***DIETING VIBES*** to DR Danise.

TOD:  I suppose Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy would be a very different experience without Howard Shore's expansive, epic score.

Perfect Scores, GWTW, The Heiress, Streetcar,Psycho, Spartacus, Mockingbird, The Miracle Worker, Tom Jones, The Magnificent Seven; The Big Country has a score that's better than the flick and L.A.Confidential has a wonderful score, and the "source music", if that's the term, is perfection.:All accurate for the period and also commenting on the action.(Kay Starr singing Wheel of Fortune, just as the fortunes of the 3 protagonists go into reverse.)

Project Runway

Interesting challenge - I would have chosen a different winner and loser...why do producers think irritating people make good television?

Jrand - I guess because the more irritating the people are, the less need for the producers to manufacture the conflict  :)

Good morning, all!  I've had several phone calls this morning, the best one being from my sister-in-law JoAnn to tell me that Lady M has been behaving badly this week and even Macbeth is showing signs of wanting her made into a rug.  Of course, since she and he know where all the bodies are buried, it's a marriage sealed in hell, I couldn't be more delighted with this turn of events.

Today, more "Lady of the Slipper" attempts and, later, a bit of IRS tallying.

TOD:

Perfect score perfectly married to a film:  "To Kill A Mockingbird", "Psycho", "Vertigo", "Around the World in 80 Days" (1956), "The Song of Bernadette", "The Robe", "Ben-Hur", "Quo Vadis", "Spartacus", "The Umbrella of Cherbourg," "Exodus", "Sunset Boulevard", "Gone With the Wind," "Captain from Castile", "Son of Fury", "Prince of Foxes", "The Egyptian", "Anastasia", "An Affair to Remember", "Boy on a Dolphin", "The Cardinal", "Patton", "The Godfather", "Romeo and Juliet" (1968), "La Strada", "Far From the Madding Crowd", "Enchanted April".  For a few.

DR Elmore....just so long as Lady M's histrionics don't impact you or your health, I'm delighted to hear about them, too!   :D

Thankfully, she's too screwed up to just have problems with me! I gather she's pulling one of her outrageouse lies for attention: her narcissism is limitless. JoAnn tells me there have been police out to the house checking on her claims of a break-in attempt while she was alone.  Given that they live in the country, have a large and very vocal animal on the presence who lets no one near her, and there were five or six cars in the driveway, it all seems as implausible as some of her other stories in her desperate bid to be noticed.  Even Macbeth knows she's pulling something.  The poor bastard's stuck.  Hee hee hee!

The first movie that came to mind when I read the topic of the day was BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S, one of the all-time great score. And I'd add CHARADE to that, too, and TWO FOR THE ROAD. Henry Mancini had a way with scoring these sophisticated films that is truly unmatched.

When I return from lunch today, I'll be beginning the third season box set of THE ODD COUPLE. I just adore this show and can't wait to see these episodes after so many years away from them. Looks like I'm going to be able to throw away a single videotape of episodes from its five year run that I recorded many, many years ago.

TOD:

Albert Glasser's score from ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE has been a favorite of mine since way back when and it fits the film so well....and the score for the western DAY OF THE OUTLAW is perfect as well.

And although many dislike it, the score to PANIC IN YEAR ZERO seems to fit the film very nicely, in my opinion.

That is all I can manage to come up with this early in the morning.

Well, the Apollo Theatre is as 235 125th Street, between Frederick Douglass and Adam Clayton Powell (7th Ave.) Blvds.  Patsy's is at 2287 1st Ave between 117th and 118th Streets.  So... About six long blocks west and seven blocks north.  A "nice" walk, or a $5.00-6.00 cab ride.  :)

-There's a D.O. school in that area?

I'm sure Bryan can handle the walk, just doubt the time to make it.  He will be staying with his girlfriend at Columbia University.

Touro University, the D.O. school, is a new.  There are two other Touro schools.  Bryan also applied to the one in Northern California.

I was just about to post the above response to Jose last night when our power went out & I found myself sitting in the dark.  The power made a few feeble attempts to come back on last night, succeeding for a few brief minutes in the wee hours of the morning.  Now it keeps threatening to go out again.  I tried to call the electric company this morning but it seems we are now without phone service.  I would rather not have a phone than be without heat & water while the food in the frig goes bad.

The house is warming up.  I tell you, I really appreciated our big warm dog last night.

Danise, Sherlock feels fine thank you.  We will have to retest to determine if the antibiotics took care of the bacteria problem.  We got the results back from his allergy tests & were surprised to find he is allergic to peas, amongst other things.   Not too many foods, most of which we were not feeding him to begin with, such as corn.

