In the Big Rock Candy Mountains all the cops have wooden legs
And the bulldogs all have rubber teeth and the hens lay soft boiled eggs
The farmer's trees are full of fruit and the barns are full of hay
Oh, I'm bound to go where there ain't no snow
Where the rain don't fall and the wind don't blow
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

HOWEVER
The mention of the Pig n Whistle reminded me of the the CTV series of the same name. It ran for 10 years 1967-1977

It was set in a studio recreation of a British pub, Pig n Whistle starred British actor/singer John Hewer as the host of an inn that featured resident singers, dancers and an orchestra, plus guests, with members of the public forming the invited audience at tables round the room.

From what I understand that there is no copies known to exist of the series with the exception of 1 episode in the Canadian archives and that one they got by accident as it was mislabled as the political program called Question Period

Plans for this weekend include a potential get together this evening with Sing and Amy and Greg. If we don't see each other tonight then it will be Sunday afternoon before A & G return to Atlanta. Our Christmas tree is still up and fully decorated and we show it off to any and all. Since Amy and Greg didn't have a tree this year they want to come and partake of our late/early holiday decorations.

I enjoyed Winter Kills, the commentary, and the extras.  It is an interesting movie with lots of good people, lots of location photography.

Jeff Bridges and John Huston are particularly good.  Jeff has a nice scene, undraped.....and there are some wild notions going on that might not be so wild.

Now I want to read the book.

The green eyed monster has just reared its ugly head. JEALOUSY! An LP of EVENING PRIMROSE? I saw most of it when it was 1st broadcast(I missed the 1st song due to high school variety show practice.)I have the 3 various recordinng(mandy, Gary, NPH) and have enjoyed them all. The car CD last niteand this AM was BOUNCE and Petula Clark 65/65-chansons en francais; My Pet Clark collection of CDs is at about 60, and I'm hoping more show up. Is Dino at the piano the guy who used to play for Kathryn Kuhlman?/I ushered for her once, at Chrysler Arena home to U of M Basketball games. I must admit, not to be irreverant, but I always preferred the Ruth Buzzi version to the real thing. No current DVD, but tonite I'll watch this weeks Wire in advance and  La Vie En Rose with its Oscar nominated Stah!.

I can't do my taxes until next week. I don't get my W-2 form until today. I used to be able to do it from my last paycheck but that doesn't work anymore since I have pre-tax money taken out for health insurance and an SRA. It's still a simple return but I can't do it now until the last week of January. I used to be able to do it the first or second week (by phone) and I would have my refund direct deposited into my account by sometime in February.

Times have changed (and we've often rewound the clock).

When I say today's notes' title, this immediately sprang to mind:
SUGAR MOUNTAIN - JANIS IAN

DO YOU GO DOWN ON THE SIDE OF SUGAR MOUNTAIN
WHEN LEAVES ARE BROWN
AND THE SUNLIGHT SPLITS THE SKY
I HAVE FOUND THAT THE SEA BREEZE TEARS AT THE OCEAN
AND I HOPE SOMEBODY WILL LOVE ME ‘FORE I DIE

OH WILLOW, WEEP NO MORE MY LADY
THOUGH THE DAYS ARE LONG AND LAZY
AND THE SUN SITS HEAVY ON THE SKY
WEEP NO MORE, I’M HOMEWARD BOUND
I’M GONNA TEAR THIS MOUNTAIN DOWN
YOU’RE GONNA BE SOMEBODY BYE AND BYE

SUGAR MOUNTAIN TREES ARE MADE OF CANDY
AND THE SUN DRIPS HONEY IN YOUR EYES
EVERY FOUNTAIN’S WATER TASTES LIKE BRANDY
AND I KNOW SOMEBODY WILL LOVE ME ‘FORE I DIE

