Well, you've read the notes, the notes were dated, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently dating themselves and having a moovelous time.

Walden only had twelve lines in the whole show.  When they were negotiating the B'way contracts, they said the only way it made financial sense for the producers was if he would also understudy two roles.  Needless to say, he told them no.  The chutzpah of producers today knows no bounds.

Good morning, all!  First up today, a trek to Toyland. I have to cart home the first act scores to Lady Of The Slipper to begin the critical notes on the score.  I will work on the notes here during the week.

After that, I have 10 remaining cartons to seal and move back into the apartment to join their 31 siblings already cluttering my new uncluttered space.  DR Laura, I loved your reference to my artwork.

The scuttlebutt about the apartment building, now that the gossip on the bitch neighbor's complaints to the fire dept and management has been passed around, is that many tenants have stories about her craziness and neurotic behavior; she's not very popular, I'm learning. As one of my neighbors asked yesterday, "what are the firemen doing on the third floor of an apartment bulding in a tour with Jaymie when they showed up to investigate a steam pipe on the building next door?"

As for Jaymie, the charges I dumped on her yesterday were:
   1.  why is it you can't leave me a note or a phone call about the fire dept on Thursday because you claim you were too busy with classes while you had no problem wasting your time while escorting them on a tour of our apartment building?
   2.  when the fire dept asked about the cartons in the hallway, why didn't you give them my number (she has it) and tell them to call me?
   3.  why is it you only called me to alert me to the problem 2 hours before the firemen showed up on Friday afternoon with their violation order?
   4.  why is it you called the apartment management on Friday afternoon immediately after calling me to alert them that they might be subject to a fine for my clutter?

And she claims she's a friend.  Miss Jaymie in 3E.

DR Jose, on a much cheerier note, I love the Steinway Hall photo!

Seeing the ADD1NG MACHINE musical this afternoon.  This has gotten polarizing reactions on All That Chat, with extreme love and extreme hate (both sides from posters I've respected in the past) more extreme than any other new musical I can recall in a long time.  Should be fascinating.

We did some canvassing of the neighborhood (we are block captains) to gather contact information for our neighbors. Car break-ins are a big problem here because many people either have to park on the street or their houses are very close to the street so their car is barely parked off the street.

We found out that several neighbors were hit within the last few weeks; one of the scum even stole the whole car! (It was 14 years old, so the owner wasn't too heartbroken...)

DEAD MAN'S CELL PHONE is one of those titles that you hear....and then think "Why didn't I think of that?"

Great photos and stories from the Hollywood Collector's Show.  Mr BIG certainly has unusually colored hair - for a regular person, not for a producer.

DR JOSE all of those photos are certainly avatar/blog worthy to be sure.

Hello DR EDISAURUS.

Hitler Bamboo!  Who knew there WAS such a thing?

Rainy today, warm with thunderstorms predicted.  I myself have been under the weather.....a terrible place to be, let me tell you.

But I did watch my TAMMY movies and enjoyed them, to a degree.  John Gavin was so bad in TAMMY TELL ME TRUE and Peter Fonda was so bad in TAMMY AND THE DOCTOR that....well....Leslie Nielson looked like Sir John Gielgud in comparison.

I am of the opinion that I think Mr John Saxon was Miss Sandra Dee's most complimentary leading man.  I still think they were so perfect in THE RELUCTANT DEBUTANTE, and would hope that movie would see a DVD release someday.

Jrand - Indeed, I thought the same thing about GROUNDHOG DAY when I heard the concept - it seemed so obvious, so why didn't I think of that before they did?

But then it turned out that the idea of a day repeating wasn't that new after all.

So i wonder if there will be even wilder riffs to come on the idea of a dead person's cell phone.  But playwright Sarah Ruhl goes very wild with it.

P.S. for you as an actor - The "Dead Man" role seems like it could be played by a whole range of ages, so be alert if it's done in your area.  It's a plum role, so if anyone asks you to play it, read the second act before refusing it.

Oh, I just read the sad news that actor Perry Lopez passed away in Beverly Hills of lung cancer. Seems he guest starred on just about every TV show made between 1955 and 1994, and of course he will be long remembered as the lead in the Beverly Garland  Allison Hayes film THE STEEL JUNGLE.

