Well, you've read the notes, the notes were baffling, and now it is time for you to post until the baffled cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: BENEFIC!
-
And I am baffled by the extreme number of WUSSBURGERS around these here parts.
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
I'm not Wussburgering...I'm lurking...and working on memorizing the parts to Side Show that I sing, since I'm in a production of it. :)
-
I don't have it memorized yet!! :-\
-
And on that note (C-flat...yes, C-flat), I'm off to bed to dream of music in the key of C-flat. :P Some sections of Side Show are written in the key of C-flat. :P
-
I gotta tell you. Why am I still up?
-
I have experienced the stop & go traffic you speak of...and am also baffled by it.
DR der Brucer offered the name of a scientific theory last night that I've not heard of: String Instability ["the Accordion Effect"].
From Wikipedia:
In non-linear physics, the accordion effect occurs when fluctuations in the motion of a travelling body causes disruptions in the flow of elements following it. This can happen in road traffic...
Here's the picture:

I have experience the stop & go traffic you speak of...and am also baffled by it.
DR der Brucer offered the name of a scientific theory last night that I've not heard of: String Instability ["the Accordion Effect"].
IN WORDS:
Lines of cars on a freeway behave very much like a string, loosely strung with beads, in motion. In ideal conditions, all the cars are equally spaced along the freeway string, the whole strand moving along at 60 MPH. If the lead car has cause to decelerate, or God forbid, stop, even for an instant, the entire string starts to collapse into a solid stretch of bumper-to-bumper cars. Long after the initial car resumes speed, cars at the tail end of the string are still piling up. Every car in the collapsed string adds an additional element of time to how long it will takes the entire string to regain speed again. So, even if the lead car is stopped for only 10 seconds, the 60th car in the string may have quite a few minutes before it has its chance to rejoin the forward motion - and note, all the while more and more cars are being added to the non-moving queue. If you are the 40th car in the queue, the reason for the initial slowdown may not be apparent by the time you reach the point of the initial stoppage. (In many cases, the cause is a driver being cut off by a lane changer or a cell-phone talker making a careless freeway entrance.) At times of heavy freeway traffic, succeeding string collapses often occur before the initial collapse has recovered, resulting in a series of stop and go stretches for no apparent reason. We've all experienced the tunnel effect caused when a three-lane road opens up to four lanes - long lines of bumper to bumper traffic in the three lane segment, and instant clear sailing when we hit the four lane portion. If we had a magical way of having all 50 cars in a string brake at the same time, and at the same rate - and then resume speed at the same time and the same rate, our traffic would behave more like a rod than a string and we could move many more cars per hour - and that "magical way", centralized computer control, is just a few years away for major expressways.
I'm sure David Krumholtz could explain it better, and with neat graphics :D

Not much on the planet plate this week:
As communication planet Mercury in friendship-based Aquarius comes together with lovely Venus in Aquarius, you seek out people who share your values. This will provide a fabulous climate for interesting, thought-provoking conversations. This is a perfect day to attend a lecture, throw a party or join a matchmaking service. It's not everyday that the planet of love matches up with the cerebral planet!

Icy rain and snow predicted for today.

We transferred some records to CD this weekend (as I mentioned in a post over the weekend) and now we are putting together a booklet. The layout and design process is fun. We are deciding how many pages to include and how much text and pictures.
-
As I leave to begin working on the Starr Foundation I say good morning to Tom and David
-
And a good morning to you, dear DR Ben! :)
-
Last night I watched a film on DVD entitled The Fan, starring Lauren Bacall and James Garner from 1981. Not a great film, but the kitsch factor was fun. Features a few songs by Marvin Hamlisch and Tim Rice.
-
Isn't technology fun when it allows you to do such a thing, DR BEN?
-
I first set my NEW DeeVeeDee player for 1080i, but after awhile discovered that using the AUTOMATIC setting actually gives me a more HD picture on the screen.
But now I am certainly seeing flaws and bad color on older DVD's that is much discussed among the literati here at HHW. PARADISE HAWAIIAN STYLE was very brown....

I remember when The Fan was filming in New York. It was quite the sensation. They used a now blocked tunnel on the 14th Street Subway station for the

I still can't figure out the two television shows that DR JMK was talking about yesterday....hmmmmmmmmmmm
Off to work.

Good morning, fellow Dear Readers.
-
Good morning, DearReaderLaura DR! :)
-
There was something I meant to post about last night, but by the time I remembered what it was, the computer was already shut down, and I figured I'd post it the next day (today). But now I can't remember what it was.
-
Maybe something to do with getting old :)
-
DR JoseSPiano:
I was viewing this site (http://www.auditiontrax.com), where a music director pimps his service for piano tracks and sheet music transposition.
I was just wondering - do people actually come into auditions, plunk down a machine, and sing to pre-recorded tracks? Isn't that frowned upon?
-
It was something to do with casting - it'll come to me, i'm sure. :)
-
Perhaps I shall go for a long walk today. I haven't walked in a couple of days.
-
But now I can't remember what it was.
It was probably a pun on the small tax returns you completed and "the point of diminishing returns."
-
TOD: Once we were driving on the I-17 in Phoenix. We were at a dead stop, then inched forward. For about 45 minutes. We finally got to the obstruction: a coat. Yes, there was a coat in the road. After that, we sped up to 65 mph.
-
"Wait -- let's put the old lady in here."
-- ER nurse
DearReaderLaura DR - were they talking about our DR Kerry?
-
No, they were talking about one of the several old ladies that were there that day.
-
But we heard her say that, we looked at each other and grinned and agreed that it sounded like a great quote.
-
Perhaps on April 16th, DR FJL can belt out that Phantom of the Opera standard, "Past the Point of No Return."
-
These days, we're belting out Natalie Cole's number which goes "I've been waiting for your return."

