Last night, I watched the season 3 finale of "Lost."  I also watched it as it was being recorded on my DVR, so I could rewind it anytime I missed something, which happened several times.  It was great to get the little tidbits of info throughout the show. :) I can't wait for tonight's recap and the NEW EPISODE!! :D

If this question was asked before the holidays I would have had different responses but now since we have a new toy (the USB turntable) I don't have to worry so much. Yes, it would be great to see the vinyl pressed professionally but since we can do it ourselves with good results I'll be happy.

I will transfer the soundtrack of A Little Night Music to CD (yes, I know it's not a "stellar" recording but it's Sondheim).

I will transfer the 1964 Jerry Orbach The Cradle Will Rock to CD. This recording was my first exposure to the show. I do have the 1985 Acting Company recording (with Miss LuPone) but I prefer this one. It also has Miss Nancy Andrews, she of Little Me!

I will transfer both albums by a lesser-know gay tight harmony musical group from the 70s, called Gotham. I have both the albums they released. One is lots of fun, simply titeld Gotham. The other one is not so good. It's called Void Where Inhibited.

If I may comment on last night's Mac vs. PC discussion:

We've been an Apple household from the very beginning - starting with an Apple 2E, graduating to a Mac 512K, and now we have an iMac (Richard's desktop), an eMac (my desktop), and an iBook (our shared portable).

When I started working here at Dayton Metro Library 10 years ago, I was nervous about adapting to a PC environment.  However, that was right when the Library was converting to Windows and my co-workers were having fits with it.  My Mac background helped a lot, because as Richard says, "Windows was Microsoft's attempt to make PCs as easy to use as Macs already had been for 10 years."

Title: Re:THE THREEPENNY NOTES
Post by: Ben on January 31, 2008, 06:27:57 AM
Sunday on Wednesday was quite wonderful. I still love the original production more but the piece is so beautiful and moving that it would be hard to muck it up too much. The visuals of the painting were great and Daniel Evan's transformation from Act I to Act II was marvelous. Strangely enough, even though Jenna Russell made the role her own, there were times when I heard Bernadette Peters voice coming through. Odd but perhaps it's because I know the OBC recording so well.

TOD:

I also am planning to transfer the soundtrack of A Little Night Music from LP.

I'd also like to transfer my three "Starland Vocal Band" albums.  Most people know them only for "Afternoon Delight," but for fans of vocal harmony they did some really imaginative arrangements.

I have no problem with Macs. I know that some people (not here) are either one or the other. If you like PCs you're an idiot (I have a friend like that and we cannot discuss computers because he won't shut the f**k up about it), if you like MACs you're in a cult. That's not the issue. For me it's the investment I already have in PC programs. I know you can run Windows on a MAC but, and there isn't much room for argument here, MACs (hardware and programs) are routinely more expensive and the deal I got on my Dell was too good to pass up. I began with computers before PCs, Microsoft or Apple and as I began to work in office environments they all had PCs, not Apple so I'm more comfortable and familiar with the Dark Side. I do think Microsoft has it's royal head up it's a** sometimes (many times actually) but I'm happy with my choice and my work.  :)

Yeah, DR Ben, I don't "get" the Mac vs. PC war either.  I like being "bilingual," using my Macs at home and my PC here at work.  The folks who really frustrate me (many of our library patrons) are the ones who refuse to learn to use any computer.  I want to say, "Duh, it's the 21st century!"

Off to the United Way - bye for now.

Good morning, all! I really miss having the computer at home.  Soon, I hope.

Yesterday UPS delivered $130 worth of under-bed storage bins from Target: 4 of the six were broken and unusable.  My telephone call to Target over the situation was not an amusing one.  I was looking forward to their delivery since I need to get some clothing out of plastic bags and back into use.

I'm now down to laundry every other day, so I arrived at Toyland around 8am this morning, and I've been working on the Lady of the Slipper notes. This afternoon, I believe for a needed laugh I will attend the 5:25 showing of MEET THE SPARTANS, a film I would think dear to DR MBarnum's heart: all the boys appear to be wearing leather G-strings.  I'm sure it will mindless and stupid and I'm totally in the mood for that.

Speaking of DR MBarnum, welcome back, Goofball.

Laura - A song?  we can do a whole show about the life of the religious stripper Miss Gypsy Rosary.

Strip!
Our dear pastor was so boring today
Strip!
Does he know his congregation's part-gay?

