Dutton's shelf life finally runs out

The Brentwood shop, which has a special place in literary L.A., plans to close its doors April 30.

By Martha Groves and Scott Timberg, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
February 26, 2008

Mired in debt and uncertain about the future of his current location, Doug Dutton said Monday that he will close his iconic Brentwood bookstore, where thousands of authors have celebrated their works in the central courtyard and readers such as Dustin Hoffman and Meg Ryan have sought counsel on stocking their bookshelves.

Dutton's, which plans to close April 30, is one of many independent bookstores that have disappeared in the last couple of decades. Rising rents, the growth of big-box chains and the triumph of Amazon.com as a major force have challenged the indies.

But Dutton's has a national reputation, a following among authors who appeared at its many readings and, for its two decades of history, a special place in literary Los Angeles.

Many considered it the most literary and high-minded of L.A.'s bookstores, as well as one that felt increasingly, if charmingly, anachronistic.

" ‘Welcome to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, Daniel.... "

" ‘This is a place of mystery, Daniel, a sanctuary. Every book, every volume you see here, has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it. Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens. This place was already ancient when my father brought me here for the first time, many years ago. Perhaps as old as the city itself. Nobody knows for certain how long it has existed, or who created it. I will tell you what my father told me, though. When a library disappears, or a bookshop closes down, when a book is consigned to oblivion, those of us who know this place, its guardians, make sure that it gets here. In this place, books no longer remembered by anyone, books that are lost in time, live forever, waiting for the day when they will reach a new reader’s hands.’ "

I am back, but it has been a rocky few days for me. I had a heart scare (I am fine now) and was in the hospital for tests. I hope I never have to got through that again. But a life style change is needed and I know it is going to be heard to adjust.

The Oscars require major surgery

Time for the Hollywood treatment -- a face-lift.
By Patrick Goldstein, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
February 26, 2008

IT'S now painfully obvious that the Oscars need what nearly every aging star in Hollywood has already had -- a face-lift.

The ratings for the show couldn't have been any worse if they'd been stuck with all of Jay Leno's strike-show guests instead of Jon Stewart and Co. The numbers hit rock bottom, down a million viewers from 2003, the show's previous low ebb, and that was right after a war started. Even worse, the ratings for younger viewers dropped off a cliff, falling almost 25% from last year's telecast. The film academy elders should be very, very worried. If Fox doesn't have a best picture nominee next year, they'll probably cook up a nighttime NASCAR special hosted by Jessica Alba, run it opposite the Academy Awards and do some serious damage.

By now you've probably heard all the same excuses. The show was hurt by a host of downbeat, little-seen movies. The show was damaged by the bad vibes from the writers strike. Stewart doesn't cut it with a mass audience.

Phooey. The writers strike didn't hurt movie box office, so why would it damage the Academy Awards? The academy could've given 10 nominations to "Transformers," but does anyone really think having Shia LaBeouf on stage would turn the Oscars into a youthquake? As for Stewart, who seemed slightly defanged for my tastes, whether a host kills or bombs doesn't lure anyone new to watch the Oscars any more than hiring a replacement for Katie Couric would ever get me to watch the " CBS Evening News."

THAT brings us to the academy's real problem. Like the evening news broadcasts, the Oscar is a relic, a cobwebby holdover from a bygone media age when Big Events earned Big Audiences. Those days are going, going, gone. The Grammys' ratings were down, the Emmys were down, the Golden Globes would've been down even if it hadn't been eviscerated by the strike.

Younger audiences just don't believe in appointment viewing anymore. Their lives are full -- they don't stop what they're doing to watch Oscar night. The only show that's held its ratings is the Super Bowl, which had at least three things the Oscars lacked: inventive, state-of-the-art production; a whole second show inside of the show -- splashy new commercials, which are often more involving than the game itself; and a far more suspenseful fourth quarter. Is there really anyone in America who didn't get best picture, best director and three of the four acting awards right in their Oscar pool?

More teenagers ignoring CDs, report says

48% of teenagers bought no CDs at all in 2007, up from 38% in 2006. Music downloads continue to grow, though, with iTunes leading the way.

