Oh, yes, before I leave, I checked my bank account and my federal tax return has been directly deposited into my savings account! Hoo and Ray!

I checked the status of my state return but because I mailed it there is no information at this point. I mailed it one week ago. I refuse to pay $13.95 for the privilege of filing my state taxes electronically just so I can get a refund faster. I can do it for free on paper. It's an insult to taxpayers (IMHO). But then the State of New York doesn't care much about the taxpayer (or the environment) when they require you to send in not the W-2s that you received from your employer. Oh, no, those are not good enough. I (or a tax preparer for other people) have to fill in a form listing the information already listed on my W-2s. What an astonishing waste of paper. Who the h**l thought of this stupid requirement? It's been happening for at least 3 years now and the number of trees felled for this assinine project could probably build thousands of houses for people who might need a place to live.

End of rant. You are now returned to your regularly scheduled postings.

Good morning, all.  The laundry is in and I've caught up on all of yesterday's posts.  I will not be finished with the laundry until 9:15 or so, which will get me to Toyland around 10 or so.  On the way, I need to stop and buy another gallon of Steri-Fab, my bed bug killer of choice.

Other stops include my accountant's office to drop off some 1099s and a stop at Ron Raines' home to drop off a book for goddaughter Charlotte.  She's currently performing at U of M in John Guare's wonderful play Landscape of the Body, and her mother and godmother Celia Weston are flying to Detroit tomorrow morning to see it.

My media toys are still mostly out of commission. so I can contribute little to the TOD except what I'm listening to on my iTunes:
Liz Callaway
Offenbach's La Vie Parisienne
Several New Amsterdam Theatre Company performances including the   premiere of my restoration of COle Porter's JUBILEE
Guy Haines, who always cheers me up with his excellent pitch and turn of a phrase
Hans Christian Andersen & The Court Jester with Danny Kaye

I hear you DR BEN.  They stopped the FREE internet filing here two years ago, saying they didn't have enough people to process them.

What is the difference?  They have to have processors for the PAPER forms that are sent in?

Crazy.

Morning to all and sundry; get-better-soon vibes & xylophones to bk!

TOD:
On the iPod video: Sunday in the Park with George (note: watching "Children & Art" on the subway is NOT a recommended activity; staring at the iPod and sobbing, I must have caused half the car to start edging away from me... hmm, then again, it might work to get me a seat during rush hour)
On iTunes/ iPod music: five albums of songs by Abie Rottenberg, an Orthodox Jewish composer, who is one of only three songwriters (Sondheim & Harry Chapin being the other two) who have written songs that I can't sing without breaking down completely.

Ben - I think (speculation on my part) they're getting people used to typing in all that darn info from the W-2 right on the return to get us all ready for the day when they will only accept the return electronically, which is a time I'm not looking forward to.

There are some returns that are already REQUIRED to be sent in electronically (corporations with over a certain amount of assets, for example), and we are jumping through hoops trying to get all the info onto the returns themselves without having to attach various paper attachments.   It's adding to the tax preparer's work, and not usually in a profitable (or interesting) way.

I join your rant.  :)

Sing, we like the new PC very much. The only little glitch is because we didn't get Vista as the operating system we didn't get DVD burning software with the computer. Even though I got a DVD burner as part of the system and it came with software, the program is a stripped down version of Roxio and only burns CDs, not DVDs! We have a clunky program that came with our camcorder called Nero Express which we will use until we decide which full featured program to buy. The monitor is great. It's a 17 inch flat screen with two USB ports on the monitor. The color and resolution is top notch. It's got everything I want and need (except for the DVD burning software) and we are very happy with the purchase. Now we just need to get the old system out to Long Island.

Dr Ben, I empathize re taxes. Mich recently added a 2nd page to its EZ form, and I'm always a nervous wreck filling it out, and of course I had to pay an extra 3$ in use tax(sales tax) for cd I ordered from  Footlight Records....Car CD has lotsa Mozart(I'm working my way thru one of those bargain complete works of(135$  for for all of Mozart)...This weekend i'll be celebrating Mardi Gras(delayed due to work,) by listening to obscurata- Lps of Let it Ride, Cry for us All, Chrysanthemum, Make Me an offer, Marco Polo. etc etc and so forth.Hopefully I'll get all my housework done while this is occuring. Then  time to read a new bio of Irene Kamirovski.

