Well, you've read the notes, the notes had waxy buildup, and now it is time for you to post until the nostalgic cows come home.

•   Jan. 8: Owner Liv og Signe Verhaug hugs 18-month-old Pyrenees dog Leon, who was rescued from the mountain ledge in Oldedalen, western Norway, where he had been stuck since New Year’s Eve when he was frightened by New Year-rockets. A rescuer from Norsk Luftambulanse (Norwegian Air Ambulance) was lowered to the ledge by helicopter and soon after they were both lifted off the ledge.

Vienna's renowned Spanish Riding School, famed for its white Lipizzaner stallions and their elegant strutting and sprightly dancing, lost an estimated $2.9 million last year, officials said. Officials on Friday warned the Spanish Riding School is on the verge of bankruptcy.

Today at noon, I' going to the opera!  I'll be seeing Verdi's Macbeth at the movies.  It's an encore showing of the Live from the Metropolitan Opera high definition broadcast that's showing at a local movie theater!  I remember reading about these broadcasts last season, but the closest theater to Olympia where they were being shown was more than an hour away, and now they have it here!  It had better be good...the ticket was $22!  But that's a heck of a lot cheaper than flying to New York and seeing it in person. ;)

Saw a TV movie last night called "12:01," or most of it anyway - we started watching  a little late.  It's about a fellow who lives through a day of his life, and then the alarm rings, and the day starts again and he can try to make things right.

Sounds like Groundhog Day, doesn't it?  But the story the film is based on was written long before Groundhog Day, so could it be that the startlingly original premise of Groundhog Day is actually in the public domain, that anyone is free to do a story about someone living a day over and over until they get the day right, as long as they don't use the particulars of the Groundhog Day (or "12:01") characters and plot, just the overall premise?

Maybe that's a question for "free for all" day, if anyone has any thoughts on it:  Is there ever a point where an idea becomes so unique that no one should ever copy it, or are all basic ideas subject to being used by someone else if they can put their own spin on it?

I doubt there are many unique simple-sentence "ideas"; treatments, however, should be provided some protection.

I enjoyed the show.  But like DR MattH, I found the story to be predictable. I mean i knew exactly where it was headed (except fot the last scene).

I think it would have been better if i had NOT known that it was the girl who wrote the messages.

I don't know how obvious that was to most people. Maybe most people don't think about where a story is going and just watch.

But it bothers me when writers write predictably.  That might sound stupid. But it just seemed to me like none of the characters were seeing the obvious. ANd it was supposed to be shocking when lucy opened the door. BUt it totally wasn't!

I still love this show.

Oops i almost forgot my biggest complaint/comment re: the show.

Last week Ned was a kid (10ish) and now he's doubled his age (17?).

Why did they do that??

Maybe it will make better storylines if ned can be melinda's helper. But it was jarring for them to do that without even doing a soap type (the role of ned is now being played by".

As for yesterday's TOD:

OUTER LIMITS
THE MONKEES
ALFRED HITCHCOCK
NIGHT GALLERY
TWILIGHT ZONE
And my #1 show was THE PRISONER. I was prety obsessed with this show and one of my goals in life was to go to the village.

At the end of the last episode, the location was finally mentioned in the credits and I scribbled it down. It was one of those long Welsh names so I was never sure I got it right, but occasionally I made attempts to find it. One day in a bookstore, I looked through a Michelin guide and finally found it!

When I graduated college, I had a job working on a film in England. After we were done, some friends came to visit and we took a minibus to Wales and visited The Village. It was beyond anything I had every imagined.

Years later, I went there with my DH, and of course, that was even more fun!

Good morning, all! A night of weird dreams - including one involving my great-Aunt Lucy, several cartons of vodka her family owed my father (who never drank vodka), a gigantic snowstorm and another about Jonathan Tunick and me preparing for an orchestra rehearsal of PROMISES, PROMISES in the living room of my parents' housein Ohio - and being awakened by my upstairs neighbor and his dog pacing aimlessly/frantically about his his apartment around 3 am this morning have left me a bit groggy and muddled today.

I need to stop off at Toyland to look up the musical theatre credentials of Lawrence McCarty, but I believe I can put that off until tomorrow morning.

