Hmm....

Did anyone else receive the NYMF newsletter [ The 11 O'Clock Number ]?

Nice... Glossy stock.  Color.  Must have cost them a bundle.

Did anyone notice any particular omissions on the back...under "NYMF Alumni Success Stories"?  Any particular show which has had a new International production, and another domestic production planned?

Hmm.....

Good morning, all!  I've sent DR tomovoz my email birthday wishes and I've checked my bank balance, so I can begin the day with a trek to the Post Offie.  My branch opens at 8 and I want to be one of the first ones in to mail my packages.  I'm a bit down today: my father would have turned 86 today.

My other plans for today include laundry and the NYPL Music Collection, and I look forward to both.

BK, I too don't understand the SHOW BOAT delay; I thought the DVD had been announced over a year ago.  I love the 1936 film, whenever Helen Morgan walks on camera it's a moment both magical and tragic, and the cast is so fantastic.

TOD:
DVD: Hairspray, Knocked Up which I've been meaning to see forever, Brothers & Sisters season 1
CD:  Kathleen Battle, Marilyn Horne, and other holiday CDs
VCR:  I hope Santa will be good; this porn is stale!

DR MBARNUM, I saw Latitude Zero at the drive in....about 40 years ago, it seemed to be a mixed up mess and I don't remember much of it.  But I did stay to watch it until the end.

TOD

DVD - Step Down to Terror, a U-I/B thriller from 1959 or so which seems to be a remake or rethink of SHADOW OF A DOUBT. Sent by DR MBARNUM

CD - Josh Groban Christmas

Today is "cemetery day"!  This is the day each year my mom, my aunt and I visit family plots and place some flowers on graves.

We also visit with one of my mom's first cousins who babysat my mom when she was little.  "Cousin Dot" is the daughter of one of my maternal grandfather's sisters.

We'll have a good meal.  Then, we will place the flowers.  And finally we'll head back home with a stop at Westgate Mall for some shopping, etc.  There's even a CostCo across the road and we may go sightseeing there, too.

I had a GREAT night's sleep.  Best sleep I've had since I don't know when.  It's probably because I was pretty darned tired from the trip.

I blame "Hairspray", one of the several inflight movies.  Had they not tempted me with "Hairspray", I'd have napped a couple of more hours as we headed east.

"Hairspray" -- a pretty darned spiffy and good movie musical.  Nikki Blonsky was perfect as Tracy Turnblad.  And James Marsden was exceptional as Corny Collins.  Travolta was....well....you never once forgot he was Travolta in a rather bad "fat suit" as fat suits go.

Of course, finding something "to say" would have been the big challenge since all I had done since my short message yesterday afternoon was unpack and nap.

Still....my mom fried chicken for supper!  Yessirree...my mom's fried chicken!!!!

And we had potatoes and green beans and cooked applies and wheat rolls.

And there is a rum cake with my name on it that hasn't YET been sliced because I made a p-i-g pig out of myself with the fried chicken.

However, I was glad I didn't have several pages up with which I'd have to catch.

I slept with my windows open last night.  It was rather peaceful.

A couple of trains blew through town, each time alerting the dogs and cats to get off the tracks by tooting their whistles.

It's oddly comforting.  It's also a blast from the past as I have distinct childhood memories of hearing the trains go through this town.

Belatedly, favorite Herman songs are "Time Heals Everything" and "Put on Your Sunday Clothes", plus Song on the Sand; I was driving my mother back to Mass. from Fla back in the 90's and noticed the Kleenex had come out. Song on the Sand was on the radio, and it reminded her of. when my father was courting her, going to New Hampshire beaches. But they were happy tears....Dvd will be '36 SHOW BOAT, which I taped last night. Car Cd was Pet Clark en francais, now some Mozart, and tonights flick in Ann Arbor will be LUST CAUTION

Friday morning greetings!

Happy Birthday(US) to DR Tomovoz.