By Michelle Quinn and Andrea Chang, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
February 27, 2008

SAN FRANCISCO -- Going to the mall to buy music may no longer be a rite of passage for adolescents.

For the first time last year, nearly half of all teenagers bought no compact discs, a dramatic increase from 2006, when 38% of teens shunned such purchases, according to a new report released Tuesday.

The illegal sharing of music online continued to soar in 2007, but there was one sign of hope that legal downloading was picking up steam. In the last year, Apple Inc.'s iTunes store, which sells only digital downloads, jumped ahead of Best Buy Co. to become the No. 2 U.S. music seller, trailing Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

That could be hopeful news for the music industry, which has been scrambling in recent years to replace its rapidly disappearing CD sales with music sold online. The number of CDs sold in the U.S. fell 19% in 2007 from the previous year while sales of digital songs jumped 45%, Nielsen SoundScan said.

The number of people buying music legally from online music stores jumped 21% to 29 million last year from 24 million in 2006, according to the study by NPD Group, a market research firm in Port Washington, N.Y.

NPD declined to release figures on individual retailers' sales or their market shares, so it is impossible to know how close iTunes sales are to Wal-Mart's. The NPD market ranking of music retailers is based on a study of the music habits of Americans 13 and older over the last week.

The report, which involved 5,000 people who answered questions online, highlighted a generational split. The increase in legal online sales was driven by people 36 to 50, the report said, giving the music industry an opportunity to target these customers by tapping into its older catalogs.

That's not to say iTunes is not popular with the younger set. Mallory Portillo, 24, an executive assistant in Santa Monica, said she hadn't bought a CD in five years, but typically spent more than $100 a month buying music online. She will turn to illegal music sharing sites only if she can't find new releases or more obscure music on iTunes, she said.

Hunter Conrad, an eighth-grader at Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica, says she downloads about 80% of her music from iTunes, "but when it's an artist I really like, I'll buy the original CD."

Out of her group of friends, she's "one of the few" who still buy CDs, she said. Most of her buddies download for the convenience, to save money and to get only the songs they like.

"Nobody really wants the other songs [on an album]," Hunter, 14, said. "They just want the hits."

That last line - how sad. These kids will never have the thrill of discovering a favorite track on their own.

If I were to sort my CDs into 2 piles, one in which the 'lead song' was still my favorite, and the other where a different track became the one I loved the most, I suspect the second pile would be larger.

How would you handle the so-called craft awards? Eliminate them in toto? Keep the awards and kill the speeches?

Would you do anything to educate the audience? What is the difference between sound design and sound editing?

I just got my state tax refund. i will have to try this Bill Evans, of whom you speak, and maybe start in on the Kritzer novels, wherein i gather BK mentioned fave album covers of the old days. If it's not too repetitious, could you mention a few....Re re-issues, I think my hearing must be not that good. The only time i ever noticed any difference in sound was when they had the Columbia turned into SONY(now I don't know what it is) re-issue of House of Flowers. it was like going from a kiddie record player to a high fidelity stereo. I don't know what they did to it, but it sure sounded wonderful

Mini-rant:

What is it about tinted windows?  It seems like every other car and SUV on the road nowadays has windows so black that you can't see a thing.  I thought there were laws against this on behalf of police and safety?

I do understand people's desire for privacy, but I also think that sitting behind blackened windows also gives people the feeling of license to break traffic laws more freely, and to drive rudely and aggresively with impunity.

For Ask BK Day:

I just finished reading MURDER AT HOLLYWOOD HIGH.  I think it is your best book since the Kritzer trilogy and I hope Adrianas will be back to solve many more murders.

That said, I had one problem with the book which I would like you to throw a little light on.  Where did Adriana and Billy get all their spending money?  It is clearly stated that both are from low income families and it is never mentioned that either of them had after school jobs, so how could Adriana afford to constantly go to fast food restaurants after school, get a new outfit when she needed it and buy two orchestra seats for WICKED (which would have set her back about $200)?  And how did Billy afford a trip to New York and tickets for ten shows (not to mention seeing WICKED 13 times at the Pantages)?  While this in no way spoiled my enjoyment of the book, it did puzzle me a little.

