Well, you've read the notes, the notes were pro-management and pro-union, and now it is time for you to post until the striking cows come home.

Half a day. A meeting at 10 and at noon it's time to go. I'm doing laundry and then later this eveing we will venture back to Chelsea Cinemas to see A Star is Born (the Garland version) with a pre-show by the lovely and green (green before Wicked) Hedda Lettuce.

They will probably be showing the film via DVD (the last time we went to a movie there we saw The Poseidon Adventure and it was from DVD) but Anthony, despite his enjoyment of Miss Garland, has never seen ASIB on the big screen.

I was hoping that final pages for my project would be on my desk when I arrived this morning. Silly me. Well, if I don't finish by noon the project moves up the ladder, actually, to my supervisor. Scheduling in pre-pub pushed the project around and it got behind. I'm usually finished by now and the final dotting of Is and crossing of Ts is a short process but this has dragged on longer than necessary.

Sorry to hear about  the sound issues at the show, bk. This has been a routine complaint of mine for a decade, and it only seems to be getting worse. I think the iPod-wearing crowd has just shot their hearing completely to heck, and can only hear sounds blasted at Cape Canaveral type levels.

I saw Eden Espinoza as Elphaba on Broadway lo these many years ago, and enjoyed her tremendously, but it can't possibly be easy to maintain an interesting take on that role for years on end (somebody write the woman a better show than "B'klyn," fer-cryin'-out-loud!)

TOD:
Musical seen the most times: "Rent," 15.5 times (second-acted the show once), although I don't think I've been to the Nederlander in 7 years.
Movie: Rocky Horror Picture Show - some 100+ times. Don't you dare judge me, I owe my marriage to that movie!
Straight play: "Cymbeline" at the Pearl Theatre - six or seven times in full, and first or second act probably another five or six times (I was interning there at the time, and was completely in love with the show)

*sigh* "but I was young and stupid then, I'm old and stupid now" - TMBG

Good morning, all!  Snother day of writing, and this will occupy mos of my life through Monday, I would guess.  This last men's chorus chart is endless or seems so; it's 13 minutes long, which is a lot of bars of music.

TOD:
When the film TOM JONES was released in 1964, I saw it every night during its week-long run.
6 performances of  the original cast of SWEENEY TODD including the final performance of Cariou and Lansbury, which was quite an event.
Every performance (5-7 performances) of the City Opera production of Britten's PAUL BUNYAN, still one of the most brilliant productions I've ever seen.  The tv broadcast badly screwed it up and I've never forgiven PBS and City Opera for their lousy attempt to be adventurous with the backstage cameras.

I've seen Sweeney a number of times many with Cariou and Lansbury but also with Hearn and Lansbury and other casts. I have also seen many professional productions of Gypsy and Forum.

In 1982 when Torch Song Trilogy was running on Broadway Equity had free tickets quite frequently. I was just back in town after a 6 month road tour with Sesame Street Live. I was unemployed and living in a sublet on E. 65th Street. I went to Equity every day and I saw Torch Song probably 15 times that summer. I also saw Blues in the Night at least 5 times (again with free tickets from Equity). It was playing at the long gone Rialto Theatre which was a smaller space at 1481 Broadway between 42nd and 43rd Streets. It had Jean Dushon, Debbie Shapiro (before she added the Gravitte), Leslie Uggams and Charles Coleman. I loved the show but it was not a success.

Before it was the Rialto Theatre it was the site of Hammerstein's Victoria Theatre. In 1916 the Victoria was demolished and replaced by a movie theatre called the Rialto. In 1935, that theatre was torn down and a new structure was built on the site, featuring a smaller Rialto as well as shops, offices, and a TV studio that later housed Geraldo Rivera and Montel Williams' programs. By the '70s, it was operating as an adult film house. In February of 1980, it became a legit house. In 2002, it was demolished. Another loss of Broadway and entertainment history.

I saw the film version of West Side Story many, many, many (that's 3 manys) times as a teenager. I LOVED that movie. I wanted to be a Jet and dance with Eliot Feld. He was an early movie crush though I don't know how many movies he made after WSS. I still see him in my neighborhood. His dance company/teaching facility Ballet Tech is still operating in New York.