Media report:

CDs(car) - Josh Groban's Noel (a birthday gift from my sister) and Handel's Messiah.  Last night, while trimming the Christmas tree, I was watching the local cable broadcast of our civic chorus' performance of Messiah, which took place earlier this month at the church we used to attend.  The soloists and chorus sounded great, the church looked beautiful, but the orchestra was AWFUL!

DVD - La Vie en Rose

On my GaGa's birthday, I do my best to be nice to everyone I encounter and be positive and not say negative things about people.

It was very rare of her to get perturbed and even rarer for her to say anything about it. If someone was annoying her (like a bad driver) she always had some funny or off the wall name she called them, which ended up making us laugh.

And what is DR Elmo up to this a.m.   No doubt dreaming of "Toyland".

I just put the laundry into the washers after an hour at the ridiculous 10024 Planetarium Station, which is living proof that as the US Postal rates go up, the service and competence decline.  I got there at 8 am to find too many people ahead of me with lots of packages.  My goal was to post one package outside the USA and then go to the automated postal machine to send off around 10 other packages.  So, there's already a line and only one postal clerk working, naturally, so we wait and wait, and the idiot woman two people ahead of me screwed up something amongst her 10 packages and had to return to the window while we waited as the clerk redid EVERYTHING!  After 20 minutes, I posted my one parcel and then had to wait another 10 minutes for the automated postal machine since by that point the post office was packed.  My 10 packages would have gone faster had the machine not been semi-damaged and the button to be pushed on the screen were working only sporadically.  I know the people waiting for me at the automated macine to get-the-hell-finshed-and-outa-there! were glad to see the end of me.

DR Laura, one benefit of living across from a beautiful Catholic Church is that, while I'm not Catholic, it's a great place to go in and say a prayer or some time in spiritual contemplation.  I will go over shortly and pray for my dad.

Grrrrrr! When I finish wrapping the presents that means I have to fo to the PO to mail them. I really HATE that place (so I'm always in 100% agreement with bk's rants about that topic).  It's run by the Snail People (i.e. Slugs!)

I need Ga-Ga, DR Edi, with me to come up with some appropriate names for them and the equally slug-like critter customers. When you're waiting .... and waiting .... at the PO, you definitely need some laughs...

Title: Re:BITS OF TID

The PO needs an express lane for simple, plain vanilla mailing or buying stamps -- no looking through ALL the stamps in the drawer to pick out the prettiest ones allowed, no slips to pick up something that gives the PO teller an excuse to go in the back and never return allowed, and no mailing of packages/envelopes that require a lawyer present to complete the paper work that is usually in triplicate -- just a simple hand me a book of stamps and here's the money, or mail this package and here's the money, done, I'm out of here....

and it might help if they had all the little booths open, instead of only one or two when the line is out the door -- the PO is worse than the DMV (well... maybe it's a toss up)...

The want ad for those places must read:

1. Slug-like people only need apply.

And the job description is simply:
1. No quick, efficient behavior allowed.
2. Require frequent on-the-clock breaks.
Title: Re:BITS OF TID
Post by: Miss Karen on December 14, 2007, 07:23:48 AM
I mailed my packages at the do-it-yourself stand in the lobby.

That's the rub -- our PO does not have a do-it-yourself stand (that would be too efficient and speed things up, heaven forbid!). There is a little window for quick pick-ups and buying stamps -- it is never open (even during its posted hours of operation).. go figure...

From the last Warner chat, a big box set of the three SHOW BOAT films will be arriving on DVD in 2008. They have allegedly been doing restorations on all three versions, so they should all look the best they've ever looked.

I have two laserdisc copies of the 1936 SHOWBOAT. Miles Kreuger does the commentary on the Criterion version, and then there's the laserdisc box set of the three SHOW BOATs that bk mentioned in the notes. This is the box that features a stereo surround track for the 1951 version which I certainly hope Warners offers as an option on the upcoming box set version. The current DVD of the 1951 version only offers mono.

singdaw - That NYMF bulletin list doesn't include any of the 2007 NYMF shows.