WING HONORS JERRY HERMAN!!!!
Oh, sorry.
That's American Theatre Wing.

Good morning, all! I slept late. I never did hear from the NYC manager of Fed EX, although I was told he would call about my complaint. All 43 cartons are now en route to Ohio, so it's now out of my hands.
Today, more LOS and BABES work. I may do my laundry this morning as well, but first I need to vacuum the floors so that I can mop them with Steri-Fab before I wander down the street to deal with washers and dryers.
I have no traffic thoughts. I hate driving, and Manhattan traffic is insane.
-
Los Babes, that's the title of my new Spanish musical!
-
WING HONORS JERRY HERMAN!!!!
Oh, sorry.
That's American Theatre Wing.
LOL! You had me all excited for a second there.

Folks I was errant and truant for the past three days for a very good reason, but as I was forced to watch the AA telecast I was thinking I wish I had access to a computer abd post my remarks about the telecast. At least the show didn't run over 4hrs like it had in the past. I think that was thanks the winners for the most part being brief in their thank yous. Also I think it was shorter because they did have time to over write the show.
I think it was interesting that they didn't have Brad Renfro in the memorial clips while they did have Heath Ledger. (Both victims of self drug overdoses)
-
Tuesday morning greetings! The weather that DR Cillaliz talked about last night and DR JRand talked about this morning is headed to SW Ohio today. The only problem I had on my way to work was fog, but we're supposed to have snow for the evening commute.
TOD - one of the worst traffic back-ups I've ever been in was on I-75, going to Cincinnati. We were stopped for a very long time and when they were about to reopen the highway an officer came along on foot to warn us that the pavement might still be a little slippery. I asked if a tanker had overturned, spilling oil, and he said, "Tanker, yes. Oil, no. Mrs. Butterworth's syrup."
In the 10+ years I've worked in downtown Dayton, I've experimented with all possible routes between home and work. The most obvious is I-75, but I've found that taking the old road (US 25) is just as efficient. Getting to the interstate from our house adds miles, which was an issue during the time I was leasing cars, and most of the major traffic jams occur on the highway, not on the surface streets.

TV Reminders:
The ten remaining men sing tonight on IDOL.
New drama series on NBC at 10. Made by the men who brought us THIRTYSOMETHING, but this features TWENTYSOMETHINGS. Has not gotten great reviews, and I don't plan to watch it.
CBS offers BIG BROTHER and another new episode of JERICHO.
-
I have a couple of TV based sets left in the review stack, and I'm expecting MAFIOSO from Criterion in the mail today, but as they are all to be released on March 19th, I plan to have a day of fun viewing for myself without taking notes, watching all bonus features, etc.
I'll be watching my first (atypical) Bollywood movie sent to me by the lovely DR MBarnum this afternoon. It's a family drama, or at least appears to be from the liner notes. I'll have more to say after I watch it.
-
Page Three Tin Man, Scarecrow, Dorothy, and Lion Dance!!!
-
I also have last night's OLD CHRISTINE to watch today.
Tonight, I'll probably select either an HD-DVD or Blu-ray to watch, again completely for fun.
I plan to record IDOL and then begin speeding through it at 9 to eliminate commercials and all the judges' haranguing
-
Have been reading a little bit about tesseracts and the fourth dimension.

A couple of things to keep in mind when watching the movie, DR MattH...people in Bollywood films never (or very rarely) kiss in films...and when someone calls someone brother, sister, uncle, etc, it doesn't necessarily mean they are related...just that they like that person and now think of them as a relation, it is a sign of affection, friendship, and/or respect.
That was Bollywood 101. Now you are ready!

BK, though you had the perfect Yonni and Zubrick previously, it will be interesting to see what new things different actors will bring to those roles.
From talking to DR Cason when I was in Los Angeles, he is quite busy right now so it is certainly understandable that he would not be able to commit to this show at this time.

...people in Bollywood films never (or very rarely) kiss in films...
I find it a very curious dichotomy. In the clips you've posted over the months, actors in Bollywood films seem to dance, move, and act very suggestively. But then you read your comment above, or the news flap about Richard Gere, and you have to wonder...
So pretty much anything goes in Bollywood, as long as there is no actual touching?

