Title: BYE BYE BIRDIE
Post by: bk on February 05, 2008, 12:34:14 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes wanted to shout Sparkle, Notes, Sparkle, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they want to know why there isn't a musical comedy entitled Bye Bye Cow.

I like rice (don't "love" it), but I really don't like rice pudding. :P I think that I expect too much for it to be like tapioca pudding, and it's not...so I don't like it.  But I LOVE tapioca pudding. :D

Favorite rice dishes??  Spanish rice in general or I'll get steamed rice at Panda Express and pour either their Mandarin sauce or sweet-and-sour sauce all over it. ;)

I voted this morning. There were no exit pollers at my voting location so I spoke to no one, not that I would anyway. If I did I would probably lie to them. I loathe exit polling and all the crap surrounding it. It's part of the instant gratification ethic that seems to have enveloped the country over the last 20 years. I won't watch any returns tonight. I'll ride the exercise bike and watch Jeopardy and reruns of old sitcoms and then I'll go tweak the 'puter some more until Anthony gets home from dance class.

Anthony is doing a reading of a new play for a friend on Saturday afternoon. He has rehearsal on Thursday evening so I may actually go and see Sweeney. I have yet to see it (or Enchanted) and a friend wants to take me for my birthday. Ant has no interest in seeing Sweeney so it's a chance for me to indulge and also catch up with my friend who has an audition in Philadelphia this afternoon for an infomercial for "a carbonated anti-oxidant drink"

Good morning, all! I've got six loads of laundry going on and I need to vote so this will be short.

I'm finally cleaning out the last corner of the apartment that's been acting as the storage for all of my plastic-wrapped clothing and linens.  I've decided to order one more filing cabinet this week and that will be my apartment spending for this month.

My day wil primarily be made up of sorting, folding, and storing away the laundry.  Tonight, apres 4 pm, dinner with our DR Jose.  and margaritas.

I hadn't thought of it as political commentary before, but your reminding us of it being Super Fat Tuesday made me think of the following lyric from A New Brain.

The bad trait will always predominate.
Bad trait is certain to win.
The bad trait will always predominate.
That is the law of genetics according to Schwinn!

Smart or Dumb.
The dumb will predominate.
Fat or thin.
The fat will predominate.
Lazy or not lazy.
The lazy will predominate.

Today, at work, we get to meet our new store manager.

Mark, the manager who came in and has been running the store since Carol retired, is moving to another store.

A fellow who has been at that other store is moving over here.

I'm not entirely clear on why the bumps are being made.

I'll just wear my red shirt and try to blend into the background.

For those who enjoy things Whovian, this from the Sci-Fi Wire (http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=2&id=47970)

Quote
Fourth Who, New Sarah Due

SCI FI Channel has acquired the fourth season of Doctor Who and its hit spinoff series The Sarah Jane Adventures from BBC Worldwide America. Both series are slated to premiere on SCI FI in April.

The Sarah Jane Adventures is written and produced by the same creative team behind Doctor Who, including multiple-award-winning writer Russell T. Davies. The series centers on Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen), former companion to the Doctor, who investigates offbeat mysteries with her young friends Maria, Luke and Clyde.

The fourth season of Doctor Who, meanwhile, brings back star David Tennant as the 10th Timelord, joined by a new companion, Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), who reprises her role from the previous Christmas special. The Doctor's previous companion, Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), also makes a triumphant return in the middle of season four.

DR elmore - I will say right now that I will most likely be abstaining from margaritas tonight since I will be playing auditions tomorrow.  There's also a slim chance I may be seeing a show tonight too - some quasi-last-minute-possibly-available ticket to a long-running-always-sold-out show.  We shall see.  But, again, I will call you once I know what time I will be getting out.  At least since it's a Chorus Call, we can't go past 5:00.  So, I'll give a look at the sign-up list when I get there in an hour or so, and give you a ring.

I have a question that maybe some PROJECT RUNWAY  fan can help me with.

I have never seen season 1.

They are airing it here now. It airs M-F every night for 2 weeks.

Anyhow last night the channel/DVR went off and i am missing the last 35 minutes (season 1 episode 6)(called Making A Splash).

I found this really detailed recap at television without pity that i am going to read:
http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/Shows/Project-Runway/Stories/Making-A-Splash (http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/Shows/Project-Runway/Stories/Making-A-Splash)

But I would really like to see the runway show, and the final swimsuits (luckily i sort of got to see most of them).