He is highly allergic to Oaks & grasses as well as a slew of other things in the environment.  Oak is a big problem considering there are hundreds, and I mean hundreds, of oak trees outside our home.

Compared to CostCo...not really!

But then, I am never "near" an exchange facility.  The drive to the closest one is far enough (gas dollar wise) to negate any saving I might enjoy on something.

The commissary is a different story, I think.  If I had a large freezer, I'd shop the commissary...possibly once a month or every other month.

Mostly pencil & paper, DR Singdaw, with a little Word, a little email, etc.  It's for an organization that we're still trying to drag, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century.

Great! Now riddle me THIS:

This guy who was singing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day was supposed to be going to see his "Susyanna".

But one of the verses goes:

Behind the barn, Down on my knees
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day
I thought I heard A chicken sneeze
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day

If he was so het up on his Susyanna, what on earth was he doing on his knees back behind the barn?

TOD - I don't know if it counts as a score, but the soundtrack to The Big Chill is, to me, perfection.   Also like the score to An Officer and a Gentleman.

Great! Now riddle me THIS:

This guy who was singing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day was supposed to be going to see his "Susyanna".

But one of the verses goes:

Behind the barn, Down on my knees
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day
I thought I heard A chicken sneeze
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day

If he was so het up on his Susyanna, what on earth was he doing on his knees back behind the barn?

AND...

The chicken "sneezed so hard" that his "tail fell off".

Is that a euphemism?

I'm sure Bryan can handle the walk, just doubt the time to make it.  He will be staying with his girlfriend at Columbia University.

Touro University, the D.O. school, is a new.  There are two other Touro schools.  Bryan also applied to the one in Northern California.

Ah, that's right, she goes to CU.  Hmm...  There's a new location of "Community Food & Juice" that opened right on the CU strip.  A good place for a good meal.  Great brunches, and some pretty good baked goods - since the place is run by the same folks who operate The Clinton St. Baking Company.

*And there's that great little Hungarian Strudel/Pasty shop by the Cathedral.

What I find stupid about that rule is that even though a toothpaste tube may only have about 1/2 ounce worth of toothpaste in it, if the tube itself originally held more than 3 ounces, then the TSA is required to confiscate it.  -I saw this happen a few times when I was traveling during Christmas.  In any case...

As long as it's packed in your checked baggage, you'll be fine.

*And a friend of mine pointed out to me that a bunch of the high-end cosmetic lines have re-packaged and re-sized their "small sizes" in the 2.7 ounce range in order to prevent the "trauma" caused by someone having to throw out their $200+ tube of moisturizer.

That's one of my earliest CD purchases and still one of my most-prized ones.

Oliveira's recording of the Barber Violin Concerto has been repackaged a few times with other Barber orchestral works, but I don't think that Slatkin's recording of the Hanson is available in any other coupling right now.

I also like Gil Shaham's recording of the Barber on DG which is coupled with Korngold's own Violin Concerto and "Much Ado About Nothing" suite.

DR JEANNE,

Thanks for your suggestion re: the homeopathic meds for my back pain.

I was not able to go out, since i was in pain. :(

My back is feeling better (it's been one week) in some ways. But anytime i try to lift anything (even something small like a full glass of water) it hurts.

And being in a car can still be quite bad.

So i called the health food store nearest to me and gave them the name of the meds you suggested. They said they had them and that they thought it would help.

However, when the person picking up the meds got to the store there was a different homeopath on duty.  And he said that while what you suggested would be good. He had something that he thought would be better: Rhus Toxicodendron .

I told him exactly how my injury occured. ANd he explained how much he loved Arnica (what you had suggested). but he just thought that the rhus toxicodendron would be better in my case. So that is what i got.

HE gave specific instructions about dissolving them under my tongue (3 at a time). And he said to do it once (with a neutral mouth)(no food remnants and washed out).

Then he said to do that again in 4 hours.

HE also said that i could only take it for 2 days.

But that it was feeling at all better the 2nd day then not to take it that day. But if it was just a touch better than to do it.

I figure i will wait to see how it is tomorrow. And then maybe i will call and ask if i should take it again.

He also mentioned that it can be quite harmful to take it for more than 2 days. Which sort of freaked me out, since i thought the whole point of these things was that they were all natural and less toxic.

I was just wondering what you thought. and thanks.

I'm waxing nostalgic, and beg your indulgence:

"Hello In There"

We had an apartment in the city.
Me and my husband liked living there.
It's been years since the kids have grown,
a life of their own, left us alone.

John and Linda live in Omaha.
Joe is somewhere on the road.
We lost Davy in the Korean war.
I still don't know what for, don't matter any more.

