Well, you've read the notes, the notes went about their business in an orderly way, and now it is time for you to post until the lovelier than lovely cows come home.

Speaking of which, I should be in bed.  It's just one of those nights when sleeping isn't easy.   :P

Maybe if I try I can get a couple more hours in, and slap that snooze button a few times.

Like I say -  :P

Good morning, all!  I have a big day of writing on these Men's Chorus charts. My intentions in Ohio were good, but I did not accomplish there as much  on the charts as I'd wished.  Today I'm scoring "Let It snow."  I'm also still waiting on a budget question concerning a vibraphone to finish a nearly-finished chart.

I did finish reading last week Seth Rudetsky's funny novel, BROADWAY NIGHTS, which I recommend to one and all, and I'm now in the middle of a mystery by Laura Lippman, WHAT THE DEAD KNOW. I've also noticed that now the taxes on the estate are paid and the Macbeths are no longer an essential part of my communication, I'm sleepng much easier.

TOD:
  These pieces make me weep:
The finale of Britten's opera PAUL BUNYAN
      Chopin Ballade in G-minor
      "Nimrod" from Elgar's "Enigma" Variations
Barber's "Sure On This Shining Night" and "Knoxville: Summer of 1915"

  These make me laugh:
Almost all Offenbach (always a big smile if not a big guffaw)
       Bernstein's opera-bouffe CANDIDE
Several variations in Britten's "Variations on a Theme By Henry Purcell" aka "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra"
       Prokofiev's "Lt Kije"
Shostakovich's arrangement of "Tea For Two"
Charles Ives' "Variations on AMERICA," especially in William Shuman's brilliant orchestration

Yes, DakotaCelt, the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic in April, 1912.  Similar to what happened to the cruise ship this weekend, but with far more tragic results.  Also, this weekend's cruise ship was sailing off of Antartica.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up.... And will be off to the airport shortly.  I'm getting there a bit early, which I don't normally do.  However, since today is still part of the Holiday Rush to get home, and since there's rain here and in NYC, well...  Hopefully any delays I encounter will be minimal.  I've have a great time back here in Virginia, but I really do miss NYC right now.

And as for the end of the strike, well, I do hope it does end this week.  However, I'm one of a large group of people who will probably be feeling the effects of the strike on a sort of delayed basis: the subs.  -Whether it is sub musicians, dressers, merchandisers, heck, even sub crew people.  I have a feeling that I won't be called into fill-in in a pit on a semi-regular basis for a couple of weeks as the "first call" people will be "trying" to make up for the funds they lost during the strike.  Thankfully, I still have a bunch of day work booked for December, but I have a feeling that January could get interesting.  But then again, January is always interesting.  ;)

I haven't read anything from Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday. That will take a while but I do see from these posts that our Dear Vixmom needs a new job.

Vibes of the highest order to you, my dear. This is my last (partial) week at the office and I have much to do before I leave (at noon on Thursday) so I will slowly catch up on the weekend but I don't think I'll be in the living room much, at least for today.

Later, gaters.

I got back late last night from the memorial for my cousin in Framingham, MA late last night.  She was only 62.  There were about 250 people there.  Members of the immediate family (with whom I had spent most of the morning) had suggested that I sit in the front with them, but I somehow preferred to sit towards the side where the pictures of my late cousin were displayed.  Besides family functions, she and I had been in touch almost constantly by email, and it's amazing that email can make you feel as close as being there sometimes - some people (including some of my family)  feel the computer age has depersonalized communication, but I feel in this case it kept some parts of the Boston-area and NY-area families in regular contact.

It turned out that at some point during her last days, my late cousin, as she knew she was on the verge of passing away, had specifically chosen the room where the memorial was held.

Many thanks for the HHW vibes and wishes of comfort for my family.

Rainy and cold this morning.  I must run some errands, and think about the TOD.

Although songs that ALWAYS make me cry are:

Wildfire
Me and Little Andy

One song I remember hearing driving home for lunch and then having to buy when I went back to work at the Ben Franklin Store:
"I Think I Love You" by The Partridge Family.

My father bough lots and lots of records when we were growing up. There were very few hits from the Hit Parade that we didn't have. I can remember hearing "Volare" for the first time and making sure he was going to buy it. We eventually had the original, the Dean Martin, and the McGuire Sisters versions.

