I'm still up because my legs are so itchy it's not even funny.  Why this is I have no idea, but it's really bugging me.  It doesn't look like I've been bitten or anything, but it's just impossible for me to fall asleep right now.

Lots of interesting posts yesterday.

RE:The Restaurant Website - I didn't see a contact email address either, and on the Readers' Remember page, the webmaster says it's a hobby and he doesn't have a lot of time to answer emails or letters, so maybe he doesn't want any more information.

The Walker
Enchanted

And The Song Of The Day Is: LOSING MY MIND
. . .which you can find many, many interpretations of over at youtube.

I noticed that bk watched the FOLLIES clips last night, and I share his reaction to them.
Unfortunately I did not see the original production, but, I have thankfully seen ONE production of the original book.  The production was at Carnegie Mellon's Kresge theater shortly after the rights had become available, and long before I began working at CMU; the mid seventies, I would say.  There are three productions done at CMU of which I have nearly virtual recall, FOLLIES is one, followed by late 80s/early 90s productions of NICHOLAS NICKELBY and THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE.
Seeing the opening clip on youtube last night, I was reminded that the CMU production didn't veer very far from the original's staging and conceits.  Simply a stunning production, beautifully staged even if the cast was too young by decades.

Good morning!

It was very foggy outside when I got up this morning, and, of course, very gray due to the expected rain, but when I stepped outside to get the newspaper, I thought I had walked into a summer morning - very warm and muggy (no wonder there was fog). This amazing December continues!
Title: Re:THE YEAR THAT WAS

I saw very, very few films at the theater this year. In fact, I could count them on the fingers of one hand:

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX

HAIRSPRAY

SWEENEY TODD

I thought all of them were outstanding movies.

Several others from 2007 have shown up on DVD/Blu-ray, and I've enjoyed them too though I wouldn't call many of them great. Among the best were ZODIAC and THE LOOKOUT.

As far as turn-off-your-brain fun, the best by far was LIVE FREE AND DIE HARD. Non-stop action, thrills, and laughs. I really loved it and thought it infinitely better than the last DIE HARD (WITH A VENGEANCE).
Title: Re:THE YEAR THAT WAS
Post by: Matt H. on December 29, 2007, 07:39:19 AM
I must also mention RATATOUILLE which was beautifully crafted and looked simply amazing in high definition.

I enjoyed the craft of '300' and APOCALYPTO (from 2006 but I didn't see it until this year) ended up being much better than I expected.

I'll continue with GUNSMOKE today and hopefully finish the first two discs in this three disc set by tonight.

I want to watch yesterday's AS THE WORLD TURNS, too. I'm not sure I'll have time to get to anything else today.
Title: Re:THE YEAR THAT WAS

Amazing watching an old half hour show like GUNSMOKE. They run 26 minutes, unlike the 21-22 half hour shows of today. Over the course of watching an entire box set of episodes, those extra minutes add up.

One of the joys of watching those FOLLIES clips was not knowing in advance which numbers were going to show up. Every second was a gift, one of the best Christmas presents all season! I am SO grateful that that person put them up for all to see.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And Steve slept in too, so he won't be by here to pick me until Noon.  Whew!  ;)  *The food won't be served until 7:00, so there's plenty ot time to prep and cook.  Besides, his Mom requested a "taco party", so besides chopping up the lettuce and putting out the rest of the fixin's, the only "active time" will be cooking the ground beef which takes no time at all.

You don't have to have seen a film in a theater for it to be on your list - it just has to be a 2007 film.

Good morning, all! I stayed up too late watching features on SLEEPY HOLLOW and I slept in.  I have no plans today except to attend an engagement party for Ms Kim Criswell on the East Side.  I know there will be lots of laughs, since Ms C and I can be quite rambunctious when together, and I look forward to meeting her fiance.  I have no idea who else will be showing up, although I do see soprano Anna Christy, David Garrison and George Dvorsky amongst the names on her email invitation.

TOD:
  ZODIAC
HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX
  SWEENEY TODD
  ENCHANTED
  NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN

As for the Topic of the Day...

(as always in no particular order)

"The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep"
"Dan in Real Life"
"Hairspray"
"Enchanted"
"The Simpsons Movie" - "Spidey-Pig, Spidey-Pig..."  ;D
"Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium"
"Hot Fuzz"
"Bridge To Terabithia"
"Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street"
"My Best Friend" ("Mon Meuiller Ami")

*"27 Dresses" - It doesn't officially come out until January 11, 2008, but I saw it this year.  ;)

Hmm... Coming up with that list was a bit harder than I thought it would be.  I know I saw a bunch of movies this year - or at least I thought I did.  I even checked the IMDB listings for this past year, and it seems that I missed a bunch of them.  ???  It also looks like I tended to gravitate towards more lighter fare, although, with all the "Oscar-worthy" movies out right now, I guess I'll be in for some Drama at the movie theatres over the next few weeks.

Kim doesn't live in London anymore?  And she wasn't married when she did?  Say hi for me.

She's still London-based; her fiance is an American psychiatrist who lives and practices psychiatry in London.  They're getting married, I believe, next week in Chattanooga.  Her mom died in 2005, as I recall, and her dad's remarried. Her mother was ill when I met her parents at Goodspeed in 2004.  Kim was fantastic in CALL ME MADAM, BTW.

Thanks Cilla, Dakota, Jeanne, & Jose.  I didn’t mean for it to sound scary.  It isn’t, more annoying than anything.  I’ve had this so many years it is just routine, those anti-inflammatory meds just kicked it up a number of notches.  I guess it’s leveling off now.  I know tons of people who have uneven heart beats, it doesn’t mean anything.  I would have liked the test to confirm that & given me an idea if the not breathing thing is related to my heart.  My theory is I hold my breath as I’m drifting off to sleep, in order to keep from falling.  ;D Does anyone else have that sensation of falling as they fall to sleep?

Jeanne, you could be right about a magnesium deficiency, though blood work has never shown one.  My goal in the NY will be to find some sort of extra magnesium I can tolerate.

Jeanne, you could be right about a magnesium deficiency, though blood work has never shown one.  My goal in the NY will be to find some sort of extra magnesium I can tolerate.

Jane, a blood test isn't a reliable indicator of magnesium because magnesium isn't stored in the blood. There are trace amounts there only. The only reliable indicators of magnesium are the magnesium loading test (two 24-hr urine samples back to back), also called the magnesium challenge test, and the blood ionized magnesium test, which is quite different from a standard blood test. This is one of the reasons why magnesium deficiencies are so common (80% of Americans are estimated to have a magnesium deficiency)--they don't show up on standardized blood tests.

Recommended reading: Carolyn Dean, MD's book, THE MIRACLE OF MAGNESIUM. Short, easy to read, usually available in paperback at Amazon for $10 or $12.  I've interviewed her, BTW, and would consider a consultation with her. She's in NY, but does phone consultations. Her website is carolyndean.com.

TOD:

I saw fewer films than usual in the theatres this year. A month or so ago I was trying to tell someone what my favorite film of the year was and nothing came to mind. It's wasn't a very memorable year of movie-going for me! That said,

Favorite films of 2007:
SWEENEY TODD
LA VIE EN ROSE

As for performances, I'd have to think about it--I felt so lukewarm about so many of the films. Yes, a so-so film can contain a stellar performance, but a so-so film also rather detracts in general, IMO.

I received a vile yet amusing e-mail from the producer, co-writer, and director of The Kid From Brooklyn - he seemed incensed that I had lunch with his star.  I don't mind him not being happy with what I wrote, but it's not like I'm a critic, so I can't imagine why he'd care.  Thin-skinned and his note was so childish as to border on the inane.  Perhaps I'll quote some of it, but its first line set the tone - basically, who do you think you are?  A producer, a director, a writer?  As if my not being those things means I shouldn't write about things.  The fact that I AM those things is probably something he could have easily found out so that he doesn't quite look so foolish.  Anyway, I'm going to respond right now.

RE:The Restaurant Website - I didn't see a contact email address either, and on the Readers' Remember page, the webmaster says it's a hobby and he doesn't have a lot of time to answer emails or letters, so maybe he doesn't want any more information.
Oh, I think he does:

Forgive me for being E & T for the past few days.  I think I posted on Wednesday, but I am not sure.  Wednesday, Thursday, and most of yesterday I was pretty much out of it.  It took two days for the substitute nurse to get a prescription faxed to my pharmacy, although she continues to blame the pharmacy for the problem.

I actually got out of bed and got dressed today, but I don't know how long I will be up.  I guess you would have to say that I had a major relapse of the pneumonia.  I have got to get well enough to get back to work on Monday or I won't get paid for Tuesday.

I also wrote a very even-keeled response to that silly e-mail from the director of The Kid From Brooklyn.  It was a very angry letter, even though he was accusing me of being a bitter, angry, and jealous nobody.  I informed him that while being a nobody would be in the eye of the beholder, I was neither bitter, angry, nor jealous - of what, I wonder?  I guess anyone who doesn't like his show and says so is a bitter, angry, and jealous nobody.

When I lunched with the show's star, he asked if I'd like to come see it again, as they've been putting in little changes.  I said I'd be happy to.  The director, at the end of his e-mail, literally said the following - "stay away from my production" - a little schoolyardish for my taste.  He did say if I was coming back I could just buy a ticket.  I had to remind him that I HAD bought a ticket the first time I saw it.  People.

I spent a large portion of the afternoon watching GUNSMOKE episodes. Very entertaining shows, and they look simply wonderful. The black and white is rich, rich, rich. And the image is far sharper than many things I watch on DVD now that are from current masters.

In one episode, this women was trying to locate her son from a Cheyenne tribe who had taken him at age 2. She looked familiar, but I couldn't quite place her. When the credits came up, it was Marian Seldes!

I continue to be amazed by the emotional potency of The Drowsy Chaperone.

Bob Saget was a wee bit ill, but a glorious actor.  For some reason, this was not a heavy-laughing audience today, but there's a realism in Saget's acting that made the show land even more emotionally than the times I'd seen the show in the past.  Saget embodies the sadness of Man in Chair's wasted life (you believe that he had been married, and that someone like the male lead in the show-within-a-show could have been a realistic love interest for him had Man In Chair not been burned to the point of pushing people away.)

Danny Burstein is just great, as always.  It's a hilarious marvel of a performance, as ever, and as so many (including me) have written about at length online and elsewhere.

Cindy Williams is just a little less daffy than Georgia Engel was, but a terrific terrific stage presence and (dare I say it lest it get back to Georgia Engel and Edward Hibbert :) ) a better romantic match with the paramour she ends up with.  This was my favorite rendition of the "older couple's" comic duet.  Danny introduced Skip and me to Cindy Williams, and on the outside I was saying "Bruce Kimmel asked us to send his love, we've worked with him on an album, etc" but in my head I was thinking "Aaaaaaaaaah, I'm really meeting Cindy Williams, I can't f****ing believe it."  She was so nice to us, and what a pleasure to see her perform so wonderfully!
Title: Re:THE YEAR THAT WAS

I'm sure he's made it as unpleasant as he can, which is a shame.  As I told him, I've gotten plenty of bad reviews from actual critics - it happens, and all one can do is not pay attention or, if they have some valid point that makes you look at what you've done and at least think about it, take what you will from it.  Same with the good ones.  But, if some person on a website, who has some history with musical theater, says something and has criticisms, I might not be happy about the tone, but I'd certainly think about what was being said.  The show has garnered pretty good reviews, but most of them have at least mentioned that the book is not the show's strong suit.

I had an irregular heart beat that they discovered when I gave blood on 9-11.  (It was all we could do here in the hinterlands).  I went through all the tests, was told I was out of shape - well duh - and that I have inverted T waves that turn normal when I exercise.  For whatever it's worth. They said I was fine and interestingly enough I haven't had that happen since then.

DR Jose, thanks for the comments yesterday. I never know what or how much to say here about the political whirlpool called Iowa that I'm living in right now.  It is what's going on all around me so it's what I have to talk about. I've tried to be as even handed about it as I can so as not to offend people while still describing the experience.

Your comments actually have encouraged me to go see Chris Dodd tonight.  I have wanted to go thank him for going back to DC and fillabustering the FISA bill.  Whether or not you agree with the issues, he was the only senator running for President who went back and did his job as a senator while the others stayed here and campaigned about how they didn't like the bill. I think he deserves to be thanked for that.

BK, Kim sends her love! She went on and on about your generosity to her and was quite adorable.  She looked fantastic and her fiance Brett is a sweetheart.  The party was on Fifth Avenue and 72nd and i thought it was on Park Avenue! Anyway, I got there, saw Kim's sister, her father and  his new wife, and a lot of friends.  Bill Burden, who played Candide opposite Kim's Old Lady at La scala this year was there with his beautiful wife Carol, who had played Dorie in the production of GREENWILLOW I worked on for the Utah Festival Opera.

I spent time as well with the director of THE SLOW DRAG, which Kim did in London, and her husband. They had flown over for the wedding, which takes place in Manhattan on Wednesday, not in Chattanooga, and it was this director who introduced Brett and Kim.  I also visited with Jan Horvath, understudy to Judy Kaye and Sarah Brightman on POTO, Jeanne Lehman and her husband Larry, Kevin Farrell, who conducted the KING & I tour with Hayley Mills, and his wife Carin.

The 14th floor was absolutely magnificent, a beautiful apartment with a fantastic balcony filled with animal sculptures and greenery.  Just as I was leaving, cabaret bon vivant Steve Ross showed up.  He always makes me laugh.

DR Jose, Anna Christy is gorgeous and a wonderful coloratura soprano from California.

Quote
CLINTON, Iowa — With the governor of a key battleground state in tow, Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton raced through the final weekend before Iowa’s high-stakes leadoff precinct caucuses urging activists to look past the primaries and back her because she can win in November.

I am neither in favor of, or opposed to Hilary Clinton.  However, it seems rather ridiculous for any candidate to start gloating about who they would beat if the election were held today.  The point is that the election is not being held today, next week or next month.

There are a lot of ups and down, glories and  goofs, etc., between now and November.

CHURCH?  You want to ask about church?

One time, an older woman sat in the pew directly in front of me, and she was wearing some sort of neck wrap made from the body of a weasel or some other long and skinny animal.  It wasn't just the body of the animal - the wrap was made from the entire body, including the paws and head!  All through the service, the glass eyes of the poor creature looked at me as imploringly as any glass eyes of any poor creature ever could.  My parents couldn't figure out why I didn't want to go to church the next week.

ALGOPHOBIA: A painful reaction caused by watching a Nobel Prize winner and former vice president predicting the end of the world.

Perhaps, some people should pay attention when told by Henny-penny, that The sky is falling.

Bes sure to tell Molly that you know me.  I am one of the dozen people who ever saw CHARTROOSE CABOOSE.  I was a big Edgar Buchanan fan.

TCB, they are talking about it because a lot of people are worried about electability. Who can actually win the election.

The birthday party for Steve's mother, Dora, was a complete success.  It was her first time in Steve's new condo - well, it was new two years ago.  She has some mobility issues right now, so it took a while for her to get up to his place on the fourth floor from the lobby of the building.  She had wanted to walk from the entrance to the central elevator, but already needed to sit down after coming through the front doors.  So, they went ahead and got her wheelchair for her, and that made things a whole lot easier.  -And she was also able to tour the place too from the comfort of her wheels.

She loved Steve's new place, and she really loved Steve's grand piano.  She played for about an hour or so, just reading through various books that Steve had around.  I have to say, she's quite the good sight-reader.

Eventually, the rest of the family arrived: Steve's two sisters, a husband, some grandchildren and a girlfriend.  Her grandson had brought some roses for her, and she was visibly moved by the gesture.  Very sweet.

As for the tacos... There were hardly any leftovers.  :)  I had a blast cooking again, and it was nice to know that my catering skills weren't that rusty.  Everything was ready at the right time, and I set up a good assembly line for the tacos.

For dessert, Steve had bought a Coconut Cake from the Vietnamese bakery in town.  It was not your typical Coconut Cake, more like a Coconut Cream Cake.  It seemed to be equal parts cake and cream/frosting, and most of the coconut flavor was in the cream/frosting.  Quite good, and deceivingly light.  We had also picked up a Pumpkin Pie earlier at the store, as well as some Breyer's Vanilla.  :)

It really was a wonderful party, and I'm glad I was able to help Steve out today.  And, tomorrow, he's buying me dinner.  :)

Now I KNOW that all HHW'ers were good as gold angels in houses of worship across the country when they were tykes - BUT was there one subject or sermon that caused stifled laughs....was there something the speaker said that made you bite your tongue to keep from laughing OUT LOUD IN CHURCH????

For my brothers and me it was:

Balaam's ass.

Well... I'm sure there was a sermon or subject that made me laugh in church when I was younger, however... If I went to church with my cousin, Richard, it would sometimes turn into a "who can make the other one laugh" contest during the Homily.  But I think my "favorite" memory was doing the Hand-Jive to "Now Thank We All Our God".  ;D

I said the same thing weeks ago when I checked the price. I will NOT be paying that for 13 episodes no matter how much I loved the series. That's as much as they ask for a complete season of CSI or LOST.

At some point the price will come down or a sale will occur to clear some stock off the shelves, and I'll snap one up then.

Sir Elton must have tied on a few. His face looks a little waxen.    ::)

TCB, they are talking about it because a lot of people are worried about electability. Who can actually win the election.

I understand the reason, Cilla, but it doesn't really work that way.  Eleven months from now who is electable in December 2007will not mean spit compared to elcetability in November, 2008.

Almost forgot to add Marion Cotillard in LA VIE EN ROSE (LA MOME) to my list of favorite female performances this year. . .
So, I might as well add Robert DeNiro's unlikely supporting turn in STARDUST as well.

Anyone watch that football game tonight? Sounds like it was an exciting one.

Yes, I watched it.  I guess it was historical inevitability.  The New England Partiots now have a perfect season (16 - 0).

We've been watching the two part second season opener of Man from UNCLE, with an impossibly young Rip Torn (soon to be woken up at the crack of dawn by my Uncle, attempting to impress me with his show business connections, LOL) and the kind of daffy Dorothy Provine.  Dorothy wears more clothes in this episode than some women wear all year.  :)

Today, my friend Margo and I met her friend Marsha for brunch at Darby's, a local and locally owned restaurant.  I had their biscuits and gravy (which I'd never had before...and the biscuits were HUGE!), hashbrowns, two scrambled eggs, and bacon.  If I'd known how big the biscuits were and how much gravy came with them, I wouldn't have added the eggs and bacon.

After that, we three went to see "P.S. I Love You," starring Hilary Swank and Gerard (the Phantam Spartan) Butler.  It was very good, and we all enjoyed it very much but all through the movie, I kept thinking that Hilary looked a LOT like Jennifer Garner.  Intersting. ;)

One of the joys of watching those FOLLIES clips was not knowing in advance which numbers were going to show up. Every second was a gift, one of the best Christmas presents all season! I am SO grateful that that person put them up for all to see.

Do you know how to save them to your hard drive (http://keepvid.com/)??
