But it's due "there" sometime later this year, I believe.  Or at least in 2009.

As for the Friday Media Check...

Radio: WQXR

CD: Lots of stuff on stand-by.  With UPTAs coming up next week, I need to get the "feels" for some of the songs I'll most likely be playing at the auditions back in my head.  So, I have Wicked, The Last Five Years, Parade, Songs for A New World, The Wild Party (Lippa), Hairspray, Once On This Island, Ragtime, Seussical, My Favorite Year, The Drowsy Chaperone, Little Women, Footloose, Spamalot, etc., etc., etc... stacked up by my CD player.

The Internet connection got all wonky - couldn't get anywhere via Safari or AOL - restarted, which usually fixes the prob, but it still wouldn't load Safari correctly and for whatever reason I could only get to ONE website and no other.  Then I loaded AOL, which took about two minutes but finally worked and now everything is working.  It's so weird.  I mean, the wireless isn't losing signal that I can tell.

DVD (TA Transfer from Video): "Experience Preferred But Not Essential. (UK 1982).  I had a video of the movie years ago but lent it to a colleague who changed employment situation suddenly and kept the tape. I've just managed to replace - from Wisconsin!  It's a delightful movie set in a Welsh Hotel in 1962.

CDs:  Soundtrack "Once'

Topic of the Day:

On my DVR:  several TV shows over the last several days.  Last night, I watched "Lost" and the recap show before it at my sister's house with her and my niece on their 42" hi-def widescreen TV.  It was cool...and the shows were good, too. :)

In my CD player at work:  several CDs, including a very special Christmas CD through very kind courtesy of Singdaw. :-*

I liked Eli Stone - the story was predictable, but I like Jonny Lee Miller.  And who should show up as his mother but Miss Pamela Reed (without the baseball bat she carried in KINDERGARTEN COP).

We shall see what happens.  The sassy, snappy, quippy black secretary played by Loretta Devine was an annoying cliche, but perhaps her character will be more defined as the show goes on.

Good morning!

It rained a good portion of the night, and it's rained all morning since I've been up. I can't complain. We really need the rain (We were another 3" shy of normal in January), but it does make for miserable conditions when on it out and about. It's just cold enough to be uncomfortable with the damp conditions.

I agree with bk completely about Rachel Roberts deserving the Best Actress Oscar in 1963. And if not her, I would have given it to Natalie Wood in LOVE WITH A PROPER STRANGER.

I honestly think Patricia Neal was in the wrong category. He role may have been the leading female role in the movie, but it's a decidedly featured role in my eyes. And if she had been put in that category, I STILL would have given the Oscar to Margaret Rutherford.

A nice enough recording.  The staging was a bit too "one-set"-ish -- the Loveland sequences didn't have nearly enough of the glamour they should have had.

Good morning, all! When all this nonsense is over, I need to see my doctor for an IV or something to remove all the toxins and poisons from the crap I've been using to exterminate the vermin. Oy!  I've been Steri-Fabbing myself into a stupor.

Well, I did laugh at MEET THE SPARTANS but it's a pretty dreadful movie by the makers of DATE MOVIE, a film that I'd forgotten was god-awful until I saw it again last November in Ohio.  SPARTANS has several dance numbers, and I suppose if it were translated into Hindu, DR MBarnum would consider it an art film since it combines undressed men, sword & sandal and Bollywood elements.  The cast was game, but it was really pathetic. It was strange for a comedy that it ends with all the Spartans dying, and at the end of the credit there were about 15 minutes of out-takes.

I would swear that I've seen several of the Spartans on my VCR, and that leads to today's TOD:

(Of course, since der B and I had just come from the matinee of Pacific Overtures at the BNO, anything that followed was bound to pale in comparison.)

Certainly not my favorite rendition of the score, but I hadn't listened to it in years and thought I'd give it a spin. None of the new songs are patches on the ones they replaced or fit especially well, but I never saw this incarnation, and I understand script changes made it very different from the Broadway version which I did see (and love).

On the positive side, my new bed frame has shipped.

Several of my third floor neighbors, led by the demented Jaymie, are causing trouble: Steve, who had cartons of books in the hall for many months, started showing signs of anxiety about the Miami University cartons yesterday. He's also no longer taking the elevator, I notice, since Jaymie threw her fit earlier in the week about its being infested with bedbugs from my piano. To add insult to the injury and libel, the moron's information came from the drama queen Judy who's never seen a bed bug but swore they were all over the elevator when the piano was removed.  I saw no sign of vermin at all when I vacuumed the damed elevator and sprayed it with pesticide immediately after the piano was removed, I can only think I've got three neurotic  asses on a witch hunt.

