I have a good guess what today's SONG OF THE DAY shall be! ;)

This afternoon I am going to hear a friend of mine sing a role in a new opera premiere in Brooklyn.

Good morning, all! I finally found the remote, not far from where it usually is, and I don't know how I kept overlooking it for over an hour. When I discovered it, I was quite embarrassed by my stupidity and at wasting over an hour fixating onsomething so madly.
This morning, the last two CD shelves and cleaning out the other closet before I can mop the floor, which I'll do just beore I leave for the movies. I've got some writing to accomplish as well, so I'll begin by tossing out some needless junk.

Sunday morning greetings! Even with all the reminders, I completely forgot to reset our clocks last night. Not a problem, because anything we'd be late for today has been cancelled due to the snow.

Was it just me? Am I just too old? Or does the writing on SNL really suck now? The only thing that I found mildly funny was the claymation.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I'm almost all set to fly back to NYC! (via Memphis)

Thanks for all the Travel Vibes! *Apparently, they've been dealing with high winds the past two in NYC, so... We shall see...
-
Was it just me? Am I just too old? Or does the writing on SNL really suck now? The only thing that I found mildly funny was the claymation.
I'm not sure I'd say it sucks, just very(!) inconsistent. There have been some shows that have had great sketches from the opening segment to the usually-throw-away sketch in the final slot, but then there have been others that have just laid there like an egg the whole time.
As for last night's episode - there were some funny moments, but nothing REALLY funny. However, I also know that the writers are still "recovering" from the WGA strike, and in a very rare move, they are actually producing four live shows back to back - usually, they only do three in a row. -Heck, the first show back after the strike seemed to consist mainly of video pieces.
I know some people who have totally written off the show, but I still watch it. I guess it's a tradition for me. -And I always try to make it to the signature piano intro for the closing music.
-
Was it just me? Am I just too old? Or does the writing on SNL really suck now? The only thing that I found mildly funny was the claymation.
LOL, DR Edi! I had the same reaction. Loved Amy's opening number, but everything afterward made me realize I'm no longer in the SNL demographic.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR BD

I don't watch SNL anymore.....if I want to see a group of sort of talented people standing around reading cue cards, I will watch reruns of Will and Grace.
And yes, DR FJL.....I think you asked yesterday if Cara Williams was supposed to be the new Lucille Ball some decades ago. She certainly was closer than Debra Mess.
My favorite Pete & Gladys episode involved an anniversary gift that had to be purchased at the last minute, banks were closed, and so all of the pennies and coins from the Piggy Bag had to be used. Gladys was trying to get across the street with the coins cupped in her skirt and kept dropping them while the light changed from red to green. It took her several tries to make the strip. And Cara Williams could be funny.
She was, I think, more subtle than Lucy and certainly didn't have Lucy's built! But she was terrific. Love her in NEVER STEAL ANYTHING SMALL.
-
And The Song Of The Day Is: BAUBLES,BANGLES AND BEADS
This fits in perfectly with the dance posted by DRMBARNUM yesterday. ;D
MAD Tv is where it's at for me.....SNL..... :P It also seems to me to be a bunch of people trying to come up with dumb characters to hang a stupid movie on and make the leap to features. Some of them have done it.
-
TOD: What was the first time you watched SNL?
For me it was a rerun in the first season. I had avoided it because it seemed like a stunt to me....Live TV?
I was flipping around the channels, and there were these people dressed in Bee costumes. I started to laugh, stayed for the rest of the show, and watched it for MANY MANY seasons.....
-
Good morning!
Back to winter temperatures even though it is certainly beautiful otherwise outside. Not a cloud in the sky.
-
I stopped watching SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE regularly once the original cast was gone to bigger (not necessarily better) things. I did love those first five years. Over the years, I'd check in with other casts when there was publicity about one of the hot new faces on the show. But I've never been back in the habit.
-
TV Reminder:
DIRT (on FX)
DEXTER (Season 1 rehashings on CBS).

TOD: What was the first time you watched SNL?
...
Not my first viewing, but one of my favorites was very early - before fall 1977 - when Candice Bergen was guest host. It was near Christmas and they ended the program skating in Rockefeller Center. It was very sweet, very Christmasy, and very New York.
-
I have to start ANTONIO GAUDI today, and I have no idea what kind of film it is at all. Always fun to explore something old that's absolutely brand new to you.
Then, later today, SUPERMAN RETURNS.
-
I think DR MATTH said it best.....it is no longer a habit. For years I wouldn't MISS the show because we would all talk about it in groups during the week.
I was a bit confused by TORCHWOOD last night, too. I like the sci fi stories, but I guess I like it best when it concentrates on the characters and their personal interactions.
-
I'm up, I'm up. Early. I really do not like that they did this early daylight savings time - my VCR doesn't update automatically, and if I do it by hand, then it will update when it's supposed to and I'll have to undo it, and it's just so pointless and stupid and whatever they think their brilliance is in doing this, there will be a study in five years that says how pointless it was.

