be prepared to spend time with my aunt and uncle.
The tale does have a comic side; Roseanna and I left Myrtle Beach on Sunday morning - my cousin's funeral would be on Monday - and drove quite quickly back to the 'burgh.  I got in the house, changed my clothes and drove down to the funeral home.  Only I went to the WRONG one!  There are two same-named funeral homes within a mile of each other, and I didn't hit the right one.  After visiting the grieving people at the wrong one, I made a hasty retreat and made it to the right one with only fifteen minutes of viewing time to spare!

Maybe some foodie DR can tell me why we always see TOM turkey?

And why never THOMASINA turkey?

Because a THOMASINA turkey is called a HEN.  And some cooks prefer the hen for serving over the tom, but both are eaten on Thanksgving

The story goes that the male turkey was nicknamed "Tom" by Benjamin Franklin as a not very flattering reference to Thomas Jefferson

The last couple of days have been quite busy.

Tuesday, my shift at the store ran until ten-thirty.  Fortunately, I was able to get a lot of shopping done during my lunch break, so everything was covered for the Thanksgiving dindin.  But, between cooking our dinners for Tuesday night and getting in some necessary wind-down time, I only got in about four hours sleep before having to get up and get going again, because Wednesday I had a long shift starting at eight in the morning.

And after getting off work, der B and I had to head up to Dover to pick up a couple of things he'd had on order.  That's a lengthy drive.  Then, we tried out a new fried chicken joint called Kickin' Chicken.  Der Brucer was less than thrilled.  I crashed early.

Today?  There's stuff I need to get made for dinner tonight before I head off to work.  Yes, I'm working on Thanksgiving.  I happen to enjoy it.  After the surging crowds of the last couple of days, Thanksgiving is nice and relaxed.  There's the people who come in for their pre-cooked Thanksgiving dinners from the Deli department.  There's the people who come in looking for those last couple of things they forgot they would be needing.  There's the husbands who have been sent out of the house by their wives basically to get them out of the house for a little while.  And it's a nice, congenial day at the store.

So, I'd better get the chestnuts cooked, and the taters boiled.  And I'm thinking it would be smarter to break down that duck, so I can cook the breasts when I get home and save the rest for later.  (American ducks don't roast well when you do them whole, it turns out, because there's too much fat in the breast to render out properly before the breast meat is correctly cooked.  French ducks roast well, because they have less fat, but we don't get French ducks in these parts.  C'est la vie.)

Joy of Cooking suggests steaming the onions, rather than boiling them, and then saucing them with a basic white sauce.  They use medium sized onions, rather than pearl, but I would expect the results would be quite nice either way.

For one cup of white sauce, a.k.a. Bechamel, melt 2 T butter over low heat.  Add and stir in 1 1/2 to 2 T flour, and cook for 3 to 5 minutes.  DO NOT LET THIS MIXTURE BROWN, KEEP THE HEAT LOW!  In other words, make a simple white roux.  Slowly stir in 1 C Milk or Cream.  Cook, stirring with a whisk or wooden spoon, until thickened and smooth.  (They also suggest placing the sauce in a 350 oven for 20 minutes to cook slowly, and then straining, but who has that much oven space on Thanksgiving?)

James Beard, in American Cookery, doesn't even mention them.

The most memorable Thanksgiving I can remember was when my second partner Frank and I spent Thanksgiving in Las Vegas. It was one of the best trips I've ever been on. We had a blast all over the city, and for dinner, of course, we went to an all-you-can-eat buffet which offered everything one could wish for to eat. I don't remember ever being more stuffed. Today, I'm looking forward to watching the rest of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, the two TV shows on the DVR (SVU, CSI: NY), and probably a Blu-ray disc before prime time starts tonight.

Surprisingly, some of the networks are showing new episodes of shows (ABC, CBS) rather than reruns. With the NBC comedies gone (except for an OFFICE repeat at 10:30), I'll be able to catch up with SUPERNATURAL's season 3 premiere which I missed due to other commitments.

I just realized something.

It's Thanksgiving.

Therefor, it's time for Christmas Muzak!