There were two major record stores in the little town where I lived, but I remember mostly my dad buying records in the record department of a big department store in Charlotte (these were the stores that had listening booths; oh, such memories!). He drove to Charlotte every Tuesday on business, and in the summer and on holidays when I was home, I went with him, so I often bought records (show albums, of course) in Charlotte, too. Only, by the time I had money and could buy my own music, I'd go to Record City which had a great cast album and soundtrack section.

45's that i had to buy immediately and listen to over and over:

One Bad Apple, sung by the Osmond Brothers, really caught me and I think that was one of the first 45's I ever bought and listened to again and again.  Others that I remember well are Turn the Beat Around (Vickie Sue Robinson), More More More (Andrea True), Sugar Sugar (The Archies), Don't Cry Out Loud (Melissa Mancehster), Born to Be Alive (Patrick Hernandez?)

There are many where I bought the album, though.

Good morning all!

Vibes to DR Vixmom for continued employment!  I understand totally!

Vibes to DR Jose for travel!

Vibes to DR TCB—I hope your feeling better!

Vibes to all others just because!

I was a real grump last night.  I was tired of coughing all day and I just felt like I was in a bad mood for no real reason.

Thanks for the phone call, DR Jane.  That cheered me right up.  I guess being in the house by myself for so many hours isn’t really good for me.  I need to hear the sound of another voice.

I hate to say it but I think I am more then ready to go back to work.   :o ;)

We always had lots of 45's around our house.  Mostly C & W because my dad love it.

I do remember the Osmonds and bought most all of their albums on 8 track.   That was back went 8 tracks were the thing.  I regret that I did that because it's old tech now.  I don't even know where they are or where I would even get an 8 track player if I could find them.

I should have bought albums.

DR FJL "Born to Be Alive" was indeed by Patrick Hernandez - and my friend Brad and I performed a jazz routine to that song on The Jerry Lewis Telethon one September....I am sure Donations went UP during those minutes.

DR MATTH I think you will like the extras on WITH A SONG IN MY HEART, lots of photos of Jane Froman and lots of "what happened next" information.  And some nice interview footage with the woman who runs the Froman Museum in Missouri and some friends of Jane's.

WOD:  If I may quote myself--this final line came from a poem I wrote in high school, the rest of which I can't recall, but which was part of the packet which won me the National Council of Teachers of English award, which got me a free-ride scholarship to the school of my choice (so why in h*** did I choose the University of Utah?--long story):

the last damnable lagniappe in Pandora's box

TOD:
I bought my first 45s at Valu-Mart in Bellevue, the suburb of Seattle, not the mental institution, though it was hard to tell them apart sometimes.  :)  My first two 45s were "Scarborough Fair" by Brasil '66 and "Hey Jude" b/w "Revolution" by some band with an apple on their label.  My mother forbade me to play "Revolution" when she was in the house.

Good Morning! once again!

Well... So far, my flight has been delayed twice.  It was originally scheduled to take off at 11:15am.  Then it was displayed - not announced - that it would depart at 12:00noon.  Then it was displayed - and, again, not announced - that the flight would take off at 11:50am.  -And there's a suspicion the departure time may get moved up again.  -Blame the rain in NYC.

I think the first 45 rpm I purchased was the Carpenter's "Top of the World."  From Caldor's, which was a regional chain sort of equivalent to what would now be Wal-mart.  They used to have these bins behind the counter with the 45's, arranged by hit status - the top 20 or whatever.  And each week they'd publish a list, and you would order by the number.

TOD:

My first memories of music on "record" were 78s...my grandfather lived with us and he had a radio console.  The top lifted up.  In the side were storage bins for the records.  My favorites were Les Paul and Mary Ford ("The World is Waiting for the Sunrise" and "Whispering").  I was four or five years old.

I remember listening to, and doing, "The Bunny Hop" with my parents and their friends in our living room.  That was one of the big radio hits of the early 1950s (don't pin me down and expect a year, 'cause I cannot remember THAT well).

On the radio, many things caught my fancy, but my first favorite female vocalist was Gale Storm.

To this day, I can remember how "connected" I felt to the whole world by listening to AM radio.  What FM there was offered classical programming, to the best of my recollection.  AM radio had a slew of stations, and my favorite was WFBC-Greenville, South Carolina.  You'd get short news/sports/weather at the top of the hour and then you'd have a DJ taking phone calls or simply playing the top tunes of the day.

