Title: THE EMPTY HEAD
Post by: bk on February 02, 2004, 12:05:35 AM
Well, you've scoured the notes, you've pored over the notes, you've read the notes from top to bottom, so you know what to do and I say when one knows what to do one should do it and do it repeatedly.

Swing: Everything as played by the genius of the Saxophone - Mr Freddy Gardner: - eg. I'm In The Mood For Love, I Only Have Eyes For You, These Foolish Things, Stardust and Japanese Sandman.

Plus: Artie Shaw's "Begin The Beguine", Glenn Miller's "Moonlight Serenade", Harry James with Helen Forest "I've Heard That Song Before" and  of course all those wonderful Benny Goodman tunes with Peggy Lee vocals.

I love many of the same songs as Tomovoz.  I also love "Let's Dance," "Skyliner," "Cherokee."  There are so many from that period that I like.  So many great vocalists, too.

Cake for Ben-- but I want to know what kind.

DRLaura, we'll be having Oreo cake soon.

Artie Shaw's (and just about everybody else's) version of "Moonglow" is tops with me.   Benny Goodman's version of "Don't Be That Way" is pretty swell too.

I'm listening to Donald's Minskoff show right now as I begin my birthday celebration. Thanks for the good wishes. Besides Miss Stritch and me, it's also the birthdate of Burton Lane, Liz Smith and Farrah Fawcett.

We will have cake this evening. Don't know what but something with chocolate in it. I'll let you know later.

I think one of my favorite tunes is Benny Goodman's Swing, Swing, Swing. I also love Moonlight Seranade (what a romantic number). There are a couple of shows on BBC (oh, no, not again) that focus on Big Band and Swing Music. One is on BBC Radio Wales and it's called String of Pearls.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/radiowales/shows/stringofpearls.shtml

Another is Stacy Kent's show on BBC Radio 2

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/bigband/

Malcolm Laycock also has an excellent show on BBC Radio 2

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/laycock/

Off to work. No, I'm not taking the day off, too busy for that, but I will work s  l  o  w  l  y and I will check in often on this special natal day.

I like just about anything sung by The Andrews Sisters.  Regarding "Swing, Swing, Swing", is it a law that every compilation musical (from FOSSEE to SWING and everything else in between) has to use it for a big production number?  It is a great song, but enough is enough.

Fun "At Last" fact: It was originally used in SUN VALLEY SERENADE and was cut out of the film because it was decided that the film had TOO MANY potential hit songs (notably "Chattanooga Choo-Choo"), so it was put into ORCHESTRA WIVES the following year. Both times it was 'sung' by the delicious Lynn Bari (dubbed by Pat Friday). You can still hear a bit of 'At Last' in the medley in the finale skating number of SUN VALLEY.

There are literally dozens od Swing songs I adore, but I need more coffee first to jog them all into order...

Interesting background on one of my favorites from the era, "I'll Never Smile Again":

"The song was written by a young Canadian songwriter, Ruth Lowe. The lyrics came from her heart - she had been married only a year when her husband died suddenly during a routine operation. Devastated, Ruth moved back to her home in Toronto. After telling her sister that she'd never smile again without him, she sat down one night to write a song that expressed her sorrow.

The result was a song that not only launched Frank Sinatra's career, but helped a nation get through the grief and loss of WWII.

Now, the fact that I'll Never Smile Again was written by a Canadian woman is not exactly obscure music trivia. However, few people know that a year before Dorsey and Sinatra got their hands on it, I'll Never Smile Again was heard by thousands of Canadians tuned into CBC Radio.

As far as Lost & Found Sound can tell, there's only one copy of this 1939 broadcast, and it belongs to Ruth Lowe's son, Tom Sandler. He came across the 78 RPM disc in a box of his mother's memorabilia after she died in 1981. This version was arranged by Percy Faith for his CBC program Music by Faith."

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR Ben!!!!!!!!!

DR Charlie beat me to it - Glenn Miller is far and away my favorite big band leader and his orchestra's rendition of "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" is my all-time favorite song from the war years. One of the first CDs I bought when I made the switchover from LP to CD was a Glenn Miller CD that had 40 of his hits in their original recordings. May have been mono sound, but I played that thing into the ground.

