Well, you've read the notes, the notes were stirring, and now it is time for you to post until the Christmas cows come home.

I have to pack the car. DH and I are traveling to northern NJ this morning to spend two days with my Mom and her sister.  My sister and her DH will also be joining us.  And it will be a party, too, as my DH's birthday is tomorrow - St. Stephen's Day.  Good King Wenceslas looked out, on the Feast of Stephen...   My workplace is open tomorrow, the 26th, but I am taking a vacation day.  Oh, and chocolate lab Cody is visiting, so there will be dogs aplenty, cavorting!

Well, I've heard of Bene Wafers, which are a kind of savory cookie made with sesame seeds.

So a BENE FACTION would be a group of people who give Bene Wafers to the poor, right?

But I don't think the wafers would CONTAIN BEEF.  They'd spoil too quickly if they did.

Der Brucer's television woke me in the middle of the night, and I haven't been able to get back to sleep due to all the screaming.

The movie that was on was A Christmas Story, and the scene was where Ralphie was visiting Santa Claus, and all the kiddies were screaming the moment they were plopped on his lap.

Personally, I don't blame them, but their screaming woke me up and I haven't been able to get back to dreamland since.

*sob*

(At least my eye wasn't put out.)

Christmas Morning Greetings!  Rob and Mary Linda are on their way to Michigan and Richard and I are about to leave for church in Cincinnati.  We'll go to my mom's on the way home and I may stay for a movie outing with my girl relatives to see Enchanted.  We have a "girl" for each decade of age:

My mother (80s)
My aunt (70s)
My sister (60s)
Myself (50s)
My niece (40s)

As of next Thanksgiving Day, when my mother turns 90, we won't have that sequence again until my niece turns 50 in 2013.

Have a wonderful day, all!

Good morning!

I'm up and on the net earlier than usual. I have to soon head for the showers to clean up for my SWEENEY TODD outing.

Cold here this morning and the sun is trying to break through the clouds, but it has a fight on its hands.

I've already described most of the Christmas DVDs, Blu-rays, and CDs that I got (I'm not sure if I mentioned getting the GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS soundtrack and the Cerveris/Lupone SWEENEY TODD as gifts from dead friends.)

I did get the Jane Froman biography from my former college roommate that I also think I neglected to mention.

Best friend John has tentatively invited me over tonight for a Christmas dinner, so the turkey, dressing, etc. that I cooked yesterday on Christmas Eve may not continue to get eaten until tomorrow.

He is anxious to watch SHOW BUSINESS: THE ROAD TO BROADWAY since we saw WICKED and AVENUE Q together on one of our NYC trips some years ago, so if I head over there tonight, I'll be taking that with me. I've already watched it once with friend Gregg, but I enjoyed it so much that another viewing so soon after the first wouldn't bother me at all.

I already described last night what I did for Christmas Eve (Blu-rayed it all evening). When I get back from SWEENEY, I'll likely watch something Christmas-y, maybe THE BELLS OF ST. MARYS. I'm not sure what time I'd be expected over at John's if indeed we're having dinner. It was pretty much contingent on a third party who was undecided about coming. We'll see.

God morning, all! And Merry Christmas, dear readers! I hope that 2008 is good to all of you.

I've had a quiet morning puttering about the apartment, and around 11, I'll take my shopping bag of gifts over to the Raines residence and spend the early afternoon qwith them and my beloved Charlotte.  After that, I will take myself to West 43rd Street fora wonderful social event and what I'm certain will be a glorious dinner with DR FJL, Skip, and guests.

DR Jose, I think Toby is one of the best things about SWEENEY TODD, and I too have no idea of the exchange between Anthony and the Judge.  The theatre on the Upper West Side was about three-quarters filled, and the audience responded with laughs at all the funny and grotesque moments and was amazingly quiet and attentive during the rest.  At the end, lots of applause.

I have Christmas-y things to accomplish before my socializing begins. I hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Hello to all of HHW and all DRs and DFs.

I thought I'd pop in and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a joyful holiday season!  I hope you all have a wonderful day today with friends and family, and lots of joy throughout the week, as we count down toward the new year.

I've actually been very sick for several weeks with a bad respiratory virus, and was basically not doing very much.  I pulled myself together for a couple of pre-scheduled outings over that time, which were wonderful, but mostly, was just laying low, trying to feel better.

And I am feeling better now, though not 100 percent.  So that's good!

Hope you are all healthy and doing well and filled with cheer.

