Well, you've read the notes, the notes had wind, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently dealing with their own wind.

Titanic [not a great film, but again, the "world" is scrupulously rendered]

TOD: Would ZULU count? Two cultures at war, yet at the end the Zulu warriors pay tribute to the few surviving brits. My uncle was a missionary in Soth Africa, pre and during apartheid, and he spent many years in Zulu villages; I've always wanted to travel there. Also i recenlty was flipping thru Michael Caine's autobio and he mentioned that there was an incident on set when an Afrikaner foreman treated one of the black workers in the 'usual' way; He soon got the message that he'd better not do that again, but the uk crew was closely watched during the whole filming.

Very mild temperatures this morning which really surprised me, and it's warming into the 60s today, not something predicted a few days ago. I'm delighted. Looks like a very nice day in the making.

A Criterion DVD I reviewed a few weeks ago - THE NAKED PREY directed and starring Cornel Wilde - certainly fits the topic. A very entertaining film.

I also really enjoyed the deluxe melodrama THE EDGE with Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin some years ago.

Today's mail will determine what I watch today. I'm just not ready to dive back into another TV box set (BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Season 3 is next).

On Disney Blu-ray I'm expecting CRIMSON TIDE and BECOMING JANE, both of which come out next week, but Disney is sometimes later than they need to be in getting review copies out.

If those don't in the mail today, I'll probably watch MARTIAN CHILD which came in yesterday. It doesn't get released until February 12th, but I can go ahead and get it out of the way.

Good morning, all! Another bugless night.   This morning, I did a ton of laundry and then I stopped to pick up the Ster-Fab. This afternoon, I'll begin mopping the floors with it and hopefully kill off anything moping about.

I'm working on my letter to the landlord and the mass panic coming from apartments 3D and 3E about possible bugs is stressing everyone out.  I got home yesterday to a phone call from Jaymie in 3E about calling the landlord for the exterminator to return, and bitching about the piano infesting the building (I swear the only person who saw bugs in the elevator was the lady in 3D since I didn't see any when I vacuumed the elevator immediately after her claims). This morning the man in 2D told me the lady from 3D was down yesterday yelling about him not letting the exterminator in because the poison would kill her cats and he was pissed that I'd told her he had a sofa infested with bedbugs.  It's another witch hunt, I tell you.

Last night I finished watching THE PICKWICK PAPERS, which was a wonderful BBC production filled with 3 hours of silliness and good humor leading to a very emotional and sobering stay in the Fleet Prison before everything reached its happy conclusion.  i've never read the novel, but I thoroughly enjoyed the production and a wonderful cast.

As for the Topic of the Day...

The first one that pops into my head is that "Grand Canyon" short that Walt Disney released.  It's the one that uses Ferde Grofé's "Grand Canyon Suite".  When I was in grade school, we watched this every year, and it always fascinated me.  And since I have yet to see the Grand Canyon up close, it's still "another world" to me.

He does not, but given all the plots going on in the BBC adaptation, the musical version must have been greatly simplified to add a lot of music to a 2.5 hour show!

I just put this on our NetFlix queue.

We never finished watching MANSFIELD PARK last night.  The quality of the film began to deteriorate & become progressively worse until we finally turned it off.  I can’t say I was disappointed.  I found the speed of which the plot progressed even more frenzied than PERSUASIAN & less tolerable.

Fanny Price cannot be an easy character to capture on film while maintaining her position as the heroine.  Has this been accomplished & any recommendations on which version to watch?

So this African-American gospel group that we sang with at services this past Sunday was selling CDs, and I bought some.

I put the first one into my car's CD player on my way to work this morning.  This particular recording contains a very prominent, very enthusiastic tenor as a member of the ensemble who is unfortunately about a half-step flat.  Consistently.

I always thought Joan Collins was/is a lot better than most give her credit for.

She can be effective in certain things, but she was WAY out of her depth in THE VIRGIN QUEEN. Everyone acted circles around her, and she was a most unconvincing Elizabethan.

Since the Disney Blu-rays were not forthcoming, I watched MARTIAN CHILD this afternoon. It's a lovely family film with John Cusak playing a widower who adopts a very unusual child (bright but emotionally damaged) who truly believes he's a Martian. A fairly stock ending, but otherwise, it doesn't take the easy road to audience acceptance, and I really enjoyed it. Teared up a couple of times during the movie. Some good payoffs in the writing.

There are a nice selection of bonus features on the disc, and I began with the deleted/extended scenes. There are 14 of them, none truly necessary to the film (wisely cut), but all gave a little added perspective to the characters so I'm glad they're on the disc.

Almost finished with On The Town, then shall have to skeedaddle.  It really does take awhile doing these transfers - first in real time, then cleaning the noise between tracks, then putting the IDs in, then exporting, then importing into iTunes, then burning a CD.  Whew!  I think when I finish the three pages when I get back, I'll do a few more this evening instead of watching a DVD.

We had the meeting at the aquarium today for Safe Kids. I had never been inside of it before---I had only been outside to buy tickets for various friends and family as presents. We only had access to two huge tanks but it was delightful. The big tank had lots of sharks, including whale sharks, along with skates, rays, etc.

The tank in the hall where the ceremony and breakfast was held had several beluga whales. (2 belugas had died soon after the place opened.)

The video was a big hit---lots of tearful and happy people!