And the list looks very very long in part because where a show had or has a touring produciton, they (wisely from a public relations standpoint) have separately listed every single stop on the tour!  Nothing wrong with that, though.

They even list where a show has been presented in another festival (even a fringe festival), a workshop, even part of a classroom-type workshop - so I'm sure they'll be very liberal in listing any presentations of any kind for the 2007 shows in their coming releases.

Good morning, everyone!

I'm running late today, much like yesterday. Each year, once the holiday stuff is under control, I like to have a little post-rush collapse. My body tells me when it's time to do this; I don't have much choice!

"I like to have a little post-rush collapse"... "like"?!?!?!

As for the Friday Media Check...

DVD: "Hairspray"

CD: "Here And Now", Lauren Kennedy
"A Deeper Shade of Red", Andrea Burns
"Airs d'opéras français", Natalia Dessay
"Arie di bravura", Diana Damrau -  I'm catchin up on my coloraturas. ;)

And finally -
Prokofiev, Piano Concerto No. 2; Ravel, Piano Concerto in G Major - Yundi Li, pianist; Berliner Philharmoniker, Seiji Ozawa
I noticed this on various "Best Of" lists as well as the recent Grammy nominations, and was sort of surprised I had missed it at the stores.  I have a plethora of recordings of the Ravel, and the Prokofiev Second is a truly monumental(!) work.  Yundi Li's playing is nothing short of awesome.  The Prokofiev is a true "knuckle buster", and he handles all the thorny passages with ease, and, more importantly, with true musicality.  I even listened to the Prokofiev with score in hand just to "see" all the notes he was playing.  Bravo!  *The Prokofiev was also recorded Live, and I really didn't detect the audience until they burst into applause at the end.  Great sound.

"I like to have a little post-rush collapse"... "like"?!?!?!

Sorry. I should have been clearer. About this time of year I feel the need to take anywhere from a few days to a week off, just to be laid back, nothing scheduled, just putter about, go to a movie, just RELAX. Sometimes I actually prefer this to a real vacation (the sort where you go somewhere). Until the holiday stuff is under control I don't feel I can really relax.

This may be a female thing. I've mentioned it to several women and most women are able to relate to it. One of the men I mentioned it to couldn't relate at all; the other doesn't do much EXCEPT relax.  ;)

So I haven't felt like doing much the last couple o' days!

In addition to the wonderful playing of Battista (the CD I talked about in the notes), the orchestrations and arrangements are by someone named Vince Mendoza, definitely more in the Ogerman mold than the Sebeskey or Gil Evans mold.  He's got several CDs of his own, all well thought of by people on amazon, so I'll keep my eyes open for some of those.

In a news story Friday ("Spectrum holds Condom Olympics to educate on safe sex," page 3), it was incorrectly stated due to a reporting error that health and wellness educator Beth Grampetro and Tim Hegan, an ORL area director, said Fruit Roll-Ups are adequate protection against STDs. No health officials said or advocated this use at the Condom Olympics. The Daily Free Press apologizes for the confusion.

Well since the most recent date on a tombstone was sometime in the late 1800s, there weren't too many people visiting dearly departed.   The cemetary was right across the street from the dorm.  I know they later built up that part of campus. I don't know if the cemetary is there or if they moved the graves.

I haven't used an actual recipe for chili in years, and today was no exception.  Varying amounts of beef, tomatoes, beans and spices cooked together until they reach that point.  In any case...

The ground beef I bought last night - I didn't feel like splurging on a nice piece of chuck or eye or round - turned out to be twice ground, maybe even thrice ground.  So, since the texture of the meat was a bit more crumbly than I was expecting, I decided to make a very hearty version/variation of Cincinatti-styl Chili - which basically meant I upped the oregano and added a good dash of cinnamon.  I did not make spaghetti or hotdogs, but I guess if the mood hits me over the next few days, I guess I could.  It's most definitely not a "bowl of red", but it's a good, hearty New York Style Chili.  ;)

In spite of the yukky weather yesterday we had a pleasant day yesterday. I did some last minute work to finish up the volunteer duty this year and then we were off to the Lincoln Center branch of the NY Public Library. We returned some books and browsed a bit but there was nothing we wanted to check out so we left, walking underground as much as possible to avoid the slushy rain.

