Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in and out of the closet, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently in the closet.

Thanks for the Hollywood Collector's Show reports from DR MBARNUM and MR BK.....sounds like sales were great!

Roberta Shore was interviewed for the extras on THE SHAGGY DOG DVD release and she looks great and was very entertaining to hear.  She was also on the commentary track with Tim Considine and Tommy Kirk (I think it was them....).

The laundry is in and I'm having some coffee.  Good morning, all!  I have few plans today: LOS Critical Notes, Act One, and a trip to the local fire dept.  I want to see the original order they were sent from "downtown." Perhaps t will answer a few questions about Miss Jaymie's involvement.

I watched the second part of PRIDE & PREJUDICE, which was quite wonderful. I think this is my fourth or fifth viewing; I usually watch ithe whole over a period of 2 days. To me, besides being  the most faithful adaptation of the novel, which is true as well of Fay Weldon's 1980s BBC adaptation but the A&E/BBC version is better cast than Weldon's, it not only captures best Jane Austen's tone of irony and look at social cruelty - the book's essentially about three miserable marriages leading to two happy ones - but I like the subtext and fleshing out of Darcy's character that writer Andrew Davies provides.

I ran to see the movie version of THE WIZ on the day it opened - and just got more and more depressed as the film wore on and on and on....everyone was just .... well charmless and the original story/movie seemed drained of any imagination it had.

And Lena Horne's mouth never matched her playback in glorious closeup or medium shot and she seemed to be have trouble with her dentures.

As my noble Cherokee ancestors might have said:  Ugh.

I just purchased tickets to the local cineplex to see a live, HD broadcast of the Met's new production of Britten's Peter Grimes in March.  I've been curious to see how this works, and since I love Britten, I thought this would be a great way to check it out.  It's not the same as sitting in the Met, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper, and the theater is only 4 miles from my house.

Speaking of BIG BROTHER, I am surprised at how behind they are.

There are things that have happened in the house more than 5 days ago. Major events. That they still have not shown.

I know they like to follow a certain format. ANd show certain things on certain days. But i don't like it when they are so far behind!

Given my feelings on John Doyle as a director, I don't predict much for it.

I was lucky to see the Met's old staging by Tyrone Guthrie with John Vickers around 1985.  It was glorious.

I just ran into my super in the basement and we talked about my 40 cartons.  I get the impression Miss Jaymie's been on the phone to the fire dept about him in the past as well.  Please, someone, disconnect her phone!

I think THE WIZ has one of the worst books for a Tony-winning Best Musical in the history of the awards. The score has some wonderful music, but that book is really bad. Wisely, even though the show won 7 Tonys, Best Book wasn't one of them. SHENANDOAH rightly won Best Book that year.

The film is just awful in every respect. Ted Ross, who won the Tony playing the Lion, is the only one who stands out among the four principals. Of course, Mabel King as Evilene is lots of fun, too.

I saw this movie opening weekend in a theater whose audience was 98% African-American, and they were rapturous with every song and production number. I thought the roof was coming off the theater with "No Bad News," and Horne's "If You Believe" and Ross' "Home" got STANDING OVATIONS! I just sat still and cringed at how deadly the film was paced.

I wouldn't have known anything about Motown if it weren't for my brother who was a big fan.
He would play one song about fifty times over and over before moving on to another one.

My favorite: "You Can't Hurry Love" by the Supremes.

Favorite singers and groups:

Mary Wells
Four Tops
Temptations
Supremes
Marvin Gaye
Martha and the Vandellas

My very first boy friend and I had a song we called "our song": Mary Wells' "My Guy."

Today I begin the big project that I've been dreading just a bit - THE LAST EMPEROR. I wish I liked the movie more. It's grand and sweeping, but it's a cold epic, at least that was my initial reaction all those years ago when it was released. I've never watched it since.

There are at least four feature-length documentaries also in this big box, so I'll have my hands full with it for the next several days (taking time out for favorite TV shows, of course!)

I have to say when I saw how bad this was and how poorly it did at the box-office, I truly believed film musicals (except for an occasional Fosse movie or Broadway adaptation) were over.

Getting the rhythms down and the entrances of the "Bobby/Baby" stuff in that opening number right were some of the most difficult things I ever did in theater. (Learning my harmony part for "Cabaret" in AND THE WORLD GOES 'ROUND was another.)