Yep, in every store nothing will be heard for the next month except for Christmas Muzak.  Over and over and over.

And, in these politically correct times (definition of political correctness: the fine art of taking offense where none was intended), this means that any and all Christmas CAROLS cannot be played, because it might offend those who are not Christians.  Only Christmas SONGS are allowed.

(Carol of the Bells, a.k.a. the Ukranian Christmas Carol, is allowed, but only because no one knows the lyrics.)

And how many versions of Silver Bells can you hear per hour before going insane?  It isn't the shoppers that drive store clerks mad, it's the constant repetition of the muzak!

You're quite welcome.

Oh, the white sauce can be flavored, if you like, with a bay leaf, or any other herb or spice for that matter.  Nutmeg is a classic addition, but use freshly grated from a whole nut, not the stuff you find pre-grated in a jar, because there really is a difference in the flavor.

TOD: I love Thanksgiving (and that from a non-baker, non-cooker ta boot), so I haven't had a bad one yet. My favorite memories are those of Thankskgiving as a child at my grandparents' home out in the country in Texas. I agree about the X-mas music.

Whenever I've worked in retail, and I've done quite a lot of it, I've loved the constant barrage of Christmas Muzak between late November and early January. My critics might say that explains a lot of myy arrangements, but if I have to deal with a hostile or difficult public, I'drather enjoy the background music and tune them out.

Is anyone planning on taping/DVR-ing the TCM broadcast of the little-shown film of  THE HAPPY TIME this evening?

The chestnuts have been peeled.  It's a good thing I'm doing them as a puree, and not whole, because a lot of them broke apart.

I had a wonderful lot of little chestnut chips to nibble on, of course.

Most memorable Thanksgiving was back in the 80s. I was invited to my sister Sue and family's house for the holiday. My sister is notorious for changing plans and giving little or no notice.

Well, at some point between the time she told me Thanksgiving was going to be at their house, and that actual day, they all decided to spend Turkey day at Mount Hood skiing...only they forgot to tell me. So I showed up at their house and spent Thanksgiving with their dog Cindy! LOL!

Good morning, everyone, and HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

My favorite Thanksgivings were at my aunt and uncle's house--yes, JRAND, my director-of-photography uncle and his wife. I was always very fond of my aunt and uncle, said aunt was a good cook, said aunt and uncle had a very nice, spacious home, which I LOVED (BK and I drove by on our Kritzer tour). As I related last year, I was an only child and amused myself by reading my aunt's Vogue magazines (I did a short stint as a fashion designer some years later) and reading my uncle's old scripts, which were always kept in a pile in the den closet. My uncle and my dad, who also worked in the studios, would talk shop while my aunt and mother gossiped. The gossip didn't interest me, though some of the shop-talk did. Mostly I had my nose in a magazine or scrip--that is, when we weren't eating. I do miss those days.

....then take a nap and if it warms up might even do some yardwork to clean things up from the storm last week.

Then off to Turkey and all that good stuff!

While I love the family celebrations here at our home and at the homes of other relatives, one of my fondest memories is of Thanksgiving 1977 (30 years ago - yikes!).  My librarian friend Becky and I were both still single and decided to go to New York City for the holiday weekend.  We saw 5 Broadway shows, went to Radio City Music Hall and the Guggenheim Museum, and attended the Macy's parade.  A family from New Jersey also at the parade offered to "adopt" us for the holiday - the mom thought we were being very adventuresome.  We had Thanksgiving dinner at Mamma Leone's.

Besides Susan Hayward  brilliantly being Susan Hayward in, "With a Song in My Heart," we have Thelma Ritter as Clancy who can steal a whole movie and the studio to go with it before anyone notices.   They managed to make a good movie out of something that could have been very sappy.  It is interesting that Max Showalter (who appears briefly as David Wayne's show biz partner) also wrote that that hideous hillbilly number of theirs.

I am now in the process of stuffing celery.  Unlike my grandmother who had these clean, even pieces, I have cream cheese all over everything.    Pretty soon, I'll undoubtedly blood on something too.  Luckily, the red and green together are quite festive.

