TOTD:
First Soundtrack Album "The Alamo" (for the Brothers Four and Marty Robbins tracks)
First 45 rpm Male Singer: Johnny Mathis "Chances Are/12th Of Never" (Two Hits for the price of one)
First 45 rpm disc by Female singer "Sailor" by Lolita. I still much prefer it to the Petula Clark version which did not get much air play here but does now.
First OBC Recording: "My Fair Lady" It had been a long wait for it to be issued here in OZ.
First LP - Possibly "Marty Robbins - Gunfighter Ballads & Trail Songs" or "The Buddy Holly Story"

TOD: *Sigh* here's where I show just how little taste I had as a youth...

First cast recording purchased: The Michael Damian revivial of "Joseph." Not quite sure why I picked it up, but it was the first show that I saw where I knew the score before seeing the show.
First female vocalist purchased: Cathy Dennis's "Move to This"
First male vocalist: Bryan Adams's "Waking up the Neighbors"
First movie soundtrack: I'm not sure... "Pretty Woman." "St. Elmo's Fire" and "Born on the Fourth of July" all came pretty close to each other.

Post by: elmore3003 on March 04, 2008, 05:39:05 AM
Good morning, all!  I've been up and about for about ninety minutes now and the laundry is in the washers in the basement and the washers down the street at the laundromat.  I had peculiar dreams last night in which I was workng in either the office equipment place I worked in during the 1970s or in a pharmacy.  The pharmacy is certainly possible, given all the crap I've been ingesting/spraying/breathing since Jan 15.

Today, after puttering about the apartment on bug control, I have to begin the new Patrick Cassidy chart.  I'd like to get it into Fed Ex tomorrow night for Thursday delivery.

I discovered musical theatre in the 9th grade, with a production of Kurt Weill's KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY. I believe DR Ginny's husband Richard played the timpani in the orchestra.  I loved movie musicals but I never made the connection between them and shows until 9th grade.

Because my family was essentially poor white trash, cast albums were out of my fanily's budget so my mother was always bringing me home from the market those Camden show recordings: Hill Bowen conducts THE MUSIC MAN, for instance, and I discovered the public library had cast albums, for which I abandoned the few Gilbert & Sullivan recordings I usually checked out.  I was foolishly eclectic at that time and never checked out at the time TENDERLOIN, FIORELLO, or SHE LOVES ME because the info on the recordings didn't appeal to me.  I didn't discover how glorious SHE LOVES ME is until I was a junior in college, and TENDERLOIN - now one of my faves - was a mystery till grad school.

My next two OBC recordings are BYE BYE BIRDIE, which came with my Christmas gift of 1960, I believe, a portable stereo phonograph.  Then came either KISS ME, KATE or CAMELOT.  My faves then were Lerner & Loewe and Rodgers & Hammerstein.  Around 1962, I discovered Bernstein's WEST SIDE STORY and CANDIDE, thanks to Stanley Green's discography in his "World of Musical Comedy."  No stopping me after that.

My first cast album memory is the OBC of MY FAIR LADY

TOD:

First cast album purchase: A Chorus Line.  Can't remember for sure, but I think I listened to the album before I saw the show, which everyone was talking about.  That was 1975.  Second purchase was Annie, in 1977.

First 45 purchase: Karen and Richard Carpenter, Top of the World.  That was 1973.
Title: Re:THE HEPCAT
Post by: FJL on March 04, 2008, 06:11:46 AM
First pop purchase that i bought on my own was the B.J. Thomas LP which included "Raindrops Keep Falling On My head."  At that young age, i remember being puzzled, though, that B.J. thomas himself was not actually in the Butch Cassidy... movie.  :)  First 45 purchased without my parents' help was "One Bad Apple," sung by the Osmond Brothers.

First soundtrack I remember buying on my own (as opposed to the many my parents had bought) was Thoroughly Modern Mille, which was only 99 cents at this great place on Avenue J in Brooklyn.

For cast albums, I mostly taped them off a nightly program that was on the radio where they played entire show albums, so it's possible that i didn't buy a cast album with my own money until the season of A Chorus Line, Chicago and Pacific Overtures.  I think Pacific Overtures may have been my first own-money purchase.