Those disclaimers on the ginormous box sets always crack me up.

During shipping, discs in boxed sets occasionally become dislodged without damage. Please examine and play these discs. If you are not completely satisfied, we'll refund or replace your purchase.

Yeah, OK.  I mean, I appreciate their offer.  I guess I'll just put my entire life on hold and listen to each of the 185 discs right now...and I'll get back to you in a day or two if there are any problems!   ::)

GOOD MORNING!

As per the topic of the day, after finishing the novel WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, I felt compelled to watch a movie which I had never seen in its entirety:

THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH - which is certainly not as bad as I have been led to believe; it definitely is NOT the worst film to take home the Best Picture Oscar (AMERICAN BEAUTY and CRASH come to mind), but it is quite the entertainment from that director of spectacles, Cecil B. DeMille.  It is overlong, to be sure, and what plot there is could have taken a brisk ninety minutes to tell, but that cast!  Dorothy Lamour, Gloria Grahame, Cornel Wilde, James Stewart, Charleton Heston and the top-billed Betty Hutton.  It's interesting to note that those are not usually stunt doubles doing the high wire antics that Hutton and Wilde do.  Paramount's dvd has no extras whatsoever, though the transfer is sparkling and clean!

Also this week, I watched

WATER, which I spoke of yesterday.  Set against the rise of Gandhi, the story takes place in an ashram for widows and is seen through the eyes of an eight-year old widow.

SHIKHAR - another ashram, another time, as a corrupt builder uses every means necessary to steal land and build a modern city.  His greed goes so far as to try to swindle the land away from Shahid Kapur and his family by making him a business partner and introducing him to the world of high-stakes gambling, carousing, wine, women and song.

DIL MAANGE MORE - Shahid Kapur finds that he is irresistable to three very different women; chaos ensues.

CD-wise, I've been listening to nothing but Judy Kaye since Sunday night.

Friday morning greetings!  No, I was not almost an hour late for work; my workday started right on time at the bank and post office performing treasurer duties for a professional organization (just in case any of my busy-body co-workers were wondering...).

When the IRS starts requiring electronic tax filing, DR Ginny's low lifes are going to start showing up on DR FJL's doorstep!    :P

We're always amazed at those who want to use our public computers for tasks that require some confidentiality.  And those who look on the tax forms table and ask why we don't have their W-2.  How do some of these people get through the day?

I saw VICTOR/VICTORIA on stage, and it definitely was not up to the quality of the film version.

One thing about the stage version I liked a lot: King declares his love for Victor BEFORE he knows for sure that Victor is a woman. Makes all the difference in the world in the respect I have for the character with that one little change.

DR td - what bothers you about American Beauty?  The writing?  The direction?  The acting?  ???

Curious if you liked Six Feet Under.

I can't think of a single thing I liked about AMERICAN BEAUTY, except the cinematography; whereas I can't think of a single thing I didn't like about SIX FEET UNDER.
As far as AMERICAN BEAUTY is concerned, I just found it to be a pretentious bore, trying to be the great American "angry young man" movie, populated with people too full of themselves and too full of bullsh** to be believable.  As much as I dislike Nicole Kidman, her Satine in MOULIN ROUGE! was a thousand times more convincing than anyone in AMERICAN BEAUTY - - and I'm the one who laughs uproariously every time Nic's Satine states that she "wants to be an actress."

On my 40th birthday, I saw VICTOR/VICTORIA on stage at the Marriott Marquis.  At least I got to see Julie Andrews on stage once in my life.
I was hoping it would be a better show than it was, but I remember reading about all the out-of-town troubles in the theater magazines at the time and knew that it was a risky show.  I have a copy of that cut song about all the other gay men out there, and it's as bad as its reputation purports it to be.
On the other hand, there were things I did appreciate in the production:  King's confession prior to full knowledge (as mentioned by Matt), the set design, Greg Jbarra, "Paris by Night" and Julie herself.
I truly missed the slapstick, though. I thought that the cockroach scene, the "Shady Dame from Seville" and the Clouseau-like inspector kept the film on an even keel; I thought that there could have been many more laughs onstage.

Oh speaking of Valentine's Day.

I was babysitting my 28 month old niece. She is not good if you tell her anything is a secret/surprise.  My sister had been making her hubby a card and she told megan it was a surprise. And she proceeded to announce to her dad that mommy had a card for him and would he like to see it.

