Post by: bk on February 11, 2008, 12:25:00 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had variety and also the hollywood reporter, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently in a tappas/tapas/topless bar enjoying themselves as only the trendy cows do.

Comments on the notes:

Quote
In any case, I know tapas bars have been around for many, many years in Spain, but why have they suddenly become the hip and trendy thing in LA? Because it had become the hip and trendy thing in NY?

LA maybe just late to the party. The Algeria Tapas Bar opened on Pine Ave. in downtown Long Beach in the fall of 2001 and and has been going hot and heavy ever since. Since both Woody and I like to surf-and-nosh, the Tapas enviroment is a real treat.

Quote
I find it decidedly peculiar that they would raze office buildings built in 1962 and replace them with car dealerships, but that seems to be what happened.

In California, considerable chunks of municipal dollars come from their share of the Sales Tax. It is decidedly to a community's advantage to replace non-sales tax generating properties like office buildings with big revenue engines like car dealerships and big box stores. Community Redevelopment Agencies often use tax-dollars to lure enterprises like car dealerships into their corporate boundaries.

Redevelopment Zones also allow a municipality to capture a goodly chunk of real estate taxes that would other wise go to the state - the trick is that the taxes have to be on "new properties" - so it is to a community's financial advantage to tear down perfectly good structures (both commercial and residential) and replace them with more up-scale structures and pocket all the Real Estate Tax increment dollars. I think about 75% of the entire city of Long Beach is divided up between various Redevelopment Zones. The sales-tax sharing puts constant pressure on communities to replace non-retail commercial and low-value residential units with shopping plazas and strip malls; and the lure of Real Estate Increment tax dollars puts pressure on communities to replace low value housing with up-scale units. (This is also the reason why Planning Boards discourage the construction of "affordable housing" - better to require apartment structures with lots of indoor parking, lofty atriums with commissioned art works, and a maximum number of out door amenities like BBQ areas.)

k.d. lang's love, loss and longing just right for Valentine’s Day

On “Shadow and the Frame,” lang recognizes the passage of time and the frailty of our existence, but in a “Circle of Life” way:

“The promise of my prime
Fading on the vine
But fallen days indeed
Are the seeds of time.”

For fans who want a little something extra, there are different versions of the album. iTunes features four live bonus tracks, including “I Dream of Spring” as well as hits “Hallelujah,” “Wash Me Clean,” and “The Valley.” A deluxe packaging includes a cloth cover for the album, three photo cards, a 16-page booklet, four bonus tracks, and an interview with Lang.

Tapas Bars have sort of been trendy in L.A. for a while.  However, most "tapas" places in L.A. preferred to labeled as "small plates" places.  Of course, in NYC right now, instead of a place being labeled an "Italian Tapas" or "Greek Tapas" or "Indian Tapas", they're all starting to be called by their actual ethnic-snack names: stuzzi, mezze, etc.  I'm guessing L.A. will pick up the trend in another 10 years or so.  ;)
Title: Re:THE TAPPAS BAR
Post by: JoseSPiano on February 11, 2008, 04:40:19 AM
Oh... And then there's the continuing boom of "wine bars" and the food that accompanying said pours of wine.
Title: Re:THE TAPPAS BAR
Post by: JoseSPiano on February 11, 2008, 04:42:21 AM
Oh... And I still find some places cross-labeling themselves in order to clarify their style, more or less: "It's like Spanish (or Indian or Mediterranean) dim sum."
Title: Re:THE TAPPAS BAR
Post by: JoseSPiano on February 11, 2008, 04:48:31 AM
In any case... As for the Topic of the Day...

The restaurant trends that I don't like include:

-smaller and smaller tables (with big and bigger plates)
-tin ceilings and hard floors to "promote" noise level
-upping the price of "comfort food" just because they know people will buy it
-using Sriracha (Rooster Sauce) as a plate garnish on every plate - that can come as a surprise at times!
-daily specials only being recited by the server and not listed anywhere else
etc., etc., etc.

As for cuisine trends and gimmicks, well, it's all part of the fun of dining out.  If they're meant to last they will, if not, the place will shutter pretty quickly nowadays.