You know that old trees just grow stronger,
and old rivers grow wilder every day,
but old people, they just grow lonesome
waiting for someone to say,
"Hello in there. Hello"

Me and my husband, we don't talk much anymore.
He sits and stares through the backdoor screen.
And all the news just repeats itself
like some forgotten dream
that we've both seen.

Someday I'll go and call up Judy.
We worked together at the factory.
Ah, but what would I say when she asks what's new?
Say, "Nothing, what's with you?
Nothing much to do."

You know that old trees just grow stronger,
and old rivers grow wilder every day,
ah, but, but old people, they just grow lonesome
waiting for someone to say,
"Hello in There. Hello."

So if you're walking down the street sometime
and you should spot some hollow ancient eyes,
don't you pass them by and stare
as if you didn't care.
Say, "Hello in there. Hello."

I did not read "pet" as a verb. (It's not used often in that sense in OZ).

Verbally, here in the U.S., "pet" is to caress, hug or to "make out" (i.e, he's in his "petting" phase!)

Of course, there is always the uppity princess who "gets into a 'pet'" (a sulk or grumpy mood).

Just heard that songwriter LEW SPENCE passed away. He wrote (with Marilyn & Alan Bergman) Nice 'n' Easy , Sleep Warm, Ol' MacDonald. Here's a link to an interview I did with him on the Cabaret West website back in 2001 http://cabaretwest.org/d_lewspence.html (http://cabaretwest.org/d_lewspence.html).

My listening pleasure today (OK so I'm a day early):

"Kismet" - Rush Ann Svenson & Jerry Hadley. "And This Is My Beloved"

I love this recording of the score.

I'm looking forward to the release of the movie version in a few months time. (I hope I can purchase it without the others in the set)

I began my afternoon of viewing with last night's PROJECT RUNWAY.

I did not like the winner's dress much. In fact, I thought many of the dresses were too short for prom dresses, but as I haven't been to a prom in 40 years, perhaps I'm out of the loop.

I was very unhappy for the loser as I thought the dress was not anything the judges said it was, and it was interesting, colorful, and fun. I would have sent Ricky home (short light tan dress with a band of beads at the waist.) I thought it showed the least imagination.

As for Christian's almost-losing creation, he was at one disadvantage: he was BARELY older than the girl he was designing for. It's a lot easier to tell a child NO when you're 40 than when you're only a few years older and look about the same age (and have the same demeanor). I figured he wouldn't be sent home, however, since his dres, despite its overdone quality, really showed a lot of imagination and careful attention to detail (even though the back of it was pretty bad).

Next I watched last night's CSI: NY. DR MBarnum, Matt Battaglia was one of the suspects playing a doctor. Looked good (even though through make-up his face was scratched by having a broom being dragged across it repeatedly.)

There were two cases and interesting but not riveting ones.

Next, I began the third season box set of THE ODD COUPLE. Just as funny as I remembered it being.

The season opener I might have only seen once in my life before. Oscar signs up for computer dating. He fills his application with lots of lies and then gets paired with Felix's ex-wife. This was the first episode that featured Elinor Donahue as Felix's new girl friend Miriam.

The second episode featured Howard Cosell as a guest star. Cosell and Oscar have a running feud going, and Felix gets caught in the middle of it.

Years ago when I interviewed Tony Randall, he told me that the episodes where ABC forced them to use ABC personalities in guest roles to beef up ratings were the episodes he most despised. I thought of that the entire time I was watching this episode which certainly was funny. He buried his resentment well. Cosell was no actor. You can tell he's reading most of his lines off cue cards.

The reviews for The Little Mermaid are coming in.

From amNew York:
Terrible direction. Awful new songs. Unnecessary rewrites. Adults bored. Children confused. In spite of Sebastian's seductive plea, stay far away from the sea!

From the London Financial Times:
The Little Mermaid barged on to Broadway this week - and neither sank nor swam. It is perhaps fitting for a fairy tale focused on a hybrid life form that its musical incarnation should be so thoroughly neither-nor. It's not squarely for children (too slow at times), yet definitely not built for adults (too lacking in wit). It is neither a travesty of the 1989 animated Disney feature on which it is based nor a successful re-imagining.

Just received an email from S'More Entertainment telling me that the upcoming DANNY THOMAS SHOW/MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY DVD Season Six release is taken from the Original Broadcast Elements with the Original Opening Titles....and will include recent interviews with Sid Melton, Marjorie Lord, and Angela Cartwright conducted just for the Set....and a 10 minute Out Takes reel.

This probably includes the very funny Annette-Danny Thomas scenes and the Angela Cartwright ALPHA BETS commercial filmed in front of the studio audience that made Danny mime shooting himself in the head after a few takes....