We then took the subway to 42nd Street, transferred to the Shuttle and went to Grand Central Station where we then walked to the Transit Museum Annex. They have a nice, small train village set up using old and new trains traveling through an approximation of Manhattan. It was a pleasant way to spend the afternoon. We came back home (with a stop at the grocery store to buy milk), dried out and I made Tuna Glop for dinner. It was quite good considering the cold, wet weather. After dinner we watched Elf (the Will Ferrell movie). A cute, sweet movie. I then went to bed and slept until 7am. The morning was spent doing laundry. I did more than planned because the usual bustling laundromat was empty so I did the regular laundry, came home and took the slipcover off the couch and washed that, and then, when the extra large machine was empty I came home and took the comforter off the bed and washed that! In all it took about 4 hours. Then we went to Bed, Bath and Beyond to buy a new blue bath mat and scented pine cones. After that I rode the stationary bike for 90 minutes and now I'm caught up with posts and posting. It's been a very productive day. Tonight we dine with a dear friend who helped volunteer.

I will now leave you all to go check the mail. It's a trip down 3 flights of steps and back up 3 flights of steps so there better be something in that mailbox!

Next, I watched last night's 30 ROCK. Elaine Stritch reprised her Emmy-winning turn as Alec Baldwin's mother, and there was some fun stuff with Liz's parents played by Buck Henry and Anita Gillette. Andy Richter played Liz's brother.

This is the view from the upper lobby of Jazz at Lincoln Center - which is in the Time-Warner Center.  From left to right you see Trump Tower (also the home of Jean-Georges and Nougatine), and The Holiday Market at Columbus Circle... And Central Park in the background.

As with Dear Reader Laura - we celebrate my mother's birthday still - not the anniversary of her death - by having a lovely day. (Christmas in July).

We still like to light a candle at meal times on occasions - it is a focus for remembering friends who have left and friends who are having problems.

I think I'll do an errand or two in about fifteen minutes.  I've been working at the piano trying to make a song funny because the guy really wants to keep it in the show, even though everyone else thinks it should go.  If I have no luck over the weekend, he can keep it in as is (bad scanning and laughless) and then it will definitely go.  I have fixed a couple of other iffy numbers, so maybe this will come together somehow, but I doubt it.  I did fix the music for it, at least.

I’m enjoying the photos and reading about the seasonal activities.  I have mixed feeling about not joining in on them.  I can’t get to the decorations, let alone set them up.  Because of my wrist I haven’t been on a baking frenzy, while not much fun may be a good thing since I’m on a diet.

I have always enjoyed shopping at my leisure, purchasing because I found the perfect gift for someone & then saving it for the holidays.  Since we moved here we rarely see something I think is a must get item for a friend.  I’m not big on gift cards, I prefer personal items.  It has sort of made me a dud in the gift giving category.

So, here I sit with no gifts to give.  On the plus side I don’t have to go to the post office.

Now if I knew someone really wanted fudge, or cookies, I just might be able to work myself into a baking frenzy next week. :)

When my sister, niece and I went to London in 2001, they wanted to visit some real old cemeteries...just because.  We found one near our hotel and I noticed that there were quite a few single men just walking around, looking at us, looking each other...and then they'd just be gone. :o

Oy, what a day.  I played the "holiday party" of a hoity-toity law firm, at a hoity-toity restaurant, where I had to shlep all my equipment (so to speak).  I'm too old for this sort of thing.