We finished the first season of DEXTER last night.  Largely compelling, but I found the final couple of episodes pretty hackneyed, and, like the killer's identity, I also guessed his connection to Dexter probably halfway through the season, as I bet any good mystery fan will, too.  But it's certainly an unusual series and there are some great performances even when the scripts follow well-worn formulas.

Indeed, not.

I've been enjoying the exploits of bk and MBarnum rigorously.

I've done my laundry for the week.

I've cooked my dinners for the weekend.

I've grocery shopped.

I've shopped for music and dvds and books.

I've ripped dvds so that they are ready for a major trade.

I'm ready for a rest.

I bought, with a 10% off total sale coupon, the dvds of THE WIZ and EL CID.
I watched all of the 2nd disc of EL CID's special features, so perhaps later I shall watch the film.
I watched a lot of THE WIZ; it's still an ugly film even with the anamorphic enhancement, but, this new release boast a terrific DTS soundtrack in addition to the DD 5.1.

The opera last night was fun.  They sang in German with supertitles, but the dialogue was rendered in English.  The "guest artists" in the party scene were Yale Opera graduates now on the Met roster.  Unfortunately, it just highlighted how much the current students still have to develop as singers.

No, I don't think I'll rewatch it. BROTHERS & SISTERS is on opposite, and really, I just don't have the time to rewatch, especially since the shows are SO vivid in my head. I read that CBS was far more lethal with the language cutting than with the gore (they are the network of CRIMINAL MINDS and the CSI shows, after all).

But I do hope you two like it. I had never seen a series quite like it when it first premiered, and I found the tension almost unbearable as it proceeded through its season. The second season is even more intense.

As I cooked and ate lunch, I finished watching FLAMINGO ROAD with Joan Crawford. Apart from a scratch or two and some dirt specks not picked up in the digital cleaning, it looks much improved from the laserdisc and even the DVD-R I recorded off TCM a year or two ago.

Next, I watched BEOWULF. Motion capture animation has progressed greatly since THE POLAR EXPRESS, and this was much more lifelike with the men in the story. There are shots that you would absolutely swear were live action and not animation.

For some strange reason, the animators have not aged or blemished the women in any way, so they look much less real, more like porcelain dolls when they enter and act in a scene.

Since the movie was filmed with 3-D in mind, there are a plethora of shots specifically for 3-D effects. Even in this standard def 2-D version, the impact is very powerful. I'll bet the HD-DVD version is eye-popping because the sDVD version I watched today is flawless in every respect - picture and sound. A really fun comic book style version of the Old English legend.

In fact, I enjoyed it much more than SPIDERMAN 3, probably its closest film relative from last year.

I watched three of the bonus featurettes on the disc. The "making of" ran about 23 minutes. The creation of the monsters featurette was about 5 minutes, and the original legend of Beowulf and how it was adapted for the screen was about 6 minutes.

Beautiful blue skies, sunshine.  This marks the first nice Sunday of the year, which means the cars were lined up in front of my house trying to get into Point Defiance Park.

I spent the weekend deep cleaning. Today I got all the laundry done, cleaned the kitchen and did various other things. I was really intending to work at the office today but I went down there and it was really cold.  I also realized that my morning appointment is rescheduling because she's starting a new job tomorrow and my afternoon hearing in state court was continued because the prosecutor had something going on.  Since there is no federal court for President's Day, I decided to put off the weekend work until tomorrow.  Of course I brought home a ton of files, but I am very tired so I think they shall remain where they are.  I can do it tomorrow.

My goal for the evening is to finish reading Doris Lessing's The Grandmothers, for my book group discussion this coming Thursday.  Well, "finish" isn't exactly the word, because I refuse to read the 3rd of the four short novels that comprise the book.  It's an allegory, I think, and I couldn't make heads or tails of it.  Life's too short.

One dealer, who shall remain nameless (Kevin at Royal Books) took the cake for the most outrageously outrageous prices I've ever seen on books that until HE got them, were never that rare.  Not that anyone is paying his absolutely inane prices, but you can just see what he's trying to do to up the market in his niche (books into films, especially noir) and I find it reprehensible and nauseating.  He has my former copy of Cornell Woolrich's The Bride Wore Black, which I purchased a little over ten years ago at a book fair in Burbank for the then fairly high price of $1300.  This yahoo is now charging $12,500.  I mean, he's out of his sick mind.  And all his books are like that - things that just a few years ago you could get for $500 he's got for $5,000.  Dealers like this singlehandedly ruin book collecting for everyone, including other dealers.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up...  And, thankfully(?), I could hear my cellphone vibrating in my coat pocket this morning a little after 9:00...  "Hi, Jose... I don't remember if we checked to see if you were available today, and you said you weren't available, but if you happen to be available..."  Another pianist came down with the flu, so...

