Well, you've read the notes, the notes were sugary and were rushed, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're rushing to have some sugar.

Welcome five GUESTS.

Who ARE you people?

According to THIS (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/114378.html) article on Playbill.com about theatre in London in 2008:
Director John Doyle — recently a Broadway name for his innovative revivals of Sweeney Todd and Company — will return to the work of Stephen Sondheim. His spin on the backwards-running tale of disillusionment, Merrily We Roll Along[/b], began previews Jan. 16 at the Watermill.

DR RLP - I wanted the music from LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN, so I went to Amazon.com and bought a new CD that was offered by Amazon.com. It wasn't a seller or Ebay, so I didn't really know it's origin except that it was an import and IN STOCK, so I bought it.

Scott Lowell suffered through such terrible writing in QAF, it is nice to hear that he is working in other - different - stuff.
-
TOD; fave Welles films are AMBERSONS, TOUCH OF EVIL, and CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT: never cared for KANE, but I esp like Welle's cameo as Cardinal Wolsey in MAN FOR ALL SEASONS...Olivier-my favorite by far is RICHARD III, and I also love his performance in SPARTACUS....Don't have a favorite Leigh performance, tho I did see her TOVARICH charleston on Ed Sullivan and she supported Gielgud in the play and RCA recording of IVANOV-It's the record I have and like.a lot

Ask BK day three days late
and excuse me if it has been asked.
Any chance First Nudie Musical and The Creature Wasn't Nice will see a HD transfer? (Blu Ray or HD)?

I must of missed it. What other---different--stuff?
LOL....I was just counting the play MR BK wrote about. IMDB does mention a 2007 film and a 2008 film TO LIVE AND DIE IN DIXIE in post production. :D

Good morning!
We're supposed to have more snow today, but it just doesn't feel like snow to me. The sky is overcast, but if it's something other than rain, I'll be surprised.

For those in L.A. in February, Universal will be screening "Badlands of Dakota" with Robert Stack, Ann Rutherford, Richard Dix and.....Frances Farmer (as Calamity Jane!). One of the Universal lawyers invited me to come as a special guest, but I don't think I can get down there at that time.

Even though I got 7 hours of sleep, I had time this morning to watch about 50 more minutes of THUNDERBALL. Still have about 30 minutes to go. Paluzzi hasn't gotten her just desserts yet.
A lot of this movie seems to have been looped.
BTW, has there ever been any explanation why the Bond producers kept changing actors for Felix Leighter in every film? You'd think they'd stay with the same one as long as they had the same Miss Moneypenny for so many years or the same "Q" until he died. At least keep the same Felix as long as the same man was playing Bond.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And, thankfully, my friend I'm having brunch with today slept in too, so... Then after brunch, I think I'm going to see a show, maybe, possibly... Then a dinner with another groups of friends... Then the NY Philharmonic... So...
Be good. Have fun. And stay well.

Today, I'll be completing as best I can the rest of the bonus features (two more items) on the second disc in the THIS SPORTING LIFE set. Then, later tonight, I'll be starting on the first of the Agnes Varda films, all of which will be new to me.

Heading downstairs now to pick up with the SPORTING LIFE bonus features and then start fixing lunch.

JR, do you know about the new 50th anniversary Perry Mason boxed set coming out? The fun stuff is in the extras, with Burr's screentest as Hamilton Burger, etc.

Good morning, all! Not having a computer at home is cramping my style, but it does give me no excuse to procrastinate at Bug Central. Today I threw out the bag I carry around and microwaved everything in it. I also discovered that if the book is too large and cannot rotate, it will catch fire. I have to buy a new 2008 datebook.
I also feel as though a dent has finally been made in the situation. I bought a lovely new Hoover vacuum last night and made a lot of noise with it. The books are in three piles: save, ship, and toss. I believe I will have by Tuesday around 20-25 cartons of books, music, programs, etc. to ship to Miami UniversityI was asleep by 9 pm and up around 5 am.
If any New York DRs are free on Monday afternoon and want to come help me, it would be greatly appreciated. They're welcome to take with them nearly anything they'd like. I only know that by 8 am Tusday morning, I've got to have the last load of laundry into the washers, the entire space vacuumed and cleaned, and anything that isn't in plastic out of the apartment. This morning at 6 am, I put all cannisters of food and the spices into the refrigerator.
God, this totally sucks!
-
DR elmore3003 - Yes, it totally does! I'm so sorry.
And if my *&%$# employer didn't make us all work on Monday, I'd have gladly come in to help you out. :(