Funny.  I hate Amanda more than anyone in the house.  Her incessant need for attention is pathetic.  She is as bad, IMO, as Sheila who has to stage an irrational drama every week, trash-talking anyone who comes to mind -- and for no reason other than that she, herself, is trash, but fancies herself "street smart/tough."

I don't get the hate for Jason Yeager on IDOL. Yes, I guess he's too white bread for the judges (but they DID pick him after all), but there's a purity and lilt in his voice that I rather like. His song last night was not worthy of the scathing pans it received, especially since the Johns guy who opened the show was very off pitch on many of the higher notes and didn't get put in his place for a really poor performance.

I guess I just feel bad for him because he's being penalized for not being edgier, rawer, more soulful, etc. He reminds me of John Davidson, not a great, inventive vocalist but a solid middle-of-the-road singer.

If yuo have a chance, my second article - this one about the Handel RADAMISTO played by Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra on authentic period instruments with countertenors this weekend - is up on www.FineArtsLA.com -- And I get free tickets to hear it. Nice gig!!!

Just yesterday, I got another awesome gig - I'm Music Director for a production of Complete Stage Beauty (the play from which the move Stage Beauty, with Billy Crudup was made), opening mid-April and playing through late May in West LA - nice little old theater, on Pico Blvd just west of La Brea - near enough BK's and my old neighborhood to have me waxing nostalgic, if not my car.

So, I'm putting together a small ensemble - probably just harpsichord, cello, two fiddles, with me on recorders - to play some Purcell and Blow. I even get to sing Dido's Lament!!! at the end of Act 1. Hoping to also play Mistress of Revels - but that may not happen.

Ah... That brings back memories of singing an early setting of "Cherry Ripe" in Song Literature class in college.  ;)

Cherry ripe, cherry ripe,
Ripe I cry,
Full and fair ones
Come and buy.
Cherry ripe, cherry ripe,
Ripe I cry,
Full and fair ones
Come and buy.

And then a setting of Thomas Campion's poem of the same name...

There is a garden in her face
Where roses and white lilies blow;
A heavenly paradise is that place,
Wherein all pleasant fruits do flow:
There cherries grow which none may buy
Till ‘Cherry-ripe’ themselves do cry.

Those cherries fairly do enclose
Of orient pearl a double row,
Which when her lovely laughter shows,
They look like rose-buds fill’d with snow;
Yet them nor peer nor prince can buy
Till ‘Cherry-ripe’ themselves do cry.

Her eyes like angels watch them still;
Her brows like bended bows do stand,
Threat’ning with piercing frowns to kill
All that attempt with eye or hand
Those sacred cherries to come nigh,
Till ‘Cherry-ripe’ themselves do cry.

-Interpret as you wish.  God know, my Song Lit teacher did.  I believe I even blushed.  ;)

The work inquiries keep coming in: the other day, Harvey Schmidt; last night, Patrick Cassidy and Jason Graae; today, the Lyric Stage, Irving, Texas, and Ron Raines.  Also, Planet X, and the usual suspects, LOS and BABES!  Of course, a couple of the inquiries haven't turned into real jobs.  WEHT Karen Mason?

DR singdaw and George and others still dealing with nasal issues - I remember when I was working on Eleanor down at Ford's Theatre, practically the whole company - except for me! - came down with some sort of pesky "cold".  And it just would not go away.  Thankfully, it never really impeded anyone's performance or performances, but it really was annoying.  The company manager at Ford's went ahead and made arrangements to have everyone checked out by the same doctor just to see if everyone had the same thing.  Well, some people did have the "common cold", others, it turned out, were having allergy issues.  However, a majority of people had what the doctored labeled as "IPND": Insidious Post-Nasal Drip.  -And I don't think I've ever seen a medical condition labeled "insidious" before or since then.  In any case...  A daily Vitamin-C booster, and a low-dose of Mucinex seemed to help keep things in check and clear it up eventually.

Yes DR derBRUCER - that congressional contest you mentioned is an interesting one.  It is for the seat of the late Congresswoman  Julia Carson, who had the WORSE attendance record in Congress.  Andre is her grandson.