Tomorrow I am working, and I am getting together my CD's for the season..including a couple sent to me by DR ELMORE which were great favorites last year.

I loved the cartoon that DR GINNY posted a couple of days ago, with the BIG XMAN SEMI TRAILER TRUCK honking its horn at a small turkey in the road..... "Get out of the way!!!"

DH Richard had sent that to me at work, knowing that it expressed my sentiments exactly.

Yesterday, our favorite local editorial cartoonist, Jim Borgman of the Cincinnati Enquirer, depicted a busy airport gate at which the monitor reads:

Over River - Delayed
Thru Woods - Delayed
Grmothrs Hse - Cancelled

Hope no DRs experience anything like that if their weekend plans require air transport.

First of all, a very Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.  One of the things I'm thankful for this year are (is?) the many friends I've made right on this here site.  :)

Re:  The Girl Next Door.  I'm still somewhat slack-jawed that several thousand people have read my review:

http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?___f=preview&ID=31443&___r=%2Freviews%2Flogin%2Freviews.php%3FrecordState%3DApproved

BK, you'll see I whole-heartedly agree with your Drew Casper comment, but I also include Miles Kreuger, who really ought to look in a mirror once in a while before agreeing to be filmed.  Meow.  BTW, Haver was dubbed in this film (and in most of hers, actually, though she sings herself in some of the earliest films).

Re:  schlep.  I got to call The Oregonian today because some goyische writer used "schlep" in an article on Charlie Brown, when he obviously meant "shlub."  I wished him a Happy Channukah.  Meow.  :)

Speaking of The Oregonian--I perused yesterday's posts re:  Enchanted.  Our reviewer was not very enthusiastic, but it seems he's in the minority.

June Haver was dubbed?  Whoever did it was great, and she did a great job convincing me it was her.  I can usually tell, but the match was perfect.
Title: Re:THE DAY THE TURKEYS ATE US

DR JMK says that his review of THE GIRL NEXT DOOR has had an extraordinary number of hits.....and the one review on Amazon.com says that June Haver fell during the shooting of one dance number and suffered a concussion, causing a delay of production from late 1951 to early 1952...the film wasn't released until 1953....during the few months that she was in the convent.

I had never read her IMDB entry, and it's interesting.  She decided to enter the convent soon after her fiance, a dentist, died during routine surgery.  She left the convent when she became ill, returned to California, planned to go back to the convent, but met Fred MacMurray.

And that is what is called changing your mind with a  vengeance.

Happy Turkey Day all!

Thank you, Jose, for your post.  I guess you all know that my Mom is very much on my mind today.

I guess my favorite memory of the day is when she and my Dad were alive and we were all together.

I had several invites to Thanksgiving dinner today but I have chose to stay home.  I still get very tired and grumpy in the afternoon and when I want to lay down, I want to lay down.  Not that I wouldn’t have enjoyed the company but there’s also the thought that I would have to wait until someone else wanted to leave before I could come home.

My turkey was cooked and is in the fridge thawing out from when I cooked it a couple of Sundays ago before I went on my trip.  I’ll just heat it up in the good old microwave when the time comes.

I did feel up to making chestnuts.  I put the X in them yesterday and soaked them in salt water all night long.  I baked them this morning and they are so yummy!  The holiday wouldn’t be the same without them.  And of course I also bought a pomegranate for later this evening.

I’m thankful for good friends and family and coming through yet another surgery.

I saw Dolly Parton on one of the floats this morning and I don’t know how she does it.  Her back must be a mess.   I know that mine felt the difference right away.

It’s funny that I was called “four eyed Dolly Parton” when I went to high school.  I can’t begin to tell you how many times I went home crying because of how cruel the kids were about the two things there was no way I could do anything about.   Now there is no way I could be called either.  Funny how life has a way of working out.  :) ;) :D

Read the review and realized I hadn't talked about the transfer.  I'll slightly disagree with JMK - the colors are fine, but the matrices are clearly off, which is why you see a slightly green halo around so many things - the matrices being off creates a softer than necessary appearance - this happens a lot on Fox films for some reason, and also some Universal Technicolor transfers suffer from it majorly.