OH WILLOW, WEEP NO MORE MY LADY
THOUGH THE DAYS ARE LONG AND LAZY
AND THE SUN SITS HEAVY ON THE SKY
WEEP NO MORE, I’M HOMEWARD BOUND
I’M GONNA TEAR THIS MOUNTAIN DOWN
YOU’RE GONNA BE SOMEBODY BYE AND BYE

SUGAR MOUNTAIN LOVERS TASTE LIKE HONEY
AND THEIR LIPS LIKE ELDERBERRY WINE
EVERY OTHER STRANGER PALES AND WITHERS
AND I HOPE SOMEBODY WILL LOVE ME ‘FORE I DIE

OH WILLOW, WEEP NO MORE MY LADY
THOUGH THE DAYS ARE LONG AND LAZY
AND THE SUN SITS HEAVY ON THE SKY
WEEP NO MORE, I’M HOMEWARD BOUND
I’M GONNA TEAR THIS MOUNTAIN DOWN
YOU’RE GONNA BE SOMEBODY BYE AND BYE

CD:  BK, you must, must, must get this one:  Quarteto em Cy with The Tamba Trio.  In fact, you need to get everything ever recorded by Quarteto em Cy and The Tamba Trio (later Tamba 4 when they recorded for CTi).  You will be in aural heaven.

DVD:  I guess MattH and I are both reviewing The Jewish Americans, because that's up next for me.  We've also been wending our way through Heroes (up to about episode 6 or 7 now).  Interesting and mostly enjoyable, but not the "Lost" redux some people led me to believe it was.

As I emailed JR last night, the Mad Doctor Walter Freeman's son Frank "responded" (not really) to me on the American Experience website yesterday.  I had asked what he thought of his comments on the long-ago E! Mysteries and Scandals that his father had lobotomized FF and that he had the picture to prove it.  Since I then I've shown the picture was part of a 1949 Seattle P-I photo essay on lobotomy (that's not a joke, folks) where the patient's face is clearly seen in another photo.  It's not Frances.  And I also got the complete lobotomy and other surgery logs from state archives, where they're still extant.  Frances is not mentioned.  Frank Freeman offers a one sentence (false) rebuttal, saying her records "disappeared" years ago.  He's obviously unaware her sister Edith had them (and read parts of them to me), and that the hospital found them again a couple of years ago and were ready to release them to her nephew, but then decided he needed to get written consent from all living nieces and nephews, which he declined to do.

End of mini-rant.

Yes, DR JMK, THE JEWISH AMERICANS is my next review assignment. I did not watch the program on PBS when it aired over the last weeks, so this will be my first exposure to it. I will probably get to the first episode this afternoon, but I won't try to watch the entire thing in one day (as I did PIONEERS OF BROADCASTING). This looks longer and, obviously, something I have less expertise with before viewing it.

Well, I agree with you, but several fans of both shows who told me I needed to start watching Heroes indicated it was very similar in its complexity and the strands between the characters.  I find that comparison wanting, to say the least--Lost is so consistently clever in the way its characters' histories have interacted that I find Heroes' attempts to interweave its backstories a little wanting (at least so far--maybe it improves later in the season).  That said, we're very much enjoying the show, we just don't think it's at Lost's level.  Your mileage may vary.

In Season 1, I thought "Heroes" every bit as complex as "Lost", though different.  This past season's episodes, save one, were badly wanting.  That one episode -- "Four Months Ago" -- was absolutely brilliant and a promise that the writers had not lost the magic from Season 1.  The creator of "Heroes" has publicly admitted they went seriously awry in most of Season 2, especially with the "new" characters.  He also admitted they get seriously carried away with Hiro in the past and that arc should have been resolved much earlier.  He promised they'd do better in future episodes.

Good morning, all! Around 5 this morning, I felt a bug crawling on me, and by 5:05, I had tracked it down on my pillow and killed it.  It was indeed a bedbug, so I rose immediately, put on the coffee, took my bath, carted all trash down to the basement and wrapped every utensil and pan I'd washed on Tuesday evening in plastic bags. At 7 am, I was at the laundromat, by 7:15 I was having breakfast - the worst western omelette ever - and by 8 am, I'd been to the pharmacy and purchased a bug "bomb" to set off in the apartment.

