Title: PORGY AND BESS STAY HOME

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a certain Bizet-ness about them, and now it is time for you to post until the Carmen Cows come home.

I'm listening to the digital music show tunes channel (channel 936) and right now Barbra Streisand is singing "I Loves You Porgy/Porgy, I's Your Woman Now."

Now, the song "Bargaining" from the original Broadway cast recording of Do I Hear a Waltz? is on.  It's sung by Sergio Franchi and Elizabeth Allen.

I just read a review of the new 2-CD Donmar production of  Parade (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/114374.html), and for the most part, it sounds like a positive review.  However, it's sending some mixed messages.

One sentence reads, "The results, at least insofar as they are presented...on the new cast recording, indicate that Brown, Uhry and Ashford have improved and strengthened the piece."

But then two sentences later, "The changes necessitated by the Donmar experience have not necessarily improved it."

What??  It's improved, but it's not improved??  Make up my mind, will ya?

When I read BK's notes, where he stated that Carmen Jones had an all Black cast (capitalization his), I thought he meant that the film co-starred Jack Black, Karen Black, Lucas Black, Shirley Temple Black, and Johnny Cash (as the Man in Black).

I also loved this week's show.  Very interesting twist (having us think the ghost was the one Jim saw in the fire/explosion). I wasn't expecting the ghost to be connected to the woman nurse/doctor instead.

The one thing i find odd though is how mad they always have these ghosts in the beginning.  And how they clearly show them doing things (turning lights on, making the woman's hands go out of control with the needle in it).

Miss Blue Moon loves this weather - it is 0 degrees with a -15 Wind Chill Factor.  She likes to walk around in the yard, and then go into her house and lie on the straw bed.

She won't come in - so I will just keep watch at the door so she knows she can be inside when she wants.  She did sleep inside last night.

Re: Felix Leighter
David Heddison is the only actor to play the role twice and Jeffrey Wright is slated to reprise his role for a second time in the next Bond film.

Jack Lord (Felix Leighter #1) starred in his own series Stoney Burke and did not repeat the role as it was supporting role and he was a "star" now. He would work in TV guest star roles before Hawaii 5-0 came around with the exception of 2 movies right before the series began

Cec Linder (Felix Leighter #2) was a friend of Harry Saltzman's from Canada.

Rik Van Nutter (Felix Leighter #3) Broccoli and Saltzman were not the producers of this fim. Although the actor was American he worked in Italy for most of his career. Most of the other actors in major roles were from Italy as some of the money raised was from that country

Norman(n) Burton (Felix Leighter #4) Don't know why the didn't reuse him.

David Heddison (Felix Leighter #5) Live and Let Die & License To Kill and when When the Living Daylights was being filmed he was doing the tv series Another World

Bernie Casey (Felix Leighter #6) played the role in the remake of Thunderball in the "other" Bond film that came out that year Never Say Never which like the original Casino Royale is not consider part of the Bond cannon.

John Terry (Felix Leighter #7) for the next film they brought back David Heddison. When the Living Daylights was being filmed he was doing the tv series Another World

Jeffrey Wright (Felix Lighter #8) He is slated to repeat his role in the next Bond film. They wanted a fresh start and only Judi Dench repeat her role from previous films.

Suzanne Pleshette was a wonderful light actress, as her years with Bob Newhart proved.  Those are my favorite Suzanne Pleshette performances, and none made me laugh as much as the series-ender of NEWHART.  "No more Japanese food before going to bed," or something similar.   :D
Sad that she has passed.

Jennifer- re the ghosts on GHOST WHISPERER often being mad

SPOILER

Our thought on this has been that since they're ghosts who are in conflict that keeps them from passing, that's probably why they seem to be mad and then resolve the conflicts by the end of the show.  The ones that aren't in conflict when they die presumably don't have the unresolved business (such as the guy who really died in that fire at the beginning of the show, seems like he must have been at peace with the decision to save the other person).  My theory about the show has been that the ghost whisperer is actually visited by many ghosts, but we (the teevee audience) see the most interesting and conflicted ones on the show - I'm probably overthinking the theory behind the show's premise, though!!!

