Title: APPLE BROWN BETTY

Well, you've read the notes - you HAVE read the notes, haven't you - the notes were your oyster or your shwarma or your meat ball sandwich, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently making Apple Brown Betty.

I will shortly be off to Toyland, and after that I have a few errands to run.

Good morning.
I am here. I will be off to the world of Borders books shortly.
I find it unseemly that only DR elmore and I have posted, and it's only a bit after 8 on the east coast. . .

Welcome to new reader DR DA NIECE.

More thoughts to DR FJL.

Sounds like DRKERRY is coming along on his foot....and I certainly agree with him that Neal Hefti's score for HARLOW is lovely - though at times anachronistic....sort of like Carroll's hair and makeup.

In the meantime, Steve has one of his cable-TV-radio-music stations on: Jazzup Broadway.  Quite the eclectic selection of music.

"Once upon a time you had to go to the theatre to find the best tunes. Hear what happens when the finest jazz singers meet Great American Songbooks."

So, far we've heard two versions of "Send In the Clown", as well as two versions of "Ol' Man River" - Al Hirt and "Screamin'" Jay Hawkins (that rendition certainly woke us up!!!).  However, I think the coolest track so far has been Shelley Manne's version of "I Could Have Danced All Night".

Good Morning Jo Jo-

Can one get JAZZUP BROADWAY on the Internet?

I'm checking into that now.  I think it should be, but I'm not coming across a proper link at the moment.

*Although, right now, they're playing Renée Fleming's version of "Hello, Young Lovers"... ???

DR ArnoldMBrockman - "Jazzup Broadway" is part of the UrgeRadio network.  So far, the Google searches I've done just bring up other cable systems.  However, I'm also coming up with hits for MTV's radio service too which is now joined with Rhapsody.com.  So... ???

I spent about 40 minutes this morning finishing PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END. It's 30-45 minutes too long and not a very satisfying movie experience. Every character has his own agenda (and there are A LOT of characters), so it makes for a very splintered type of storytelling that I almost never like. The movie made a billion dollars worldwide, and I'm sure if they would work it out, DIsney would make another one in a heartbeat, but wouldn't it be interesting if instead of trying to top themselves every time out with more length, more effects, more everything, they'd go in the opposite direction and strip the movie down to its basics. It could make an exhilarating 90 minute little adventure with just a few core members of the cast.

This afternoon, I'll be exploring all the bonus features. The first disc has the blooper reel. All the other featurettes are on disc 2. I suspect this will take me most of the afternoon.

I'm also going to rewatch the first 15-30 minutes of the movie now that I have the plot worked out in my head since I thought the movie got off to a very jumbled start.

Tonight, of course, there's new episodes of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and BROTHERS & SISTERS.

There's a late NFL game in my area, so that means COLD CASE will start late and I won't be watching.

I think there's a new DEXTER tonight, but I'll have to check the listings when I go back down.

Not for me, much to do...I need to put plastic up on the bedroom windows.  It's really helping in the livingroom.  This morning when I went to get the paper, I noticed all the air coming in around the door, so while still in my pjs, I got the foam tape out and went around the door. It makes a huge difference.

I also have to hang miniblinds in the kitchen. I couldn't figure out why that window and another feels so exposed...well duh, I cut down 8 trees last spring.  So windows that were blocked in the past are no longer blocked. That means new window treatments will be in order and miniblinds are the easiest.

Then I'm going to sign up for Curves. Usually this time of the year you can get a registration fee waived or at least discounted or even free to the end of the year.

Finally I'm going to go get a freezer.  At least I can schedule the delivery.

And then....I need to vacuum the whole house and I want to set up the book shelves in the basement and empty all the boxes of books.

Then it should be time to watch TAR

I've finished one chore this morning.  All of the television-based DVDs have been moved into my room, and the space that was cleared has been reorganized for our main DVD collection.

It says something about me, that the two television series that are best represented (with more to come) are Good Eats and Doctor Who.

Der Brucer has now caught the spirit, and is trying to alphabetize our show tune CDs.  The sound of a crash or three coming from the has been entertaining.   ::)  (And he calls me a klutz!)

While reorganizing things, a TOD occured to me:

What books and such do you find yourself returning to again and again, as reference material?

These don't necessarily have to be non-fiction books!

