Well, you've read the notes, the notes were foolish, and now it is time for you to post until the foolish cows come home.

Speaking of TWIN PEAKS, has anyone other than I read Mark Frost's Sherlock Holmes' novels, THE SIXTH MESSIAH and THE LIST OF SEVEN?  I found them to be quite delightful.

Here I am, up at 6AM, editing my demo reel for a deadline of Monday and still lacking key elements. I asked the various producers weeks ago for their comp reels and have received less than half, so now I'm having to badger them, which I hate. What a revoltin' development THAT is!

The highlight of my day will be moving all the containers out from under the bed and moving the mattress, box springs and some of the furniture out of the bedroom so we can replace the rug underneath it all with a new rug.

We didn't mean to go shopping yesterday...we were only looking for curtain rods and ended up with a big rug! But I had been searching for one like that for weeks and it was a good price!

Peter Palmeri, the Polynesian pole vaulter, often found himself dining alone - he would have dined with many a pulchritudinous pretty, but his POISONED PITHS too often kept him from being a DEIPNOSOPHIST.

I had a hard time sleeping last night.  Switching my room around to accomodate the bookcases meant moving my reading light and my alarm clock from the left side of the bed to the right - the night stand has now taken over all the duties formerly performed by the desk.  This meant that I found myself sleeping on the right side of the bed.  I could have handled this by myself easily, but the dogs got confused.  Fletcher, in particular, was insisting on sleeping to my right, which he could not do because there was no room on that side.

So he retaliated by peeing on the floor.

This led to my throwing him out of my room, and insisting that he stay out.  He kept trying to come back in, and I had to tell him no, he'd been bad and couldn't sleep on my bed.  This went on for a couple of hours.

I think I got enough sleep for the night, somehow.  We'll see how I get through work today.

TOD:

I haven't made chili for a while.

Oh, look, I bought a nice piece of beef last night!  It's just sitting there in the fridge, waiting to be cut up into nice chunks and be made into chili!  This sounds yummilicious!

(It's a good thing I don't have a craving for sushi right now... Making good sushi is probably beyond my cooking skills.)

Saturday morning greetings!  Just saw DH Richard off to Clermont County on church business and I have a few hours until it's time to pick up my mom for the Mamma Mia! matinee that's her early birthday present.  She'll turn 89 on Tuesday while she and a bunch of other senior citizens are on a bus trip to Branson, MO, for the week.

DR FJL - on last night's Numb3rs the character played by Wil Wheaton was Miles Sklar, the wealthy comic mogul.  It took a while to see any resemblance to Wesley Crusher and DH Richard was surprised when I pointed it out.

Hi, Danise, and other potential dieters!  If I went with a plan, it would probably be Weight Watchers.  For the time being, though, I'm just going to try to decline second helpings and cut down on sweets.  Finding time to exercise is a challenge to me and I sit too much, driving to work and back and at my job.

Off to Massachusetts this afternoon for a memorial on Sunday for my cousin.  She had loved art, so the memorial is being held at an art museum near her home.

It's likely that I'll be generally E&T from 1 pm today until Sunday night, since I don't know what my internet access situation will be.

Cilla - "ENCHANTED" SPOILER BELOW

BTW, obviously, feel free to stop talking about this if you feel I'm over-analyzing a harmless and purely entertaining film.  (I generally love fantasy films with happily-ever-after endings in which to escape.)

SPOILER AHEAD

I'm not saying the hopelessness with the real world that i interpreted in the ending of the story was anything intentional by the creators of the film, but in my analysis, it somehow worked out that way when I thought about how the couples had ended up.

As to the Banks couple in ENCHANTED, wouldn't they have stayed angry and bitter had it not been for the chance intervention of the fairy-tale character?

I wasn't a TWN PEAKS fan when it originally aired, but most of my friends loved it. I tried to watch it several times, but it just struck me as trying to hard to be weird for the sake of being weird.

I do agree that it has paved the way for the other out of the ordinary shows on the air right now. It would be interesting to see it again.

Good morning!

It must have dropped below freezing last night because my heat has been running on and off all morning. It's gorgeous outside, exactly what I imagine fall ought to look like: clear blue sky, leaves either gone or going from the trees, cold but not uncomfortably so.