It has been particularly difficult on the Carson family since she passed away,  because most of were on the government payroll.

I know Elrod, and he would be a great improvement, although he is a bit crazy....he would fit right in Washington, I think.  This is not my district, it is Marion County/Indianapolis.  The outcome will probably go to Carson, but it would be nice if it didn't.

In his case, we can more appropriately say that his voice has fallen silent.

Certainly a distict voice, in more ways than one.

Wasn't it Patrick who kicked Robert Preston when he and Shirley were making the film version of THE MUSIC MAN - Robert didn't know Shirley was expecting a baby until they were filming the Footbridge scene....

I think Shirley told the story on THE MUSIC MAN DVD extras (edited by DR EDISAURUS)....and Patrick told the story as related to him by Preston years later....

RE: Trendy small plates

It wasn't that long ago that we were discussing the trendiness (or not) of tapas.  Well, in an adjunct to that discussion, may I refer everyone to today's article by Tom Seitsema, something he wrote as part of his duties as food critic for the Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/26/AR2008022600749.html).

Quote
...For 90 minutes, I'm held hostage as the servers drop off a tiny cone filled with lamb tartare and topped with shaved black truffle; grilled octopus set on a bed of lentils with a fan of avocado; a slender bar of foie gras accessorized with cranberry "tapenade," a button of brioche and designer sea salt; and a trio of house-made crackers. The food is mostly luscious, but the intricacies get lost in the blur. Across the table, my normally enthusiastic dining companion looks shellshocked. It's not waterboarding, but let's be frank: Torture comes in many guises.

"When is it over?" he wonders aloud. I remind him it could be worse: We could have ordered the $104 menu, which promises almost 20 tastes, rather than the $84 banquet, which serves up a mere dozen or so.

By 7:50 p.m., we're both full -- and our appetizers, among the few things we actually get to choose tonight, have yet to arrive. "I should have brought a sleeping bag," my friend says. Before the evening is over, about three hours after it began, in addition to all those pre-appetizers, we will face a main course, a pre-dessert of Greek yogurt, an actual dessert (apple-date tart with blue cheese gelato) and a post-dessert of tiny chickpea cookies and olive oil-laced caramels. With the check comes a grapefruit-flavored lollipop, which I stick in my coat pocket. Who knows? Someday I might get hungry again.

The above defines trendiness.

However, later in the article he notes that this is not something entirely new:

Quote
...As with so many culinary fashions, France is where the taste-of-this, taste-of-that notion got its start. The concept -- and people who have praised and panned the ritual -- stretches back to the dawn of nouvelle cuisine there in the 1970s, when chefs began offering customers a sampling of their vast repertoires via numerous petite versions of the appetizers and main courses. (Around the same time in this country, Chez Panisse in Berkeley, Calif., helped popularize the concept with a multi-course set menu that changed daily.) Even at the beginning of the trend, critics found flaws with the format.

"I have never had a menu degustation when I have not wished a few dishes had been dropped in favor of others," Mimi Sheraton wrote in a 1981 story in the New York Times. The food critic also groused about portions "so small, it is hard to get a really solid impression of the dish."

1981???  Over a quarter-century ago???

Therefor, I propose a couple of definitions:

TREND: Something that is growing in popularity, such as tasting menus, tapas, or the rediscovery of certain sauces (i.e.: pesto or aioli).

TRENDY: What happens when a trend is latched onto by a whole group of people because they see that it is growing in popularity, and they want part of that popularity, too.

The catch is, some of the people who latch onto the trend may be doing it because they are interested in the trend itself, and not the popularity.  So, are they being trendy (which means following the popularity), or following the trend?  Is it a case of good timing, or unfortunate timing?  There's a fine line of distinction, I believe.

I've been taking extra vitamin A, along with extra vitamin C, for the thing that's been hanging around me--and it has helped.

The internet is so helpful in the genealogical research my sister and I are doing.

