Media Check:  in the mail yesterday, I received two items that I ordered from Amazon Marketplace sellers:  the original cast (a gala benefit for the York Theatre Company) recording of Busker Alley with Jim Dale "and Special Guest Star Glenn Close," and the first complete recording of South Pacific with Justino Diaz, Paige O'Hara and Pat Suzuki as Bloody Mary.  There's also a version of this recording with Shezwae Powell as Bloody Mary.  I don't know why they would just swap out one performer. :-\

Police, paramedics descend on Britney's house, singer hospitalized
 (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/thedishrag/2008/01/cops-called-to.html)

Quote
The rapid decline of Britney Spears continued late Thursday when police were called to her home in a reported dispute involving the singer, her children and ex-husband.

The pop star was reportedly detained by police and medics, wheeled out of her home on a gurney and taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

An officer on the scene told the Associated Press that the call involved a "family custodial dispute" and the police were trying to resolve the situation peacefully -- for several hours.

The pop star was said to be under the influence of "unknown substances," according to the Los Angeles Times.

Spoo, she did it again!

The man who brought good eats to Studio City:

Ed LaDou, 52; chef pioneered gourmet pizza revolution (http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-ladou4jan04,0,4287561.story?coll=la-home-center)

Quote

...
LaDou helped develop the menu for California Pizza Kitchen, which went on to become a huge success, with restaurants throughout the nation. LaDou's most enduring creation, the barbecue chicken pizza, is still on the menu, and now can be found at many other restaurants. LaDou seemed keenly aware that pizza was in the midst of an evolution.

"We are at the threshold of a new epoch in pizza dining, an epoch that will transform convention into invention and open up an infinite spectrum of pizza possibilities," LaDou said in a 1985 Los Angeles Times article.

Shortly after designing the menu, LaDou left California Pizza Kitchen and eventually opened his own restaurant, Caioti, first in Laurel Canyon and later in Studio City, where his pizzas and other menu items continued to win fans.

I don't know what plan to get, though.
Everything seems so expensive.

I don't need a million things in the phone.  I don't need a camera.  I don't need to have my entire mp3 collection on it.  It doesn't need to be able to make panini sandwiches.  I just want to make and receive calls, check my email, and access my favorite websites.

I think that means I need to get a voice plan AND a data plan.

DR Singdaw, I love the Metropolitan Room.
I understand what you mean about it getting very crowded there, though.
If it's a sold out crowd, the room can be quite packed, and you can really feel like a sardine.
But there are some tables that are better than others, if that really concerns you.
As Fred said, the tables on the upper level are less packed, although you then have a side view of the stage.  There are also booths line the back wall that are more centered in front of the stage and provide a great view - but comfort depends on how many people are sharing the booth.  Three people is ideal, and very comfortable.

It's really a beautiful room, and a lovely place to see cabaret.  The staff is also very friendly and accomodating, and they work very hard at being as non-disruptive as possible to the performer and audience when they are serving drinks.

Dyan Cannon is the sister of Portland bassist Dave Friesen, who first made international news with his collaboration with John Stowell, "the enigmatic jazz guitarist who live(d) in our basement" for about 20 years.  :)  John's brother Matt, whom I've known for longer than I've known John (probably close to 30 years now--oy!), once met Dyan and told me "She has the scariest old-looking hands I've ever seen."  So now you know.  :)

Page Five Dyan Cannon hands dance.

Someone needs to show her how to do a proper jazz hands.

Or at least a Kimmel hands.

May I just say, I believe I have given us an exciting new catch-phrase--Dyan Cannon hands.  Does anyone remember what the third part of this newly formed trifecta was?  I remember "Is it because I'm a lesbian?" (which, in fact, could be the reason for Dyan's hands), but I can't remember what the first one was.  Who's keeping score around here?  :)

I believe I may have mis-attributed the observation about Ms. Cannon's digital extremties (did anyone ever see the 20,000 Pyramid where Dick Cavett had the word "Foot" and his clue was "the pedal extremity," which was met with a baffled stare by his partner?).  I think the person who told me that was actually Friesen's sometime piano player Randy Porter.