I packed my things for the office, and by 8:30, I'd finished the laundry.  Shortly thereafter, the movers arrived to carry 43 cartons to my new storage space.  I set off the bug bomb, went up to the storage space to complete the move, and now here I am.  I've been up for 6 and a half hours and I'm exhausted.

I have no media watch to provide today, sadly.

DR MattH, re: your posts on CHUCK.

Yes I read your posts and would have seen that CHUCK was on. But i'm not talking about people at HHW.

If you remember i actually saw it was on on Monday. BUt like i said it was just a fluke that i saw it.

The only promo i saw for it was when i tuned in to CELEBRITY APPRENTICE. I saw the ad you mentioned with the cast. IT was very cute.   But i only saw it at 9pm (after the first episode was over).

I don't know if other CHUCK viewers saw promos during the week. I just know that i didn't.  Personally the only time i think a show should switch days is if it announces the change during the previous episode.

DR JOSE, re: last night's CELEBRITY APPRENTICE.

I am so annoyed with the men!  I hate that Trump calls them stars. To me they are not.  They simply got one $10K donation. I hate that their donation showed up 1 minute before the deadline, while nellie's woman showed up 1 minute after. Ughh!

I absolutely hate that they are letting them call their celeb contacts to get donations. This has ruined the show for me.  I think if they want to use themselves to promote their activity then that is fine. But it makes the tasks meaningless to allow them to call the rich people they know.

The only man i can tolerate is stephen baldwin. Even though he is opinionated, he seems to get things done. I think others like lennox lewis seem nice enough. But he's too quiet and i have not seen him do anything.

Don't like tito or the annoying british guy. And don't get me started on Vinnie (is that the Sopranos guy?). Next week looks good.

They did not choose well for the women. ANd i'm glad jenny went. She was nice. BUt not a leader in business.

My fav is marilu. I think she has been doing well. And although i don't personally care for Omarosa. I think she is good at business and has done quite well.

I don't get that the women lose by $1000 and trump calls them losers. With nellie's woman they would have won for sure!

You have my empathy, Larry....   :'(

So, you're all Bached in!

There's a fabulous original Percy Faith piece called "Bach's Lunch" (get it?) that he recorded when "Joy" (AKA Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring) was popular.  Percy also recorded "Joy."

Caught up with "Project Runway" last night....and I was surprised by the various ideas the designers put forth.  I liked Chris' better than the judges, and leave it Michael Kors to make some dismissive movie-wardrobe comment (Joan Cusack in "Working Girl" indeed!).

Christian's ego is appalling at times.  The disappointment on his face when he didn't WIN was unmistakable.  Granted, the judges gave him his props, especially in their deliberations, but I wonder if they often try to encourage others and reward based on that rather than their favorite design?  That said, there was totally nothing wrong with Ricky's winning outfit!  I liked Sweet Pea's best, though.

Not to seem like i'm disagreeing with everything DR MattH says, but i actually can see why people would say LOST and HEROES are similar.

I mean i would definitely recommend either to someone who only watched one of these.  Plus most people i know who watch one, actually watch both.

I"m not saying the stories are the same.  But they are both quite complex. And to me are the same style of show.

Btw, i cannot wait till LOST starts! It's one of my favorite shows (as is HEROES).

Their dissimilarites are in the story arcs.

Their similarities are in the supernatural events that impact/affect the characters, and the variety of characters, each of whom is unique.

In "Lost", the island is a mystical/magical/incomprehensible place where they must survive, and the world outside seems "lost".

In "Heroes", the world is changing and humans are evolving, several of whom are developing mystical/magical/incomprehensible powers and must hide from the world in order to survive.