TORCHWOOD airs its penultimate episode tonight, and from everything I've read, it's supposed to be one of the most memorable of the season. Looking forward to that.

Good morning, all! I believe my decrepit kitchen stove, not the basement boiler after all, is the source of the carbon monoxide, since I spent most of yesterday feeling very flu-ish.  I had been boiling water all day to steam up the apartment and I couldn't figure out why I had felt so good in Ohio and so puny in Manhattan.  I'll report it on Monday to my landlord and see if they can get someone in to check out/replace the stove.

The holiday work continues.

!!!!!! SPOILERS !!!!!!!

While I don't want to get into the ENCHANTED debate, it seems that there's no way out of over-analyzing a charming notion: the piece is full of ironies: Manhattan is the place "where there are no happy endings" is a funny premise and a fallacy, Idina Menzell's character was waiting for the wrong prince; if you consider her the Nurse Jane-dreaded JAP, then she's more royalty in Manhattan than a fairy tale character living in the woods can ever be to marry a bona fide prince in this world or the next. Doesn't the Cinderella moment of Giselle's glass slipper ends fitting Idina Menzell's foot pass the title on?

What I loved about the film, beyond the references to classic Disney animation, is the notion of turning fairy-tales on their heads or reworking familiar themes:
Clueless Patrick Dempsey is the Sleeping Beauty; he may have to wake Giselle from the ever-present Snow White situation but she's the sword-weilding rescuer, and this story has several fairy-tale elements
   1.  King Kong/Beauty and the Beast
   2.  La Belle au Bois Dormant in Perrault's version with even the wicked queen showing up
   3.  St George and the Dragon

There'as a bit of Persephone and the Underworld; if the myth is about six months of winter, then Giselle's descent to hell (Manhattan) brings spring to Dempsey's young daughter and wakes her from her frozen state, another version of the Snow White andSleeping Beauty stories.

Aren't the Central Park celebrants - and all their celebrations and customs (several myths there) - a reflection on the happy folk of Oz in a 1939 film based on an American fairy tale based on the folk hero's quest?

Also, I love the premise  - from the early 19th Century tales of Hoffmann to HP Lovecraft and on - that other worlds co-exist with our concept of reality and that they often merge to happiness, or madness and beyond.

I don't believe this is a folktheme, but it's certainly a common theme in the media: the social event - in this case a ball - where the masks are dropped and everyone seen with their true face.

I'm still pondering this; there's more and I may need a second or third viewing.

This is just a quick note to let you all know that I am modem-deprived with my new computer, and that means I cannot hook up same to the internet until such time as a modem is obtained (AT&T took off Thursday and Friday and doesn't "work" on weekends!).

Thus, at home, I am incommunicado from the civilized world of instant communications (unless you count the telephone).

I dropped into my office this morning to check on an eBay auction (which I WON), check mail (YES!) and to leave this note for all of you (CHECK!).

My new computer is VERY gorgeous...or maybe it's just that 22" flat-panel LCD screen that makes me feel that way (an major upgrade from the postage-stamp screen I WAS using).

If you think of me...and one or two of you will....be kind!

I'm not computer-intelligent enough to know what to look for (some simple reconfiguration...or perhaps it's because I'm using the new monitor with the old hard drive???).  At any rate....I'm hosed.

In any case...

My parents finally made it back from the stores - where they didn't buy anything(!?!?!?!?) - a little after 5:00 yesterday, and a little after that, we all jumped into the van and headed down I-95 to Richmond.  Thankfully and surprisingly, there was no traffic.  Not even at the big outlet mall.  Whew!
Title: Re:A BEACHED WHALE LIVING IN A FOOL'S PARADISE
Post by: JoseSPiano on November 24, 2007, 09:29:23 AM
We made good time heading back down to Richmond, and pulled into my parents' driveway a little before 7:00.  And since the dinner reservation that Steve had made was for 8:00, well, I hurried around a bit and got ready to head over to his place so that we could head to the restaurant.

As I was heading out the door, Steve called me and asked me where I was, and I told him I was on my way over.  Once I got to his place, he informed me that he had shifted the reservation another half-hour - whew! - and that he wanted to walk to the restaurant - What?!?!

