Title: FLOYD'S BARBERSHOP
Post by: bk on March 01, 2008, 12:18:20 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Floyd-like, trim and neat, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently at Floyd's Barbershop getting the once-over.

I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure that the composer Samuel Barber was behind it all, somehow...

Good morning, all!  I've got a couple of hours with Toyland and environs, then lots of Patrick Cassidy work.

I'm very fond of the word of the day: I use it regulary in referring to Harold Sanford and Otto Langey, who were Victor Herbert's amanuenses for LADY OF THE SLIPPER and BABES IN TOYLAND. Mr Sanford took over the position when Mr Langey went to work for another music publisher.  Both gentlemen were excellent orchestrators and arrangers and for years their work has been credited to Herbert alone.

TOD:
  THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLE
  SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS
  THE RAINMAKER (I wish I liked both Lancaster and Hepburn better in this; it's the rest of the cast that outshines them)

I was afraid that they had merely used the same old nonanamorphic transfer for THE TRAIN, a cardinal sin since the movie is excellent and deserves better treatment.

And add THE TRAIN in my above Burt Lancaster list. ELMER GANTRY should probably be there, too, along with BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ.

Today while I cook and eat lunch, I'll probably revisit the second season of THE CLOSER on the new upconverting HD-DVD player. I'd revisit season one, but they foolishly didn't enhance those transfers for widescreen TVs.

As for barbershops... Well... As the amount of hair product that people would put in their hair started to dwindle a few years ago - going for a more natural look - I'm guessing that helped the surge and hipness of barber shops.  I found a few of them while I was out there during What If.  And, yes, they were very popular - some even took appointments.  In any case... that's my theory for now.

And the word of the day is: AMANUENSIS!

Omigod!
I read a book this week (Robert Goddard's SIGHT UNSEEN) which featured an amanuensis!  See, the hero was trying to figure out who the amanuensis was for "the Junius Letters," while trying to solve a murder mystery which was connected to said letters.

From Publishers Weekly:
Quote
This compelling stand-alone thriller from British author Goddard (Play to the End) opens in 1981 with the kidnapping of two-year-old Tamsin Hall and the hit-and-run death of Tamsin's seven-year-old sister, Miranda, in the ancient town of Avebury, at the foot of two massive, mysterious monoliths, part of a Neolithic stone circle. Fast forward to the present, where historian David Umber, who witnessed the double crime and later married the children's nanny, hears from now retired Chief Inspector Sharp of the Wiltshire constabulary, who has received an anonymous letter with clues to what happened that center on the identity of an 18th-century political gadfly known by the pseudonym Junius, the subject of Umber's Ph.D. research. Umber's realization that his wife's suicide years before may actually have been murder spurs him to join Sharp in pursuing this new evidence. The solution to both the identity of Junius and the perpetrator of the crimes against the children is satisfying, intelligent and refreshingly straightforward.

Der Brucer and I always go to a barber shop.  Mens hair salons are just too foo-foo, and the people who work at them are not our kind of people.

The local yellow pages lists seven barber shops here in Rehoboth Beach.  We live in a hippest of the hip little town here in lower slower Delaware.  I'm glad to know that the berg of Los Angeles is finally catching up!

The reviews for the Met's PETER GRIMES continue to knock Mr Doyle:

"On the evidence of these three Gotham productions, as well as last season's "Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny" at L.A. Opera, it's clear Doyle isn't big on blocking, stage business (once he rids his actors of playing, say, the tuba), gesture or the establishment of time and place. In other words, he's really not much of a storyteller."

I would guess as the amount of hair baby boomers need to cut dwindled, they may have decided a barber would be a good place to go.  A nice shave and a  haircut.

This way I can take down the curtain that doesn't fit the door right and put the film on the window panes so I ca get some light and my neighbors still can't see in.   I better get busy working on it.

Good Afternoon!

Well... I headed on down to the rehearsal to say, "Hi!"... And upon setting foot into the studio it was like I had set foot into some sort of sauna - although a sauna filled with about twenty male dancers in their dance attire.  And, yes, there was sweat and perspiration galore.  And I was even greeted with some partial hugs and kisses from some of those male dancers - "I'd hug you, but I don't want to get you wet."  ;)  I made the rounds, then headed back out into the cooler air.

Short and sweet.  And sweaty.  :P

Our DS Rob's girlfriend is one of the dancers in

THIS REHEARSAL VIDEO (http://www.cetconnect.org/genericPlayer.asp?ID=2196)

She's the one in the lavender outfit with cropped pants.

Unfortunately there wasn't much movement in my video.  I'll try again later.  DS Rob's girlfriend is lovely.

BK mentioned the other day that he's been after me to move back to LA--"I'll give you a knuckle sandwich if you don't get your butt cheeks back to LA where they belong!" in BK-speak. This has gone on for some time. I told him I had a few projects to finish up here on the East Coast. But BK is not known for his patience. In fact, I woke up one morning to some commotion outside. I looked out the window and lo and behold there was a FOR SALE sign on my house and people queueing up for an Open House! And me still in my jammies! Oh, dear!