LOL.....I remember Jane Curtin or Gilda Radner in a sketch with Candice on this show....and the ad lib was: You are beautiful, but you sure are dumb..... And Candice nearly fell off the sofa... ;D

I was a very loyal fan until around the time Will Ferrell left. I watched it from the beginning, because I was a fan of Lemmings and The National Lampoon Radio Hour.
I find MadTV much funnier now and much more creative. The recurring characters you mentioned on SNL aren't that funny (to me) in the first place, and the joke of the person encountering and dealing with them gets old fast, and there's often no payoff, the skit just ends.
-
I was a bit confused by TORCHWOOD last night, too. I like the sci fi stories, but I guess I like it best when it concentrates on the characters and their personal interactions.
I got irritated by the Owen's dead but he's alive but not really but he's a monster, and the the team was also chasing around this smoke demon, too, and the Weevils were out in force (who knew there were so many of them in Cardiff). Just seemed a jumble. Held my attention fine, but I felt I was constantly being jerked in different directions without quite getting my bearings to where I was originally.
-
The most irritating reset I have to accomplish when we do DST is resetting the information on my answering machine. It is a ROYAL PAIN getting the date and time stamp on that thing every time we change times.

Jrand - I didn't ask about Cara Williams recently, but I know I was fascinated by her as a a concept :) ever since i read the book about CBS, REFLECTIONS IN A BLOODSHOT EYE.
This from the wikipedia entry about James Aubrey
"There were charges of favoritism in purchasing programs. Aubrey's friend Keefe Brasselle, who had bit parts in several movies in the 1940s and 1950s and met Aubrey when they both worked at KNXT-TV, had no experience as a producer. "A 1965 edition of George Raft," said David Susskind, particularly apt as there were also rumors Brasselle had ties to the Mafia. Nevertheless, Aubrey scheduled three shows from Brasselle's Richelieu Productions for the 1964–65 season, all without pilots, still an almost unheard-of practice. (The shows were The Baileys of Balboa, a sitcom with Paul Ford; the newspaper drama The Reporter; and The Cara Williams Show, a sitcom starring red-head Williams, billed as the next Lucille Ball.) Brasselle would personally supervise The Reporter, shot in New York City. Costs skyrocketed on Brasselle's shows – after nine episodes, The Reporter was $450,000 over budget – and all three bombed – The Reporter running only three months, Baileys until April 1964; and Cara Williams finishing the season."

I did think THE DEBBIE REYNOLDS SHOW was going to be the "next Lucille Ball." I loved everything about that show, including the "With a Little Love" theme song.
-
Sorry DR FJL.....perhaps the original poster will set me straight, so to speak.
Yes that whole Aubrey-Brasselle fiasco has been written about by many people. It is a fascinating look at what was going on at CBS at that time. One story is told that Aubrey was out in LA making the party rounds and saying how old Lucy was and how she was finished and that her show was on its last legs....this was in '63 at the end of the first season of "The Lucy Show."
What he didn't realize is that Ball - almost unrecognizable without the lifts she wore for her show - was standing nearby and heard every word he said.
-
Whatever happened to Bobby Riha? (of THE DEBBIE REYNOLDS SHOW and the Gene Kelly JACK AND THE BEANSTALK)
I guess I could trot over to imdb and look.
-

Yes indeed. And DEBBIE banned all cigarette ads from her program, and quit when NBC tried to sneak one in.....that was BIG news, too!
And later that week Bob Hope joked after seeing an Ann-Margret performance: "I haven't seen moves like that since Debbie Reynolds had to sit through a commercial for Winston." ;D

Didn't have one. The town I lived in was so small that our telephone numbers were only four digits:
3958 was our phone number.

I was the one who mentioned Cara Williams being touted as the next Lucille Ball back in the day.
Just to set the record straight.

Sorry, DR MATTH. Thanks!!! 8)

I remember being very shocked when Debbie Reynolds' show didn't make it past the first season. I thought for sure with her being a big movie star that the show would take off big time.
Remember the season when all these movie stars were coming to TV: Shirley MacLaine, Anthony Quinn, James Stewart, and Henry Fonda. None of their shows did well though Fonda's THE SMITH FAMILY did get renewed for one more season.
-
OMG - for awhile, we also had to lift the receiver and give 4 numbers to an operator to get people locally!!!!
-
Louella Parsons - VEnom 2-6969
-
I liked THE SMITH FAMILY, but I always thought Fonda and Janet Blair weren't a very good match.
-
Did anyone have a party line (a la PILLOW TALK) growing up? We didn't, but my maternal grandmother who lived in a small country farm area did, and shared the line with three other people. Her telephone ring was two short rings.
-
No one rode a bicycle like JIMMY STEWART on THE JIMMY STEWART SHOW.
-
Debra Messing = LUcy 2-1010

Remember when Andy Griffith came back to TV after flopping as a movie star. The show was HEADMASTER, and it only lasted half a season. In the second half of the season, he went back to a more homey sitcom format, but it didn't work either.

Ah, me, such fond TV memories.