Strip!
We all read the King James bible last night
Strip!
And I think that James just wasn't too bright

I believe in sex that's safer
I would like another wafer
Strip!
I am so religious

I would like some eggs for Easter
They can roll 'em on my keyster
Strip!
I'm not superstitious

I've talked about it ad nauseum here, but I'd first transfer STARS OF THE SILVER SCREEN 1929-1930. I finally wised up and transfered it to audio tape because the LP was sounding so scratchy now that it's in danger of being unlistenable.

I'd transfer the soundtrack to PORGY AND BESS which is the version I always listen to when I'm in a P&B mood.

I'd transfer the Mary Martin/HELLO DOLLY!

bk, this notice was posted over at the listserv.  Interested in being on a DVD?

>>>We are looking for people that could talk to us on-camera about the 20th Century Fox Marquee Musicals of the 1930s through 1960s.  We are producing a short documentary that will cover the musicals produced by Fox during this time period, how they were important to the studio, and how they were culturally significant.  We will also touch upon the 1952 film "Stars and Stripes Forever" and how it fit into the Fox musical canon.  The documentary will be a special feature on the DVD release for "Stars and Stripes Forever." <<<

Nah, just clearing out some shelf space, and finally "letting go" of a bunch of things I bought just because I thought I wanted them.  Well, a bunch of those things have been sitting on the shelf and/or in boxes still wrapped in their shrink-wrap for a year or two - or three.  So...

As for the Topic of the Day...

The only thing that comes to mind right now is the OCR of Nerfertiti.  Not really a "worthy" contender for a CD transfer, but I think my LP is slightly warped.

OH! - And Andras Schiff's recording of Ginastera's First Piano Sonata - which was coupled with Bach's "Goldberg Variations" on double-LP release.  A truly interesting coupling.  -At least I think I remember checking that set out of the library when I was in high school.

DR Ben - Ah, Gotham!  My dear, dearly departed friend, Mark, was a major fan of theirs.  And, I even think he used to work with them in some sort of capacity whenever they would gig in DC.  He also had his own vocal group in DC, and they would use some of Gotham's arrangements.  :)

DR singdaw - Ah, the Starland Vocal Band!  They were basically the house band at Eskimo Nell's in Arlington, VA.  (Alas, Eskimo Nell's had a fire a couple of years ago, and, was eventually torn down to make room for all the development in that part of Arlington (Ballston).)  Eskimo Nell's was a bar, but since they did feature music acts, they did allow all ages in during the week and during dinner hours.

Remember their TV special?

Hmmmm....I will need to cross the street today and pick up the Oregonian...we only have the Statesman Journal Newspaper at our office. But very likely it is the family that Jason helped. The foundation is running out of money, so I am hoping there will be some news publicity soon!

The "Concerto for Coloratura Soprano" is by Reinhold Gleire.

I agree with both of these choices! :) Other recordings already mentioned (and I own all of these albums...including the two above):

Man With a Load of Mischief (original off-Broadway cast)
Nerfertiti
Philemon

What was NOT good was the traffic getting there - I do not know what's happened to Coldwater Canyon in the last year, but it's totally out of control.  I sat on Ventura waiting to turn left for twenty minutes (traffic cops now tell you when you can go and can't go).  Once on Coldwater the traffic was literally at a standstill with no movement for about five minutes, then we began inching our way up the hill - it took another fifteen minutes to reach Mulholland.  By that time it was eight-thirty so I called the guy's assistant and told him I'd get there just as soon as I could.  Coming down the hill was easier and I got there about twenty minutes late.  And when I came home, there was no traffic coming back, but I could see that the opposite side going up Coldwater was STILL backed all the way to Ventura Blvd. and this at ten-twenty in the morning.  Madness.

I'd second THE LAST SWEET DAYS OF ISAAC, one of the strangest musicals I've ever seen, and add Al Carmines' IN CIRCLES.

A dear family friend (Barbara Rosenblat, who was in the original cast of Secret Garden and far too few other Broadway shows) was in a production of In Circles directed by Carmines. Odd show, but I'm glad I got a chance to see it.

TOD: There's a George Feyer LP called "Heavenly Echoes of My Fair Lady" wherein he imagines songs from the show in the style of different classic composers; my copy has an unfortunate scratch, and I'd love to hear it in its full glory again.

I think a lively debate and/or scuffle between you and Dr. Drew Casper would be worth the price of the DVD extras.

Although I did get MARGOT AT THE WEDDING from Paramount this afternoon (not due until February 19th), I went ahead with my original plans and began the third and last season of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.