DR George - Yes, it was/is the same Ryan Raftery, although I'm not sure his "true comedic talent" was truly on display when he was standing on top of his bar stool singing along to and re-enacting "Defying Gravity" and "Don't Rain On My Parade". ;)

I was just wondering - do people actually come into auditions, plunk down a machine, and sing to pre-recorded tracks? Isn't that frowned upon?
There are a couple of people who offer that service. In fact, I sort of do myself, however, the tracks are truly meant for rehearsal purposes and not audition or performance purposes.
Singing with pre-recorded tracks is generally frowned upon, and, in the case of "standard" Equity auditions, it is actually not permitted. Although, for some situations it's allowed and part of their process - just make sure to have your CD cued up!!!!!!
Strangely enough, I've noticed that a lot of college programs actually prefer(?) that students audition for the program with a pre-recorded track. In other words, they don't provide an accompanist for their prospective students. -I've noticed that set-up at the auditions for Tisch that have been taking place over the past couple of weeks here in town. I know that that scenario is most likely a result of logistic and budgetary constraints, but, frankly, imho, I think it's a horrible way to start off your college journey. -Especially since you would most definitely not be singing with a tape during the course of your studies.

DR JRand ~ You're a planetary wizard -- I had an exciting and interesting and creativity-provoking and thought-provoking meeting yesterday with Ellen Bailey who agreed to be my assistant director for my thesis presentaion of O'Neill's one-act Thirst. She is now retired here in Prescott, but has many years of experience from her association with the Pasadena Playhouse. We were so on the same page for many of the things I have envisioned for this one-act, so I'm really fired up and feel my last year of study and research and practicum work were on the money, which is most rewarding. When I told her I planned to do it theatre-in-the-round, and was talking about the book I had read about that by Margo Jones, Ellen knew Margo and the man Jones worked with -- it was just so cool -- I had that sense of experiencing theatrical history, experience and knowledge during my meeting with Ellen. I'm so excited to get to work with her and feel this fits in so well with what my whole goal and purpose was with this thesis Master journey. She's like 80, but you wouldn't know it cause she's so spunky and sharp as a tack. She is going to be such an asset! Thirst is such a challenge, but with her to help me, I think I can pull it off... now if I can just cast the right folks .... fingers crossed!

My gosh, that's interesting! I have never been to an audition where prerecorded music was allowed. If the person didn't bring prepared sheet music, they were asked to sing a capella.

As for the Topic of the Day...
After years of dealing with the Traffic Mess known as the "Capital Beltway", I just learned to deal with it, more or less. I gave up trying to figure out if there was any logic or pattern to the slow-downs and speed-ups - all that thinking would just contribute to my frustration and blood pressure. Like many other things in Life, Traffic Happens. ;)
-
HHW is getting very metaphysical today. :)
-
Worst Traffic Ever: Naples, Italy. I suppose it's no better now than it ever was, but it was particularly wacky and wild in the 1970s. Most Italians drove cars the size (or smaller) of VW Beetles. Four-lane roads in busy areas routinely (that's ROUTINELY) became a maze of six or seven lanes going in EACH direction...including lanes of cars "passing" on the sidewalks.
It had a funky kind of rhythm to it...and no one ever got more than scraped or dented in the hustle/bustle of it all.
But you had to seriously adapt your brain to the uniqueness of it or you were apt to freak out.
-
TOD:
I think that traffic in the Washington area can be explained by an attitude of "I'M IMPORTANT! MOVE OVER!" or just "ME FIRST, ALWAYS."
As someone said to me the other day, "At least in LA drivers are more courteous."
OK, that's not a scientific explanation, but it's the best I can do at short notice!

Traffic may happen, but the Virginia Department of Transportation doesn't help. We have a great many visitors to this area--some are tourists, some are business people, plus many are recently-arrived cab drivers--and the signage, IMO, is awful. Coming from California, I couldn't believe how poor much of the highway design was here. I know that California roads aren't what they used to be, but California roads used to be far superior.
OK, OK, Jose hit one of my buttons. End of rant.

Hmmm... They're showing coverage of the police raid that's still currently going on here in NYC's Chinatown - they've raided a whole slew of stores for selling counterfeit goods. I just have to wonder: Why now? What took them so long? and Will it really do any good? I mean, most of those vendors down on Canal never truly claim to be selling the "real thing". ???

It had a funky kind of rhythm to it...and no one ever got more than scraped or dented in the hustle/bustle of it all.
But you had to seriously adapt your brain to the uniqueness of it or you were apt to freak out.
Italian traffic! Yikes! Total chaos! "Seriously adapt your brain" is an understatement!

There is plenty of touching and romancing in Bollywood films, but kissing on the lips is just off limits for the most part. Kissing other places on the body seems to be perfectly fine, however.
Pre-partition, kissing was more commonplace in Hindi films (particularly in the films of the 1920s and 30s) but after India won independence it is was considered very western to be kissing in public, and India was quite fed up with British anything at that point, and so it was sort of looked down upon to kiss in movies.
However, you will still find kissing in some Bollywood movies...but it is considered tawdry....wherein guys walking around in their underwear and women with most of their cleavage showing is perfectly Ok it would seem! LOL!
And after watching so many Bollywood movies, when I do see someone kiss in a Hindi film I get almost embarressed and a little shocked! LOL!

Playtime is over for this kid. I need to get some work done.