Sondheim's re-write of Weill's "The Saga of Jenny": The Saga of Lenny, written for Leonard Bernstein's 70th birthday bash here (http://youtube.com/watch?v=n6r5_bf_o5U&feature=related).

Thanks much! What a great way to find out that my corporate firewall of youtube has been disabled for now! I'd never seen that, and never read the parody lyrics... Holy toledo, the "picks a/shlimazel or a shiksa" line had me in stitches (can't believe that one got by the 1988 censors).

TOD:
Because of the whole "kosher" thing, I don't really get to sample trendy restaurants, and the food trends that filter down to my level tend to be the ones that have endured. Things that I never tire of, however:

* sushi - My one happy memory from my first job with a tyrannical boss was the short-lived restaurant down the block with a sushi bar (back in 93, this was a novelty in a kosher restaurant; nowadays, you can't open a kosher pizza jernt without a sushi menu). I was there frequently enough that the chef wouldn't let me order specifics; I was only allowed to state how much I wanted to spend, and he'd make up whatever was good that day. One memorable afternoon, I walked in, he looked at me, and just said "you want tuna." He then proceeded to pile the most heavenly, buttery, glistening tuna atop a bed of rice for me... I've since been told that this is more-or-less the "authentic" practice in asian restaurants (telling the chef what *you* want is somewhat insulting, since it implies that you know what's good better than he does)

* balsamic vinegar - unfortunately, almost all of the kosher varieties are of the "wine vinegar with a bit of caramel thrown in" style, but I can't get enough of how wonderfully the stuff works in places you'd never expect it (I've had a strawberry-balsamic dessert dish that was just magnificent, and I'm not the world's biggest strawberry fan)

I don't mind restaurant servers only reciting the daily specials, but I *do* mind ordering one, and finding out at the end of the meal that it was twice as expensive as anything else on the menu. Granted, I don't go out to save money (and higher end kosher restaurants in NYC are very expensive compared to similar non-kosher venues), but I'd like some warning about paying more for a single entree than my two companions' complete meals combined.

A friend had gotten what they call "Tapis Rouge" special tickets for Cirque du Soleil when it was on Randall's Island, and they served many many yummy appetizers in a special tent and we kept pronouncing the tickets "Tappas Rouge," assuming they were so called because of the yummy appetizers.  When I got home, Skip read the tag that we had to wear to enter the special tent and informed me that it was pronounced "Ta-pee Rouge" as in "Red Carpet" treatment, not "tappas" as in appetizers.

The last half hour or more of The Grammy Awards featured some nice things.....Eldar!!!!

And....

SPOILER I GUESS

HERBIE HANCOCK WON RECORD OF THE YEAR - OR ALBUM OF THE YEAR - or whatever one of the over 400 categories it was announced last.

Favorite moment Keely Smith and Kid Rock and Dave Koz, closely followed by Tina Turner.  The Doris tribute was subdued with a few lines and a few pictures and some nice applause which from some in the audience could be called "polite."  And of course Rhapsody in Blue.  Bocelli and Groban could have been a highlight, but Bocelli sounded really flat or at least off a tone or so....but it could be my ears.

BUT it was great to see ELDAR!!!!!

Jrand:  "Nothing gets older faster than the latest and newest and hippest things EVER" - what a wise and beautifully considered turn of phrase.

It may be a useful mantra for theater writers wondering whether to set their shows in "modern times" or choose a nebulous time in the past, perhaps.

May I chime in here and say that DH Richard and I had delightful dining experiences at 2 "small plate" restaurants when we were in DC last summer?  At the Jaleo location in Crystal City and at Zaytinya near the Convention Center.  What we liked was the ability to sample many different dishes without ordering a lot of anything.

I agree....I think Madame X (as Mr BK wrote) is one of Lana Turner's best performances...if not her best.

I remember a Pauline Kael review that called it old fashioned and accused Turner of being not Madame X but Brand X, a product to be sold.  Well Kael's writings aren't much in demand....and Turner still sells DVD's to bed sure.

I know there was a lot of controversy around the production, and of course Constance Bennett died between shooting and the release of the film.....along with a snide comment by her agent Sue Mengers.....but even if the color is not well done, I am glad it is on it's way to me.