The Rialto didn't have a long, modern anyway, history of legit performances. When it was built  in 1916 and then rebuilt in 1935 the space was a movie house and according to Cinema Treasures (a favorite site of our BK) it was a great Art Deco palace. By the time I arrived in New York (August of 1980) there would only be three shows left to play the Rialto (it went legit in early 1980), Marlowe, a rock musical about the life of playwright Christopher Marlowe playing in October and November of 1981 (it was not a success and I didn't get to see it). The World of Sholom Aleichem (another non-successful show). I didn't see it because at that time I was in a garbage can (literally) playing Oscar the Grouch in the touring version of Sesame Street Live. When I got back to the city in July of 1982 Blues in the Night was running (for a short time) and I got to see the show, as I said, about 5 times. There was not much more theatre business for the Rialto and it became a television studio for a while and a Cineplex Odeon but the last incarnation was as a pseudo theme park attraction called "Cinema Ride, the so-called motion simulator that rocked and rolled its patrons hydraulically to the accompaniment of 3-D action movies (taken from an article in the NY Times from 1998). The building housing the theatre was torn down as part of the redevelopment of 42nd Street and it's now a large office tower with a Chase (IIRC) ATM facility, a food shop and other "amenities"

Thursday morning greetings!  Now I remember what I don't miss about working evenings - getting home at 10pm and having to leave at 8 the next morning.

TOD - the professional musical I've seen most is A Chorus Line - 4 times in its first life (twice in NYC, twice in Cincinnati), and once in its current incarnation (last preview before opening in Oct. 2006).  I also confess to seeing Cats 3 times on 3 different tours in Cincinnati.  The first time, it made no sense; the second time, we knew it wasn't supposed to have a plot; and the third time, we sat in seats reserved for the hearing-impaired and I watched the sign language interpreters for most of the show.

DR Julie - can you tell us anything about your movie, or is it all hush-hush?

Yes, absolutely - thanks for asking!

It's called Clear Blue Tuesday.  It follows the lives of eleven individuals on one Tuesday each year for six years - starting on 9/11 and ending on 9/11/2007.  It's not really about 9/11 per se, -- it's about the lives of these individuals and the directions they took after 9/11.

The actors in the movie are people who were actually affected in some way by 9/11.  The story is part true stories of each of them -- the script grew out os many hours of the cast talking about their personal stories and improvising from there. The characters are all based on their portrayers.  And the story is told, in part, through original songs that were written by the cast.  The cast consists of professional musicians and singers - people who are known in NY if you follow those circles, although would not be known to the greater population.

For example, Jeremy Schoenfeld, who in addition to acting in the film wrote a number of the songs for the film, is a fairly well known musician -- he just did a couple of solo shows at Birdland, and is the composer/lyricist of the musical DRIFT, which played at NYMF in 2006.   Or Greg Naughton (son of James), who with his band has played in venues nationally.  Or Erin Hill, who plays harp for the Off  Broadway show The Fantastiks (scored for piano and harp) and plays weekends at the Ritz Carlton.  She is also a songwriter and her music has been used in films and on TV.  Cassandra Kubinski is also an award-winning singer/songwriter who regularly performs in NY, and has been on TV and in films.   Same thing with Brother Love.  And Asa Somers is lead singer of a pretty popular rock band, and has been on Broadway, most recently in Grey Gardens and Taboo.  And Becca Ayers is currently on Broadway in Les Mis.  Singer songwriter Julie Danao-Salkin was on Broadway in Lennon, Rent and Saturday Night Fever.  Etc etc.  11 principal cast members all together.  And they are wonderful, -- I can't wait to see their performances on the screen when the scenes are all put together. It was great watching them live.

There are also a number of well-known theater stars who did cameo appearances - participating in one scene or one number in the film.  These include Julia Murney, Kelli O'Hara, Christian Campbell, and others.