Today, I am very happy to be invited to dear friends' Fred and Skip to share in their wonderful holiday tradition.  And I think I will see the wonderful DR elmore there as well.  So it's a great day ahead.

Happy Holidays everyone.

Toby and Dylan seem to know it's Christmas and are looking forward to opening presents.

Actually, Toby knows how to open a present, but Dylan never acquired that skill, so we have to help him.  But both of them enjoy what's inside the wrappings.

A bit of stale soda will usually help with heartburn.  Doesn't matter what flavor.  But the staleness helps keep the Ph down.  Even stale club soda will work.

Just heard from the darling daughter who will, in fact, not be here today - this has happened a couple of times before.  Because her darling mother has both a Christmas Eve AND Christmas Day dinner, and expects her darling daughter at both, darling daughter has to drive down, spend a couple of hours here, and then drive back (almost all the way to San Diego).  Since they slept in, it's too hard to do all that driving, so she'll be here bright and early tomorrow and will be able to spend more time, since they'll drive home directly from here.

Since I rarely accept party invites on Christmas Day (last year being an exception) I now have the entire day to myself and I have no idea what myself wants to do with it.  I guess myself can open up some presents and have some tuna pasta salad later (no spaghetti sauce for ME today).

I could jump the gun and see Sweeney Todd at the Arclight Cinemas, but a) I don't like jumping the gun, b) I have no idea if they're showing film or digital media, although, that said, I'm sure I'd get right in, which leads to c) is that something I really want to see on Christmas Day?  Is there a feel-good fun movie out right now?

Good Afternoon!

The Mass was actually sort of fun.  Well, fun for me at least.  First of all, the turnout seemed kind of small, we almost thought we had the wrong time since there weren't that many cars in the parking lot when we got there.  -We also passed by some other churches on the way, and they all had empty parking lots.  I guess Richmonders have started to prefer going to church on Christmas Eve rather than Christmas Day.  In any case...

Today's music was provided by a female cantor, a women at the piano who also sang "back-up" every now and then, an organist, a cello player and someone on handbells.  It was fun watching the handbell ringer decide which note, which bell to come in on during the melody lines.  I could just tell she was wishing that Santa had brought her a couple of extra sets of hands.  For the Order of the Mass, they used a very Stephen-Schartz-like setting.  The pianist was actually sort of rocking out on it, while the organist played along.  -I think the cellist just played melody when she could.

Then came Communion: "OK.  Please join us in singing "Silent Night". We're going to sing verses one, two, and three.  But after verse three, you all keep humming "Silent Night" because we're going to sing something else that goes along with it."

<the piano plays the intro>
Silent Night, Holy Night
<the organist comes in... in the wrong key>
All is calm, All is bright
Round yon Virgin

<the organist comes in again... in the wrong key>
....

2nd verse
<the organist comes in again.... and again in the wrong key>
...

3rd verse
<the organist comes in... Hallelujah! The right key this time!>

During the first two verses, I started looking around the church to see if anyone else was noticing that something was not right.  Well, I didn't have to look around too much.  Some of the lay people on the altar were looking at each, and slightly giggling.  Even one of the priests kept looking over at the organist to see what was going on.  Well...

<finish the 3rd verse>
"OK - remember keep humming "Silent Night" while we do our thing."

Well, the cantor and the pianist started doing their own thing.  And the organist started doing her own thing as well.  And never did the twain ever meet.  Three counter-melodies later...

"OK.  We're done, now let's all sing the first verse again."

Silent Night...

At least they all ended together, and that's what counts.

:)

...And then for the postlude, the organist started playing Widor's Toccata... Then she started to superimpose "O, Come All Ye Faithful" on top of that.  Well, sort of.   ;)

I'm back from the Raines event, which was quite festive until one of the producers of the LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS revival showed up, and I got tired of her deliberate rudeness.  She carries around the arrogance and superiority of one who knows with great certainty that on her death the word c**t will be removed forever from the English language, and I get a little tired of her pointed rudeness to me whenever we have the misfortune to meet, usually once a year since she's a good friend of Dona Raines. Her husband, who's a good actor and a gentleman may feel the same as his wife, but I never get the deliberate cold should that she so gracefully throws in my direction, knowing I can do nothing there about it.  The rest of the guests, actors and friends from the opera world were quite delightful.

And now i'm off to a wonderful event n West 43rd Street.