Good morning, all! Unless the Institute finally pays us today or the damned cabaret lady comes through I am about as overdrawn as a body can get and not thrilled about any of it.  I hate this crap.  I could use some financial vibes today.

DR vixmom, I'm really happy the vister loved RENT; I'm quite fond of the show as well.  I truly am sorry I missed you all on Saturday but I did get a good deal of needed rest.  My physical health is much better but the financial strain is not doing a thing for my mental health.

DR MBarnum, when was it that you were here last? There were no bedbugs then so I'm trying to figure out the timeline.

I spent most of the evening last night watching more episodes of GIRLFRIENDS. I think the problem for me is that I don't like any of the leading female characters. The actresses are fine with what they're given, but I find all four of the female characters and their male friend very off-putting. So, the set won't be getting a very positive review from me. It's hard to find things funny about characters you dislike.

Last night, DR der Brucer opined:

"For those of us who, of necessity, receive all TV inputs from a cable company (and require a set-top box for all but the very basic channels), why would such a tuner be essential - or even useful?

I think I saved big bucks buying unit without an internal tuner."

That's fine for you. For someone like me that often has three or four shows on at the same time and a DVR that can only record two shows at once, having a digital tuner is a godsend. I can watch a show over the air in HD while the cable DVR picks up two others.

There are other people who don't have access to cable or who don't want to upgrade to digital HD boxes, and with a digital tuner in their TV, they can have HD for free saving them money.

And did you know that with a QAM tuner, you can do away with the digital settop box and use the analog cable connection only. The QAM tuner pulls in all the unscrambled HDTV signals. The TV that I have now has both a digital tuner (ATSC) and a QAM tuner, so I can choose HDTV from multiple sources. Over-the-air signals contain far less compression and can be much sharper and more detailed than the (of necessity) heavily compressed signals that cable and dish customers must use.

One other thing. Due to atmospheric interference for the past two or three weeks, the cable service has been having massive problems with the CBS affiliate;s signals  here. The cable transmissions were heavily pixilated and distorted. I could watch the CBS affiliate over the air with ZERO interference.

Sorry about omitting GOSSIP GIRL from the list. It was there, and I edited it out. I'll go look it back up in a minute and post what I find.

BIG SHOTS is likely over with for good. Sorry for those of you who are fans. Like BIONIC WOMAN, the show started with good ratings and every week saw an erosion. BIG SHOTS had one of the highest rated shows on TV as a lead-in, and was losing 65% of the audience at 10, so don't expect to see it back. I suspect that's why it was left off that list.

Dear Esteemed BK: Do I really have to bitch-slap you?

You've fallen into the trap of thinking that trends start in NYC or LA.  They do not.  They start elsewhere, gain a foothold somewhere in the U. S. of A., and then get imported to NYC or LA, where the hip and trendy people go "oooh!" and "aaah!" and declare whatever it is that they have "discovered" is now as hip and trendy as they are.

(And, it should be noted, just as disposable as they are, which is why they are always so desperate to find something new to declare as hip and trendy, to make sure that they remain as hip and trendy as what they have declared hip and trendy.)

When Der Brucer and I were in Cincinatti, of all places, attending a political confrontation convention well over a decade ago, there were tapas bars in that small city.  I kid you not.  In fact, I wish we had visited one or two while we were there - as a rule, food in Cincinatti is wretched, and that is putting it mildly.  Having a number of small wretched plates might have been better on the ol' tumtum than the large wretched plates we encountered instead.  Or, at least, we could have had some nice drinkies along with the tapas, to help us ignore all the wretch.

And the first time Der B and I met our very own DR Jose (for a performance of Stephen Schwartz's Children of Eden at the Ford Theater in Washington D. C. - Jose was performing, and we brought him pale green roses), he led us after the show to a restaurant called Jaleo (http://www.jaleo.com/), where chef Jose Andres sealed his reputation as far back as 1993 by serving tapas.  (Typical of our own DR Jose, the kind of tapas he was interested in at that point of the evening was the desserts - our own DR Jose is highly consistant in that manner.)

So, there you've got der Brucer and myself encountering tapas twice before it was even mentioned in NYC or LA.