A little pre-Wiz (hmmm, how unseemly) Charlie Smalls trivia:  One of Portland's jazz legends is vocalist Nancy King, who regaled me with this story:  she was part of a band that was briefly signed by A&M, called Charlie Smalls & Company.   They had one single (whose name I can't recall right now, I want to say "Sunflower" or "Sunbird" or something like that) that evidently charted quite high in L.A., but not nationally.  They never finished recording a complete album because Charlie (this is according to Nancy) made off with the advance and went to little ol' NYC, where he wrote The Wiz.

Happy President's Day to all of our favorite presidents!

Around our house, we celebrate it as Uncle Milly Day. Millard Fillmore is a great-great-great-great-great-great uncle of DR Sandra on her dad's side of the family.

Interestingly, our very own DR Megan can also celebrate Uncle Milly Day - he is her great-great-great-great-great-great uncle on her mother's side of the family.

Nice planetary actions this week, with Uranus being unusually quiet and inactive.

The week begins with Mercury turning direct on February 18, offering confidence about the future. Later the same day, the Sun enters the dream-seeker sign of Pisces, urging you to tune in to your goals. The Virgo lunar eclipse on February 20 brings an emotional emphasis to your self-care plan, while the Sun opposite Saturn on February 24 prompts you to stand back and take a realistic look at where you are and where you're headed.

As for "The Wiz" - It's always been one of those movies that I've "liked" - well, if I happen to come across it while flipping channels, and nothing else is on, I will usually end up sticking with it through the end.  Well, almost the end.  I also always seem to catch it in the middle of Michael Jackson's "Scarecrow" number.  -I think I've only seen the beginning - and end - of the movie just once, possibly twice.  Either way, I don't remember much about the opening set-up, and all I remember about the end is Diana Ross running in the snow and not seeming to be cold.

And, yes, "Can You Feel A Brand New Day" has to be one of the strangest - and unjustifiably long(!) - dance sequences every filmed.

Quote
Last night, we were leaving a restaurant and there was a wallet, cigarette lighter and camera on the steps outside of the restaurant. The owners looked at the license and said it belonged to a woman who had just left. How do you lose all that stuff out of your purse and not hear it??

That's because she didn't drop the items.  She put her purse down & placed the items on the steps while searching for her keys.  She was then distracted and left the items on the steps without putting them back into her purse. ;D

Well, I watched THE LAST EMPEROR this afternoon - the theatrical cut that's about 2 1/2 hours. Just as I remembered it: interesting story, told at a distance so we don't have much of a rooting interest for the main character, full of Bertolucci's various fetishes (threesomes, toe sucking, etc.). I can't say that I would have loved the COMPANY revival, but I sort of like the CD....although I keep going back to the original.....I guess it is a combination of originality and familiarity.....but it is STILL my favorite.

DR GINNY I love the title of that book.

I watched a 1966 movie titled KALEIDOSCOPE on Mojo HDTV this afternoon.  I had kind of avoided this movie because I thought I knew what it would be like, but it was pretty good.

Warren Beatty and Susannah York (replacing Sandra Dee) are a nice looking couple and the story.....sort of like Casino Royale without the spies - is fun.

Has anyone else ever seen it?  I would like opinions of HHW'ers please.  Fun and pretty....and I enjoyed it.

Good Afternoon!

I had a nice walk around midtown, and I only managed to get caught in one of the sudden(!) downpours(!!!) this afternoon.  Thankfully, I had my umbrella in my bag, so I was able to stroll from the East Side to the West Side in relative dryness.  -Or something like that.  The brief audition session I played for was truly brief - just one person.  But it was someone I've loved on stage for a while now, and I hope that today leads to bigger and better things for her.  And for me too, if that's in the cards. ;)

Interesting...

THe only claim I can make to a noted person is Martha Graham, the choreographer, a very distant relation. However DBF can claim MIles Standish and Lucille Ball!

In the midst of all of it, I left a  drawer open in the hallway. When I went to close it I couldn't get it shut. I pushed on it a couple times, then opened it up a little and out popped Boo.  She didn't make a noise. I was so worried I had hurt her, but it doesn't appear that it did.

She hid under the bed for a little while and then came out.  To recover from the ordeal, Callie and Boo had tuna and I had a bowl of ice cream. We are all much better now.