My butt cheeks seem to be in great demand in LA. As for the rest of me--the non-butt-cheeks part (NBC)--well, that part is still deliberating. "Perhaps we'll just stay here in the East." Now, if my butt cheeks are in LA and the rest of me stays here, does that make me bicoastal? Bicorporal? Bi________??? And, once in LA, will my butt cheeks will need a place to live. Will they be able to get a reduction in rent? After all, it's only my butt cheeks. You see, I have much to ponder.

I have asked before, many times ;D and no one else seems to have the problem I do.  I can no longer highlight the words and click on an action.  I have to cut and paste said action around the words.  Sometimes I miss, and I don't always see what portion I missed when I did the cut and paste.....Does that make sense??

I'm trying to remember to click on the action first & then type in between it, instead of doing a cut and paste after the fact.  That was easier.

That could also explain why there wasn't rain for 2/3 of my walk, only as I approached the mailbox and as I left it.

That's for sure!  Selling a house is not fun.  I speak from too much experience.  So far we have sold 8 homes.  Two we did without a Realtor.  Of course those were sold in a sellers market.  A couple were purchased by the company Keith worked for due to a buyers market.  We found when they buyers know you are being relocated, they wait to see if the house doesn't sell so they can buy it for less later on.

DR Jeanne - Maybe you'll wake up one day, and find that you've just been in a snowglobe all this time.  ;)

 ;D ;D ROTFLOL.  ;D ;D

Jeanne's Big East Coast Adventure was really just life in an alternate universe? In this case, a snowglobe?  Humm...you could be right.  ;)

Not on your life!!! Besides, who said we need to be indentical twins? We can be fraternal twins, that will be just fine

We could even become rare song birds on display, should we decide to be fraternal Siamese Twins. . . ;)

Congratulations on your news, Jeanne.  If you get moved quickly enough, BK is looking for someone to play General Mills.

Thank you, TCB. A return to acting? Humm...I do like the idea of a woman playing that part. No, I think not. But I shall ponder my next chapter.

I'm a bit sore. I got Gila window film (cracked glass is the design). I cut out 15 panes for the door from my bedroom to the little Juliet balcony so I could take down the curtain that doesn't fit. (My neighbors front window looks directly at the door, so I can't leave it clear glass.   It was a lot of work but I love it!  Then I hung blinds on 2 of the wondows in my bedroom.  I have one more to go, but these were a little more complicated so it was a lot of working over my head and my arms are sore.  It's all looking a lot better than it did

You need to watch a better movie, BK.

For instance, I am watching DINOSAURUS (196o), it is great fun and features two of the hairiest and handsomest leading men I have ever seen (I do believe I now have two new favorite actors!)

(http://www.moviegoods.com/assets/product_images/1020/199137.1020.A.jpg)

And those are the two handsome leading men?

Just asking (to quote Jose).

It's the hair style.  Before it was sort and behind my ears, now it's more forward and on my face.  I wish I had lost weight.  I also didn't have make up on.....more than anything, I quit my old job and I'm happy in my own business. Do you think that could have something to do with it   ;D

Well I got some DVD's in the mail today, and like DR MBARNUM I am watching a movie.

I have read about this movie and heard about it, and now I have seen it.

ATLAS made in 1961 by Roger Corman in Greece, Europe, starring Michael Forest as the titular hero and Barboura Morris as a Greek tootsie.  And Frank Woolf as The Evil Praximates.

Dialog by Charles Griffith - writer of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS....with some priceless dialog that I will long remember:

Praximates:  Don't toy with me, wrestler.  I can have your entrails on the sand with a snap of my fingers.

Atlas:  Well then, start snapping!

+++++++++

Praximates:  Where IS everybody?

Gallus:  Did you just run in from Marathon?

Praximates:  Very funny.  Very funny.  Take your funny jokes elsewhere.

+++++++++

Gallus:  I don't think there's a Thenian prisoner who will do as you say.

Praximates:  Behold, the Oracle of Delphi speaks.  Where are the guards?

Guard:  Did you want me?

Praximates:  No, I wanted your Aunt Helen from Lesbos.

+++++++++

Thenian Rebel:  Praximates will never attack the entrance.  If he does it will be another Thermopolye.  And he isn't that stupid.

Atlas:  I'M not so sure.

+++++++

And the battle scenes keep reminding me of the Monty Python sketches that had a couple of ladies' groups re-enacting the Battle of Britain.

In other words.....HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

Next I watched JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL. Argh! What a bore! And in this age of PLANET EARTH on HD, even the photography was merely adequate (though Oscar nominated).

I guess in the age of FLower Power and Free Love, the message is fairly benign, but it really didn't grab me in any way. Did this movie make any money at all? It cost $1.6 million to produce (not much money for 1973). I don't remember it being anything resembling a hit back then.

I guess the Neil Diamond soundtrack made money (and won Grammys).

While I did my work today, the girls watched.  They sat there side by side staring at me. I cracked up more than once. Boo finally went to nap and Callie stayed right there purring so loud you could have heard her in the next room.  She also sat on the island in the kitchen and supervised while I cooked. She loves to sit and watch me cook. She never tries to get any food, just likes to be there.