I had a LOST marathon last night (no spoilers).

First i watched the 2 hour finale from last season again (with the explanation blurbs at the bottom).

Then i watched the recap show.

I must say of all 3 events (finale, recap, new show) i liked the recap show the least.

I think it would have been better if i had not just watched the finale from the previous season. Because a lot of it was the same. Plus it was so fresh in my mind.

Then i watched the premiere a bit later.

My mind is still trying to grasp everything that happened. I loved it!

Here is the recap:

Those script changes were radical - the older Ben/Buddy/Sally/Phyllis had actual conversations with their younger selves.  And so on.  No wonder Sondheim and company have put the kabosh on it being repeated.

Here's something that's occurred to me: why is it I never see pictures of the original Broadway production in color anywhere?  I've seen lots of black and white photos, and I know color pics were taken because I remember seeing them in Time magazine back when I was in college (he unafraidedly dates himself).  So, where are the color pics?

The makings for the chicken stock is in the oven.

I've split the makings into two pots, which will be easier to handle later and gives me a total of six quarts water to three pounds chicken wings.  They are sitting in a nice warm 200 degree oven, using the lower oven because it will be easier for me to reach in and skim any skum off the top of the pots.

And so far I haven't been asked to come in to work.

SPOILERS re: last night's LOST premiere:

Curious what you other Lost-ophiles thought about last night's episode.  It didn't immediately "wow" me, but there were certainly some interesting new threads that may weave into something exciting.

I really liked it. But it's a lot to process.

What i liked:

1. The flashforward with hurley was very interesting.

2. The idea of Oceanic 6. Does that mean only 6 got off?

3. Hurley meeting jack. And then hurley meeting "charlie". Hurley in the mental institution (and that mystery black man who went there).

4.naomi disappearing.

5. kate stealing the phone from jack during their hug.

6.Hurley telling claire about charlie (broke my heart).

7.Everyone going with locke.

8. hurley hearing stuff at jacob's cabin.

9. Jack shooting locke (but no bullets).

10. And i liked the end too with the guy parachuting to jack and kate.

It was just very overwhelming. So much happened.

Did anyone watch "The View" yesterday?  Whoopi Goldberg announced that she was giving away a spoiler, but that it really wouldn't spoil anything for devoted viewers.  Well, from what I could tell, the spoiler she gave away didn't really apply until they started showing the previews for next week's episode.  ?!?!?!?

During this past week, I've been fighting off various weather-related (lots of cold, rain, etc.) malaises, and one of the key ingredients in my "success" of same has been "teas".  For general malaise including upset stomach, peppermint tea works wonders for me.  I prefer Trader Joe's peppermint tea to any I've tried (only two other brands, but there it is).  And for stuffy sinuses, nothing beats Yogi Teas "Breathe Deeply".  It's all herbal and it's wonderful.

Today, I stumbled across this brand of tea, and I have to wonder if this tea is BODACIOUS:

I had an interesting/disturbing exchange at the store yesterday.

I was assigned for most of the evening to self-scan, but was spelling Larry at the express lane while he broke for his lunch.  The woman who was first to come up for my turn at the register was well over the fifteen-item express limit, and Larry had started to remind her that she was over, but I had said "Oh, no, it's OK," since she had already loaded about half her purchases onto the belt.

The woman had a defeated look to her.  "He sure seemed grumpy."

"Well, he lost his partner last August, and still isn't over it," I explained.  Larry and David had been together for twenty-two years.

"Oh.  Yes.  Well.  I've just had a death in the family.  Yesterday."

I gulped.

"I'm amazed I didn't start crying while I was here in the store."

"You have every right to cry.  Don't let anyone tell you otherwise."

She nodded.  "That, and because of it, I've had to move real fast."

I chanced to ask "Just how close a relative...?"

"Immediate family," she replied.  Ooops.  And thud.  It was code for her lover died, and she's been forced from the home they shared by her lover's family.  "I guess I should've seen the express lane sign, but my eyes have been real bleary."

"That, and it isn't very well lit.  A lot of people don't see it."  Truth to tell, a lot of people don't bother to look, but I wasn't about to say that under these circumstances.

We finished up with the scanning, bagging, and paying for her purchases.  "Just remember, you have every right to cry.  And you have every right to be angry."

She looked up at me, a bit startled.  "You're right, I am angry.  I'm a bit of everything right now.  Thank-you, you've been very kind.  And tell that other fellow that I appologize for being judgemental.  I didn't mean to be."

Fortunately, the rest of the evening was uneventful.