I am very much looking forward to the PBS COMPANY (sorry i had caught up with the end of yesterday's posts to see it mentioned).

Btw, i have a medical question (and it's slightly gross so i apologize in advance).

I had a slightly disturbing incident at a store yesterday.  I was at the cash, and suddenly my throat did not feel right.

At first i just thought it was a tickle, so i took a cough drop.

But then it began to feel like i was choking on something in my throat.

I went to the bathroom and looked. And in the back of my throat there was a yellow strip of flem.  That's the only way i can describe it. It was on one side of my throat and basically from top to bottom.

I tried to cough it up. But that only worked a bit (plus a few people became concerned).

Anyhow i went home and was not able to cough it up. So i tried hot liquid. And it was gone ( i guess i swallowed it which in itself is kind of gross).

Well i didn't have the problem all day today. Except tonight the same thing happened. And i could not cough it up again.

Does anybody have any ideas?  I'm also feeling slight sinus pains (which seem to go away when i take advil cold and sinus).  Thanks.

Cilla, I give the cat dancer as new kitten gifts.  It is a great toy.  We had one cat that loved them so much I had about 5 scattered throughout the house at once.  He would collect them all into one spot of the house & place with them all at once.  It was a riot.

My big love cat drags his stick with the feather on the string to wherever we are. The other cats chase the stick and jump on it, impeding his progress.

DR Jennifer - Don't worry about the stuff in your throat.  All it is the stuff draining from your sinuses.  It happens anytime you have a cold of sinus issue - you probably just don't always check in the mirror to see what's back there.  -The stuff has to drain somewhere - which also causes most of the throat irritation when you have a cold.  Don't try to cough any of it up, all you will do by doing that is irritate your throat even more.

In short, it sounds like you have a cold and/or sinus infection.

I keep having to take breaks from the rather excruciating motion picture I'm watching on DVD - something called Across The Universe.  After reading about the stunning visual imagery, the brilliance of Julie Taymor's "vision" I, despite having seen many comments saying it was a travesty, had to see for myself.  I have yet to see one brilliant image or any particular "vision."  What I have seen is, as usual these days, lots of yellow in the transfer.  Note to idiot filmmakers - skies are BLUE, not yellow/green.  The color BLUE is your friend.  Stop draining the color from film.  It is nauseating.  Mr. Ebert says this film "reimagines" the 60s - how so?  How is it "reimagining"?  It takes place in the 60s, Mr. Ebert, and I just don't see this reimagining, but then again, I've always felt that Mr. Ebert was a total bore as a critic.  No, it's just the 60s as seen through the eyes of the 2000s - yellow, hip, and too damn long.

The film was a box-office bombola - but you wouldn't know that from the imdb, where the fourteen year olds (many of whom actually state that they're fourteen) wax poetic about how brilliant the film is.  Perhaps that's who responds to Miss Taymor's "vision."

bk - Even though I did not think that "Across the Universe" was a great film, I thought it was a good one.  And Ms. Taymor's "vision" works much better on the large screen of a movie theatre than on a large-screen of a living room TV.

I also liked the covers of the Beatles' songs.

DR MBarnum - Are you using AOL Pictures for your photos?  Or are you just trying to access the internet and another site for your pictures through AOL's browser?  In either case... AOL's functions work better now on their web-interface.  Just open a browser window (IE, Safari, Firefex, etc.), and access AOL that way - aol.com.  -Then open another browser window for your photo program.  That should solve your problem.

Thanks for this info.

You're right i don't usually look.

The only thing that is concerning me now is that twice now (tonight and yesterday) it has gotten so bad that i've basically been choking on it.

I've coughed up flem on occasion. But this was like a long strip that could just not be coughed up. The reason i tried to cough it up was because i was choking on it! :(

DR Jennifer - This may sound gross, but the best thing to do is to drink a glass of warm water, and swallow, gently.  Trying to cough it up is the equivalent of shaking sand out of a beach towel - that's a lot of force, and a lot of irritation.  As for choking on it, it's probably more psychological than anything - you're just feeling it there, so... Breathe.  Relax.  Drinking more water and fluids will also help to loosen up your phlegm too, in general.

I guess it's good to know not to swallow it.

It could be psychological tonight. But yesterday at the store it sure wasn't. I didn't have any hot liquids. And it got pretty bad.