While I was in the process of waking up today, I was listening to the reports from the North Korean concerts of the New York Philharmonic...
February 27, 2008
Philharmonic Plays in North Korea
By DANIEL J. WAKIN
PYONGYANG, North Korea — As the New York Philharmonic played the opening notes of “Arirang,” a beloved Korean folk song, a murmur rippled through the audience. Many of the staid spectators at this historic concert on Tuesday night perched forward in their seats.
The piccolo sang a long, plaintive melody, cymbals crashed, harp runs flew up, the violins soared. And tears formed in the eyes of the sober audience, row upon row of men in dark suits and women in colorful traditional dresses, all of them wearing pins of Kim Il-sung, the nation’s founding leader.
And there, the Philharmonic had them. The stirring performance of a piece of music deeply resonant for both North and South Koreans ended the concert in triumph.
“This is difficult to describe,” said one journalist’s government-assigned minder, who was sitting in the audience. “My heart is booming. It’s too exciting.”
The audience applauded for more than five minutes, and orchestra members, some of them crying, waved.
People in the seats cheered and waved back, reluctant to let the visiting Americans leave.
“Was that an emotional experience!” said Jon Deak, a bass player, moments after the concert ended. “It’s an incredible joy and sadness and connection like I’ve never seen. They really opened their hearts to us.”
The “Arirang” rendition also proved moving for the orchestra’s eight members of Korean origin.
“It brought tears to my eyes,” said Michelle Kim, a violinist whose parents moved from North Korea to Seoul during the Korean War and who later moved to the United States.
...I started crying too.

Salem street traffic is horrid...the streets here are set up very poorly and thus everything is very slow going most everywhere in town.
The freeway is fine, until you get up towards Portland then it looks just like the Ventura Freeway except that people here use their turn signals and allow you to change lanes.
Up here the slowdowns on the freeway are normally due to the merging of traffic from off ramps. Slows things to a crawl during the busy times.

All this talk about traffic this morning...
I Love New York! ;)

Two other variables can also contribute to the disruption of traffic: Weather and man-made accidents

I feel like living in this building is a Joseph McCarthy time capsule: last night after the Fed Ex cartons had departed, my neighbor Steve, who's paranoid as Jaymie about a bedbug infestation, asked me last night if I'd been using the laundry in the basement. Maria on the fourth floor had told him there were bedbugs in the washers.
So, this morning, I ran wash cycles of heavy bleach and detergent with no clothes through both washers before doing my laundry. I think it's all crap, but I also am concerned about what appears to be a bedbug witch hunt.
I just spoke to a friend, an opera singer in a town outside Manhattan, who just went through a lice scare with her daughter: she said it was a complete madhouse with children ostracized and madness of neighbors. Oy!

If you have a friend who is a lawyer, you might consider having some sort of "cease and desist" order issued to various tenants about their coming to you about this bed bug business.
This is clearly NOT your fault and they need to understand that any infestation THEY may encounter will have derived from a source similar to the one that caused yours. It's a building management issue and it needs to be removed from your shoulders immediately, even if legal action is necessary.
Your neighbors are shit-heels and don't deserve any further consideration from you.
-
DR elmore - What about the other tenants in the building who had bed bugs BEFORE you? Are they getting the same type of paranoia-prompted treatment?
*And if anyone can find a totally bug-free - bed bugs or otherwise - laundry room in NYC, well... ;)

I will draft a letter to the building management. It's all so ridiculous.

That's a good question, and I don't know the answer. I'm both amused and concerned over all of this anxiety.
When I was at the height of the problem here, one morning at the large laundromat down the street where I was washing verything daily I watched a homeless lady putting everything in her bags into the dryers to dry them off from the damp and cold. I was paranoid about head and crab lice for over a week afterwards.
-
(((((Elmore))))
-
Both of my opportunities to be fascinating today have been cancelled. My morning database coaching appointment cancelled because she's sick and the class from Cedarville University is not allowed to leave campus in a snowstorm.
-
Maybe Karma will strike and the paranoid neighbors will get it and you can shake your head at them..
A person can get anything at anytime. The mobility of Americans makes such infestation much easier to happen.

Another day will come Ginny <G>

OOH!!!!
Well, I thought I had some auditions to play this afternoon, but after taking a look at my iCalendar, and realizing I had not fully updated it since the last volley of e-mails, well... Another day off. :)
-
So... DR elmore - Since I'm off today... Movie? Dinner? Ringing neighbor's doorbells and running? ;)

I really don't have a lot of experience of heavy urban traffic for it tends to be a non-issue up here. My experiences have been limited to the Twin Cities and Winnipeg. The funniest experience was when DBF and I were coming back from the cities Memorial Day weekend last year... It was entertaining to say the least... We went to Albertville, an outlet mall, on the way back and when left to head back to FArgo there was a 10 mile backup of traffic going east towards the Twin Cities on I94... It was amusing.
The only other time DBF and I experienced heavier traffic was when we went to a freinds wedding in Stevens Point, WI this past October. We tried to avoid I 94 going into through the cities for a lot of traffic was re-routed on that due to the I35W bridge being out. We also got to the Cities about the time rush hour was starting. Trying to be a helpful navigator I suggested another route to take us to the northern suburbs to avoid Mpls and St. Paul. We were trucking along merrily until we ran into a construction accident near White Bear Lake. After the person got his bobcat extricated from the spot he was in, we continued right along. I was pleasantly surprised at how fast we actually moved. We picked up I-94 at the Woodbury interchange and continued east.
I will say one thing, some North Dakotans from rural areas are clueless of how to drive in a more urban setting.
-
One thing that baffled me when I was in the Boston area visiting freinds a number of years ago was the penchant of double parking in South Boston.
They had a small nor'easter when I was there and people pulled chairs, couches, trash cans and anything else to hold their cleaned parking spot after they pulled out in South Boston neighborhoods.
-
Another day will come Ginny <G>
Yup, midday tomorrow when I'm the scheduled speaker for the Dayton chapter of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives). I'm taking all my materials and handouts with me tonight, in case we have a delayed opening tomorrow like we had last Friday. Then I could go directly to the venue to start my workday.