After racing through my morning ablutions, I was down at the rehearsal studio about an hour later with a copy of the Sunday Times and an egg and bacon sandwich from the café on the corner.

It was sort of a slow-paced day for me, but the flow of individuals coming through the door of the studio was pretty constant. It was all individual calls and work sessions today, and I found myself star-struck a few times throughout the day.  :)

However, since I was without my laptop, and since their was no cellphone reception in the rehearsal studio, I was able to read the NY Times cover to cover, which is something I haven't done in a long time.  Between playing ever couple of minutes and working my way section by section through the paper, I had a very good day.

DR TCB - Next time, just make the burgers thicker if you're using "cheaper" beef.  -I'm guessing we're talking about the 80% hamburger?  (20% fat).  It also helps to lower the temp if you're cooking hamburger with that high a fat content.  Or cook them on a griddles or in a skillet on the stove.  ;)

Ah...  Well, next time - and there will be a next time - form the patties in advance and let them chill for a bit - or even freeze them - before putting them on the grill. There will be flares up, but if you can move them to a cooler part of the grill after the initial searing, that should help. Do you have a two-sided/burner gas grill?

And I can safely say that this grumpy shuttle bus driver might just as well turn off his sign that reads "Earned Gratuities are Greatly Appreciated."

On the other hand  the gentleman helped me with my bags at the car rental return and who who drove me from the car rental return, across the street to the Burbank Airport earned quite a large tip from me. I  also was greatly enjoying his Ethiopian pop music.

I may now have a new musical obsession.

Whew!  You're on a shuttle bus....never mind.

And, yes, the light in the rehearsal studio was quite bad, dim.  The studio itself was very nice - good floors, nice mirrors, a decent piano, good location, etc.  But the lighting really was just not ideal, and there were no windows either.  We kept looking for a dimmer switch, but were eventually told by the staff, "Oh, it's always that dark in there."  ???  Any time I did have a break, I would walk out to the waiting area which had windows and great light to read my paper.  -However, getting the audio feed of Young Frankenstein from the theatre next door was kind of cool.

About four weeks ago, a pretty kitty with a flea color started hanging out in my backyard.

No other collar, and she was very timid if approached.  When Miss Blue Moon came in, she would come up to the door to get her dish of kitty food.

Now and then she would be there when I looked out at night.  I think she slept on the back porch.  I picked her up once and noticed she had been de-clawed, so somewhere along the line, she was someone's pet.

Kept looking in the paper and for flyers in case her owner was searching for her.  Miss Blue Moon did NOT like another mammal getting any attention.

I named her Stache since she had a nice little moustache marking on her upper cat lip.

How horrible that someone would abandon a declawed kitty.  There is no excuse for that.  It can usually be a death sentence for a kitten.

When I adopted Czar Nicholas from the pound, he had been found abandoned and he was declawed.

After being inside for about an hour, she was making herself comfortable on the towel inside the carrier and purring and purring.

Sue and Will picked her up about 11 a.m.

Today Sue brought the carrier back and said Stache is wonderful.  She walks around the house.  She is litter box trained.  Her favorite thing to do is sit on a lap for as long as the lap will let her.

I am so happy that she has found a good home.  The End.

I was afraid for her, too....but she seemed to stick close to the yard, and no other animals roam there except for YOU KNOW WHO.  And once I found out she was spending most of her time on the enclosed back porch, I thought she would be okay.

Front claws only.....still has the back.

No......I think they are going to name her Bosco (a name we are familiar with here at HHW) because of her chocolate milk moustache look.

I am sorry for the family that had to give her up - not happy with how they did it - but happy for her and Will and Sue.  8)

TCB-Beautiful photo.

We also had a beautiful sunny day.  I didn’t need a coat.  Bryan said it was beautiful in Portland too, not that he had been out much.  He was exhausted from his long trip home yesterday.  The early morning flight didn’t get far, about 30 minutes out, before it had to return to Chicago due to a mechanical problem.

