And now I'm back and Sing has left.

We had a very good time. There were many couples in attendance. Hedda asked how many couples there were and many, many hands went up. One couple has been together for 17 years and another for 14 years. In honor of VD Miss Hedda had a new wig with a big red bow and a green dress with red highlights. Her monolouge was very sharp and funny. We didn't win any door prizes but we had a good time nonetheless, though we did miss getting a red swag bag with fortune cookies and a reformulated formula of KY (that's the personal lubricant, not the state of Kentucky)

I forgot how attractive Mr. Ryan O'Neal used to be before the vagaries of life took over. Miss Madeline Kahn was a hoot (as usual). She was "introduced" in this movie. I didn't realize this was her first major role. Miss Barbra was very good and the car chase at the end was just as much fun as I remember.

There will be an article in the City Section of Sunday's Times about the Chelsea Classics experience. They have some great films lined up for the Spring. They aren't listed on the Web site but things like Valley of the Dolls, Auntie Mame, The Women, Sunset Boulevard and more. I might be spending Thursday nights in May at Chelsea Clearview Cinemas.

Good morning, all! I'm a bit down today; this is the anniversary of my dad's death. He died a year ago today, around 12:50 am, and I awoke this morning at 12:50 am, wondering if he'd stopped by to check on me. I'd wanted to bein Ohio today to stop by his grave, but the finances of the apartment have kept me here.  So, perhaps on March 15 I'll return to visit him.

Today's mostly domestic: a stop at the bank for some notarized signatures, a trip to the pharmacy, some writing here, and possibly a movie after I scrub another section of the floor with Steri-Fab.

TOD:
DVD: Everything's still in storage, but I have a couple of Netflix titles and the new JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB and BECOMING JANE
CD: FINIAN'S RAINBOW (City Center Revival), Offenbach Entre Nous,  ON THE TOWN
   VCR: Everything's in storage

Laundry tonight, then dinner.

Ant has dance class tomorrow and he might go to an audition. He also might go to an audition on Sunday though he hasn't decided yet.

We still have some Noel Coward to watch. We have also been watching some old movies from the 30s, 40s and 50s. Years ago Ant bought a set of 10 videotapes called

Hollywood Legends Glamorous Ladies

They are listed as "10 Hollywood Classics From the Golden Age of the Silver Screen"

Well it is marketing after all. Some of them are quite good. Some of them...are not. We haven't yet watched them all. The films include:

Elizabeth Taylor in Father's Little Dividend (watched and enjoyed)

Carole Lombard in Nothing Sacred (watched and enjoyed, the Jule Styne musical Hazel Flagg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hazel_Flagg) is based on this film)

Betty Davis in Of Human Bondage (watched and enjoyed)

Ginger Rogers in Heartbeat (watched and enjoyed by Ant but not by me)

Lana Turner in Mr. Imperium (not yet watched)

Greta Garbo in Joyless Street (not yet watched)

Rita Hayworth in The Dancing Pirate (watched and enjoyed by Ant but not by me; this is marketing run amok; it's NOT a Rita Hayworth movie. She has a very, very, very small role, in fact she's not even listed in the credits, you only see her if you know what she looked like in 1936 and can pick her out in one of the dancing sequences; I thought the movie was painful to watch)

Marlene Dietrich in The Blue Angel (not yet watched)

Dorothy Lamour in My Favorite Brunette (watched and sort of enjoyed by Ant; again, I found this painful to watch; I found it not remotely funny; the story was irritating and Bob Hope was DREADFULLY bad (IMHO); Dorthy Lamour was Dorthy Lamour, beautiful but not much else)

Marilyn Monroe in Hometown Story (watched and sort of enjoyed; not as bad as the Rita Hayworth marketing but still, this is not a Marilyn Monroe movie; she has a small role (she does get screen credit) as a secretary; it's 61 minutes of hype about how business is good for America and how profits are more than just money)

Well, it is almost 8:30 so I should get back to work.

Later, gaters.

I didn't get nearly enough sleep. I stayed up too late writing. Ah, well, one of the downsides of the job. I did stop at a certain point and picked back up this morning. Sometimes, though, one needs to get his thoughts down then no matter what the hour.

Media:

CD:  an unreleased promo copy of Claudine Longet:  Treasures.  We just listened to her Top 40 rendition of "Rosemary's Baby."  Not (the Top 40 part).

DVD:  finally made it through my mammoth reviewing project of the 14 DVD History Channel war set.  Oy.   In spare time, Betsy and I watched "Once," which, while perfectly enjoyable, was not the second coming for us that several people had told us it would be.  Glen Hansard (or whatever his name is) looks like the Celtic cousin of that guy on Mythbusters.  :)

Why do my eyes/mind keep reading today's topic title as THE LUBOVITCH TOUCH?   ::)

Do you mean Lubavitch?  Betsy's brother and family go to a Chabad Lubavitcher shul outside of Milwaukie, Wisconsin, and while I must say that kind of ultra-orthodoxy is completely foreign to me, they are some of the coolest people I've ever met and they were so remarkably loving and accepting of my autistic nephew who made his Bar Mitzvah there.