Anyhow I had brought over some cardstock and stickers. And i think i may have mentioned the words Valentine's day once. But i didn't tell her it was  a secret or tell her not to tell anybody. But i sort of didn't get her excited about it so she wouldn't realize she had anything to tell.

So she makes a card for her parents. And doesn't say anything.

Then all of a sudden when my sister comes home she screams at the top of her lungs, "auntie i want to play valentine's day". I figure if i pretend i don't know what she is talking about then she'll drop it. But she proceeds to go over to the bag with the cards in it and get them!

It was too funny!

SURVIVOR SPOILER

The only thing I watched on television last night was "Survivor"...and...

SPOILER

...what a kick it was to see my least favorite player of ALL TIME cop out and ask folks to send him home.  I was very glad of it.  Next week, let the REAL game begin.  CBS had been milking the return of Jonny Fairplay in promotions...and I hope they got the audience they wanted 'cause Jonny's now toast.

And....the return of "Big Brother" and "Jericho" will make Tuesday evening a real pleasure next week.

I really didn't feel like we got to know the fans at all. So i had a feeling the favorites would lose.

It was interesting how the favorites split into 2 teams. And i love one and really dislike the other.

My fav was always ozzy (although i liked his bushy hair a lot).

So i love ozzy, parvatti, amanda, james.

I don't remember ami. And i don't like jonathan or eliza. And i never cared for yauman too much (others loved him). And i hate johnny fairplay.

But that said i thought that yaumna tackling johnny fairplay was awful for the idol.

I still have no idea what actually happened last night. Because it seemed like ozzy./james/parv/amanda would vote out eliza. So did they realize johnny fairplay was manipulating him (i hated how he told the other team their plans). Or did he (johnny) actually end up really wanting to go. They never explained that.

I really dislike johnny fairplay. BUt you have to give it to him. Wow he totally had the game. He was really good.

I was sort of torn. I mean I dislike him and wanted him gone (plus he would have ruined my team's game). But i think it would have been fascinating to watch.

But wow, did you guys see ozzy and amanda making out in the preview?

I have no idea what i think of the fans, since i don't know any of them.

I also really liked it. but my gosh, my brain gets a workout each time trying to process everything.

It was interesting to get to meet new people. ANd i liked how they showed their stories.  But it is a lot of new people at once.

I also really liked the reason they were on the island.

I am really liking this season so far!

More Survivor:

When Yau Man tackled Johnny Fairplay for the idol....I was never happier in my life! LOL!

I have always liked Jonathan...there is just something about him that appeals to me...and it is nice to see Ozzie again...although I didn't even recognize him with his short hair....and of course James is just so nice to look at! What a man!

I think this will be a very fun season of SURVIVOR!

I think Cirie has a clue that she could be gone most quickly if she displays any 'tude.

She was one of my least favorites in her season.

That said, I Googled the new season and at one site, this was the "breakdown" on Cirie:

FROM SEASON 12 (PANAMA):
Cirie Fields, 37, couch potato, fearer of leaves.

I must now check to see what other evening entertainments are going on next week in L.A.

They (CBS) do leave us in the dark much of the time, but I guess it's because they want the final vote results to be as much of a surprise as possible.

It was illuminating, though, to see that EVERYone voted for Jonny.  Jonny cast his vote for Ozzy.

Looked at that line-up of stage productions in LA and the only one that really sounded interesting was DRIVING MISS DAISY starring Michael Learned (the mom on LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE)...but it was all the way down in La Mirada and I don't want to make that trek at night.

I wonder if any other old time TV stars are doing anything on stage next week? I must find out.

Yes, I think I learned the Saltine lesson - I think the same thing happened last time I had food poisoning.  And funnily, I've always heard that 7-Up is calming, but it has never been calming, not once - I think someone from 7-Up started that old wives' tale.  I do much better with Diet Coke, frankly.  That has never caused my nausea to get worse, whereas Snapple has.

Exactly.  I feel the same way about ginger ale.  Who buys flat ginger ale?  And how long does it take for non-flat ginger ale to go flat?  If I'm nauseous, waiting an hour or two won't help things along.

MORONS!

I'm so weary of dealing with them over at Film Score Monthly messageboard.