I did get Shenandoah and The Wiz when they first came out, but I'm fairly sure my parents actually bought those for me (and the family, of course.)
Title: Re:THE HEPCAT
Post by: FJL on March 04, 2008, 06:18:43 AM
And re female vocalist 45's, I think i bought Vicki Sue Robinson's "Turn the Beat Around" and Andrea True's "More More More" in the same fateful, life-defining :)  trip to the record store.

MANAGER AT MALE STRIP CLUB SAYS HE EMPLOYED 'AMERICAN IDOL' CONTESTANT DAVID HERNANDEZ

"American Idol" contestant David Hernandez once entertained audiences by removing his clothes instead of singing tunes, a manager at a male strip club in Phoenix told The Associated Press.

The 24-year-old finalist from Glendale, Ariz., once worked as a stripper at Dick's Cabaret, appearing fully nude and performing lap dances for the club's "mostly male" clientele, club manager Gordy Bryan said Monday.

Thanks for vibage.  The tv guy comes today to do his "diagnosis."  Oy.  I have the sorest throat and pain up in my left ear.  Doctor tomorrow if I'm not better.   :P

TOD:

First 45:  I got 2 the same day--"Scarborough Fair" b/w "Canto Triste" by Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 and "Hey Jude" b/w "Revolution" by The Beatles.  My mother forbade me to play "Revolution" when she was in the house.  :)
First Soundtrack:  My Uncle Charlie came out from NYC for one of my sister's birthdays and I rememeber they bought her the OST of "West Side Story," and I believe they got me a Disney Records thing of "101 Dalmations" which probably wasn't a sountrack, but I'll count that.
First LP:  I think it *might* have been Blood, Sweat & Tears, if not one of the first 3 B66 LPs.
First OCR:  The one I remember getting (through the Capitol Record club, LOL) was "Applause."  But I probably had others before that.

Speaking of Sergio (and when am I not?), one little ray of sunshine yesterday--his new CD arrived from Japan (and boy were its arms tired).  It's a different release than what will be coming out in the US in a couple of months.  It has some killer stuff on it--my favorite so far is Natalie Cole's luscious "Somewhere in the Hills," the Jobim tune also known as "Favela" and "O Morro."

Today I'll be getting to the first of three Criterion releases for the month - MAFIOSO. I know nothing whatsoever about the movie, so it'll be fun exploring something totally new and different.

First cast recording was MY FAIR LADY bought after I saw the original show in New York. Of course, I was only 8, so my uncle bought the OCR for me.

The first cast recording I bought with my own money was CAMELOT purchased after seeing the national tour with Biff McGuire and Jeannie Carson.

First soundtrack is easy - Judy Garland's A STAR IS BORN in the pink box. I had seen THE WIZARD OF OZ on television (saw it at the movies, too, on a double bill with another film; I want to say it was Martin & Lewis in PARDNERS, but it would seem odd to pair an MGM movie reissue with a Paramount first-run.), and I got my mom to take me to a record store to see what Judy Garland records they had. A STAR IS BORN was all they had, and little did I know what a collector's item that original box release would eventually be.

I forgot to mention last night that I did scan through yesterday's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Luke and Noah were on, and now I think I've figured out where they're heading with Irina.

Her visa is about to run out, and she's next going to try to get a student visa to stay in the country. I'm guessing that's going to fall through, and the only way to keep her in the country is for either Luke or Noah to marry her. Since Noah "feels" like her brother, gallant Luke is the likely candidate. It'll start off platonically, and then she'll decide she wants a real husband and thus begins the seduction.

If indeed the show goes in this direction, it has lost me as a viewer.

Well, after the NYCGMC librarian and I scrambled around last night and this morning to get an orchestration of "New York New York" to Texas for this Kander & Ebb "benefit," the MD - who's been curiously quiet - kiboshed it today because the key was wrong for the six starring altos!

First OCR Cast Album I bought:  "Hello, Dolly!"  It was the early 1960s and I'd only just begun collecting soundtracks when this Broadway musical lit up the skies and became a smash.  I just HAD to have it!

