yesterdqay TOD:Boston used to have a CINERAMA theater: Seeing HOW THE WEST WAS WON and 2001 there was very exciting: watching them later on a regular screen, Ho-Hum(esp 2001)We used to have to wait a year for 'hard-tickets' like Ben-Hur to hit my home town, altho the two big theaters  we had were good sized ones, as opposed to the cineplotzes that came later.Show Boat? Michael Jackson as Julie. Tomorrows tod-Oscar noms were as expected, except I didnt see a lead nom fo TL Jones and several favorites were missing, but the only way the nominations could be perfect would be 'If I ruled the World".

Happy Birthday, Elan.

And happy belated birthday, Pogue--I kept meaning to post that day and forgot!

Well, thanks (I think) to JR for alerting me to the Freeman documentary which ran on American Experience last night.  Absolutely appalling and fascinating, all at the same time, but no mention of FF, Allah be praised!  I got an astounding number of hits on my FF article starting last night, most coming from the Wikipedia article on Freeman, so it had an audience, that's for sure.

Yes, what WERE the upsets, because I didn't see Tommy Lee on any prediction lists - I really like him, and glad he's up, and I hear that film is very good (perhaps the worst title EVER, which is why I stayed away - I'll have to see it now).  So, who did they predict for the fifth slot?

I was delighted to see that three songs from ENCHANTED got nominated. Thrilled for Viggo's nomination as well.

Big upset: the greatly reviewed and huge hit THE SIMPSONS MOVIE not getting that third animated feature slot instead of SURF'S UP which was a big disappointment at the box-office and not well reviewed.

I was glad to see Marion Cotillard get the actress nod; I was afraid she might be overlooked after lack of exposure at the Golden Globes.

There seemed to be more support for Emile Hirsch, Ryan Gosling, and even Denzel Washington (in AMERICAN GANGSTERS) in the final weeks of Oscar buzz. IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH did so poorly that it's been out of the psyches of most folks who do these predictions.

I would have been shocked if she had been omitted. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see her win. I think only Julie Christie is competition for her.

Tuesday morning greetings!  Today is the last of my 11-in-a-row off and I woke up dizzy and slightly nauseous - I think it's my sinuses.  After several cups of coffee, breakfast, and some Antivert, I feel a bit better.

We had a dusting of snow, but nothing like the U of M pictures that I posted last night.

Happiest of birthdays to DR Elan!

Also James McAvoy in ATONEMENT was considered a front-runner for a Best Actor nomination. As usual, the actor categories always have far more worthy candidates that get overlooked than the actress categories.

Here's some interesting notes:

"Ratatouille"
Best Original Score
Best Sound Editing
Best Sound Mixing

And look at Enchantment:

BEST ORIGINAL SONG
"Falling Slowly" from "Once"
"Happy Working Song" from "Enchanted"
"Raise It Up" from "August Rush"
"So Close" from "Enchanted"
"That's How You Know" from "Enchanted"

Oscar Nominations:  Never, in my lifetime, have I felt so much "nothing" for an awards announcement.

This is a perfect year for such a list....a year in which the show might NOT go on because of the writer's strike.

I was surprised by some of the nominees, but totally put off by the hum-drumness of the overall package.

No Nikki Blonsky?  Really?  I mean, REALLY!  What a load of crap!

Cate Blanchett, brilliant actress that she is, may go down in Oscar history as the only actress to win supporting Oscars for portraying real, entertainment business, people -- Kate Hepburn and Bob Dylan.

I totally do NOT get the Oscar's love affair with the films of George Clooney...or his appeal to them for the acting Oscars.  But then, I also feel that way about Clint Eastwood.

It's a cold, gray day that promises off-on rain showers and colder temps tonight and through the week...with a new system moving in with colder temps and even more rain by Thursday night.

One might say the weather has colored my mood.  But those Oscar noms are totally uninspiring.

Yesterday, I watched two (count 'em 2) movies on HD DVD:  "Pride and Prejudice" with Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen, and "Elizabeth" with Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush.