From TCB:
I can't believe that not one of you had a comment on me naming George W. Bush the greatest President of all time!
Either that, or it's proof that no one reads my posts.
I did, and should have sent you a chuckle. :)
-
DR TCB - I read your posts, too...
And you sent me off to check the news reports, as I had not heard about this potential windfall...

It does & I'm exhausted just reading your post. I will admit to a little chuckle over the date book. I hope you didn't loose anything important in it since it is so early in the year.

Thank you DR;s Singdaw & Arnold M Brockman
TPunk, feel better. I’m doing my best not to catch Keith’s cold.

I hope DR Ginny & DH Richard are having a pleasant & safe drive home!

Adam Sandler & Don Cheadle were terrific in REIGN OVER ME! Mike Binder did an excellent job of writing, directing, and acting in the film. Three very talented men, IMHO.

Quote from Jeanne yesterday:
Are you feeling better, TCB?
(Maybe he missed my post.)
My apologies, Jeanne, I did miss your post, not once but twice. After starting the week feeling really good, I had kind of a pnenomatic setback Wednesday thru Friday. The wheezing and coughing started coming back on Wednesday, and after resting all day Thursday, I thought I was okay. Unfortunately, Friday was a long and labored day at work. This weekend (all three days) is going to be mostly rest, rest, rest.
And that concludes more than you ever wanted to read about my health.
-
Ask BK day three days late
and excuse me if it has been asked.
Any chance First Nudie Musical and The Creature Wasn't Nice will see a HD transfer? (Blu Ray or HD)?
I'm going to set up a meeting with Image about it, but we'd have to do a new transfer. Since the last transfer, the CRI has been found (it's the interneg from which prints are made) and while I'm sure it's faded, it's a better source and the color can be corrected digitally. However, it is in the possession of Mr. Haggard who I've been trying to get on the phone for the last two years to no avail. Either he's completely become a hermit or he's died, but I have no way of knowing which. I may drop him a line. But, I also have a new print which is in much better shape than the last print we used, so we'll see how it goes.
-
Re Li'l Abner, I find it hard to support going to see it as it was my idea and when the original director (my pal David Lee) dropped out I found it appalling that I was not approached.

I'm signing off for the day. I've got too much to accomplish at the apartment. I'll be back tomorrow.
the most frustrating situation is that I can receive my email, which is on Time Warner, but since the office uses Verizon, I can receive my email but only respond by using Time Warner's webmail. Oy!
At any rate, pray for Rosemary's Baby!
-
I guess I needed to sleep in because I'd only gotten about five hours the previous two night, but now I've got to get de-groggified because I have a meeting at 3:30 and I'll be heading off to Santa Monica directly after that.

thank you, TCB. I know that cycle: rest, feel better, resume normal activities, relapse. I do hope that this weekend's rest results in significant improvement.

One of the advantages of Gmail, Larry, is that it's not tied to your ISP and thus can be picked up from anywhere. In the past, I believed my ISP when they said I could pick up my email from a friend's computer using webmail. It was a fiasco. But Gmail is really great for that. It's free, too.