After Church, we tried to find a grocery store that was open since my Mom wanted to buy a birthday cake for my niece, Alexandra, since her birthday was yesterday.  Ukrop's, closed. Food Lion, closed.  Wal-mart, closed (which sort of surprised me, at least.)  Well, Walgreens was open, so we stopped in there.  They didn't carry cakes, but they did carry Duncan Hines Cake Mix, Frosting, a baking pan, and birthday candles.

Once we got home, I made the cake.  Of course, trying to track down the measuring cups was "fun".  Additionally, my mom had no idea where she put her hand-mixer, so I whisked it all up by hand.  -With a very small whisk.  The cake is still cooling, and we'll frost it in a little bit.

The "gang" is due here around 5:00, and I think I'm going to take a little nap, or least just veg while I can.

A very Merry Christmas to All;from work at the hospital; I don't know what I recieved for xmas, other than a 100$ gift cert at Borders from my sis, which will go to Mordecai Richler essays and some Bway Cds; I'll unwrap the rest at home tonite. En rout to work this AM I listened to the wonderful Bobby Darin Christmas album, re-issued on CD last year. Where most pop albums of the era have 6 silver jingles and 6 carols, Darin has all traditional music, but half the songs  are backed by a rockin' gospel choir. Last night, having Christmas eve dinner with my friends the monks, I tried to explain to a sister from Belfast how "My Favorite Things" insinuated its way onto the list of pop Christmas standards. She's lucky she was Irish and a sister, 'cause even at this blessed time of the year I don't take kindly to any dissing of Rodgers and Hammerstein.

SWEENEY TODD is pretty close to magnificent, I found. I never would have dreamed the show would come to the screen in as effective a production as this. And that local reviewer was wrong about pitch problems for the principals. They were on pitch as far as I could tell.

I thought "By the Sea" was the best sequence in the production, beautifully conceptualized and realized. I don't remember others mentioning it, but I really loved it.

If I had any reservations at all, it was about Helena Bonham Carter. She does the part OK, but because the story is so very grim, her subdued interpretation loses the humor of the piece for me. And when she sings fast, the words do get garbled. Depp was much better than I ever thought he could be doing this part.

And, of course, as magnificent as the score is, I missed the deletions. "A Little Priest" is such a riotous number that losing half the verses again robs the story of some much needed humor, even if it's gallows humor. Still, with the theatrical videotape and this movie version once it appears on DVD, I'll be content with the SWEENEY representation I have in my home.

I decided to watch the two episodes that featured Ray Wise as the cagey attorney and the episode that featured the appearance of Estelle Pope herself.

These are all brilliant episodes with tight mysteries and superb ensemble playing.

We didn't mention it the other day, but it's no wonder THE CLOSER got a SAG nomination for Best TV Ensemble. It certainly deserves it.

I also went to see SWEENEY today. But I didn't have the same reaction as DR MattH.  I just thought the movie was okay.

I love Sondheim. And SWEENEY is one of my favorites on stage. And i love the music.  But i just found the film so grim.  It was so dark.  And it wasn't the story. It was the way the film was made.

I thought the singing was good. But i wish they had cast someone else as Mrs. Lovett.

I really was hoping to love this movie.  But i don't think Tim Burton is for me.

Although i did see the trailer for MAMMA MIA and think that looks good!

I am so hoping that "Sweeney Todd" works as a movie. "Dreamgirls" (at least to me) was so bad bad bad. I've not been game enough to watch Hairspray. (I quite enjoyed the old film but have never warmed to the musical on CD - a bit like Thoroughly Modern Millie and Legally Blonde - entirely unnecessary).

(I'll keep in mind that any version of Sweeney Todd without Patti must have considerable merit).  We have to wait for another month here in OZ

I'm almost in complete agreement with DR Matt H about SWEENEY TODD.
The audience I was in, and I, were indeed laughing at Mrs. Lovett's jokes - and it was a sparse audience, yet attentive.
I believe that one of the reasons the film is drawing such a diverse reaction is that it is a film which requires the audience to PAY ATTENTION.  To get the lyrics, to get the jokes, to get the subtlety, attention must be paid - and most of today's audiences don't want to pay attention, they want the instant gratification of a popcorn movie.  SWEENEY TODD is a lot of things, but, popcorn it isn't!

There are a few things I missed from the stage show, and I'm not so sure that "God That's God" works as well without a chorus.

Still, it's not a movie which takes place in the pupil of Toby's eye, nor is it a static filmed musical, the leads are the appropriate ages not a generation too old for their roles.