I got my first hi-fi (!) record player in 1959...a Christmas gift from Santa.  There were some 45s including a Bing Crosby one featuring "White Christmas" backed with "Adeste Fidelis" in Latin.  I LEARNED the song in Latin by listening to that 45 over and over and over.  There was also a Crosby 45 with Hawaiian songs on it, including "Hawaiian Wedding Song."  Another 45 was an Andy Williams recording.

Needless to say, this stuff got old rather quickly.

I discovered "film soundtracks" a few years later.  The first soundtrack album I ever bought was "Exodus".  Twas but the beginning of a lifetime obsessions!

There were a number of places to buy records in Greenville.  The main store in downtown was called Mary's Record Shop.  It had the booths like the one in Charlotte that MattH described.  It also had the highest prices.  I found cheaper recordings in cut-out bins (Georgia Gibbs and "The Hucklebuck", anyone?) in drug stores (I found "Bells Are Ringing" and "The Wizard of Oz" in such bins).

The biggest thing to happen in Greenville in the early 60s was the opening of a huge retail store called J.M. Fields.  They had an entire aisle (on both sides) of recordings.  MAN!  They even had several bins devoted to soundtracks and Broadway.  Their prices were really good, too.

And then, one day, in 1963, I happened to be with my mom at the Wade Hampton Mall (less than a quarter mile from the neighborhood we lived in) where she bought groceries at Winn-Dixie.  I was roaming around and discovered a new shop had opened -- Carole's Record Shop.

I went in.  I found the soundtrack section.  I also noted that the prices were REALLY good (relative to my allowance).  Carole's is where I bought almost all my records for the next seven years, including "To Kill A Mockingbird" (my first purchase there).

Ah, memories.

Toward the end of the 1960s, while I was still in college (circa 1968 or 69), Carole's relocated across Wade Hampton Boulevard (a four-laner) from the Mall.  It was a specially built store with its own parking lot.  The store was run by Mr. and Mrs. Green.  They had a daughter -- Carole -- who worked the store, as well.  I entered the Navy in 1970 and was never around Greenville much after that except for short visits.  At some point in the mid-1970s, my mom wrote to tell me Mr. Green had died.  I don't know how long the store remained open (or even if it is still there or not).

I'd pick you up!  The few times I've been sick enough not to be able to drive, I've really appreciated those who would think to offer an "outing."

The friend whose call I'm expecting today has suggested that we incorporate a visit to a mutual friend who is recovering from surgery and not doing too well.

Well, Thelma and I are going out tomorrow when I go back to the doctor.  I also think we are going to go lunch before the week is over and I go back to work.

I can't wait to be able to drive again.  I know I didn't go very far or often but when you can go anywhere at all on your own, it's a PAIN!  :(

I'm so confused about this stuff.  I want a HD TV but I don't know what is best.  I like the idea of a flat panel but I'm told they get screen burn.

While all HD TVs are flat panel, "screen burn" is something that CAN happen if you buy a plasma set (the others don't have that "scare", to my knowledge).

I've had my plasma since February and have NO screen burn at all because I paid attention to everything I could find on how to avoid it.  After the first several hundred hours of operation, it ceases to be an issue, if what I've read is correct.

As for the newly refurbished, remodeled and expanded Richmond International Airport... It's actually quite nice.  However, they are still working on the road into the airport and terminal area, so it was a bit tricky trying to figure out which signs and arrows to follow when my Dad dropped me off.  The main entrance area looks like a miniature version of Washington-National (DCA).

I also have to wonder why the walk from the Check-In area to the Security Screening is so long.  I had been walking enough that I began to wonder if I had made a wrong turn somewhere, or if I had somehow walked by or around the Security area.  And I didn't spot too many assistants or golf carts either to help those who might need some extra help getting to their gates.  Additionally, most of the concessions and food stands are BEFORE the security check point, so, as I purchased my bottle of water with my breakfast this morning, the clerk asked me, "Do you have enough time to finish your drink before you go through security?"  -I guess the plans for the "new" RIC were made before all the TSA regulations.

I also have memories of my parents' old 78s and in fact their old, old phonograph, which was housed in the top of our ancient, blond Silvertone t.v.  The needle was long gone, and I used to put my fingernail down on the records (mostly the old Edward R. Murrow "I Can Hear It Now" series) and listen to the sound emanate from my finger.  :)  "Oh, the humanity...."