One fellow -- in a thread about how hard Jake Gyllenhaal is taking Heath Ledger's death -- took issue with someone's comment about "Brokeback Mountain's" importance as a film.

I posted I thought it was HUGE for American cinema.  He demanded to know why.  I told him.  He then pronounced that "Philadelphia" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman" had already broken that ground.  I countered that neither film was a "love story" and that neither film went as far in exploring relationships nor had the emotional impact that "Brokeback" had.

He then began arguing with me that "Brokeback" was nothing special and contrasted its $75 million boxoffice (and raves from "left-leaning" critics and their organizations that gave the film prizes) to the more than $100 million take of "The Passion of the Christ" and categorized that film as having far more of an impact, blah blah blah blah (including its cold reception by the "left-leaning" press).

I asked him what on earth he was talking about?  I saw no parallels between the films or anything I'd said.

We bantered, and I finally told him I thought his points were silly.

Today, he's taken me to task for not discussing his points.

Sigh.

I told him I had said everything I was going to say about his points....those I thought relevant AND those I thought absurd.  I suggested he grind his political axes with someone else because I've no interest in them.

The "serious" reply to your question, Tom, is that it's a daily feature at Amazon.com in which a product is heavily discounted for the day or until the designated quantity identified for the discount has been exhausted.

Sometimes, the deals are really good.  And sometimes, they seem lame to me (but probably really good to others).

Yes, Lost was great last night.  My qualms after the first episode have abated.  Though I do wonder now if the flash-forwards were (ahem) a flash in the pan.  Or maybe they will stick with the "forwards" for established characters whilst doing flashbacks for the new ones.

At this stage of the game, I think they've exhausted the backstories of the original core people from Season 1. I'm sure there's much more to learn about newer people like Ben and Juliet and possibly even Desmond, but I can't see much point getting another Jack backstory.

Better you than me! I have that four disc Criterion set of THE LAST EMPEROR to get through in about 10 days that will be something of a trial (I'm not the movie's biggest fan though I hope maybe I've softened to it in all the years since I've seen it), so 14 discs especially dealing with war would not be my choice to watch if I HAD a choice.

Next, I watched GONE BABY GONE in Blu-ray. It's only moderately successful as a mystery (I figured it out early), but as a character study and the repercussions affecting those involved in the investigation, it was very affecting. Oh, that last three or four scenes of the movie were SO emotionally charged (internally for the viewer) even though all the bullets and bloodshed were over! My insides were churning over the dilemma of the final decision.

Are you sure it wasn't Ann Coulter using a different screen name? The ill-logic is there!

One of the songs was performed in English (called "You Don't Have To Be There") by Alice Ripley in her duet concert "RAW (http://www.kritzerland.com/EA.html)" with Emily Skinner (recorded by BK on Kritzterland!).  I don't know if it's one of the songs in the songbook (yet...I'll listen tonight at home), but if it is, I'll pencil in the English lyrics. :)

1952 was a strange year at the Oscars, that's for sure!  It's the year that Jean Hagen was nominated for supporting actress, while SINGIN' IN THE RAIN was not nominated for best picture.

It's only strange in retrospect.  In 1952, "Singin' in the Rain" was a flashy musical comedy with tried-and-true musical numbers and lavish production values.  It was not taken seriously.  Read what N.Y. Times movie critic Bosley Crowther (http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/review?_r=1&res=9A01E1D8163AE23BBC4051DFB5668389649EDE&oref=slogin) had to say about it.  As great as the review is, I think it's apparent he doesn't believe it's as significant as folks think it is today.

I offer this paragraph as evidence of Crowther's way of seeing the film 56 years ago:

Quote
Take as a token of the picture its title, "Singin' in the Rain," which has no more to do with its story than it has to do with performing dogs. Of all things, this song-and-dance contrivance is an impudent, offhand comedy about the outlandish making of movies back in the sheik-and-flapper days when they were bridging- the perilous chasm from silent to talking films. And its plot, if that's what you'd call it, concerns a silent film star who is linked with a slut-voiced leading lady while wooing a thrushy new young thing.

That sort of dismissive way he describes the story and characters was typical back then.

Few movies of this kind were taken "really seriously".  The comedies that did make it with the critics and "establishment", like "Adam's Rib", embraced social issues.  The musicals had to be loftier, like "An American in Paris" and its artistic ballet that allowed many critics and Academy voters to forgive (and, thus, reward) Alan Jay Lerner for his tired screenplay.