An interesting story:

In 1756, seven young Quakers were taken from their meeting house in Cedar Creek, VA.  The leader of the militia was going to conscript them into the military.  All seven (one of the seven was my great (5) Grandfather William Stanley, two of his brothers were also in the group) were taken by force.
They protested saying they would never fight, but were taken to Fort Louden near Winchester, VA.  When they refused to fight or even to answer to roll call, the colonel in charge said if they would not fight they would be put to work building the fort.  They refused to do that as well.

The colonel ordered them whipped.  The seven removed their shirts and stood awaiting their punishment.  The sergeant ordered to carry out the punishment was unable to do so.

The Colonel relented and finally sent them to live with Quaker families in the nearby town of Winchester but would not send them home even though their relatives had petitioned Governor Dinwiddie to do so.  At the end of the war they were "discharged" and sent home.

The Colonel was George Washington.

If anyone is doing Genealogy research, sometimes dates don't match in the 17th and 18th centuries because they are written as OS or NS.

O.S. is the date in the Julian Calendar.  N.S. is the date in the Gregorian calendar.  They usually vary by about 11 days.

I began my afternoon viewing with the remainder of BLADE RUNNER which had about 25 minutes left from last night. The new "final cut" is probably the best the movie will ever be,and it's entertaining enough, but I've always found it to be a flawed film and NOT the masterpiece so many want it to be.

The Blu-ray disc handles all the fog and rain easily making it by far the best looking video incarnation of the film I've ever seen.

Next, I watched CHARLIE CHAN IN CITY IN DARKNESS. I had never seen this movie before, set right on the eve of World War II. The murder mystery seems very secondary to all the espionage going on elsewhere. I had never seen the movie before, and I didn't get the murderer right (I was way off). There's a very tiresome French secretary playing second fiddle to Charlie. Charlie gets roughed up more in this movie than I ever remember him receiving in other films.

I watched two of the bonus features on the disc after finishing the movie. The first was on the making of the movie and what was going on in the world with Hitler as the movie was being written and filmed. Very prescient of the writers to plot it as they did not knowing what was coming.

Next, I watched SOUTH PARK IMAGINATIONLAND. Seems to me it was three SOUTH PARK episodes strung together into a "movie." It's the "uncensored director's cut" which means the bleeps have been taken out and we can hear all the profanity. It's also in 16:9 aspect ratio rather than 4:3.

It was funny, and it has some neat satire about the good and bad aspect's of people's imaginations warring with each other. Funny to see figments of the imagination like Captain Hook, Glinda, Luke Skywalker, and Mickey Mouse occupying the same space.

What is "monkfish"?  A trend or trendy?

Digging into my copy of the Food Lover's Companion, by Sharon Tyler Herbst (which was published in 1990 and has over 3000 entries, compared to the 4th edition which was published just last year and has over 6000 entries, which is why I've got the new edition on my Jessica's Biscuit wishlist)...

Monkfish is a subset of angler fish.  Anglers bury themselves in the sea floor sediment and twich long filaments that grow from their heads.  Since the filament resembles a worm, other fish and shellfish are attracted to the filament and quickly find themselves "engulfed" by the angler's huge maw.

Anglers are very ugly, but are low in fat (who wouldn't be, just slobbing around on the sea floor like that) and firm-textured.  Their flavor is mild and sweet, comparable to that of lobster.  Unfortunately, the only part of anglers that is considered edible is the tail, but that can be prepared by almost any method suitable for fish.

So, are anglers (and therefor monkfish) trendy?  No.  They don't go out much, and when they do show up at a bar or club the beautiful people quickly shy away.  Their only companions tend to be accountants - otherwise, they just sit around like so much fish.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Monkfish, as an ingredient, shows up as part of various traditional bistro dishes, such as bouillabaisse or bourride, neither of which the trendy people can pronounce.  I would put bistro cooking as trend, not trendy - it is a range of cooking that has been around a long time and is being rediscovered by serious cooks.  If you find someone offering monkfish as something new and trendy, like they've just discovered it, take them aside and give them a good bitchslapping.  They'll have deserved it.

I, too, am about to shed a tear over DC JJ's departure. I do hope he finds a wonderful home.

As do we; just hope is previous owners don't come looking for him - the cat people insisted I take down all the "Found" posters, bcasue JJ will no longer be retrievable  - once he enters their system they loose track of individual cats.