I watched the remaining items on THIS SPORTING LIFE this afternoon.
I started off with a 1952 documentary he made called WAKEFIELD EXPRESS, a half hour look at how a small city in northern England puts out its weekly newspaper. How ironic that he'd find himself there for THIS SPORTING LIFE some ten years later. The contacts and goodwill he established in 1952 held him in goos sted when he went back there to film the movie.
-
The other item in the set was Anderson's last film - a 1993 autobiographical documentary called IS THAT ALL THERE IS? Sort of a "two-days-in-the-life-of" kind of thing, it showed his friends and relatives, his neighborhood acquaintances, etc.
I found it interesting that he did not have on display either his Oscar or his Palme D'Or in his apartment. He did have posters from his films and stage productions decorating the walls.
-
I spent my remaining time continuing watching THUNDERBALL. I'm within 10 or 15 minutes of finishing it. Then, I'll begin the Agnes Varda films. I believe the first film in the set is her first film LA POINTE COURTE.
-
Orson Welles: CITIZEN KANE, THE STRANGER, TOUCH OF EVIL, COMPULSION
Vivien Leigh: GONE WITH THE WIND
Laurence Olivier: WUTHERING HEIGHTS, HAMLET, THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLE, SPARTACUS
-
I'm heading down now to finish THUNDERBALL and then begin something new and totally different for me. Depending on how long it is, I may get to last night's MONK episode tonight, or it may have to wait until tomorrow while I'm cooking and eating lunch. We'll see.

TCB - Nothing's finalized as to the dates of the Last Starfighter presentations, but assuming all goes according to plan, it's a two-week intensive process starting April 22, which culminates in a few presentations which I think are open to the ticket-buying public. I don't think they'll be announcing it on their site until a few weeks before the actual presentations.

Good evening!
I had to work today but it was cut short when a snowstorm rolled in. I am now spending the rest of the weekend working on a pro bono piece about child safety. I had volunteered to do this when I didn't have any work. Now I've had to turn down 3 days of work at overtime pay to work on this. Oh well...I am very tired from my experience as a preditor, so although I could use the cash, it's kind of a relief to turn down the work.
The good part of the TLC job was that 2 of the 3 pieces were ones I originated and TLC liked them so much that they are clearing the songs I used and putting them on air, even though they are 2 minutes long. I am very happy to have been responsible for some worthy indie musicians to get a nice surprise paycheck! And we got a nice email from the network head about seeing them on the air and how much she loved them.

TOD:
Vivian Leigh: SHIP OF FOOLS
GWTW
Olivier: A LITTLE ROMANCE
SLEUTH
CLASH OF THE TITANS
Wells: CITIZEN KANE
THE STRANGER
Austin Pendleton: SIMON
SKIDDOO (any movie where Harry Nilsson sings the credits can't
be all bad!)

TOD: GWTW (of course) and "Ship of Fools," " Streetcar for Miss Leigh
I'm trying to scan photos, and my computer keeps crashing-- very frustrating indeed.
I've also sent many deep e-mails to friends and have gotten no responses-- I hate that.
For Mr. Olivier: I adore "A Little Romance."
For Mr. Welles, his genius cannot be denied in "Citizen Kane." Yes there are others of his that are brilliant, but this was the real thing.

It was wonderful having snow today, but it has all melted.

Stay well Edi.

Awaiting me in my email was a small conference planning fire that I've just put out (or at least subdued for the moment).
I'm going to bed - in our queen-size TempurPedic, which is very appealing after a week of sleeping in a broken-down standard double.
'night!

Re: Alfred Uhry's PARADE
The story took place in my former town of Marietta, GA, and Mary Phagan was buried in the cemetary across from our house.
For anyone interested in the case, a guy I went to J-school with wrote the definitive book on the subject: Steve Oney's "And The Dead Shall Rise".

I had to work today but it was cut short when a snowstorm rolled in.
Wow - details; impress DakotaCelt with your blizzard ;D

Oh well, good excuse for a Hot Buttered Rum!

Our little theatre is doing The Children's Hour, so I think I'll head over that way here shortly to get my ticket...
I have seen that play before MissKaren. NDSU put it in 2006. I rather enjoyed it.

Agreed. It's not perfect. But it's great for traveling.