I am looking for some new authors of mysteries. As most of you know, I adore both Minette Walters and Laurie King--both authors whose stories have a somewhat psychological bent. Any suggestions? Thanks!

DR Jeanne - I was working next to one of our Fiction Goddesses and read your post to her.  She waved her magic wand and came up with:

Frances Fyfeld
Gillian Linscott
Val McDermid
Kate Wilhelm

I have not read any of these authors, but FG used a very reliable source.

I've been up about an hour.  I've had cheddar cheese grits and sausage, and I'm drinking my cup of  coffee.

Life is very good.

The rain comes in waves.....hard, pelting rain, then drizzle, then mist, then drizzle, then hard, pelting rain.  Here in Oakland we hadn't gotten more than .60 of an inch as of 8:30 a.m.  Up around the Russian River, one place had measured 10 inches of rain.  It's going to continue unabated through the weekend, though, so our water tables ought to be filling back up.

Those of you out there with turntables and LP cast recordings.....are there any shows that you simply PREFER listening to on LP rather than CD?

"Sweeney Todd" is one of mine.  Something sonically more interesting from the LP, I  think. Probably not  "natural" something, but it's the sound that was part of the falling-in-love-with-this-score experience.  And I confess I LOVE getting up to turn the LP over.  :D

Next, I finished the two remaining special features on THE ROCK Blu-ray disc. The first was a brief history of Alcatraz (pretty informative since I didn't remember much about it).

The second was an interview with Jerry Bruckheimer where he talked about getting in the business and his first successes. He seems to have a very level head on his shoulders. Of course, with all the hit movies and the string of hit TV series on the air, he must be worth billions by now.

It's the first time I've watched it since getting the new set in September, and the picture was really razor sharp with sensational color. I keep hoping people will forget of its existence.

Kris Stewart e-mailed of his departure from NYMF on Wednesday.  One thing I'll say - he kept his ears open.  I sent him no fewer than 2500 words of suggestions about how things could be improved, many based on BK's frustrations, and he read and responded to the whole thing.  Here's hoping he leaves that memo behind!

I am looking for some new authors of mysteries. As most of you know, I adore both Minette Walters and Laurie King--both authors whose stories have a somewhat psychological bent. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Good psycho-thriller and historical fiction combined.

I feel bad typing this (since i know some people like DR TCB are in pain all the time). But I did something to my lower back and am in terrible pain.

I'm not sure if you call it the lower back. But it just under the small of the back.

It started to hurt on wednesday. ANd then got quite a bit worse yesterday. By last night it was quite bad and today it was very bad.

And it was such a stupid thing i did. I could not figure out at first what it was. But now i'm pretty sure it's this game of "swing" i played with my niece.

I've had a lot of neck troubles in the past. But i've never felt anything like this in this area. ANd it just hurts so much! :(

Good evening. Wow, when I got home there were no messages or hang ups - woo hoo! I did have a flyer from Hillary today. Day late and a dollar short.

Last night. I wish I had been feeling better. I helped out at our caucus, telling people which table to go to and sign in or change registration.  Our precinct went from 120 people last time to 230 people this time!  Lots and Lots of young people and independents and Republicans switching their registration. It was really amazing seeing all the people going for Obama. They were a bit fanatical about him, I just don't feel it, but they were so up and so excited. Something that is good to see.

The caucus itself it a bit tedious. Break into groups, readjust after finding who is viable. But it went the same way that it did over all. Obama, Edwards then Clinton. The rest weren't viable so they didn't get any delegates.

I was still feeling pretty puny with my cold and all so I came home instead of going to the party, but I hear I didn't miss much.  Overall, I have to say I like the journey better than the destination.  I'm never really satisfied with how the caucuses go, but I love all that leads up to them and I'm really glad when it's over and we can go back to normal

My take on the outcome is that everyone is looking for someone who makes them feel good about themselves and the country regardless of qualifications.  The pitch at our caucus to switch to Obama was just that. I feel good about the country and I haven't in a long time (this from a 19 year old). Nothing about issues just feel good stuff.  Huckabee is similar for the Reps. They both talked more about coming together as a country than they did the real issues.  People want change, but more than that I think they want a leader that makes them proud to say "Mr. President"

These are just my observations. FWIW

One last thing, Hillary Clinton ran, in part, on the Clinton presidency would be back. It wasn't always stated like that. Bill would slip and say when WE were president, then correct himself, there was a button that just said "The Clintons" that sort of thing. It was more than a subtle message but never explicit enough that it would end up as a sound bite.  I don't think people want to go back to that. They want to go forward. She tried very hard to say she was for change, but I don't think people bought it.