TCM really seems to be losing it these days.  First they announce a letterbox showing of Skidoo, only to show a pan and scan print.  Today, they listed Our Time, and because I worked with its leading lady (Betsy Slade) and haven't seen it since it came out, I thought I'd TIVO it.  The listing was Our Time, Pamela Sue Martin and Betsy Slade, and the plot of the film.  I wen to check the opening credits and instead of Our Time I got In Our Time, a movie with Ida Lupino and Paul Henried from the 40s.  How do you make a stupid mistake like that?  First of all, they're doing a Paul Henried day - so wouldn't you think that would clue someone in that a movie with Pamela Sue Anderson and Betsy Slade didn't fit the pattern?

I was just about to post the above response to Jose last night when our power went out & I found myself sitting in the dark.  The power made a few feeble attempts to come back on last night, succeeding for a few brief minutes in the wee hours of the morning.  Now it keeps threatening to go out again.  I tried to call the electric company this morning but it seems we are now without phone service.  I would rather not have a phone than be without heat & water while the food in the frig goes bad.

Next I watched last night's CSI: NY. DR MBarnum, Matt Battaglia was one of the suspects playing a doctor. Looked good (even though through make-up his face was scratched by having a broom being dragged across it repeatedly.)

There were two cases and interesting but not riveting ones.

And Frederick Lane (also Lehne) was guest star on "Criminal Minds" and was terrific as a mafia witness protection dad whose daughter gets taken.  He truly convinced me that he was a cold, methodical killer as well as a loving father.  I enjoy all his appearances on TV..."Ghost Whisperer", "Lost", etc.

I don't know what in tarnation is going on, but my airport is not recognizing my network and when I unplug the Ethernet cable from the airport and go directly into the computer, that isn't working either.  I'm on via linksys right now.  Nothing I do is working, which, of course, makes me very nervous about getting the notes up later.  I may write them very early just in case.  Of course, this happens right after Apple Care support is closed.

Does Apple Care really close that early?  -If anything, call your local Apple Store, and they should be able to forward you some open help line.

Those of you who have actually seenit (since most of you had not  at the time of my intial question) what do you think? Yea or Nay?

I have been hearing that the throat slittings scenes are really horrifically graphic.  The Vixter has a very vivid imagination and I would prefer that she sleeps at night rather than lie awake with every light in the house blazing   ;D

I'd say the throat slittings are certainly graphic, but Im not sure I would describe them as "horrifically".  They're purposely over-the-top, so...  And the color of the blood is purposely "bright", so...

Are there any clips on YouTube yet?  ;)

If the vixter knows going in what the movie is all about, then that should make it easier for her - and you - when she leaves the movie.

Well I have been scanning the GALE STORM SHOW episodes sent to me by DR MBARNUM looking for hot men and dance numbers.  I found many more of the latter than the former.

One episode was photographed by the uncle of DR JEANNE and featured a performance by the cousin of DRJANE's DH KEITH - Mr Ben Weldon.
Title: Re:THE MYSTERY OF THE GREEN WATER

I found the throat slashings rather numbingly graphic to be honest (I have a very vivid imagination and believe everything I see at the movies; I'm not one of those people who can tell himself that it's only a movie), and the revulsion intensified by the bodies then sliding down the chute and hitting the floor head first with necks snapping, etc. Now, I think that's EXACTLY what they should have been with this material and with this director. But it is VERY graphic.

Honestly, DR Vixmom, I'd wait four months for the DVD and then view it yourself first and make the decision. It's not like she's NEVER going to get to see it. So she has to wait a few months? It won't kill her. (Bad joke; I know.)

DR JENNIFER - perhaps you are the target audience.  I like to think I can enjoy something if it's well done, even if it's not for me.  I even like things are AREN'T done well, if they have something else going for them.

GOSSIP GIRL - or at least the little bit I saw - seemed to be a by the numbers chance for great looking young people with little or no acting ability to stand around in great clothes and pretend to suffer....but maybe it got better in the scene I didn't watch.

I have so many favorite moments I can't name them all. First that comes to mind:

Reta Shaw playing Claire Frost, the cleanest cook and maid in the world whom Felix hires as Oscar's nanny.

Oscar's reaction: "When you said you were going to hire a nanny, I thought she'd be cute, sweet (starts singing a little bit of "Supercalifragilistic"). Instead you send me the Beast of Bayonne."

At 10, I watched tonight's episode of SUPERNATURAL. It was a very clever and pretty scary riff on Grimm's fairy tales.

Least favorite moment. When Sam is reminding Dean of the story of Cinderella, and Dean replies, "Could you be any more gay?" Cheap shot. Very cheap.

But I just have to wonder how having so many new shows up during sweeps will affect the advertising rates that the networks normally ask for and get - and determine - for the rest of the season, and the fall.