DR MBarnum, I do wish you'd take your head out of the ozone and tune in for a moment or two on the current movies happening on this continent or in this decade: it sounds as if the film you loved so much last night AAP KI KHATIR (2006) is a copyright violation of THE WEDDING DATE of 2005, which is probably a copyright violation of another film and which I saw with goddaughter Charlotte three years ago.

Communicating with Barnum gives me headache.  The only viable solution is to watch the clear-headed events of a Jane Austen novel. I hope this new version of PERSUASION tonight won't be too horrifying an adaptation of one of my favorite novels.

Interesting that there are several recent movies about an actor being hired by a woman to play her beau for the benefit of the woman's family.  The play BEAU JEST, which ran for years off-Broadway and the film of which is slated for release this year, has the following plot:

"When Sarah Goldman, a lovely young school teacher in Chicago, wants to please her parents, she invents a boyfriend whom she believes will be the man of her mother's dreams. When her parents insist on meeting the man, Sarah hires Bob, an actor, to pretend to be her "beau". The masquerade works flawlessly for a time and brings comic situations, but in the end, their lives are irrevocably changed."

THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES premieres tonight at 8, and I'll be sampling this first episode to see if it's a show I want to invest time in. (It's the first of a two parter that concludes tomorrow night.)

A new BROTHERS & SISTERS comes on tonight at 10 p.m.

With the remaining time this afternoon, I'd like to watch THE LODGER. If I remember, it's reasonably short and I should be able to fit it into the time remaining. However, if I find that it's longer than I remembered, I'll rewatch some TV episodes from some box set already watched.

Thanks, FJL!

Boy, being a preditor seems to have taken over my life. Since i'm working with a network in LA, I'm working 10-7 to be more on their time zone. It's nice to be able to go in later, but somehow it always ends up being 9 or so before I leave because I have to talk to people after their done with their shoots, etc. Then my DH and I have dinner, and then it's after 11PM. This has been going on even on the weekends so that's why I've been E&T.

I'm working on the launch of several shows for TLC. One looks very interesting: The Secret Life of a Soccer Mom.

They take a woman who has given up her career to raise her family and ddrop her back into the working world at the point where she would have been had she not taken a break. They don't tell the family, though. They know mom is doing a reality tv thing but they think that she's off at a spa during the week, taking a break while a staff of people help take care of her household duties.

After a week of being in the workforce, (with a break every day to see highlights/lowlights of what happened with her family during the day on a video feed) she is then askes whether she might want to continue ot be a stay at home mom or go back to work.

I don't know how any of the episodes end, since they are still being edited, but I thought it was an interesting premise. I generally despise reality television but since it's paying the bills right now I'm starting to "appreciate" it more!

I'm also working on stuff for TRADING SPACES. The big news there is that Paige Davis is coming back as the host, and there will be more "stories" to the shows. One show features a divorced couple, another one, rival cheerleasders whose mothers are best friends, and there's also a mother and daughter who redo a room in each other's houses (spending limit is under 1,000.)

Good grief - I'm getting "Was Barak Obama a Muslim" EMails!

This campaign is really going to get sickening.

der Brucer

Their conclusion:

Quote
“All this matters, for if Obama once was a Muslim, he is now what Islamic law calls a murtadd (apostate), an ex-Muslim converted to another religion who must be executed. Were he elected president of the Untied States, this status, clearly, would have large potential implications for his relationship with the Muslim world.”

Well, I do expect it to be a non-event, but I'll be watching the Golden Globes press conference tonight (9 p.m.) because I am curious to see who was awarded the prizes.

So, my evening of TV viewing is now set from 8-10.

Since it is a "press conference" and thus a news event, I assume one of the other channels or networks will show the results at 6:00 p.m. on the Left Coast.

I'm up, I'm up... And I've actually been up for a while already.  I got up around 9:00, then since I was in the mood for a croissant, I hopped on the A Train - after dressing accordingly, of course - and headed on down to Columbus Circle.  Then after a brief walk over to 7th Avenue, I stopped into Petrossian (http://www.petrossian.com/Bakery-10.html) for a Croissant.  And an Apricot-Pistachio Danish.  :)  Then it was back over to the Time-Warner Center for a brief stop into Border's to pick up a couple of magazines, then downstairs to Whole Foods to pick up some muffins for the roomies.  Then back on the A train back uptown...