I have to agree about the Andrews Sisters stuff during the war years, too. I loved their bounce and their fun vocals. I also thought that OVER HERE! the Broadway musical built around Patti and Maxene, was deserving of the Best Musical Tony the year it was nominated. (RAISIN won that year. SEESAW was the other nominee. I liked it a lot, but it seemed such a huge show for such a tiny little story. I felt the same way about MISS SAIGON except SEESAW has a better score.)

Wiarton Willie sees a long winter
Martin O'Malley & Ruby Buiza, CBC News Online | February 2, 2004

Wiarton Willie

On Monday, February 2, a white groundhog was rudely awakened in Wiarton, Ontario and at eight o'clock he looked around, saw his shadow, which according to Groundhog lore, means there will be six more weeks of winter.

In Nova Scotia, however, a groundhog named Shubenacadie Sam didn't see his shadow, which means for Nova Scotians, spring is just around the corner. For those who want to follow this through, Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil also saw his shadow, which means six more weeks of winter.

Wiarton Willie didn't take long to make his forecast. "He did a quick turn there, and I think it's because he did see his shadow and we have six more weeks of winter," said Carl Noble, mayor of South Bruce Peninsula.

It's always been a pack of lies, of course, but it's fun, and we need fun if we are to survive another Canadian February.

Groundhog Day was inspired by an old Scottish couplet:
"If Candlemas Day is bright and clear/ There'll be two winters in the year."

How groundhogs got a reputation for predicting weather patterns is a mystery, because they are not the least bit interested in their shadows or the number of winter weeks remaining. The only reason they come out of hibernation is for food and sex.

The original Wiarton Willie, an albino groundhog said to be 22 years old, died during hibernation during the winter of 1998-99. The good burghers of Wiarton discovered this to their horror just before Groundhog Day 1999.

Willie's death made headlines around the world.

On Groundhog Day, they put Wiarton Willie face-up in a small pine casket, bright pennies over his eyes, paws clutching a raw carrot. But it was a fake! Turns out the real Wiarton Willie was so disgustingly decomposed he couldn't be put on display, so they found a stuffed facsimile and laid it in the casket.

"We didn't try to hide the fact that he was stuffed," said Tom Ashman of Wiarton Willie's publicity team. "If the media had been doing their job they would have seen the stitches on the belly."

But, why fake it?

"People needed closure," Ashman explained.

Groundhogs are woodchucks, members of the squirrel family, marmots, sometimes called "pig-whistles." They are not the sharpest knives in the drawer. When nervous, they emit a high-pitched squeal, which might as well be an embossed dinner invitation to predators who follow the squeal until they find and eat the groundhog.

So how did they gain a reputation for predicting weather? Fact is, they aren't very good at it. The people of Wiarton insist their Willie was accurate 90 per cent of the time, but what do you expect them to say when the Groundhog Festival attracts 20,000 free-spending tourists to the town every February? Scientific studies show groundhogs are accurate only 37 per cent of the time, which means you'd do better flipping one of the pennies that covered ol' Wiarton Willie's eyes.

Loyalists insist that Wiarton Willie possessed an uncanny ability to predict because he was born exactly on the 45th parallel, midway between the Equator and the North Pole. Wiarton is a pretty town of 2,300 on the Bruce Peninsula between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

The legend of Willie Wiarton began in 1956, with many groundhogs taking their star turn as Willie.

Other jurisdictions have their favourite winter-predicting groundhogs, the second most famous - after Wiarton Willie - being Punxsutawney Phil of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. There is a Brandon Bob in Manitoba, a Staten Island Chuck in New York, a Balzac Billy in Alberta, and a Gary the Groundhog in Kleinburg, Ontario.

Wiarton Willie's successor is Wee Willie, another albino groundhog. Actually there are two Wee Willies - Wee Willie and Wee Willie-2 - just to be safe. An Ottawa man captured them after Wiarton Willie died. He sent them to Wiarton for the big show.

And a big show it is, with hockey tournaments, curling bonspiels, dances, parades, pancake breakfasts, a Monte Carlo Night, a dart tournament, snooker tournament, horse-drawn sleigh rides, a mammoth fish fry and a circus.

Enough to make a groundhog squeal. Oops.

With the addition of the three titles above, April has enough DVDs coming out to break all DRs.  Also in April are 5 Judy Garland films, 2 Sondheims (Angela/George in SWEENY TODD and "The Last of Shelia") and one or two others.