The season premiere was actually a two-part episode. By the end of it, Linda Hamilton's character has given birth (child is stolen) and then Linda dies. No wonder the show didn't run past this season. Without that sexual attraction between the two characters, where's the show? It will be interesting tosee where they go with this for the remaining episodes.

I'm also a little bit bummed out by the televsion schedule tonight. My local CW affiliate is showing the Duke basketball game tonight beginning at 9, so SUPERNATURAL is being delayed until 12:35. That part I could take since I'll have the DVR pick it up. I wasn't going to be able to watch it today anyway. However, the recording the affiliate will make will not be in HD. SUPERNATURAL is SO much better in HD than SD. Sure, I can stand it for once, but it is disappointing. In another year, there won't be any more of these analog broadcasts so that won't be a worry any more.

Der  Brucer, There is no reason for this family to change how they prefer to dress just to please small minded people.

No, not if they don't mind the goodly number of small minded people making life uncomfortable for them.

I must admit that if I saw a women in a burka, the first thought that would enter my mind would be "Islamic Terrorist". And I would support my local school board if they chose to ban people wearing burkas from school grounds; and, I would support my local community if they chose to ban people wearing burkas from entering public buildings.

Back from a nice breakfast meeting with an interesting fellow - he's a film producer, but also heads up a charity organization (with various offshoots) called the Starlight Foundation.  Someone recommended me as the go-to guy to handle the entertainment portion of his fundraiser gala in June.  Since it seems like a fairly straightforward thing and since I love kids, I've agreed to do it.

Not to any wussy-poo who presumes only "hicks" like football.

I would have enjoyed college football a lot more if I wasn't required to parade through miles of slushy streets in the freezing cold to amuse our patrons (the taxpayers). I confess, I really did get into the whole pep-rally madness that surrounded every week before a game. During Plebe (freshman) year, special favors were bestowed upon the room that had the best Go Navy poster on their door and I used to go all-out to compete (wonderful things you can learn to do with glue and glitter and minature lights).

A dear family friend (Barbara Rosenblat, who was in the original cast of Secret Garden and far too few other Broadway shows) was in a production of In Circles directed by Carmines. Odd show, but I'm glad I got a chance to see it.

Is that the same Barbara Rosenblat who is an audiobook reader?  She is very, very popular among listeners.

The very one and the same!  And she was on the first recording of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty's Lucky $tiff (http://www.amazon.com/Lucky-Stiff-1993-Original-Members/dp/B0000014TX/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1201820235&sr=1-1), recorded by our very own BK!

ANDREW SULLIVAN (http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/01/a-baptist-churc.html)

Quote
A Baptist Church's Mass Outing
30 Jan 2008

For all Obama's inclusive words, some members of some churches are not exactly following through:

"I will be leaving the choir at the top of the year because 80 percent of the tenors are homosexuals and act more like a female in choir rehearsal than I do," the church choir member said in one of her e-mails to Bishop Alfred Owens Jr., the church pastor.

The e-mail, sent in December, identifies about 45 fellow church members as gay. She sent a second e-mail to Owens on Jan. 2 identifying another 62 church members as gay.

"The following people I am asking you to monitor very closely and my prayer is that you will sit them down from their ministries," she told Owens in the December e-mail. "Because they are ushering in the presence of sin, lies, a spirit of homosexuality and sexual spirits."

If all gay choir-members were removed, a great silence would fill Sunday morning in America.

LOL DR Laura.  Mine lasted longer than most so I consider shorter deliveries to be a breeze.

With Bryan my contractions began as we were driving to a gathering to welcome his cousin home from Vietnam.  We decided I would signal Keith & he would time them, without mentioning it to anyone.  While this is going on a woman there was telling me about the contractions her daughter had just experienced during a recent delivery.  Darn, I'm sitting there listening to the story & realizing the baby would have been born during the length of the party.  Four and a half days later, we had a baby.

I just watched the 2 hour finale.  And wow that was quite interesting how they did it.

I think it made it much more useful for regular viewers. And i think it would have helped newer viewers a lot too.

(They had captions at the bottom of the screen telling us what everything meant, who everyone was).

I really enjoyed it. The only thing is it was quite distracting having to read that much. I really had no idea there would be that many captions.

LOL DR Laura.  Mine lasted longer than most so I consider shorter deliveries to be a breeze.

I think they go better each time.