In 1952, "With A Song in My Heart" was far more highly regarded as a motion picture musical with a strong real-life heroine.  It was a "dramatic musical" film.   A lot of folks express disbelief today that "Singin' in the Rain" didn't win the Oscar for music adaptation (confusing that category with "Best Musical").  Either way, "With A Song in My Heart" was pretty much a sure thing that year.

Yes, times have changed and "Singin' in the Rain" is appreciated more fully for its tale of Hollywood's changeover from silents to talkies and its parody of personalities who did and did not succeed with the changeover.  Gene Kelly's wonderful title song dance, and the "Broadway Ballet" give it an added appeal for "most" movie fans of all ages/persuasions (except JRand, of course!).

Historically, it is another golden star in a list of of gold-star accomplishments by the Freed Unit at MGM.  Seen as a whole, movies made by Arthur Freed and his unparalleled team of associates look positively brilliant compared to most fare from other studios during those years (1940s through 1950s).

I don't watch "Singin' in the Rain" all that often.  It's fun, but it wears thin after a while.

Some folks think that's true of all musicals, but t'ain't so.

What a man!

I think this will be a very fun season of SURVIVOR!

i really dislike johnny fairplay. But i thought yauman was way out of line. I guess if it was someone i loved vs someone i hated, it might have made a difference.

Jonathan was always quite smart. But i just never really liked him on his season.

It is in the songbook!  I listened to the sample on www.kritzerland.com and the song in Swedish is called "Du Måste Finnas." :)

I did not think him out of line.  Fairplay already had one idol.  Yau Man saw that, and they both saw the "other" idol and Yau Man made a mad dash to get it before Jonny snagged it.  His momentum propelled him into Fairplay (who, since he had the one, surely didn't need two since they were only going to be in play one time).  Jonny's whine afterward was his "way" to get folks to pity him.

I was tickled pink that Fairplay had to give up the one he did get because it was for the other team (and Jeff had been very clear that there was an idol for "each" team).  Jonny was greedy and got what he deserved.

Yau Man RULES!

DR Jennifer,

I also don't think Yau Man really meant to tackle Johnny Fairplay....they were both running so fast and towards the same object...JF was just being a big, whiney, idiot, baby. If he could't handle being tackled by a 50-something-year-old who weighs in at around 95 pounds...well, then he should never have considered being on such a physically challenging game show.

And besides he is such a jerk!

I have tried to master the art of tying a real bow tie, but it eludes me...  :(

If you fly out here, i can show you.  I can send you a couple of lessons-- but be prepared to spend a couple of hours some frustration, nad the fact it won't look right away the first time.  It takes some fiddling, and some ties work better than others.   I have a about 200 ( I gave some away to tohers who are hopefully wearing them), so i know which ones work--------- but it's worth it.

Try Clifton's Cafeteria downton-- it's a trip (althogh you don't see many stars there).   Nate and Al's Deli in Beverly Hils used to be a good palace for seeing stars.  There is always te Polo Lounge (which a in;t cheap) but a sight to see.   If Chasen's were still there (also not cheap--- but worth it), you'd Be guaranteed!   The farner's market used to be a  good bet,   ASk the expert, BK.   Rodeo Drive and Santa Monica are good bets, too.    Lyn would know too, so ask him.

All in all, a very good day.  No real crash and burns.  There were a few "questionables", but, overall, a good group of people today.  I had a few brain farts in the afternoon - too much sugar, I think (Hershey's is one of the corporate sponsors, so there's tons of chocolate around here), but nothing that was detrimental or audition-stopping.  I hope.

I did stop by the dance auditions for a bit just to watch the teaching of the three combinations, and also to say Hi to the choreographer and give her a big hug.  And when I got back to my hotel room, there was a gift basket waiting for me on my bed.  It was from the hotel manager.  -Apparently, I was listed as a V.I.P. on the convention list, so now I have a nice supply of grapes, apples, oranges, chocolate chip cookies, potato chips and Snickers bars.  :)

Oh, that type of gift basket on the bed!

Millie is way too boisterous for Magnus at the moment but he does "look" for her when he goes for his stroll and there is certainly a mutual friendliness.  Magnus and Fosca have always had a good relationship with their neighbours.