No, as I mentioned (vaguely) last night, her surprise I anticipated and so wasn't blown away (things were going just too smoothly). The aftermath, however, was very exciting.

The A&M Board says there were only 10 (ten!) of these promo CDs of Claudine issued, that the project was pulled after that.  Wow.  I got it on eBay for $9.99 from a Russian seller, believe it or don't.  It's all of her unreleased to LP singles, some nice stuff, including stuff I think she's singing in Japanese.  I'm not a big fan of her voice, but most of her arrangements were by Nick DeCaro, whom I've always really liked.

I really did enjoy last night's show.

And it was interesting to find out another of the Oceanic 6.

Sayid's flashforwards were very interesting.

I can't say that i figured out what his "girlfriend" was up to. But I will say i was a bit disappointed that they let ben talk in the last bit. I think the reveal would have been so much better if it had not been completely obvious that that was his voice.

I will say though that the thought of sayid working for ben is very intriguing. And i can't wait to find out more about that.

I also think it will be very interesting to see if sayid and the helicopter land on the boat.

Several of you here (and you know who you are) will get a kick out of this:

As the Oregonians (and maybe Washingtonians) may know, there's been a continuing battle here on the legality of civil unions for gay couples.  So there was a big op-ed piece by this completely brain-dead right wing Republican state senator named Marylin (she can't even spell her name correctly) Shannon, going on and on about the "gay agenda."  Well, two days later there was a hysterical letter to the editor in the Oregonian from a guy who said he was straight and he had never gotten a copy of the gay agenda, that perhaps it was lost in the mail, and therefore could Ms. Shannon please forward her copy on to him.    ;D

Well, I'm about to enjoy some macarons from a new little, French coffee and pastry shop I happened to walk by during my lunch break.  Today's flavors - well, at least the one I'm going to try: matcha green tea and Violette (violet).

We have had this ridiculously slow drain in our main bathroom that I have been Liquid Plum'ring and Drano-ing into oblivion for years.  I finally got sick of having to do this every few months and got the heavy duty, sulphuric acid kind today and we actually have "swirling" water for the first time ever in that bathroom drain.  Of course I told Betsy the punchline is the pipes are going to fall off the sink in a few minutes.

With our last name's most common mis-spelling, she shares a bunch more, including a pretty comical author.

However the drive around North Hollywood and back to Burbank was very nice and I stopped at Ralph's Grocery store and purchaed somw low carb yogurt.

I imagine BK is at his table in the ballroom awaiting the throngs. I was going to go down to visit with him but I do not think they will let me in until 11 pm as I am not with one of the celebrity guests this time.

I hope this lets my neighbors who are sick of looking at the 40 cartons outside my apartment door breathe a sigh of relief as well.  The collection of theatre/career memorabilia will indeed be going to Miami, and today things were set into motion on how the cartons will get to Oxford, OH, and what I need to do to expedite they're arriving safely.

My super, myneighbors, and, I understand, the local fire dept station are eager to see this leave the building ASAP, so hopefully, within the next week or so, it will vanish.

Taking a bit of a break from the Ray Courts Hollywood Collectors Show.

So far I have had nice chats with Kathleen Hughes...

I began my afternoon by watching last night's SUPERNATURAL. An excellent episode with a great showcase this week for Jared Padeleki.

Of course, I had to watch it in SD being delayed as it was. And just like the last time it was delayed, the show was 15 minutes late in beginning, but I learned from my mistake last time and had the DVR record the show after SUPERNATURAL on the cable guide, so I ended up getting to see the entire show.

It's been a real social-work kind of day here at the library - no, we don't hand out bus fare and, no, I can't tell you where you're supposed to vote (but the Board of Elections can...).

My friend and co-worker, Sue, and I spent some time today looking forward to our trip next month to Minneapolis for the Public Library Association conference.  Here are some theatre options we're considering:

Jersey Boys at the Orpheum
Jane Eyre and Third at the Guthrie
42nd Street, Respect, and The Wonder Bread Years at Chanhassen Dinner Theatre

Any insights?

Also, Sue asked me to ask folks here if anyone can recommend a travel company or website that she can use to plan a theatre trip to London.  She just wants lodging and tickets, and maybe airfare, without a lot of other package stuff.

Next, I watched WALKER, directed by Alex Cox. Ostensibly a quasi-biography of William Walker who invaded Nicaragua in 1856 (at the behest of Cornelius Vanderbilt) and set himself up as president for a couple of years until he was ousted. Of course, being made in 1987, the film really served as a satirical indictment of Reagan's policies against the Sandinistas.

Though it wasn't really meant as a historical drama, I did find the historical aspects the most interesting. The satire is very heavy handed, and all kinds of anachronisms are introduced into the film that took me out of the movie every single time.

