Well, you've read the notes, the notes had short paragraphs, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're out looking for their dictums.

Yes we're out here checking for the mistakes they're making!

(My errors are of course due to poor proof reading skills and undue haste)

I've been kind enough to leave the incorrect spelling of "niece" alone for years now!

Hello, Ben!

Well, I'm up because my radiator was particularly hissy last night.  Actually, even the one in the living room which is strangely quiet was letting off some steam.  So...

I have been checking my e-mail to see if anyone really indeed wants to stop by today before 9:00, as well as doing some work on my blog since there seemed to be some sort of stray formatting command which was messing things up.

BACON!

Can't wait to try it! I'm seeing a favorite client on Tuesday (I worked on the Safe Kids video for her husband) who is a big fan of bacon. She is even in the "Bacon of the month" club! So  we're going to break into it tomorrow and I will report back!

Apparently, it's selling well, but not selling out.  Yet. There are various discount codes out there: Playbill, TheatreMania, SeasonOfSavings.com, BroadwayBox.com, etc.

Roundabout only offers certain seats in certain sections at the discounted price, but some of them are certainly decent.  Also, remember that Roundabout's pricing changes after the show opens, so...

I watched the SAG awards last night (my first time).  I also watched the pre-show on E.

I'm curious, what channel are the SAG awards on in the US?  HEre they were on a very obscure channel (SunTv). And the pre-show was on our alternate Global which now carries some E! programming.

I actually liked the show and the pre-show. Probably because of missing the Golden Globes.

Ah i am just catching up on last night's posts and i see DR MattH answered one of my questions (the SAG awards were on TNT).

That explains why i've never seen it before since we don't get that station in Canada.

I'm still waiting to see this past season of THE CLOSER. :(

The station that has carried all other seasons is now mostly E!  I'm hoping that the W channel will start it soon (i think they finished the season before a couple of months ago).

Due to the State of the Union Address tonight, very little of interest (including the address) is on TV and almost nothing new. AMERICAN GLADIATORS has a new episode, I think.

I know Fox is repeating the pilot for THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES.

The major networks are all showing sitcoms at 10:30, but they're all rerun episodes, of course.

Today I'll finish BLACKOUT that I started last night. (I don't usually stop a movie in mid-screening, but this is an episodic drama, so I thought I could fudge on it this time).

Tonight during those 3 hours of prime time, I'll be watching a Comedy Central DVD featuring a bunch of standup comedians doing their stand-up routines uncensored. It's three hours, so tonight seems a perfect night to watch this.

By this point, Johnny Weir's outlandish costumes are a part of his presentation. They've always been garish, over-the-top, and eye-catching, exactly the intended effect, I suspect.

Good morning, all! No bugs last night, to my knowledge, but I still had the laundry going by 7:15 this morning.  I think the major hurdles are over, and everything to follow is preventative. I need to pick up a gallon of Steri-Fab, which is supposed to be the best pesticide for bedbugs and mop the floor and spray my luggage this week.  Today's goal is to seal the mattress in its new cover so I can begin sleeping on it again; I dn't want to replace it until I know the apartment is clean.

So goes my life: buggy and boring.  Pity.

I doubt that. It's in NBC's best interest to have the skaters come off to their best advantage. Ratings have been falling steadily for figure skating over the last decade, and I can see no advantage in making the skaters appear to be airheads or doofuses if they're trying to regain some popularity for the sport.

I thought Evan's win was okay....

The rivalry and bad blood that everyone keeps talking about seems to be as much about the commentators as the participants - trying to create some interest in this sport that is rapidly losing favor with Joe Q. Public.

The comments and video of Johnny Weir at the beginning of the show last night were particularly off putting to me:  things he said....as if he didn't LOVE having everyone talking about him and thinking about him....as if they do!  LOL

The interview with the two of them really showed more about them as people, I think.  Evan gave Johnny props for going through three competitions defending his title and Johnny was taken aback at the compliment.  But then they had nothing else to say and went back to the act....

Oh well.....

This weekend's National Figure Skating Championships were full of surprises and spectacular performances.  Especially fun was the Ladies' Free Skate in which Rachael Flatt, a chubby-cheeked chipmunk-like 15-year-old with "Ugly Betty" braces gave the outstanding performance of the night, outscoring her closest competitor (third-place finisher Ashley Wagner) by 5 points.

Winner Mirai Nagasu, IMO, was way overhyped/overscored as I did not experience any emotion from any part of her (third-place) free skate performance.  Flatt's music ("Romantic Rhapsody" by Andre Mathieu, choreographed by Lori Nichol) was quite beautiful and she skated with joy and graceful precision (hence winning the free skate portion).  It's a shame her short program score held her back from winning it all.

