Well, you've read the notes, the notes gave you a sugar high, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently playing Yahtzee and are very confused.

Tonight I have a fitting for my costume.  I was supposed to have one yesterday at 1:00 pm, but Tom the costumer called and said that he wasn't able to finish what he needed to finish for me to try it on.  So, I'll go to rehearsal early tonight and see what it really looks like!

Topic of the Day:  I don't know what the "first" board game that I played was, but growing our family played Sorry a lot and Aggravation.  Monopoly was another game that we had and played, but not as often (it just takes so long).  Now, our game of choice is Phase 10, but that's a card game, not a board game.

DearReaderLaura DR - loved that pic from yesterday!  :)

DR elmore3003 - the film sounds delightful; thanks for the report!

***HEALTH & PATIENCE VIBES*** to DR Michael S.!

DR Cillaliz - I was amazed [not in a good way] at your client's situation.  You are a good soul!

CONGRATULATIONS to DR George on the progress on his re-fi.

DR Ron Pulliam - loved the Cactus Cuties!  :D

DR JoseSPiano - glad you arrived safely and are well settled in.

I finally watched The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. last evening.  How bizarre!  Kind of fun, in a weird sort of way.

"Project Cranberry" continues the rest of this week, so I shall be scarce.  :(

As for the Topic of the Day...

First board was either Checker or Chinese Checkers.

My brothers and I played Monopoly a lot as kids.  In fact, we seemed to buy a new set almost yearly.  Of course, we never played by the real rules, just the "house rules" that had been passed on to us by our cousins and friends.

And there were also the usual suspects: Chutes & Ladders, Candyland, Life, Parcheesi, Risk, Stratego, Battleship (we even had the fancy electronic version complete with sound effects!), and Chess.

I also remember a Bermuda Triangle game which had this magnetic "cloud" that you moved over the board - and hoped that your pieces did not get "lost" in the Bermuda Triangle.  ;)  -And there was also a Titanic board game, or, at least, a ship sinking game, where you tried to have the most number of survivors.  Hmm... Boy does that sound morbid.

Good morning, all! I slept late, and I've spent the last hour taking care of personal business and getting things ready for laundry.

Today, my life is tied up with the pharmacy trip I forgot yesterday, the dry cleaners, and the NYPL Theatre Collection.  After all of that, some work on Victor Herbert music.

The first board game I remember is CANDYLAND, which my cousin Sue forced us to play whenever we visited.

Thursday morning greetings!  There's a hint of spring in the air, but there's also another winter storm on its way  :P

TOD - The first board game I remember playing was Chutes & Ladders.  Some of my favorites, which I still have, were Go to the Head of the Class, Careers, and Barbie: Queen of the Prom.  My fav from DS Rob's childhood was Pizza Party, which we used as an icebreaker when we had exchange students from Japan - no language barrier!

New ending to an old tale:

How To Give A Cat A Pill

1. Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

4. Tak e new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

9. Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink 1 beer to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10 . Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard, and close door on to neck, to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

11. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Drink beer. Fetch bottle of scotch. Pour shot, drink. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Apply whiskey compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw Tee shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

12. Call fire department to retrieve the damn cat from across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.

13. Tie the little bastard's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tigh tly to leg of dining table, find heavy-duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of filet steak. Be rough about it. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

14. Consume remainder of scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

15 . Arrange for SPCA to collect mutant cat from hell and call local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

How To Give A Dog A Pill

1. Wrap it in bacon.
2. Toss it in the air.

I have to agree with BK: THE HOT ROCK just doesn't work. I, too, wanted to love it as I (as well as the rest of the world) was having a love affair with Robert Redford at the time, but it's just dead in the water. I got the DVD some years ago hoping it had aged well or I had somehow grown to be able to appreciate its charms, but they were nonexistent. A real pity.

The board game I first remember playing a lot as a young child was CHUTES AND LADDERS. I used to get SO frustrated with it, but my brother and I played it all the time. Another early board game I really loved was GO TO THE HEAD OF THE CLASS.

I've mentioned here before that I didn't even get introduced to CANDYLAND until I was a sophomore or junior in high school. The younger brother of a neighborhood friend had no one to play with, and I'd go down and play this with him every afternoon when I wasn't busy with school activities.

I've mentioned here before about my fondness for DISNEYLAND, introduced to me at a children's birthday party, and after the party, I just couldn't live without having one for myself, so my mom took me downtown to the "dime store" and got it for me. Played it incessantly for years.

And I've also talked about my adoration of CAREERS which not one of my friends could stand at all. So I didn't get to play it much.

I've never really liked Parcheesi or SORRY or RISK or LIFE.