Welcome home to DR GINNY and DH RICHARD.
-
I can't believe I omitted THE THIRD MAN from my Orson Welles list. Argh!
-
I've been a busy bee tonight regarding movies. I began by finishing THUNDERBALL. In its day it was the highest grossing Bond film (and adjusted for inflation, it probably still is), but it certainly isn't my favorite.
-
We had a few flakes of snow mixed in with the constant rain we've had today, but not nearly enough to stick around.
-
Then, I watched the first film in the Agnes Varda box set - LA POINTE COURTE. More of a slice of life wander through this French fishing village on the Mediterranean than a true narrative film, I was underwhelmed by the technique, but you can certainly tell the director was a still photographer because frame compositions are stunning throughout, and she loves to let the camera linger on faces. The film was shot silent with sound dubbed in later which always has a hollow ring to it. She also directed the couple considering separation to show NO emotion on their faces or in their dubbed voices, so you can imagine how that plays.
Still, the beauty of the images and the interesting back and forth shots between the couple and the rest of the village made it marginally entertaining.
-
Good night.
-
There are two interviews with Agnes Varda on this first disc. One done in 2004 and one done in 1964 as she looked back ten years on her first film. Both contain interesting information about her philosophy of filmmaking and the techniques she used for her film (cost 10 million francs, a pittance compared to studio films of the day.)
-
Then since the first film only ran 80 minutes, I decided to go ahead and watch the second film in the set: CLEO FROM 5 to 7. Brilliant! An absolutely stunning real-time walk around Paris as a rising pop singer waits to get word on some stomach cancer tests from her doctor. Hypnotic in every respect and with the ravishingly beautiful Corinne Marchand as the central figure, this is one movie I'll look forward to seeing again.
Michele Legrand plays her composer friend who comes to her apartment to play some new tunes for her, and she sings "Without You" exquisitely with such rich emotion.
-
I started watching the huge number of supplements on this disc, but I only got a few of them watched. One is called "Remembrance" which finds Varda going around Paris pointing out locations that are still there and also mentioning the ones that are now gone. Several actors from the film (including the stars) and some production assistants also relive memorable aspects of the filming.
-
So, I should be able to finish the bonuses on this disc tomorrow and then get the third film LE BONHEUR watched. It is also only 80 minutes long but has a long list of supplements on the disc.
-

Cool!
The more I think about INN, the more I like it. I'm looking into buying the book(s) on Miss Gladys, but, am only coming up with ones that are out-of-print; that's when working for a major bookseller comes in handy, though. ;)

Ah! But is he Mooving and Grooving to a new shellac, by Harry James or Freddy Slack?*
*I'm certain that a couple of DRs will get the reference; I the esteemed bk will.

I own it. I've read it twice. Brilliant writing. Completely researched. Compelling reading.
. . .and while we're on the subject. . .
Name two films (one for television) based on the Leo Frank case.

I can't believe I omitted THE THIRD MAN from my Orson Welles list. Argh!
I can't believe I was the first one to mention it!
-
I forgot to mention that I also watched Friday night's episode of MONK. OK mystery, but this week Natalie really bugged the crap out of me. Usually it's Randy who does that (he had his own distractions this week and didn't get deeply involved in the case).
-
I can't believe I was the first one to mention it!
It's an embarrassing omission on my part because THE THIRD MAN ranks among my top two or three all-time favorite movies. Double argh!
-
Now, I have some writing to do and then will be heading down for bed. My eyes are feeling really heavy right now.
Good night!

Good Evening!
W! H! E! W!

Good evening, DR Jose!
-
It was another wonderful day spent with some wonderful friends.
I spent a good portion of today with my friend, Phil. He's an up and coming singer-songwriter based of Sacramento. He was in town for some PR related work - oh, he works as a publicist too. We met up for brunch at Westway Diner, then headed over to the Schoenfeld to catch the matinee of A Chorus Line.
It's been a couple of weeks since I've seen the show, and the new bunch of cast members have really hit their stride. And, yes, I cried in the spots that I usually cry, and I left the theatre feeling fortunate and humbled to be a part of "the Broadway".
-
Good Evening, DR td!
-
td - I'm very scared that I actually get the reference. (And how appropriate for a Saturday night.)

