All this talk of food and cooking yesterday!  Does any DR have any experience with pasteurized and homogenized eggs?  I was wondering if they could be used for those older recipes which call for uncooked eggs.  Many years ago my mom used to make a killer pineapple desert which used uncooked eggs.

Sunday morning greetings!  Richard is officiating at church today and then we're taking Rob and Mary Linda out to lunch to celebrate her birthday (which is actually tomorrow).

Wonder if DR Singdaw produced the Seuss from memory last night?  I tried to post a photo of my traditional green eggs and ham Easter dinner, but the upload folder is full.

That made me think about June Wilkinson....and that made me think about DR CP.  I wonder if he has watched EL CID.

Good morning!

Another gorgeous day. Getting to sound like a broken record. Don't think it'll be quite as warm today (it got up to 67 yesterday), but cloudless blue skies are still the order of the day. February so far has definitely been above normal temperature-wise.

I'll be finishing FAMILY TIES early this afternoon. There's also a gag reel on the last disc which, along with the network promos for each episode, are the only bonuses offered in the set.

After that I'll be starting my last TV box set for awhile: GIRLFRIENDS, a comedy series on the CW which I've never seen. There are (yikes) 27 episodes, so I'll be watching that most of the day, I suspect.

Supposedly the writers' strike could be over today. If so, some shows are going to go back into production to produce a handful of episodes to be broadcast in April and May. Some shows will not go back into production until summer to begin episodes for the fall, so for them, their seasons are effectively over.

I a little while, I will port over a list of the shows we talk about here and what the plans are for them for the rest of this current TV season.

After I finish GIRLFRIENDS, I'll begin with two Criterion films (PIERROT LE LOU and WALKER) and the Nicole Kidman MARGOT AT THE WEDDING this week. I'll be doing these during this coming week. (They come out on the 19th.)

The Godard film is a two disc set which I suspect will take me a couple of days to digest.

Good afternoon, all!  I slept until 10:30, caught up on yesterday's notes, trashed a lot of emails, and here I am.  Last night I slept on my mattress in its allergin/bedbug protective cover to see the state of things, and I had no bed bug problems so that's a good sign.

I have a little bit of Lady of the Slipper writing to do, and then I plan to work on my writing area, do some sorting, filing, and tossing.  I'll get that back in order, and then pray to God that some work comes in soon.

After that, I guess I'll continue watching the BROOKLYN SOUTH episodes. I can't believe this neat series only lasted one season.

I bought a nice 8mm video camera to replace the BIG TAPE video camera I have had for almost 20 years.

This is a nice small Sony camera that came with all of the accessories and a carrying bag.  Got it on EBAY for $25 including shpg.  The seller had purchased it at an estate auction.

And it works.  Inside the camera - which doubles as a VCR was a tape from last year of Christmas, a few birthdays, and assorted other family occasions.

Since it was an estate sale, the owner may have passed away - or he may have just bought a new camera.....but anyway.  Now it is part of my future estate sale.

The WGA strike is over, as I said it was two days ago and certain people on other messageboards yelled IT'S NOT OVER UNTIL IT'S OVER and that based on what they'd heard the deal was that the meeting at the Shrine would be very contentious - I said it wouldn't be. - it wasn't.   I told them all they had to come back and apologize if I was right.  Funny, they've all disappeared into the good night.

DR Ginny - no alas...not from memory.   :-\   But I hope you will try again, when the upload folder has been cleaned, to post your Easter dinner photo!!!!  :)

So, here I am, catching up on yesterday's posts and reliving the joy that is Dr. Seuss (thanks, Singdaw!) and I'm half-listening what's on TV.  I'm not really watching anything, just changing channels when I take the time to watch what's on and realize that I don't want to watch what's on. ;) Anyway, a commercial comes on about some new acid reflux/heartburn medicine and I don't believe what I'm hearing!  I turn to see the name of the product on the screen.  It's spelled exactly like this:  AcipHex®  But what I'd heard was a fake doctor telling the fake narrator of the fake story:  "Fred, you have acid reflux disease.  I want you to try prescription Ass-Effects!" :o And later, the voice-over says, "Ask your doctor if Ass-Effects is right for you."  And finally, "So call today and learn more about Ass-Effects."

;D

All this talk of food and cooking yesterday!  Does any DR have any experience with pasteurized and homogenized eggs?  I was wondering if they could be used for those older recipes which call for uncooked eggs.  Many years ago my mom used to make a killer pineapple desert which used uncooked eggs.
Going to Michael Ruhlman's Elements of Cooking,  (http://blog.ruhlman.com/) again:

Quote
Pasteurize, pasteurization: The process of heating a liquid - such as milk or fruit juices - to specific minimum temperatures for specific durations in order to kill pathogens.  The process not only ensures that liquid doesn't make anyone sick, it also serves as a preservative by killing those microbes responsible for a food's deterioration.  The reason cooked meat will keep longer than raw is because it's been, in a manner of speaking, pasteurized.