DR DANISE I will only echo what others have said.....I decided against a projection television system because of the necessity of changing the bulbs every so often.  I don't know how much better my Panasonic LCD will be, but so far so good.

As for the Topics of the Day...

I think the first couple of 45s I bought were "Le Freak", "Reunited", "Good Times" and "Heart of Glass".  I also ordered a bunch of K-Tel albums much to my parents chagrin.  Oh, thats what C.O.D. means?!?!?  ;)

My parents had a bunch of records, everything from Classical to Sinatra to the Beatles.  They also had a lot of boxed sets from Time-Life, RCA and Reader's Digest.  From what I remember, they had a fondness for "101 Strings" and the "Montovani Strings" too.

Store-wise, I too remember Caldor's, as well as the Vality in Ledyard, CT.  -Or was it called "Vality's"?  New London? Groton? I remember buying the soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever" there.  Oh! -and, of course, we always got great prices when we would buy records on base.

Well, the plane is now here, and they just deplaned, and whole turnover/turnaround process has begun.  And it looks like they just want to get everyone on board just as soon as they're ready to go - we may only end up making it into JFK just 25 minutes later than originally scheduled.  Not too bad.

In any case, I should power down so that I can power down and get ready to board.

TOD:

My first records I bought were at Record Barn in Grand Forks and my first album was the Magic of Abba and Blondie.  However my first tapes were some KTEL titles, Genesis, Phil Collins, and Air Supply. I was also on a country kick for a while and I have a lot of Alabama and a couple Reba McIntire albums on tape Vinyls and 45s were on the way out when I was a kid and cassettes were big.  I was more odd and would often use my tape player to tape a song I would hear on the radio. Grand Forks had a station that used to play sides of an LP late at night.  Not the best quality but doable for listening on a not so good tape deck in the car.

However I do have the Chieftains first album on the Claddagh label that I got on ebay and  a 45 of one of the songs that was released by claddagh (it is rare). However I do have most of there albums on tapes and or CD.

Some of the first 45s I had included Catch a Falling Star by Sinatra, Boogie Oogie Oogie by Taste of Honey, several tracks from Xanadu, Greatest American Hero by Joey Bishop, New Attitude by Pattie Labelle.

My mother had a lot of country music which I was not big on.. I did not mind Patsy Cline but the others just did not interest me. She has a lot of vinyls in this genre.

My grandmother had a Lawrence Welk album and some Canadian Brass. After her and my grandfather moved from their apartment I inherited the Canadian brass albums. Good stuff.

I also have some polka music and a fairly old Chet Atkins vinyl. I would say  1950s.

However my audio tape that had the track has been eaten and destroyed by what i call the evil beast aka the tape player.

A few other songs related to the soaps..

The 1980s were big for songs that were on the soaps and then making it big on the charts. DOOL and Santa Barbara were known for using pop music for montages. One reason I suspect you will never see old eppies of Days and Santa Barbara on soapnet due to copyright relating to the songs.

Freinds and Lovers - Gloria Loring and Carl Anderson
Think of Laura - Christopher Cross
Tonight I Celebrate my Love - Roberta Flack
All I have - Beth Nielsen Chapman

and those are the ones I can think of right now. Many of the shows were notorious for using wrapup montages at the end of the week and it would have a pop song connected to them.

Other pop songs at the time included:
Broken Wings
Lady in Red

Always is also used a lot on a couple of shows

I can even claim that I have a Tom Jones album, some Beattles, GoGos, and various groups from the 1980s. I can safely admit that I never owned a Michael Jackson album. I liked a couple of his songs at the time but was never a fan. I prefer his sister Janet.

STupid question.... Who is Bobby Goldsboro?

DR DakotaCelt .. I don't think any question is stupid. Thanks for asking. Here's what his web site lists:

Bobby Goldsboro’s career has been a remarkable evolution. This multi-talented performer started out in the early sixties as a guitarist with the legendary Roy Orbison. During his three years with Orbison he traveled all over the world and even toured with The Beatles.

In 1964 Bobby started his solo career by recording the first of a string of sixteen top-forty hits, “See the Funny Little Clown.” One of his first concert bookings had him opening for the Rolling Stones on their first U.S. tour! More million-selling hits followed, setting the stage for 1968 and the classic, “Honey,” which became the largest-selling record in the world! “Watching Scotty Grow,” “Little Green Apples” and “With Pen in Hand” have also become classics.