My job for the film was Location Manager.  It was the first time I did this, and it was a pretty hard job.  I was basically responsible for finding and securing the locations for all scenes that were filmed.  It is a low budget indie movie, so my budget was very small, and this made the job much more difficult.  High budget movies can "buy" the use of a location - a loft, a restaurant, whatever is needed.  I had to basically convince people to let us film in their businesses or homes for free or very little money.  It was quite stressful at times.  I also had to be at the location, usually before everyone else (read: VERY EARLY IN THE MORNING - and you all know how Julie hates very early in the morning) - and stay till clean-up.  Because as Location Manager, I was responsible for the location, and any issues that would arise.  Such as where can we set up food.  Where can the crew eat.  Are there bathrooms (not always easy in NY with a lot of outdoor locations).  How to dispose of garbage.  And lots of negotiations -- for example, can we stay till 10pm even though we promised we'd be out by five.  I was also responsible for making sure we had shooting and parking permits for each location.  So I was frequently at the Mayor's Office for Film and Broadcasting obtaining these permits for each location.  And I got to watch the filming and see how everything works and how it all gets done.  And it was fascinating.  And our wonderful director, Elizabeth Lucas, was very kind and supportive and appreciative, and it was a great pleasure to be able to work with someone who is a really good person in addition to being a talented director.

The location I'm most proud of, and that everyone was completely amazed by, was that I was able to get us the use of 7 World Trade Center for our final scene in the movie.  Larry Silverstein, who owns the buildings at Ground Zero, just rebuilt 7 World Trade Center and it's a beautiful modern tall building right at the Ground Zero site.  The top floor - 52nd Floor, is not yet leased out.  It's a wide open space, not yet divided, and when you step off the elevator, it is floor to ceiling windows with the most amazing 360 degree views of Manhattan and beyond, and when you look directly down on one side, you're looking directly at Ground Zero.  We used this space to film the final scene of the movie - an art gallery scene where the whole cast comes together at the end of the movie.  We brought in paintings by real NY artists that had a 9/11 theme.  It was really beautiful how we transformed the space.  Our art director did a great job with that.  And it really made the movie come full circle to be able to film the final scene in a WTC building overlooking Ground Zero.

We just recently finished principal photography, although I think there are a couple of touch up shots and filling in that will still probably need to be done.  And the editing process will take some time.  I'm not really sure of the time frame at this point, but I suspect it will be the latter part of 2008.

If we're talking about paying to see a film in a theater, it would be SLEEPING BEAUTY which I've seen in a theater somewhere between 5 and 10 times.

Overall, THE WIZARD OF OZ would win hands down if we factor in home video and TV showings. I've only seen it twice in a theater.

As for legit shows, it would probably be OLIVER! or FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, but I don't honestly know how many times I've seen each: too many in the case of FIDDLER which is a masterful show but one I NEVER want to see again (except maybe the movie a few more times in my lifetime).

Cassie Kubinski played Mirette in the Jones-Schmidt show when I scored it for Goodspeed.  Lord, that was 9 years ago! She's been through college by now.

I, too, watched "Bones" last night (recorded Tuesday evening).  Apart from being sensational-looking in high def, it was a very good show, with some touching moments, to boot.

After seeing Ryan O'Neal's face light up when his daughter entered the trailer at the prison where the family was having a Christmas get-together, I couldn't stop myself from wondering if he was imagining -for the sake of proferring a genuine reaction  -- that she was his real daughter, Tatum, from whom he is estranged.

I was watching it in standard definition recorded off analog cable. I didn't want to see it in SD any more.

I certainly understand THAT!  Of course, I'm pretty tired of networks airing re-runs in SD when the original airings were in HD.   Even the HD channels on ComCast air some of the HD shows in SD and it ticks me off to no end.  I feel like I'm being cheated.  Of course, the argument would be that I am not being cheated since they consider the transmission of any format over those channels to be HD transmissions regardless of whether they fill the 16 X 9 ratio.

To give you all a feel for how "tired" it was at my house last night, I was setting my TV to record "Project Runway" and "Life" at 7 p.m.  And I was well into bed by 9 p.m.

The days have been long, it seems, even though the sunlight portions grow shorter and shorter.

I've never heard of this. I don't think Comcast is to blame. I'm guessing the engineer at the station forgot to throw the high def switch and that's why it was broadcast in SD. Happens here occasionally with almost all of the various stations, and I get VERY bent out of shape when it does. I complained so much to the ABC affiliate that the engineer gave me his direct phone number at the station to call if it ever happens during prime time.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Movies (in a theatre):
"E.T." - four times
"Poltergeist" - four times (maybe even five or six times)
"On Golden Pond" - three times
"Like Water For Chocolate" - At least five times - It was one of those films I would bring friends back to to see with me.
"Cinema Paradiso" - I saw the original version at least five times.  -Although, I only saw the longer "Director's Cut" once in a theatre... since I didn't want to go into convulsive bouts of sobbing again in public.  ;)

As for Musicals and Plays...  Hmmm...
The LuPone Gypsy three times.
"Hairspray" - Four times - three times in NYC, once in LA.