SWEENEY TODD is now my favorite Tim Burton film - it's his vision, but, it enhances the brilliance of Sondheim's music and lyrics without reverting to tricks to make a film musical sing.
Title: Re:MERRY CHRISTMAS (AND NO STIRRING)
Post by: Jennifer on December 25, 2007, 03:55:49 PM
I think HAIRSPRAY and DREAMGIRLS were much more for mainstream audiences.  I think that regular people who enjoy musicals could easily love those.

I actually like most things that i see.  And while i did enjoy SWEENEY TODD i left disappointed.  And I love this show.  I do think that something that DR JOSE (i believe) said is true. If you are a fan of Tim Burton's style of movies that will affect how you feel here.

I will say one thing that bothered me. The stark make-up.  I was completely distracted by the white make-up painted on Johnny Depp (and Helena's) faces. Did not like this at all.

One thing i did like though was Anthony. At first he struck me as not who i would have thought of to play this part. But he totally won me over (especially his singing).

Yesterday we went to my aunt's house for Christmas Eve dinner.

I don't celebrate Christmas per se. But my uncle does, as does my sister's husband.  So we always have a big party on the 24th.

I must say I am really looking forward to Boxing Day tomorrow.  Thankfully i will be nowhere near the electronics stores (that is a pure mob scene).

The one bad thing is that even though it is the biggest shopping day of the year in Canada, stores only open at 1pm. I hate this.

Although we did find out that two stores will be opening at 10am. So at least we can go there before the mall opens.

Btw, even though the stores only open at 1pm the mall will be packed by noon. I"m not sure why but i love this. I think it's hilarious that everyone just walks around ready for the stores to open.

Actually some stores do open between noon and 1pm (even though they are not supposed to). That is fun too (seeing which ones are open early).

Back from Anglican Christmas Morning mass, Enchanted with my "girl" relatives, and supper at my mom's.  At the movie, I sat between my sister and her daughter, my DN Laura who was with me on my first HHW visit in NYC (for Jewish Thighs on Broadway) and who lurks here occassionally.  They both got all the Disney references and loved the movie.  Laura brought me home and came in to see the BK birthday video.  She thought it was very clever and said to tell you all HI.

For Christmas I received a Barnes & Noble gift card, an L. L. Bean gift card, several ornaments, the Hairspray DVD, and a Christmas in New York pop-up book, which is exquisite.

Watching Mod Squad episodes - I must say I find them very enjoyable.  One episode was filmed on a construction site for a high rise then being built.  I was determined to figure out where it was.  Finally, they did a shot where I could see a Pep Boys, then they did another shot and I could clearly see the Cinerama Dome.  I don't know why, but I surmised I was looking west and that it was the high rise on the southeast corner of Sunset and Vine.  But the proximity to the Dome seemed off.  Then they did a shot from the top girders and I could see Cahuenga and Cole.  So, I drove down there and realized immediately that in order for their to be a nearby Pep Boys it could not have been at Vine and that the shot had to be looking east rather than west.  In fact, it was on Cole, a high rise that was obviously finished in 1968, one block from what is now Amoeba.  And, right across the street from the high rise was a green building that is now SIR Studios and which was formerly Pep Boys.  In fact, when we rehearsed Joan Ryan's act there, I remember remarking you could still see the Pep Boys sign.

Stage one of Christmas dinner is now complete.  -We're still waiting for my brother, Don, to arrive with his daughter - and new puppy.  Needless to say, he got a late start heading down from Fairfax.

In the meantime, we enjoyed a meal of grilled chicken breasts, grilled New York Strips*, roast turkey, lechon** (roast pig), pancit (Filipino spaghetti ;)), fried rice, steamed white rice, and green beans.  We're hold off on dessert until later.

*My Dad is very fond of marinating steaks.  -Even those cuts of steak that just need to be seasoned with salt and pepper before being put on the grill.  Alas, I think the vinegar-based marinade he used sort of toughened the meat, but they tasted fine.

**The lechon, roast pig, was actually cooked by some friends of my brother.  In Puerto Rico!  His friend's mother roasted, then froze it, then shipped it overnight packed in dry ice to the States.   I'm not sure just how legal that all is, but it was pretty tasty.  :)

Ah, but  DR Jennifer, did you notice that with each progressive slaying, the make-up on Johnny Depp's Sweeney gets closer to a natural flesh-tone?

I think that it's also possible to be a fan of Tim Burton's film-making style and still be a fan of Sondheim, who did originally set out to create "a musical thriller" in the Grand Guignol style.

In the words of Eric Carmen, all by myself....