There's a song called "If You Could See Me Now," which is about someone from heaven telling you what it is like there. I can rarely get through it. I think of my mother.

Dinners with my in-laws were interesting: anything could be suspended in jello at their house.

No, but I can still do the routine, and Brad probably can, too.  We rehearsed it enough!  ;D

I am now caught up. It took less time than I thought.

We had a very nice Thanksgiving. Simple, quiet and happy.

On Saturday evening Anthony, Rose (his mother) and I played Trivial Pursuit. I won.

On Friday we visited with a dear friend and helped him set up his IONiTT USB10 turntable. We have been looking into buying. Since Alfred bought one and isn't so technically adept we got a chance to see how it works and how easy it was to set up. We will most likely have a turntable by the end of the year.

I'm listening to (what else) the BBC on line. As I mentioned last week, the computer on Long Island is on the way out. Getting on line is a chore so we did not go online from Wednesday until Sunday when we returned to the Apartment in NYC.

Rose may buy a new computer but if I buy a new one before she does we will take our old system out to Long Island. Our computer is newer and better than the system out there now. It runs Windows 98 and has a 3 gig hard drive and is as slow as the proverbial molasses. It's also 10 years old. Oh, well, electronics don't last forever.

Busy, busy morning.  Lots of make-work implemented recently by folks who ought to know better.

Oh, well.

We have a database in which all pertinent contract data is stored.

Whenever an invoice arrives, we have traditionally entered the Purchase Order number, and then we processed the invoice for payment.  The database does all the rest.

NOW we have to put a cover letter on the invoice payment that gives ALL the information about the invoice (ON the invoice) and the PO (in the database).

No matter how much work data systems can alleviate, humans will find a way of doubling the workload on the employee.

TOD:

I never bought '45s, and really shouldn't have bought too many albums (didn't start buying my own music till around 1991), but having too many great used music stores near me back in the day meant that the record collection is just a wee bit overflowing. Loved listening to Golden Books on records as a tot, though... does that count?

Some songs that make me laugh: "10,432 Sheep," "Adelaide's Lament," anything by Tom Lehrer, Allen Sherman, Victor Borge, or Anna Russell.

Some songs that make me smile: "Cherish" by Madonna (I didn't just admit that, did I?), every single friggin' song in "She Loves Me"

Some songs that make me weep: "Mr. Tanner" by Harry Chapin, "Send in the Clowns," "Yerushalayim" by Abie Rottenberg (composer for an Orthodox Jewish group called Journeys, not to be confused with the "Don't Stop Believing" group), "Mama, Look Sharp," "Bring Him Home" (Dudu Fisher on the original Israeli Les Mis cast recording) .

Hear, hear! "And this, my lovely child, is your garden!" *bwah!*  :'(

The opening of "Children and Art" ("mama is everywhere/she must have loved him so much")... just make sure that the Kleenex is nearby.

I'll be watching the game from my Mom's couch. Go Steelers! It's raining and cold here--so I keep telling myself. The game should be sloppy. I don't know if anyone watches football but our family loves it.

Fingers crossed that the Steelers come to play tonight.....chow.

Heidy-Ho out there to you all you guys and gals, Jacks and Jills, Joes and Janes!

I used to do most of record buying  at Bill's Records (a Phoenix tradition), Walllich's Music City (yes, we had one) and Newberrry's basement.   Songs I HAD to have right away were anything by Petula Clark, "This Diamond Ring" (Gary Lewis & the Playboys) and the Box Tops' "Neon Rainbow."  I mainly had a thing for musicals and soundtracks (movies and TV) and still do, I guess.

Songs that make me cry?  I'm not so sure.  I'll have to think on that while I read the posts.

Loads of songs make me cry, often depending on my mood.

In high school my sister’s boyfriend, the one she should have married, fixed my up with the brother of a friend.  Turned out this guy was my friend down the block in elementary school, until he moved away.  Because of our history we stopped by his house to see his parents.  While there he picked up his guitar and played PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON.  There I was with big tears slipping down my cheeks.  I was terribly embarrassed but they all had, oh isn’t she cute, expression on their faces, which embarrassed me even more ;D

I'm so confused about this stuff.  I want a HD TV but I don't know what is best.  I like the idea of a flat panel but I'm told they get screen burn.