...And I would walk into and stand in the back for the shows during the Sondheim Celebration at the Kennedy Center since I was a rehearsal pianist for both Sweeney Todd and A Little Night Music.  -But I actually paid for my own house seats for Sunday in the Park with George that summer - Raul Esparza was an amazing Georges/George.

Oh... And each time I would go back into Mamma Mia! on the road, I was required to audit the show.  However, after the third or fourth time, I was able to audit the show from the audience (and still get paid for the audited performance).  :)

DR Julie - Thanks for the movie info.  I'm looking forward to seeing it, and have heard good things about from some of your cast members (Becca, Asa, etc.).

-Frankly, if I had somehow ended up working on the movie, I don't think I would have been able to make it through your final "gallery" scene without breaking down in tears every couple of minutes.  Heck, I still get emotional whenever I head down to the Financial District and start to sense that I'm near Ground Zero.  However, it looks like "Clear Blue Tuesday" will finally "help" me with that.  Sounds like a true Labor of Love.  And of Honor.

I am so happy to have finally found a DVDr (via Ioffer.com) of the wonderful Maureen O'Hara/Eric Stoltz TV movie from 2000 titled THE LAST DANCE! Hurrah!

I had taped it when it originally aired on NBC  or CBS or whatever and watched it many times and cried each and ever time! I loaned it to my sister. When I got it back I found that my brother-in-law ($#!&*) had taped a football game over it!

So for the last several years I have been trying to find another copy and just yesterday I hit paydirt!

Of course it would be nice if an official DVD release of it would occur, but that has yet to happen.

Hi folks!

I was here before but didn't get the chance to post.  All heck broke loose.

I received my medical "release" and the doctor but on there I couldn't do anything (even data entry)--all he checked off is that I could "sit".   Well, Hello, do you think they are going to let me go back to work and just sit and smile at people? OY!!!!

He also put on there I am on narcotics (err over the counter Tylenol is a narcotic?  :o ) for pain.

He dated my return to work as 12/15/07 and then crossed that out and put 12/03/07 (est).

I called and told him they won't let me go back to work with that kind of report.  I was told that he is concerned about the crackle in my lungs (totally different from what he said when I was in his office) and he really didn't want me to go back to work until he sees me again next Tuesday.  Now I'm not sure when I'm going back to work.

Oh, and I feel fine, BTW.  I still have that cough but I am taking my meds.

 ??? ??? ??? :( :( :( :-\ :-\ :-\

Sorry to grouse but I needed to vent.

Ah, yes. The Wizard of Oz, though it was a long time before I saw it without commercials. We watched it on television every year.

So did we.  I always lost it when Dorothy said goodbye to the Scarecrow.  It was my annual cry.

I remember my surprise when we got our first color TV and Dorothy opened to door to OZ.  I never knew (until then) that OZ was in color while our world was in B & W.  That was rather neat.

And still is, in my humble opinion.   :)

TOD:  As much as I wanted to be among the ones who professed to seeing "The Sound of Music" hundreds of times, I believe I only managed abuot six viewings of the film in its initial theatrical run.

That said, I worked as an usher during summer/fall/early winter of 1965 and the one film I saw the most while working was "The Yellow Rolls-Royce", which I viewed straight through about 13 times.

Home video is something else again.  I've held annual marathons over the years during which I watched all the "Rocky" films, all the "Die Hard" films, all the "Lethal Weapons" films, all the Astaire-Rogers films, all the "Star Wars" films, etc., etc., etc.  I couldn't even begin to speculate how many times I may have seen any of those films.

Over the last decade, the films I've watched more than a few times include "Meet Joe Black", "Field of Dreams" and the "LOTR" trilogy.

My grandfather bought a color TV console in the early 1960s.

We used to go to his house on Sundays for dinner, and stay through "Bonanza."

It just occurred to me, reading Danise's post, that never once was it suggested that I might come over and watch "The Wizard of Oz" in color during its annual TV showing.  I know he was aware I would be watching it on our b/w TV.

I didn't see it in color until 1965 when my dad finally broke down and bought a color set.