For myself, with that cookbook collection of mine, there are a few I keep coming back to over and over:

James Beard's American Cookery
Mastering the Art of French Cooking, by Julia Child, Luisette Bertholle, and Simone Beck
Joy of Cooking, by Irma S. Rombauer and Marion Rombauer Becker
The Fanny Farmer Cookbook, by Marion Cunningham
The Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook, by Matt and Ted Lee
Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles Cookbook
and Culinary Artistry, by Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page.  (This last is more a book of lists, giving what ingredients pair well with each other, what ingredients are often found in certain cuisines, that sort of thing - quite valuable whenever I'm trying to "invent" a dish.)

Good Afternoon!

I'm back from Carytown.  I did some shopping for Steve - he needed a few Chrstmas garlands from Lane Sanson, and I just window-shopped and strolled.  The streets and stores were practically empty which was a little surprising, but I guess everyone is either travelling, resting or cocooning today.  -Especially with the very gray weather.

And now I think I shall head back to my parents' place and look through some boxes to see if there's anything I want to bring back with me.

Well, if you have a Mac, you can use Delicious Library (http://www.delicious-monster.com/).  With the aid of a webcam to capture the UPC barcodes (or keying them in manually), the program then searches a couple of internet databases and puts all the pertinent info into a pretty cool user interface/database.  There's even a visual representation of your library so you can browse the covers of your books, CDs and video games.

I had some entertaining viewing this afternoon.

I began by rewatching the first hour of PIRATES 3. It all made much more sense once I knew what everyone was talking about. A well written movie wouldn't need the viewer to take another pass at the beginning for understanding. I think this is a weakness.

BTW, the transfer is sharp but flesh tones veer toward brown and except for a few bright scenes, it's a very dark, greenish-toned film.

Speaking of SALLY, I wish Warners would release both SALLY and SUNNY on DVD. Yes, they're ancient relics of early talkies, but they'd be great to see again. I keep an eye out for them to come back around in the reotation at TCM, but they don't show the early talkies as much as they used to.

Next, I watched all the bonus features on the two discs in the PIRATES set. Most are puff pieces, but there was one really fun segment on the nine pieces of eight that have to be collected before the election of a new Pirate King. Great getting background on all the pirates connected to those relics.

I had about an hour left, and since I didn't want to start WITH A SONG IN MY HEART without finishing it, I instead opened the MURDER SHE WROTE Season Seven box set and watched the first episode.

This was a really good mystery with guest stars George Maharis, Carrie Hamilton, Kim Hunter, George Hearn, and Michael Beck. And I always like a story when Jessica is accused of something and is working overtime to clear herself of charges. In this one she was being sued for wrongful death.

Well, I need to be going.  Yesterday, I was planning on cleaning up some stuff to make room for my loveseat to be removed from my house (my mom gave it to friends of hers...and I don't really want it) but I didn't get as much cleaning up done as I should have. ::) So, I need to do that.  They should be coming to get it sometime tomorrow.

I also have rehearsal for Nite of the Living Dead! The Musical! today, starting at 4:00 pm until some as-yet-undetermined end time. :P And I need to do some laundry.  I have some clothes that will be used as costumes for the show, and they should actually be washed before they're made dirty again. ;)

Sunday evening greetings!  DH Richard and I are back from a delightful day in Cincinnati.  We went to church, out for lunch, then to see Enchanted, which we both found...enchanting.  I loved it from the opening Disney castle graphic to the last note of the music accompanying the credits.  The pop-up book motif was wonderful, too.

Have you noticed that can't order their chocolate covered cherries through the catalogue?   I have sent See's to various people after they moved from the west coast and have also managed to get a few midwesternerers hooked on See's.

I haven't noticed, but then I don't eat chocolate covered cherries. I noticed the catalogue doesn't have the dark chocolate covered peanuts.  The stores don't always have them either.  Can you always get the cherries in store?

I've always found that the catalog never has everything listed that's available.  However, their website is pretty complete, but the customer reps on their 800# also have some specials and "secrets" from time to time.  *And I also believe they've been offering the "pick your own" assortments for a few years now.   I know I picked my own assortment a few years ago.  :)

Yup, this is truly the first time I've loved a job since I graduated.  I'm actually doing the same basic thing I've been doing all along, working with toddlers.  But the difference is that this time I'm in an amazing place where we teach using a system inspired by an Italian childcare philosophy, and it's wonderful.  It suits me perfectly.

How are you and your family doing, Jane?

Good evening.

I didn't exactly do everything today...instead of putting up plastic, I took apart, washed and put back together all the windows in the kitchen and dining room and instead of dealing with the book cases, I scrubbed the kitchen and bathroom floors, ran the vacuum in the rest of the house and put together a couple boxes for recycling.  I did buy the freezer. They are going to deliver it on Tuesday. I tested the outlet I'm planning to use and the ground works, so we should be in business

I've been taking some cough drops and I just made myself a hot cut of Lemonade with cloves and cinnamon sticks.  I’m hoping that will help.