The LCD that you're looking at is a "regular" LCD, DR Danise. No problem with screen burn-in with LCDs. Only older plasmas need worry about that, and even those worries are minimal. Don't worry about the term "rear projection" on that product description. The Sony Bravia line is their regular LCD platform.

This is a lot of set for the money, but you need to consider if the room you're going to put it in is dark or bright, what signals you're going to feed it, etc. Do you have digital cable, satellite dish, regular cable, or just rabbit ears? What kind of DVD player do you have (i.e. what kind of cables to you use to go to your current set)? How far away are you going to sit from the TV?

All of these questions are important to consider when buying a new HDTV because what you're looking at might be more than you need. You could save $1000 by buying a set with a slightly lower resolution that's still HDTV but more suited to your needs depending on how much you'll use it, what kind of room it's going into, and what equipment you're going to use with it.

Lunch ran very long, so I didn't have as much time to watch stuff this afternoon as I had planned.

I began with finishing WITH A SONG IN MY HEART. Nice film and overall a good transfer apart from those few instances of color registration that I mentioned yesterday.

I watched the three featurettes on WITH A SONG IN MY HEART and enjoyed them even with Dr. Drew Casper's participation. Sue me. He makes me laugh with his earnestness. (You're right; Miles Krueger could AT LEAST comb his hair before appearing on camera. He looked as if he had just gotten out of bed.)

Actually, remembering, I don't remember much color registration problems on Song, whereas on The Girl Next Door they are blatant throughout (the matrices being off, resulting in a green halo around most people and objects).  What I do remember about Song is that the color, for the most part, was very good until the last third, when it went brown for a while.

Next, I watched another MURDER SHE WROTE episode. This was one of the Jessica-less episodes, but at least it WAS a murder mystery. Guest stars included Robert Reed, Vera Miles, Ken Swofford, and Keith Michell as Dennis Stanton.

If I remember correctly, there are only four Jessica-less episodes in the 7th season, so I won't have to be irritated very often with Angela's non-participation.

David (I know everyone calls you Coleslaw and beyond but I call you by your Christian name :-)

The IoniTT USB10 is very easy to set up and use. The thing that I thought would be most daunting was the tone arm and the weight (it comes relatively unassembled). Anthony took care of that and I installed the software. It was all very quick and easy and we were up and running in minutes. I admit part of the learning curve was eased because we have and use Audacity, the software that comes with the turntable so we knew what we were doing. After making a couple of configuration choices (it states what those choices should be in the manual and you have to have your turntable plugged into the USB port before those choices show up as choices) we were able to record and edit and save as waves and mp3s. One of the songs we recorded was a 45 (the turntable only records in 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, if you have 78 rpm records, you record them on 45 and then use Audacity to change the speed) of a record by Linda Lee. Our dear Tom in Australia may know the song. It's called You Treat Me Like a Boy. It was in Anthony's collection. It's a cute comedy song from the 60s. I don't have the record here in front of me to give the label and composer, etc.

If we lived closer we could come over and help you set it up (no, TCB, that's not a euphemism) just like we did with Alfred.

DR Danise,

I went back and read more about that Bravia you linked us to. This is a new style of Sony rear projection. It's not the LCoS style that I was familair with, so it does use a bulb like some other rear projection sets (my Samsung is a rear projection WITHOUT a bulb. It uses LEDs instead to furnish the light).

The pictures on rear projections can be every bit as outstanding as on plasmas and LCD flat panels and they're better with black levels and feature no motion blur that the flat panel sets sometimes deal with. But you DO have to replace the bulb, and that's a $200 bulb. It's not the kind of TV you want to leave on for hours at a  time just for background noise.

Every HDTV has drawbacks of one kind or another. None are perfect. But you definitely need advice before you buy and need to consider the questions I asked earlier before you make any decisions.

My copy of The Ridiculously Expensive Mad arrived today and it is indeed in near fine condition--in fact, I'd have graded it near mint.  The only flaws I can see are some very minor chipping to the bottom of the back side of the dustcover (which is enclosed in one of those protective mylar things, so there shouldn't be any more of that), and some very minor toning to the front endpaper.  Other than that, it looks great, with all inserts intact.  What a trip down memory lane.  I still remember my birthday that year--my Mom picked me up from school and gave it to me to look at in the car on the way to the orthodontist.  Memories, pressed between the braces of my mind.

