Post by: bk on December 13, 2007, 12:37:38 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were here, there, and everywhere, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently trying to find a fershluganah pear tree.

Today will also be a day of errant-and-truant-ness.  I need to get to work early (ha!) so that I can leave at about 11:00 a.m., to drive a friend (and former co-worker) of my mom's (who I know also) to the airport.  I'll then come right back to work for a few hours, then go to the theater for our only Thursday performance before our last weekend of performances.  Today is going to be a long day. :P

Good morning, all! I spent the afternoon and evening boxing up Christmas things for shipment andthen discovered that on about half of them I forgot to add the Christmas card! Oy.  Today I will try to rectify that.  First, I have some time in Toyland, then luncheon and a movie with my friend Tara to celebrate her birthday.  She's my horror film date, so we're seeing THE MIST at 1:20.  Then I shall hie me back here to fix the card/package problem. I'd like to be able to hit the post office first thing tomorrow morning and mail some of these packages.

DR TCB, how are you feeling? Has everything physically calmed down? Did you see your doctor?

Thursday morning greetings!  It's rainy and foggy here in SW Ohio today.

When I got home last night, DH Richard was preparing burgers for dinner, which we ate while he and Rob watched The Bourne Ultimatum (I studied the mantle and decorated it after I ate).  I was very tired, so went to bed early.  By doing that, I see I missed a birthday greeting from DR Vixmom (thank you  :-*) and wonderful pictures from DRs Edisaurus and Singdaw.

The musicals of Mr Jerry Herman are always fun to see and to work on, and I like most everything....but if I have to choose a favorite:

My Best Girl
Mame
Put on Your Sunday Clothes
It Only Takes a Moment

Least favorite and song I would NEVER miss if all copies were destroyed today so that it could never ever ever EVER be sung again:

Ribbons Down My Back

That PBS Jerry Herman special sounds wonderful. I'll be looking forward to seeing it.

My favorite Herman:

"It Only Takes a Moment"

"I Don't Want to Know"

"Lovin' You"

"Song on the Sand"

"I Won't Send Roses"

"That's How Young I Feel"

"Mame"

I got up very early this morning (don't know why; I guess I had just had enough sleep), and after getting the bedroom areas cleaned and the newspaper read, I settled in for some viewing.

I finished the episode of RICK & STEVE that I had started last night but stopped in the middle when CRIMINAL MINDS was coming on.

In it, Rock found himself driving a monster truck at a truck rally, and it was very funny seeing these things done with toy people and toy trucks.

Then I started my next TV box set - DIRT starring Courtney Cox Arquette. I watched the show on FX, and it's a wicked guilty pleasure. Great lead performances, but very salacious storylines that require a lot of suspension of disbelief.

I got the pilot episode watched. The others, as I recall, are narrated by the show's resident schizophrenic photographer Don Konkey. I'll continue watching them this afternoon and this evening. There are 13 episodes in the first season set.

DR TCB, to answer your question from last night about the two gay characters in AS THE WORLD TURNS:

the actors are playing college freshmen. I'm sure the actors are older than that in real life. However, maybe you should look back at your freshman picture in your college yearbook. We looked VERY young back then. I look like a baby in my freshman picture.

I'm ashamed to admit that I don't know my Herman scores as well as I should... I saw Carol Channing's 4,000th or 4500th "Dolly" lo these many years ago, and spent many a beery Saturday night singing "Bosom Buddies" at various and sundried piano bars, but never really spent the time to learn all the master's songs. One of these days, I suppose... I love his bittersweet songs ("Time Heals Everything," "If He Walked..." "Look Over There"), and an old friend did a killer version of "Wherever He Ain't" that made me love that song as well.

I guess folks saw the Golden Globe nominations this morning. I have seen very few of the movies up for awards at this point. Only HAIRSPRAY of the best picture nominees.

I noticed they put Travolta in the supporting actor category. Not worthy of a nomination, I don't think. If they were going to pick a supporting actor in HAIRSPRAY to nominate, I would have chosen James Marsden.

As for the Topic of Day...

The only Jerry Herman score I'm really familiar with is Mack & Mabel.  "Times Heals Everything" and "I Won't Send Roses" are particular favorites.  -And on those rare occasions when an actress brings in "Wherever He Ain't" to an audition, and gets to sing the whole song, and gets the whole build of it right.... LOVE IT!

Whew!  It's nice to know I'm not alone in my Jerry-Herman-lacking-ness.