I did adore Parker Bros.' CLUE and, of course, MONOPOLY. I remember long into the night sessions of MONOPOLY at the beach once we'd come in from the Pavilion

A vacuum created for Penny O to fill:

(http://www.najp.org/articles/articles.gif) (http://www.najp.org/articles/2008/03/lewis-segal-chief-dance-critic.html)

Quote
Endangered dance species...another critic bites the dust
By Sasha Anawalt

Lewis Segal, chief dance critic for the Los Angeles Times, learned Friday that the paper will no longer support a full-time dance critic. His position is being eliminated. This after a week in which he wrote three feature-length reviews, a Sunday piece and a long obit.

In a city where dance riddles the inner sanctums of churches, temples, community centers, clubs, gymnasiums and zocalos, to say nothing of the nearly 280 legit performance spaces in mainstream theaters, large, mid-sized and small -- this signals a gigantic disconnect between the people and press.

Writes Segal, who has been in the post since 1996 and written about dance for the LAT for 12 years before that:

"...my position is being eliminated in the latest round of of staff layoffs and cutbacks...I have followed my supervisors' advice and applied for the Times buyout, which means I'll be off the staff as of the end of this month. However, there is some talk about my freelancing for the paper in the future."

Segal's intrepid and passionate coverage extends to nearly every part of the globe; he is by common consensus one of the most widely travelled arts writers of his generation. It's safe to say that the open, porous and welcoming embrace Angelenos now have particularly for non-Western forms is due to him.

This news comes right as Los Angeles Ballet is making a dent, right as it looks like there might be a relevant and exciting classical company finally anchored in this city. It comes when TV dance shows electrify viewerships and for good reason. Right when there are more languages spoken here than ever before and we must depend on dance watchers to decipher and translate culture from Other to Other. Segal is the right man, the best man, for this job -- and his loss is worth protesting on many fronts.

First board games I remember were Candyland and Chutes and Ladders; Monopoly was something the whole family played, with various visiting cousins, right thru high school; Then there's that game where you conguer the world,(I forget the name) which a group of us played(post college)while running a Xtian guest house in Ann Arbor in the summer of '72, but I havent played any board bgames since then; I vaguely remeber reading(Earl Wilson?)that Andre and Dory Previn were going to do Mr Chips when Richard Burton  & Samanta Eggar were pencilled in for the leads. But I love the way that movie turned out; I'm always careful with the videocassete I made when it was on TCM;Until it's on DVD, I do not want to accidently tape over it

MattH, hope you got my e yesterday--package arrived yesterday, thanks so much!

Being sick (the oft-forgotten first draft of the 11 o'clock number for "Company") has had one benefit--I have made it through some DVDs (like the Burton/Taylor ones) and am now getting through some really old piles of OCRs I have had for years.  Had a very pleasant listen this morning to the "Far From the Madding Crowd" musical with the Calloways.  Some really nice stuff, and Mr. Yeko actually paid for an orchestra on this one.  ;)

We went to the beach twice each summer: in June and August. In June we'd go to Myrtle Beach and stay with some bigshots in Springs Industries at the Springmaid Villa.

In August we'd stay with our cousins at Ocean Drive Beach at their beach house.

Both of these were on the South Carolina coast.

I wasn't invested in -- or put off by -- any of them, but I know what you mean.  I thought his line the least interesting of the three.  Too high-strung/overwrought/flaming queeny -- perfect fit for the designer, too.  :)

I liked both Jillian and Rami very, very much.  When they auf'ed Jillian (I was shocked, because I figured she'd take it all), I was certain Rami would win.

I felt badly for Christian because the horribly insecure little boy inside of him peeped out for the first time during this show...but moreso when they were waiting for the result than before.

Still...Rami and Jillian "have" very successful careers and, to hear Christian tell it, he had nothing on tap.

Tomorrow at 6:15 pm EST, one of Suzanne Pleshette's most overwrought and interesting performances will be seen.

A RAGE TO LIVE, I haven't seen this movie in decades, but Suzanne is splendid.  Hopefully it will be in widescreen.  The main title was one of my favorite Ferrante & Teicher recordings.

Suzanne Pleshette playing a character created by John O'Hara....it was meant to be.

"Where" will it be seen?  Is it on TCM?

This particular film has Suzanne Pleshette raging to live all over the place to no good end for herself or us.

I now think of myself as an expert at pill giving.  I gotta tell you, not all dogs take pills as easily as wrapping them in a piece of food.  Thankfully Sherlock is one of the those but we have had dogs that were more difficult to get a pill down than most of our cats.  Bogie, the sweet cat that he was & who needed so many medications during his lifetime, was an absolute angel about it.