I have already put on a full suit of body armor, steel-toed work boots, a hockey mask on my face, and a football helmet........ all of this is in preparation for hurled eggs, slings and arrows, and justifiably delivered bitch-slaps from the fearless Poobah.   :-[

Let's just say that the past seven months or so have given traumatic, sad, and unimaginable a whole new meaning.  Selah.

I can't possibly make up for all of the missed birthdays and celebrations, but I can at least send a belated kiss (with tongue) to dearest Dear BK for his glorious birthday in December.

And the very best and sincerest Happy Birthday wishes to DR Kerry on his special day............. may cake appear from every corner of the land.

I'm catching up on yesterday's posts.

There seems to be some confusion.  I never said that hicks were the only people who "like" football.

What I said was "Is anyone out there enough of a hick to explain the appeal of football?"  The referral (from DR Ginny, our expert information waitress) to Andy Griffith's routine helped greatly.

And while I'm referring to yesterday's posts:

There are a few women who come to the store who wear burkas.  They are, to a woman, very kind, polite, well spoken, and (judging from their shopping carts) interested in feeding their families well, with lots of fresh veggies and fruits and little pre-processed foods.

OK, on that last, yeah, I'm a snob.  But I like these customers.  I really do.

Earlier today, a very nice young woman knocked on our door.  She's working on the house next door, the McGulag where a pipe burst and flooded the lower two floors.  They've turned off the water in the house, of course, but this makes for a complication any time anyone wants to flush the toilet.

Well, of course we're letting her fill a large bucket with water from our hose.  Not to do so would be unneighborly (not to mention stinky).

So, every time she shows up with the bucket, Mikey, Buster and Bonnie have to let us know that she's back.

It's going to be a noisy day.   :-\

When it rains it pours, home media-wise--went to Border's today and used a 40%, 30% and 20% coupon and got the Kurosawa Post-WWII box plus "Once" (and a book for the kids), then came home to find that El Cid had finally arrived (took a LOOOONG time--unusual for Amazon) along with a huge box of review DVDs, including another Criterion Eclipse set, this one the Lubitsch musicals.  So I will be a happy and busy viewer for the next several days.

Curious what you other Lost-ophiles thought about last night's episode.  It didn't immediately "wow" me, but there were certainly some interesting new threads that may weave into something exciting.

I found it a WOW from beginning to end. I can't believe you weren't immediately caught up with Hurley's "frontstory" and the information that brought forth. And all of the events back on the island were emotionally powerful, gripping, etc. . . . .

I couldn't have been more WOWED. Sorry you weren't.

There are some great color pics in Ted Chapin's EVERYTHING WAS POSSIBLE.

And the word of the day is: SUPPURATE!  Find a song for THAT one!
 CHALLENGE ACCEPTED BK
The Song Of The Day Is : DESTINED TO FESTER
(sung by a Group Called AUTOPSY)

It Ain't Pretty-But The Lyrics are as follows:

knee deep in sewage
maggotts burrowing thru my face
blinded by disease
waiting for my living death to end

slicing teeth
infectious chewing at my skin
my blood is clotted with pus
the maddening shrill cries
of rabid vermin never stop

I pick away
at my mouldering flesh
insanity has left my mind
a tortured mess

face chewed to bits
on my body they feast
swimming in the rancid sewage
spreading their disease

Have written almost six pages - they went quickly once I started, because it's an interesting sequence and has some good action in it, which I enjoyed writing very much.  I'll do another page and a half later, but for now I think I'll take a break and do a couple of errands and get them out of the way.  I may take a field trip later this afternoon to get some details for the book, and I think I will go back to Nate 'n Al later for a pastrami sandwich and a walk on Beverly Dr.

I watched three episodes of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST this afternoon. Since Catherine has been dead since the end of episode 2, the series has been drifting a bit, but now that a new female has entered Vincent's life (a detective still on the trail of Catherine's murderer and baby abductor), the show is wanting to restart itself with this new "partner" for Vincent. Obviously it didn't take with audiences since the show was canceled after this season.

One of the episodes was really entertaining: a hit man/brother of the man who killed Catherine was on the hunt for Vincent, so the episode became a cat and mouse stalking episode, and it was better than the other two I've watched today.

The hit man was played effectively by Lance Henderickson.

According to

Michael Riedel (http://www.nypost.com/seven/02012008/entertainment/theater/to_hal_and_back_857847.htm)

Hal Prince has had a minor stroke

And in the "What Were They Thinking" department:  at the end of this article, there is mention of a revival of Brigadoon...and yet another book that's being rewritten:

John Guare has rewritten Lerner's book, turning Brigadoon into a pacifist town that "disappeared" in 1939 because its inhabitants didn't want to live in a world torn apart by war.