Quote
Homogenize: to mechanically combine two opposing liquids so that they are uniformly dispersed; milk is homogenized to prevent the fat from combining with itself and rising to the top.

I would suggest using pasteurized eggs in this case.  Homogenized eggs, by definition, have already had the yolks and whites blended, which may not be what you want as a substitute in every dish that uses uncooked eggs - there are a lot of times where you will want to whip up the egg whites separately from the yolks.

Of course, all of this can be avoided if you absolutely know for a fact that the raw eggs you are using are of top-notch quality and devoid of the nasties.  Don't know that for a fact?  Stick to pasteurized.

If you buy an HDTV with an internal digital (ATSC/QAM) tuner (which most new HDTVs have now; only older models may be lacking that VERY essential feature), you will need at least an indoor antenna to capture over-the-air digital signals, but $10 antennas from Wal-Mart do the job just fine. You don't need to spend big bucks on an "HDTV antenna."

If you have old rabbit ears from an old set that you can disconnect, those work OK, too. I used those for awhile until I bought something that was a little bit more attractive.

According to their web page (http://www.genghiscohen.com/restaurant.html), one of their "Special Original Favorites" is the Seafood Quartet, which is King Crab, Shrimp, Scallops, and Asparagus in a Black Bean Sauce.

Sounds yummers, but exactly when did Asparagus become a form of seafood?

Well, I'm off.  I need to get ANOTHER new faucet for my kitchen.  The one that I put in last week is just not right for the space.  Everytime I turn on the water, the handle hits the back of the counter, which is way too close to the handle (damn kitchen designer), so I can't turn the water on all the way.  My sister had a new faucet that might've worked, but that doesn't fit, either.  I went to The Home Depot yesterday and found a style that looks good and would fit perfectly, but they didn't have any in stock and they don't know when they will! :P So, now I'm going to check out Lowe's and the other local Home Depot to see what they have in stock (I want something NOW!).  If I can find one that fits, my sister would like the new one that I'm getting rid of (it's still brand new).  I hope Lowe's has something.

I have it on DVD but haven't watched it yet. I love me some Colin Firth.

We're back from birthday celebration with Greg's DB and DS and their spouses. We had pot roast, but not cooked in the usual way with coca-cola...

Now we may try and catch the 10PM showing of SWEENEY TODD.

I went to church this morning where the topic of conversation with DRs Laura and Sandra was DR TCB, fabric for a toga for DR Sandra, a large gold tassle  which wouldn't get in the way of her cocoanut bra, the Swedish Chef's hat (which will be part of the outfit) and my butt.  A highly religious experience, indeed!

I am flattered to be included in the religious discussion AND grateful that the discussion did not require me to wear the coconut bra.  Having never seen DR Kerry's butt, I can not comment on my inclusion in a discussion of said butt.

DR Sandra is watching her favorite tv show: the Magic Bullet Informercial.

She is puzzled why all those people  stayed overnight at Mick and Mimi's house. I say they all drank a little too much to drive legally the night before and slept on various sofas around the house. She is skeptical.

If you buy an HDTV with an internal digital (ATSC/QAM) tuner (which most new HDTVs have now; only older models may be lacking that VERY essential feature

For those of us who, of necessity, receive all TV inputs from a cable company (and require a set-top box for all but the very basic channels), why would such a tuner be essential - or even useful?

I think I saved big bucks buying unit without an internal tuner.

Good Evening!

Well... After calling around and ahead to a few places, I discovered that most places here are closed on Sunday's.  However, Marlowe's (http://www.marlowesmemphis.com/) was open tonight.  So... The food was very good - fried pickle spears, half a rack of ribs (dry rub with sauce on the side), turnip greens and corn fritters - and the prices were very reasonable.  (No room for dessert.)  However, best of all was the door-to-door service to and from my hotel...

...I'm still giggling from the whole experience. :)

Marlowe's has a "fleet" of five Pink Cadillac stretch limousines.  And it really is a cool service they offer to the out-of-towners: free limo service after 4:00 each day of the week from the area hotels.

When Richard and I returned from church and lunch in Cincinnati, our neighbors called across the street to tell us that their power was out and to let them know if ours was, too.  It was and had been for about an hour by then.  It was getting c-c-c-cold in our house.  A little over half an hour later, the power came back on.  Weird.

I can't wait for the tale to be told - after over 30 years of driving in the LA area, I have concluded that you can't get there from here (Melrose & Fairfax from Glendale) - and in under 45 minutes on a Sunday night (weekend return traffic hits the freeways starting at about 4 PM).

I use to often pick-up Woody at his work in Glendale and then attempt to drive to various LA locales - never did find a route that worked well.  Best shot is Glendale Blvd to Los Feliz to Western to Melrose then west - still about 30 minutes

They didn't, DR JRand.  I know this because that's about all of the show Richard and I could stand to watch.