I loved watching them in this splendid format which did splendiferous things with both films.  Awesome.

A note:  If I never see Joseph Fiennes in another movie, it will be too soon.

That said, I am appalled that NBC is airing something else in "Medium's" time slot the next four weeks.

That's a sure way to kill a program that's one of that network's best.

There's ALWAYS some brouhaha or other with AMPAS.  Generally, it seems there are more wannabes helping to make the rules than there are actuallyares.

The music categories, especially, seem to have suffered a great deal from a massive influx of minimally trained musicians who get into the Academy because they wrote a song some director thinks is "bitchin'" and they get hired to "score" a film (mind you, they don't "score" anything, but they get sole credit for the work done by the few "real" musicians who attempt to make a few notes sound like an inspired idea that can run through the fabric of a 90-minute film).

You are right on the mark, DR Ron Pulliam.

Carly Simon "composed" the score to Working Girl by humming into a tape recorder, from what I hear tell.

Charlie Chaplin "whistled" his themes to competent musicans who created the scores for all his movies.  Chaplin never wrote one note of music.

He won the scoring Oscar for 1952's "Limelight"...but he won it for the 1972 season.  Oscar rules were that a film could only be eligible for nominations if the film played in Los Angeles by a certain date.  It seems "Limelight" had never played L.A. before 1972 (can you BELIEVE that????) and was, therefore, eligible for the nomination.

They do have rules which is why Beyonce's name was removed from the ballot for the nomination of "Believe" from DREAMGIRLS last year. The names have to have contributed a certain percentage of the music and/or lyrics for inclusions, and she hadn't.

At this time I have no opinion on the Oscar nominations as I have not seen a single film up for an award...but I shall try to rectify this...although since several of the films seem to be R rated due to "bloody violence" I am not so sure I will enjoy the experience...but we shall see.

JUNO sounds interesting, as does ATONEMENT and MICHAEL CLAYTON (I love me some George Clooney!), IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH, and AWAY FROM HER.

Ron, with all due respect, I don't understand this concept:  "Charlie Chaplin 'whistled' his themes to competent musicans who created the scores for all his movies.  Chaplin never wrote one note of music."

Well, it seems from what you say that Chaplin never wrote down his music.  If he actually created the melody line that we hear, then he certainly wrote the notes of the melody line, even if someone else wrote the accompaniment.

I also knew that Allison was going to be proven right (re: what she saw in her dreams). It's slightly crazy that she is still always doubted.

I also did not realize the connection re: the ex building those replicas. But i did notice that he was wearing gloves the first time allison saw him. And it occured to me that he or the new husband were probably involved.

I didn't like the ending (guy who was going to hire joe selling the company). I don't really get why joe isn't doing anything re: his former employer. He should not have been fired. And considering the trauma he went through he should do something! Especially since there are no other companies in town that do that business!

Thank God Jerry Herman and Stephen Sondheim aren't whistlers.

I don't disagree that the "whistler" composed the melody (unwritten as it was).  But to compose a score based upon a melody requires real musical skill/talent.  I don't think Chaplin's few whistled notes MADE "Limelight" a beautifully scored film....it's the musicians who took those notes and created the underscore that MADE "Limelight" a beautifully scored film.

I guess you can call me a snob in that regard.  The adapters should have been nominated in the "adaptation" category.

But Irving Berlin relied on others to write down his music, as did Lionel Bart and Bob Merrill.  Would anyone argue they didn't write their melodies?

The problem hear is with the operative word "wrote".

Can we agree that Chaplin "composed" the melodies that someone else then transcribed.

(And, of course, createive credit goes to the "composer" not the "writer of notes".)

I've just had a thought:  "It was a dark and stormy morning, and after the sudden death of Mayor Small , things in Crabtown would never be normal again."

If I hire Stephen King to flesh that out into a novel, should I get full credit for writing it?

That said, I am appalled that NBC is airing something else in "Medium's" time slot the next four weeks.