I thought it would be more private in the bathroom. But there were a lot of people there. It was at least nice to know that at least 2 people stopped to ask if i was okay. And one gave me some gum, which actually helped a bit.

Thanks.

DR Jennifer - You should try to swallow "it" - that will get it out of throat faster than coughing it up - and you won't irritate your throat with all that coughing.  -Of course, you'll probably end up coughing back it up eventually, but better to let that happen involuntarily. -But, again, I'm not a doctor, so...  -Do your hospitals have any sort of free nurse hotline?  Or just check with a pharmacy.

I did get two of the bonus features watched tonight. They were both concerning the 1984 trip to China that Bertolucci took.

One thing I learned is that before he decided to do THE LAST EMPEROR, he was really anxious to direct a screen version of the Dashell Hammett mystery RED HARVEST. I would like to have seen what he would have done with that book.

The deal fell through and he was devastated. He went to China to try to forget, and that's where he got the idea for THE LAST EMPEROR.

Why me or Lord, why me?

Just returned from a full day at the Grandlads.
Dogs were barking more than usual.
Woody went to fill the water bowls and let out a cry - "My Goodness!"

There, comfortably ensconced on the kitchen window sill was:

A very skinny, very cute kitty.

Woody reached for her, and she jumped right up on his shoulders.

We took her outside, and set her down - but no way was she leaving - much leg rubbing ensued.  I went inside and found a can of 9Lives which I took ouside. Kitty took a few gulps right away. She then got up in my arms and I got the motor-running treatment.

Woody took her down to the basement - where we took the pictures.

Big Trouble - he called her Josie - already the damn cat has a name!

We let Fletcher down to met her; she was stand off-ish and he sniffed a little and lost interest. Buster came down and went bananas - Josie gave a swat at his snout and he backed away.

Bonnie was next, and was much too excited to introduce (another woman in my house - I THINK NOT!)

Josie is now alone in the warmer basement with food and water curled up on an old couch.

Poor thing is thin as a rail, all ribs - just a bag of bones -but neat and clean; certainly not a feral cat.

I don't want to toss her out in the chilly weather, so I guess she spends the night.

I don't want to toss her out in the chilly weather, so I guess she spends the night.

She could be scared... She reminds of a cat I used to have named Sandy

Josie is so very cute & sweet.  It even sounds like she will settle in fine with the dogs, unless you find her owner soon.

Thank you DR's Cilla & Jose.

Jennifer I know how horrible that gagging felt.  Keep up those warm drinks & sleep elevated to keep it from draining more overnight.

ONe nice thing about Sandy is when I was on the puter when I was at my parents, she used to curl up on my feet.

Back to keeping Keith company while he watches Sherlock who is still outside on the bark.  The bark is uneven, maybe that helps & he might also be enjoying the cool air.

No, but the cellar floor is bare concrete - and well dog-marked.

Would a plain box with newspaper mean anything to her; no stores open 'till tomorrow.

If she is trained to use a little box, even an empty box might work.  You could put two out, one with shredded paper & one with a little dirt or sand.  Options are always nice.

You can put the box inside of a plastic bag, then shape the bag around the box.  This makes a good liner before adding the sand.

Thank you again Dakota.

Keith brought Sherlock in by walking around the house from the dog run to the front door.  Sherlock looked fine, even trotted to me.  As I said, this is very strange.  Maybe he will lie down now that is managed it outside.

'night again.  I hope this really is it for the night.

I have been coughing for the last few days! :P Earlier today, I called the Group Health consulting nurse who said that I should call the clinic in the morning and tell them that I should be seen tomorrow.  It sounds like the congestion is more than that...bronchitis.  I've had it before.  AND I just got cast in a new show!  Details to follow.

Anyway, while I was still there, I got a call from Troy, who is the resident music director of Capital Playhouse, asking about my availability right now, and I said I'm available.  Evidently, they needed to recast a couple of roles and if the director (who was flying in from New York) okayed it, I could be in the show!  I auditioned last summer for them, but heard nothing, until now.

So, since I'm relatively conflict free (there was one conflict, but it was the week that the show opens, so I'll have to give up the ticket), I said yes.  The show is Side Show!  The original Broadway production starred BK's very close and personal friends, Emily Skinner and Alice Ripley!

And TCB, Chris Serface is playing The Boss! :D