Book gradings are oddly phrased but very specific.  Mint is not a book term.  So, near fine would describe what you're talking about, although it sounds closer to fine - then there is very fine (which can still have minor wear) and then there is As New, which is without any wear or faults.

I somehow doubt I need that big of a set in my small house.  I did some more looking and I am really looking at this:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8473653&productCategoryId=abcat0101001&type=product&id=1186005983963

It's on sale for $799.00.  I think it would do everything I need it to do except fit in my current TV stand.  I would just have to buy another one.

My deepest sympathies DR FJL.  I missed offering them to you before you left for the memorial.

And then I'll be watching the adventures of the Doctor and Martha!  (Doctor Who Confidential documentaries narrated by Anthony Head this time.)

I've declared work for the day done, and am now watching Twin Peaks.  Steak was just what the doctor ordered.  The doctor and I have had several of these occurances where we both have the same food.  Strange.  Odd, even.  Or even odd.  If you're odd can you be even?  If you're even can you be odd?

Did you manage to get to the ticker tape parade when Lindy came home?

I got home from work, I had a bowl of leftover chili, I took a nap, I refused to get up just because der Brucer came into my room announcing the DVDs for Doctor Who - The Complete Third Series had arrived.  That's how tired I was.

A couple of hours was all I needed, and I feel better now.

Then Dr. Who - The Complete Third Series had better watch out!

T.O.D.

I had children's records on 78 when I was young.  The only ones I remember are HOWDY DOWDY IN THE ENCHANTED(?) FOREST and Amos and Andy perform THE LORD'S PRAYER.

The first 45s I remember buying myself were PLEASE DON'T JUST STAND THERE by Patty Duke and SWEET TALKIN' GUY by The Chiffons.

Most of my music money went to OBCs and Soundtracks which I usually purchased at the record store in the basement of the old Rust Building in Tacoma.  I could spend hours there, just going through the bins looking at the records.  The first album I bought was ANYTHING GOES with Hal Linden.

Then I joined Columbia Record Club and Lord knows how much crap I bought!

I loved Gloria Loring on DAYS.  And I loved that song.  I also loved Brenda Benet on DAYS and Iwas very sad when she committed suicide in real life.

Does anyone else remember the soap opera NEVER TOO YOUNG back in the mid-Sixties.  It starred John Lupton, Tony Dow, Dack Rambo, and Patricia Connelly.

I am off work today and tomorrow. I'm trying very hard to clean and put up my holday decorations but this board is addictive.

I am taking the boys out for lunch, shopping and to the Steelers game at Heinz Field. I have on-field passes and tickets for the game and of course, the boys snatched them. I'll be watching the game from my Mom's couch. Go Steelers! It's raining and cold here--so I keep telling myself. The game should be sloppy. I don't know if anyone watches football but our family loves it.

Fingers crossed that the Steelers come to play tonight.....chow.

Puff used to make me cry too

Song that makes me teary...."The Way You Look Tonight" especially the Fred Astaire version.

It would be a euphemism if I set it up for David.

My parents had a bunch of records, everything from Classical to Sinatra to the Beatles.  They also had a lot of boxed sets from Time-Life, RCA and Reader's Digest.  From what I remember, they had a fondness for "101 Strings" and the "Montovani Strings" too.

My parents were listening to this stuff, too---Ronnie Aldrich, lots of music where the melody was played on the piano in a low register, almost like you were playing with one finger. It used to bug me---"I could play that!" etc. They would also listen to Robert Goulet, Tony Bennett...all the easy listening music. And htis was when they were in their 40's! I can't imagine listening to that stuff even now!

And now my mom listens to Michael Buble, Josh Groban, Clay Aiken... all these contemporary singers-- and she has to tell ME who they are! LOL!

I thought tonight's show was a bit of a letdown. Especially marie. She was so good last week. But this week she was extremely mediocre.

And while Mel B was still great this week. I actually agree with the judges. I was expecting more. Since she is so good i just thought she could do better.

I guess the highlight of the night was helio's freestyle. But that is mostly because julianne knows exactly how to choreograph a winning routine. but his lifts were fantastic. And you could tell he worked hard on it.

I sort of see helio winning.  And really think it would be laughable if marie won after her performance.  I don't really get it. She was so good last week.

Thank you, DR Matt for the info.