COLD CASE is a new episode tonight, and since the CBS football game starts earlier in the afternoon today, perhaps the CBS prime time line-up will air on time. At 9, I'll check to make sure.

Someone over at HTF said that one of the high def movie channels (HDNet perhaps) showed an HD version of EXODUS a few days ago that he said looked spectacular. Hopefully that means that a cleaned-up, color correct, and sharp DVD and/or Blu-ray are in the works for the movie.

I refused to buy the DVD release after reading reviews as to the quality of the transfer. I already had it on laserdisc which was bad enough.

Good morning, all!  I left Toyland about 2:30 pm yesterday, stopped at Staples and bought their last three (AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!) storage boxes, and went home to continue the ordeal.  Around 7:30 pm, I realized I hadn't eaten for about 12 hours so I scrambled some eggs, continued the sorting, watched last week's Pwoject Wunway at 8, and hit the MBarnum Nemorial Air Mattress around 9:15.  I was up this morning around 6:15, used the washers in the basement since the laundromat down the block doesn't open on Sundays until 8.

While the laundry was in, I cleaned out another closet and tossed a lot of old sheets, towels, Christmas wrapping, and other junk.  I also carted a lot of junk - an old dustbuster, a mixer I haven't used in over 15 years - out to the street, and I believe everything fablic I want to keep is at the drycleaner's or sealed in plastic bag, about 20 of which are now filling my bathtub while I clean the area of the apartment they were occupying.  Tonight, I'll move the plastic bags back to their original space and work o0n the other side of the apartment.

Before I left this morning, I sprayed the back of the piano and the inside of the piano bench with this bedbug spray I had used on the mattress and bed frame.  On my way home this afternon, I'll stop at another Staples and (hopefully) pick up more storage boxes.  When I get there, I'll open the windows to ventilate the apartment for 30 minutes before moving back in to continue the work.

i have to say, as well, that the timing for this megillah is perfect: I'm between jobs other than this one at Toyland, and I know there's work coming in. Ron Raines has a request, and Karen Masn just called me about 7 or 8 charts. We're meeting on Jan 29 about it when she returns from a gig in Arizona(?).  I've got to put together the rental package for "The Brain From Planet X" for Rodgers & Hammerstein, and I'm grateful that BK has been too busy with other things to send it last week.

So, it's a necessary apartment cleaning and weeding and the timing's just right.  I just wish it hadn't been caused by vermin.

I thank you all for your sympathy over the situation, but I do wish you'd all fly in and lend me a hand!

Thanks, DR MattH! I think  maintaining some sense of humor and thinking logically about how to progress is keeping me going.  The other day I was really down and I'm so lucky to have Ron Raines as a friend; he's seen me at my darkest over the thing, and he keeps an eye on me. He also helps me keep my awareness of the absurdity of it all.

I must say that the DVD of Exodus (which I did buy, but only for $2.99) was one of the few times I was completely appalled by a transfer.   Hideous.

Re:  The Birds.  We drove through Bodega Bay on our big Hwy 1/101 journey south through California last summer.  We even stopped at the little cafe (now not so little, LOL) where the "bird lady" explains everything in the movie after Tippi gets her little head whacked, and right before the gas station goes ker-boom.

No, it's not up to the level of LOST (few shows have that degree of complexity), but I'd be very surprised if you aren't drawn into the show as the various plot threads start to merge.

And seeing it on HD adds doubly to the pleasure.

OK---so I know I'm in a room full of music lovers and critics, but I have to share this video. It's horribly shot, but it's my cousin's son (15 years old) singing and playing piano at a school talent show. He also writes piano music; he's done some great original rags in the style of Scott Joplin.

Some observations on current voting patterns:

Last special election of a CA School Board Seat:

Registered Voters: 55,852
Ballots cast: 8968 (16% turnout)
Absentee Ballots: 5,082 (57%)
Winner: 3641 (41% of votes cast)

So - the winner was probably already decided before election day!

The heavy use of Absentee Ballots puts a very different spin on campaign game-plans;  the old-time conventional wisdom was to save your heavy guns for the week before election day.