Well, now we have our very own emergency cat rescue kit: a supply of canned food, litter box, litter-supply, litter scoop, litter mat, cat-toys, cat safety collar.

Congrats, PennyO!! :D

Funny.  I hate Amanda more than anyone in the house.  Her incessant need for attention is pathetic.  She is as bad, IMO, as Sheila who has to stage an irrational drama every week, trash-talking anyone who comes to mind -- and for no reason other than that she, herself, is trash, but fancies herself "street smart/tough."

re:bb

Are you going based on what you see on tv or on the feeds?

Amanda is needy. But to me she is a good person.  Most of the others are vile.

He is actually one of the ones i dislike the most.

To me the only really good ones are michael johns (the australian) and David A (the kid).

Although last night i did not think Michael johns was that good.

i did like david A's "imagine". And i agree with DR Derbrucer, i liked luke's Queen.

But i really dislike David Hernandez (who the judges thought was great last night).

A. We will not know, directly, that he has found a home. Inferentially, if they don't return him, he has been adopted (or tested positive for Leukemia and/or AIDS in which case he will be put down).

B. They make no attempt to find owners - they just place cats.

Correction - Hopper was a single act.  Fewer walk-outs that way.

(As it was, there were just three in the cast - two women and a man.  One woman was nude much of the time, the other fully clothed, and the man stripped down to his boxers and "wife-beater" for a long solo.  And if he'd worn even less than that, the show would still have been a horrid bore.)

Is PetSmart supposed to put a warning label on the cat adoption pen?

And if they did, what are the chances of that cat getting adopted?

"No-Kill" is a dream, but it is not necessarily attainable.  There are animals that pose serious health risks, to themselves, to other animals, and to the humans that care for them.  At some point, practicality has to enter into the formula.  Sorry, that's just how I see it.

When "Shadow" (a feral cat) had kittens in our back yard in 1998, we would have been stuck with four kittens if we hadn't been able to foster them and let them go. We were fortunate we found a place that let us do that.

Most cat shelters have separate rooms to house a cat that tested positive.  There are also false positives, so often the test is re-done.  A perfectly healthy cat that tests positive can live a long time without ever displaying symptoms of the disease.

PetSmart should have explained this to you and what other options you have before agreeing to their outdated mode of dealing with cats that test positive.  At the least they could have given you the option to take him back if he tests positive.

That's exactly what happens to a lot of foster caregivers.  That's why der B and I are no longer associated with the rescue group we started with - they simply could not see anyone other than themselves as being as good, could not bring themselves to trust other people.  We ran into one of them during the weekend, at the rabies shot clinic.  She couldn't even bring herself to speak to either of us.  So it goes.  (Switching from Douglas Adams references to Kurt Vonnegut.)

JJ will stay at Petsmart until he is adopted, which will probably be before the weekend is over. An affectionate cat like JJ will go fast.

Will they ask me if I have ever been the victim of a crime? If I answer yes, will that doom me to a civil case?

I never had any intention of keeping Belle, but then I didn't like the attitude of the people who were interested in adopting a big black dog.  After a month, and tears from Craig, and couldn't give up my shadow.  I have found homes for other stray dogs, and a cat, that have crossed our paths.

Well, I don't agree with their attitude.  If you are a rescue group, you have to be able to let go and let other people care for animals.  I think part of the Boo situation was the timing. She came along about a month after I had to put Nilla to sleep.  She certainly filled a big gaping hole in our little inter-species family. LOL

And once I got home, I preheated the stove to 425, then prepared some broccoli, red bell peppers, and garlic cloves for roasting... A generous drizzle of olive oil, a sprinkle of kosher salt, a couple of grinds of black pepper, and a nice dash of red pepper flakes... Popped into the oven for about 30 minutes... A very tasty and healthy accompaniment to the turkey sausages I cooked last night.  *And I'll be able to pack a container of roast vegetables to take with me tomorrow - fennel, carrots, broccoli and red bell peppers.  -And tomorrow night, roasted brussel sprouts!  -Yes, I'm on a roasted vegetable kick right now.  :)

Here at Panera.  I have figured out how to deal with the horrendous traffic and it works very well - ignore it and relax.  I have been close to giving myself a heart attack for the last two days - but today, I just relaxed and the drive was the drive (about ten minutes shorter than yesterday) and it's all fine and dandy.