If there is a problem with tapas here in the U. S. of A. it comes from how tapas is served in Spain, as opposed to how it is served here.  Dinner in Espania is served late - nine o'clock in the evening is considered early.  So, naturally, with all those hours between when people get off from work and when dinner is served, there's a good chance of people getting a bit peckish, and wanting something to snack on.

The solution is to go bar-hopping.  But, instead of simply stopping at a bar for a drink, and then hopping to the next bar for a drink, the pleasant people of Spain will have a tapas at one bar, then move on and have a different tapas at the next bar.  Why move from bar to bar?  Because each bar specializes in the different kinds of tapas.  One bar may have some amazing olives, for instance.  The next will be known for it's coca de recapte (flatbread with roasted eggplant and peppers).  A third, perhaps, will have it's croquetes de pollastre i pernil high on the list (that's chicken and ham croquettes, by the way).  Or gambes a la planxa (griddled shrimp with garlic and parsley).

(Anthony Bourdain's first television series, A Cook's Tour, 2001, included an episode where he accompanied some lovely women searching out tapas in San Sebastian, and the women tapased him under the table.)

But, here in the U. S. of A., the owners of the restaurants and bars do not want you to hop from place to place.  They want you to stay, and give them all of your money.  The result is that our bars and restaurants have to diversify in their tapas, serving a large variety and specializing in none.  A pity.  Also a pity is how we Americans do not have a break between tapas (and drinkies) like the Spaniards do, that respite that comes from walking from tapas bar to tapas bar, breathing in some fresh air and getting the blood pumping through our veins.

Now, here's something interesting: in Tokyo and other Japanese cities, a similar sort of thing takes place.  They have restaurants that specialize in specific kinds of dishes, such as sushi or gyoza or skewered meats or whatever.  Similar idea as to what goes on in Spain, only with soy sauce instead of olive oil.  You want trendy?  Just wait!  We've already got the sushi part - the rest is just waiting in the wings!

Dear DR MBarnum:  Exactly where are you staying in Glendale?  The humungous mall you've mentioned would be the Glendale Galleria, which is indeed largish, particularly for a mall plopped down in the middle of a city, and is a place I'm fairly familiar with from the days when I worked in Glendale.  Are you, perhaps, staying at a motel somewhere towards the south end of the mall, between Brand Blvd. and Central?

If so, you're in walking distance of a number of very nice places to eat on Brand.

I have no doubt that tappas bars started small and elsewhere - but it's just amusing to see the proliferation of them now - I was looking at one of those free, big glossy magazines they have lying around and on every page there were four tappas bars advertised, most on Ventura Blvd.   And I've seen the wine bars coming.  And then there's that "new" hip and trendy appetizer edamamie or whatever the HELL it's called, that soybean thing - someone was having that at Pig n Whistle last week - newly added to the menu, and I'm told newly added to many, many menus here in LA.  Eight bucks for some soy beans - amazing, ain't it?  We all know the word chipotle has existed for years, but honestly, when did it exist on EVERY SINGLE MENU in every restaurant.

Well, I don't know about the trendy L.A. movement, but edamame has been a staple in Chinese cuisine for thousands of years.  Edamame is sold in all the grocery stores locally...and has been for a long time.  It's on all the Chinese restaurant menus.  I've seen it on a dim sum menu, too, but I don't know if it's in the same "appetizer"category as what you've found in L.A. eateries.  Basically, it's a versatile veggie cooked or raw (in salads).

Blame New Mexico for chipotle's rise to trendy status, IMO.  I was inundated with chipotle in Santa Fe back in the summer of 2000.  It was good, too!

But you can also look to the ever-expanding/affluent Latino population to explain why it's taken hold so firmly in L.A., as well.

Like der Brucer mentioned, there's a tapas bar in Long Beach, was there well before we moved more than four years ago.  Wine bars, yep, had 'em in Long Beach before we moved (Sony Bono's older daughter, Christy, featured one at her first restaurant on Broadway - we went to a few political fundraisers there).  Edamame?  Had 'em at Chinese restaurants in Long Beach before we moved.   And chipotle is old hat in Long Beach.

BK, ol' fellow, you need to drive a little further south more often.  Long Beach is the hippest long before the hip start hoppin'.