-Normally, I don't mind walking, but since I had not packed any "warm clothes", and since the temps had dipped quite a bit last night, well... After borrowing a scarf and gloves from Steve, we walked across the James River to Morton's.
Title: Re:A BEACHED WHALE LIVING IN A FOOL'S PARADISE
Post by: JoseSPiano on November 24, 2007, 09:36:23 AM
The dinner at Morton's was excellent.  The dining room was far from full, but it appeared that only three servers plus the Maitre D' were the only ones taking care of the room.  The service wasn't slow, but I could tell that they were juggling tables and doing a couple of hand-offs here and there to make sure everyone had a pleasant dining experience.

This was Steve's first time at Morton's - and at a high-end steakhouse.  He had a received a gift card from work, so he decided to treat me to dinner.  :)  We didn't bother with salads since we knew we were going to get dessert, but we did go ahead and get some Creamed Spinach and Hash Browns to go with our steaks - a Double-Cut Filet Mignon for Steve, and a New York Strip for myself.  All quite good.  And the table bread - and Egg-Onion Loaf was totally addictive - the generous loaf made the perfect appetizer.

As for dessert, we had ordered the Lemon Soufflé at the start of our meal, and it was delivered to our table fresh out of the oven a few minutes after our dinner plates had been cleaned.  My compliments to the kitchen on the timing.  It was a very good soufflé, and the choice of Lemon was a good one since it helped to balance out some of the more decadent choices earlier in the evening.

Then after we had finished our coffees and fetched our coats, we walked back to Steve's place... With our leftovers in hand.  :)

And in the small world department... I asked our waiter, Jason, what his "day job" was, and he said he was a student at VCU - which is my alma mater too.  I mentioned that I was back down for a few days from New York City, since my parents had retired down here from Fairfax a couple of months ago.  Well, it turns out that he also grew up in Fairfax, and we had actually gone to the same grade school, St. Thomas More - albeit ten years apart.  Then the backserver who was clearing the other table behind us, spoke up and said that he had also grown up in NoVA, and had gone to one of the neighboring high schools too.

As for "Weight Watchers" - You can actually do it online now.  They even hold virtual meetings.  I'm not doing it right now, but I know many other who are.  And the virtual meetings are also a convenient way to check in if you're not able to make your "in-person" meeting that week.

In any case...

I'm about to head back over to Steve's.  He has some shopping to do today - as do I now that I think of it.  And then we'll be heading to his sister's house tonight for yet another Thanksgiving gathering.  I'm looking forward to seeing his clan again, especially his mother since her health issues seem to be resolving themselves quite nicely recently.  She's even playing piano again apparently!  We may also catch a movie this afternoon if time and craziness permits.

DR FJL - on last night's Numb3rs the character played by Wil Wheaton was Miles Sklar, the wealthy comic mogul.  It took a while to see any resemblance to Wesley Crusher and DH Richard was surprised when I pointed it out.

Darn I missed this.  I thought I had programed the show into the new DVR system.  Now I need to see what other shows I missed.

Well I continue on my BlameMattH-athon--just bought a Onkyo 7.1 sound system for our new high-tech TV and DVD player.  Looks like I got a pretty good deal, as these things go--it lists for over $600, Amazon had it for around $450, and I got it for about $325.  Not cheap, but not as bad as it might have been.  Let me live in denial if it's available somewhere for $199.  :)

Jane-

I hope that you and Keith had a Great Thanksgiving. What did you guys do?

Thank you.  I hope you did as well-details please :)

Bryan was going to come here.  Since he has a paper to write & I wanted to get away & rest my wrist, we decided to go there at the last minute.

I didn't rest my wrist but we did have a lovely time.  Bryan, as always, cooked us up a great gourmet meal.  He planned a nice dinner but nothing during the day for me to munch on.  I asked if we could get something light.  Bryan instead  innovated us with wonderful appetizers.

I began the day with hot chocolate and then progressed to three kinds of hummus with baked pita chips & sliced carrots.

We then had a white bean dip (whole beans) Followed by sliced apples with cheese.

Dinner began with pumpkin soup with potatoes & leaks & Bryan's fresh onion broth base-oh so good & salad.  We then progressed to rice cakes, cooked like risotto & then rolled in a bread crumbs, panko & parmesan mixture before frying.  These were topped with a delish capinata (eggplant).