Instead, we watched a DVD of Sinatra duets - clips from 1950s and '60s TV, with Ol' Blue Eyes singing with the likes of Dinah Shore, Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Shirley Jones, Lena Horne, Elvis, and so on.  The group of kids surrounding him during "High Hopes" looked like my 3rd grade class.

Richard commented on the contrast between the productions.  We also noticed how much cigarette smoking went on during musical numbers and how much non-PC humor there was (on the DVD, not the Grammys).

AFter dinner we ended up back at the rent theatre as the Vixter had not purchased a program and now regretted that oversight. They very kinldy let us wait in the lobby untitl the  doors opened  and since the stage door is inside the theater she got to watch most of the cast (including her favorite Declen Bennett who played Roger) come in for the evening show.  The doors opened, they let her buy her program  and then she persuaded me to walk up to Rockerfeller Center to check out the Nintendo store and then over Fifth for a quick walkthrough  the American Girl Place

Back from APPLAUSE.  I think it's the kind of flawed hit Encores should be revisiting as part of its repertoire, a part of Broadway history that is unlikely to get a full-scale Broadway revival.

Ms. Ebersole was fierce tonight, but still aparently under the weather and at only about 70% of her vocal capability, per a reliable estimator.

Speaking of Encores' APPLAUSE - When did Mario Cantone become such a (for want of a better expression) fine actor?  He was very good in VIOLET HOUR, but this performance was a gem.

What the f**k is it with the wind chill factor?  If it feels like minus five degrees, shouldn't we just call it minus five degrees?

From Wikipedia

There is a thermal boundary layer surrounding the skin which may be several millimetres thick. This boundary layer acts as an insulator. When it is cold and the wind is blowing, the air feels colder than it does when it is calm because the wind blows away the boundary layer. In a perfect calm, if free convection could be suppressed (as it is in microgravity), the boundary layer would be infinitely thick. Add a wind, and the only still air that remains would be the air in the immediate vicinity of some surface, like the skin. The stronger the wind, the thinner the layer. Because the outer layers of still air are blown off more easily than the ones closer to the skin, when it is nearly calm, a small increase in wind speed causes a much greater thinning of the boundary layer thickness than the same increase in wind speed when the wind is already strong.

Convective heat loss is really conduction through an insulating boundary layer. The insulation of the boundary layer depends on its thickness. When there is wind, the thermal resistance of the boundary layer is smaller, the heat loss is higher, and the temperature of the skin is closer to the air temperature. Humans do not sense the temperature of the air but the temperature of the skin. Because skin temperature is closer to the air temperature when it is windy, the wind causes it to feel colder.[1]

A wind-chill factor of 25° F (- 4° C) will not freeze water if the air temperature is 35° F (2° C). Water changes state according to the temperature of the body of the water. In this case, the water and air temperature are about the same — too high to freeze water.[2]

I want you to try prescription Ass-Effects!" :o And later, the voice-over says, "Ask your doctor if Ass-Effects is right for you."  And finally, "So call today and learn more about Ass-Effects."

;D

Has someone already posted this youtube clip of APPLAUSE's full title number on the Tony Awards show from way back, featuring Bonnie Franklin?

The rear male nudity (times three) during the OH CALCUTTA bit seems astonishing for prime time TV in the early 1970's.  It's even more explicit than I remembered.  Did this cause a stir at the time?

Do you honestly suggest that if the membership, on Tuesday, votes against ending the strike, that the strike is still over? I think not!

Do you also suggest that if the membership fails to ratify the contract, which their leadership simply "recommended", that the strike is over. I think not!

The strike is probably over, the membership will most likely ratify - but it is nota done deal - unless you know something the AP does not.

Here's what I know - I've been in this business for close to forty years.  I've watched the WGA and other unions strike and I know exactly how it works.  It IS a done deal, the membership WILL ratify and that's the end of it.  Just as the DGA two weeks ago had a deal IN PRINCIPAL and the ratification was a formality.  It's not "probably" over - it's over, it's done, and I don't know what else to say about it.  The AP prints what they're told and they're being spoon fed the extra dollop of drama the WGA so thrives on.  Tell you what - WHEN they ratify on Wednesday, you can come back and say, "Oh, I guess you WERE right."

I know I won't have to come back and say the same thing, although I would if I were wrong.  I'm not wrong, however, and everyone in the WGA knows it will be ratified on Wednesday.  The End.

You may be pedantic all you like, der B - it's perfectly fine.  Those who know, know.  You may come back on Wednesday and tell me I was correct.  That will be perfectly fine.  You see, I have many friends who are esteemed members of the WGA.  And the strike is over.  It will be ratified on Wednesday - a mere formality.  You may believe whatever makes you happy.  And I'm jiggy with that.