NOTE 1. All this business about showing ID to vote is meaningless when most ballots are mailed in.

NOTE 2: Voters have been sending in ballots for weeks in the Florida Primary - the result may already be in the bag!

Quite a pretty day here in the City of Studio.  I attended to a few things this morning and now am almost de-groggified and shall begin writing shortly.  I saved the wrap up/last paragraph of the current chapter, so that will only take a few minutes, then I'll go back and look at yesterday's pages, then mush on.

DR edisaurus - You have a talented cousin!  So, is he is still 15 now?  Do you happen to know if he plays by ear? or with music? or a combo of both?  He's definitely using the Michael Bublé arrangement of the song, but the published accompaniment of that song is not that filled out.  Good for him.  I also detect a bit of classical and/or show music "tendencies" in his voice.  Do you know if he take voice lessons?  All in all, a good performance.

I've read several bombastic posts online from non-working WGA members saying people "they've" talked to think the DGA's deal is bad.  Now, the DGA is not a stupid union.  Unlike the WGA, they are simply not run by bombastic publicity-seeking people (rather like the stagehands union during their strike) - endless posturing.  One such non-working WGA member posted that the WGA "might" take the DGA deal but with MUCH better terms - is he insane?  In the end, they'll settle in the next two weeks and in the end it will either be the same deal as the DGA or one that is very similar.  But you watch - they will trumpet their deal and how happy they are - you wait and see.

Thanks for watching, Jose!

He's still in HS, but this may be his senior year. He also writes music and I think he studied classical music but he really seems to be fond of Gershwin and Joplin. I knew he could play well but I had never heard him sing before.

He and his brothers like to do short films so I sense he finds acting fun. He also did a great little stop-motion animation a few years ago for Christmas.

There are other clips on the YouTube link from his family, and there is another where he plays piano in a skit where he's a piano man and has some parody lyrics to popular songs. I wish the recording was better but you can still hear what a natural piano player he is.

Good News for bk: Karma attacks cell phone users:

THE INDEPENDENT (http://news.independent.co.uk/sci_tech/article3353768.ece)

Quote
Mobile phone radiation wrecks your sleep

Phone makers' own scientists discover that bedtime use can lead to headaches, confusion and depression
Radiation from mobile phones delays and reduces sleep, and causes headaches and confusion, according to a new study.

The research, sponsored by the mobile phone companies themselves, shows that using the handsets before bed causes people to take longer to reach the deeper stages of sleep and to spend less time in them, interfering with the body's ability to repair damage suffered during the day.

The findings are especially alarming for children and teenagers, most of whom – surveys suggest – use their phones late at night and who especially need sleep. Their failure to get enough can lead to mood and personality changes, ADHD-like symptoms, depression, lack of concentration and poor academic performance.

i have to say, as well, that the timing for this megillah is perfect: I'm between jobs other than this one at Toyland, and I know there's work coming in.

•   Number 1 -- Ireland

Ireland was chosen by Lonely Planet as the World's Friendliest Country. Ireland's history is based on people working, prospering, socializing, and sometimes fighting together. Tourists can witness it firsthand by watching events like the Galway Arts Festival, complete with street performers, comedy acts and visual arts. Based on the country's falling crime rates, the people of Ireland would rather cozy up at the pub than inflict pain on visitors. In a place that has had its own share of tough times, the people have found comfort through socializing and welcoming newcomers.

Since I watched MONK last night, I had nothing on the DVR to watch while I cooked and ate lunch so I put in HELLO DOLLY and watched the first 50 minutes of it.

HELLO DOLLY is another of the titles I've been dying to watch upconverted on my sort-of new TV, but today was my first opportunity. It looked very nice, but, of course, not quite HD in dimensionality. The sound impressed me more. Maybe it's my new receiver, but the audio sounded much fuller to me watching it this time.

After I finished eating, I finishing watching the reaminder of the CLEO FROM 5 to 7 featurettes. One was a film retracing Cleo's walk and ride around present day Paris during the 89 minutes of the film. They stopped to show buildings or areas that were no longer the same as in the film, and of course the film was speeded up so that it took exactly 9 minutes to take the complete round trip.