In fact - and I think I've admitted this before here on HHW - I don't ever recall seeing a complete Jerry Herman show all the way through.  Either on stage or on film.  -Although, when I was in high school, one of the "Grand Dames" of the community theatre scene in Northern Virginia had already pegged me as a "Sondheim Queen" and not a "Herman Queen".  I guess his "prediction" came true.

DR Jose asked if anyone watched or liked this year's winner.

I love this show. And actually really loved 2 of the final 3 (chantal and jenah),. They were my two favorites from the start.

I actually really disliked Bianca (who left last week). She was so mean.

But i am also really unhappy with the winner.  I don't find her pics to be very good over the season.  I hate her haircut.  And i thought her CoverGirl photo was bad (and her commercial just okay). I was really disappointed that she won. And also really disappointed that they dumped jenah after that huge breakthrough. Why bother to do that and then dump her moments later?

JERRY HERMAN with Angela Lansbury

Jerry Herman is one of America's foremost songwriters. Frequently compared to Irving Berlin, he does it all -- composes both the music and the lyrics.

If you profess to like musicals, you MUST know about  Jerry Herman. Educate yourself at http://www.jerryherman.com/ (http://www.jerryherman.com/).

The eagle has landed, so to speak.

A short, non-eventful flight to Cincinnati and a delayed boarding of my flight to Columbia compounded by a back-up on the runway had me arriving one hour late.  No weather/technical difficulties blamed.

Am tired.  Am hungry.  And it's warm here.

It's like summer...almost.

I think it's possible to enjoy Mr. Sondheim AND Mr. Herman.  They are completely different animals, but both have their strengths and, heresy though it may be, their weaknesses.

I've viewed the Golden Globe noms, which are as ridiculous as always - who spent the most money, who courted the Foreign Press the most - and bingo - nomination.  It's nice to see that my favorite film composer, Clint Eastwood, is up for both score and song.  One just scratches one's cabeza.

The stove installers just left. Despite our very careful planning---Greg went to Sears and got the installation specs so we could run the gas line and the wiring---the gas pipe and outlet are both in the wrong place. Greg spent a long time working on these to get them exactly right.

In the words of the Sears installer: I don't know who draws these things, but this is wrong". Oy!

Anyway, it looks installed enough to get my $200 rebate from the gas company, and we'll just deal with reconfiguring when Greg has time.

And it sure *looks* nice!

I have no problem enjoying musicals by Mr Herman - despite my love of Sondheim's work.  I do prefer the songs from "The Grand Tour", "Dear World" and "Mack and Mabel" to the "done to death" Dolly and Mame.

Of course I still need a few more years away from seeing "Into The Woods" again too.  For some reason I've not tired of "Company" which I've seen more.

I guess Miss Spectacular and Mrs Santa Clause were Jerry Herman's "Bounce".

Good Afternoon!

Back from the gym... Whew!

I decided to give the rowing machine a try.  It's always been one of those machines that looked "boring" to me, so I never really gave it a shot.  Recently, I've been coming across articles about a "good rowing machine workout", so I went ahead and gave it a try today.

I discovered that the machine was equipped with a computer display, and it even had a "How To" tutorial, complete with an animation that you rowed along with to check your form.  Cool!  After about five minutes of getting acclimated, I set the timer for 30 minutes...

I knew my upper body got a good workout, but I was surprised at how much of a workout my legs got.  I definitely had "sea legs" once I stood up after my workout.  Whew!

It's definitely ugly outside here in NYC, at least in my 'hood.  The two block walk to and from the gym was cold, slushy, sleety and slippery.

My gym has the same set-up.  Well, the rowing machines don't have the TV screens.  I sometimes will bring a set of headphones so I can watch the news if I go in the morning, but I tend not to watch or listen to anything.  I tend to not work as hard as I should when I try to watch something on TV and workout at the same time.  I tend to slow down to the pace of the program.  Watching the clock countdown is my motivation.

*And you should also remember that your hearing is a bit more sensitive while you exercise.  Always check those volume levels.

DR edisaurus - I'd look into hotel rooms sooner than later.  A friend of mine just booked a few days at his usual stand-by, The Skyline - which also happens to be my usual stand-by - and for some strange unknown reason, their traditionally low January rates are almost double(!) what they were last year.  And once he started checking some other properties, he noticed the same trend elsewhere.  However, he did find that the rates on the East Side tended to run lower, even at some of the nicer hotels.