Here is a recipe for the best creamed corn ever.  Who will be the first hainsie/kimlet to make it this very day?

2 pkg (10oz each) frozen kernal corn - cooked in water and drained
8oz (1/2 pint) whipping cream
8oz (1 cup) homogenized milk
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. Accent
6 tsp. sugar
pinch of white or cayenne pepper (I use cayenne)
3 tbs. melted butter
2 rounded tbs. flour

Combine all ingredients except the last two in pan and bring to a boil.  Simmer 5 minutes.  Blend butter with flour.  Add to corn.  Mix well to avoid lumps and remove from heat.  The End.

The "Goo Goo Dolls" are performing the halftime show for the Green Bay Packers football game.

I thought the "GGDs" were "so over".

Perhaps I'm just over 'em.  The lead singer sounds like Neil Diamond.

Most folks buy 'em frozen and then cook them too long so they're all mushy.  And since they're processed with the cores, they're bitter.

To get the best flavor/results, the core should be removed (I do a "V" cut at the bottom of each sprout).  I steam them, add lemon and butter, and then devour 'em.

I love fresh asparagus, too!

Jeanne - Could you talk about your problems with ENCHANTED a little bit, even if it means putting a spoiler warning on your post?  I loved the movie as a fairy tale, but had some problems with the plot in that -

SPOILER

- the movie seems to suggest a hopelessness in terms of potential for romance, that you'll never find your true love right here in your own world, and that seems to carry with it the idea that true love can't exist in our world and that it's unattainable.  And it seemed the Idina Menzel character settled  for someone vain and egotistical, and that bothered me a bit.

There was a period of about five years when I was in high school and early college that I got a fairly bad cold around Thanksgiving time...which was great, because I don't really care for turkey, unless it's very thinly sliced and on a sub sandwich with a lot of other stuff.  So, Thanksgiving doesn't really hold any special meaning/feelings for me.  We're a small family and are around each other all the time, so when holidays happen, it's all the same people. :-\

Well, last night's rehearsal went fairly well.  We actually ran and worked on act two twice.  Our fight choreographer/lighting designer/sound designer was there and he is in agreement about cutting some things from the show, not only to help shorten the evening, but because there is just too much show there.  Several scenes, as funny as they are, spend too much time away from the main focus of the story.  We have a rehearsal tomorrow night (for those who can be there) and then we start Hell Week on Sunday. :o

After rehearsal, a bunch of us went to a local gay-friendly bar called Jake's and sang karaoke.  I'm not particularly a fan of performing karaoke, but my friend Josh said that he was there several months ago and sang "Suddenly Seymour" with our friend Christina.  I said that I'd sing that with him and he said, "okay!"  We had a lot of fun (I sang the Audrey part ;)) and people enjoyed us...mainly because we gave one of the very few performances that was actually in tune. ;D

Had a wonderful afternoon of viewing, but, truth to tell, it was almost all stuff I'd watched before, just not on the new TV.

I began by finishing TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. Cried a couple of times, and loved it all over again. And isn't that close-up of Robert Duvall behind the bedroom door one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking things ever filmed?

Stage One of The Meal is now winding down...

There was a LOT of food on the table, and there are gonna be a lot of leftovers!  Let's see... We had...

Turkey - 20(!) lbs. and deep-fried(!!)
Honey-Baked Ham

Corn
Green Beans
Spinach Salad with Strawberries, Poppy and Sesame Seed Dressing

Then the Parade of Starches:
Mashed Potatoes
Baked Sweet Potatoes
A casserole that my mother improvised out of Yams, Persimmons, Apples and Bananas, Maple Syrup and Marshmallows.  -Quite good, and the persimmons and bananas were a nice touch.
Steamed White Rice
Arroz Gandules
Papas Fritas (a.k.a. French Fries)
Tostones - fried green plantains
A loaf of Italian Bread
Potato Rolls
Corn Bread

The desserts are still waiting in the kitchen.