Well... I kept meaning to comment that your observations about and frustrations with traffic are "typical" of someone who doesn't normally have to deal with it on a daily basis.  And now that you've had to deal with it for three days in a row, well...  Consider yourself a commuter. ;)

When der Brucer and I first took in JJ, it was clear in our minds that we would first try to foster him, and not adopt.  We wanted to find the original owners, which is why we posted pictures of JJ in places where those owners could see them, with contact information.

Barring that, we wanted to find a home for him, preferably not ours.  Integrating JJ into our house, which has four very active and inquisitive dogs already living in it, would have been highly difficult, and JJ was clearly not interested in that option.

I need to make something clear here:  PetSmart IS NOT the adoption group - the company assists in placing the cats.

That euthanasia would be an option didn't even come into the picture until this morning, when the representative of the adoption group explained it to us.  He specifically asked us if we would want JJ back if he tested positive.  He made it clear that, if the test was positive, the only two options were that we take JJ back, or JJ would have to be put down - they do not have the resources to do otherwise.  Der Brucer and I considered this option, and realized that it was not a good one for JJ or ourselves.  WE were the ones who agreed to the euthanasia option, IF the cat tests positive (and that is, frankly, an if, not a done deal).

No, we do not have the name of the group.

We do know that they work with over thirty PetSmart stores in the Maryland area.  And it's the right time of year for a cat JJ's age (about eight months) to be adopted.  During the summer, they are so inundated with cats that they can only get the kittens adopted.

Over on FoodTV's Dinner Impossible, "chef" Robert Irvine has to assemble over 7000 hors d'oeuvres for a reception the governor of Pennsylvania is throwing.

Having just finished viewing last night's performances, I have to say I DID like -- REALLY LIKE -- David Hernandez.  I thought his was the second-best of the evening, after David Archuleta.

And Chikeze was my third favorite.

The rest can go home now.

...And I liked David Hernandez too.

As for Luke Menard... He's cute - and he looked even cuter, imho, with shorter hair in the background clips.  He does have a good voice, but I can really tell he's used to be an ensemble singer, and not a soloist.  His vocals are just too "clean" to my ears.  I also suspect that his "ensemble range" is different from his "soloist range" - and he doesn't know it yet.  -Or he refuses to acknowledge that he probably should not be singing at the top part of his range so much.

As for Jason Yeager... He's good, but he smiles way too much.  Almost to the point where I'm not sure he's being sincere.  I also just think he's a bit more "square" than how he's presenting himself.  -And is that lock of blond hair a birthmark or something he put in himself?  And from a "casting agent" standpoint, he also needs to lose a couple of pounds.  -And, yes, even casting agents watch "AI".  ;)

Then I listened to Trey Parker and Matt Stone do the commentary for the TV-movie. They promised it would only last 5 minutes as they hate doing commentaries. In stead, it lasted for 47 of the 65 minutes. Still, it was informative dealing with how they put the show together and the very tense deadlines they barely make for the episodes each week the show airs.

They sound like they fly by the seat of their pants every week. Wow!

Next I watched tonight's IDOL. Honestly, I was dreadfully disappointed in all of the women this week except Carly (who opened the show). She has a big voice, and she knows how to use it.

The others to a person were extremely underwhelming to me. And that rocker chick Amanda Overmayer that the judges are so taken with has given two HORRENDOUS performances in a row, and yet they temper their criticism because they're so DESPERATE to have variety on the show instead of those bland blondes they've put through.

For me, this is BY FAR the weakest batch of singers they have ever had in the semifinals for IDOL.

I am satisfied with the result of Pwoject Wunway this evening.

What I didn't like about this season was that Christian got a couple of passes when he really could have been gone.  And the look he won week before last was the SAME jacket he has always made, he just found a picture at the museum that matched his vision.  And he IS annoying.

spoiler

I was simply astonished that he was voted the fan favorite this year. I was certain Jack would win it (or possibly Chris). He (Christian) has talent and flair, but he annoyed the crap out of me. He felt SO entitled, as if he should have won the prize EVERY week. He could never admit weaknesses of his designs or strengths in others' work.