Alas, PAGE SEVEN!!!!
Let's do a Phil Putnam (http://philputnam.com/photos.htm) Dance!!!!
-
After the matinee, I headed on up to Lincoln Center to meet up with my friend, Jeff, for dinner. We were going to go to the New York Philharmonic tonight, but by the time we got to the box office, it turned out there were barely any tickets left, and the ones that were available, were singles in the far reaches of Avery Fisher Hall. So, we passed on the Phil, which turned out to be a good thing, since Jeff got a call from the hospital about a patient (he's a doctor), and Phil called me since his evening plans changed due to a friend's flight getting delayed by a couple of hours. So, Jeff headed to the hospital, and I headed back to Times Square.
-
Hello Jose!
-
I was hoping that Phil and I could sneak in to see Legally Blonde, but...
ATTENTION NEW YORKERS: IT IS A HOLIDAY WEEKEND... STAY AWAY FROM TIMES SQUARE!!!!!
;)
In any case... After checking with the box office manager, the house manager, the company manager and the stage manager at The Palace, we were informed that there was no way they could squeeze us in tonight. They were completely sold out. -In fact, even A Chorus Line was sold out for both shows today. Well... We walked here, we walked there, then we boarded the 1 Train downtown and walked around The Village for a while. And, yes, Cones Gelato was consumed in transit. ;)
Then it was time to head back uptown so that Phil could meet his friend who's flight finally made it into La Guardia. I was going to walk up to his friend's hotel with him, but decided to say our goodbyes and head over to Ninth Avenue to make a stop into Amy's Breads for some treats for tomorrow morning. Well...
-
As I'm walking down 46th Street, I thought I walked by someone I knew from Richmond... And, lo and behold, it was him and his partner! Joel and John had come up for the holiday weekend, and they had just come from seeing The Homecoming with some friends. They were walking around trying to find a piano bar since there was an hour wait to get into Don't Tell Mama. I suggested a few places, but since I was a bit tired after walking around all day, I wanted to head home. However, we made plans to meet tomorrow for dinner. :)
*Alas, Amy's Bread was already closed for the evening.
-
Hmm... WNET/Channel 13 is showing "The Robe" as their late-night movie tonight. Hmm...
-
I'm signing off for the day.
DR elmore - Just set up the POP mail features on gmail to accept your Time-Warner emails.

Hmmm... I know one of them - the TV movie... Since it was filmed in Richmond while I was in school...
OH! And I just remembered the other one now too! :)
-
td - I'm very scared that I actually get the reference. (And how appropriate for a Saturday night.)
Are you scared of The Sisters or The Brothers? Or of John Travolta?
-
We have a couple of very smart DRs up and posting!
-
Wow! I have been listening almost all evening to The New York Shakespeare Co.'s THREE PENNY OPERA. It's a killer recording.
-
Is it embarrassing to admit that when I saw it, I had no idea why these obviously gay guys would want Marlena to wait for them?
-
I was younger then. I didn't understand about wimmen.
-
Oh...
The "Claymaniacs" were in full-force outside The Shubert Theatre tonight! -And, apparently, last night too when Clay Aiken started his stint in Spamalot.
*A friend of mine who works merchandise for the show said that the souvenir program sales for last night, his first night in the show were quite good - and quite surprising. He sold $5,000 alone in just programs - they've printed a special pullout centerfold of Clay Aiken. They've been averaging about a fifth of that lately. Guess they're going to increase their order from the printer next week.
-
Hmm... I wonder if DR td is talking about...
Are you scared of The Sisters or The Brothers? Or of John Travolta?
Hmm... I guess it must be...

BINGO!!!!
;D

I was ever so much younger then, now, at least I know I know him well.
Forgive me, I don't know what brought on that bought of CHESS. . . . :-\
-
I had heard something about a special insert for Clay Aiken.
-
Remember the controversy when an Andrews Sisters musical was being sold as "an explosion of knockout dancing?"