Hi all.  I think I over did it.  I had walked a half a mile on the treadmill then walked down the street to get the paper (I wanted to see the sale paperwork).  I had a heck of a time finding someplace that had a paper so I had to walk all the way to Winn Dixie.

Anyway, after I posted here, I thought I would go and watch "Project Runway".  I fell sound asleep in the chair.  I don't know if I stopped breathing -- Bear nuzzling me woke me up.  I wonder if I scared him.

You know both dogs accepted my machine with no problems.  I thought they would be scared of the sound.

We just had a vegetarian feast of Tofurky and other delights that would have probably made BK's head explode.  ;)   When one of our guests mentioned apple dumplings, I was able to invoke BK himself, so along with his exploded head, he should also have burning ears.

So...I'm dubbing some Andy Hardy movies right now while there's an evening lull.  They pick up again tomorrow when they finish the series.

That said, I've been planning out my next day or two and OMG but there's so much running around to do.

I've decided to "attempt" to buy a new computer tomorrow (which will actually be my mom's Christmas present to me).  In addition, I have to go to my storage unit to retrieve my Christmas tree and ornaments.  Who knew I was so organized last year that I got that stuff into storage rather than cramming them into a closet?

If only I'd gotten half the stuff currently in my condo into storage, also.

I actually enjoyed it. They showed a ton of never before seen footage.  And at least if it's after the fact they can show some of the decision-making that they don't show us during the season (they don't want to spoil it so we know who is going that night).

Is tomorrow (the day after thanksgiving) still the biggest shopping day in the year in the US?

Here it's Boxing Day (the day after christmas).

I haven't really gotten into the buying spirit yet.  We only had our first snowfall today.  So i guess i find it hard to think of tomorrow being the biggest shopping day.  Although it is pretty funny to see the zoo that is Boxing day. Hello! I just wanted to wish everyone at HHW a very Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm home from school until sometime Sunday afternoon- normally I leave later in the evening on Sundays, but I have a feeling that traffic on 81 will be horrible. I am LOVING being home for a few days; my schedule has been exhausting for the past few weeks at JMU (My Chorale performed Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with the National Phil this past weekend), and it's so nice to be at home with my family, and to finally see my boyfriend, who lives up here. I'm working at Borders over the week though ( like TD!), and my schedule for the next two days is 8am-8pm! Good money :)

I hope you've all had an unbearable amount of delicious Thanksgiving food!

Fred, I find your ENCHANTED comments very interesting. I hadn't thought about it quite like that, but I agree that that message came across.

Spoiler Warning: ENCHANTED NEGATIVE COMMENTS FOLLOW!

My reactions are a bit of a jumble right now. I'll try to sort them out. Many are personal preferences.

Re love stories. I'm a bit tired of the old cliche of love conquers all. That said, I enjoy quirky stories of love, eg Minette Walters' THE ICE HOUSE. At times, ENCHANTED seemed to be saying that love isn't like the fairy tales, but then it seemed to revert back to fairy-taleness. It was obvious that the divorce lawyer would end up with Amy Adams, but why? She was just waaay too much of an air-head for me. See? You can get away with being an air-head in fantasies, but not in live action--not for me, anyway. I guess this is my primary complaint about the film. There are things you can do sucessfully in animation/fantasy, that just don't work otherwise. A friend of mine from the theatre arts dept at UCLA, specifically puppetry, once commented that you can have violence in puppet shows and the kids are fine with it, but that same violence would be gratuitous and unsettling in another arena. I'm fine with the mix of animation and non-animation in concept, but for me it just didn't work well here.

Good Evening!

As for my partaking earlier this evening...

I actually was not that hungry, and I did not sample everything that was on the table.  I was just listing the contents.   -Even though rice is traditional at every Filipino meal, I find it non-traditional at Thanksgiving.

As for the desserts, I only had the homemade ones - a brownie and a small slice of the Pumpkin-Pecan Pie.

I'm still "recovering" from some of my Cruise indulging, so... ;)

More spoiler warnings!