First Female 45 or LP I bought:  Oddly enough, I believe the first female LP I bought was "Lainie Kazan".  I know "My Name is Barbra" was in the fray, but I think the Kazan album came first.

First 45 was something by Petula Clark.

First Male 45 or LP I bought:  I was coming off a "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" (movie and OST) "high" and found "Harve Presnell sings the World's Greatest Love Songs."  He did, indeed.

First 45...Maybe "Venus in Blue Jeans" by Bobby Vee.

And just for fun:  The first "Group" LP I ever bought was "Jan and Dean's Greatest Hits".

A youth ‘on track’ until fatal gunfire

Football player's dreams die in a flurry of bullets in South L.A.

By Paloma Esquivel, Paul Pringle and Francisco Vara-Orta, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
March 4, 2008

Stanford University called about Jamiel Shaw a week or so ago, intrigued by the slight but speedy running back for Los Angeles High School, the Southern League's most valuable player last year. Rutgers University called a few days later.

The Shaw family already had reason to be proud. Jamiel's mother, Army Sgt. Anita Shaw, was on her second tour of duty in Iraq.

On Sunday night, it was Jamiel's father on the phone and then his son's girlfriend, Chrystale Miles. Jamiel Sr. called to tell him to hurry home from the mall. The 17-year-old boy was three doors away when someone shot him to death while he was still talking on his cellphone to Chrystale, friends say.

Jamiel Sr. heard the shots almost as soon as he hung up. He ran out of the house, raced around the corner and found his son lying on the sidewalk, bleeding.

"She's over there trying to protect us from guns and bombs, and then she has to hear that her son is dead over here," he said of Anita on Monday. "I've got my own personal Iraq now."

Los Angeles police officials described the killing as random and senseless, cutting down a youth who had been doing everything right in his life -- from hitting the books to never missing church to inspiring the Los Angeles High Romans to last year's Southern League title.

A police spokeswoman said two Latino men pulled up in a car, jumped out, asked Jamiel if he belonged to a gang, and shot him when he didn't answer. She said Jamiel was not affiliated with a gang and that detectives had no suspects.

Anita Shaw was flying back from Iraq on Monday, family members said.

College bound teen from stable family murdered on a Sunday evening virtually on his own doorstep for the offense of not being a gang member.

This is the American Tragedy. This is the terrorisn already infecting our daily lives.

What do our candidates have to say to the grieving family - shit happens?

I wouldn't conclude that he was shot for "not" being a gang member.  He did not reply, and they shot him anyway...possibly because they figured he was in a gang and was afraid to answer.

Either way, though...your point is made loud and clear!

But a further question that should be asked:  What do our "in office" politicians have to say to the grieving family. They're the ones responsible for changing things.  The "candidates" cannot be responsible for promising to fix ALL society's ills when the governing bodies that actually do the lawmaking ignore the problems.

I had a gay friend who married a Swedish woman so she could come to America and work. They never lived together; in fact, he never heard from her after about five years.

I know this happens. It's the melodramatic seduction that I object to (if it happens). She's been eyeing them both like ice cream cones in the last couple of episodes where they've all appeared, and I know she has "designs" on them. Whether it's to become an American or whether it IS a grand plan designed by Colonel Meyer to get his son hitched, I'm not quite sure. But there's something "off" about her, and I despise how STUPID all of the other characters are who can't see her machinations. She's too needy for them all to buy this act hook, line, and sinker.

And what happened to the plan to go to the prison and ASK Colonel Meyer about her. They're taking the word of a complete stranger on face value. Another stupid plot machination.

The orchestration job I mailed out yesterday is fine.  I'll be paid for it.

The "New York NY" problem is because of difficulties with other rental agents and the request for a fast NYNY fix for the benefit.  These damned galas are aklways the same: months of planning and yadayada and then a mad rush which stresses out everyone a week before performances because of changes - in this case a too-removed musical director - and dropouts.  Nothing was asked yesterday about the keys for the NYNY orchestration, and the MD should have been involved in the discussion, not just the producer. I was asked simply "do you have one we can rent?"  The answer was yes.  I sent them a recording of the Chorus doing the piece and the MD decided the key was too high for his six Dallas Divas.