Insert Tab "A" into Slot "B?"

Tab who? Slut who?

Sorry, my herring is bad (a Bosom Buddies reference)

Travolta hadn't even done SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER! ! !

I thought perhaps you were having breakfast with Ula on the beach.

Ma, those men are gay. Why are they rolling all over each other on the floor in front of Mitzi?
You'll understand when you're older, it's called acting.

Fun fact: The gargoyles in Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dames (both Parts 1 and 2) are named Victor, Hugo and Laverne.

Cold here tonight.... Contemplating going to sit on the couch with a mug of hot chocolate and read and watch a bit of telly...
-
Oh... And as I was watching the final kick line in A Chorus Line, I realized that I had yet to invoice them for the past couple of work sessions I played. Oops!
-
Query which probably won't/can't be answered, since we're over here on page eight:
When Columbia issued a couple of its musicals on cd, that one with Janie Sell and Marilu Henner AND the C&W extravaganza PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES, quite a few of the tracks were different than their lp counterparts (I also think this happened with IRENE, iirc).
Does anyone know why these alternate versions were used? Why weren't they put on the discs as tracks, rather than replacing existing ones?
I, for one, prefer the lp version of "The Night Dolly Parton was Almost Mine" on PUMP BOYS.

I actually used to know the reason for the differences between the LP and CD releases of Pump Boys & Dinettes, but the details are eluding my brain right now... But lemme see if some Googling will refresh my memory.

I have returned from THE COLORED MUSEUM. I nicely staged and beautifully acted 90 minutes of theater. I would highly recommend it to anyone, as long as they will be in Tacoma by no later than 2:00 p.m. tomorrow, when it has its final performance.
-
Good evening, fellow Dear Readers.
I have just finished a day of meetings held by some kind of motivating consultant where we learned such interesting things as "accountability issues," "on the same page," "move forward," and "post-modern." Then we ate too much food.
More tomorrow. Including the food.

I just read online that Suzanne Pleshette has passed away.
-
Back from the Aero and seeing Carmen Jones but not Porgy and Bess. They cancelled that screening but not really telling anyone in advance. The reason they gave was rights issues, but we pretty much know that the Gershwin estate has allowed these one-off screenings - when I pressed one of the employees further, I got the impression that they'd never quite made the deal with the fellow (who I know well) who owns the one and only showable print. He's a fairly sickening person now and then, but the theater should never have announced this without having the deal set. We did hear that they'd run a little of Exodus and that the color and print are great. I'm a bit concerned only because of what Carmen Jones looked like this evening, which I'll go into in greater detail in the notes - it was a terrific print, perhaps recently struck but either the print wasn't timed correctly and had too much yellow put in, or the projector lamp is biased towards yellow - you could see clearly that all the color was there, and could have been perfect - so it's one of those two things. I checked the DVD when I got home and the color has much less yellow and the proper amount of blue and looks fantastic and perfect. Of course, tonight's showing rather looked like the prints of today's films that are all pumped with yellow.

Page eight??? On a Saturday night?
-
That's hardly sporting.
-
Will we never get to page nine?
-
Certainly we have enough posters here to get to page nine, but their all sitting there like so much fish.
-
What am I, doing a monologue?
-
If you can do a monologue can you also do a stereologue?
-
I will single-handedly take us to page nine.

Welcome ten GUESTS.

Good night!

Wow, all those people who were here when I was making with the monologue left without so much as a goodbye. They will RUE the day, oh, yes, they will RUE the day.
-
Apparently, we will never reach page nine because it's ever so much more fun to be errant and truant completely or to WUSSBURGER.
-
And I mean that in the nicest possible way.
-
That is too bad about Suzanne Pleshette, but I had heard she was pretty ill with lung cancer. What a wonderful actress she was.
-
So no LIL ABNER, huh :-\
-
AARRGGHH!! I downloaded the "Three Penny Opera" lp that TD most kindly posted about earlier. I've been trying to print a booklet that I made up and my printer won't work. >:( I don't know why. :P