Also a shame was that Caroline Zhang fared poorly in the short program because her long program was among the best of the evening (she finished 4th in the free skate).  But she is 14, winner Mirai Nagasu is 14 and 2nd place finisher Rachael Flatt is 15, and none of them can go to World's...not this year.  Next year, Nagasu and Zhang may still be ineligible for World's....but that depends on when their birthdays fall (they can be within so many days of their 16th birthday and still qualify for World's).  I'm hoping Kimmie Meisner can find her muse.

I, too, think Johnny Weir was royally robbed, but I can understand how Evan Lysacek outscored him with his spins and footwork.  Weir's spins were a bit unimaginative and he didn't demonstrate much, if any, flexibility in them.  His footwork, while good, wasn't as difficult as Lysacek's.

That said, I wasn't terribly impressed by Lysacek's skate...from the music selection (so many women have skated to "Tosca" that I guess he thought a man's using it would be unique), to his costume to his "flailing-himself-about-the-rink" execution.  The choreography was a bit Debbie Allen-ish...slaggish, as it were.  I've thought so every time I've seen him skate the program (this was the third time).

Lysacek has this "goomba" aura that I find very annoying.  His costumes are always a bit "too goomba"... and that white satin blouse he wore (no doubt sewn for him by someone at Mr. Danny's Wedding Emporium) was NO exception.  I'm certain he affects "goomba-hood", given his self-expression, his operatic music choices and his ornate costumes that always make him seem a bit neckless and shorter than he is, and it all prevents him -- in my eyes -- from being world-class the way he "might" be otherwise.  Add the Michael-Weiss-preening-gene (i.e., "I'm-straight-and-don't-you-forget-it-'cause-I'm-not-gonna-let-you") and all the passion in the world will never make up for what he lacks that Weir possesses in spades.

All Weir needs to do to pass Lysacek is improve the difficulty of his spins and footwork.  I don't think Lysacek can better Weir's presentation and jumps.  And Weir's music was WON-der-ful (and composed/performed just for his program!!)  Great music, that isn't overdone-to-death, is a major plus.

And three cheers for the national ice dancing champions Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto for another brilliant performance in the free dance.  If they don't fall too far behind their world competitors in the first two dances, the free dance should seal the deal for the gold medal at World's.

That's my take on things.  Yes, der Brucer, I'd love to have the final edit on Weir's costume.  I think he can retain the glitz and still look more masculine.  What's the point of out diva-ing the ladies in the costume department?

Oh, and about the Truth Booth:  I rather liked it.  It's far more interesting than the standard pointing-the-microphone at the skater and asking the usual questions (how do you think you did, do you think you needed a triple-triple combination, should you have done a quad/should you have skipped the quad?, etc.  Isolated as they were, they got to speak about exactly what they were thinking at the moment.  It may not be what everyone wants to hear, but it beats the old interviews with the interviewer being predictable and flat.

So that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!

Actually....they do.  They're just not the people you talk to.

The skating world is a universe unto itself.  Weir generates tons of talk whether he's being cooperative or whether he's shying away.

Just because you were offput doesn't mean there aren't tens of thousands of folks out there relishing every moment.

True, DR RLP - but comments made to CREATE talk get tiresome, whomever is doing the talking, whether I listen to them or not.  One would think that talk about one's talent or skating programs, etc., would be more advantageous to a skater than talk about one's lifestyle.

DR JOSE - I think discussing the auditionees on your blog as you often do here, might be upsetting to some.......your blog is likely to become very popular in the trade....so discretion will out.

I will always err on the side of discretion.  However, the only thing I'm "legally" obliged to do is to leave out their real name when describing such events.  So, if I change the name and the song selection, well...  Hmm...

??? ??? ???

And, remember, I also discuss the amazingly talented people that come by my piano.

A friend said that when he saw BD in HERRINGBONE, BD looked even hunkier than he did in MULAN.

(You see, BD played a buffed-up cartoon character in MULAN and....oh, never mind)

I had to look this up on imdb, and found this character bio for the character BD played in Mulan, Shang:

WARNING:  MULAN SPOILER!!!

Quote
Captain Li Shang is a character from the Disney animated movie "Mulan". He is the captain of the army where Mulan enlists to fight the Huns.

When Mulan elists the army as a boy named Ping, Shang doesn't believe she is a great warrior. Mulan quickly proves him wrong, passing a series of tests and earning his respect. Him and Mulan quickly become friends. However, she is wounded in a battle with Shan Yu, and when the doctor is checking her up, he finds out who she really is. Since Mulan saved his life by burying Shan Yu in apile of snow, Shang decides to forgive her, but she is kicked out of the army. Later, Mulan sees that Shan Yu is still alive and is going to invade the village. But when she goes to warn everybody, no one believes her, sincetheir trust in her is shattered. Thus, Mulan teams up with Mushu and defeats Shan Yu. This proves to Shang how good and corageous Mulan is despite of her sex. At the end of the movie, he realizes that he is in love with Mulan, and they become boyfriends.