I just read that the producers of BOY FROM OZ are considering Ricky Martin to take over after Hugh Jackman's contract is up.  No comment from me is needed.

Good Afternoon!

-Well, I didn't get up as early as I had planned last night, but I have already had a pretty productive day - and I've only been up for about 2 1/2 hours!  I got some paperwork together to mail off; walked to my mechanic to explain my "possessed" car; walked to the post office to mail the paperwork; walked to the bank to take care of some business; walked through the grocery store just to scout out this week's specials; walked to McD's to get a Cobb Salad for lunch; walked to the local coffee roaster/shop (LOVE the smell in that place!) for a nice cup of coffee; then walked back home... Had lunch, checking the e-mail, and now HHW...  I may even venture out later to get my hair cut -I'm about a week overdue right now.

As for WWII songs - I've always loved "Swing, Swing, Swing" too!  I remember hearing it for the first time on a Boston Pops broadcast with Buddy Rich if I recall correctly - the drum solo was incredible.  Then I just kept hearing it in various other places - TV shows, radio shows, commercials, and even our high school drill team used it for one of their routines.  I always lamented that it never sounded the same on the piano.

Other songs - "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry", "Saturday Night Is The Loneliest Night of the Week", "I'll Never Smile Again" (thanks for the history lesson on this one!), "I Don't Want to Walk Without You, Baby"... Hmm.. Maybe I'll put on Judy Kuhn's Jule Styne album today...

And I remember analyzing the horn/saxophone voicings in Glenn Miller's "Moonlight Serenade" for a project I was working on.  And it's amazing how if just one of the tones is altered or revoiced, it totally affects the sound of the piece - well, at least moreso than I thought it would.

RE:  Justin and Janet (sounds like a tabloid headline)

The newsradio station, I was listening to this morning, was reading last week's press release (apparently from AOL and MTV) concerning the Super Bowl Halftime Show.  After naming the performers who would be taking part, the release ends by saying,  "to watch for the special surprise at the end of the show.

More about Ruth (I'll Never Smile Again) Lowe:

In the years following "I'll Never Smile Again" Lowe composed many other songs, including another Sinatra favourite, "Put Your Dreams Away", which was played at his funeral in 1998. Able to put her loss behind her, Lowe married for a second time in 1945, this time to Nathan Sandler. From this union two sons (Tommy and Stephen) were born. Ms. Lowe died on January 24, 1981.

I’m back from Bethesda.  I’m happy to say the weather, though very cold & windy, stayed clear.  My friend and I enjoyed our trip to the Botanical gardens where it was nice and warm.

While I was gone Keith entertained himself on the computer and checked out the following site for unclaimed money:  https://scoweb.sco.ca.gov
He found money for my Dad, sister, niece, his brother, my ex-brother in-law, our son’s girlfriend and her sister.  I highly suggest everyone check out this site, you never know.

DRLaura, my deepest sympathy, I was greatly saddened to read you lost Roxie.  I know how difficult and painful this is for you.  :(

Panni you received your Green Card!!  Now you can relax.  Congratulations.

I only scanned the first page yesterday, sorry if I missed commenting on an important event.

I see a new member.  Welcome CharlieToft.   :)

Dan-in-Toronto thanks for the history lesson on “I’ll Never Smile Again”.  I love WWII songs.

“I’ll be Seeing You”

“When the Lights Go On Again” (All Over the World)

“Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”

“I Don’t Want to Walk Without You”

“I’ll Get By”

“Comin’ In On a Wing and a Prayer”

“It’s Been a Long, Long Time”

“Till Then”

“Don’t Get Around Much Anymore”

“I’ll Walk Alone”

And my absolute favorite, “The White Cliffs of Dover”

There are more but I’m stopping now.

WEL-

A little correction on your assessment of DIARY OF ANNE FRANK. The DVD that was just released ends with OTTO FRANK back in the attic with the retelling of how he found out how everyone died and Anne's voice saying 'I believe everyone is good at heart" and Otto saying " 'She puts me to shame"
Title: Re:THE EMPTY HEAD
Post by: Matt H. on February 02, 2004, 01:42:40 PM
I meant to comment on THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK. I agree that George Stevens became his own worst enemy as his films after A PLACE IN THE SUN become more and more ponderous. I'm not one of those people who thinks GIANT is a great film (I know I'm in the minority). I think it's too long and slow, but when you have two relative ciphers as the young leads, Millie Perkins and Richard Beymer, you know you're in for a long afternoon. I know Stevens tried to get Audrey Hepburn for the film (she played young pretty convincingly that same year in THE NUN'S STORY so she might could have pulled it off), and that Millie Perkins was far from his first choice. I think Anthony Perkins might have been the right idea for Peter, but I guess he was busy with FEAR STRIKES OUT.