Hello from Magnus to Uncle Jose.

For the past 10 days we have had a pair of Sparrow Hawks here. Interesting to see them but given their dining habits I wish they would move on!

Well, I was originally going to have either their Chocolate Silk Pie or their Banana Pudding (which was the daily special dessert).  However, when I asked my waitress what I should have for dessert, she immediately came back with, "The Lemon Icebox Pie.  It's sooooo good."  So, I thought I'd give it a try, and since I had never had it there before, well...

And it was soooooooo good!

*And when I looked at the restaurant's cookbook - which I should have purchased today - the ingredient list for the Lemon Icebox Pie consisted of the following ingredients: lemon juice, eggs, sugar and condensed milk.   No wonder it was sooooooo good.  ;D

I've always enjoyed the movie for what it is:  A spectacular circus story told well and with a handsome cast.

Overlong for the story it has to tell; pretentious DeMille narrative, cornball.

Dinner:

Salmon pinwheels, stuffed with crab florentine.  (Store-bought, but cooked in my own oven.) (Pays to have a good seafood department.)

Mashed potatoes with chopped scallions.

Steamed Brussels sprouts, with a sorta beurre blanc (meaning lots of shallots and only one stick of butter).

(But since I'd never tried a beurre blanc before, going overboard with the shallots meant that if it had broken or otherwise failed, I could instead call it a shallot sauce.   :D)

I began my evening by rewatching GONE BABY GONE and listening to the audio commentary. A little livelier than the commentary attached to the deleted scenes, but it's more anecdotal about the people in the shots rather than giving intensive background information on filming the movie, how he got chosen to direct, etc.

Next, I decided to go ahead and get a head start on FMAILY TIES. I put in disc one in the set (out of four discs), and watched all six episodes on the disc.

I never watched this show when it was on the air, so the puny quality of the writing surprised me. Every character calls another character by name almost every time they address them. The plots are pretty spare. Good cast; everyone works hard and does well with what they have, but I'd be surprised if the writing won any Emmys. I'll check later.

When I finished the first disc of FAMILY TIES, I channel surfed and saw the 2005 movie version of THE PRODUCERS was playing on one of the HBO channels. I flipped over and what do you know! "Springtime for Hitler" was just beginning so I watched that entire sequence.

Of course, I mainly watched because of John Barrowman who sings the lead chorus of the song. I believe he must have been wearing blue contacts over his blue eyes, because his eyes were bluer than blue in that number. So bright blue they looked unreal.

The movie is pretty much a bust, but that entire number probably works better than anything else in the picture (since it's stage bound, that's where Susan Strohman would feel more at home.)

I emailed JR about this earlier--this is an eBay auction featuring a scene with Akim Tamiroff and Frances.  Unfortunately, it is not from the only film FF and AT made together.   ;D  So I am trying to identify the woman on the right to see what film FF may have started but not finished.  JR thought it might Anna May Wong before the seller upped the size, but now it looks to me like Gale Sondergaard, except the only film she made with AT was "Anthony Adverse," which this scene is obviously not from.  Any guesses on the actress or, even better, the film?

Not familiar with Bi-Lo, but their name suggests the goal.

Food Lion is notorious when it comes to their quality.

For the stores in my locale, we've got:

Super G - where I work, well regarded.

SuperFresh - tries to place itself as high quality, but even after their recent remodel comes across as claustrophobic and uncaring about the customers.

Food Lion - absolutely tiny store.

Safeway - the newcomer in our area, seen as overpriced and not very welcoming.

After nine years, Super G is still regarded as clean and friendly - many people just "visiting" the area are surprised to learn the store is that old.  A lot of customers are worried about the remodel we're going through.

DR SWW - Is "Super G" a member of the Giant Food (http://www.giantfood.com/) family of stores that are part of the DC-area grocery scene?  *They're in-store bakeries make some pretty good hamantaschen - which get re-labeled as "bishop's hats" during certain times of the year.  ;)

Harris Teeter started setting up shop in the DC-area a couple of years ago.  Big, clean, well-lit, open 24-hours stores.  I like them.

Safeway still has a pretty decent share of the market there, and they've aggressively remodeled and/or rebuilt a lot of their older stores over the past couple of years.

However, the latest grocery craze to hit the Nation's Capital is Wegmans (http://www.wegmans.com/).  WOW!