Might this not be the network's way of having some new material for sweeps?

That blind person is dictating every word of that novel.  Of course he or she is the writer.

Do you think creating an underscore from a few notes of melody is nothing more significant than typing?

Is taking 10-15 seconds of whistling and then creating a score of 35-55 minutes the same thing as typing word-for-word dictation?

I don't believe it is.

OK, I misunderstood.  If Chaplin just came up with a few notes and not a whole melody with pitches and rhythms, that's different.

I'm all for Chaplin being credited for his "songs".  After all, he wrote "Smile" which was from "Limelight."  That is HIS...just as Carly Simon's song from "Working Girl" was hers.

And Irving Berlin and Bob Merrill, et al, were given just and due credit for their songs as they should have been.

But your comment above IS my argument...counterpoint, changes in keys, placement (Chaplin did tell his arrangers WHERE to put the music, to be fair), etc., is the "scoring" effort I think of in film (not the songs on which musicals succeed or fail).

I realize, of course, that the argument can be made that these folks are "arrangers" and/or "orchestrators" and not composers.

But I think sometimes a very fine line is drawn between arranging/orchestrating and composing.  Chaplin never had a clue about most of that.  He had a melody in mind and he knew where he wanted it to appear.

In fact, the most famous collaborator he had among Hollywood musicans was Alfred Newman, who did the honors for him in the movie "Modern Times."  Newman, the score's conductor, and David Raksin and Edward B. Powell all worked from Chaplin's "whistles", to provide material to fill in where Chaplin's whistling couldn't. Whatever "original" material any of those men contributed never was credited.  The credit read "Original Music by Charles Chaplin".  And it may be Chaplin had whistled more than one theme...certainly, the melodic memory anyone has of the films he made are due to Chaplin.

Chaplin always got sole credit for the score.  But IMO, it was always a song he "composed".  The rest of the score was "adaptation" rather than original composition.

Of course, that's movie scoring and not the same thing as musicals for theater or screen.

Yeah, I'd say the only "shock" was the omission of "The Simpsons Movie" from the Animation category.  However, it will be interesting to see which of the three nominees come away with the win.  "Persepolis" is certainly the odd-one out, but it would be cool if it won.

I'm pretty happy with the Oscar nominations. Yes, it would have been nice for Amy Adams to get recognized for Enchantment, but I have a feeling that she's going to have many future opportunities. I thought George Clooney was great in Michael Clayton, as were Tom Wilkinson and Tilda Swinton. I think the supporting actress and actor categories are the most competitive.

We need to be very specific.  Mr. Berlin, et al played the piano and wrote more than the melody line - he harmonized his tunes.  Harvey Schmidt doesn't read or write music down on paper, but he creates the musical language of the song, not just its melody line.  So, those are those types of composers.

The whistlers, who do not play and have no idea how to harmonize a song and create an accompaniment, let alone an arrangement, people like Mr. Newley and Mr. Bricusse, etc. who merely sing a tune into a recorder or to whomever their arranger is, completely rely on others to make the song have harmonics and accompaniment.

I am in the former category - I can't really notate music well enough and I leave it to others (I know the notes, just not enough about notation and timing), but the accompaniment, chords, structure and harmonics are all me.

In the musical I'm mentoring, when I've actually kept any of the original composers tunes, I'm sometimes completely reharmonized them so that they work, and I certainly have given them structure, and, most importantly form and pleasing arrangements, which make them work in a way their author would never have imagined, because he doesn't think in musical theater ways.

I Could not have finished without our DR Jose!  Thank you, dear friend!

Good afternoon, all!  Sunday was hell.  I knew by 1 pm I was getting sick, and after my trip for more storage boxes I spent 3-5 pm violently ill, confined to my bathroom.  After 5, I inflated the air mattress and fell over.  On Monday morning, I called to postpone the exterminator. They were closed for the holiday, so I left a message, felt stupid lying around feeling queasy and decided to continue the moving and shifting.  Around 1:30 I had two deliveries: matzoh ball soup and rice pudding from Arties and a huge floral display from a DR, followed shortly by a checkup callfrom the send.