I'm just getting grummy.  I know it takes time to heal but it's been a week and I'm tired of this.  I want to go back to normal.

JR:  I actually got the last one in the store (the one I returned), and I don't think we want that one anyway, even though had it worked we probably would have loved it.  I think we need something a bit less bulky--our TV is in our bedroom.

Jose:  your post about "once upon a time" made me think of the Tony Bennett doc I just watched and reviewed.  Did you know that the A-side single he was promoting in 1962 was "Once Upon a Time" from All American, which he fully expected (and wanted) to be a Top 10 hit, until some record exec went bonkers over the flip side and told Bennett he should be pushing that instead.  It was a little tune called "I Left My Heart in San Francisco."

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES had some good scenes tonight. I enjoyed the show. I liked the Andrew story although I hope this means he's not being written off the show. Richard Chamberlain had a nice introduction. The Gaby story looks like it could go to some tension-filled places. Adam's stalker needed a lot more to pique my interest. So far she was just irritating.

Two days ago the Vixter and I watched the 1968  version of Romeo & Juliet, the one starring Leonard Whiting & Olivia Hussey , directed by Franco Zeffirell.

The rating is now PG... I remember when it came out it was rated M and that the stars were not old enough to actually seeit in the theatre

The Vixter quite enjoyed it.  She is a big fan of West Side Story and I was pleased with how she immediately made the connections....

OH! The Capulaets and the Monatgues are the two gangs!  Oh the masquerade party is the dance at the gym... etc

Yesterday we watched Hamlet, the Mel Gibson version.... not my first pick, but it was the only version Blockbuster had handy...

it was probably a good choice for her her though.. the Branagh version is nearly twice as long

She enjoyed that as well.. she was shocked at how many of the lines she knew "as sayings"

"THAT's from this play too?!!!"

The local one strike could have been over last week, since I believe that what will be settled this evening or tomorrow will be the exact same terms of last week - or close enough that they could have not done all the posturing and behaving like schoolchildren last week and could have toughed it out and saved themselves Thanksgiving week.  In fact, I'll go so far as to say that the eventual settlement terms will be very close to what was proposed weeks ago.

Following the laughed-out-loud episode of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, I finally got around to the dvd of HAIRSPRAY, cranking up that DTS 6.1 soundtrack enough to shake the walls a little.  I had spent Thursday night watching the special features on disc two, and I'm still not through all of those features!
A few thoughts: the cut song, "I Can Wait" is gorgeous and Nikki Blonsky sings it brilliantly, BUT, it is sooo wrong for the moment in the film in which it would have fallen.
Michelle Pfieffer's two villainous roles this year should earn her at least one Oscar nomination.  I adore her Velma in HAIRSPRAY.
I know a lot of people don't like Travolta's Edna, but, I certainly love her.  It's great to see those first tentative dance steps onto the tenement steps and blossom into the "Mama's got to let go" exclamation at the end of "Welcome to the 60's."  I honestly believe that Chris Walken's Wilbur loves this Edna, in no small part due to the casting.
Nikki Blonsky's debut, though not as awe-inspiring as Jennifer Hudson's last year, is indeed a marvel, and every bit as brilliant as Rikki Lake's prior take on the role.
I still CANNOT believe that the man who put out THE PACIFIER and CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN choreographed AND helmed this HAIRSPRAY.
Marc Shaiman's arrangements are filled with little quirks - "La Vie en Rose" in "Timeless to Me" and are quite full-bodied in DTS sound.
I think that the transfer is brilliant, too.  A bit lighter than what I saw in the theater, but eye-popping with color and choreographed moves.
It's such a pleasant surprise to find a musical film which NEVER tries to deny the fact that it IS a musical.

DR bk thank you for your interest and invite to join your board!

I love exclamation marks! I blame it on my profession ... marketing. In my small world everything is exaggerated especially when I am trying to write a complete sentence. I am a proud mother of two young men - ages 19 and 17. One in college and one a high school senior. I live in Pittsburgh. I am Da'niece of Danise (I changed my name to protect the innocent).

I'm new to this type of community. It's a little awkward for me to communicate without talking but I'm learning. I am grateful to my dear Auntie who graciously exposed me to your board on her last visit to the 'burgh. And of course, DR td for being td. (this sounds like an Academy speech!).

DR DaNiece - never hurts to have some sort of acceptance speech prepared; you never know when (or what) you might win!