I did watch LE BONHEUR this afternoon. A quiet, sedate film that left the viewer with much to think about afterwards. The restoration of the film did get the color back (Varda says in a bonus feature that the copy she had was already faded to pink and beige), but the image is fairly soft unlike the vivid sharpness of the two previous films of hers I watched last night (both in B&W).

In the meantime...

I had another wonderful time playing for Matthew Morrison this afternoon.  For someone who started off as a dancer, he really has come a long way voice-wise.  The songs seem to be sitting and fitting in his voice nicely right now, and he has a couple of weeks to let it all settle, and to play with them before South Pacific opens.  :)

After Matthew's lesson, I walked down my friend's Chris' place to drop off some music, and then proceeded to walk over to Broadway since I was in the mood - and in need of some nourishment.  Well, at least a snack.  And, lo and behold, there was Silver Moon Bakery (http://silvermoonbakery.com/) right at the corner of 140th and Broadway.  :)

I picked up two of their newest treats: a Herbed Brie (Bread) Stick, and a Chocolate Chip Espresso Roll.  The Herbed Brie Stick was very good - basically a nice piece of brie with some herbs tucked into some bread dough, then baked until the crust is golden brown, and the cheese starts to melt and get even yummier.  Sort of like a Provençal calzone/turnover.  The Chocolate Chip Espresso dough was made of a coffe-infused brioche dough with dark chocolate chunks.  Again, very yummy, and a good balance of flavors.  -And it went perfectly with my Mocha Latte I picked up from Oren's Daily Roast up the street. :)

Since I was near Columbia University, I gave my friend Michael - a.k.a. one of my latest "Enablees" - a ring to see what he was up to.  He was about to head out to do some grocery shopping for the week, and he was thinking of heading up to the nice, big Fairway since he had never been there before.  Well, being the Good Enabler that I am, I told him I'd be more than happen to join him!  We met up a few minutes later, and headed to the subway.  It was only a nine block walk away, but, boy(!!!), is it cold today!!! (Maybe not as cold as it is in the midwest, right now, but definitely cold enough to warrant taking the subway one stop.)

When we got down the platform... -Hey, is that Kevin Burrows?... And, yes, it was Kevin!  We hadn't seen each in a while, and, lo and behold, he was actually on his way to Fairway too to do some shopping!  So, we all boarded the next 1 Train, and then Kevin and I proceeded to catch up during our walking and shopping.  Kevin is Christopher Sieber's partner, who just returned to Spamalot... with Clay Aiken.  So... ;)

Once we got to Fairway - which is truly one big ole super(!)market - we said our goodbyes since we didn't think we'd run into each again before we had made our way out that maze of produce, dry goods and the "Cold Room".  However, it turned out that all three of us ended up at the check out registers at the same time, so we were all able to walk back to the subway together too.  :)

TJ, the bagger at the store who has taken a shine to Sweeney Todd, has finally finished watching the DVD of the original production.  This is after having seen Tim Burton's film at least four times.

Good news!  He really liked it!  He liked how different it is from the film, and understood why it is different.  (This is a kid who does not oridinarly like musicals.)  But just as important is that he liked it as a stage production.

He'll get it back to me as soon as our schedules mesh.

Another good deed done.  *happy sigh*

DRs JoseSPiano and/or elmore3003: have either of you heard this?

Quasthoff crooning like Sinatra.  In English, and in a basso range.   Strangely surreal!  :)

DR singdaw - I finally bought it and gave it a listen a few months ago.  I'm not sure I'd call it "surreal", more like "restrained".  I had had very good things about the album from other people before I bought it, and I had also come across some very positive reviews too.  Alas, it is a bit of a strange bird.  The basso range doesn't bother me at all - sort of in that Joe Williams mode.  And unlike a lot of "Classical" singers, his English diction and accent is very "normal" - although, I do hear a bit of his German background sneaking in every now and then.  However, a lot of it just seems a bit too easy, and a bit too relaxed, a bit too cool.  I love the moments - and they're few and far between - where he shows off his upper range, but for the most part it all seems comfortable.  Which isn't a good thing or a bad thing.  It's just a thing.