At the end of the list for the ADDITIONAL REPAIRS that my car "needed" since the warranty ended in February, was Right Brake Light out.

My mechanic never mentioned this on the telephone when he called me or I most certainly would have said "Yes" to fixing it.

I noticed it when they drove my car out to me yesterday morning.  GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.   Went to AutoZone and bought a bulb and the young man working there said (when asked) that yes he would replace it for me....  $4.29 total.  Probably much less than would have been added to my bill at Westgate Chrysler Jeep.

The no news has apparently been because my e-mails of the last two days have not reached their destination - odd, because it's a professional office e-mail where they're being sent.  I finally had an e-mail asking for some details this morning - I've replied twice - and both e-mails didn't reach the person, but two others (without the details) did.  I just resent again, as requested, and asked for confirmation of receipt.  If I don't have that in ten minutes I'll give a call.

Back from lunch.  We went back to our longtime favorite Szechuan place Shan Dong.

We started with the complimentary Sweet/Sour Soup.  It was yummilicious.

For an entree, I had the special Shan Dong Chicken and shared a plate of potstickers with my two luncheon companions.

I had several small cups of tea and a glass of water.

It was all very good.  I am full.

That is all.

Either way, I think I prefer reading.

In the mail today I got the Blu-ray disc of THE ROOKIE. Disney was obviously late sending review copies since the disc streeted on Tuesday, but anyway I watched it this afternoon. Very heart-warming/tear-inducing little melodrama. Amazing how they managed to have TWO come-from-behind stories within the boundaries of one movie.

The disc is close to flawless with a nice uncompressed 5.1 soundtrack. The movie runs 128 minutes, so all I had time for on the disc this afternoon was the movie. I'll get to the bonus features tonight.

CONGRATULATIONS to DR George on the progress on his re-fi.

Thanks!  I got a call from the title company and they're going to send me (overnight by UPS) the documents that I need to sign to close the loan!!  If I wanted (and I don't), I could drive up to Federal Way to do the signing, but that's about an hour north of here and I don't want to have to use a full day of vacation time to do that.  I will just need to sign the marked pages and have a couple of other pages notarized.  Then I'll send them back with their pre-paid label and it's done!  And the best part is that I won't have to make a mortgage payment for March or April!!  Two months of no payment means two months of saving that money!! ;D

Which narrator will you have, the author (http://www.learnoutloud.com/Sale-Section/Biography/Everyday-People/Garlic-and-Sapphires/14065#) or, IMHO, the superior audio by narrator Bernadette Dunne? (http://www.learnoutloud.com/Catalog/Sports-and-Hobbies/Cooking-and-Wine/Garlic-and-Sapphires/14064#)

Either way, I think I prefer reading.

Jane - I'll be listening to the Dunne version.  Agreed, reading with your eyes is better, but risky while driving  ;)

And the day that JJ left to be adopted I was crying too much to post. Even though I know that he will be better off not having to share his people with 4 dogs, it still made me very sad because I could tell that Der B and SWW had grown attached to him and that it was going to be hard for them to say goodbye.

I had such a hard time giving my Ociee cat up for adoption, even though she was going to a wonderful home and would have been queen of the house. I had only intended to get her fixed and then adopt her out. But she hid the entire week she was there and the people gave her back. Boy, am I glad that it didn't work out, and she seems to be as well!

DRGinny, goddaughter Charlotte and I are crazy about Pete Hamill's FOREVER, the novel thay NEW AMASTERDAM seems to be plagiarizing.  It's wonderful and everyone who loves Jacdkj Finney's  great TIME AND AGAIN should read Hamill's book!

DR JRand57, as a lover of POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES, I can assure you that nothing in MISS PETTIGREW . . . reminded me of the Bette Davis film.

Two months of no payment means two months of saving that money!! ;D

Not a bad day of auditions.  Our "no show" ratio continues to be very(!) low - which, in the long run, is a good thing.  However, instead of ending the day at the estimated time of 5:00, we didn't finish until 5:50.  We shall see what happens tomorrow.

Quote
Snark Attack

Chuck Klosterman, the writer who smartly or snarkily or smart-snarkily analyzes pop culture (and sports), makes a highbrow/lowbrow appearance at the Highline Ballroom tonight. In “The Fiction of Criticism and Vice Versa,” Mr. Klosterman will discuss his career skewering glam rock, cereal and the impact of “The Real World,” as well as read from his forthcoming debut novel, “Downtown Owl,” set in his home state, North Dakota. Since he got his start covering music, don’t be surprised if there are musical guests. But do be surprised if any of them express sincerity.

"Smart-snarkily" - I like that!