Are you trying to take the pics in "night mode" or with just Auto Flash settings?  If there are a lot of lights, you may not need to use night mode - slower exposure - to take the pics.  However...

If you have a self-timer on your camera, and a tree stump, car hood, mailbox, etc., nearby....

Speaking as a "people", I'm much prefer going back to the "Clintons".  We were solvent, had a balanced budget, had no war and had a strong dollar.  And oddly, the president maintained a strong approval rating even through the much-overblown GOP-bloat known as "MonicaGate".

It's been a crapfest since that time.

And neither Barack Obama or this Huckabee yahoo have the knowhow to bring it all back, IMO.

But if Iowans are happy, then that's all that matters for now.

Wow, it's really hard posting with a cat sitting on your chest.

Pierre was so happy to see me get home that he snarfed me.

I haven't been snarfed in a long time.  Well, at  least since the  4th of July week when I cat-sat for a neighbor.

Mister Mo!  No, TCB and TD and stickclaw, "Mo" did not stand for what you think.   It's short for "Moritz"....he was with a European family before my neighbor adopted him.

He weighs a ton...and he's a huge cat,  besides.  And when I would sit down, he would LEAP up on my chest and examine my chin.

But maybe that's not  "snarfing"???

For those interested parties, snarf is a combination of tears, mucous, and saliva. It can be used as a noun, verb, or even adjective.  For example:

Pierre snarfed me and now I am covered with icky snarf. I hate being snarfy.

Then I haven't been snarfed since Miss Vickie used to jump up on me and then begin grooming herself and me.

A couple of years....

Are you trying to take the pics in "night mode" or with just Auto Flash settings?  If there are a lot of lights, you may not need to use night mode - slower exposure - to take the pics.  However...

If you have a self-timer on your camera, and a tree stump, car hood, mailbox, etc., nearby....

....or maybe he could use his tripod?!!!
Title: Re:ALL IS WELL IN NOTESVILLE
Post by: TPunk on January 04, 2008, 06:46:39 PM
Snarfing involves a cat rubbing his snarfy face all over yours. Some cats have a relatively low snarf content. Killbot, for instance. Pierre has an abnormally high snarf content- to go along with his abnormally big feet and ears, and abnormally long tail. He is the biggest 7 month old kitten ever. Ever I tell you!!!

Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit. But he's pretty darn big.

I remember Dyan Cannon going on talk shows like Johnny Carson and Mike Douglas bad-mouthing Preminger as a sadistic fiend. I think she was ready to quit the business after making SUCH GOOD FRIENDS.

La Cannon's reputation as a diva bitch rather makes her opinions of Preminger suspect.  He probably wasn't easy to work with...and  I'm certain he wasn't going to kiss any Cannon ass as was her expectactions of most people around her.

Dyan Cannon is also the cousin of one of my best friends in high school, June Friesen.

Can anyone figure out what Dyan's real last name might be?

When we moved from Johnston to Greenville in 1957, we first lived in a house on Dixie Avenue in a now-historic district that looks much the same now as it did then.  When driving through, I get strong sensations of riding my bicycle  along the streets and roller skating a downhill sidewalk.

The best house I lived in there was at 28 Blythewood Drive.  It was on a street that separated my grandfather's street from the street that borders Bob Jones University! (BJU has bought up tons of neighborhood land over the past 30 years.  At the time I lived there, BJU was a closed campus.

This is our house on Blythewood (the tree in the front yard was planted in the early 1960s after we moved in and my mom had the yard  landscaped. Two scrubby pines were removed,  shrubs were planted and a couple of trees, too.  I never saw them get much taller than 12 feet.  But that was 42 years ago!!!