I am very excited to watch the Superbowl this Sunday.

And also to see the ads (which is actually quite a feat here since everything but certain satellites only gives the canadian commercials).

Some whack-job on the TV is ranting and  raving about how women are ruining the Superbowl. He says no women really care about it - it should be for men only.  He then railed about all the commercials because they were geared to women's products like underwear and shampoo. It was curious to hear him declaim how men don't want to watch women's dumb undie commercials like Victoria Secret. (Just where is this line of of all-American men objecting to Victoria Secret commercials - the closest thing to soft-porn on Network TV)

Even tho I'm not a big football fan, I usually watch the superbowl because it is a national news event - now I need a reason to favor one team over the other!

I liked Eli Hunter - the story was predictable, but I like Jonny Lee Miller.

I missed Pamela in a new show!  I can't believe it.  But isn't the character named Eli Stone?

I heard on the news that Paris is in town.

No, there was no confusion.

No cake yet.   I bought a mixer and will bake a pineapple upside down down cake since my mother is not alive to do it anymore (it was her thing).   And since the place with the Oreo Cake closed, that is out of the question.  But there WILL be cake.

I've had a great day so far--- Laura took me to breakfast and a long walk through a lovely old neighborhood.  I took MusicGuy to lunch for fish and chips (at at a dive i've been frequenting since 1959), and I took Sugar for a walk on this nice sunny day.  :)

End Georgia Dog Fighting (http://network.bestfriends.org/georgiadogfightingbill/news/22479.html)

Quote
Dog Fighting Bill Passes House Overwhelmingly
January 30, 2008

Changes may still need to be made to the language once bill moves over to the Senate, but passage through the House is another big hurdle cleared

By Jon Dunn, Best Friends Animal Society

In a 165-6 vote, Georgia’s House of Representatives agreed that dog fighting does not have safe harbor in their state. H.B. 301 has moved swiftly since the session began, first passing the house committee, then through the rules committee, and then almost before anyone noticed the bill hit the floor and was voted on and passed!

So who voted against the bill? Rep. David Lucas (D-Macon) was one of the six who decided that stronger dog fighting laws were not necessary. He claimed that the activity of dog fighting is so deep rooted in many black communities that the proposed penalties would just be excessive. "We've got over 60,000 people in the corrections system now," Lucas said. "I think we take things too far sometimes."

We got the draft of our agreement with the Village Theatre regarding the Last Starfighter Workshop.  The public  presentations, according to the contract, would be May 23-25, which is on Memorial Day weekend.     This sounds to me like a good idea in terms of trying to get full audiences.

I'm a little concerned about having to travel back home on the Monday of Memorial Day weekend, so maybe we'll try for a red-eye flight on the Sunday night rather than flying back on Memorial Day itself???

Jose, Jane and other regular travelers - Would we likely run into fewer crowds on Memorial Day itself or on the overnight flight that Sunday night (which is 10:30 from Seattle  getting in very early (6:30 on Monday morning)?  We're also thinking about traffic on both ends of the trip.

Well, of course, they'll know more when there's daylight, but it looked like the slate roof protected the building from the falling steeples.  It's no longer used for worship, but as a community meeting and event venue.  They were in the midst of a $350,000 renovation.

FJL, I'm not sure which would be better for flying...as for street traffic the Sunday night flight would be best either way.  Plus you can rest up on Monday before returning to work on Tuesday.

If you can get a Monday morning flight, I don't expect much traffic on either end, & you can sleep the night before.

If you call the airline they can tell you which times have the most bookings.

Nope, the store I'm working in (only 10 hours a week, DR SingDaw) is owned by a grocer who owns the Shop N Save store next to Brewski's - it's him I'm doing the favor for. . . he has three children, two still in school, one who works daylight at Brewski's (but is NOT A GOOD WORKER) and he, himself, was in a life-threatening car accident several years ago, so when he asked if I could pick up a couple nights a week, I said, "yes."

DR Matthew, I'm sorry you chose the Broadway version of BRIGADOON. It's OK, and it IS the original cast, but stuff is missing.

I MUCH prefer the Shirley Jones-Jack Cassidy version due to the fabulous Susan Johnson playing Meg. Her two songs, especially "The Love of My Life" is the best version I've ever heard.

The Barrett-Lucker-Kaye complete recording is wonderful, too, but the Jones-Cassidy on LP was always my favorite version growing up with it as I did, and when it finally came out on CD a year or two ago, I couldn't have been happier.