I've had an insanely busy last few weeks and I still have another week of two a day Cinderellas to get through.  Last night I had two services to play (including an 11 p.m.), where, thankfully, I played in the right key ;).  Then today we of course were woken at the veritable crack by the kids.  I've had a splitting headache all day as a result.  I just got back from playing an exquisite private party at a very plush residence in a tony neighborhood I had never been to before.  You would not believe the size of some of the houses--it reminded me of the "polygamy" houses that dot the hills outside of SLC--you know, 10,000+ SF numbers.  This place had a very serviceable Yamaha grand and they were very attentive, which was nice, plus the hostess paid me more than agreed upon and asked me to reserve next Christmas for them, so I guess I did alright.  ;)

I'm thinking power ballad. . .maybe late 60s or 70s. . .

Then we hied ourselves to the TV set and watched ELF...I had never seen ELF before, but it is now among my favorite films! I never laughed so hard!

Merry Christmas, my very dear HHW friends!

I have just returned from having Christmas Dinner with Thelma and her family.  A merrier time could not have been had!

There was food!  Oh yes, there was LOTS of food—Honey Baked ham, sweet potato casserole, broccoli casserole and cookies/cakes/pies!  Oh my!

There also was much talking and laughing and a good time was had by all.  I was quite sorry to have to leave but I have to go to work on the morrow so I had to take my leave.

Which also means I must also make just this quick appearance and leave HHW as well.

I hope everyone had a wonderful day.

Talk with you all later.

Hugs!!!!

Well, OK, then.  I of course knew the Sergio/Stevie connection (it's "New Brasil '77," featuring "Real Thing" and "Love City," co-written by Stevie, and Stevie plays and sings on "Real Thing").  I absolutely detested the Will Smith film, so I don't think I ever saw a video from it.

In any case, no, that's not the connection (at least not the one I'm thinking of).   ::)

I remember watching the show when I was a wee, bit of a twig of a lad. I borrowed some of her old VHS tape releases of assorted episodes and thought they were a lot of fun.

Actually, my favorite part of the show is the beginning credits where it shows all the characters running.

Wow! Except for the intentional rudeness of a total bitch, it's been a wonderful day.  I got to the Raines' event around noon and visited with my conductor friend Evans Haile and Mr & Mrs Jeffrey Wells. Jeff is a baritone doing three roles at the Met this year, and Evans is a conductor who's been managing the summer theatre on the Cape, the Cape Playhouse. Shortly thereafter, John and Judy Margolis showed up and I love them.  Judy is on the staff of the Metropolitan Opera, and John's a stage director.  This led to a long discussion of SWEENEY TODD, and Simon and Nancy Jones and their son Tim arrived.  Tim is Charlotte's age, and Simon was the lead in the original BBC production of HITCHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY as well as the film of PRIVATES ON PARADE.  His wife Nancy used to manage Monty Python.  We all raved some more about SWEENEY, and I believe Simon, possibly Nancy, John, and I will see ENCHANTED this week, possibly Friday afternoon.  Simon just got back from doing a role  in a new Brian Friel play at the Guthrie.

Then the producers - a husband and wife team -showed up. While I was talking to Evans, the producer wife came up to us, said hello to Evans, talked to him for 5 minutes or so, pointedly ignoring me, and left.  I debated throwing her to the floor and jabbing a plastic fork into her neck but I figured it wouldn't do more than provoke her.  After that, she seated herself on the sofa and held court.  I figured it was time to leave and head over to Skip and Fred's where I knew the festivities would be fantastic!

And so they were: lots of wonderful food and dear friends, including a new friend Brian (I forget the last name!) who's able to hold his own in th noisy banter between Milla, the lovely DR Julie, Fred, and me.  Later Bill Parry and Maureen Silliman arrived.  I love Maureen and it was great to see Bill, whom I hadn't seen in close to twenty years.  Skip prepared a wonderful dinner and it was a great group of people. Gossip, grudges, and wishes were freely passed about and Skip and Fred are truly the social leaders of the most wonderful salon in Manhattan.  Another epic event to remember and cherish.  Thank you, gentlemen.

The song I'm thinking of is quite appropriate for today, especially in light of some of the posts we northwesterners are making.  (And I didn't say chromatic, as in consecutive half steps in one direction--just consecutive half steps, hint, hint, nudge, nudge say n'more).

Jennifer, I am confused about one thing you wrote.  You say you are a fan of the Broadway musical, and yet you say the make-up of Mr. Depp and Ms. Bonham Carter bothered you.  I would say that the make-up of Len Cariou (or George Hearn) and Angela Lansbury were also quite stark and totally different than most of the other characters in the musical.  Now, I haven't seen the film, but from seeing the trailer, I thought the leads looked about the way I would have expected them to look.