Does anyone know if (and rememeber i am outside the US) any of the season 1 episodes are online? Or even just the runway and comments?

Thanks!

As for the Topic of the Day...

Growing up, rice was our "daily bread" so to speak.  Steamed rice with dinner.  Which usually got made into fried rice the following day with breakfast, lunch and/or dinner.  -But even when my parents would make "leftover fried rice", they would always have another batch bubbling away in the rice cooker.

I'd say my favorite rice dish is the Southern Staple, Broccoli-Cheese-Rice Casserole.  A girl I went to college with would always make it for parties, and it was always the first thing to disappear off the table.  I believe her ratio of cheese to rice was almost 2-to-1. ;)

I also like the "rice cakes" that are served in Thai restaurants - although, there are also Chinese and Middle-Eastern variations.  It's where they take the rice that stuck to the bottom of the pot, pull it up in one piece (hopefully), then fry it up in oil until it's nice and puffy.  A true rice cake.  A fellow studio-mate of mine in college would make them up, and she would sprinkle sugar over them as soon as they came out of the oil.  YUM!

TOD - This is one of our favorite side dishes.  I especially like to cook pork chops in my cast iron skillet, browning them first, then simmering them in water, and letting them almost burn a couple of times (like last night's pot roast).  When we're ready to eat, I pour some of the pork chop juice into the wild rice.  Add a green veggie and you have another of our favorite dinners.

Review: 'Evita' star lacked edge

I think this is a great line and is how I felt about the show

"As as result, whole stretches of the show seemed like a Miss America contestant's talent offering -- well sung but somehow wrong."
Title: Re:BYE BYE BIRDIE
Post by: Cillaliz on February 05, 2008, 07:36:14 AM
and Bruce Miller summed it up this way

"Still, "Evita" isn't a nice little show with songs of longing. It's an unflinching look at the price of power and the people willing to pay it.

Wade probably could knock 'em dead as Gypsy Rose Lee in "Gypsy." But she's at least a decade away from finding the passion necessary for "Evita."

Casting isn't always everything but, in this case, it was certainly something. "Evita" deserves a queen. The touring production settled for a princess. "

Rice is probably my favorite "side" of all, and I can't think of any way of fixing it that I don't like. Frankly, I would eat it every day if I could justify such a diet. As it is, I have it about twice a week.

Today I will get back in touch with the Power Rangers who are after the red jewel of Isis in their latest set of adventures. Of course, they must also retrieve the blue sapphire which they lost to the evil witch Miratrix at the end of volume three of their adventures. The goal is to collect five different jewels which make up the Crown of Aurora. They have two (diamond and pearl), lost the sapphire, and must now get it and the ruby before moving on to the last gem.

On a more adult note, I am expecting Blu-ray review copies of two Disney/Miramax films: GONE BABY GONE and BECOMING JANE.

If they come today, I'll watch one of them tomorrow. I have the last Power Rangers set after the one I'm looking at today, so I'll alternate these two films with the two Power Rangers sets over today and the next three days.

All of them come out next Tuesday, the 12th.

Good morning.

Now that BK has a new dishwasher mine conked out. (My dishwasher is SUCH a copy-cat!) There's something wrong with the switch that turns it on. Marvelous Matt knows how to fiddle with it and make it start; I do not. Once it's on, it's fine. But then, if you can't turn it on...I shall be doing some dishwasher shopping today.

This month's Consumer Reports is all about dishwashers.  Think Kenmore.  :)

Rice- my fave is to take 1 cup of white rice and soak it in a can of beef consumme (sp?) while a roast is cooking in the oven. Then when you get to about the last 1/2 hour of cooking, you take out the roast, pour the rice and consume into the pan then put the roast back in on top of it and cook til it's done.   You can add parsley or whatever you want to the rice. My mom adds msg (Accent) but I leave that out.

*Needless to say, I was in my own personal hell for about two minutes this morning.

My first response is to pray....

Second response, besides inner-rage, afterwards when the singer collected their music, I would politely say "you may want to check the transposition it doesn't seem to be right"

If it's a "popular" song from a "popular" show, the people behind the table will know she doesn't know the song and their attention would end there and they would be on to the next person.