In "Lost", the major characters all have different experiences with whatever power controls the island.  In "Heroes", the major characters all have different powers with which they must unite and save the world.

In "Lost", many of the major characters want to return to a normal life while a few wish to remain and experience the unexplainable.  In "Heroes", some of the major characters want to return to a normal life while others wish to use their powers to make the world a better place for everyone.

There are no other shows like them.

Last night's "Ugly Betty" was a very mixed bag for me.  I thought it too random/disconnected and it was a chore to "care" about any of the characters.

To the writers:  YES! I get it!  Betty loves Henry.  Henry loves Betty!  Each is jealous of the other in social situations where someone hits on either of them.  Move the story ALONG, please.

Media:

DVD:  We've also been wending our way through Heroes (up to about episode 6 or 7 now).  Interesting and mostly enjoyable, but not the "Lost" redux some people led me to believe it was.

You're nowhere NEAR far enough into Season 3 to lose heart.  The season started off a bit wonky, IMO (with so many characters located "elsewhere"), but once things start cracking, they don't stop.  You WILL be on the edge of your chair before it's over!

I TOTALLY misread the very comment I quoted...I mentally reversed the shows you were discussing.

Big Rock Candy Mountain

One evening as the sun went down and the jungle fire was burning
Down the track came a hobo hiking, and he said "boys I'm not turning
"I'm headed for a land that's far away, beside the crystal fountains
"So come with me, we'll go and see the Big Rock Candy Mountains"

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains there's a land that's fair and bright
Where the hand-outs grow on bushes and you sleep out every night
Where the boxcars all are empty and the sun shines every day
On the birds and the bees and the cigarette trees
The lemonade springs where the bluebird sings
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains all the cops have wooden legs
And the bulldogs all have rubber teeth and the hens lay soft-boiled eggs
The farmer's trees are full of fruit and the barns are full of hay
Oh I'm bound to go where there ain't no snow
Where the rain don't fall, the wind don't blow
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains you never change your socks
And the little streams of alcohol come a-trickling down the rocks
The brakemen have to tip their hats and the railroad bulls are blind
There's a lake of stew and of whiskey, too
You can paddle all around 'em in a big canoo
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains the jails are made of tin
And you can walk right out again as soon as you are in
There ain't no short-handled shovels, no axes, saws or picks
I'm a-goin' to stay where you sleep all day
Where they hung the jerk that invented work
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

I'll see you all this comin' fall in the Big Rock Candy Mountains

A little history of the Evening Primrose LP:  There was never a soundtrack LP released (there were for two other ABC Stage 67 shows).  In the 80s, I believe, Sondheim had some LPs pressed for his friends from his tape of the show.  The quality was excellent, save for that one hiccup on When.  It included not only the songs and their reprises, but the background music he wrote.  I've had three copies over the years - one I sold after I put it on cassette because someone really wanted it and was willing to pay enough that I didn't care about selling.  Then I got another, put that on CD, and sold the LP on eBay for about $400 (that was the going rate then - maybe more now).  The current copy I have, the white jacket cover is signed by Sondheim with a little note about the history of the LP, and is the best of the three copies I've owned.  I may sell that now.

I couldn't agree more. Some years ago, because of my allergies, I purchased dust-mite-barrier pillow protectors and have been using them ever since. I didn't purchase the mattress protectors, but, having heard DR ELMORE'S woes, I think I should do. Whether one's concern is allergies or bedbugs, these protectors (mattress and pillow) do make sense. It's a one-time purchase, they're washable, and mine are probably ten years old and still going strong. We tend to not think about these sorts of things until we experience a problem, but more and more I think it's a good idea.

The get-rid-of-dustmites people also recommend vacuuming the mattress regularly, which is something I had never heard of before.
Even houses that we think of as clean can harbor mites or bugs.