No, really, that's what's written there!  I just added the bold type, that's all.

For example, I've been going through Bobby Flay Cooks American, part of the latest round from Jessica's Biscuit (http://www.ecookbooks.com/p-1994-bobby-flay-cooks-american.aspx), and found this tasty variant on smashed potatoes:

Place a stick of slightly softened, unsalted butter in a food processor, along with six chopped cloves of garlic and a half cup of chopped soft herbs.  (Any mix of soft herbs, such as mint, parsley, chives, tarragon, and cilantro will work - go for a balance that will match the main dish.)  Blend until smooth, season with salt and pepper, and refrigerate until everything else is ready.

(OK, I know - why use unsalted butter if you're going to use salt, right?  Because if you use salted butter you don't have any control over the amount of salt you're using!)

Peel and cut into chunks five pounds of Yukon Gold taters, put into a large saucepan, add enough cold water to cover, and a couple of tablespoons of salt.  Bring to a boil, and let cook for 10 to 12 minutes, until soft.  Drain well, and put the pan (and taters) back over low heat.

Add 1 cup heavy cream plus 1 cup milk and the green garlic butter, and mash until smooth.  Salt and pepper to taste.

Serves eight.

I'm not a big sweet potato fan, but Flay has me interested with this one:

Lemon-Glazed Sweet Potatoes

In a small non-reactive pan, combine two cups lemon juice with two cups granulated sugar and one tablespoon finely chopped lemon zest.  Bring to a boil, and let reduce down to 1/2 cup.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Peel five large sweet potatoes, cut them into 1/2 inch dice, and toss them in a couple of tablespoons olive oil in a large oven-proof skillet.  Roast the potatoes in the oven for about twenty to twenty-five minutes, until lightly browned and just cooked through.

Move the pan to the stove top, on medium heat, and pour the glaze over the potatoes and cook, tossing often, until soft and glazed.

Or, how about Melted Napa Cabbage:

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Thinly slice two pounds Napa cabbage, put in a roasting pan, and add one cup red wine vinegar, plus two tablespoons honey and two cups chicken stock.  Season with salt and pepper, cover with foil, and bake for about 30 minutes or until the cabbage is wilted.

Remove from the oven and stir in 2 tablespoons thinly sliced fresh mint.  Serve with a slotted spoon if the cabbage is very wet.

Serves four.

I had a hankering to see Boitano's gold medal winning free skate from 1988 - and then realized that it can probably be found on YouTube.  :D

I'm at work now, but will check that out later when I get home.

If not, I have it on videotape here.

I began my afternoon by finishing BLACKOUT which I had started last night. Though the liner notes said the movie was 95 mintes long, it was actually only 82 minutes long, so I could have finished it yesterday with no effort.

Anyway, it was an OK movie. The writing didn't really explore any of the characters in great depth (and some of them were worthy of a more thorough exploration), and after the one bad night of looting, the power came back on 24 hours after it went out, just as tempers were rising to a fever pitch. So a bit anticlimactic after such a build-up.

The disc also had a bunch of special features including 5 deleted scenes (a couple were just scene extensions with most of the scene in the finished movie), a Meet the Cast section (helpful since I didn't have a cast list to place actor with role easily), some behind the scenes featurettes, and an interview with the director.

One of the last things (or, actually, the last thing) MBarnum posted was that he loved "Hollywood and the Stars" and the theme music from same.

I've been wanting to tell him that there exists   a recording (http://www.amazon.com/Elmer-Bernstein-Royal-Philharmonic-Orchestra/dp/B0000034ST/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1201554861&sr=1-2) by the composer, Elmer Bernstein with the RPO Pops, that has a really wonderful rendition of the "Hollywood and the Stars" theme.  The entire recording is "mixed" for me, as I think Bernstein took some of his tempi too slowly, but that particular track is the highlight of the album for me and makes it worth the price just to have it.

I completed my afternoon watching MURDER MOST FOUL. Hadn't watched it on the new TV. I have to give Warners props for transferring the four Rutherford/Marple movies with excellent results. The B&W is rich with beautiful contrast and superb sharpness, and the anamorphic transfers really are well done without a lot of distracting aliasing on parallel line structures.

It snowed overnight in western Washington.  It was so sunny and bright this morning that I had to wear my sunglasses while driving to work.  Throughout the day, it became overcast, then it started to rain a bit, then snow, then sunny again, then overcast again then more snow then just overcast and now, it's dark.

I have been off in another window, writing some purple prose about that conference I've been planning.  My writing won't win any Pulitzer Prizes, but at least it's DONE!

Now, will the newsletter editor be able to open the attachments?