DR Jose, I'm waiting to hear from Charlotte about possibly doing something this afternoon. Later, I have a date for dinner with my friend Val.

And a gentle reminder for any Starbucks-inclined DRs...
All Starbucks locations will be closed today from 5:30-8:30 for "corporate re-training".
*I'm tempted to head down to Times Square just to see all the people bumping into the locked doors. ;) -As well, as the extra business at Dunkin' Donuts - which happens to be offering extra perks today as a sort of counter-promotion.

Elmore, I hope you and the fair Charlotte have a lovely afternoon.

NOt a big fan of Starbucks... Prefer Dunn Bros., Gloria Jeans or Bear Claw... There is a local shop I like really well, Atomic Coffee.

Belated post; Fave Hitchcock is NOTORIOUS...Driving pattern I like is long highway trip where one can listen to lots of plays and music. The Oscar Broadcast was so dull, I kept switching over to the L&O SUV Marathon. They recently added some rotaries here in the Ann Arbor area, which has some people freaked out, but I got practice driving in and out of Boston as a teenager...I hope at next years Oscars the film IN BRUGES gets some notice. About two Irish hit men stranded in Belgium,it contains lotsa violence and off color language, including a word that I gather pops up in Mrs Ensler's MONOLOGUES, but in Brit films seems to be used mostlyy gangsters(male)shouting it at one another.

No word from Charlotte. she may be in dance class o up to Horace Mann to see friends.
I love Fed Ex tracking. 42 of the 43 cartons are in Lewiston, PA at the moment. It looks as if one got delayed but is now in transit to join the others.

That's very much like the driving advice I got from a New York City cab driver: Never use your rear-view mirror. -As soon as you look to see who's behind you, you will most likely hit the person, car, truck, pole in front of you. Truly some of the best driving advice I've ever gotten, and when I would drive in the city - and I LOVED driving in NYC (yes, I'm crazy) - just keeping my eyes on what was going on in front of me always made my life easier. -Oh, and my right hand ever-ready to hit the horn too. ;)
-
I do understand the problems of snow and urban parking.
Just the other day, I came home to find the street spot that I always park in, and had spent considerable time "clearing" from last week's storm, occupied by an unfamiliar car.

I'm so glad that Maureen McGovern's new late 60's cabaret set is being recorded!

I'm so glad that Maureen McGovern's new late 60's cabaret set is being recorded!
She was just at the Metropolitan Room here in NYC, and I meant to head down there to catch her new show. I thought they were going to try to do a live recording of her show at one time, but I guess she's heading into the studio. -Although, I wouldn't mind a live studio recording like she did for her Gershwin album.

Always. It's the carry over from when they used to have actual glass-enclosed shower stalls behind the bar. Some of the "wandering bartenders" also wear speedos, but some also wear jeans and a tank top or just jeans and no top.

And "married" couples are always welcome at Splash (http://www.splashbar.com). ;)

I have been to storage, found the chart I was looking for without too much trouble, have had a motor car smog check for the DMV renewal (so different now - even two years ago we had to put the proof of successful smog check AND the insurance in the envelope with the renewal fees, but now insurance and smog check are done electronically directly to the DMV. So, that's all taken care of and I suppose I'll have my new tags in a couple of weeks, even though they're not really necessary until end of April.

I have the entire recording of her last effort as Rose. HER VOICE IS HARD ON THE EARS. I've tried to find something to like, I realy have. She has no sense of the subtle and is so strident. She is not Mama Rose. She is Mama Patti. Just as she was not Nellie in Sweeney - she was Patti. At least in Candide they acknowledged the fact that she was not the Old Woman - just Patti.
-
BK just mentioned having to get a smog check. I just got the requisite safety check on my car last week (they checked the car, but not the driver). I'm often amazed at how much of my time is spent doing little things like this.

I began my afternoon with last night's OLD CHRISTINE. A few bright lines, but the writers certainly didn't get much action out of her involvement with Mr. Harris (Blair Underwood).
-
Next, I watched, courtesy of DR MBarnum, MY BROTHER MIKHAIL. A touching AIDS story, reminiscent in parts of PHILADELPHIA and AN EARLY FROST. I wanted to throttle both of those parents, but they did eventually come around. And it did make me weep in several places.
A couple of questions, DR MBarnum:
Is it customary for actors in Bollywood movies to speak a mixture of (I assume) Hindi and English? I was expecting to fully need subtitles, but the language is this quaint mixture.
Are those the actors who are singing or are the voices dubbed by professional vocalists?
Certainly there were some nice ballads inserted into this very sad story.