When IDOL went off, I flipped over to LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT. I thought I had seen all of the CI shows on USA before NBC started showing them, but this was obviously a week that I missed because nothing about the last half hour was familiar to me at all. Maybe I can catch it on a Saturday rerun later in the season.

I ended the evening with tonight's new LAW & ORDER. Very interesting episode with the courtroom side. Looks like a rift between Connie and Mike now which should play out terrifically in later episodes.

I have to admit that I couldn't wait to see the decision on PROJECT RUNWAY so I peeked at Bravo when L&O went off.

I saw enough to see what the decision was between the two who were tied.

I'll have more to say tomorrow after I've seen the whole show and looked at their collections.

I also watched AS THE WORLD TURNS. Luke and Noah were on and were also in the previews for tomorrow (a very disturbing little scene).

I'm thinking of going to TGIFridays to find out.
Eeewww, yuck, no.

I've yet to step into a TIGF that doesn't have the noise level pumped up too loud.  Even the one that opened here in Rehoboth Beach last year makes my fillings hurt.  That alone is reason enough to stay away.

Oh, this is Iowa. We're a lot calmer here  ;)

Go there between 1:30-4:30pm - it's an "unofficial" quite time there.

I have calmed down a lot tonight. No more CNN, no more MSNBC, no more FOX and no more any place talking about the election. I just can't deal with it anymore.  I'm already feeling better

Der Brucer, if they lose track of individual cats, how can they return him to you if he isnt' adopted?

I suspect like many tracking systems, it is uni-directional: they have a tag on the animanl which enables them to track its source. I also suspect that if the cat doesn't pass their "adoptability" entrance exam, they still have the return to sender paperwork in-hand.

Well, I don't agree with their attitude.  If you are a rescue group, you have to be able to let go and let other people care for animals.

The local cat society has very strict rules:

No placement in homes with out fenced yards.
No placement with apartment dwellers.
No placement with renters without a signed consent form from the landlord.

I wonder why one of the women in charge has 17 cats in her trailer?

I put Carly Smithson in the top three, together with Kristy Lee Cook and Asiah Epperson. I put Amanda in the bottom three, together with Syesha Macardo and Alaina Whitaker.

Still, overall a weak group.

At the moment there aren't all that many cats on the PetSmart site.  I used a zip code from your town.  How many miles away do you think he will be.  I guessed.

My guess he could be anywhere within a three state (MD,VA, DE) and Washington DC area - easily a 300 mile radius.

At first this is what I thought would be the situation with JJ.  I thought you were just going to take him to the PetSmart adopt a pet clinics and then back home with you, doing this until he found a home.

No, the local rescue group picks up cats and delivers them to an intermediary organization (2.5 hours away). There the animals are pre-screened for adoptablity and netured if necessary. That organization then funnels the cats to over 30 different Petsmarts in the tri-state area.

I would be bankrupt in days if I tried roundtripping to Petsmarts at $3.00/gallon for gas.

Back from a very long and somewhat odd callback evening.  Most of the show is now cast - the way in which the callbacks occurred was a little odd, but I'm new to this existing theater company, so I just tried to go along with the flow.  We have some very good people in the show, but three roles remain uncast at this point - General Mills, The Brain, and the Narrator/Professor Leder.  Our new Zubrick is very different than our last Zubrick, but he gave a very funny reading and I think he'll do just fine - physically this guy is the complete opposite of our last Zubrick.  Couldn't be happier with our Fred, and I waffled back and forth between two Joyces, but settled on the one who gave the best reading.  Yoni also gave a good reading and my memory is she had a good voice.  I'm not normally this fast when I cast - I'd have like to have heard a few people sing again, but I'm sure it will all work out fine.  There were two possibles for Donna - both gave good readings, but I opted for the gal who's very close to Donna's age (16), plus she had a great voice and great energy.  I wish I could find something for the other Donna candidate, as she's really terrific.  The Rod is great.