It's been a good Sunday so far.  :)

STANDING at the beginning of the buffet line at Jackson Diner in Queens, Krishnendu Ray took a plate from the heated stack of dishes, plopped on spoonfuls of several offerings and headed to table No. 22. There, a waiter tucked the bill into a wire stand and set down a pink plastic jug of water.

As Indian pop music played in the background and images of an India-Pakistan cricket match flickered on a television screen, Mr. Ray dug in.

“Tandoori chicken always tends to be too dry,” he said, chewing a reddish strip of meat from a chicken leg. But the goat bones in the spicy stew known as makhani earned his approval. “Bones,” he declared, “give a completely different taste to the meat.”

Mr. Ray, who emigrated from the Bengal state of Orissa in 1989 and lives in Peter Cooper Village, is not a restaurant critic. He is a professor of food studies at New York University and the author of “The Migrant’s Table: Meals and Memories in Bengali-American Households,” and one of his professorial missions is to analyze the city’s Indian restaurants from a sociological perspective.

I am working on a campaign where a Republican women is challenging an incumbent Republican man for a non-partisan seat on a school board. The local Republican apparatus first tried to get her not to run: promised her money/endorsements if she shifted to a "lesser" race. Well, she decide to run anyway - now they are going after her Campaign Consultant:

Quote
I am surprised at your lack of knowledge and support for the district central committee's mission to help Republicans win local elections. We cannot simply sit back, like some past committees did, and watch Republican candidates split votes, enabling a Democrat to get elected. If neither candiate gets elected, then no Republican issues get prioritized & the Democratic agenda is allowed to continue growing in our school systems.

So much for "It's about the children!"

I had read that somewhere about her coming back to the host the show.

In my "spare" time, I'm editing a video for child safety for a group called "Safe Kids". I agreed to do it pro bono because the guy doing it is a good friend and client, and he also had a good job for me. But the TLC stuff has taken up so much time that I had to turn down his paying job, but felt like it would be wrong to back out of the other, since I had already agreed to help before he came up with the nice job. (But that was when I  was out of work!)

Oh, start with little steps - cup of tea, grilled cheese - then march on!

When I met Woody, he could hardly boil water and considered Denny's fine dining. It was only after he "learned" to eat that he took up cooking.

Actually, I suspect THE CLOSER has a better ultimate survival chance than some shows; it may lose its creative team for a bit, but the show does not rely on plot continuity, and the audience will surely hunger for more - even after a long hiatus.

How many women are running for this position?

Two women (one R one D) and one man (D) challenging a male incumbent (R).

Only our candidate has a life long record as an educator - she recently retired from the district where she headed up programs for disadvantaged and special needs kids.

The other challengers are a Lawyer and a Congressional Aide.

I am working on a campaign where a Republican women is challenging an incumbent Republican man for a non-partisan seat on a school board. The local Republican apparatus first tried to get her not to run: promised her money/endorsements if she shifted to a "lesser" race. Well, she decide to run anyway - now they are going after her Campaign Consultant: So much for "It's about the children!"

Next I finished the two remaining bonus features on the MISS JULIE DVD.

The first was a 1966 TV interview with the director Alf Sjöberg. He talked a lot about his early career and making movies in the 1940s war years, but nothing about MISS JULIE. I guess they were hard up for bonuses to include this with this film. Better to use it if they ever bring one of his 40s films to DVD.

Secondly was an almost hourlong documentary on the 2005 stage production of MISS JULIE in Stockholm and some reminiscences by the two surviving actresses who played in the 1951 film and the 1969 made-for-TV movie. I enjoyed this, but it was much more focused on the stage production and had only a small amount to do with the film.

:o  Non-partisan has always been the key word for school board elections.  I hope this is a rarity, not today's norm.

In CA, it is indeed the norm. Term Limits on legislative offices (state and city) have created a merry-go-round of political office holders. The school boards are now considered "entry level" positions for those desiring to seek higher office - they are temporary stepping stones; serving is just getting your ticket punched. If you run for School Board you will be carefully vetted by the respective political parties to be sure your "core values" are in keeping with party goals. When, in the past, I complained that a candidate's views on abortion or trade with China were not germane to running the schools, I was loundly lambasted for being disloyal to party objectives! (Note: at the time I WAS the chairman of the Local Republican Assemby Central Committee and Woody was Chairman of the local Republican Congressional Central Committee and we were both members of the County Central Committee, and I was a member of the State Central Committee.) I'm not sure the party has ever recovered from the site of an openly gay male couple running the show!