Funny the things that suddenly occur to you....

What vixmom (and maybe you, Danise) needs to find is a government job....county, state or federal.

Once you get tenured, you have to do something seriously wrong to be let go/fired.

Of course, it helps if you like your job and co-workers.  One should always apply oneself to be the best possible employee in one's position that one can be.

re: DANCING WITH THE STARS.

DR Cillaliz, yeah i sort of heard about the news about helio and his fiancee.

It is so odd. Because i went to see my sister last night. and i was telling her how i had seen helio talk about his fiancee (on THE VIEW). They had asked him about it and he had gone on to say how supportive she was. And julianne had commented how she would teach the woman to dance for their wedding.

And my sis was like, "um they broke up" (helio and fiancee). It seemed so odd to me since he had gone on and on. But she (my sis) said that he had told whoever was interviewing him (didn't hear where my sis heard this) that he just didn't want to make a big thing about it at THE VIEW. So he just played along.

OMG how awkward! (and i totally don't get why someone just didn't tell them not to ask him this question!).

Oh my gosh, I'm paging though this cook book and so many recipes are just like Mom made!

For example:

Cucumber Salad
2 medium unpeeled cucumbers, thinly sliced
1/3 cup cider or white vinegar
1/3 cup water
2 tablespoons sugar
½ teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
Chopped fresh dill weed or parsley, if desired.

Place cucumbers in small glass or plastic bowl.
In tightly covered container, shake remaining ingredients except dill weed.  Pour over cucumbers.  Cover and refrigerate at least 3 hours to blend flavors.
Drain cucumbers.  Sprinkle with dill weed.
Store covered in refrigerator.

I can’t begin to tell you how many times Mom made that (except for the dill weed or parsley).  I LOVE this book!

The County of Alameda had a massive layoff about 15 years ago.  A lot of folks were laid off who were tenured, but didn't have as much time as folks who kept their jobs.

Money was tight statewide and we weren't getting state support (as we are constitutionally SUPPOSED to be) from the tax coffers, so the County was forced to cut its throat, so to speak.  A lot of folks in clerical/finance positions were let go, only to be rehired as temps, but without the medical/dental/retirement benefits.

In the mid-1990s, the unions became very active, especially the SEIU, and demanded that the County do something about the incredibly large TEMP workforce, especially in light of the County having become fiscally solvent and having become engaged in buying buildings and constructing same.

We now have a very meager temp force...and there are strong union-demanded guidelines that have been put into place that make it nearly inconceivable such layoffs will occur again.

Never say never, though.

Do any DRs have an HP printer using ink cartridges 56 or 57? I've got several new cartridges I can no longer use and the HP store or customer service is no help about exchanging them for the cartidges my new printer uses, so I have some freebies to give away or toss out.

DR Elmore - those numbers sound familiar.  I'll check when I get home, OK?

Cassie Kubinski played Mirette in the Jones-Schmidt show when I scored it for Goodspeed.  Lord, that was 9 years ago! She's been through college by now.

Yes - and she is beautiful and sings wonderfully.  She also had a dance number in a bar in one of the scenes, which should be something to see when the film is released.

That's exactly what is happening where I work now.  I'm just praying that 8 years of service will put me above the cut line.

Good for you!  Have you used that number yet, and did it work?

I remember your telling me that you knew several of the people involved in the movie and had been hearing about it from them.  It was very emotional to work on that movie.  Everyone connected with it, cast and crew, had some kind of personal 9/11 story.  That final scene - and to be overlooking ground zero like that, was particularly emotional.  It was, indeed, a labor of love for pretty much all involved.

I was actually wondering the same thing.  I kept thinking that some of the new "slowness" of my reading and scrolling was due to the latest Safari update.  However, I have noticed that when I come up on a page that does not have an animated avatar, the page scrolls normally - no "stutter".  I have a feeling the animated avatars are eating up bandwidth.

Is there a way to non-animate those avatars?

Hope you continue to feel better Danise, and that you get to return to work soon.  And in the meantime, enjoy the break from work.  I'm sure you'll be back in the full swing of things in no time.

So true - it's almost impossible and takes forever to fire a government worker.  And the benefits are very good, too.

Anyone know the group Weather Report?