And the coffee trend started in the Pacific Northwest.  Long before we started seeing coffee bars pop up here and across the country, they proliferated in  cities like Seattle.  We have "Peet's" locally...and the guy who started "Starbucks" got his learning from working for "Peet's".

Quote
...Last night, my father brought over some steaks to grill, so I made the above compound butter—a maitre d butter with some espelette pepper thrown in for some zing as well as minced shallot.  If I’d had chipotles in adobo sauce, I’d have used those. ...

As for tapas bars, we've had one in my 'hood for twelve years or so. I've never been in it. It replaced a really nice restaurant whose name just escaped me--Tavola, that's it! Some clever business people thought they'd create a restaurant with great food, but without the high prices, and Tavola was the result. I was not happy when Tavola closed. As for restaurant preferences, I concur with many of Jose's points. I do not like noisy restaurants. Last year for my birthday a friend took me to dinner at a very expensive restaurant. The food was good, but not great, the tables were small and shoved tightly together, and it was noisy, noisy, noisy. I'd much prefer an inexpensive meal with good food and good company.

I've never been too embarrased to ask, "And how much is that?"

I have done all the stuff I needed to do for tonight's production meeting, as well as done some work at the piano.

This drive to this theater is probably going to be a bit of a slog at times - it's almost an hour drive and that's with NO traffic.  WITH traffic they say up to two-and-a-half hours.  Oy and vey.  I'll head out there at five today, but I think when we're actually in rehearsal I'll leave at three-thirty or four to try to avoid the traffic, then just have a leisurely meal pre rehearsal.

That's fine for you "out in the air" boys. Those of us who dwell in the "holler" have no access to over the air TV, satellite TV, or even cell-phones! Our Cable company encodes all but the very basic channels, so a set-top box is a must (and it is part of the DVR).

Who knew sugar dust was flammable??!!??

Well, to pick a nit - sugar dust is not flammable, it can not sustain a flame from a low temperature ignition source like a match; like many other dusts (coal, grain, pollen, flour, powered milk), it is, however, capable of combustion if ignited under pressure - it can also self-ignite "spontaneous combustion".

Liquid gasoline can burn, but only gasoline vapor under pressure can explosively combust. (We shan't get into Stoichiometry.)

But you are definitly wise to worry about the "fairy dust" - we know it can flame!

Yes, DR Jeanne - it is surprisingly difficult to find a quiet restaurant where you can just talk.

Last week, I went out to eat with some friends who are on the shy side but I thought should get to know each other, so I purposely picked a decent (but not great) place where I knew the service was lousy, and we'd be left alone.  It worked beautifully (although it did take some doings to get refills and the check).

There's a great sliver of a place in Chelsea that opened recently, El Quinto Pino (http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/el-quinto-pino/).  It's set up like a "traditional" tapas bar - no seating.  Well, there are bar stools, but no sit-down tables.  It is primarily a bar, but they have a small selection of tapas - all quite good.  -However, they've become famous for their cross-culture creation: uni (sea urchin roe) panini(!!!).

Valentine's Day is like herpes: just when you think its gone for good, it rears its ugly head once more. No wonder some people prefer to call it VD.

Yes, DR Jeanne - it is surprisingly difficult to find a quiet restaurant where you can just talk.

Or see!  I've been to too many restaurants (and not even super fancy restaurants) where they turn the lights down so low, you can barely see what you're eating. :P

CAREFUL:  Singing the song "Butt Alive" can have unintended Ass-Effects(TM).

My DH and I saw that commercial last night. I was looking at him to see if the humor of it was registering with him. He turned and looked at me with an "am I hearing that right?" look and we both started laughing.

Well.....Constance Bennett through Ms Sue Mengers drove a hard bargain with producer Ross Hunter who wanted her badly for the role of the Mother in MADAME X.  Bennett was married to an Air Force Brigadier General and hadn't made a film in a few years, preferring to play poker and be a society matron.

One thing she continued to demand was that her name be in a box on all advertising.  Negotiations continued while Bennett flew off to Switzerland to get some plastic surgery - she had been deathly afraid of doing it before, but felt a return to the big screen demanded it.