Jeanne - Unless a return is really simple, I don't think it's possible to ensure a complete and accurate return at the lowest cost :)  - but the most important thing to do, I think, is go through the prior year return and make sure every single item of income or deduction on there is somehow accounted for on a list, either with the current year's number or with a notation of NONE for this year.  That should cut down on the need for the preparer to have to contact the client over and over.  Even if they've been guaranteed a set fee for the return, I can almost assure the client that if  a preparer feels like they're unexpectedly spending too much time on the return relative to the fee, they will start to cut corners time-wise, and/or charge you an amount next year that is more commensurate with the work they did this year.

Thanks, Fred. I'm not sure I phrased my question well--I certainly wasn't trying to be snarky. What you said makes sense and is close to what I do. I can't keep things in my head like I used to--"What year did I sell such-and-such property?" etc., so I may make a notation that said property was sold in 2005, even if it's not relevant to 2006 or 2007, just so I know I haven't forgotten something. These notes are for myself, even though they are on the spreadsheets I give my accountant. And I set up my spreadsheets each year based on the previous year.

The first tax accountant I used was aggressive about saving me money. That was great! I think the guy I'm using now is trying to reduce the Federal deficit. I'll use him this year just because he's familiar with my situation, but I plan to change next year.

But seriously, do you think the guy you're using now isn't watching out for your best interests? If so, I wonder if you should cut it off now, even if it means going on extension this year.

The story alone is rather bizarre.  I’m even more shocked that as his lawyer you couldn’t just give him the shorts when you saw him. ???

You are so very good to your clients.

Thank you, but the story didn't end there.  I dropped off the boxers this morning at the jail. this afternoon I get a call from my client. They transferred him to another jail and didn't give him the blasted underwear.  So I talked to that jail, they told me that they don't accept underwear from people outside the jail it has to be purchased from commissary.  FINALLY they told me if he's indigent (he is) they would give him a pair of white boxers from the jail.  I'll find out tomorrow if he has his underwear.  It's outrageous if you ask me.

I shared the Floyd clip with lots of folks---very well done and brilliant editing!

I also liked the raccoon clip. It reminded me of the many nights when a family of raccoons used to sneak in our cat door. Once they dragged a whole bag of Science Diet through the door but couldn't quite get it through, so they ate out of it like a feed bag!

I love Yahtzee, BTW. It was one of the most popular games in our family, along with Monopoly and Clue. We had a travel trailer and camped a lot, so we spent a lot of time playing board games in the evening.

I noticed a barbershop on the way home, and my DH and I decided that we should open a barbershop with pingpong tables so you can play while you're waiting for your barber. And of course, they would serve tapas.

But seriously, do you think the guy you're using now isn't watching out for your best interests? If so, I wonder if you should cut it off now, even if it means going on extension this year.

I've always been meticulous with my taxes--everything FULLY documented and very straight-arrow. I asked him several times about various expenses to my house and he nixed them all, saying, "That isn't material" or "That's a repair." Yet my reading of the IRS booklets says otherwise. I certainly do not wish to use him for 2008, as I expect to sell my house in the coming months. As for this year, there is no home sale and things should be pretty straight-forward. I'm anxious to get everything organzied and to him BEFORE my move. Everything will be in storage in VA for several months, so if I misplace or forget a receipt--well, I won't be coming back for it. He's competent, but no, I don't think he represents my best interests. I just don't think it will make a big difference until I sell the house.

I had a fun thing happen last week. I found a song by a group called Kory and the Fireflies (from Sioux City!) and used it for the new season of Trading Spaces. The song's called "She's Coming Back Again", so it was perfect to herald the return of Paige Davis. The network loved it and licensed it for the whole campaign.

Last week, the band was in Atlanta playing a private party at the Hard Rock, and Kory showed up at my editing room with a bunch of CD's. He wanted to thank me in person for using his song. (He made LOTS of money from that!) I have placed a lot of songs in films and trailers, but this is the first time someone went to some effort to thank me. So that was cool.

The funny thing is, if you listen to the whole song, it's about a woman who dumps her boyfriend, loses all her money and friends and then comes crawling back. So I couldn't help but picture Paige driving along and hearing the song on the radio. First: "There's my song"! And then: "Heeeeyyyyyy...wait a minute...."

I had a nice chat with the Dell guy who was in the Himalayas in India while we talked.  They are sending the tech back out to replace the motherboard. I also read on the net how to fix my "piece of crap" gateway laptop that I haven't used in years.  It's an easy fix...but I can't find my little tiny phillips screw driver, so it will have to wait until tomorrow.  I hope it works, if I can fix it up enough to do email and open stuff I need for work, it would be a great road computer. Then if it dies it dies. I'm going to take it to the office and see if my computer geek friends can help me out about it