For just $3.99 a dvd of music videos featuring either Emraan Hashmi or your very own Shahid Kapoor. Just watched one from FIDA, which I quite liked.

From where was it mailed?  I need to get myself one!  Or two, to share with friends!

I won the CD tonight and hopefully will have it soon!

Thanks, guys, so much!

And if anyone would care to see a music video featuring TD's little red shirted Bollywood hunk (and his muscles)from earlier today...

rent DIL MAANGE MORE, wherein you get to see said hunk take a shower. . .

MONK had a poor episode tonight. In fact, I figured out what was going on very early (part of it stolen from an old SUPERMAN episode). Monk never did actually figure out what was happening. The others did. This may be a first for the show.

PSYCH was entertaining, however, and I burst out laughing when Shawn entered into a lodge meeting with the members in purple hooded robes while on the soundtrack, music was playing from EYES WIDE SHUT. Hilarious.

Later Shawn and his dad engaged in a shouting match straight out of A FEW GOOD MEN. Also hysterical.

Speaking of winning cds, tonight when I came in from work, a kind gentleman in Madrid had emailed me saying that he saw that I "wished" for the Doris Day/Robert Goulet ANNIE GET YOUR GUN over at www.castalbums.org (http://www.castalbums.org) and that he had sent it to me via sendspace!  Officially now, I have seven recordings of Irving Berlin's masterpiece, including one with BK's personal friend Judy Kaye and another with BK and my personal friend Jason Graae!

I also finished watching as much of SUPERNATURAL as my DVR recorded - 15 minutes shy of the whole show. I did see the bad girl eliminated, but that's where the DVR cut off. I have no idea what happened next with Dean and Sam.

I loved that Day/Goulet ANNIE GET YOUR GUN when I was growing up, but I put the LP on the turntables for a spin a few months ago, and I wasn't as enthralled with it this time. Perhaps I need to listen to the whole thing. I remember listening only to the first side.

The arrangements are the problem with Day's ANNIE; both she and Goulet are ideally suited for the material and are quite finely matched, but the orchestrations. . .

They're in great voice, but I think Day wasn't much into character in the early part of the singing. She sings the songs sweetly and correctly but sounded too cultured too early on with nothing left to learn later in the show.

I keep meaning to ask...

Does anyone know if CBS was planning on broadcasting "Dexter" (from Showtime) before the WGA strike?

CBS eyes "Dexter" for edited broadcastWed Dec 5, 2007

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - As the Hollywood writers strike enters its second month with no end in sight, recycling cable series on broadcast networks is becoming a reality.
CBS Corp. president and CEO Leslie Moonves said that CBS is planning to run some series that air on its Showtime cable unit, including the breakout hit "Dexter."

"'Dexter' is probably the first one to go on -- with some edits," Moonves told reporters at UBS' Global Media & Communications Conference in New York. "It fits with our crime shows."

I accidently came across the website for a singer/pianist named Diana McIntosh, who hails from Canada... and I wonder if anyone here has ever heard of her? Her career has spanned decades...

No I haven't.

Especially if you are wearing that red dress from the other day!

I don't believe DR singdaw could ever "wear" that dress.  Oh, he could get his arm or legs into the bodice, but that would be "it", I fear.  He's better off having a snood made out of it....or wearing it as a cape.

That said, he could wave it at a bull in Mexico or Spain.

(Just where is this line of of all-American men objecting to Victoria Secret commercials - the closest thing to soft-porn on Network TV)

der Brucer

Even tho I'm not a big football fan, I usually watch the superbowl because it is a national news event - now I need a reason to favor one team over the other!

Hmmmm....the Patriots represent all of New England EXCEPT New York.  Does that work for you?

I ended my afternoon of viewing by watching the first quarter of last night's SUPERNATURAL. The show started late, so I'm going to miss the end of the episode. I may have to ask DR Ron Pulliam to fill me in on the ending since I know he watches SUPERNATURAL.

Well, either Dean saves his brother or his brother saves Dean, and both survive for another new episode the next week!    ;D

Are see-through envelopes a new thing by non-profit organizations when trying to invite people to charity events and such?  I wonder whether, since you can see what's inside the envelope, most people are more likely to open them or even less likely to open them.  I was sort of intrigued the first two times I got them - but I wonder if they'll become old hat pretty quickly.

I think the vellum envelopes are being to used to suggest a hint of "class" and "luxury".  And most likely cheaper than having a 4-color insert/flyer printed up.

*Vellum envelopes are also stronger, and can make it through mail sorting machines with less wear and tear than normal paper envelopes.