I feel your pain, though.  However, the people behind the table will know how well you play and realize that it was not your playing that was the problem.  If they really liked her, they might have asked you about the music.  But an auditioner that is not prepared is not worth talking about, especially at this level.

The sox are sorted. I hadthree that didn'tmatch anything so I tossed them, and I just received a call that my new bed frame will be delivered on Thursday afternoon.  This is so exciting.

Today in the mail, I received CDs of the score to JUBILEE, in its March 1986 premiere. I'd had the original performances on cassette and pined for a means to convert them, but it was a nice surprise to get the score on CDs.  After those performances I made a few adjustments to things I was unhappy about, corrected a few notes, and the BBC Radio performance reflects the show as itnow exists. Still, there are many good things about the 1986 premiere.

While I was eating, I watched a CLOSER episode since the DVD was already in the player. It was the one that got Brenda and Provinsa placed on temporary leave. This was one of the few episodes of THE CLOSER where I solved the mystery before Brenda got to the resolution. I still enjoy watching it.

Next, I watched POWER RANGERS - STAR OF ISIS. Whoever is producing this series, they obviously decided they needed to up the ante since there were new characters, new weapons, new Zords, and more special effects than in the first three installemnts of the series I've watched in previous sets. These episodes were produced in a somewhat grander scale.

I also watched the bonus features on the disc. There were only two of them. One was a 5-minute feature on the genetic enhancements the rangers have all undergone to increase some aspect of their power.

The other was a game to achieve the level of Reserve Ranger: for kids, a fun combination of trivia questions about the show, a reasonably simple geography lesson, and an arcade-tyle game.

Tennessee Ernie Ford

Yes, that's the general consensus.  The fellow who started the thread, though, is filled with doubt and an absolute certainty that it's Robert Mitchum.

He hinges his certainty in that Tennessee Ernie Ford was not given screen credit and surely WOULD have received it had it been him.

Several folks have told him it was not uncommon for films to have last-minute changes AFTER credits were done and that this was obviously the case here...but that Ford was definitely the singer, had a cover of the song and even did a cover with Monroe.

He refuses to believe it.  He cites the IMDb, which lists Mitchum (first) as singer of the song, then Tennessee Ernie and then Monroe, plus crediting Monroe for her other songs.  I've told him it seems  simple enough to me....Ford sang the title...and Mitchum and Monroe did their own singing in the film.  But....he's not convinced.

Is this person too young to have ever heard Tennessee Ernie on TV before? That's unquestionably his voice, and it's a trained voice, certainly not something Mitchum would have been able to do.

He was born in 1950.  He says he has always heard that it was Mitchum doing the singing.  Now that he's been offered up claims that Tennessee Ernie Ford was the singer, he claims he has compared Ford's single to the title in the movie, and he has concluded that it sounds more like Mitchum than Ernie Ford.  He cites Mitchum's title song for "Thunder Road" as his evidence that both songs are sung by the same man.

He's desperate for someone to agree with him.

TOD:  Betsy makes a wonderful couscous, spinach and pinenuts dish that is really tasty.
Couscous is not rice.  Sorry, it just isn't.  It's a type of pasta, very fine grained (larger if Israili).

There are pilaf dishes that have rice as the main ingredient.  And, with the addition of spinach and pine nuts, what DW Betsy is making sounds like a wonderful pilaf.

DR Matthew - So.... If a singer came in with a song... And had it transposed... But had it transposed incorrectly... Even the chord symbols don't match up... And the singer doesn't really know the song... And the song happens to be from a very popular show... And sitting behind the table is one of the first conductors of said popular show... What would you do?  :-\

Exactly!  And singer in question was a "he".  However, the "she's" this afternoon continued to challenge and frustrate me - and everyone else in the room. :-\

Poached chicken breasts - using a couple of cups of the stock I made for the poaching liquid, and then re-using that liquid to cook...

The rice, which will be augmented with some scallions, ginger, and a little mint.

And I met the new store manager, a pleasant fellow named Mike.  The good news is that he isn't coming in assuming he knows everything about running this store.  Instead, he's listening to everyone - including me - on how things are running now.  He was particularly interested when I pointed out how the placement of the self-scan registers very close to the entrance/exit has led to customers using whoever is monitoring said registers as a resource, asking where they can find various items in the store.

"So, that makes you a greeter, as well."

I simply tell them it is none of their business.  Voting is supposed to be PRIVATE!