Still, I'm glad I saw it.
Title: Re:THE LUBITSCH TOUCH
Post by: Matt H. on February 15, 2008, 01:29:31 PM
I then spent most of the remainder of the afternoon watching the bonus features on the disc. There's a long documentary shot during the making of the film, and it really gives a true behind the scenes look at making the movie including complaints from the extras, seeing the stars out of character, watching the director in action and also relaxing. (This director also did REPO MAN and SID AND NANCY.)

There's also an audio diary of Miguel Sandoval (the DA on MEDIUM) who played a small part in the movie and also served as second unit director on the film.

There's also a section of behind the scenes photographs and a longer section of Polaroids taken of the actors in costume.

This just in from VARIETY:

Today CBS issued its first wave of renewals for next season. They include only two presently running comedies: TWO AND A HALF MEN and THE BIG BANG THEORY. SURVIVOR and THE AMAZING RACE have already received renewals for next season.

Also renewed for next season were "Cold Case," "Criminal Minds," "CSI," "CSI: Miami," "CSI: NY," "Ghost Whisperer," "NCIS," "Numbers" and "Without a Trace."

Missing from the pickup list: critical fave laffer "How I Met Your Mother." Net hasn't yet determined the long-term fates of newcomers "Moonlight," "Cane" and "Welcome to the Captain," while "The Unit," "Shark," "Jericho," "Rules of Engagement" and "The New Adventures of Old Christine" also remain on the bubble.

It's a roller coaster here, I tell ya; my crazy neighbor has been complaining, according to the building management, about the 40 cartons occupying floor space outside my door.  No one else on the third floor has a problem but her.  So, today, around four pm, a local battalion from the local fire dept arrived to check out a complaint about the cartons. They were very nice, as they gave me a summons, and advised me to get the cartons out of the hall by Tuesday, which is the day that I supposedly hear how MU wants to handle getting the cartons to Ohio. Of course the cartons may not leave the premises until a month after that.

So, I will by Tuesdasy have 40+ unwanted cartons taking up space once again in my apartment because a neurotic bitch has to cause problems.  Of course, she denied the complaints after I confronted her, but the building manager told me she had been complaining! Maybe I shokd send her infested bedding.

I have been watching the first season of "Gidget" (which we watched religiously in 1965).  I'm seeing my older sister's wardrobe in every episode!

Although it was mostly filmed on the Screen Gems lot  (Mr. Wilson's house was the exterior, and it was Hazel's kitchen), they do some nice 1965  location shots occasionally.  I actually thought life and high school were going to be that way.  Little did I know.......

Things I learned today:

Frank Stallone is much better looking in real life then in photos. In fact he is hot! He could have me any time he wanted...if he were so inclined.

John Wesley Shipp is rather tall and has the biggest hands I have ever seen on a human being.

The cast of LAND OF THE GIANTS are about as nice of people you could ever meet.

Molly Bee is a total sweetheart, despite all of her difficulties in life.

John Saxon is rarely asked about his one Bollywood movie appearance, and was quite suprised that I knew who Shammi Kapoor and Dharmendra were.

Cynthia Myers is still stacked! And one of the sweetest gals ever.

I began my evening by watching the remaining bonus features on WALKER.

One feature called WALKER 2008 was nothing but director Alex Cox pulling out the file of reviews for WALKER, noting the two or three positive reviews the film received, and then reading excerpts from all the negative ones. I didn't quite understand the point of the feature. It's not like time has proven the film a masterpiece at all. It still divides everyone who sees it: some love it and others think it's ridiculous.

I saw my very first HD-DVD tonight: PRIDE & PREJUDICE. I only got to see a little bit of it, but I rewatched it in SD earlier this week so I could have the SD image firmly in my mind when I saw the HD version.

No comparison, of course. So much sharper, much more dimensional in look, and details all were more lifelike. The Dolby TrueHD track made the music sound like it was wafting around you, kind of hovering in the air. Remarkable.

I probably won't get to BEOWULF until Sunday. I don't remember what kind of bonus features are on it (it may even be a two disc set. It came weeks ago, but I do the DVDs in order of release dates).

After that, it's that mammoth Criterion box for THE LAST EMPEROR which has FOUR discs in it - two separate versions of the film (one with commentary) plus two discs of bonus features. It will take me three or four days with that box alone.

Our aisle really wasn't busy, though, for most of the day.  Bert arrived about thirty minutes after I did, and we just had a great time together all day.  Miss Mackenzie Phillips wasn't there and, in fact, didn't show up until three because she broke a tooth.  By that time, Mr. Jonathan Winters had left because he ran out of photos, so Mackenzie took his prime table.  She'll probably be back with us tomorrow.

I did get the PM - I can't make any decisions until Sunday, but I will say that these Oscar promos are not like buying regular CDs, they're all highly collectible items.  But, I'll sort it out on Sunday and let you know what can be done.

One of my projects when it warms up a bit and I can find someone to help me haul them to my car is there is a now a place that is collecting old electronics to keep them from, going in the landfill. I have two dead monitors and a scanner taht need to go. I am tired of using them as a foot rest and a floor ornament

One of the monitors blew up when I was reading here on HHW... All of sudden the notes disappeared and the screen went black with a spoof of smoke coming out from the back.