The cookies don't get to me untilthe 1st week of March so you can send a check to me whenever is convenient .  I'll pay the troop for them when I get them and send them on to you!!

OR if you want the tax deduction (I assume part of it is tax deductible but you of course would know best) you can write your check directly to Girl Scouts of Suffolk County and just be sure I have it by March 1

DR Jose, my bacon loving friend didn't accompany her husband to the aquarium today. (We were in the thanks section of the program and the head of Safe Kids also thanked Matt and his "team". We got a big laugh out of that, and thereafter he referred to me as "team". "Hey, team, want some more coffee?" etc...

So my DH and I sampled it, and it is quite interesting. Not something I would buy on a regular basis, but it's certainly fun to try it and share with others!

I had a full evening of viewing tonight.

I began by watching all of the bonus features on the MARTIAN CHILD DVD and listening to the audio commentary. Commentary had four participants, but it was OK. Both behind-the-scene featurettes were very well done. The first was about the child playing the child in the film. Got to meet his stage parents who seem to have their heads about them and their feet planted firmly on the ground.

The second feature was the real-life author who wrote the original short novel and who adopted a foster child himself who was also on camera, the film a semi-autobiographical account of his own life. They were a wonderful father-son combination.

BTW, this writer penned the original "Trouble With Tribbles" STAR TREK episode.

HOUSE had a interesting case, but I have to admit I've grown very tired of all the mind games with the team. It's so tiresome now with everyone guessing and second-guessing one another.

And they still haven't figured out a way to use Jennifer Morrison and Jesse Spencer within the new mix of cast members. They're just going to waste.

At 10, I decided to take a laserdisc out and watch it. I chose ERASER (which I have never gotten on DVD). I watched the first hour of the film. Outrageous and totally over-the-top action film, but Vanessa Williams is certainly pretty, and John Slattery's hair hasn't gone totally gray yet.

I'll watch the second hour of it tomorrow as I cook and eat lunch.

BK, ye of all recorded (literally) knowledge--do you know if there's any diff between the just announced SAE/Intrada "Mary, Queen of Scots" and the Artemis import (that also had the Delerue side of the "Anne of the 1000 Days" soundtrack LP) from years ago?  Their PR says it's the CD premiere of the score, which the CD already in my hand seems to belie.  Inquiring minds....

The Artemis is basically a bootlet - legal in Europe because of their copyright laws, but taken off vinyl.  The new release will be right off the album masters and will be much better.

I'm quite pooped myself, but I'll be up for another two-and-a-half hours.  I'm waiting until eleven to print out pages, just to make sure I'm happy - or I even may wait until morning.  I'm finishing up another LP transfer (Claus Ogerman's instrumental version of Zorba coupled with Teddy Wilson's Gypsy In Jazz.

Between the dark and the daylight,
When the night is beginning to lower,
Comes a pause in the day's occupations,
That is known as the Wussberger's Hour.

Only the great poets can get away with rhyming "lower" and "hour".

You should have gone for using "glower" which rhymes with "hour."

That's -15 points for bad rhyming.  Maybe the greats CAN get away with it, but they don't post here!

I watched "The Biggest Loser" tonight....some big shakeups  in the "couples" format with all individual teams being split into a blue or black team.  Bob won a challenge against Gillian and got to pick his three couples first.  He took the three teams that have lost the most weight, and he forsook a team that he had been training since the first day.  They were very hurt.

Still, it's a game and they got Gillian and she's nothing to sneeze at  as trainers go...she just makes folks work harder, and that's what all the people she got need to do.

I recorded a PBS show on Herculaneum.  I've been to that site  several times and I'm always fascinated by new  shows that reveal the newest finds.  The site has only been marginally excavated and new things will be revealed in  many years to  come.

That's okay.  I didn't have a single "Ooh! Ooh" in me.

And I didn't want to fudge around with code to make the page numbers big and beauteous.

I'm guessing DR François will  be returning to "the fold" soon, as his January holiday will be ending this week (if I haven't misunderstood  that's why he's been E&T).

I think it's time for bed.

But before I go....TomovOz, our local PBS station (KQED) aired a beautiful episode of "Nature" (in high definition) Sunday evening called "The Colorful Parrots of Oz".  It was a co-production of KNET New York with the Australian Broadcasting System.

It's rather recent (2006, I think), and it was narrated by F. Murray Abraham.  The show covered the continent and offered spectacular footage of the varieties of parrots, their distinctive colorings, diets, mating rituals, etc., in different parts of Australia.  Part of the proceedings showed what happened in the channel region (district?) after the seasonal rains fall and tens of thousands of parrots frantically begin their breeding along the banks of channels that are filled with water after the rains.

What was particularly fun was that thanks to you and Colin, I was familiar with many of the names of the varieties of parrots I saw.

What a paradise Australia is.

One of my very favorite spots to visit.

I am always amazed by how far advanced Roman engineering had progressed - municipal water supplies, indoor plumbing, heated baths...

The Greeks were such great thinkers, but the Romans were the doers!

Just think - brain surgury in ancient Egypt, a working steam engine in Alexander's court, accurate measurements of the circumference of the earth and the distance to the moon - then war and turmoil - and a thousand years of Dark Ages until man began to regain the learning!

I have the London cast recording and enjoyed that.  I had no idea that I would like it as much as I did. :)