Weather Report was a wonderful supergroup of former Miles/Cannonball alumni (among others) featuring, in its first incarnation, Josef Zawinul (who sadly passed way too young a month or two ago), Wayne Shorter,  and Sergio Mendes' former percussionist Dom um Romao (first husband of Flora Purim, before she hooked up with another percussionist, Airto, who also played with the group).  BK, I would say you may not like the first two or three Weather Report albums, as they are a bit on the spare, non-melodic side, but their later albums, starting with "Sweetnighter," have some really gorgeous stuff on them.

DR Ginny, who lets no moss grow under her, has already confirmed that she can use them.  Since she and Richard are always such good hosts when I go back to visit  I'm haapy that I can send something to them.

On a cautionary note to all DRs, when I bought my new printer from HP, I gave them my old model and they recommended the upgrade I purchased.  I was too naive to ask about ink cartridges and foolishly assumed the old ones would be compatible with the new printer.  If any DRs are thinking about a new printer, i'd suggest you keep your ink supply low.

Movies:when we were children, going to matinees, we always "stayed to see it twice"It was only post 8th grade, with the arrival of multi-screens that it became one viewing and out. Recent films on DVD that I haven't tired of watching are GOSFORD PARK< GALAXY QUEST<ROOM WITH A VIEW & LA CONFIDENTIAL.The first stage show I saw more than once was HER FIRST ROMAN, during the Boston tryout in the summer of '68.This was because , for the 1st time, I had wheels, cash and there was a show in Boston all at the same time. After a 5 year vow of poverty, the Nat'l Co of ACL hit Detroit;I became addicted all over again-saw it 3 times, 1 x in chicago, 1 x in Boston and probably 4 x in NYC. CHICAGO  I caught in NYC in AUG 77, in City of Chicago in winter of '78, and the new version 4 different tours in Detroit. Caught FULL MONTY(replacement cast) x 2 in NYC, and 3 X in DET.If I lived in NYC< I'd be a theater addict and totally broke, so perhaps it's best I'm still in Ann Arbor.

Ooh! Ooh! I've finally lost my "Jr. Member" status (it's the little things in life that matter...)

Speaking of little things, we've been given a final deadline on our new arrival. If the kid don't get the lead out and make his/her debut before this Tuesday, then they're gonna go in and get him/her... (pretty nice Hannukah present, but we'd rather not have to deal with a C-section...  :-\). I'm back from lunch (infantile!!! Harrumph-rumph!)

It was very pleasant.  I went to the Oakland Museum and had a bowl of soup and their meat loaf special with salad and rosemary-roasted potatoes. Very yummy and piquant.

I dined solo.  One of my two remaining regular dining partners is out of the office until later this p.m.

The other seems to still be either very, very busy (not even the usual "Good morning, Ron" greeting this a.m.

I don't mind that at all, actually, as I'm not a morning person and gratuitous platitudes are wearisome day after day.

So....either she's busy, or she's still in a snit from yesterday.

Either way, I WIN!

I began watching the Carol Burnett AMERICAN MASTERS program. I'm only about 40 minutes in, but I love that it's not a chronological biography of her life. We keep going back and forth between recent, mid-career, and early Carol, and it really keeps my interest up this way.

How great to see some of the singing clips from her show (as well as the two MATTRESSS productions) since it doesn't appear we're likely to ever get them on DVD.

"From whence cometh these nifty new avatars "

Interesting!  I was curious what “word” would do with this sentence-nothing.  I clicked on whence to see what the on-line dictionary would do with the word and found…

“• Can we know whence comes this good luck?”

Well, Cinderella has its one and only preview tonight and then we open.  Due to a longstanding gig, I was not able to be at dress last night (I know it's horrible, but what can you do?), so hopefully all the kinks are out.  I hope this comment is accepted with the humor with which it is intended, but the biggest "major change" in the show is Cinderella's phrasing--she would have been murdered by Richard Rodgers, I'm sure.  She especially likes coming in late and making eighth note pickups sixteenths.  :)  But she does have a lovely, lovely voice and will probably end up in NYC post-Miss America.

Good evening, fellow Dear Readers. I spent the entire day at the river birdwatching. We counted about 35 or so species. The highlight, though, was a bobcat and a beaver.

The Mesa police helicopter was circling over the river with people hanging out the door, sometimes standing on the skids. They must have been training rescue workers. We were glad to see that they were wearing hardhats while dangling out of the chopper. Like that would make a difference.