At least this venture is nowhere near the ghastly mess of Renee Fleming's "pop" album, "Haunted Heart", and not as cheesy and middle-of-the-road as  Nathan Gunn's recent album, "Just Before Sunrise".

Hmm... I haven't listened to my Sylvia McNair and André Previn albums in a while... Hmm...

I think there may be - mainly based on the fact that R&H has just re-edited and prepared another edition of the score in conjunction with this revival.  So... We shall see.

It's a very old computer - so I think it's just not as friendly to newer technology.

The format of ICA is similar to that of the original Iron Chef.  In this version, however, each chef is required to finish five dishes using the secret ingredient - the original left the total number of dishes wide open.

The treatment of the food is of the same high caliber.  The treatment of the judges tends to be better - even when the judge is a celebrity, he or she usually has a strong connection to food, unlike the actresses of the Japanese show, who were made to look a little foolish, IMO.

ICA has an impressive list of regulars, from lead commentator Alton Brown (Good Eats) and Kevin Brauch reporting from the kitchen floor, to the chefs: Bobby Flay, Mario Batali, Cat Cora, and Michael Symon are all highly regarded chefs with their own restaurants, and Masaharu Morimoto is, of course, one of the original chefs from the Japanese program.

Fun?  That's a relative term, Michael.  I enjoy it more than the original, and der B is now hooked.  You might enjoy it as much, or not.  But you'll never know until you give it a try.

(BTW, Morimoto is the Iron Chef in tonight's show.  So it will be like reuniting with a familiar face!)

Title: Re:PORGY AND BESS STAY HOME

I don't connect depression with dust, Jane - my chronic depression is just that, with little changes from outside influences, other than an occasional lack of sleep.

I'm much more concerned with how our customers react to the changes.  The store will be reworking three aisles at a time, so part of my job will be keeping track of where the displaced items on those aisles have been moved to, and directing the customers to those areas (particularly when I'm on self-scan duty - I'm a store directory even in normal times).

The other vital areas are going to be produce, the bakery, deli, and our fish market.  Protecting those foods from the dust will be tricky (although not my responsibility).

And, while all this is going on, we've a new store opening in Long Neck, maybe twenty minutes away.  This means we've got a whole new store of employees to be trained in time for the opening in April.  While most of that training will be taking place at our Millville store, some of the trainees will be at our store (and some of our staff will be moving to Long Neck!), and the job fairs will be held on Thursdays and Fridays for the next month or so.

All in all, this makes for a busy, exciting time for us.  And no sooner is this all finished, and we'll be back in the Summer season!

And you thought life in a resort town would be relaxed?  No way!

If that $800 rebate does come through I know what I will do with it. I will get my data pulled off my old hard drive. We got a couple of estimates on the cost today and they average between $600 and $1000. The cheaper was at TekServe, an Apple store that does data restoration on all kinds of computers. When the system crashed I lost all my current BBC clips. There were about 6 (IIRC) that I had not yet backed up to disk. They are sitting on the hard drive unattainable. $600 is too much to spend just to get the clips but, as I said, if the $800 comes along I will consider it found money and go back to TekServe and take them up on their practically guaranteed offer. When we explained the situation she seemed to think that the material could be pulled off with little problem. The reason it costs so much is the labor involved.

Oh, well, since I'm posting on Sunday evening from home you can assume the computer is up and running. It seems to be fine. Anthony is watching the latest Jane Austen installment on Channel 13 and I'm about to go to bed, even though I don't have to work tomorrow.

Anthony has two auditions tomorrow so I will just sleep late, eat my oatmeal, wash my bowl and see what the day brings.

OY!  Some of the foodie blogs have brought up the $19 drinks at Gramercy Park Hotel.  Apparently, they're priced that high in order to encourage their customers to try their more adventurous offerings.  -Some of which are more than $19.