It also turns out this is the latest bed bug situation in my building: 5A, 4A (over for now), 4B, 3B, 2B, and now me.  The neighbors from 4A stopped by to offer me good advice, and by the time DR Jose showed up, I was down to the last round of activity: all the oversized books sittign on the floor.  If he hadn't pitched in to help, I'd still be bagging them.

This morning I was up by 6:30, th laundry was in by 7, and at 8:15 I spoke to the extermonator.  I told him to send the man if I were still on the schedule.  At 10 am, the exterminator called to say he was caught in midtown traffic and he arrived by 11.  When he finished spraying his various poisons, I went to Manhattan Storage at 107 and Columbus to rent a storage space. By the end of the week, I hope a huge number of storage boxes are sitting in a new home.

So, I believe my bout of sickness was poisoning from the Pledge and the bug spray.  I'll never be certain.  Tonight, I have to deal with washing all the dishes and cooking utensils, vacuum- AGAIN! - and determining which plastic bags have clothing and things I need ASAP.  Nothing is coming out of their plastic for good until I know things are in safe con dition.

But....I equated "euphemism" with "euphonium" and came up with your favorite word....which was, after all, just another euphemism. :o

I love you all, but I gotta tell ya, after a week of this nonsense, I fail to see the humor in bedbugs or dead bugs.  Maybe it's because of my fatigue, my discomfort on sleeping on an air mattress every night and having to launder everything the next morning, having only two sets of clothing (what I'm wearing and what's waiting for tomorrow), getting flack from neighbors and friends about carrying bugs with me to and from the apartment, or my frustration that this goddamned situation isn't over and I don't know for how long it will be.

I would not wish this situation on my worst enemy, not even the Macbeths.

End of rant.

I haven't even mntioned the cuts and abrasions from moving furniture and cleaning all day or the expenses:
28 new storage boxes for the Miai U items: $140.00
8 loads of laundry on Day 1                          20.25
1 load of laundry per day since @ 4.75          28.50
     1 Dust Buster                                               35.00
1 Hoover cleaner with bag                             60.00
     2 cans bedbug spray                                     20.00
     1 steam iron                                                 12.00
plastic bags in two sizes                                 25.00+
hair dryer to zap mattress                             20.00
     storage rental                                             151.00/month

I suspect I'll be purchasing other pesticides as well in my effort to fight this.

And now I'm turning off the computer and heading uptown to clean again.

re the song credits: I read somewhere that when C>B>Sager was asked to work on a song for Arthur, she called Peter Allen and asked if she could use a line from a song they never finished;"Whe you get caught between the moon and new York City" He said fine, you can have the line, but make sure I'm credited in case the song wins the Oscar; Altho  I would have voted for Randy Newmans RAGTIME(song & scor)that year, there's some fairness in that credit, as 'the moon and new York City is sort of the hook the rest of the song hangs on.

"Medium" just started its third season three weeks ago...should its new episodes not be counted upon for "sweeps"?

I, for one, ain't gonna be watching something new at 10 p.m. on a Monday night, that's for sure.

Actually, MEDIUM is in its fourth season. The first season was short, of course, since it was a midseason replacement, but there were something like 16 episodes which lloks to be more than we're going to get this year.

Then I began season 5 of J.A.G. I remember at the time of the end of the 4th season when Elliott's character left the JAG Corps to return to aviation, there was a huge cry from fans dispondent about his leaving the series. Of course, by the end of episode 3 in the box set I'm looking at, he's left aviation to return to JAG, so all that moaning and groaning by fans wasn't necessary.

The shows have been just fine, but I'm glad to leave the flying stuff behind and get him back full-time into the courtrooms.