I got the HARRY POTTER Blu-ray treasure chest today. Good golly, what a set! Besides all the films in high definition, the thing has several bonus discs, and set of Potter memorabilia cards and an expensive-looking set of metallic bookmarks based on Potter items.

Of course, I won't actually be able to get to watching the films until next week, but it's nice to have them here now.

Several websites had reported that people buying the Blu-ray box version of the HARRY POTTER films were discovering that THE GOBLET OF FIRE wasn't in Blu-ray but had been mistakenly packed with the HD-DVD version. That was the first thing I checked when my box arrived today. Thankfully, the disc is Blu-ray as it is supposed to be.

I decided to give the rowing machine a try.  It's always been one of those machines that looked "boring" to me, so I never really gave it a shot.  Recently, I've been coming across articles about a "good rowing machine workout", so I went ahead and gave it a try today.

I knew my upper body got a good workout, but I was surprised at how much of a workout my legs got.  I definitely had "sea legs" once I stood up after my workout.  Whew!

I love rowing machines! At least the one I used to use. My friend and former personal trainer, Jim Wharton, used to say that rowing machines were only a good cardio workout, but I disagree. I agree with Jose, that they provide a good upper body--and, to some degree, lower body--workout, as well.

DR JoseSPiano - the gym where I go has individual televisions [with headphones] for each piece of aerobic excercise equipment.  I'm not dedicated enough to admit that without that, I would find the time I spend excercising absolutely unendurable.   :-\

I listen to BK-produced CDs while on my stationary bike. Jason Graae is my favorite for exercising.

I agree, though, that walks are simply more interesting. And I think the fresh air is good, too.

I'm back from THE MIST, which is a wonderful film adaptation of Stephen King's novella.  The movie is bleaker than the story with a truly crushing finale.  Good cast, and I loved seeing Frances Sternhagen, who seems to be taking on now all the roles left open by the death of Jessica Tandy. She's quite wonderful in this, as are Toby Jones, Thomas Jane, and the rest of the cast.  The creatures are quite terrifying and there are some marvelous sequences. Interesting use of music as well.

Well, I just spent the past hour or so planning my trip back home to Virginia for Christmas for the holidays.  I tried this airline.  I tried that airline.  I checked flights from La Guardia.  I checked flights from JFK.  I checked flights into Richmond.  I checked flights into DC - both DCA and Dulles.  And after going through all those permutations, I finally settled on flying out from LGA next Thursday into Richmond, and then flying back on New Year's Day.  So, I guess I'll be spending both Christmas and New Year's Eve down in Virginia.

I did look into flying back sometime between Christmas and New Year's, but the airfares were just a bit on the ridiculous side.  In any case, at least now I can plan my last week of 2007 here in NYC.

As for what happens at The Reservoir, well... Whenever I've been there, I'm usually walking or running - counter-clockwise as the signs say to - so that's about all I see happening.  People walking and/or running.  And stopping in the middle of the path to take pictures... grrrrr...

However... As for what happens in other parts of the Park, well... Seriously, I'm still surprised that such "activity" continues to go on.  Alas, it still does. During some of my walks through the Park, I've seen policemen on foot patrol checking off the beaten paths.  :-\

I began my afternoon viewing with last night's CSI: NY. Two murder cases, one very gruesome (an exploding cigar takes off a man's face) and one really tragic (a young kid on a bicycle hit by a stray bullet.) I enjoyed the show very much though the mysteries weren't very mysterious.

They sure gave Carmine Giovinazzo a chance to show his stuff.

I'm a big Jerry Herman fan!  Even more of one since meeting him, Don Pippin, Karen Morrow, Paige O'Hare and Jason Graae when they performed here at Carnegie Mellon a couple of years ago.  Both Don and Jerry were very gracious to everyone at the reception following.  Jason insisted on personally introducing me to Karen Morrow, who had sung the finest "I Don't Want to Know" that I have ever heard.

And on that note, my favorite Herman songs are:
Shalom
Milk and Honey
Love, Look in My Window
Love is Only Love
It Only Takes a Moment
Just Leave Everything to Me
Loving You
Mame
Bosom Buddies
Hello, Dolly
And I Was Beautiful
Kiss Her Now
I'll Be Here Tomorrow
Marianne
Song on the Sand
The Best In the World
La Cage Aux Folles
My Great Dream
Where in the World is My Prince?