Good Evening!

I'm back from midtown... And for some unknown reason, the shoes I bought a few weeks ago were not agreeing with my feet at all while I was traipsing about the streets of New York City.  I have a small blister on my right heel, and there's some sort of irritation on my left "pinky" toe.  Most unseemly.  In any case, I had wanted to walk around a bit more, but after taking care of my errands and taking care of some shopping, I hopped back on the A train uptown.  I may head out again, but...

...While I was out, I happened to receive a couple of calls inquiring about my availability to play for various audition calls.  I tentatively said, "Yes," to everyone, but since I didn't have my calendar on me, I told them I would have to confirm once I got home.  Well...  It turns out I am available for all the calls I had been asked about, and it looks like I'm going to be quite busy over the next two weeks.  -I guess the strike really is over. :)  *And I guess I can buy Christmas gifts this year too.  ;)

I did walk by some of the theatres annd TKTS.  It was nice seeing all the door men back on duty, and I even ran into a couple of actors and actresses on their way out of their brush-up rehearsals.  I'm guessing EVERYONE had a brush-up rehearsal today.

When I walked by TKTS around 5:00, almost every single show was up on the board, except for the usual suspects (Wicked, Jersey Boys, Young Frankenstein, etc.).  However, Grease was up there, and that was actually a bit of a surprise to me.  Alas, there were maybe ten people in line at the windows.  I know they opened the booth a half-hour earlier today at 2:30, so maybe that's when the crowds came by, but it seemed strangely - and unfortunately - deserted when I walked by.  -The lines at the theatre box offices also seemed a bit light tonight too.

I was tempted to go up and get a ticket to something, but since everything was up there, I really couldn't decide what I wanted to see.  -And my feet were really starting to bother me by then too.  :-\

For any NYCers out there who may find themselves near the Time-Warner Center at Columbus Circle, and who may be in need of a caffeine fix, the Illy Coffee[/color] (http://www.illy.com/wps/wcm/connect/us/illy) folks have set up their free espresso booth again in the lobby.  However, this year, it's up on the second floor in front of Border's.  They've also somewhat streamlined the process this year by switching to pre-packed pods for the espresso.  Last year, they were a totally manual operation - grinding the beans, measuring them out, tamping them into the cup, etc.  And when you're serving over 3000 people a day, well... In any case...

It's a good shot of espresso, and they do have steamed milk available if you'd prefer a macchiato.  I'm sure I'll be making a return visit or two over the next two weeks.

Oh - They're serving a medium roast espresso blend in both regular and decaf.  *And if you're really nice - and the line isn't that long, they will make you a double-shot.  :-*

I watched this program shortly after it's original broadcast a few weeks ago.  And I've actually watched it already a few more times.  The PBS affiliate out of DC was running different "American Masters" programs back to back on Thanksgiving Day, and I ended up watching it again before the big dinner.  And then again on Friday.  And now I think I'll finally pick up that "Carol Burnett Sings" CD I keep spying at Virgin.

While I was out, I grabbed a bite to eat at a new Mexican eatery on Ninth Ave., Lime Jungle.  I think they've been open a few weeks, however, the front of house and back of house still seemed to be scrambling a bit.  And the food was a bit lackluster too.  I always get suspicious when I go to a "real Mexican" eatery, and the tacos come topped with white and orange cheeses.  I was hoping for cotija or queso fresca.  However, the beef short ribs in the Beef Short Ribs taco were quite good, but I wasn't too fond of the very floury-tasting flour tortilla.  And I had to ask one too many times for too many things: a straw, a set-up of silverware, hot sauce, my check.  :-\

I'll have to check out the food blogs before I venture there again.  -On the plus side, it's a nice looking space.

Elan, as a veteran of two midnight to mid-morning (as in 3 a.m.) "Honey, I think my water's broken" wake-up calls, sometimes inducements have their up-side.  ;)

Not if you are the one who is induced, after hours/days and hours of labor!  And then it still takes hours & hours of labor before the kid finally arrives, with additional assistance!

We also had an interesting series broadcast here on our local PBS about the Canadian perspective to WW2 called The War in Canada in Colour.

They had a narrator and colour film images pieced together to tell the story. It was well done. I suspect Jennifer has seen or heard about this. It was originally done a few years back.