I've been very pleased that the episodes are anamorphic widescreen, so they look as good as sDVD can look. And the look of the show is definitely not that soft, grainy, overly processed look of NCIS, thankgoodness. Makes looking at back-to-back episodes so much less exhausting.

Now, if you want a really scary thought, let's suppose that the Republican Party nominates a moderate for President (such as McCain or Giulianni) and decides to nominate a hard conservative to "balance the ticket."  Having pulled out of the running so early, a certain actor may have placed himself nicely into the second spot.

 :o

(And why is it, when it comes to actors in politics, the Democrats get all the buzz with statements of support and fundraising and such, but it's the actors who are Republicans who actually run?  Just asking.)

I wonder why the actors who speak out get lambasted for exercising their rights to free speech by the media.  Good citizenship is speaking out and then supporting one's causes.

Lack of megalomania, perhaps?

I wonder why the actors who speak out get lambasted for exercising their rights to free speech by the media.  Good citizenship is speaking out and then supporting one's causes.

Most often, the actors who speak out (as opposed to running for office) are being questioned about their actual knowledge on the issues, and their use/abuse of their celebrity status.  Tom Cruise as an authority on psychology?  Puh and leaze.  And Chuck Norris dissing McCain as being too old to run for President, when McCain is just four years older than Norris?  Laughable.

There are many other actors who are advocates for various causes, who have taken the time to research those causes and actively participate (Ted Danson's helping found the American Oceans Campaign comes to mind, and who can forget Doris Day being more than a talking head for animal rights.  And Marlo Thomas' role as an advocate for children fits in.)  When an actor becomes involved with a cause, rather than just talking about it, then I believe that involvement deserves to be celebrated.

I have read that emmy winning actress lois Nettelton has passed away

Actress Lois Nettleton, who received a Tony Award nomination for the 1976 revival of Sidney Kingsley's They Knew What They Wanted, died on January 18 in Calfornia of lung cancer. She was 80.
Nettleton's 30-year Broadway career also included roles in such shows as Darkness at Noon, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof God and Kate Murphy, for which she received the Clarence Derwent Award, and Strangers. In 1973, she replaced Rosemary Harris as Blanche DuBois in an acclaimed production of A Streetcar Named Desire. Nettleton also worked regionally and Off-Broadway; in 2004, she appeared in How to Build a Better Tulip.

Nettleton played Lady Macbeth in a 1968 television film of the Shakespeare play opposite Earle Hyman. She also starred in the film versions of Period of Adjustment, The Man in the Glass Booth and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

She worked steadily on television, received Emmy Award nominations for her work on Fear on Trial, The Golden Girls, In the Heat of the Night, and The Last Bride of Salem. She received Daytime Emmy Awards for The American Woman: Portraits of Courage and Insight, She appeared as Virginia Benson on the popular daytime drama General Hospital and had a recurring role in In the Heat of the Night.

Nettleton was married to writer Jean Shepherd from 1961-1967; that union ended in divorce.

I loved Lois Nettleton, and she is, IIRC, the Aunt of one of the DJs Betsy worked with at KEX here in PDX.  Does anyone remember Lois' very short-lived (maybe not even half a season) series with Jerry Van Dyke, Accidental Family?

I've never heard of that show, but I remember her from "All That Glitters (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075658/)," a "Satirical look at a world where women rule and men are objectified."

I will always remember Lois Nettleton from an episode of Bracken's World.  The studio was in an uproar about whether or not to include a nude scene in a major film (it was 1969) - and Lois was the actress who had to make the decision along with her director husband if the scene was integral to the story, and if she would do it.

She did.

Would you care to have a Warren Beatty / Barbra Streisand ticket this fall?

Yup Warren Stevens was the voice and Eleanor Parker his secretary in Season One.  But Leslie was only in one episode, I think....and then Bracken's World....was just World......

I don't know if the "song" categories have rules like the writing categories do...which, IIRC, require that a certain percentage of a screenplay must have been written/rewritten before a credit can be given.