This is but one of many plot stupidities on this soap, but they're common to all of them.  What about the plot to get the black lady to confess and that idiot Vienna's jumping into bed with another man? If she and her lover were so close, why didn't he tell her he was helping his family? I don't recall seeing a good soap since ALL MY CHILDREN in the early 1970s.

Like many 'my age', the Mary Martin Peter Pan was the first musical I saw(on TV)and the next day my father took me to the city library to check out the record. And that was the pattern for years.Money was tight and my father thought the 79cent LPs they sold at the supermarket were fine(and some were quite nice)The first LP I OWNED was the SOUND OF MUSIC OBC. I can still remember how thrilled I was, esp after overhearing my father tell my uncle Pat, "You won't believe it Pat but it cost 5.27$ for just the one record", 2nd LP that was my own personal property was a birthday gift from my godmother, MARY MARTIN SINGS>RICHARD RODGERS PLAYS, which I still listen to on CD;I was a Mary Martin junkie, and now, BK,thanks to TOD, I'll be jonesing on showtunes for the rest of the week.

I'm sure it's all in the Kritzer books, but the first 45 male vocalist I remember buying was Elvis Presley's Heartbreak Hotel, but I also used to get tons of free 45s from my father's various jukeboxes, so it may have been something else.  Female was probably either Theresa Brewer's Bell Bottom Blues or Giselle McKenzie's Hard To Get.

I have a recommendation for anyone looking for a good pillow.

They are not cheap (like $40).  But i have never felt any pillow like this before.

I don't think they sell them at the stores. But have any of you head of Tony Little Homedic pillows? I'd seen them on The shopping Channel here in Canada (he also sells them on hsn.com in the US). And i'd always been curious.

They looked so comfortable. Apparently 9/10 people think this is the greatest thing ever.

I just looked it up on the home shopping network and this is what i got:

http://health-fitness.hsn.com/tony-little-micropedic-2-sleep-pillows-and-2-pillowcases-by-homedics_p-2272268_xp.aspx?web_id=2272268&ocm=sekw (http://health-fitness.hsn.com/tony-little-micropedic-2-sleep-pillows-and-2-pillowcases-by-homedics_p-2272268_xp.aspx?web_id=2272268&ocm=sekw)

So when they had a sale i bought one.

I tried it during the day and i wasn't sure if i would like it.

But OMG at night. I slept like a baby. Your head doesn't move and it cradles your neck. So comfortable.

I just thought i'd mention it in case anyone else had trouble sleeping or wanted to try something very different.

I sent them a recording of the Chorus doing the piece and the MD decided the key was too high for his six Dallas Divas.

And no one...not the MD or any of the musicians...could transpose the key to one that was suited for the divas?

Not in the orchestration I had.  Often transpositions need to be rescored because they new key often puts instruments out of their ranges.

Wal-Mart stirs CD pricing pot with multi-tiered plan
By Ed Christman Sat Mar 1, 9:14 PM ET

NEW YORK (Billboard) - The major music companies have been resistant to lowering their price on CDs, but now they may be dragged to that point: Wal-Mart, the largest retailer of music with an estimated 22 percent market share, has proposed a five-tiered pricing scheme that would allow the discounter to sell albums at even lower prices and require the labels to bear more of the costs.

According to sources, the Wal-Mart proposal would allow for a promotional program that could comprise the top 15 to 20 hottest titles, each at $10. The rest of the pricing structure, according to several music executives who spoke with Billboard, would have hits and current titles retailing for $12, top catalog at $9, midline catalog at $7 and budget product at $5. The move would also shift the store's pricing from its $9.88 and $13.88 model to rounder sales prices

I didn't really purchase a lot of cast albums when I was a kid.  I know I'd check out records from the library and tape them, and I'd get albums as gifts.  The most exciting was when a pre-release pressing of A Chorus Line arrived.  It's possible I purchased Annie, although it's somewhat more likely I purchased They're Playing Our Song, which I'd admired on its pre-Broadway try-out.  It also might have been Sweeney Todd, a 2-record set.  But, really, the bulk of my collection has always consisted of records I didn't purchase myself.