First time - 2 days of long walks with contractions, 12 hours pacing halls in the hospital - finally went home for some sleep and was awaken the next day with a call from the Doctor. (Actually my Mother-in-law took the call, and the Dr. refused to give her any status and insisted on talking with me - so she had to wake me up!)

Second time - 6 hours of waiting room magazine reading.

Third time - trip to the hospital when were were sent home because it was "too soon".

Four hours later wife insisted we go back NOW!

Left wife at the admission station and returned to my car to get my "Delivery Kit" (Books, thermos, snacks). Back in the waiting room I was looking for a good seat when a Doctor came in and asked me if I wanted to see my son!

A shame.  My nephew was born in a nice, regular, room at the hospital.  Anyone the parents wanted in was fine, until they became concerned about complications.  Of course the father was still permitted, and her mother was allowed to stay.  She was scared & wanted her mother there, who kept leaving briefly to report the progress to the rest of the family in the waiting room.

What a sweetie you are Vixmom,

Well, the foundation is running very low on funds...so donations of dollars and cents are very welcome and much needed right now! Until we can get the two heads of households decent jobs the foundation is paying rent, medical bills, etc for them, in addition to saving up for the next family that they are trying to get out of Jordan. There is a handy link for making monetary donations.

And sending good vibes to the families and to Jason are always welcome too! It's gotta be tough being a guardsman as well as working 40 hours a week, trying to have a home life with his family, and running this foundation! I certainly have to hand it to him.

Here is the website:

http://www.cponefoundation.org/ (http://www.cponefoundation.org/)

And if you e-mail Jason, be sure to use the e-mail address link rather then the "form"...I don't thiknk the form is working as he never got my message that I sent that way.

I just received an email from Amy Kotsonis,Assistant Conductor of The Young People's Chorus of New York City about the "honor" choir that the Vixter is takingpartin this Saturday

It said, in part:

"The young Women’s and Men’s Honor Choruses  will collaborate with composer Tom Cabaniss and guest choirs – the Newark Boys Chorus, “Hearsay,”an a cappella group from Cornell University, and “Mass Transit,” an a cappella group from NYU.  We will also have guest artists the InterSchool Orchestra of New York City Symphonic Band performing with the choruses.

At the end of the day, all participants will celebrate their accomplishments in a performance at 7:30 PM at the Church of St. Paul located at 113 E. 117th Street between Park and Lexington Avenue."

Family and friends are encouraged to join us for this concert and donations will be taken at the door. The doors open at 7:15 PM, concert 7:30 PM -9:30 PM.

I wonder if any of our NYC DR's are familar with any of the people or groups mentioned

ASSOCIATED PRESS (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,327386,00.html)

Quote
CABLE COMPANY BILLS TORNADO VICTIM $2,000 FOR DAMAGED EQUIPMENT

WHEATLAND, Wis. —  Having a tornado demolish her home was bad enough. But when Ann Beam received a $2,000 cable bill a few weeks later, she was floored. "I just couldn't believe it," Beam said. "I was like, 'What are they thinking?'"

Time Warner Cable billed a number of Wheatland residents for equipment destroyed in the Jan. 7 twister that struck the southeast corner of the state. Beam's bill covered five cable boxes and five remote controls.
She immediately called the cable company, but a man who identified himself as a manager said there was nothing the company could do.

Soinds like she got some of Elmoore's "luck".

The night sets softly
With the hush of falling leaves,
Casting shivering shadows
On the houses through the trees,
And the light from a street lamp
Paints a pattern on my wall,
Like the pieces of a puzzle
Or a child's uneven scrawl.

Up a narrow flight of stairs
In a narrow little room,
As I lie upon my bed
In the early evening gloom.
Impaled on my wall
My eyes can dimly see
The pattern of my life
And the puzzle that is me.

From the moment of my birth
To the instant of my death,
There are patterns I must follow
Just as I must breathe each breath.
Like a rat in a maze
The path before me lies,
And the pattern never alters
Until the rat dies.

And the pattern still remains
On the wall where darkness fell,
And it's fitting that it should,
For in darkness I mst dwell.
Like the color of my skin,
Or the day that I grow old,
My life is made of patterns
That can scarcely be controlled.

Hey everybody! Just received this and thought I would stop in and pass it along...

Hi, all you animal lovers.

This is pretty simple... Please tell ten friends to tell ten today!
The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.
It takes less than a minute (How about 20 seconds) to go to their site and click on the purple box 'fund food for animals' for free.
This doesn't cost you a thing.
Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/

Thanks!