I suppose Disney films are supposed to be slick--and this was. Too slick for my taste. The chipmunk animation was indeed very clever and beautifully done. Frankly, I'd prefer a few less rodents. Shock value? Oh, yes, they got that. Why does the slickness bother me? I guess it's because there was so much money behind this film, so much technique, when I felt the story needed work, that the real meat just wasn't there. I'm a story person. The story has to work for me. And this didn't.

Re the acting. As I mentioned before, I was very pleased to see Timothy Spall. I felt his performance was the strongest of the film. I did not care for Amy Adams. I found Susan Sarandon uninspired. I will give credit to James Marsden.

I loved the score. I felt it really worked for the fantasy feel that the film needed.

To sum up, I don't feel that the film really knew what it was, but had megabucks to play with. I've often been very impressed with small theatrical productions that have LITTLE in the way of resources, but instead of being a disadvantage, it actually spurred creativity. I felt just the opposite here. Maybe I'm just a little-theatre person at heart. I don't expect anyone to share my views. They are simply, mine.

POSSIBLE "ENCHANTED" SPOILER...

I don't think the movie was trying to be that deep.  IMHO, I think it was just saying that sometimes our Prince Charming and Our Princess are not always who you think, who your dream they are.  And that people get together and connect at many different levels.   One person's "deep", may be another person's "wading pool".

However, now that I've read a couple more of the reviews, I do find the comments about moments of "weak direction" a little puzzling.  As well as the "unflattering" make-up for Susan Sarandon.  Aren't all villains basically candidates for makeovers?  ;)

Next, I put in the movie I'll be watching tomorrow - RETURN TO NEVER LAND. I ran out of time playing it, but I'll go back to it tomorrow as I'm going through the rest of the disc. And, yes, I'll watch the movie again. And since we're talking about food, and I've started reminiscing about my recent cruise...

The first night of the cruise, the "team" dined at Palo, the "Adults Only" restaurant on board the Disney Wonder.  Wonderful Italian food, cooked to order.  I started off my meal with a "Limone e Basilico" martini - Limoncello shaken with some Fresh Basil leaves - quite refreshing.

For my appetizer, I chose a half-portion of one of the Pasta Selections that evening: Pumpkin and Broccoli Gnocchi with Rock Shrimp.  Then came an Herb-Crusted Rack of Lamb for my entree.  Then for dessert, a trio of scoops of gelato from their daily selection: Mocha, Caramel and Pistachio.

Our amazing waitress, Agnes, took very good care of us throughout the evening.  She actually remembered the head casting director from some of this past visits, so with each course, she brought an extra dish for everyone to share.  During the dessert course, she not only brought out their new "Pineapple Almond Ravioli" - thin slices of roasted pineapple surrounding an almond mousse - soooo good - but also their new Death By Chocolate confection, also quite good.

And to finish off the meal, not only did she bring some complimentary Brachetto d'Aqui, but also some amazing concoction of limoncello, champagne and something I need to research. :)

CSI had a cutsey episode tonight, the kind I really don't like. They had a couple of these last year (when the bodies started talking to themselves in the morgue and another where the lab rats got together to try to piece together the miniature murder mystery from last season.)

Tonight, Hodges was working on a new board game and posing various scenarios for other lab guys to solve. I knew the identity of the murderer in his last puzzle very quickly.

The only good thing about this episode is that openly gay actor Gerald McCollough was back as gun expert Bobby. His character had not been been included in cases for almost two years.

Ohhhh...I missed the negative food comments. A cruise not serving great desserts?? Oh, dear.

Well, now that I think of it, I don't think I ever gave any detailed food reports.  In any case...

Since I come from a food service family, I totally understand the need to have "stable" and "safe" food when it comes to buffet service, so, all that non-dairy whipped topping didn't really bother me.  I just don't want to consume it.  However, their pastry chefs did make some quite delicious cookies, and the coffee bar had a wonderful selection of biscotti and other dolci which I happily indulged.