It is quite common for them to speak "Hinglish", as it is sometimes referred to. Most everyone in India who is educated can speak English and it would seem to be popular to mix in a bit of English with your Hindi...sort of how some English speakers will mix in French phrases.
The actors are usually only lip syncing to the songs, it is not there own voice...although there are a handful of actors who do sing, but very few.
And of course there is a wonderful CD soundtrack to MY BROTHER NIKHIL.
Glad you got to watch your first Bollywood MattH...and I hope you get to the other DVD someday soon...it is the one with the song and dance numbers like out of a Busby Berkley musical (plus one the guys is super hot!!)

Where has this day gone?

I'm certainly rested sufficiently to stay awake through the evening .... until at least 10.

Good Evening!
...Or I could just stay here in the apartment and cook... Brown Rice... Roasted Carrots and Fennel... Hot Italian Turkey Sausages simmered along with a nice Puttanesca Sauce...
Ah, yes.....whore's pasta!
Are you using anchovies?
-
Wouldn't that be something....DR MBarnum in India.
Imagine the photos we'd get posted here!
-
I wonder if I could stay on John Abraham's fire escape?
You could send him some of your tear sheets (or, if that term means nothing to you, "clippings" of your previous stories) and tell him you'd love to do a story on him for U.S. Bollywood fans. Perhaps he'd offer to spend a bit of time with you.

Would the "no kissing" rule still apply?

Yes! It's necessary for the Italian version of umami.

OH... And back to Oscar Night... Well, after the Oscar Ceremony...
Did anyone else catch the new video that Jimmy Kimmel and Ben Affleck put together with all those guest stars (Harrison Ford and Josh Groban among others)? Truly one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. -Yes, it's a bit creepy and crude at times, but, still, I was most definitely laughing out loud. I shall refrain from posting a link here, but I'm sure it could be found by entering the appropriate search engine terms. ;D
-
Re that video - Are Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel actually a couple?
-
I wonder if I could stay on John Abraham's fire escape?
I doubt it. I'm sure your reputation precedes you.
-
I guess I could google to find out, but it's easier to ask here.
-
Imagine the photos we'd get posted here!
They'd all be similar to this:
-
Last night I watched a film on DVD entitled The Fan, starring Lauren Bacall and James Garner from 1981. Not a great film, but the kitsch factor was fun. Features a few songs by Marvin Hamlisch and Tim Rice.
"I wanted hearts, not diamonds," she breathily sang.
-
Re that video - Are Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel actually a couple?
Yes...they have been a couple for several years.
-
No word from my beloved Charlotte, so I guess it's dinner with Val instead.
Back later . . .
DR elmore dines with MOSES!
-
Would the "no kissing" rule still apply?
Oh, for certain. MBarnum's lips could do anything BUT kiss him.

Lines of cars on a freeway behave very much like a string, loosely strung with beads, in motion.
I'm sure David Krumholtz could explain it better, and with neat graphics :D

All 43 cartons are now en route to Ohio, so it's now out of my hands.
Such a relief!!!
Sleep well tonight :)

Watching "American Idol".... Hmm.... Hmm...
-
Well, I'm off. I want to work on my music before rehearsal tonight...which would be a good thing. ;)
Tomorrow, I have another doctor's appointment to see if I need antibiotics for my coughing and wheezing, which has not gone away. It's better, but it's still driving me crazy. If it's viral and they can't give me antibiotics, I'll just have to deal with it. :P But at least I'll have gotten a second opinion. :-\

We're having an onslaught of horrific weather here! Rain. Freezing rain. Sleet. Snow flurries. Snow showers. Snow accumulation. Accidents. Traffic back-ups. More snow. More snow to come overnight.
On the bright side, I could post from Brewski's tonight; there wasn't a password screen to get onto the net.
On the brighter side, I received a commendation from Borders corporate for my "outstanding work in January;" I got a nice certificate, letter, gift card (money to spend at Borders) AND, in the near future, LUNCH with our store's general manager!
On the dim side, I'm doubling at Borders tomorrow, and the early morning commute is not looking so very hot. . . .

Time to close down the store.

Breaking news:
Der Brucer is watching the Kareoke Kontest on Fox.
::)
-
I am watching the debate, but since it's MSNBC - I'm sure it will be softball questions to Obama and woman bashing comments to Clinton. If that happens I will have to attempt to avoid puking on my computer.
-
Traffic may happen, but the Virginia Department of Transportation doesn't help.
Sounds much like New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
I don't understand how anyone can become a cab driver without knowing the territory. There should be some sort of test for this.
-
Tomorrow at 8 AM JJ will be delivered to the local Pet Supply Store where he will meet up with an agent from "Just Us Animal Rescue" who will transport him to a shelter in Maryland where he will be fixed and then paraded to various suburban Petsmart stores for adoption. They assured me that if they can not place him a a good home, he will be returned to us.
der Brucer
Only, since he'll be fixed by then, not all of him will be returned.
Mrrrow!!!

Traffic lasts about a minute here everyday. Not a big deal. In Phoenix, I used to have to leave two hours early just to get to work on time. I hated it

Darn, the video wouldn't load. I'll try it later.
Did you read about the cellist who grew up in an orphanage in Romania. There were three boys from Korea in his class who were returned to their home country. The cellist hopes to find them. I find it interesting the rest of his class has kept in touch.
I hope there is a happy ending to the story.