As someone who writes songs for musicals the mere idea of a Jukebox musical consisting of songs not written for musicals is an abomination to me.  How would our dear elmore feel if musicals suddenly didn't hire orchestrators?  The only Jukebox I didn't loathe with a passion that ate away at my very vitals was A Class Act.  Those were songs I'd never heard before.  Their author, Ed Kleban, had written all the songs for musicals, including one about the BMI workshop.  He died, and it's not too much of a stretch to believe that A Class Act is an evolution of that BMI show (one could say the same of Tick Tick Boom).

If Broadway songwriters had a union, they'd probably strike over this.

Then I watched MAFIOSO, a comedy-drama directed by Alberto Lattuada. I enjoyed the film, but its drastic switch from a feel good comedy of manners into something more serious was really jarring. I'm sure that's exactly what the director wanted the film to be, but what a bitter taste in the mouth one would have left the cinema with after watching the film.

Chef Cooks Up Hoax (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/04/arts/04arts-CHEFCOOKSUPH_BRF.html?_r=1&ref=dining&oref=slogin)

Quote
The celebrity chef, author and aspiring St. Petersburg, Fla., restaurateur Robert Irvine will be replaced by the Food Network as host of “Dinner Impossible” after admitting to inaccuracies in a résumé that included a British knighthood, ownership of a castle in Scotland, friendship with Prince Charles and cooking for four United States presidents, the BBC reported. The British-born Mr. Irvine, 42, who also said he had helped to make the wedding cake for Prince Charles and Lady Diana, told The St. Petersburg Times that he had fabricated parts of his history because he felt pressure “to keep up with the Joneses” and that he was “truly sorry.” Mr. Irvine, the author of an autobiography, “Mission: Cook!,” and the owner of a company that sells his own brand cookware, did work at the White House, but in the Navy Mess, not as a personal chef to a president. A spokesman for the Food Network said, “We appreciate Robert’s remorse about his actions,” but added that “for now we will be looking for a replacement host.”

And there was also this wonderful - well, I thought it was wonderful - essay from this past Sunday New York Times' Magazine...

Speak, 'Tootsie' (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/02/magazine/02wwln-medium-t.html?scp=1&sq=tootsie&st=nyt)

Quote
“Tootsie” came out in 1982, when most Americans assumed that if you didn’t catch a movie while it was playing in theaters, you might never see it. Moviegoers were largely ignoring the climactic developments in home-entertainment technology — including the so-called format war between Betamax and VHS — that would, in the coming decades, transform not just movie watching but also home design and romantic relationships. The best format for audiovisual data storage was still considered to be the human memory.
...

Yes, the article concentrates on the movie, "Tootsie", but it also harkens back to the good not-so-ole days of watching movies in a theater.

First Movie Soundtrack:  BEN-HUR

(Let me think about the rest.)

In February of 1964, after about nine years off and on in Junior Theatre, I got cast in my first mainstage show at the Tacoma Little Theatre.  I was cast as Nick in the production of A THOUSAND CLOWNS.  Being cast in one of the main stage productions immediately changed my status from just one of the kids, to one of the regular crowd involved with the theater.  The first production after A THOUSAND CLOWNS was ANYTHING GOES, and since I was now with the in crowd, I used to take the bus down to the theater on Friday nights, because I could hang around backstage and watch the show from the wings. Naturally, the cast recording became a very important part of my youth, because it reminded me every time I played it, that I was no longer an audience member or a Junior Theatre kid,; but I was now an actor.

We have all heard stories about how various show biz folk, including Clark Gable, supported themselves before they became famous.  Should we really care whether this young man took his clothes off in a gay bar, a straight bar, or on a street corner?

NEW AMSTERDAM, a new procedural series with an immortal detective as the lead. Let's see how it compares to MOONLIGHT.

If the good looks of the leading actors is any indication, I would say we have a tie!

There was a big article in our local newspaper today about how fans are clamoring (or clamouring for Tomovoz) for more and more of the Luke and Noah gay love story.

Good evening from Dixie land in Southwestern Utah....