I had a Kenmore that last a long time but was only an average performer. The Frigidaire I have now is superb.

Really? I was leaning toward Bosch, Kitchenaid, or GE. I'll now add Frigidare to my list, along with Kenmore. Thanks, Matt.

Had a full evening of viewing, and I watched lots of different types of shows.

I began by finishing THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT Part III. The first one got the best numbers, that's for sure, but the third tries harder to make something with the footage left, and I think they did a marvelous job with it.

Couscous is not rice.  Sorry, it just isn't.  It's a type of pasta, very fine grained (larger if Israili).

Yes, couscous is made from semolina, a form of wheat--definitely not rice.

I watched a very good episode of NCIS tonight. It was from this season, so Tony wasn't calling every two seconds to talk to his doctor girl friend (which I found very irritating and intrusive last season). Very intriguing story aboard what appeared to be a ghost ship potentially infected with an airborne pathogen.

Really enjoyed this one.

O!   M!   G!

Alton Brown is making tortillas!

He's seducing me into wanting a tortilla press!!

Just what der Brucer really needs, something else for me to make from scratch!!!

DR Woody, I tried making tortillas a number of years ago, but just couldn't get the hang of it. Is there some secret?

An old LA story:
When I was a little girl there was a little Mexican grocery store on Sawtelle Blvd (west side of the street) that had a tortilla factory in the back. I can't imagine why you'd need a room-sized machine to make tortillas, but that's what they had. The tortillas were right off the machine and still warm when we bought them. I'd snack on them on the way home, then my mother would make homemade tacos. We were probably the only family in Culver City in those days preparing Mexican food at home.

Freshly-made tortillas are a real treat.

There was a Mexican restaurant in San Diego in the 1980's that a group of Hispanic ladies making fresh tortillas. They did so in front of a large window, so passersby could watch them.

I actually experimented a few years ago with making fresh tortillas - at least corn ones. I found that the temperature of the water sometimes made a difference, also the amount of time you let the mixture set comes into play. Alas, the one "secret" that really seemed to make a difference: lard.

Hello all... for reasons, best explained by Vixdad's blog entry

Quote
She was all abuzz about how one of her teachers had got 45 group ticket to see "Rent", which she assured me is the hottest show in the whole school. Everyone, and she means everyone is talking about the show, singing selections from it or putting on impromptu street theater versions of key parts of it. She had to get on line at 6:30 am to reserve herself one of the tickets, and there were already 15 kids there when she got on line.

Rarely have I seen her so excited about something to do with school, or anything really.

Later on she was racing around getting ready to go and play basketball and a heated discussion broke out between her and Mrs Stevie (while I was composing the last entry, actually) in which I distinctly heard the words "I'm sorry, but we've been looking forward to I-Con for a year now." come from Mrs Stevie.

It turned out that the proposed expedition to see Rent clashed with the Saturday of I-Con, a three-day SF convention we attend every year. Saturday is the best day of the con for me, since it represents the major autograph chances with the guest authors and this year Harlan Ellison has agreed to show. He used to come every other year, but it's cold and damp here during most I-Cons and Ellison is no spring chicken. I digress.

Thinking I could broker a solution of genius I said "Why can't she go to see Rent on her own while we do I-Con? My mistake was to smile when I said this, I think.

"Because I've already bought the tickets1 and she already asked her friend Marlene to go with her"

Damnation! I usually buy the tickets, and I do it a bit later in the year. Mrs Stevie's eternal hunt for the bargain-priced advanced-sale tickets had hoist us on her petard. I thought for a second with a sinking heart and a squeaking wallet.

I'm gonna have to buy full priced tickets for the show. The Stevieling would probably take missing the show with good grace (she usually does in these sorts of situation) but I feel like crap just imagining how her little heart is breaking. Come I-Con saturday I'll be suicidal with guilt even though this is none of my doing.

Never, ever have kids.

Especially beautiful, talented, girl kids.

the Vixter and I will be in NYC to see this Saturday's matinee of RENT.  If any of our NY haines would care to meet up for dinner, drinks, desserts etc afterwards we'd love to see you!

Yes it's a different animal from the stage production.

For me every choice was right - even the casting.

IMHO a far more completely satisfying film than the much lauded "Atonement".

At last a film musical that works. ("Chicago" came close)