For dessert Bryan threw together an interesting cake.  Bryan rarely uses a recipe & I find it amazing this cake came out.  He saw some cherries, the kind used in fruitcakes & figured he would make a fruit cake of his liking.  He tossed in pumpkin, flour, eggs, soda, ginger, fruit, rum & I don't know what else.  Then he topped the cake with a cream cheese rum frosting & topped it with grated coconut.  I'm still eating leftovers.

It was a fun day.

Yes and it seems to have helped.  He is laying on the pad I bought for him in the kennel.  He just seems to want to stay close to me for whatever reason so I pull it next to where ever I'm sitting.

DR Kerry - Continued Foot/Leg Recovery Vibes to You.  Good to know that you're Healing is coming along nicely.

-And just how much longer does your doctor say you have to wear a cast?

Thank you!   I actually get to use a small lace up support on my ankle now at night, so I don't have to sleep with the boot on which was like having a 20 pound brick duct taped to my foot.  I should be able to start out the new year with no boot or anything.    Keep your fingers crossed.

Good vibes to all for everything on this lovely day.

DR Ron Pulliam (who probably won't get to read this until Monday). Getting a new computer is loads of fun exploring and finding new things about the operating system. But it IS a major pain to get things to handshake in a nice way, and Vista isn't very nice with old equipment and old programs. It prefers things that are brand, shiny new. Stupid and irritating, but these places need to make money by selling new equipment periodically and I guess this is how they do it.

Congratulations! I am sorry I am leading you to the poor house even with these deals, but you will be thrilled with this unit. There are so many sound choices with even something simple like mono that I'm almost catatonic when trying to make a selection of sound domains available.

I spent the first part of my afternoon finshing SPELLBOUND. It isn't NEARLY as good as NOTORIOUS (made the next year), but I can see why it was a major hit in its day, and it's still a fun movie to watch.

The Criterion disc is a bit grainy but very good, in great shape as a transfer.

I also listened to some of the audio commentary on selected chapters but the commentator (who is NOT Dr. Drew Casper; Criterion knows better) was rather dry and pedantic.

Since I had no T-Day leftovers, I was going to buy a turkey breast to cook for tonight's dinner, as well as all the ingedients for stuffing.  However, last night when I was the grocery, I noticed that they had fully-roasted turkey breasts in their deli.  Soooo, rather than go through all that trouble of cooking it myself; I bought the the pre-cooked turkey breast, took it home, and Angel and I had a wonderful dinner - without any of the work.

And of course they built that dam especially as a set for 1957's THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN, but then left it at the request of the locals.

Au contraire, Jrand, it was built in the Thirties as a backdrop for Alfred Hitchcock's SABATOUR; but the locals left it hoping it would draw a few people to their gaming tables.

(((FJL))) it sounds like a very fitting memorial for your cousin. Even thought it is under sad circumstances, I hope you have good visits with your family members.

My DF Stan, who is 75, decided after his wife died about ten years ago; that he wanted to set aside the money to throw a big party / wake at Elk's Club after he passed away (Snacks, two drinks each, and out the door).  This year he decided that he would rather attend the party himself.  So, on his 76th birthday he is going to host his own pre-wake.

Elmore, you should go out this very day to the neares hardware type store, and buy yourself a Carbon Monoxide Detector.  The stove may not decide to wait until Monday to try and kill you!

Sherlock Holmes books:
I mentioned this some time ago in another context, but there's a fun read out there called The Case of the Philosopher's Ring, where Sherlock goes up against "the wickedest man in the world," Sgt. Pepper cover boy (among other accompishments) Aleister Crowley.

If you want to read a very clever non-Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes story; then don't bother reading SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE TITANIC TRAGEDY.  Dumb...Dumb...dumb.

I worked with one of my Closer producers last week and he told me a story about carbon monoxide poisoning.

Two of his friends, who who recently became engaged, decided to take a trip together. (Las Vegas, or some other touristy destination?) They stayed at a Mariott. Their room had a carbon monoxide leak, but they didn't notice anything because they'd had a few drinks and came back to their room and quickly passed out. They woke up a few times and felt kind of dazed and confused but blamed it on the alcohol.

The next morning, room service discovered them and thought they had OD'd on drugs and called 911. Everyone assumed that was what it was but they were able to finally being them back to conciousness. They almost died! And they will be suffering the ramifications for years. I'm sure there will be a lawsuit involved. This was the only room that had the leak!