This will be my last photo this evening.  This is my grandfather's house on Twinbrook Drive.  Now, as then, it was a rather "nice" neighborhood for Greenville although it was much "newer".  Today, it has a slightly "overgrown" look to it with huge trees and bushy shrubs.  There is a creek that runs alongside the left side of the house and my grandmother had the far left bank beautifully landscaped.  A small bridge linked the opposite bank in the back yard.  I spent many hours of my early teens walking along that "left" bank while my folks were inside visiting/yakking with my "Papa"and"MaMa".

Sorry to hear this, Jennifer. If you're willing to try an alternative treatment, go to the health food store and buy a tube of Arnica 30C (30C is the potency) ($6-9). Let one pellet (=tiny pill) dissolove under your tongue--take no water. It's amazing stuff. Take 3-4 x/day until you're better, which should be fairly quickly, then just take as needed.

Signed,
Official HHW Crank,
Jeanne

Well... Then you MUST read "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay".  One of the most beautiful books I have ever read.  I truly savored each chapter, and once it ended, I wanted to HUG Michael Chabon in gratitude.

My, my, that's quite a recommendation. I'll look for it.

Jeanne, have you ever heard of a product called ACHEV - GH?

No, what is it?

...dissolove under your tongue--take no water. It's amazing stuff. Take 3-4 x/day until you're better...

Or die of dehydration from the taking of no water.

I watched THE PAINTED VEIL.....one of my favorite stories from Mr Maugham, and I must say I enjoyed this version.

I have seen Greta Garbo and Eleanor Parker and now Naomi Watts play the role of the wife....and my favorite is Eleanor Parker.

I am not sure how they photographed this latest version, but Ms Watts and the two gentlemen Edward Norton and Liev Schreiber all look homely and OLD....and I don't remember any of them looking EITHER in other films I have seen them in.  Story is still good....nice location filming, too.

A second vote for THE ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER & CLAY which was recommended here at HHW quite a long time ago by DR JOSE S PIANO....

Thank you, Ron, for the pics. It's nice to see the illustrated version of your holiday adventures. Really like your atmospheric landscapes, BTW.

I did not enjoy the Garbo version much at all. Haven't seen the others. One of these days maybe . . . .

I see I should have been more specific: do not take water with the pellet. Let it dissolve naturally under your tongue. You may drink all the water you like after a few minutes have passed.

Better?   ;)

Didn't read the article, but I am given to understand that Blu Ray is the thing and HD DVD is out?

Do we need to get new players now?

Apparently a wonder supplement.  This guy I was talking to said he had been taking it for 8 years and his arthritis has completely disappeared.  This is the web site, I have never heard of it before.  http://www.achevlabs.com/

I, too, like Maugham's work. I've seen the latest PAINTED VEIL, but not the earlier ones. Thanks for mentioning them; I just added them to my list.

Well, I wonder how long the site was down for - the dreaded Too Many Connections.  I sent a strong e-mail and thankfully someone was there to get it, and they "fixed" it without, once again, having the courtesy to tell me what the problem was.

Frankly, I'm really annoyed at these people, but they're so uppity that I'm always concerned they'll just say go elsewhere, and until I have an elsewhere to go, I can't risk anything.  I am seriously thinking of having the entire site revamped and redone from scratch - same look, same functions, but where I can actually do our interviews again, where we can have videos and better radio streaming - the site was designed in 2001 and the way in which it was designed and the software used is so old and outmoded.  But to do what I want is, I have to imagine, costly, and I'd have to find someone who was really good to do it - so that everything that is currently on the site could be archived and saved and available.  So, I'm going to start exploring this and see where it leads me.  Obviously, if i end up going this route, we would do extensive Beta testing to make sure the transition was very smooth and that everything worked perfectly.  We shall see.  Bottom line is at this point, with what I pay to have this site hosted, I don't want any more damn too many connections.

Well, then....let's discuss religion instead!    ;D

And DR derBrucer, any U.S. involvement in the Balkans was a mere skirmish compared to the bloodbath of Iraq.  At lease use rational measures when making such comparisons...please, for your own sake!

Apparently, I must have used my entire name when I was introducing myself to all of you at this site (way back when); because about a year later a friend of mine discovered this site by Googling my name.

Check your profile, Tom.....your AIM is listed as TomBirkeland.