Re: Traffic Patterns.
In three of the four local grocery stores, the basic traffic patterns circles counterclockwise. Only at the local Safeway does the traffic pattern circle clockwise.
Safeway is the store that is having trouble attracting customers. Most people attribute this to how the store looks dark, and claustrophobic. I don't. I attribute it to how the anti-clockwise patterns confuses people. We're so used to looking at stores, turning our heads from left to right (following the pattern of how we read), that when faced with a store that demands we turn our heads from right to left is bothersome.
Making things worse is how, at the Safeway, the outside wall has absolutely nothing there for stretches of walking/circleing time. It's like staring at a blank page. Lots of possibilities, but that's not what I'm shopping for.
At all four stores, btw, the customer is invited to start their shopping in the produce section. Frankly, I don't shop in that pattern. I start with selecting my protein (meat), followed by the veg and starch. But that's just me.
-
DR Elmore - in your letter, use that middle paragraph from DR Ron's post.
{{{{{HUGS}}}}}
I agree. Be nice, even though they weren't. Let them know how hard you have worked to get rid of your problem. If you hadn't worked so hard they might not even know about it.
Your neighbors concerns are understandable, their attitudes & nastiness are not.
-
Dinner tonight (in defiance of what I just wrote, because the protein was in the freezer downstairs) -
Venison steaks
Baked taters
Leftover onion soup

They didn't :o I also drove those in the Boston area. In rush hour you could get trapped in them ;D
Where in Boston are you from? We lived in Acton for two years. The rotary I drove the most was the one outside Concord, near the prison. I think that was the location.

DR Elmore - I was trying to tell DH Richard about your 43 cartons and could not remember what they contain and where at Miami it's going.

Aw, but Ginny!
No, more seriously, I don't care for Swanson's any more. The stuff tastes like it comes from a tin can, even when it's from the box.
There are better brands out there. My personal favorite is Kitchen Basics (http://www.kitchenbasics.net/). It's pricey, but worth it when it comes to the flavor. And Kitchen Basics doesn't have all the additives I regularly find in the other brands. Not to mention it's salt content isn't as high.

I've noticed that not all stores as part of the same chain arrange their stores the same way. There are three Harris Teeter stores in Arlington, and each one is set up differently - although I think that has to do where the bakery and freezers ended up getting set up. I've noticed the same thing with Safeways, Giants, etc. Even my beloved Ukrop's has different set-up for their stores. -Although, I sort of discovered that Ukrop's design their stores around the placement of their in-store cafes and grills. Do I find it confusing? No, because...
As for my own personal shopping pattern, I always start with any canned and boxed goods, basically nothing that needs refrigeration or freezer-ation. Then I make a quick round of the more perishable items before heading to the check out registers. Gotta keep the cold stuff cold.

OH! And NYC grocery stores... OY!
However, I think I'm in love with the "cold room" at the big Fairway up near my 'hood. Instead of refrigerator cases, they literally have one big cold room: dairy, meats, etc. In the summer, they even hand out coats when you go in! :)

DR’s George & Singdaw, feel better vibes!

I have just listened to a wonderful train wreck: Sutton Foster and Marc Kudish, on BROADWAY UNPLUGGED VOLUME 2, trying to sing "Anything You Can Do," and flubbing lyrics, improvising and being totally hilarious.

I still can't figure out the two television shows that DR JMK was talking about yesterday....hmmmmmmmmmmm
Off to work.
There was another Alfred Hitchcock Presents that I remember I watched while staying at my Aun't house when I was quite young (under 50). From then on, I always associated that scary TV episode with that house. In the episode this guy was bet that he couldn't survive the night in this attic room with only a candle and three matches.... Sound familiar to anyone?

TOD: Once we were driving on the I-17 in Phoenix. We were at a dead stop, then inched forward. For about 45 minutes. We finally got to the obstruction: a coat. Yes, there was a coat in the road. After that, we sped up to 65 mph.
Almost as bad as finding a fork in the road!

That's he in the flesh!
He has been in some big films (TERMINATOR, ALIENS), but sad to say he never had the star career I would have envisioned for him.

I have no idea! I really don't care for one.
I've been watching THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY; I forgot the Beaver was in the cast. I love Mildred Natwick. I got to know her briefly before she died.
-
Do they sell any Rollex watches (with the two Ls)? I have always wanted to find one of those. I looked all over Hong Kong and all I found were real Rolex's with real Rolex prices.
-
It looks like Lupone's Gypsy may get recorded.
We'll have to pre-order a copy for DR Tomovoz. ;)
I also don't care for Ms LuPone. However, I would go see her in GYPSY. I think the role is perfect for her.