Sneaking in on the computer at the library.  Lovely day here... temps in the 60s and I did some more exploring of the area. Love old buildings and history and I had to do some looking. There is a neat little shop that was put in an old store... They served some wonderful ice cream and soda in glass bottles. They had Pepsi, Coke, Crush, Kickapoo, apple pop, Fanta, Moxie and many others.

http://www.greengatevillageinn.com/juddstore.html (http://www.greengatevillageinn.com/juddstore.html)

Here are some other buildings http://www.greengatevillageinn.com/villagecitylink.html (http://www.greengatevillageinn.com/villagecitylink.html)

Across the street from here is the older tabernacle and several brick buildings that have been restored and used for other things. I found it interesting that they retain a lot of hte characteristics of buildings you might see in the northeast. In one othe buildings they even had the old-style wood flip windows with removable sash.  The park near the tabernacle is quite nice and it is nice to sit a spell and enjoy the scenery. I will say that the scenery is stunning to say the least.

Yesterday I did a bit of shopping...

Is there a legal issue if they "fire" the guy for dancing at a gay cabaret?  For example, would they remove someone from the TV show for dancing at Chippendales or appearing nude in a legit show?

Probably not.  Although a few years back, they did remove someone from the final 24 for some heinous reason or other.

Frenchy somebody.

The sponsors must be considered, of course.  Paula can have a fling with a guy in the final 24, but Simon probably wouldn't survive one of David's lap dances.

Was it S. Woody or der Brucer who thought I should use my noggin' and take the 134 to the I5 instead of going through Hollywood and downtown on the 101.  Well, now we can tell whoever it was why:  I tried that route today and it added a bloody fifteen minutes to the drive.  While it's much faster to get to the Stadium Way off ramp just before downtown, going through downtown is much more horrid than going through Hollywood and downtown to junction to the 5 there.  It's so long to reach the same place where you come out going through downtown that you lose whatever time you initially gained, and then it adds another fifteen minutes just dealing with literally stand-still traffic for about eight miles on a section of the 5 you never even see when you go through downtown.

I usually sleep on my back or side. I've tried the pillow with both of these positions and it was good.

However i've seen them do demos for people that sleep on their stomach. It is supposed to be really good for that too.

AMERICAN IDOL SPOILER TALK I GUESS

As for tonight's "American Idol", well, no true stinkers, a couple of goods, and maybe one or two pretty goods.  However, there is still one contestant that doesn't appeal to me at all whom the judges keep praising to the high heavens.  -I'm guessing he sounds better in the studio than on TV.

I'm curious who you mean. Is it 17 year old David A?

I really cannot get into any of the guys. Although I sort of agree with simon (that the kid will go far in this comp).

I totally agree with simon on the aussie. I loved him in auditions. And i think he could be great. But he has yet to wow me during the live shows.

I thought the stripper guy was okay. And i think the publicity will help him for now stay in the comp longer.

The most interesting performance for me was david cook.

The key to people getting booted off IDOL for "moral" reasons or not is directly affected by how open and honest they were in their declarations to the producers about their pasts. Frenchy Davis and one of the black twins from several years ago (the one George Huff replaced right before the finals started) who had been arrested for robbery didn't divulge their pasts when asked. Others who have posed nude or had other scandals were open about it to the producers when they were advanced into the 24, and they have been allowed to compete.

Well, funny you should ask... I realized that I hadn't checked where I will be staying this year.  Normally, they put me up in the main convention hotel so that I have easy access to the audition room.  Well, I just checked my itinerary, and it turns out I will be staying at the Chattanooga Choo Choo Holiday Inn (http://www.choochoo.com/).  -I wonder if I'll get one of the converted train car rooms? ;)

-Alas, it's a 15 minute walk to the Convention Center - or a short shuttle ride, so... :-\

I began my evening with the remainder of the bonus features on the MAFIOSO DVD. A couple of interviews lasting 7-8 minutes each, some sketches of the main characters, and two trailers. That was about it.

On tonight's IDOL, I thought David Cook had the best performance, followed by David Hernandez. I thought David Archuleta was a bit off tonight but OK.

Worst by far were Luke Minard (at least half of the song was sharp), Chakezie (ridiculous out of control falsetto), and the fey kid who did "Jailhouse Rock" the first week. I can never remember his name.

The judges raved about the kid with dreadlocks, and I thought he was awful, too.