DR Jose, the Petrossian building is at the top of my list of favorite NY buildings, perhaps because I've seen it so often due to its close proximity to The Wellington. I always look at the menu when I walk past, and think to myself that one day I will have dinner there, but there never seemed to be an occasion special enough (i.e. we don't have the wardrobe for it!). Who knew you could go in and get a croissant?

How dressed up do you have to get to do that?

You don't have to be dressed up at all to get a croissant at Petrossian.  There's a small cafe on the 7th Avenue side of the building.  It has a display case filled with baked goods on one side, and the other side is their selection of caviars and other savories for "to go" service.  Most people just pop in, buy their baked goodies and leave - like I usually do.  And it's very casual.  There are some tables set up there if you'd like to enjoy your croissants and/or chocolate-ginger cookies and/or madeleines and/or tartes in-house.  *And the coffee they serve you if you request table service is a lot(!!!) better than the stuff in the self-serve pump-carafes.   A lot (as I was reminded of this morning).  Best of all, the croissants are only $2.00, with the Almond and Chocolate ones running $2.50, $2.75.  Practically a steal.  *They're also Martha Stewart's favorite croissants in the City.  (Although, sometimes she says the same things about the ones down at Balthazar and Pastis.)

The restaurant proper has an entrance on the corner of the building.  Lunch there is a real good deal too.  And, again, it's very casual.  Don't be put off by the luxe surroundings or the brand name.  They also have a good prix fixe dinner special - no jacket required, but "casual appropriate" (as some restaurants are calling it lately) is just fine.

The feedback from England on some of the new adaptations (MANSFIELD PARK in particular) hasn't been too good, but I'm reserving judgment, although it will be hard to beat the BBC PERSUASION from the 1990s and Ema Thompson's wonderful SENSE & SENSIBILITY.  The old BBC MANSFIELD PARK was okay, not terrific, but Anna Massey was wonderful as the evil Aunt Norris. I thought the 1999 film made some odd choices and cut out too much of the evil Mrs Norris' horrible abuse.

MANSFIELD PARK is the one adaptation not by Andrew Davies who's responsible for the other five novels, and I love his EMMA and PRIDE & PREJUDICE, so it will be nice to see them again.

I liked the Bollywood version of Debra Messing's movie better than Debra's. . .then again, Ms. Messing was one of the countless reasons I didn't watch WILL & GRACE.

I still hold that MBarnum could see and enjoy SWEENEY TODD; the blood is presented in such an homage to Hammer Horror and Herschell Gordon Lewis as well.  The most horror-inducing moment, to me, comes at the end. . .but anyone who has ever seen Christopher Lee's demise(s) in any of the Hammer films wouldn't be as horrified.

You don't have to be dressed up at all to get a croissant at Petrossian.

Had I known, I might have made my hotel reservaitons at the (cheaper) Wellington than at the Edison.

Actually, maybe it's a good thing I won't be near Petrossian!

All the talk between SWW and Jose about roasting bones for soup stock was also very fascinating to me, but also made me feel like I am such a rookie in the kitchen that I shouldn't even bother...
We are all rookies at one point or another.

Take it a step at a time.  Making stock isn't that difficult, but time consuming.

And there are so many other things to learn how to roast.  Chicken, for example.

I really should get a chicken out of the freezer now, if I'm going to roast it tomorrow.

And I should get dinner on the table.

It shouldn't take long.  Yesterday, I made a very nice pot roast.  Problem was, der Brucer was totally zonked out, with every dog zonking with him on his bed.  So I simply told him that it was scrounge night, and that we'd have the pot roast tonight instead.

They say that pot roast is better the second day.  Tonight will tell.

(Note: at the time I WAS the chairman of the Local Republican Assemby Central Committee and Woody was Chairman of the local Republican Congressional Central Committee and we were both members of the County Central Committee, and I was a member of the State Central Committee.) I'm not sure the party has ever recovered from the site of an openly gay male couple running the show!

der Brucer

It just doesn't make sense, I believe you-it is simply idiotic.  I have personally known two people who ran, and won, seats on the school board.-one in Michigan & one in California.  Both were motivated by the needs of their child to get involved.  Neither had had higher aspirations.

one-two-kick! one-two-kick!