Aww.... I was just checking out a friend's blog, and he posted the following:

I think this is one of the most brilliant moments in television history. It was on the "Andy Griffith Show," circa 1960. Here's the setup: Ben, the Scrooge-like character in Mayberry, wants a mild-mannered family man jailed on Christmas eve for making moonshine, seeing how Ben sells liquor legally at his own store. The family man explains he was just making some holiday cheer, and Andy -- of course -- is reluctant to lock him up over Christmas. But Ben insists, so Andy decides to bring the guy's family -- and his own -- to the sheriff's office for Christmas Eve. Ben climbs on a stool outside and peers into the jail, secretly longing to join in the spirit of the holiday. He even tries to get himself arrested, to no avail ... And then THIS SCENE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBsarIO_suw)...

So... I decided to make a run to the grocery store up the street to buy some paper towels, as well to pick up the fixin's for a pot of chili.  Well, once I got back to the apartment, I noticed some similar items laid out on the kitchen counter.  It turns out that Jim and Bill had gotten home just a few minutes before I did, and they too made a stop at the store to pick up some Mexican-themed ingredients.  So, I may make my chili later tonight - and then let it sit for a day - it always better the day after.  And in the meantime, I shall be supping on the Mexican Lasagna that's being composed in the kitchen right now.

Dinner was good.  And the red wine wasn't actually palatable.  I had bought a cheap bottle over the summer, but we didn't uncork it until tonight.

And cookies, of course, for dessert.

Did some work at Ye Olde Piano, and am now listening to a great Pat Williams CD, to be followed by what I hope will be another great Pat Williams CD, neither of which I knew was in existence until I found them today at a used CD store for less than the price of a happy meal.

Is one of them "Threshhold"?  (The cigar cover).  One of my all-time faves.  I saw his big band in person when I was about 16 and it changed my life.

Scary is the part that tells me not a good idea to go.  Oh, the movies I wish I had never seen with Keith ;D  Top of the list is WILLARD.

Some Edu Lobo albums for BK (in no particular order):

Edu Lobo por Edu Lobo (with the Tamba Trio)
Edu & Tom/Tom & Edu (with Jobim, natch, each doing the other's songs)
Songbook Edu Lobo (2 CDs with versions by the cream of Brasilian artists, including an impeccably gorgeous reading of "Reza" by the vocal group Be Happy)
Cantiga de Longe
Edu Lobo (1967, featuring an impossibly young Gracinha Leporace--later Mrs. Sergio Mendes)

But before I go, yesterday, Jane wrote:

While we hiked today Keith mentioned normally in the wee hours of the morning he contemplates the universe & the meaning of life.  This morning he contemplated why Tarzan didn’t have a beard.  I thought maybe it had to do with the fact Tarzan didn’t seem to have much hair anywhere else.  Keith said nope.  Then I suggested he got shaving supplies from the natives who didn’t have beards either.  Now he wants to know why the natives didn’t have beards.

I suggested possibly some wise person here might know the answers to these important questions.

What I want to know is (at least in regards to the Disney movie and stage musical), Tarzan doesn't speak and has never heard the English language, except when he was a baby and he shouldn't remember that.  If Jane (the movie Jane) and her father are British and speak with British accents, why does Tarzan, when he learns their language from them, speak with an American accent??  That's what I want to know. ;)

Hmmm...

Here's the closing paragraph about the upcoming overhaul of PBS's "Masterpiece Theatre".  Looks very interesting..

Quote
In addition to the Austen films, which will begin with a new adaptation of “Persuasion,” starring the British actress Sally Hawkins, the season includes “Miss Austen Regrets,” a biography of the novelist. Other films include “Cranford,” a three-part mini-series starring Judi Dench; “My Boy Jack,” starring Daniel Radcliffe, of the Harry Potter movies, playing the son of the author Rudyard Kipling; and a new adaptation of E. M. Forster’s “Room With a View.”

A nice Cesar salad might go well. Or I'll just stir-fry something in the wok I keep around the garden.

I watched CSI "live" tonight for the first time in a long time. OK wrap-up of the case begun a week or two ago with Warrick.

SPOLIER

With the look on Lou Gedda's face at the end, I think the Warrick tale has more to unfold

All this talk of Pat Williams music caused me to go to Amazon, listen to some snippets of his SINATRALAND CD and then put it into my wishlist for future purchasing.

Oy, HHW costs me SO much money!

And I am wondering if either DR Jrand or BK purchased this week the new DVD release of the 1960s Toho film LATITUDE ZERO...Akira Takarada, Joseph Cotten and Patricia Medina...what's not to like!

This is one Japanese sci-fi that I have never seen, but have always heard about, so I cannot wait for my DVD to arrive!!!