I didn't really plan on losing track of the series during the second season.  I just got a late nite work assignment one night.  Der Brucer recorded the show so we could watch it together at some point, but he had a lot of other shows that he wanted to watch every time I had some free time, so instead he kept recording Heroes and kept watching what he wanted to watch, and then the season was over and we still haven't gotten around towatching Heroes.

This is the exact same thing that happened with Lost last year, and with Desperate Housewives before that.  Somehow, we never felixed up Ugly Betty... lordy knows, we had enough opportunities.

Here is a recipe for rock candy (http://find.myrecipes.com/recipes/recipefinder.dyn?action=displayRecipe&recipe_id=1176193), although a double-width of thread works better than the thick cotton twine shown in the picture - not as chewey.

I thought of DR MBarnum when Peter Brown turned up as a guest star. I admit that I liked him very much too on LAWMAN.

I forgot about that one.  I wouldn't mind watching it again.

Amy and Greg have arrived!

I just spoke to Dear Amy and they are in the Edison Hotel. Unfortunately, they don't have free wireless so she may not get on line.

So the get together is on. I will see Sing and Amy and Greg tonight. We will drink hot cocoa (good thing it's cold today), have raspberry cobbler and sit in front of a roaring fire (courtesy of a DVD of the Yule Log). Don't worry if your ears begin to burn. We only talk about those that we love  ;)

And they call the wind Maria

Maria blows the stars around
And sends the clouds a’flyin’

Jennifer, that is what I was talking about regarding the ending of Medium.

SPOILERS

In reality there is no way the business could have been sold so quickly.  The potential boss could have hired Joe before selling it & stipulated Joe couldn’t be fired.  And give me a break, he was selling to spend time with his daughter who was about to be married.  A better explanation than that was needed, IMHO.

Keith & I also thought the job, Michael Gross & his wife (don’t know the actresses name), would have been interesting & fun on a regular basis.  Maybe they really are moving to Oregon ;)

My kind of salesman!  Unfortunately there are some biddies (technical term) at this Border's and they hassle me each and every week when I bring in one coupon from a previous sale and another from my Border's email.  As has been confirmed again and again (and I'm sure you know this), as long as the coupon codes are different, you can use more than one per transaction (as long as you're getting more than one item), but a couple of these older women just do not believe me, even though their manager has told them so.  The girl today, who was brand new (she had to ask how to do just about everything, so I'm hoping she's brand new, anyway) at least didn't hassle me about the various coupons I brought in today.

The audition I played today ended up finishing an hour earlier than scheduled - and this was even after we started 25 minutes late since one of the producers was stuck on a train!  They were looking for an Eva for Evita, so I got quite the earful of high belting.  Some OK, some good, and some quite thrilling.

Maxine took her car to a mechanic.

She told him, "Every time I take any of my friends out in my car, a terrible smell develops!!

"It never happens when I am driving alone!"

This intrigued the mechanic, so he said, "'OK, lets go for a spin ad see what the problem is."

Off they went.

She drove down a one-way street in the wrong direction at 70 MPH, swerved, hit the curb on both sides of the street, narrowly missed three pedestrians in pedestrian crossings, ran several red lights, and just missed a policeman on street traffic duty.

When they returned to the shop, she said, "'There it is now...there's that terrible smell again!

"Can't you smell it?"

"Smell it?" he exclaimed.

"Lady, I'm sittin' in it!"

I was talking about Heroes Season 1, which we are catching up on via HD-DVD.

I have watched (and never missed) Lost since Day 1, and I did (like MattH) recently review the Season 3 boxed set.  I have to say RLP that I actually loved Season 3 of Lost from the very beginning--I know a lot of people complained about it, but I found it riveting the whole time, as I detail in my review.

My review says the same; I loved almost everything about Season 3. I certainly enjoyed the 6 opening episodes that so many people disliked. I liked them when they first aired, and I LOVED them when I rewatched them realizing just exactly how much information we were getting about the Others in those episodes, very necessary since the Others play such a HUGE role in ALL of Season 3.