I somehow doubt I need that big of a set in my small house.  I did some more looking and I am really looking at this:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8473653&productCategoryId=abcat0101001&type=product&id=1186005983963

It's on sale for $799.00.  I think it would do everything I need it to do except fit in my current TV stand.  I would just have to buy another one.

I'm guessing this would suit your needs admirably. It still has HDMI ports which future-proof the TV for any later DVD/cable box/satellite dish linkage.

And if you get it, I (and others on this site) would be glad to offer advice on setting it up with the equipment you have.

The hint has been made that they have been involved!  A couple of episodes back, Jack asked Ianto to stick around, and in the last episode Owen was sniping at Ianto about what's been going on.  We just aren't getting to see the footage (another reason to get the DVD?   :o   ;D)

And when he was passed out during that alien robot attack, Jack laid a BIG kiss on him (that was like episode 4 or 6).

HAIRSPRAY looks just sensational on Blu-ray, and it had a DTS-Master Audio track (the high def version of DTS), so it sounded as good as it looked. I watched the whole thing.

Then I saw that the Blu-ray has that picture-in-picture commentary (called BD-Java) with the director, the female star, and the two producers (Neil and Craig), but I didn't try to watch the entire thing again, so I'll do that  tomorrow and watch/listen to their commentary.

HEROES had a great episode tonight except for the Micah story which I didn't care about at all. The rest was exciting, and the hour was over before I knew it.

Good Evening!

Back from seeing "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium".  What a strange and strangely beautiful - and surprisingly touching movie.  I'm not really sure how it would be categorized - drama, comedy, adventure, etc.  I guess "fantasy" would be the closest thing to it.

Dustin Hoffman's Mr. Magorium seems sort of like his "Rain Man" all grown up, but with lots of Wisdom.  Natalie Portman is cute as always, and Jason Bateman, is well, Jason Bateman - which is OK with me!  And Zach Helm, who plays "Eric Applebaum, the Hat Collector" is quite endearing.

It's not a perfect movie, but it is what it is.

And the opening credits are cool too, as well as the closing credits which list the various departments according to what they do.  For example, the Producers are under the category of "People Who Make Sure We Get Paid."  Cute!

BK - The score is by Alexandre Desplat with an assist by Aaron Zigman.  I may have to buy the soundtrack.

I think one of my favorite lines from the movie tonight was/is:

Life is an occasion.  Rise to it.

-Which I'm guessing comes from another source.   ???

DR Jason sends his best to everyone, and, actually, once he hits the road, he should have a bit of time to check-in and post here from time to time as he traverses a good chunk of the country in a van.  All he has to do while he's on the road is the show, so no day job or night job to get in the way.

There is a link to the show at TheatreworksUSA.org, but the "Take Your Class To This Show" finder doesn't seem to be working.  I've entered a few of the cities I know he's playing, but nothing's coming up.  ???

OH!

And on the way into the movie, we happened to spy Mr. Philip Bosco and Ms. Laura Linney.  I believe they were attending the DGA/SAG screening of "The Namesake".  -I have to say that Laura Linney practically glows in person - what a beautiful woman.

And as for songs that make me Cry:

"New Words"
"My Brother Lived In San Francisco"
The whole final scene/sequence in Violet
"Stop And See Me" (Weird Romance)
"What'll I Do?"

Barber - "Knoxville: Summer of 1915"
Poulenc - "C"
Fauré - "Puisqu'ici bas toute âme"
Fauré - "Cantique de Jean Racine"
Debussy - "Noël des enfants qui n'ont plus de maison" ("Christmas for the homeless children", or more properly "A Christmas song for the children who have lost their homes" (in World War I)
Britten (arr.) - "Down by the Salley Gardens"

As for songs that make me Smile:

"The Hokey-Pokey"
"Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" - And practically ever other selection in Ella Fitzgerald's "Harold Arlen Songbook" collection.
"They All Laughed"
"For the Longest Time" (Billy Joel - which reminds me, I haven't listened to that "Innocent Man" album in a while)
"You Can't Stop The Beat" (Hairspray)

Bolcom - "Amor"
Bernstein - "What a movie!" (from Trouble in Tahiti)
Rossini - "Duetto Buffo Di Due Gatti" (The Cat's Duet) - I loved playing this on recitals.  I would "chase away" the two cats with a good bark from the piano bench.