Yes, George, Sondheim is supposedly working on GROUNDHOG DAY. But he is also working on finishing up some songs for the Nathan Lane THE FROGS for this summer.

Another good swing-era song that makes me jitterbug on the gym treadmill: "Milkman, Keep Those Bottles Quiet". Also, anything Betty Hutton.  And Dortothy Lamour's "Injun Gal Heap Hep" is another song that once heard, is never forgotten.

According to Playbill.com, Gypsy Revival to Close Feb. 28 (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/84157.html).  The article says:

According to a statement, "The producers stated that the current extreme weather conditions in New York, which have caused an industry-wide decline in ticket sales, contributed to the decision to close the production." If the box office shows a marked improvement, however, the producers may extend the Gypsy run. (The producers of Never Gonna Dance also announced Feb. 2 that that show would close prematurely on Feb. 15, also citing the poor weather.)

As far as swing numbers, the ones that I can think of are ones that have already been mentioned...unless I look when I get home tonight.  Anyway, here they are:

"Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive"
"Bob-White"
"Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy"
"I Don’t Want to Walk Without You"
"In the Mood"
"Sing, Sing, Sing (as far as I know, I've never heard of "Swing, Swing, Swing" unless it's the same music but with lyrics)
"Skylark" (especially the way Dianne Reeves sang it live when I ushered for her concert on Saturday...incredible...although she doesn't do it in the style of the period)

I love I'll Be Seeing You
          In the Mood
And, although it is a little early, or a little late, I would have to include I'll Be Home for Christmas

I played the grandfather in the play A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square and I got to sing several wonderful old WWII songs, including White Cliffs of Dover.

It's time for a new dance-

I GOT MY CELL PHONE BACK DANCE!!!

Whew!

After getting a call from another dispatcher and driver earlier this afternoon, I kindly asked if they could just bring my phone by whenever they happened to be in my neighborhood anytime today - or tomorrow if necessary.  Well, I got a call around 2:30, and the cab driver said she would bring it over this afternoon.  Well, she came by, and called my home phone and asked if I could come outside.  So, I step to the window of the cab, and she's holding out a cell phone... In a leather case... My phone doesn't have a leather case... AAGHH!!... So, she starts digging through the compartment betweent he front seats... And then holds up another phone, "So, is it this one?"  YES!!  WHEW!

I GOT MY CELL PHONE BACK DANCE!!!

-And who knew that a cell phone could absorb so much car air freshener smell? ;-)

-And isn't it kind of sad that I'm so relieved to get my cell phone back?  Especially when I'm waiting on word on my car repair(s) - I should have a call from the shop tomorrow morning... And I've decided that if it's something major that will cost some major money, I may just sell it to them for parts and scrap.

On the bright side of things, I haven't been online too much - or as much - today since I wanted to keep my land-line free.

Well, time for me to get ready for dinner!  It's 1/2 price burger and quiche night at Strawberry St. Cafe!  They don't serve burgers and quiche together, but I guess you could order both... heck, they'd be 1/2 price, so... hmmm... lunch tomorrow? ;-)

Oh, and regarding Mr. Timberlake and Ms. Jackson... If it was a "wardrobe malfunction", how was the "wardrobe" supposed to function in the first place then?  Was her whole top supposed to come off instead?

To answer some questions from Jose who posted after I went to bed
Thanks DR Michael Shayne for the Universal Pics.  They are bringing back many fond memories of my audition tour.  And I didn't realize you were staying "on campus" at the Royal Pacific.  Nice hotel, definitely built for the business and convention business, but still a nice hotel.  -It's just kind of funny that the really nice hotel on campus down there is the Hard Rock Hotel - oh, and the Portofino is quite nice too.

I stayed at the Portofino last year and between the two I liked the Portofino better. They have a wonderful Italian restaurant. I so do enjoy staying onsite because you can get in the express land and bypass the long lines. It is soooooo worth it.