BK, Caetano Veloso is definitely an acquired taste and he seems to appeal more to women, in the strange Julio Iglesias kind of way (though Veloso is a better singer, IMHO, and obviously a brilliant composer).  Caetano's sister Maria Bethania sounds like a Brasilian Cher--in fact, considering Caetano's higher register, they could easily do a Sonny & Cher bossa nova bit.  ;)

My thoughts are with you today, dear elmore.

Instead of a dance....here is a JOKE for the new page....The Page Ten Joke:

An older Italian lady goes to her priest and says: "Father, I need to make a confession."

The priest says:  "All right, my daughter.  What is it?"

Old Lady:  "During World War Two, a handsome American soldier came to my door late one night.  He was running from the enemy and I hid him in my attic."

Priest:  "That is no sin."

Old Lady:  "Well, I fed him, and talked to him, and as time we on, we began to have a sexual relationship."

Priest:  "In times of stress, things like this happen.  I am sure God will forgive you."

Old Lady:  "May I ask one more question?"

Priest:  "Of course."

Old Lady: "Do you think I should tell him the war is over?"

You and our DR Jose!

Are any DRs fans of Tom Jones?  If so, is it possible to send me an mp3 file of "Help Yourself?"  After GHOST WHISPERER, I decided to watch Damian Lewis in the BBC adaptation of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING from SHAKESPEARE RETOLD. It's quite clever, very funny, and yet very faithful to the play. Beatrice and Benedict are now news hosts in a Wessex tv station, and Hero is the weather girl, Claudio - now Claude - works in the station and it's quite wonderful.  Anyway, "Help Yourself" is the opening music and I can't get the song out of my head now.

I ordered a gift for a baby shower gift wrapped & had it sent to the home where the shower will be held.  I received the receipt in the mail today and there was no mention of gift wrapping.  I added it all up, tax included, and was not charged for wrapping.

I called the hostess of the shower and she kindly wrapped it already.  At least she now knows I didn't have it shipped unwrapped.  How embarrassing.

Good Evening!

I'm back from Mary Poppins...

Before the show, I was able to meet up with Alexandra and her grandparents, Carlos and Theresa, as Westway Diner for some dinner.  It was great seeing Carlos and Theresa again - it's literally been years since we've been in the same room at the same time.  We had quite good meals - and it seems they started baking their own bread rolls!.   -And we ended up sitting in a booth next to Emily Skinner too.

Mary Poppins was good tonight - although, I felt that about half the audience was comatose.  After the show, I was able to take them backstage and on-stage for a bit.  Since they had a Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS winning bidder in the house tonight - she got to conduct the "Supercal" Bows - they were letting everyone spend a bit more time on stage, as well as look at the set a bit closer.  Good timing.

Alexandra also got to meet the Alexandra and Matthew - tonight's Jane and Michael Banks - as well as Rebecca Luker (BK - She sends her best), and Mary Poppins herself, Ashley Brown.

On the way back to their hotel, Alexandra notice the big Toys'R'Us store in Times Square.  And she wanted to go in.  And since they had started the later Holiday hours, well...  No purchasing was done, but she did do some scouting for later.  ;)

Tomorrow, they'll be seeing the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, and then Uncle Jojo will most likely take them down to Grand Central for the Kaleidoscope Show, as well as Bryant Park for some ice-skating.  -Although, Uncle Jojo is still not sure whether or not he'll attempt to ice-skate himself.  ;)

Hmmm...

ABC’s ‘Lost’ Is to Return, and ‘Grey’s’ Will Move (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/15/arts/television/15lost.html?ref=television)

LOS ANGELES — ABC announced on Friday that it would increase the reality programming on its schedule by more than 50 percent, beginning next month. The shake-up of the network’s ratings-leading prime-time schedule is a result of the extended writers’ strike.

ABC will also temporarily remove “Grey’s Anatomy,” its highest-rated series and one of the most profitable franchises on network television, from its normal slot on Thursdays at 9 p.m. Beginning on Jan. 31, that spot will be filled by “Lost,” which will return for an eight-episode run. “Grey’s,” which will largely be in reruns, may be broadcast on Friday or Saturday night.