The ones who did well this week showed the first burst of real singing ability that I've seen from them all season. Maybe they've found their groove finally.

NEW AMSTERDAM was an OK detective drama. The "finding his soulmate" part of the story bored me to tears, and the mystery was only fair. I quickly figured out the guilty party once we had all the suspects rounded up. I did like the detective being able to relate to various people from all the different lives he's lived down through the centuries. That was the most entertaining thing about the show.

As for DR TCB's evaluation of the hotness of this star versus the detective on MOONLIGHT, I'll take Mick St. John (vampire) in a heartbeat.

JERICHO was painful for several reasons. First, the local CBS affiliate was running an ACC basketball game from 8-10 which ran past the hour. Thus, they were recording JERICHO which started 6 minutes past the hour, and since they were recording it, they only recorded the SD version, so I didn't get to see the show in HD. Damn them!

More painful, however, were several key events that happened during the show. WHAT A SURPRISE!

I'm betting that some DRs wished that the "falling ceiling" fell closer to the stage.  ;)

Danny Noreiga is the name of the singer I can't stand on the show. Actually, the vocals might be tolerable if he had ANY idea how to move on stage without flopping around. Ghastly.

Michael Johns (the Aussie) is another singer the judges are so enthusiastic about that I don't feel has EVER lived up to their heaping amounts of praise.

And was Paula out of it tonight or what? Jumbled words, sentences, thoughts all piled on top of each other. So sad.

After H and R Block, and since I was on that side of town I stopped by and visited one of the Iraqi families, the Kawari's.

Had a great time and the two older kids, Noor and Ali are loving high school. The daughter, Noor, is particularly good with math, English, basketball, and is even teaching some of her teachers Arabic! And she is quite the artist. She is really a great kid and she has quite a crush on Colin Farrell.

Son Ali, on the other hand, isn't as good of a student as his sister, but he loves his new school never-the-less and is doing well in Basketball! LOL! He actually did not attend school much in Iraq as it was just too dangerous for him.

Noor was never bothered as long as she kept her head scarf on (the insurgents would always threaten to blow up the school if the girls didn't wear the scarves).

And Mustafa the dad is a big fan of old Hollywood movies (he however can't stand Bollywood movies  :-[  )...he loves Bette Davis, and WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE is one of his favorite movies....as well as GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES and other movie musicals....he had never heard of ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE, however.

Be extremely glad you didn't break any bones.  Several years ago, I tripped on a somewhat sunken manhole section of a sidewalk near my office building.  As I fell, I reached out with my right arm to break my fall.  It worked.  And my right arm was broken,  too....just near the elbow.  Less than 24 hours later I was home after surgery in which a titanium plate and seven screws were used to join the broken bones together.

His "my most embarrassing moment" story -- what a joke!  Those dreadlocks look nasty, and to hear that one actually came off his head in his hands while "tying back his hair" at a restaurant!  What kind of a goon doesn't LEARN something from that?

Callbacks were okay.  I made a decision on Yoni (down to two people - I chose the one who beveled well).  She's really cute (is currently playing Squeaky Fromme in their Assassins), good voice, and sexy.  She also plays opposite her Zubrick in Assassins - the fellow who plays John Hinckley, so they have good chemistry.  We're down to needing one ensemble male, and one General Mills - there are simply no candidates among those who've auditioned, so I'll be working doubly hard to find someone over the next couple of days.  I had to go with someone as the Narrator/Professor Leder - very different from BJ, but the guy is a Chance company member and I think they really wanted me to use him.  He's not ideal in terms of what I'm used to, but he's very talented, sings well, and I'll just have to work with him and I think it will be fine.

~~~~~VIBES FOR ROSEMARY'S BABY~~~~~
;D
Tonight's rehearsal actually went quite well.  I still haven't memorized all of my chorus songs (I'm not the only one, though), but since I only have two solo lines ("You call this a life?" and "You will fare well") and one duet line ("We do our jobs, you take the gate"), I don't have too much to worry about. :)  It was nice to finally see how it all fit together without stopping.  I have a costume fitting tomorrow at 1:00 pm, so I'll finally get to see what it looks like.