Were you able to catch the torch lighting ceremony around the pool?

No it was pouring rain so it was moved indoors

And did they leave interesting "mints" on your pillow?

No and I was very disappointed. The bed wasn't even turned.

I got a few kitchen magnets, a lei, and a shell filled with potpourri.  Frankly, I would have preferred chocolates.

Not even that and worse of all I didn't get a lei on my birthday..

So, did you catch the Universal Monsters Live show?    Too bad they don't run the Spiderman Live show down there... it's trash, but fun trash.  And the "transformation" of Peter Parker is fun... and actually quite sexy.

I skipped the monster show. A lot more interesting things to do.
No transformation of Peter Parker in Orlando.

Does With A Song In My Heart count as WWII?

Well, I would have thought so - Jane Froman sang it in her WWII USO shows; however, when I looked up the movie on IMDB I discovered:

"WITH A SONG IN MY HEART"
Written by Richard Rodgers (1929)
Lyrics by Lorenz Hart
Sung offscreen by Jane Froman
Reprised by Susan Hayward (voice dubbed by Froman) and Richard Allan

dere Brucer (who while searching found another WWII song favorite:

Chickery Chick
Sammy Kaye (#1 in 1945)
- words by Sylvia Dee, music by Sidney Lippman

Once there lived a chicken who would say "chick-chick"
"Chick-chick" all day
Soon that chick got sick and tired of just "chick-chick"
So one morning he started to say:

"Chickery chick, cha-la, cha-la
Check-a-la romey in a bananika
Bollika, wollika, can't you see
Chickery chick is me?"

Every time you're sick an tired of just the same old thing
Sayin' just the same old words all day
Be just like the chicken who found something new to sing
Open up your mouth and start to say
Oh!

"Chickery chick, cha-la, cha-la
Check-a-la romey in a bananika
Bollika, wollika, can't you see
Chickery chick is me?"

It was one of the first sonds I learned to sing and it drove my folks banaika!

It does seem a strange obcession, particularly since it's restricted to the females of our species.

Making it stranger still is how so many in our (western) society insist that for the beefcake shots the men shave their hair off of their bared chests, simulating the hairlessness of our women.  Go figure!

Major news - five years ago:

TORONTO, Feb 3, 1999 (Reuters) - Canada's grief over the death of its most beloved groundhog turned to shame on Wednesday as officials admitted they had switched the corpse of the real Wiarton Willy with a stuffed impostor. Groundhog Day, observed in Canada and the United States, dictates that if a groundhog sees its shadow on February 2, there will be another six weeks of winter. Willy, who reached the ripe age of 22 before expiring, was Canada's official furry meteorological forecaster for most of his life in the small town of Wiarton, just north of Toronto.

When Groundhog Day observers arrived in Wiarton on Tuesday, they were greeted with the news that Willy was dead. On Wednesday, Canadian newspapers ran a photograph of a dead albino groundhog, purported to be Willy, clutching a carrot, and lying face-up in a small coffin. The only problem was that Willy's real body was discovered days before in an advanced stage of decomposition, indicating he had probably been dead for weeks.

"When the handler pulled him out, his remains were not presentable for public viewing," acknowledged Groundhog Day organizer Bill Walker. He said the town had meant no harm by displaying the corpse of the imposter, and had wanted to allow the public to reach "closure" over the rodent's death. The imposter in the coffin was a previous Willy, who had been stuffed years before.

Walker said Willy's remains were actually discovered on Sunday when a handler went to wake him up from hibernation so he could fulfill his role in the annual pageant. The town of Wiarton, which kept a special home for the rodent, has now launched a search for another Willy. "We've had calls from people who said they saw an albino groundhog last year," he said. "But they're hibernating right now so we'll have to wait until spring."

Willy's death inspired eulogies and even the occasional tear from elected officials in the national parliament and made headlines internationally. No one is quite sure of the origin of the tradition of groundhog watching. The U.S. counterpart of Wiarton Willy is Punxsutawney Phil, who emerged from his Pennsylvania home early on Tuesday as a crowd of 25,000 people watched. Phil failed to see his shadow, signaling that spring was right around the corner.

Jennifer - re: Super Bowl commercials... I can't really recommend any, as I found this year's batch to be the most disappointing set I can recall.