For those wondered what else the strike has caused:

'Justice League of America'

It could be a long time before Superman and Batman meet on the big screen. With no shooting script and options having expired on potential cast members (man, we would have liked to see Wonder Woman as played by the buxom Megan Gale, pictured), Warner Bros. has now put its ensemble superhero flick on hold.

'Shantaram'
Warner Bros. called off the February start date on this Mira Nair-directed flick, in which Johnny Depp was set to star as an Australian heroin addict who escapes prison, pretends to be a doctor in India and eventually fights against the Russians in Afghanistan. Busy guy.

'Angels and Demons'
Tom Hanks has plenty of time to grow his hair out to reprise his role as cryptographer Robert Langdon. Due to an unfinished script by Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman, the Ron Howard-directed prequel to 'The Da Vinci Code' has pushed its release date from Dec. 19, 2008, to May 15, 2009.

'Pinkville'
United Artists postponed Oliver Stone's historical drama about an army general (Bruce Willis) investigating the My Lai Massacre, citing Stone's penchant for script-tinkering during shooting. As a result, Willis dropped out, making the film another casualty of the writers' war.

'Nine'
Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Sophia Loren will have to wait to flaunt their singing and dancing skills. This Rob Marshall-directed musical, which had planned to start lensing in March, is another victim of an unfinished script.

'Fantastic Voyage'

'Independence Day' director Roland Emmerich's remake of the 1966 sci-fi classic had been planned as a summer 2009 event movie for Fox,but 'National Treasure' screenwriting duo Marianne and Cormac Wibberley were unable to finish the script before the strike.

Hello, all!

I'm several days behind, but the pro bono Safe Kids video is complete and so are the TLC spots which will run in Miss America this weekend.

I was in such a rush to get to my block captain meeting last night that I left my computer at my job. Fortunately, people were there at 8 working so I was able to pick up the computer on our way to the airport.

Pleasant flight, terrible cab driver, and now we're at our hotel.

Fascinating that a month and a half before the purported start date of Nine, they'd be doing script changes - the fact that most of the rest of the film remains uncast, should tell you that March was never in the cards.  Miramax has signed an interim deal with the WGA and therefore script work can continue, but I don't see that there's any start date in the near future.

Keith & I also thought the job, Michael Gross & his wife (don’t know the actresses name), would have been interesting & fun on a regular basis.  Maybe they really are moving to Oregon ;)

The wife was played by Kate Burton (Richard Burton's daughter).  She also played Ellis Grey, the mother of Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo) on "Grey's Anatomy."

MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY.

Danny is trying to impress some guests by playing some opera recordings.  He wants them to know he is up on culture.  The children are impressed.

Guests arrive, "Madame Butterfly" on LP playing softly in the background.  After a bit of conversation Danny says to his son:

"Russell, would you turn off the Puccini?"

Rusty Hamer:  "Sure.  Where is it?"

Gina (Annette Funicello) had a boyfriend in three episodes played by Dickie (Richard) Tyler - who had been in movies most famously playing the young boy that Ingrid Bergman taught to box in BELLS OF ST MARY'S.

He played a football player and was very into body building.  He spent many years as a chiropractor in the San Fernando Valley.

Sara Gazarek's second album, entitled RETURN TO YOU, which features what is now my favorite recording of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah."
I adored her first cd and wondered if the second studio recording would live up to the promise of the first - well, it did and it does!

She's been a friend of mine on myspace for quite some time, too.

And now for something completely different:  today, I refinanced my mortgage!  The new interest rate is 1.875% lower (it won't close for up to 60 days, but I've locked in the interest rate)!  Originally, I had a 30-year fixed rate mortgage, now have a 15-year fixed and comparing the two, I will save almost $130,000!!! :o And I will only pay about $200/month more!  But for half the length!!  I won't have to wait until I'm 70 to pay it off!!! ;D