If I remember correctly, a person has to have written at least 10% (or is it 12%) of a song to be considered eligible as a writer for the Academy Award®...or was it the Grammys??

Either way, I remember when "The Prince of Egypt" was first released and P. Diddy added some material to the pop version "When You Believe" (originally written by Stephen Schwartz) that was recorded by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.  Because he didn't write "enough" per the rules of whichever Academy it was, he wasn't considered as a nominee for the award...which upset him to no end. ;)

Laughable.

I don't think Tom Cruise is a viable example here, since his meltdown has no political overtones/connotations.  Excessive celebrity is nothing more than that.

I have to say, however, that I have to question the critics' actual knowledge of the issues.  All I see is "spin".  It's one thing to carp about an actor getting "press" because of his celebrity, but most of those who carp do so because they don't want anyone using whatever celebrity they have to speak out.

And the lunacy of declaring someone's career as being DEAD because he speaks out against the war is a sicko's attempt to shut people up and prevent them from expressing opinions (I don't think Alec Baldwin or Sean Penn ever noticed their careers were dead.

They do have rules which is why Beyonce's name was removed from the ballot for the nomination of "Believe" from DREAMGIRLS last year. The names have to have contributed a certain percentage of the music and/or lyrics for inclusions, and she hadn't.

In this case, Beyonce wasn't nominated for the Oscar because the rules state that only three names can be listed as the creator of a song, and she was the fourth...not because she hadn't written enough.

And, finally, (well almost) I stopped into The Doughnut Plant (http://doughnutplant.com/).  I haven't been down there in months, and during the interim, he's introduced two new Signature Doughnuts:

Chocolate Blackout - Chocolate Cake Donut, with Chocolate Glaze and Chocolate Cake Crumbs
Tres Leches - Like a tres leches cake, but just in donut form.

As soon as bit into the Chocolate Blackout, I was in L-O-V-E!  ;) And my L-O-V-E only grew once I started sampling the Tres Leches one.  Both of them were light and rich at the same time.

Oh... And I also picked up a Blackberry Filled-Peanut Butter Glazed Doughnut for tomorrow morning.  Well, actually, I picked up two of those since the guy at the counter gave me one for free since it was close to closing time.  :)

The Chocolate Blackout is the first one on the left in the second row.
The Peanut Butter and Jelly is the first one in the third row, and the Tres Leches is the third one in the third row.

Dinner is oven-ing.  Or at least the taters are.

Very thinly sliced on the mandoline, then overlapping each other in a skillet, with melted butter brushed over the tater slices between layers.

Topped with Parm, and into a 400 oven.  Cook until crispy.

This will go with poached chicken breasts, and spinach wilted with sweated sliced mushers and shallots (seasoned with nutmeg).

In the meantime, the remodel of the store started today.

It turns out that my idea of heading in early was a good one.  I took notes on where the various goods had been moved, which helped several customers with questions.  (I also made a copy of my notes for Gail, who followed me on self-scan duty, which I hope helped her on the job... and I also hope she could read my notes.   ::))

There was one disgruntled customer who was railing against the changes, insisting that they would destroy the store and turn it into something from New England.   ???  He then turned against our store manager, Mark, blaming him for everything that is terrible about the store, and bemoaning how the former manager, Carol, "had" to retire.  (That Carol chose to retire, and that she had trained Mark for six years as her assistant manager before he was assigned to another (smaller) store as manager for a couple of years didn't matter to the complainer.

Some people just like to complain, I guess.  I just felt sorry for Mark, who took the abuse very well but still didn't deserve it.

Another *sigh*.

And from what I can gather:

First Row: Strawberry (or Raspberry) Glazed Yeast, Valrhona Chocolate Glazed Yeast, Coconut Glazed-Coconut Cream-Filled

Second Row: Chocolate Blackout Cake, Plain Yeast, Meyer Lemon Glazed Yeast (or possibly the Vanilla Bean Glazed)

Third Row: Jelly-Filled (Strawberry, Blueberry, Blackberry, ??) Yeast, Strawberry Cake, Tres Leches Cake, Chocolate Cake.