Or is that a polonaise?  We had the same debate about the strange little dance piece in the ms of BABES IN TOYLAND.

Some mazurkas have an accent on the second beat (of three).  Some mazurkas have an accent on the third beat (of three).  However, depending on the tempo, they can either be categorized as a mazur, oberek, or a kujawiak.

If you'd like more info - and/or would like to be further confused - you can consult the following sources:

Hi, y'all.  I'm posting from my sister's "beach cottage" (all 4000 sq of it, LOL) in lovely Emerald Isle, NC.  We had a very nice visit in Greensboro the past two days with various members of Betsy's family, whose cousin's son had his Bar Mitzvah.  Who knew there were so many Jews in NC, let alone Greensboro?  I certainly didn't.

BK, glad to see your comment about Jarre in the notes since I made a similar one a few weeks ago and was afraid it would be considered sacrilege.

May I just say that I have seen more BIG screen tv's at our various relatives than I have ever seen in my life.  We started at my sister's Raleigh townhouse with what I think were about 40 or 50 inchers.  Then we went to Betsy's cousin's mini-palace in Greensboro and his rec room had a plasma unit that took up a whole wall--I'd say minimum 6 feet wide.  Then in coming to my sister's beach home we walked into their "media room" with a full movie-screen sized wall projection unit.  I'm having size envy with memories of our paltry 37" unit waiting at home.   ;D

But that's a heck of a lot cheaper than flying to New York and seeing it in person. ;)

I saw this at the Met last weekend and really enjoyed it. Hope you enjoyed it.

That sounds really interesting, I can't wait to see how the families will be impacted.

Well, I know his manager, so I'll see if "Birkeland" is in his repertoire.

In the meantime, maybe you can find your answer HERE (http://www.andsnes.com/).

That was one of the most poorly written biographies I have ever red (for derBrucer and Jose).  However, I am now considering taking classes next summer at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo.

This has been a tired-butt weekend.  It followed a kick-ass week that saw me dragging my tired butt home Friday e'en and I have been recuperating ever since.

While being a tired-butt, I have been clearing my DVR cache of various/sundried "Maisie" films recorded over Thanksgiving!!!

I hope tomorrow will see me reinvigorated, or it will be one tired-butt week, for sure!

Sunday evening greetings from Nashotah House in Delafield, Wisconsin!  DH Richard and I had a 9-hour drive up here - the only bad weather we encountered was that rain/snow mix around Indianapolis that DR JRand mentioned.  We got to the Milwaukee about 10 minutes before Richard's classmate from Florida landed, waited in the cell phone parking area, picked him up and got here in time for the seminarians to attend mass.

For dinner we went to a local brew pub, where the Green Bay fans were watching the New York/Dallas game and were thrilled that New York won.  That means that the playoff game will be in Green Bay.

It is beautiful here, some snow on the ground but the roads are clear.

Thanks!  I did. :) There were only about 16 people in the theater, and one was a fellow usher, so there was one person that I knew.  Otherwise, it was very good.  Not only were they great singers, but good actors, as well.  That's always nice.  I don't know if I'll go see every showing, but there are at least a couple that I want to see.

I began my evening watching THE GAME PLAN on Blu-ray disc. Stunning transfer, innocuous trifle of a movie, and I despise that they made the eight year old girl so calculating. The child actress was supremely untalented, I thought.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson does definitely have charisma on screen, and he wasn't embarrassed to do some very silly stuff during the movie. (Of course, didn't he play gay in BE COOL a few years ago, too? Seems like he's up for anything to have a movie career. Good for him.)

There are more special features on the disc than I expected there to be. I'll be working on them all afternoon and up till 9 p.m. tomorrow night, I expect.

Next I watched the NBC version of the Golden Globes. Quite a few surprise wins there in both the movie and TV categories, but I was happy for MAD MEN, Jon Hamm, Glenn Close in the Tv categories. Was surprised by the support for CALIFORNICATION, but the Globes awarded NIP/TUCK and Julian McMahon years ago, too, when the show couldn't get arrested at the Emmys.

Emblematic of the importance of the awards: on the NBC show, the best song and best screenplay winners weren't even mentioned on the broadcast.

I didn't know the accordion could make such sweet music.