So needless to say, I'm VERY glad that you have the detector, Elmore! That's something you don't want to mess around with!

I went to 5 different stores scoping out the prices on chest freezers -I'm just looking for a 5.0-5.5 cu ft. I am amazed at the cost to deliver the little thing in town. Anyway, it's starting to look like my best deal with delivery and disposal of the old one is Home Depot.  Now I need to make sure I have a place to plug it in downstairs - the place I wanted to plug it in won't work.  I don't think they changed out the outlet to a grounded one in the room I want to use...hmm better go check. If it's good to go I'll head to the store and put in my order while I know they have them in stock.

We got new rugs once and could not decide between the two in the store, so we took them home to see how they actually looked in the house.  The true test, however, was what our Basset thought.  She sniffed both, laid down on the one she liked and then peed on it for good measure, so we knew that  was the right one!    :)

I  have been watching "Only When I Laugh" (based on "The Gingerbread lady") over the last week or so.  It's taken that long because it pushes a number of buttons on a number of different levels-  even more so than when it came out in 1981.   I know it is still chic to bash Neil Simon, but he was brilliant and changed everything about the theatre (and movies, too, for awhile).   Jimmy Coco steals the picture, along with the brilliant Joan Hackett.   Kristy MacNichol is pitch perfect (as I always thought she seemed to be).  Marsha Mason gets it right where it counts, and her pairings with her then husband were perfect.  No wonder people bashed them!    The timing of Neil Simon's lines is very delicate (kind of like Noel Coward--- you either get it right, or you don't).  All of these people had that timing.  Walter Matthau and Matthew Broderick were also particularly adept with Mr. Simon's words.   It is such a shame that so much of the cast (and at relatively young ages) of this movie has been decimated by cancer and AIDS.  James Coco, Joan Hackett, David Dukes and many extras.

Heck, even Kevin Bacon got in on the movie in one scene.   And of course, there is David Shire's perfect score.  They also did a nice job of making New York in the fall look lovely and promising and yet become increasingly dark and menacing as the plot progressed.     Definitely worth watching for the great lines (even through the hard parts).  I would have loved to have seen Maureen Stapleton do the part on Broadway and Elaine Stritch do it in London.

I was right. The room where the FOOD freezer should go doesn't have a grounded plug in, so I went into another room in the basement and the best way to make it work is to move the treadmill to a place where it's actually usable. (It was in a spot now where I couldn't use it without hitting my head on a vent)  So I moved the treadmill and walked for 10 minutes. I could have gone longer, but I'm really out of shape so I thought I'd start very slowly. So, I have the added bonus of being able to do a treadmill workout in the basement.

I was going to go get the freezer tonight, but decided I'll just wait until tomorrow.

You should have seen the "help' our Basset (Wee Baby Doris) gave when it came time to wrap presents or read the paper.  It seemed to be her cue to just lie down right in the middle of the wrapping paper or newspaper.   Quite a character she was (as Yoda might say).

Kerry, I thought Joan Hackett had died of a heart attack.  I didn't realize it was my the same condition that has cursed too many of my family members.  She was far, far too young & such a pleasure to watch.  Keith and I were very sad when we read of her passing.

So tell me have you've been practicing on that dance machine in the wee hours before the mall closes? Or not? (tee-hee) Couldn't resist.

AND pictures too!!! I'm not green, nope, not me.

Had an interesting evening of different entertainments.

I began with the Blu-ray of SPIDER-MAN 3. The movie is jammed packed with too many villains, too much back-and-forth feelings of betrayal and then devotion. I got VERY tired of these oh-so-changeable emotions at opposite ends of the spectrum. Yes, a comic book movie, but still wearying. And, of course, no human body could ever withstand the bumps, scrapes, and crashes that the people in this movie undergo, often without a scratch or bruise.

And the mythology of the villains just doesn't seem consistent. The "Sandman" seemed to melt away and then came right back bigger than ever.

Topher Grace was very cute as the last of the formed villains (that is, before he grew the fangs).

It was my pleasure to do what I could. Honestly, I'd rather have suffered through the torment *I* had when I set up my new receiver two weeks ago than even THINKING about packing one back up for a return. Argh! That must have been PURE TORTURE.