Had a very full evening of viewing.
I began by finishing NOTES FROM A SCANDAL. Excellent performances, held my interest throughout. Glad I saw it.
But I DO NOT and will NEVER understand teachers attracted to students. It happened at the school where I taught, too, and the whole idea just infuriates and sickens me.
-
Next, I put on the "final cut" of BLADE RUNNER on Blu-ray. It is different from the director's cut which I've had on laserdisc for a long time. The thing I noticed was how much new footage they've added to the front of the movie. Rutger Hauer used to kiss and then murder his creator before the first hour was over. In this final cut of the film, it's now almost 85 minutes into the movie before that happens. I still have about 20 minutes to go in it.
-
Next, I watched tonight's NCIS. It's from this season and I hadn't seen it, so I enjoyed seeing what was to me a new episode.
-
Next I watched AMERICAN IDOL in about 40 minutes (it was a 90 minute broadcast tonight) by recording it and then excising all commercials, filler, etc.
A little better show than last week though I still think it's a weak men's field overall. I did like David Hernandez's song tonight and the other David who sang the John Lennon song to close the show tonight. Apart from those two, any of the men could be sent home, and I wouldn't care.
-
I flipped channels until the next show I wanted to watch came on. Looks like a lean week on premium paycable. I didn't see a single movie I was interested in recording.
And I will be glad when TCM's 31 Days of Oscar is over. Yes, they show a lot of great movies, but they're all the classics. I like TCM best for the movies that aren't so award-winning and well known, and those get pushed aside during their Oscar-tribute month.
-
JERICHO had a tense episode again tonight. Only 4 episodes remain.

I'm sure JJ will do fine, DerBrucer. He is handsome and friendly. He should go pretty fast. You did a good thing rescuing him. I hope he gets a home with a school-age child. :)

Laura - Your quote from the ER reminds me of that lovely MAD Magazine line by a nurse: "Wake up, it's time for your sleeping pill."

LOL, FJL.

Is it page 12 yet?

Back from evening two of auditions. We saw some really excellent females tonight, but virtually almost no men. At this point, I don't even know if I have one contender for the male ensemble. Apparently we're seeing quite a few men for the roles tomorrow, but not sure if any of them are ensemble material - only time will tell.
-
My take on American Idol:
Top three:
David Archuleta - sang Imagine - clearly the best performance
Luke Menard - a Queen song
David Hernandez - Papa Was a Rolling Stone
Bottom three:
Jason Castro
Jason Yeagar
Danny Noriega (although his fey-boy charm will likely save him)
Safe for now: Michael Johns
der Brucer
Note - most of the contestants seem to be making poor song choices (songs you like may not be good performance numbers)
-
Driving time to the theater - got on freeway at 3:50 arrived 5:20.
Driving time home - got on freeway at 9:40 arrived 10:15. What's wrong with this picture?

Thankfully I was finally able to eject the CD that was stuck in the car player - it got a little scratched coming out, but it seems to be playing fine in the home player. I'll transfer it into iPod shortly - a wonderful Japanese import CD of Jackie Trent and Tony Hatch singing.

That picture is as should be expected.
The route you take to the theatre is a prime commuter route -regularly log-jammed east-bound from 3-7 daily. (Many LA area workers commute daily to/from Orange county and the Inland Empire.)
The westbound route home is usually clear every evening, save Sunday, after 8 PM. (The evening traffic is already in LA and the long distance travelers are down for the night.)
der Brucer
-
I'm afraid that until someone explains to me how one minute you are in bumper to bumper log-jammed traffic and ten seconds later you are doing seventy, and then two minutes later you are in bumper to bumper traffic again, and then thirty seconds later you are zooming along then I shan't believe any of your explanations.
And I simply do not understand how 1000s of people in cars get off work at three.
-
Welcome fourteen GUESTS.
-
I'll be curious to know the outcome, DR George. My similar symptoms are now entering their third week. I can't take much more of this!
Don't worry...I'll let you know.
-
I'm afraid that until someone explains to me how one minute you are in bumper to bumper log-jammed traffic and ten seconds later you are doing seventy, and then two minutes later you are in bumper to bumper traffic again, and then thirty seconds later you are zooming along then I shan't believe any of your explanations.
Let me try again:
"Something" up ahead has casued traffic to slow/stop; cars pile up. The first car in line resumes speed, the second car waits a momemnt then it too resumes speed, leaving an appropriate gap between cars one and two. The log jam then starts to unwind, a car at a time until it is your turn, the car ahead moves out, you wait a moment, step on the gas and are off and running. They "something" else happens up ahead, a car slows/stops and the accordian cycle of lines of cars coming to a stop, waiting, and then resuming speed repeats.
You don't have to understand the math to accept the reality of its ability to explain the traffic's behavior. I suspect you do not have a firm grasp on aerodynamics, but still accept that the plane will fly!

Thankfully I was finally able to eject the CD that was stuck in the car player - it got a little scratched coming out, but it seems to be playing fine in the home player. I'll transfer it into iPod shortly - a wonderful Japanese import CD of Jackie Trent and Tony Hatch singing.
Speaking of CDs, I got a package of two CDs in the mail from our very own BK! Thanks! I'll listen to them tomorrow at work :D

And I simply do not understand how 1000s of people in cars get off work at three.
Perhaps you don't appreciate the workingmen's schedule.
Hundreds of establishments follow a two or three shift work day that runs 7AM-3PM, 3PM-11PM and 11PM to 7AM - ask any nurse! To avoid these travel times, other business work shifts like 8-4, 9-5, or 10-6. So, in the afternoon hours we generally have four surges of entering traffic at 3,4,5, and 6. The eastbound traffic starts to thin out just about the time the Inland Empire folks start their westerly trek to the dining/entertainment venues of LA.
And come the weekend, there are only 7 basic ways out of the basin: 4 headed east(the 210, 10, 60 and 91;two headed North (the 5 and the 101); and one headed south (the 5). All the others, like the 405 and 605 are just bypass spurs to the main arteries.