In the first one watched, Vincent (AKA "The Beast") wept for almost the entire episode after losing his beloved in the previous episode. I mean, he would have put Doris Day to shame with his weeping if they had decided on a contest.

Back from seeing A Chorus Line... Again!

Just like Sunday in the Park with George, no matter how many times I see it, the message of it still gets to me.  Even when the mirrors get stuck half-way in their turn during the final "Montage" sequence - like they did tonight.  I kept wondering if Cassie was going to sing, "All I ever needed was the Music, and the Black Flat..." :-\ ;)

My friend, Larry, (not DR elmore) joined me tonight - they were giving out comps tonight (papering), and since Larry had never seen the stage version of A Chorus Line - he had, of course, seen the movie - I invited him to tag along with me.  It got to him too.

After the show, we walked up to Columbus Circle to have drinks and dessert at Landmarc.  We split the dessert sampler - all six of their house desserts for $16!  -They're small portions, really they are.  The tiramisu and crème brulée tasted a little off, like they had been in the fridge next to something with lots of garlic in it.  -But once you got past the top layer, it was OK, better.  The lemon tart was a lemon tart.  The éclair probably would have been better a few hours earlier when the pâte choux was fresher and "dryer", but we could tell it had been filled with the chocolate pastry cream right before being served.  The chocolate mousse was good, but the star of the tray was the blueberry cobbler, which was served warm.

Of course, our favorite "dessert" was the cotton candy.  Tonight's flavor: Blue Raspberry. :)

And the Tawny Port worked well with it too.   ;)

And the waiter comped the additional serving of cotton candy that Larry wanted for the subway ride home.  Needles to say, Larry left a nice tip for the waiter.  But I think he was going to leave a nice gratuity anyway, even before we found out the extra cotton candy was comped.    ;D

You know what they say about DR Singdaw?
Tequila makes his clothes fall off.

Or a hearty Barbera d'Asti.

Time to buy THE WAR

der Brucer

It seems like Border's offers that 40%-off coupon almost monthly now.  If not twice or thrice.

I still remember two years ago when that discount was offered the first time.  And since I was working down in DC at the time, and there were five Border's location within an eight mile radius, well...  Boy, did I take advantage of that!

Utimate deli test is a Reuben sandwich! (Pastrami is a close second)

der Brucer

I used to test out delis based on their Reubens, but I found that there were too many "official" versions of it.  Some places make it with a dab of tomato paste... Some with no sauerkraut... Some grill the meat before putting it on the bread... Others grill the whole shebang until the cheese melts... Russian dressing, sometimes yes, sometime no...  -I like all variations.

In any case, Pastrami has become my test - at least with delis that cure their own meats or have it made especially for them.  The Hungarian Pastrami at Artie's is pretty darn good.  But Katz's still has my Number One vote.  -And I have yet to make it down to the new 2nd Avenue Deli - which is now on 3rd Avenue - to see how much of the deli transferred over.

ND is about to enter the primary/Caucus uproar. ND has their caucus for the Dems and REps on Tuesday.  Oddly I have only seen ads for Obama and McClain. None for HIlary. I did see a Ron Paul one today.

What DVDs do you have for sale, Jose?

Well, since you asked...

"Friends" - Complete Series (opened, but not viewed)
"M*A*S*H" - Complete Series (opened, but not viewed)
"Arrested Development" - Complete Series (still in shrinkwrap)
"Queer As Folk" - Seasons One and Two (still in shrinkwrap)
"Lord of the Rings" Trilogy Boxed Set - Widescreen, the theatrical release versions not the director's cuts (still in shrinkwrap)
Two Disney Tins - "The Mickey Mouse Club" and "Mickey Mouse in Black & White - Vol. 2" (both are still sealed)

See what happens when you have so many Border's locations near you, and a couple of copies of those 40%-off coupons?

...And I'm still looking at few other box sets, and wondering if I really will get to watching them sometime in the future.

Oh...

The train ride uptown from Columbus Circle was crazy.  Well, at least "packed".  I know the 1 trains had electrical problems earlier in the evening, so maybe that's what caused the crush of people.  And, yes, I was crushed as soon as people were getting on at 66th Street.

And then when the train stopped at 137th Street - one stop away from my stop - I realized they were announcing that the train would by bypassing 145th Street - a.k.a. my stop.  So I got off the train, and started walking home...  It actually wasn't as cold as it was earlier in the evening, and the wind had died down too, and, well....  Blogfodder.  ;D