I'm also fond of his Pistachio-Glazed, Basil(!) Cake, etc., etc., etc.

What I don't get is he's found naked, face down & in Mary-Kate Olsen's place & no one suspects foul play.  ???

First of all, the report of the apartment belonging to Mary-Kate Olsen was a big ole piece of misinformation during the initial reports.  *I actually know where the Olsen Twins live, and it's not the same building, nor area.

Secondly, I seriously doubt that Mary-Kate Olsen would have had the strength to do anything to Heath Ledger - or anyone else.  Heck, I'd bet she'd have great difficulty opening a pill bottle.

I have just signed a petition for the protection of pets in the EU.  The following was sent to me by an American woman who has been working hard to change the treatment of pets & strays in Romania.

Signatures from everywhere will make a difference, so please read & decide if you would like to sign as well.

Subject: Allow a European Convention To Protect Pets and Stray Animals

A member of the European Parliament, Mr. Alain Hutchinson, is committed to cooperate with animal welfare and to get a "European Convention Protecting Pets and Stray Animals" passed as soon as possible.

He needs 1 million signatures in order to present the project to the Parliament. That means we need to get hard at work and collect those signatures.

Can you please help by signing this petition? It's easy and won't take much time. To go to the petition copy this link to your browser:

DON"T LET THE DEAD BUGS BITE - the musical thriller about dead bugs coming back to haunt the exterminators who killed them

We had a bed bug problem for several months, but not the epidemic that Elmore seems to be experiencing. We think that they came from the moving van when my roommate moved in. They traveled to my room but (knock on wood) after several months of battling and spraying and wrapping things in plastic, I do believe we got rid of them. I'm so sorry that you are having to go through that- it was a miserable time for us.

Well said. I totally agree.

Just had a chat with my Mom online. The teachers in her district just finished a battle w/ the school board for their 8% COLA. The district called it a "raise," said they couldn't afford it, even thought the $ comes from the state & not out of the district's pocket. At first the district said something like "We'll give you 5%" but the teachers wouldn't have it. District finally caved, but they've gotten away with it before. It's actually not explicitly illegal.

Well, just found out now that the district is now playing games with the aides (which hurts both them & the teachers). Keep in mind, these people aren't credentialed & do not work full time (the district won't have it...they'd have to give them benefits). They just have to pass some basic tests; some are college students, some are retired types but want to stay active & the extra $ doesn't hurt. These are people who are used to grading papers, running copies & sometimes taking small groups aside for about 20 minutes. And up to now, one aide may work in up to 3 classrooms per day, which isn't a lot of time to do much for the teacher.

Anyway, this is part of our conversation.

Mom: They took our aides away-not 5 days a wk for 1.5 hrs. But only 1 hr 2x a wk... I'm Swamped in paperwork.
Me: Criminal. To both the teachers & the aides. How are they supposed to eat?
(Granted, they help a few teachers out in the same day. The aides will still be on campus, but in a different capacity & for slightly less time.)
Me: Sounds like punishment for getting your 8%
Mom: What a mess... Aides who are (now) doing tutoring for big groups were out "sick" today. That's 5 aides, all on the same day.
Me: Hm....Blue flu?
Mom: That's what I said to the VP, but she didn't think so....
Many of the aides are in over their heads, & hate the new setup.
Me: I don't blame them.
Mom: Expected to do real teaching in groups.
Me: Argh.

It seems that every time I try to talk for longer than 30 seconds I break into a fit of wracking coughs that brings me to tears. I watched three more JAG episodes. They are entertaining, and I'm rather surprised at myself that I didn't watch the show when it was on TV since I do like courtroom dramas so much. No, get rid of the lazy, incompetent teachers and those who won't teach where they are most needed. Some of the best results in public education come from Charter schools unfettered by antiquated teacher contracts. Show me some improvement in test scores and graduation rates and I'll have more sympathy toward the teacher's.