Once he finally made it home, late last night, he didn't get much sleep.  His Sugar Glider protested most the night at having been left at home.

Thanks Jane, I think it's a combo of a  hairball and she eats too fast. It appears she's kept her food down today, but she hasn't eaten much, several small meals, but she's had several of them. She is sleeping now and has been for awhile. But she spent the day following me upstairs and downstairs and everwhere I was cleaning and she always sleeps in the evening, so I think she may be ok. But I'm thinking it may not hurt to have her checked out.

And speaking of the New York Times, there was a great article/interview with Sam Buntrock, the director of the soon-to-open revival of Sunday In the Park with George. First of all, I had no idea he was so young - 32 years old!  Secondly, the following excerpt really hit home with/to me:

Quote
The turning point came in 2003 after a cancer scare (“I’m fine now”) and a bout with alcoholism. (He’s been sober five years.) “It was a very, very bad year,” he said. But by the end he had emerged with the crucial idea to mix his interests in animation and theater in a production of one of the few great Sondheim shows that hadn’t been given a Broadway revival. Inspiration hit after revisiting the score of “Sunday in the Park,” a musical about, among other things, an artist’s anxiety about wasting his talent.

“If you’ve been through a bad year, and you hear that score, it hurts, but in a good way,” Mr. Buntrock said. “It makes you feel that what you’ve been feeling is connected to something.”

JRand, glad you found a great home for the kitty. After losing a 20 year old cat a few years ago, I was afraid to adopt another because I thought I couldn't care for another cat. Having a kitty that needs them will help them through their heartbreak. Happy ending all around!

I think when cats are declawed, they only do the front feet. That way, they can still climb a tree if necessary. I've never had any of mine declawed, just in case they might escape from the house and have to defend themselves.

After a nice visit with the gardening show producer, who brought a pile of lenten roses and fresh-baked chocolate ship cookies, we were relaxing (Greg cleaned the gutters while I "entertained") and lo and behold, friends appeared to take us out for a belated birthday dinner...my godson, his sister, and parents. His mom had been to the house but the rest of them had not seen it.

We had nice Indian food, which they all love, and then came back so they could play with the kitties. I was so glad I was able to offer them milk and homemade cookies!

When we bundled the kids into the car, our godson said "Can we come back---real soon?"

Awwwwww....it was so much fun. And yet we also realize at time like this how unkidproof our house is and that the cats had never seen children before. I would try to teach Sydney how to talk softly and pet the cats softly but she would get so excited about them that her voice would rise to a supersonic squeal!

After they left, we took a long walk around the neighborhood with a coffee stop, and now the cats are enjoying their peaceful adults again!

Oy - the day is almost over.  Just a lot of couch sitting (like so much fish) to finish the day.  Oh, and a skinny cow or 4.

Today was great fun, sprinkled with moments of frustration and stress.  Church was fine, which is always good.  Still having trouble grasping the fact that Easter is only a month away.  I know, I know, get over it and get going!

This afternoon was the run-through with some set pieces, some sound, and orchestra for Seussical - The Musical  (http://bowditchmusical.org/) It's a middle school show, but we perform at the local performing arts center, which is located on the High School campus which is one of the High School's this school feeds in to.  (figure THAT out)  So, our run was in the school's gym.  Act One went well, Act Two - not so well.  It will all come together this week, but they sound great, and the orchestra ROCKS.

So, it's been a day.

Thankfully I don't need to memorize this piece, but I actually have spent quite a bit of time on the "air playing" on this one just to "grok" some of the clef changes, etc.  At MM=100 (the score marking) it's actually pretty playable, I'm just worried the horn player is going to want to zoom, zoom, zoom.

Well, that's an easy one to solve: Hindemith was pretty strict in regards to his metronome markings.  If he's rushing and/or just wishing to take a faster tempo just remind him that by doing that he is not honoring the composer's "wishes". ;)

There were two featurettes on the CHARLIE CHAN disc (sadly, neither starring Dr. Drew Casper). One involved information on Fox's handling the Chan series after the death of Warner Oland.

The other was about the career of Sidney Toler which I found very illuminating. Miles Kreuger is one of the talking heads in that one, and it's filled with useful information I certainly didn't know about Toler.