I just wonder why the make-up bothered you in the film, but not in the stage production?

Elmore, just curious--are the dragon lady's initials B.O. (how appropriate)?

No.  A.D.  As in Amy Danis.

I've enjoyed reading the various takes on SWEENEY TODD. I particularly liked TD's comments that one must pay attention. I think that's very true. This is not a mindless movie. The score requires engagement, something some movie-goers may not be accustomed to. It's much more than just a catchy tune. It needs a different sort of audience.

Suddenly I am not feeling so well.....but I am not sure why.

Best Christmas present this year:

Lithographs of original costume sketches from Gone With the Wind, signed by designer Walter Plunkett.

And of course, Molly and Austin who got them for me, got NOTHING from me thanks to USPS.

Did you read your book?

I also went to see SWEENEY today. But I didn't have the same reaction as DR MattH.  I just thought the movie was okay....Although i did see the trailer for MAMMA MIA and think that looks good!
But would you want to see them both on a double bill?

what's the connection between Sergio Mendes and Wild, Wild West?

They were both shown in Brasil in '.66

"Boxing Day" here in OZ.
I shall be listening to the "Rothschilds"
I'd think for Boxing Day you'd want to listen to Golden Boy.

(Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Had a lovelier than lovely dinner at my best friend John's house. We had lasagna, of all things. I think that's a first (having lasagna for Christmas dinner), and I adored it. I had two huge helpings.

Also had a drink that's new to me: mint julep martini. Liked it a lot, but who has that many types of cordials to mix with the bourbon?

Yes, I saw that trailer for MAMMA MIA as well. Liked the cast, and the show in the theater is a mindless hoot. Not sure how that's going to play out on screen, but HAIRSPRAY certainly did well last summer, and this is slated for summer 2008 so I guess they're going for a similar audience.

We did indeed get around to watching SHOW BUSINESS: THE ROAD TO BROADWAY, and everyone loved it. Everyone had seen at least two of the four shows represented in the documentary, so all were eager to glean any infomration about those shows they could get from the movie. Nice discussions afterwards about what we watched.

Christmas with Magic Mommy and the family went pretty well.  Magic Mommy outdid herself in the kitchen (everything was edible, including the prime rib roast beef), and a good time was had by mostly all.

Unfortunately, we have the older grandlad to deal with these days.  He now firmly believes that only numero uno matters, which gives him the right to treat everyone else with total disdain.  This has been a growing problem for some time, but the rude treatment he gives not just his brother, but both of his parents was downright shocking today.  Sadly, we now live in an age where corporal punishment is not only frowned upon but pursued by the law, otherwise I doubt any of us would have refrained from popping him on the noggin or given him a good, solid spanking.

Or maybe locking him in a room with Elmore's producer "friend" would be an appropriate solution, right out of the pages of Sartre.

Fortunately, der B and I are home again now.  Four of the five prime rib bones made their way home with us, and are very popular with our four furry friends.

One of my co-workers (Jeff, from the deli) burned a two-CD Christmas music collection, which he gave to a number of us.  It provided der Brucer and me with our travelling music, both to and fro.

In most cases, burned CDs like this are interesting mostly in the tracks selected.  Jeff managed to also get the tracks to flow well from one to the next - something our esteemed one knows is not easy to do.  Going, for example, from Bing Crosby and David Bowie singing "Little Drummer Boy" (including the dialogue that leads up to the song where Bowie refers to John Lennon as one of the older singers he enjoys), to Lennon's "So This is Christmas" was a good pairing.  So was Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" leading into Savage Garden's "Last Christmas (I Gave You My Heart)".  And the entire two discs played in this way.

One of the nicer gifts I've received in some time.

Der Brucer had the fun of guessing who it was performing the songs.  (He at first claimed that "Silent Night," sung by Stevie Nicks, had to be a chorus of Munchkins.  I had trouble disagreeing with him on that one.)

Yesterday was spent with my mother's side of the family and then today my mother and I went to my younger sister's house where she had a do. It was a pleasant afternoon of food, games and chatter.

I even played a game I had never played before: Blokus. A fun game.

My sister had a very large spread of food and if you went away hungry from her house, it was your own fault. She is a great cook and I ate way too much!  One of the more interesting dishes was the SoCal veggie bake. Very tasty.

And the stores in Fargo and Grand Forks are waiting for the Canadians to arrive tomorrow.  :)