Rodger also played accordion on our INTERNATIONALE and SACCO AND VAZNETTI films, and was the only male member (that sounds unseemly!) of Cowboy Envy, one of our favorite local groups. Picture The Andrews Sisters crossed with the Sons of the Pioneers.

He had a bumper sticker on his accordion case (for his swanky red Italian one):
"Play an accordion, go to jail." (I think it's a take-off on an old anti-drug ad.)

Another new show for TLC: Paul McKenna's I CAN MAKE YOU THIN. I had asked to work on that one, hoping it would somehow rub off and I would lose weight by osmosis, but they have passed it along to a graphics house. And I had already written my promo line: "Do you have the guts---to lose?"

The show is 4 episodes long and Paul guarantees that people will lose weight without dieting, if they follow his 4 simple rules. The show got very high ratings in Britain so they hope to duplicate its success here.

I think MattH is exactly right - I do think the strike will be over by the Oscarcast, but IF it isn't, I do think they'll attempt to postpone.  You must understand, the DGA has entered into its negotiations with the producers, and they are intent on coming to terms as quickly as possible.  They would have done this months ago, but didn't out of respect for the writers.  That's over now - they are tired of this.  The Writer's Guild has done this before and they'll do it again - nothing wrong with it except that when they do settle, it will be for what they could have had a month ago - same as with the stagehands union.  I'm not bashing anyone or pointing fingers, but it's always the way.  The DGA has, I think, in its entire history, struck once (and actually I can't swear to that) and it was for a very short period of time.  I served on the strike committee once for a strike that didn't happen - but everyone in the DGA worked so hard for the strike not to happen and it didn't.  There was no posturing, no bravado, no strutting - just an organization that wanted to get the best it could while keeping their members employed.  IF the DGA comes to terms with the producers very quickly (our last e-mail from them stated they're within spitting distance of doing so on almost every issue), then it's over for the writers and they will settle soon thereafter.

Jose - no the DGA is not on strike - that was my point.  Unlike the WGA, they don't wait until the last possible minute to negotiate, they don't posture, they just do what they need to do and it normally results in a contract agreement rather than a strike.  My point was/is if the DGA settles with the producers, that means that a formula for new media will be worked out that's acceptable, and once that happens, the writers will follow suit.   It's happened before, it will happen again.  The writers would rather the DGA did not do this, and, as I said, the DGA, out of respect, held off on doing it for a few months, to see if the writers would settle.  They WANTED to begin their talks last September.

I was once in Joe Allen, sitting at the bar having a steak.  The guy next to me chatted me up - he said that he was going in the studio the next day and he was at a loss as to how to approach the album he was doing.  He introduced himself - Mike Berniker, whose name I recognized instantly from the Cy Coleman cast albums.  He was about to record the two piano version of The Most Happy Fella.  I introduced myself back, and he knew my work.  He asked if I had any ideas (this was long before I Do! I Do!).  I told him I'd recorded a two piano version of The Anastasia Affaire and that I hadn't gotten it right - I simply didn't know enough and couldn't articulate what I felt was wrong.  I said if I ever did another that the two pianos have to become a character in the recording.

A week later I was talking to Billy Rosenfield who then ran the cast album division of RCA, who'd recorded The Most Happy Fella.  I asked him how it had gone, and told him I'd met Mike the night before the session.  Before I could recount any of that conversation, Billy said, "Mike really did a good job - he came in and said 'I want the two pianos to be a CHARACTER' - isn't that great?"

I told him it WAS great, and then I let him in on the conversation and we had the best laugh about it.

Is there any official word on the SAG Awards yet?

Is anyone you know up for "sagging" honors?

I just happened to come across "12:01," also.  I did a little reading (just a little) and found that "12:01" was based on a short story "12:01 PM" by Richard Lupoff.  According to the IMDb.com board (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106188/board/nest/57141999), it was an expansion of a short film on Showtime called "12:01 PM (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098962/)" starring Kurtwood Smith from "That 70s Show."  The short film and the short story had one hour repeat over and over and didn't have happy endings.  The long version, like "Groundhog Day," repeated 24 hours and had a happy ending...meaning the guy got the girl and the day ended.  Also, according to the trivia section of "Groundhog Day":

The idea comes from 'Gay Science', a famous book by Friedrich Nietzsche. In his book, Nietsche gives a description of a man who is living the same day over and over again.