DR Jane - Did you give Bryan my phone number just in case he needs a restaurant recommendation or two?  -And if he's going to be around the Apollo Theater, I can also recommend two real good soul food buffets, and a decent fish-fry shop.  :)

Thank you all for the vibes and good wishes.  I seem to say that a lot lately.  I am feeling very depressed about all of it, which is really silly in the grand scheme of things.  They gave me this booklet to read all about the treatment and the precautions, etc.

It seems that is possible that I may always have it; or, possibly be a carrier.  My doctor and I are going to spend some time at my Thursday appointment discussing everything!

...And I now have a pork shoulder roast sitting in the fridge getting all tasty.  I popped a couple cloves of garlic, a good handful of cilantro, a generous spoonful of kosher salt, a couple grinds of pepper, a good dash of hot red chili flakes, some oregano, and some cumin into my mini-food processor... Pulsed it a few times... Then drizzled in a healthy amount of olive oil while pulsing a few more times....  I scored the pork shoulder... Rubbed the mojo all over, making sure to get into all the nooks and crannies... Put in a big ziploc bag... Poured some fresh squeezed lime and naranja (bitter orange juice) over it... And will let it sit overnight... Possibly two overnights.  Then I just need to pop it in the oven for a couple of hours... And...  :)

I'm just trying to decided if I want to make my own tostones or just buy them from the walk-up counter up the street.  Hmm...

Ron, you will be pleased to know I won't be narrating Bryan's flight to NY. ;)  At least not if it has arrived by the time I wake up in the morning.  Jet Blue doesn't arrive until 8:00AM.

Let me get this straight.  Are you telling me that you are actually going to be able to SLEEP while Bryan is in flight?

Back with printer cartridge.  I was trying to make an LP transfer with my ION turntable - it goes along fine for awhile, then I start getting some kind of electrical noise, as if a chord is loose.  I checked the USB chord (Ab/Bb), replugged and still happened.  Maybe I'll try another USB cord.

This is a clip of the Gold Medal performance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwcqJbSgRmM&feature=related) at the 1980 World Championships.  I thought this Hungarian pair (Regoczy & Sallay) totally marvelous.  That event was also the first time I "remember" seeing Torvill and Dean skate (I believe they finished fourth that year).  IIRC, the rink was outdoors.

Jose, thank you for your offer.  I mentioned to Bryan I had a list of food places to eat & he reminded me he is on a tight budget, as is his girlfriend.  I expect they will cook most of their means.  He also has numerous friends, & a cousin, to visit.  Maybe they will treat him.

I think he might eat at the school, however, do you know a good vegetarian restaurant near the Apollo?

Thank you on behalf of my DH, Jane, Kerry, Dakota, George and anyone else I missed.

We celebrated Greg's birthday by getting my old car running and then going to a neighborhood meeting. We had a nice dinner afterwards, though!

Now I must prep my material for work tomorrow. Some of the shows I got are pretty weird, and the one I wanted to do (The Singing Office) went to someone else. Then again, it may end up with me after all, the way this company works! They seem to assign things randomly and not based on our strengths/weaknesses. (Not that I have any, LOL!)

Next, I watched three hours of stand-up comedy featuring what Comedy Central considered the eight best stand-up specials over the last ten years or so. They were all very funny (some a little more than others, but they all made me laugh).

The DVD is labeled "uncensored" so I was expecting something raunchy, but apart from the "F-word" two or three times and "the finger" in one person's set, nothing even remotely tasteless or censorable.
Title: Re:WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO MY DICTUM?
Post by: Matt H. on January 28, 2008, 08:07:36 PM
The DVD also featured as a bonus four "comedy quickies" as they called them: 2 minute excerpts from four Comedy Central shows: THE COLBERT REPORT (hilarious), LIL' BUSH (OK), SARAH SILVERMAN (not funny), and SOUTH PARK (typical).

I watched Richard Lester's film version of Terrance McNally's THE RITZ.  I still like the film a lot.  I adore Treat Williams in it.  Kaye Ballard makes the most of what she is given, but the three top-billed stars are perfect:  Jack Weston, Rita Moreno and Jerry Stiller.   It's a very brief film, too.  The dvd transfer is quite good.

Which DR knows the connection between Andrew Lloyd Webber's EVITA and THE RITZ (the movie)?

TOD caulifower

First you steams your cauliflower so it is nice and tender.   Take a glass pie pan and coat with butter, take the steamed cauliflower and put in a bowl with the remanidner of the stiock of butter  and mix it around til all the butters melted,  Season witha littel pepeer and salt.  Take 4/5 of a quart of sour cream and mix into the caulflower.

Turn the whole caulflower mixture into the pie pan and  "frost" with the  rest of the sourcream.  Sprinkle the top with seasoned breadcrumbs

Put in the oven at 375 til top is brown and bubbly about 25 - 30 minutes

especially good with roast beef

Not a low cholesterol/fat food