There was one clip in the show I found rather interesting and that was of the visit of George and Elizabeth to canada. Some of my Canadian relatives sent my great-aunt several momentos from that visit and I inherited them when she passed away.

I did just that and became bored and miserable.  It was a great job financially, but I'm one of those people who wants more than that. Now this isn't intended as an insult to anyone. I'm only speaking of my personal experience at my job.  If there had been different co-workers, I may have enjoyed it a lot more

JRand, regarding your question about film outtakes, here's the way it worked back in the day...

You would shoot a camera roll (usually 1,000 feet--about 11 minutes in 35mm) and that roll is processed in the lab. When the film was shot, the script supervisor noted which takes were good (circled takes) and those takes were printed, i.e. a work print was made which is what the editor cuts up.

The unused or bad takes stay on the developed camera roll, intact, until the film is "locked", and no other changes will be made. Once the film is finalized, the negative is cut (conformed) to match the work print that the editor cut. The work print is kind of like the blueprint, the editor is like the architect, and the negative cutter "builds the house".

After the negative is conformed, all the leftover pieces are stored until somebody decides it's not worth paying to store anymore and it ends up in a landfill, or an incinerator, or if you're lucky, preserved by someone who cares. There are whole stock footage libraries made up from outs, say, of Movietone newsreels, etc.

The Major and the Minor
Bachelor Mother

Well I had a very busy day..full of busy work. The kind that has to be done, but you can't bill for. But it's done and I feel much better.

I went to Curves and the woman working there said "You came back!" in a very surprised voice. It made me laugh. I have discovered that the evenings are slow there. (that used to be their busy time) so tonight I was the only one there for 1/2 my workout and there was only one other person for the other 1/2. I like that.

Going into labor vibes for the Lovely Wife of DR Elan!

Our local Italian restaurant recommends the eggplant parmesan to pregnant women anxious to deliver. This worked for two of my friends. Check it out, Elan!

Speaking of weather reports...we are under a winter weather watch all day Saturday. Snow, sleet, freezing rain and ice are all forecast. Lovely.   I love winter but hate the ice. So tonight I went to the grocery store, filled the car with gas and did all those "storm is coming" things.  I have also decided to bring work home every night during the winter and forward the office phone to my cell phone. That way if the weather is bad and I don't have any appointments scheduled, I can work from home.

DR Danise - Can you get a second opinion?  -Of course, the second opinion may end up concurring with your first opinion, but at least you'd have another piece of counsel.

My opinion is that Danise needs some dark chocolate!  :)

He still has a picture of Art on his desk!

I do remember hearing that little girl belting out "Mama, He's Making Eyes at Me," and I thought at the time that an adult man making eyes at that little girl was disturbing.

Next, I watched the one bonus feature in the set - about 8 minutes or so called "The Price of Success" in which they describe how Angela's exhaustion led to them having the guest sleuths Keith Michell, Jerry Orbach, and Len Cariou. Angela admitted that they got lots of mail complaining about the episodes where Jessica wasn't in the entire episode which is why those stopped after season 7.

I thoroughly enjoyed the rerun (new to me) of SUPERNATURAL's season premiere tonight. Yes, they seem to have stopped desaturating the color from the show, so Jensen Ackles looks ever-so handsome. And the demons tonight were especially wicked and loathesome. Good start to the season.

Thanks Ginny. I swore I was never going to forward my calls to my cell phone, but I did it over Thanksgiving and it relieved so much of the stress of wondering if I'm missing calls. So now any time I leave the office I forward the calls to my cell phone.  I thought it would make me feel tied to the office, but it actually makes me feel a lot freer.

The circuit training with 14 different machines and a rest between each one, works really well for me. I lost 35 pounds last time.

The hours here are goofy too they are open early in the morning and then close at noon or something and then are open from 3-7 PM.   The workout is only a half hour. There is a recorded voice that tells you when to go to the next station, when to check your pulse etc. It works for me. My plan is 3x a week at Curves and the treadmill at home on the other days.  So far so good.

DR Julie,
Becca Ayers went to Stephens College. Their summer stock is The Okoboji Summer Theater. It's in the lakes area where I used to live. I know I saw her in Little Women and Tintypes.  It's great fun to see the Stephens College "kids" do so well