And then came TORCHWOOD.

Good episode but the teasing of the gay audience in particular until we got our payoff was REALLY excruciating.

However, the payoff was more than worth it. Quite a beautiful and poignant love story. I just wish we could have had a lot more of it and less other stuff (though, of course that WAS necessary).

Good Evening!

Well, we never made it out of the apartment today - well, Steve's apartment.  The Richmond Men's Chorus is having their Christmas Concert next weekend, and Steve is the rehearsal and performance pianist for the group.  They are performing a choral arrangement of Brahms' "Geistliches Wiegenlied" - one of my favorite pieces of vocal chamber music (it's original score for alto, piano and viola).  Well, they're performing the number with a clarinetist instead of a violist, and "they" just realized that the scores they were sent did not include an actual (transposed) clarinet part.  Well... Since I'm familiar with the piece, and since a good chunk of the piece repeats, I went ahead and Finale'd the clarinet part.  -And got a good "reminder" of what it's like to deal with Alto Clef.

However, I did get a pretty good lunch out of the deal.  Steve had baked some Turkey Legs (not leftovers - he even brined them), and came up with a sort of free-form casserole with carrots, celery, onions and rice.  Quite good and healthy.

In any case, I was more than happy to help out - the clarinet player had sent a "I'm having a meltdown" e-mail earlier in the day to Steve and the leader of the RMC.  *And I also had a good time "proofing" part by playing along with the computer on Steve's new-ish baby grand piano. :)

After putting the Brahms' clarinet part to rest, we headed over to Steve's sister's house for yet another Thanksgiving dinner.  Not all of Steve's family was there, but a good chunk of them were.  It was great seeing all of them.  And, yes, Steve's mother is doing quite a bit better health-wise now.  In fact, there were a few moments tonight when she seemed to be doing really well - gotta love those meds!  ;)

It was the typical Austin family spread: Smoked Turkey (Steve's father does wonderful smoked turkeys), Baked Ham, Fried Okra, Green Beans, Baked Yams, Cranberry Sauce, Rice, White House Rolls, and Gravy (I don't think I've ever seen such a large container of gravy in my life!).  And for dessert: Pecan Pie, Apple Spice Cake and some "Eggnog Puffs" from Costco (basically cream puffs filled with Eggnog flavored cream).  Oh!  And Steve's father also brought over some homemade Scuppernog and Muscadine Wine.  Tasty!

I realized today that I never bought a DVD version of the Le Miz 10th Anniversary Concert.  I have the video, and I love it, so I thought I would treat myself.  I had no idea that it was out of print.

E-bay has copies going for between $56.00 to $150.oo for Buy It Now.  Amazon has used copies going as high as $299.00.

Wow!

Hmm... I think I may actually have an extra copy or two of this on my shelves. I know I have at least two copies of it on VHS.  -It's what happens when you have a friend who works for a local PBS affiliate and they need to clear out extra premiums.  Well...  I'll check to see if I do indeed have an extra copy or two, and if I do, I'll get it in the mail to you.

*However, I also think I just saw the DVD of the Anniversary Concert at Virgin the other night.  They just repackaged and repriced most of the Les Miserables recordings, so...  -Once I'm back in NYC...

I am really curious to see how Catharine Tate will do as the doctors companion in the next series. They are bringing Martha back. That could get intesresting.

A freind sent me a clip as a cheering up bit. The BBC had a program called Children in Need and they had a small skit from Doctor Who and it had David Tennant and Peter Davison. It was nice to see Peter again.

BTW, the Christmas special should be interesting. It is about the Titanic. It is called Voyage of the Damned.

Head on over here tonight and pick me up, and we'll go to one together. That's a great plan!

I wasn't able to go tonight.  I ushered for a tour of Late Nite Catechism and afterwards, I went to a birthday party for one of the cast members of Nite of the Living Dead! The Musical!  That was fun, but I just got home about a half hour ago...too late of The Outback. ;)

Right now, I put in the second disc of the 2-disc DVD for the movie "Hairspray" and I'm watching the documentary, "You Can't Stop the Beat: the Long Journey of Hairspray."  It's quite fascinating and informative.  It's most of the people who worked on the show and not just people talking about the people who worked on the show. :)

See how late I was able to modify this message:
