Title: FAREWELL 2007/HELLO 2008!
Post by: bk on December 31, 2007, 12:24:23 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were nostalgic and forward-looking at the same time, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they, as always, are trying to assure me that they'll be coming home in the New Year.

That was weird - I just "ejected" my backup hard drive after it did its update, just like I always do - I saw the icon disappear, and I unplugged the drive - and got one of those ! messages that said I may have lost data or damaged it because I didn't eject it.  Say what?

Ahh.  I think I might have gotten a used video some time ago, but if I did, it's packed away in my garage in an unmarked box.

Our local PBS is apparently starting the Jerry Herman docu at 1030, so I'll have to tape it and watch on NY night. 'cause tomorrow's a work day...Agree with BK's comments on Sweeny, esp the performance of Toby...Listening to the CD in the car, some of HBC's dialog is inaudible, but overall I liked the flick......A Theater Binge in NYC last Spring-It was the best of binges, it was the worst of binges...LoveMusik, Utopia Marathon, Curtains, Deuce, ACL, Moon/Misbegotten, Company, Frost/Nixon, Journeys End, Redgrave solo. I liked them all, except for Mamma Mia, tho the Mamma in question was a wonderful singer....The worst part, downright traumatizing, was my exposure to cell phones, texting, glaring H2o bottles etc.It hadn't been like this my last NYC visit('02)Next time i'll steel myself in advance or bring valium or something practical. An advance Happy New Year to All!

Good morning, all! I hace few plans today, but I am going into the office this morning. I need to photocopy the pages from the 1935 auction catalogue in which Clifford Herbert put up for sale the original full scores to BABES IN TOYLAND.  Part of today and tomorrow, I will try to assemble a history of how the materials ended up at the Library of Congress.

I also will be seeing THE WATER HORSE later this afternoon, and then I will spend New Year's Eve at home, which is where I prefer to be on New Year's Eve.

Yesterday, I made out the check for the estate's legal fees, and my dad's estate is essentially settled.  I have to deal with his tax returns before April, but everything else is pretty much wrapped up and this was the major part of my calendar year 2007: losing my dad and a brother (well, technically I lost him in July 2006) and dealing with the cleanup.  Other unfortunate things that occurred this year were the trauma of moving the recording office and the limbo/stasis we seem to be currently in and how to resolve this positively.

The best thing for me this year was the NYMF production of THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X, which certainly jerked my career out of its period of mourning and stirred things up. The second best was meeting in person more of the delightful folk hanging out on this site and socializing with the friends I consider family on this site.  I was also lucky getting to work with Ashley Brown, Brad Haak, and David Burnham. and I hope 2008 continues the positive momentum.

Monday.  No, I don't have to work.

DR RLP and DR derBRUCER - I enjoy Ms Esther Williams movies, just don't understand them.  I certainly have a couple of favorites....Neptune's Daughter and Million Dollar Mermaid, and would never begrudge her the success she earned.

As for the erstwhilie G. Kelly and B. Peters....I think I wrote before that I thought Peters was brilliant as Dot in SITPWG, but that she grates on my nerves in anything else I have seen or heard her doing...including a cloying and annoying "Poor Butterfly" on The Carol Burnett Show decades ago.

Gene Kelly - okay as a hoofer, pretentious when he "dances."

Well, I agree on that. I also liked her a lot in the James Lapine film IMPROMPTU. I thought the role of the Witch in INTO THE WOODS was poorly conceived and that Ms Peters acquitted herself well with an ill-defined part.  However, I've seen her in THE GOODBYE GIRL and ANNIE GET YOUR GUN in which her voice was shot to hell and I really thought that I'd see the understudy in Act Two. AGYG proved as well that anybody can win a Tony; it was one of the worst performances I've ever seen a winner give,

Favorite happenings of 2007, for me...

my trip to Hollywood in March...I always, ALWAYS, have such a blast when I vacation in Los Angeles.  Mr BK is a blast to diine with and never fails to crack me up, and it is always fun to visit with DRs Adrianna and Cason and the visiting DRs Miss Karen and DR Musicguy (my official west coast travel guide). And any time I can visit with the lovely and hilarious Ms. Laurie Mitchell is always a treat for me!

...my trip to NYC this summer was also a blast...DRs Jose (my offical travel guide for the east coast), DRs (and hosts) Elmore and Rodzinski, Ben and Ant, Jason, Fred and Skip, are all so much fun to see...and the added enjoyment of seeing some of my favorite DRs, namely the visiting DR Ginny and hubby Richard, and DR loveable DR Singdaw was beyond compare.

Other then those two wonderful trips my hilights were interviewing some wonderful actors and actresses including the long searched for Jody Fair, Gregory Moffett, and Jewell Lain, along with Erin O'Donnell and Ron Hagerthy...all were high on my list of interviewees and each one was a delight to chat with!

As well, I had numerous interviews published this year...and that  makes me very happy!

DR George,

I did not enjoy EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU very much. I'm glad Woody tried a musical, but using old numbers instead of songs written specifically for the film limited it in appeal as many of his actors weren't very good singers, so the standards they sung fell very flat.

I believe Drew Barrymore did NOT do her own singing. In fact, as I recall, she DEMANDED a voice double or she refused to do the movie.

The biggest thing to happen to me in 2007 was landing a critic's job reviewing DVDs at Home Theater Forum. I began in February with the Criterion account. Soon after, I was also given the Disney sDVD account. By late-summer, I had also been given the Disney Blu-rays. At the beginning of December, it was decided that I'd take over the Paramount account and let the Paramount reviewer have my Disney standard account. So now I handle Criterion, Paramount/Dreamworks, and Disney Blu-ray.

For someone like me who adores films and television and loves working from home, this has been a dream come true. I don't know how 2008 could be any better.

I , of course, am not here as I am at work.  I have to work a full day and then we are off to our friends' home for an all night house party and "sleepover" with festivities to continue the following day. This is the first year in 20 years that this party has not been at my house and I am not sure if I am sad or relieved.

So I am afraid my E & T ness will continue until at least midweek
but I will be raising a glass to all of you and wishing you all

JOY, LOVE, HEALTH , PEACE and PROSPERITY IN 2008!!!!!

I made it to the last day of it...
I celebrated my 52nd year on Planet Earth ...
I celebrated my 26th year as Mrs. Murphy ...
I reached godliness on a funky, wacky website filled with funky, wacky, delightful folks...
I got to see Cason play Zubrick in The Brain From Planet X on a NYC stage ...
I got to see Cason play the Emcee in Cabaret on an LA stage ...
I started my quest for a Master of Humanities...
I completed the first semester of my Master quest...
I completed the second (practicum) semester of my Master quest ...
I introduced 23 kids to the joys of writing and performing three original melodramas ...

Why, of course, may 2008 be that kind of "for the records" year, too -- let the gratuitous posting begin!!

New Year's Eve morning greetings!  We're having a very low-key holiday.  Tonight we have plans to double-date with Rob and Mary Linda to see Charlie Wilson's War and pick up Chinese carry-out for dinner.  Somehow, Chinese food and a show have been a recurring New Year's Eve theme for Richard and myself, since even before we were married.  25 years ago tonight it was dinner at Dish of Salt on W. 46th St. in NYC and an evening performance of Evita on Broadway.

Tomorrow, I'll make a crock-pot full of chili and we'll watch TV all day - Rose Parade, Capital One Bowl (Go Blue!), Rose Bowl, and the Jerry Herman doc at 9:30pm on our local PBS stations.

...(and that this post just happened to add one more post to bk's quest for record-breaking posting numbers is just a coincidence ...) ...

TOD - 2007 has not been my favorite year, what with DH Richard's shoulder surgery, DS Rob's mono, and the (mercifully brief) illness and death of my mother-in-law.  However, there have been some wonderful periods of travel with DH Richard:

-Our trip to Washington, DC, and NYC in June/July, when we spent time with DRs Elmore, Jose, Ben, FJL, Singdaw, MusicGuy, MBarnum, and Jason, saw Curtains, and were graciously received in Fred & Skip's home and in Karen Ziemba's dressing room.

-Our trip to Nashotah House in July/August, when I got to meet Richard's classmates and attend their matriculation ceremony.

-Our trip to NYC in September/October, when we spent time with BK and DRs Elmore, Jose, FJL, Singdaw, Cason, Miss Karen, Vixmom, WFO, Ben, der Brucer, SWW, Edisaurus, Cillaliz, Samantha, Julie, Noel (hope I haven't forgotten anyone!), saw The Brain from Planet X, Such Good Friends, and The Last Starfighter, and attended the Plaza rehearsal with DR Elmore.

But, by far, the special-est thing that has happened this year is the introduction into our household of the lovely young lady Rob has been dating since early March.  She has been at his side through some tough times and is delightful to have around, both for festive occasions and for vegging out in the family room eating pizza and watching Jeopardy.

GOOD MORNING ALL!

As for the Topic of the Day...

When I started thinking about what I would write about, I really wasn't sure what I would write about.  Was there anything to write about?  Well...  I guess I was still waiting for the morning coffee to kick, because this past year has most definitely been filled with some amazing experiences, moments and meetings.

Right off the bat, when I returned to NYC the first week in January after my extended stint down in DC, I had made a quiet pact with myself - well, a resolution - that I would stay in New York City during 2007.  And I did.  Yes, I had my usual long weekends out of the city every few months, but, otherwise, I was a New Yorker during 2007.  And I have to say that The City has continued to amaze and awe and surprise me with its grandeur and beauty.

Work-wise, I've had some pretty heady moments... Getting to work on All About Us with Mr. Kander and that great cast and crew up at Westport County Playhouse...  Starting my stint as a rehearsal pianist and keyboard sub for the revival of A Chorus Line...  Playing for some "Stars" and "stars" at numerous(!) audition calls throughout the year...  Getting a last minute call to play for a workshop for and on the Disney Cruise Line...  Continuing my relationship with various casting agents and musical directors/conductors...

People-wise, well... Getting to meet David (a.k.a. DR singdaw), Amy (a.k.a. DR edisaurus) and her ever-lovin' Greg, Cason (a.k.a. DR Cason), Karen (a.k.a. DR MissKaren), Sam (a.k.a. DR Samantha), Adriana (a.k.a. DR AdrianaPatti), Matt (a.k.a. DR MattH), Jon (a.k.a. DR jhvw), Jeanne (a.k.a. DR Jeane) - I hope I didn't forget anyone(!).

...And continuing to meet up with - and Enable - the many DRs who live here in New York City and paid a visit to New York City this year.

And I hope to be able to put a real face to the avatars and screennames of the DRs I have yet to meet in person in 2008!

Well, I'm currently in the midst of wrapping up my 2007 here in Richmond - laundry, cleaning, packing.  My parents are about to head out look at cars - they have decided to explore some of the "cool places" here in Richmond on their own later this week.  My Dad's current plan is to look today (in 2007), and buy tomorrow (in 2008). ;)

I don't have much more to take care of here, but I do want to get it all done sooner rather than later so that I can relax the rest of the day.

Laters...

My car accident and injuries that prevented me from traveling to NYC to see The Brain From Planet X and everyone else. It also prevented me from going to Ireland which I was really looking forward to.

I don't recall if DR George posted his reaction.

I'm only about half way through the German cast recording of Wicked, but so far, with a few caveats, I think this is a better sung, better sounding recording than the original OBC!  The music director is the same as for the OBC, so tempi-wise, it's almost a carbon copy of the original.     But to be clear:  the score IS sung in German!

Yikes!  I hadn't heard that.  Thanks for the info.

Hmm... Maybe a nice end of the year walk is in order.  Hmm...

I have really enjoyed listening to this, also.  I left it at home, but I may go there at lunch time to get it.  I went to a friend's house last night and we talked about the German cast recording of Menken & Schwartz's Der Glöckner von Notre Dame.  I had to get it out of the garage, and I'm listening to this right now.  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE (that's three BIG LOVEs) this stage score.  Why isn't there be an English language production?? (aside from the obvious...Disney's direct-to-video sequel :P)

Speaking of 1970s TV Movies and Shelley Winters ...

I highly recommend the TV movie A DEATH OF INNOCENCE (1971). Shelley plays a mother who travels to New York to see her daughter (Tisha Sterling) who is awaiting trial for murder. Totally convinced of her daughter's innocence, she does all she can to help her. As the trial progresses, however, she begins to have doubts. Shelley gives a beautiful understated performance.

Following the discussion over at ATC with some interest.

Is it possible to render a stage musical successfully on film [admitedly, a completely different - and more realistic - medium] without using some sort of "gimmick" to explain away the singing?

I wonder...

Well, they've been doing it for years - it's just NOW because no one has the guts to just DO it.  Sweeney did it, Hairspray did it - Sweeney is not going to be a hit, Hairspray made its money back.  But, as I've said many times, sit a young person down and show them The Music Man - nobody will question the singing, more than they'd question Spiderman or Daniel Craig as James Bond doing any of the stupidly impossible things they do.  But so many young people today have their heads up their rectal cavities - they WILL accept these preposterous films that make now sense, defy every sort of logic, and which require king-size suspension of reality, but they can't accept a person singing in a film.  It is to laugh.

I just got that too many connections crap and lost a very long post.  I am really annoyed right now, but I know if I write these creeps, they won't respond, or they'll say they just had to do something for a minute and that I shouldn't get into a huff.

What I said was that Francois is an enigma to me.  He comes here, posts endlessly, then leaves for months, sometimes because of a perceived tiff with someone, sometimes not.  This is the longest he's been gone, but I don't recall any sort of tiff this last time.  I never understand why people do this, at least the ones who leave for good.  We've lost a few, like former dear readers Jay and Dan-In-Toronto because of tiffs that didn't even involve them, but because one of the tiffers wrote to them and kvetched so much that they took sides, which is fine, but left in a show of something or other.  But, people come, people go, like Grand Hotel.  Nothing to be done about it.  The disappearance of Rodzinski is stranger to me than all of it, frankly.  TPunk comes and goes, but Rodzinski has seemingly disappeared for good, and for what reason is anyone's guess.

Well, for those folk who griped that the marketing people at Warner's couldn't determine the market for SWEENEY TODD, I believe they will find the same quandary with THE WATER HORSE, a beautiful but very sad fantasy.  The previews and newspaper ads, with the creature wearing a Santa hat, imply a lot of fun and siliness involving a sea creature, and nothing says a damned thing about the horrors of war, fathers who don't return, and intense violence committed against a creature they've led you to believe is friendly, cute and cuddly.  There were too many terrified children at the 1:40 matinee and one monster of a grandmother who would not SHUT THE HELL UP and insisted on communicating with her grandchild at a decibel level everyone in the theatre could hear clearly during the bombings and explosions.

I loved the movie; it's  two-hankie.  I love Emily Watson, who was reunited with David Morissey from HILARY AND JACKIE, but I felt the movie short-shrifted us on several of the plot lines it was spinning.

I loved the movie too, and also sat there wondering about how all the World War II stuff would play out with the under 10-years old crowd and their parents.  And even though some of the plot lines were never fully fleshed out, I did find the closing moments of the movie very touching, and unforced (surprisingly so) - which made me cry even more.

I'm sorry you had to deal with a grandmutha at your showing, but if you'd like to see it again... I'm back tomorrow.  ;)

Always thankful.  I occasionally bring it up because it baffles me and when I am baffled I bring it up, otherwise I will implode with bafflement.

Speaking of baffled, I have listened to the cast recording of Young Frankenstein.  I was not quite perpared for its badness.  Even though the booklet apparently would have you believe that Mr. Brooks is now in the company of Berlin and Porter, this is a really bad score.  You can hear Glen Kelly trying to give life and cleverness to each arrangement, but it's for naught.  You can also pretty much hear all the role models Mr. Brooks used for his tunes - it's a veritible Name That Tune.  The lyrics are predictable but okay.  Mr. Besterman is a decent orchestrator, but a record producer he isn't.  As to the cast, I'm sure they all work hard on stage and I'm sure some of the deliver wonderfully, but on this album they don't.  Does Miss Foster's accent really appear and disappear like that?  Does Megan Mullally really sound like she was recorded at the wrong speed or is she auditioning to play Alvin the Chipmunk?  Roger Bart seems lifeless.  Andrea Martin is always fun, but here her material seems to fail her at almost every turn.  The arrangement of Puttin' On The Ritz is, for me, awful.  Certainly this is the most relentless cast album ever - it assualts the ear from start to finish.

My favourite thing that happened to me this year was getting back into theatre full force.  Though I actually returned to the boards in fall of 2006 in THE UNDERPANTS (my performance referred to as "impeccable").  February and March found me playing Orgon in TARTUFFE which I had also translated and adapted.  Both performance and writing were praised ("Charles Edward Pogue is nothing short of brilliant"..."A first-rate adaptation...Pogue's language sparkles with color and is ripe with clever crispness, making versatile leaps from theological discourse to the basest of double entendres...").  This fall I received accolades for my "robustly flawed" Claudius in HAMLET.  This January issue of AMERICAN THEATRE will feature an article about the production with a photo of me and Hamlet in the prayer scene.

Julieanne is currently in rehearsals for David Mamet's BOSTON MARRIAGE.  And I will be playing Ben Hecht in this spring's production of MOONLIGHT AND MAGNOLIAS, an account of David Sleznick locking Hecht and Victor Fleming in his office for a week while they re-wrote GONE WITH THE WIND.  My TARTUFFE will be done this summer in San Francisco by the African-American Shakespeare Company.

Tonight Julieanne and I will have our usual quiet New Year's Eve, just us and the pets snuggled together with a bottle of Procescco (which I prefer to champagne), watching all these award screeners of the latest fillms we've amassed.

HAPPY NEW YEAR ONE & ALL!

I'm trying to decide what to watch tonight: Kathy Griffin, Strauss' opera SALOME with Teresa Stratas, or the Royal Ballet performing NUTCRACKER or SYLVIA.  Hmmm . . .

And for an interesting(!) review of "Sweeney Todd", here's one that was just posted on the Sondheim listserv from the World Socialist Web Site:

Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street] (http://www.wsws.org/articles/2007/dec2007/swee-d31.shtml)

Well, nothing like a Socialist for no sense of humor or, frankly, a good sense of literature: Berg's LULU, which ends with, but wasn't inspired by, Jack the Ripper, is a condensed adaptation of Frank Wedekind's two LULU plays, which he doesn't mention! Nor does he mention the great film of the plays, PANDORA'S BOX, with Louise Brooks.  Or did I miss that?

Larry there was a TV report last night on a "lost" opera - Helene -written for Nellie Melba (Saint-Saens) - it is to be recorded here next month.  The opera will possibly be staged in Vienna. I've already forgotten the name of the young Australian Tenor who will be on the recording.  He is doing well in Vienna and opened the La Scala season to great aclaim.

Question for the NYC HHWers...

Have any of you ever gone to Times Sqaure to ring in the New Year?

I've done New Year's Eve in Times Square just once before.  -WOW!  -And I just checked the IMDB to see which year it was... Back in 1991!  -Oh, and I guess it was more like "near" Times Square since I was actually in the Ziegfeld catching a late show of "The Prince of Tides".  -New Year's Eve in NYC watching a Barbara Streisand Movie - Can I be any more gay?  ;)  (No need to answer that question.)

I had driven my friend, Mark, and his partner up from DC that afternoon.  They were visiting from LA, and were planning on spending a couple of days in NYC during that trip.  We actually left DC around 8:00 in the morning, however, we had to make a stop at Mark's mother's house... Then we had to make a stop here... Then there...  Etc., etc., etc...  We didn't hit the Lincoln Tunnel around 5:30...  We exited the Lincoln Tunnel around 7:15.  UGH!

We ended up meeting up with some friends for a very good Mexican dinner at Mesa Grill - which had just opened earlier that year.  -And that was long before Bobby Flay's profile and popularity and increased - along with the menu prices at MG.

None of had any real plans for that night, but we all knew we really didn't want to deal with all the madness of Times Square - especially after the long trip up from DC.  So, we somehow decided to see "The Prince of Tides".  The late show.

-And, yes, sometime in the in the middle of the movie, lots of people started whispering "Happy New Year".

Once we got out of the movie... WHOA!  I don't think I've ever seen that much "mess" anywhere.  Of course, we tried to walk through Times Square, but since we didn't have hotel keys with us - and none of us lived in the area - we had to walk up and around to get back to the subways.  OH!  And that was also the night that the subway fares changed.  At midnight!  -None of our tokens - remember those? - worked anymore.

In any case, it was a memorable New Year's Eve, if not the most enjoyable.  ;)

*And I still remember being amazed the next morning when we headed back down to Times Square, and it seemed like everything was back to normal.  Those City Sanitation Workers really do know how to clean up after a party!

I think you and Skip live far enough West not to be that affected by the street closures.  However, if you find that you need to head out later, be sure to have some sort of ID on you that has your home address on it so that the police will let you in and out of the "area".  -That is if you head out between 11:30pm and 2:00am - I think that's the window of "limited access".  -You could also carry a party invitation with you too - as long as the person's address is on it.

-And I think the Pie Shop closed early today anyway.  ;)

the 1935 auction catalogue in which Clifford Herbert put up for sale the original full scores to BABES IN TOYLAND.  Part of today and tomorrow, I will try to assemble a history of how the materials ended up at the Library of Congress.

At the conclusion of the auction the were packaged up and given to the USPS stamped "MEDIA MAIL"; they were delivered Nov 15th of this year.

That's the story of my eBay wns when the shipper uses lousy Media Mail! Unfortunately, Clifford cared less about the score and more about the money he would get from the auction.  The BABES score went for $900 in 1935.

It was from your second appearance on Happy Days February 15, 1975

I was there for the year 1978 turning into 1979. . .or was it 1977 turning to 1978? ? ?
Oh!  it was the latter, 'cos I saw PETE'S DRAGON at Radio City Music Hall on that trip.
Had a standing spot up close, and wonder of wonders, a good friend of mine back home, who hadn't really known I was in NYC, spotted me on one of the channels broadcasting - she described what I was wearing (a camel colored coat with dark fur collar) and the people right next to me (a red-headed tall woman and a dusky blonde woman, shorter than the red head).
I just found the whole thing fascinating in that the whole of Times Square empties so quickly once the ball has dropped and "Auld Lang Syne" has been sung. . .

As for the Topic of the Day...

You didn't mention your time at the reservoir, or is that covered under the sentence, Continuing my relationship with various casting agents and musical directors/conductors...?

I don't recall if DR George posted his reaction.

I'm only about half way through the German cast recording of Wicked, but so far, with a few caveats, I think this is a better sung, better sounding recording than the original OBC!  The music director is the same as for the OBC, so tempi-wise, it's almost a carbon copy of the original.     But to be clear:  the score IS sung in German!

I assume the score is also played in German.  Otherwise, I guess you wouldn't know what you were listening to.

Happy New Year all!

I had to work today and just got home a little while ago.  We got off a bit early but I had to drop by the tire repair place.

I’ve been noticing that my right rear tire has been a slow leaker or the past few weeks.  I would fill it with air and then two weeks later, it needed more.  The place I always used to go to isn’t open on the weekends any more and closes at five during the week making it very hard to get to.

I took a chance since I was off early to drop by and they were open.  It turned out I had picked up a screw and that was causing the leak.  I have no idea as to when or where that happened but its fixed now.  It didn’t cost much—just twelve dollars.

I don’t think I’ll be up for New Year.  I’ve been up since five and I rarely make it past nine as it is.

I honesty don’t really feel much like celebrating anyway.

Someone is already shooting off fireworks outside and the dogs are scared.  They're curled around my feet.  Poor babies.  They don't understand the meaning of all that noise.

What a wonderful year, Mr Pogue!  Continued success.  Richly deserved.  Happy New Year.

"How pale the moon is, like a woman rising from a tomb"
"Your mouth is like a scarlet sash on an ivory tower"
"Your mouth is like a pomegranate sliced by a silver blade"

Much as I love THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, Oscar Wilde's decadent purple prose in SALOME, in English or in German, is an ordeal. Teresa Stratas is beautiful, petite, in an amazing performance, running from innocent virgin to coked-out ho in a ridiculous "Dance of the Seven Veils" and 90 minutes of the most overripe dialogue written by man. When she finally goes bonkers and the music goes bitonal, she looks like Vivien Leigh trying to get out of TOVARICH and then they kill her. The opera also includes a hot young soldier in love with Salome who kills himself for her, the page boy who loves him, Salome's evil mother who looks more butch than the soldier and her pedophilic stepfather Herod.  Jokanaan aka John the Baptist looks like Sasquatch and Salome slobbers all over him.  It was like a family reunion on God's Little Acre.  I think it's time for some Offenbach now, perhaps LA PERICHOLE from Aix-en-Provence.

T.O.D.

Hmm, well, health-wise, this hasn't been a great year.  Come to think of it, health-wise, none of my years have been very good lately.

Best moment of the year was seeing PHANTOM in Las Vegas, and then going backstage to talk to Brent Barrett.  That man is beautiful!  It may not sound right to say that, but let me tell you, when that man smiles at you - He Is Beautiful!!!  Also, getting the poster back in the mail from Brent signed by everyone in the cast was also great.

I wanted to keep all of the e-mails Brent sent me, but since DR elmore had already warned him that I was a stalker, I thought it best to destroy the evidence!

Looking back over the rest of the year, I think most of my memorable moments were spent right here, with all of you.  Thank you.

And now that I've cleared my throat... ;)

Good evening!

I'm over at Steve's right now, watching and listening to the New York Philharmonic on "Live from Lincoln Center" - they're finishing up with Ravel's "Bolero".

We ended up having dinner at the Peking (http://www.pekingrestaurants.com/) in downtown Richmond.  We had tried to order a whole fried fish, but our waitress mumbled something about it taking 40 minutes to prepare and that we had to call ahead.  ???  However, she did recommend the General Tso's Fish from their list of daily specials.  And it turned out to be quite a wonderful recommendation.  Basically, it was pieces of red snapper lightly breaded and fried, and then done up General Tso's style.  Very good, and the fish seemed very fresh too.

For dessert, we just came back here for some Breyer's Butter Almond Ice Cream.  :)

*Oh, and since Steve still had some money left on his Peking Gift Card, the whole meal only cost us $4.00!  :)

Where's Brownie with the light blue jeans?

Be wary of the full sensation from din-din, Bruce, that's what will make you logey and turn your rockin' News Year's Eve into a rolling New Year's Eve...rolling right over on the couch for a nice somnabulistic Snooze Year's Eve.

I found a box of eight small Christmas crackers.  If the lovely wife and I each use one tonight, that means we'll have enough for three more New Year's Eves.  Whoopee!  I wouldn't allow her to buy noise-makers today. I told her at my age, just eating the dinner I ate tonight will activate my built in noise-maker to ring in the New Year!

New Year's just ain't New Year's without Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians.  Is Dick Clark making the scene or is that over?

I saw SWEENEY TODD tonight, but I didn't see SWEENEY TODD.

What does that mean?

Well......we got to the very end of the movie and everyone was down in the cellar and the fire was blazing and Sweeney had just made a discovery....there was a closeup of his blood stained face.....the movie stopped, the lights came up....and everyone sat there.

Then a girl with a badge on came in and said that they could not continue the movie but we would be given a ticket good for a future movie....but not tonight.

Some of the other movies in the multiplex were also sent home....so who knows?

My parents had a family of raccoons in their attic. After my mother cursed and even ran outside in the middle of the night to curse at them, they still didn't leave, so she called someone who live trapped them and took them out in the country somewhere or the woods or somewhere and released them.  Then she had the hole they came in fixed

the first time I had a bat in my house, I got my neighbor to get it out.

the second time I had a bat in my house, I screamed bloody murder, finally caught him and threw him out the window where he flew away.

the third time I had a bat in my house, the cats killed it in about 2 seconds flat.

Fritters in the attic
And there's nothin' you can do.
Critters on the A-tack
And they're comin' after you.

So load the gun with buckshot
An' grab another chew
Ya gotta show 'em what's what
There's nothin' else to do.

Did Wrestling Women Vs. The Aztec Mummy ever come out on DVD via Image Entertainment?  I have check discs on it and several other Mexican horror films, but I'd heard there was some problem and that they might not be released.

I do recall Cillaliz's stories about the bats now. I had a bat once. Long ago and far away...I bought a house in San Diego County. It was on a hillside, on a lovely 2-lane road. The City decided the road needed to be wider and, in the process of expansion, cut down many trees. Lots of wildlife live in trees. One was the Bat Who Came to Visit. He flew into my bedroom. It really freaked me out. I couldn't persuade him to leave. Eventually a friend came over and got him. It was not a pleasant experience.

LA PERICHOLE was quite delightful but it was a broadcast from Geneva, not Aix-en-Provence.  Maria Ewing, then Mrs Peter Hall, is quite funny, sort of like Imogene Coca playing Carmen, with excellent French.  Her leading man was quite funny and very handsome.  DR MBarnum might have abandoned Bollywood for Neil Rosenshein.

One strange moment: when the viceroy's soldiers are hunting down Perichole and Piquillo, why are the Peruvian soldiers all wearing breastplates and tutus?  Sometimes these Eurotrash productions irk me.

You know, I don't think I've seen that episode (which has Howdy Doody in it) since it first aired.  I've seen the poker one a lot - are they on the same DVD - I wonder if I have it?
The Howdy Doody episode is from season 2 episode 33. The poker one is from season 1 episode 10.
These episodes were filmed and not video taped.

Here is a shot from the poker scene

The adults are all downstairs playing the new Wii and screaming (boxing or bowling i think).

If they can't tell the difference, it could be why they're screaming.

Shayne, do I have all these photos?  If not, can you send me a couple of good shots - I'm printing some up for the Courts show and am especially interested in Partridge (which I think you sent), and Happy Days, but I'd think shots with Ronny and the regulars would do best.

I went ahead and watched THE NAKED PREY. It's a very entertaining movie, and the Criterion presents the beautiful Panavision photography gloriously. Of course, when stock footage and second unit photography is inserted into the main footage, it sticks out glaringly. I'm sure some of that stuff wasn't shot with a Panavision camera, so it's cropped and blown up to fit the frame. Really looks, grainy, soft, and ugly compared to the principal photography.

After the movie, I went back and listened to the first 30 minutes of the commentary. I didn't look at the commentator's name, but he really loves the film. I liked it a lot, and it's unusual with the drum music track and lack of dialogue after the 20-minute mark except for the Frcian dialect which isn't subtitled. Lots of interesting decisions made by Wilde in producing this film.

I do adore Les Demoiselles De Rochefort - so charming and almost-colorful.  The DVD doesn't get it quite right and I think Mr. Demy would be somewhat appalled by his wife's restoration of this film.  Not enough blue - it's still got nice color but the contrast is milky and the transfer itself is old and should be redone.  I had a gorgeous 16mm IB Tech print of this film and know exactly what it should look like.

Last year, we were working on the house at this time, not being able to imagine ever living here. Now we're cosily ensconced and it feels like home!

We had fireworks here too.  Someone was lighting them in the empty lot across the street.  They looked pretty cool out of Steve's window and skylight.  However, they were a bit close for comfort since we think we heard a couple of the shell(?) fragments fall on the roof - which is basically Steve's ceiling.

T.O.D - I loved working in NY on the brain and meeting so many wonderful new people.
Although working to put the big fundraiser together was a pain and a half the end product was worth it. As usual I wish I had worked a little harder in school. Next year I am going to work on focusing more on attaining financial successes and making new friends.

Dinner at Anthony's Hearthfire Grill (http://www.anthonys.com/restaurants/info/NorthPointOlympia.html) with the family was good.  I had a $14 (one of the cheapest things on the menu!) hamburger (it didn't come with chili, though) and their bread pudding for dessert.  And the service was very good.  Afterwards, we all went to my sister's house and chatted for awhile.  Then I came home and here I am.

I have a question...does anyone else have the problem of pages taking a minute or MORE to load here on HHW?  Going to the next page, quoting, etc., all have the same problem of taking FOREVER to load. :P I have tried Internet Explorer, Netscape and tonight, I downloaded Mozilla Firefox and they all have the same problem.  However, it seems only to be on my home computer, not on my work computer, and it also seems to happen only in the evening, not in the morning. :-\ So, I would assume that it's just my computer. >:(