I've just has a long stretch without power -- which is MY excuse for not posting. What's yours? (Why do I suddenly feel like Baby June?) Not having power was not too bad. For some reason one of the phones worked and I have lots of flashlights and candles. The wonderdog and I cuddled up and all was cozy. I AM glad the power's back, though, because everything in the freezer would've defrosted - including my precious frozen roast chestnuts; and it was starting to get just a tad cold for comfort.

Yes, Laura II has forsaken the likes of us.  Kids today, I tell you.

Watched Lost in Tarnation, about which more tomorrow.

I now have to reset the time on everything - which is so boring.

...Especially the fax machine. I have an old one in which all the I.D. data has to be input all over again each time the power goes out.

The good thing about losing power here in this semi rural environment is that as it happens quite often, I don't usually forget how to reset the clocks. Setting the sundial to daylight savings is far more of a problem. I was going to mention the egg timer but thought that would be going just a little too far. (We do have a sundial in the garden).

Right under the the Kookaburra's Gum Tree, no doubt.

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree,
Merry, merry king of the bush is he,
Laugh, Kookaburra, Laugh, Kookaburra,
Gay your life must be.

I have a big meeting in the morning. I should get to sleep so that my brain is working tomorrow. I'm not going to reset anything right now except the radio-clock by the bed. Good night, all.

Indeed my life is just that.

We are happy little vegemites
As bright as bright can be
We all adore our vegemite
For breakfast lunch and tea
We all adore our vegemite
It puts a rose in every cheek.

I lived in an apartment for about 4-1/2 years and never lost power, even during one of the worst frozen ice storms that I'd ever lived through...the apartment was on the same power grid as a hospital and a retirement complex.

Now there, Tom, let's not leave out lines:

Our mother says we're growing
stronger every single week.
Because we love our Vegemite.
We all adore our Vegemite.
It puts a rose in every cheek!

I live in a retirement complex now and we still lose power. Of course there are only two human residents and the building is not that complex.

I don't remember ever hearing or seeing the lines about "our mother". Perhaps it is the Sydney variation. (Then again at 58 I am having memory problems). Perhaps the lines were never sung clearly enough for me to understand.
This site is always so informative.
No Kookaburras in view but I can see two cockatoos from my window - they want to be fed!

Feeding finished. Sulpher crested cockatoos. We had five yellow tailed black cockatoos in the garden ealier. They do not feed from the seed bowls but "prune" the trees. Quite a parrot family day - we have also has the usual rosellas, king parrots and galahs here as well.
No wonder I hate to see caged birds.

DERBRUCER: There was interesting book brought out in the early 1970's - "Cinderella Dressed in Yella" - it was about songs and rhymes used by Australian children - the variation between regions and over time was fascinating.

Honk! the Music Theatre of Witchita's First American cast recording (I love the London recording!)
Boy Meets Boy (with an instrumental track not on the album)
Rap Master Ronnie by Elizabeth Swados and Garry Trudeau
Reginald de Kovin's Robin Hood (I've had a discarded library copy of the vocal score for years and finally I'll get to hear it)

Small World. The International City Theatre in Long Beach CA did Honk when I was on their Board of Directors.

At the same time Boy Meets Boy was playing to packed houses, Swados had a presentation of her Nightclub Cantata at the Top of the Gate.

Has any one evry seen this:

Alice at the Palace 1981 VHS [NTSC]
By Elizabeth Swados

With: Meryl Streep  Betty Aberlin  Debbie Allen  Michael Jeter  Mark Linn-Baker  Stuart Baker-Bergen, Richard Cox, Sheila Dabney, Rodney Hudson, Charles Lanyer, Kathryn Morath Deborah Rush

"Amusingly eclectic and cute." -The Villager

This "music hall" version of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass was adapted for television from Elizabeth Swados’ Joseph Papp/New York Shakespeare Festival production entitled Alice in Concert for which Swados also composed the score, adapted the book and directed for the stage. Starring Meryl Streep and featuring Debbie Allen and Betty Aberlin, "Alice At The Palace" is an entertaining and shrewdly conceived retelling of the Carroll classics with all of the beloved characters --from the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat to the Queen of Hearts-- given a unique twist by the witty and charming performances of an accomplished theatrical ensemble. "Alice At The Palace" was originally broadcast as part of NBC-TV’s "Project Peacock" series in 1982.

Directed by Emile Ardolino