Billing was set at her being 4th billed after the title, and special "Constance Bennett as Estelle" on screen (Keir Dullea also received the same billing ",,,,,as Clay, Jr."

The plastic surgery had some complications and Constance Bennett died before the film was released (critics wrote that when John Forsythe greeted her as "Mother" in her first scene, there were gasps in the audience at her visage).

At her funeral, Sue Mengers was among those in attendance.  As the service began, she was heard to remark:  "Well, Connie finally got her box."

The bonus feature on the last disc in the set ironically was the producer and director of those wedding episodes bragging about how great they thought they were, how bold they thought they had been for a comedy series. Poor deluded fools thinking their work was important just because it was bitching and sniping from one character to another for an hour.

I am not a fan of confrontational comedy.

And the chocolate-covered grapes?

Alas, no chocolate-covered grapes at the airport kiosks.  Ah, well.  I think I'm going to call them tomorrow to see if they're doing mail order on them - or their chocolate covered strawberries raspberries.  I know they recently got Kosher certification - would that have anything to do with not carrying them anymore?

Oh good grief, they want to send a new motherboard and a technician to replace it just in case a new cord doesn't work. I'm trying to convince them that I'm willing to just get a new cord and if that doesn't work I'll call back. I do not want to fix the parts of the computer that aren't broken!!!

DR Cillaliz - Go to E-Bay. Do a search for your computer model and power cord. Then pay the $10 for it.  :)

*That's what I did for my Compaq - so much quicker and cheaper than dealing with their customer service.

Yeah, I may do that to have one, but I think I'll let the service tech bring me one for nothing. And, if it really is the motherboard, I may as well get it replaced before my warranty expires.

Quote
BLACKBERRY SERVICE RESTORED AFTER 3-HOUR NATIONWIDE OUTAGE

Stuart Gold, a customer who says he gets 1,000 e-mails a day as director of field marketing for Web analytics company Omniture Inc., worked on his laptop most of Monday after his BlackBerry went on the blink.
Although Gold said he thought last year's outage gave him a needed break from work, Monday's frayed his last nerve.

"I cannot believe this happened again," he said as he got off a plane. "I'm on the road 300 days a year. My entire life is in my BlackBerry — my family life, my professional life, my emotional life, everything. ...

They're not allowed to do this to me."

Gives new meaning to "GET A LIFE!"

I had my first taste of the Ventura/101 freeway today...it scared me and nobody knew what it meant when I used my turn signal...it is like that blinking light on my automobile caused widespread panic each time I used it.

Went all the way from Glendale to Westlake Village, which is a looooooooooong ways a way. Traffic was fast and furious until I reached Calabasas....then I pretty much had the freeway to myself.

I spent 6 hours sorting through cabinets and boxes of movie stills at Baseball Cards and Movie Collectibles Store in Westlake Village.

After buying many, many movie stills for my upcoming magazine interviews I hopped back onto the freeway and dropped off in Studio City where I had a lovely dinner at Good Earth on Ventura Blvd, dinning with my interviewee former child actor Scotty Morrow and his buddy Mark, who I had met before on my previous trip down here. Scott and Mark a lots of fun and I had a great time. I will see them both, along with Marks friend Sherill, on Saturday for dinner and possible at the Ray Courts Show.

After dinner I drove over to Hollywood and stopped in at Amoeba Records where I planned to trade off a bunch of DVDs and CDs (as I did last time I was down). Well, they don't take trade after 9pm...so I just shopped. Will try again later this week perhaps...I saw plenty of items I still would like to get with my trade-ins.

Now to catch up on the posts.

Am now caught up with today's posts...as for the topics discussed today...I must get me those TAMMY movies...

...I saw a Bollywood version of MADAME X, it was highly entertaining...

I don't mind if something is hip or trendy...and if it remains popular then it eventually becomes classic...if I like then I enjoy it, if not then I don't pay much attention to it.

I am sleepy now. Goodnight.

Thank you. The chickens told us it was nice over here.

Most of us are. Me, however, you will not like: I think Carson's Silent Spring was scientifically faulty propaganda.
I also support the development and proliferation of genetically modified foods.

So, ignore me, and enjoy the board.