Alas, pricey drinks seem to the semi-new thing.  If I'm in the mood for a "nice" drink - and if I'm properly attired - I like heading to the Campbell Apartment (http://www.hospitalityholdings.com/) in Grand Central Station.  But even some places in the Theatre District have a standard price of $15 for cocktails.  :-\

*However, the Bread Bar at Tabla off of Madison Square Park has decently priced drinks - and the Indian appetizers are some of the best in the city.

One of my Christmas Gifts was a DVD of the series Studio 60

The Vixter was away this weekdn and it was too clod to go out so Vixdad and fired up the old dvd player and watched the series over the weekend

I am still a fan and I am still sorry that the series was not renewed.

The Vixter was home by time we watched the last episode. She has never seen the series as it came on after her bedtime She suprised me when she commented,

"I guess this was the series finale huh?"

"How did you know?" I asked

"Well all the storylines were so neatly resolved, they would have left at least two of them as cliffhangers for the next season if they were renewed."

guess she's ready to be a TV exec....

(well she is the same age as most of them )

I finished watching all of the bonus features on the LE BONHEUR DVD. There were a ton of them including another short film (30 minutes) made in 1958 which was basically a travelogue of the French Riviera done in the Varda style.

I had a little less than two hours before the start of COLD CASE, so I pulled off the shelf a favorite film of mine I haven't watched in a long time - RADIO DAYS. What a wonderful film it is! Very nostalgic, interesting characters, and some great cameos.

Of course, the minute COLD CASE started, I realized that CBS was playing a rerun (actually the season premiere) which is one of the few COLD CASE episodes I've seen this season, so I turned it off immediately.

With two hours of prime time left and absolutely nothing of interest on TV for me, I went ahead and pulled out the last of the Varda films in the set - VAGABOND. It's the longest of the four films - 106 minutes which certainly isn't long by modern standards.

It's a very melancholy story. A young girl is found dead in a ditch, and we then trace the last three weeks of her life leading up to the death. She's a gypsy, living off her wits and the kindness of strangers, and we get to meet quite a few strangers during the running time - some nice and some not so nice. Still, you know she's coming to a bad end, so it's like a march toward the gallows, and it's a slow, increasingly depressing march. Glad I saw it, but I'm sure I'd never want to watch it again.

This DVD has quite a few bonus features on it as well, but I'll get to them tomorrow. Doesn't look to be quite as many special features as on the past two films.

Off to finish up the Bollywood war film HAQEEQAT (1964) which revolves around several soldiers during the Indo-China War of 1962.

For a Bollywood film it is quite realistically done (despite the musical numbers), and very along the lines of ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT.

Re: The DOOL clips

The actors playing the pere et mere Brady are different actors do them know. Were they the originals (who I believe both quit) or were they replacements for the originals who were then replaced by originals when they decided to come back?

Yes, the original actors, Frank Parker and Peggy McKay left the show for about a year or so then came back. Shawn at this time was played by Lew Ayres. I dont remember who played Caroline.  Frank and Peggy returned in 1985. I know it was during the Stockholm story line started and it was a good couple of years that they were back before Jack raped Kayla.  If I remember right it was just as the Stockholm story was starting in mid 1985.

Just finished filling out a survey after my 4 hour journey into getting a DNS prob solved with my internet provider yesterday. I wills ay this I have never been treated as rudely as I was at that time. I was jerked around for four hours and rudely spoken to by three condescending jerks. When I finally got to the fourth person, it was solved in a few minutes. I truly did not deserve the treatment I got. I was not a happy camper.

He's currently taking a break, and resting, and starting to recuperate.  His computer is still down at the office, so he can't post from home.  Hopefully, this bout will pass quickly, otherwise, he may have to postpone the exterminator's appointment for later in the week.  Any and all Good Vibes and Wishes would be much appreciated.

My friend Joshua went to Ireland last summer before we started rehearsals for Nite of the Living Dead! The Musical!  He's of Irish descent, so he wanted to visit where his people are from.  I don't think it was his first time, but it was his first time that he went all by himself.  He loved it and said that the people there were very friendly. :)