As for the Mesquite-Smoke Ice Cream...  The second night of the cruise, they presented an on-deck dessert buffet after the Pirate Party.  However, they also provided some savory food too: sandwiches, chicken fingers, and some smoked turkey legs.  One table had all the cakes and cookies, and the other table had the savory items as well a cool-looking automatic crepe-making machine.  I decided to try a crepe, and I requested it "a la mode".  Well, I think the ice cream container had been sitting a bit too close to the smoked turkey leg oven - or least the exhaust system.  When I took my first bite of the crepe and ice cream, well, it tasted like smoke.  I actually thought the ice cream had gone bad.  Of course, being the "complete" taster that I am, I decided to have another bit of the crepe and ice cream just to make sure it wasn't a fluke.  Well, it wasn't a fluke.  And it took a while for that bad taste to leave my mouth.  :-\

I've never much liked Brussels Sprouts.  But I imagine I've never had them prepared properly.  I'm sure they could be tasty, done right!

The new chef at the place I've been doing most of my editing made the most amazing brussel sprouts. He drizzled olive oil over them and baked them until they were carmelized. I don't know what else he put on them, but they were always devoured immediately and there were never left-overs.

Sadly, he has left to go to a real restaurant---before I got to learn his secrets!

Most folks buy 'em frozen and then cook them too long so they're all mushy.  And since they're processed with the cores, they're bitter.

Turkey, my mother's mashed potatoes (with sour cream and cream cheese whipped into them) candided sweet potatoes, orange glazed carrots, rolls, green beans, stuffing, gravy, and I think that's the main course, then pecan or pumpkin pie.  It was all very tasty and I was very sleepy on the way home.

By the time we got there they had finished eating and everything was put away, and what was accessible didn't look so appetizing so I had a piece of  the ham we'd brought the day before, and dessert. (We brought a caramel pear mousse from our french bakery. Yummm.)

I got to spend a lot of time with my adorable 2 year old nephew. He is so wonderful!

So, tonight, I'm staying at my brother Mike's place.  This way I can spend a bit more time with John Michael, Alyssa and Emily in the morning - when I'm not so tired after being up all night and traveling.  Then sometime tomorrow afternoon, I will be heading down to Richmond with my parents.  They're staying at my brother Don's place tonight, and will be joining him in a few hours to take advantage of some of the Early Bird Black Friday sales.

I'm sorry, but I just can't imagine lining up before 4:00 AM to go shopping.  I know there are sales, but I just don't get it

In New York?  I believe I did.

Why do you ask?

I  just did a murder mystery dinner with a girl that flew out to New York to do some auditions, and that was one of them.

We need at least three frenzies.  It's Thanksgiving, for heaven's sake - are people so pigged out they can't tell us of their feasts.

It's all about bargains.  Electronics are especially desirable at bargain prices.

Fashion makes out well, too.

But I'm with you.  The only reason I'd even consider going out tomorrow is to get the best deal possible that would save my mom some money on my gift.

Funny thing, though....the more I visit sites of stores with sales, the more I find things "online" that beat the prices being offered tomorrow.

I "get" it, but I just don't have it...money that is. ;) I don't get paid until NEXT Friday, so even if I wanted to go to stores at 4:00 am, it would do me no good. ::)

;D

That's probably up to you at this time.

Since it's nearing midnight...and since so few of us seem to be able to resist the sleep-inducing chemicals of turkey, I'm guessing I won't be frenzying sufficiently to get us there by myself.

Speaking of saving money...or not...my sister bought a high-def widescreen TV a couple of months ago for around $2,000.  The exact same model is now available for only $1,200 at the store where she bought it! :P If only she'd waited these few months! :-\

I voted for the high-def videocam...and it will be offered to "some" lucky shoppers at $299 (marked down from $999).

Dinner at my sister's was the traditional stuff...turkey (free-range, though), my sister's Scarborough Fair stuffing (with parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme ;)), whole-cranberry cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes with walnuts, mashed potatoes, green salad (no iceberg lettuce, though) and a few other things not so traditional.  Dessert was pumpkin pie from a local baker that had no hydrogenated anything in it, and it was very good. :) Since I don't like turkey, it was very easy not to overdo it. :D