Good Morning, once again!
Greetings from the Chattanooga Airport. Well, that's at least what they're calling this building... A little earlier, I thought I would walk around the airport just to see what was here. Well, about 45 seconds later, I was done with my self-guided tour since there are only five(!) gates here. ;)

What a difference a week makes. Last Sunday we didn't reach Page Four until after 1:00 p.m. Left Coast Time.

Turned out to be a very bright and beautiful day outside. Exactly how March should be.
-
Right now I am catching up on the final episode of Ugly Betty (from before the strike). Then I will run across the street to grab a bottle of cheap champagne for mimosas to with the brunch I am making for my roommate and friend.
-
And the word of the day is: GEWGAW!
I used to enjoy the TV series GEWGAW. For some reason when I was young, I thought Buck Owens was kind of sexy.
-
...And when I was checking in, I was asked if I would like to volunteer to take a later flight back to NYC (via Memphis) - apparently, there was a flight this morning that was cancelled, so there's a bit a of a back-up in passengers. Well... They were offering free round trip flights, however, if I left later, that would involve sitting in this airport for another six hours, and not getting into LGA until a little before midnight, so... I passed. However...
I'm sitting at the gate right now, and there are some people already in line waiting to get proper seat assignments for the flight - apparently, there's some rule that once a flight is 2/3 full, then they don't have to guarantee the seat assignments if there have been travel issues earlier in the day - ?? - or something like that. One of those people in line is the woman who was right behind me in line when I checked in, so it looks like I got the last guaranteed spot on the plane. Hmm... Needless to say, she - and the two other people traveling with her - don't look too happy right now. So...
If it looks like a LOT of people are waiting to get on this flight, and if Northwest ups the compensation for volunteering to get bumped off the flight, well... We'll see.

They need to invent a combination TV remote and one of those emergency "I have fallen and I can't get up" buttons, that we elederly folk could wear around our necks. That would do away with about 50% of aged angst.

It's what we used to use when I pushed you in your stroller. ;D

Jose, maybe they'll offer you a lifetime pass to the VIP lounge at the Chattanooga Airport. :)

The phone number when I was growing up was VErmont 8-9108. My friend next door, Jan, had VErmont 9-8009. I am amazed that I remember them; I certainly don't recall the many numbers I've had since.
-
We had a party line for many years. At that time I don't think a private line was an option. Sometimes you'd pick the phone up to make a call and someone else was on. It was a big deal to finally get a private line.

I think the first one we had in Tacoma was Proctor something, but I was too young to use the phone much at that time. When we moved to our house, when I was nine or ten, the exchange became Skyline 9. Ironically, that is my exchange today, only we call it 759.
-
So... Did the Exchanges eventually become the first two number of the three-digit prefix? -And is that why there are letters associated with the "buttons"?

...And it also appears that I'm about to board, so...

I remember that Keefe Brasselle hosted a summer variety show for two, or possibly three, summers. I believe that Ruth Buzzi appeared on the show. They did this really stupid song on the show (several times), called The Ha Ha Song; and try as I might I couldn't keep from laughing along with it.

So did she.

Do you still have Blue Laws on the books, Jrand?

DR Vixmom - such a busy life you lead! Hope you have a chance to catch up on your sleep.
Reading your stories brings back wonderful memories. I couldn't do it again but it was grand while I was doing it. I must admit you do at least as much with one child as I did with two.
Consider yourself lucky you never have to be in two places at the same time. ;)
-
For DR Ron Pulliam - SNark1-1111
:-[
-
In the early Sixties, after we were no longer on a party line; if you called a number and got a busy signal, you could listen over the sound of the busy signal and other people's conversations bled over onto the line. I don't mean the people you were originally calling, but other random conversations from all over town. I used to hear some juicy stuff - well, juicy to a pre-teen.
-
My exchange when growing up was COlfax-5.
I grew up with a party line; we still have the remnants of one. If mum wants to call me without yelling to the basement, she'll dial 1-9-265 and our last four digits. The caller i.d. will simply state "unknown caller;" when picking up, there are two short buzzes, then conversation can occur.

Hmmm, an edited transcript!

DR JEANNE we were both VE's!!
Yes! And so was BK for a while.

My exchanges (and actual telephone numbers) were in all the Kritzer books. First TExas, which was changed to UPton, then VErmont, when we moved. My father's restaurant was DUnkirk, the Santa Monica exchange was EXbrook, many of my friends in high school were WEbster, and Hollywood was, of course, HOllywood.
This is fun. Keith was EXbrook in Santa Monica, then VErmont when they moved over by Hamilton High.
I remember the changes until we became VErmont & never changed. Of course, like the restaurant, my Dad's number was DUnkirk. It is the only phone number I still remember, which I'm sure has to do with him having the number for the first 45 years of my life.
-
So... Did the Exchanges eventually become the first two number of the three-digit prefix? -And is that why there are letters associated with the "buttons"?
Oh, my! Do I feel OLD!!
-
We had a party line for many years. At that time I don't think a private line was an option. Sometimes you'd pick the phone up to make a call and someone else was on. It was a big deal to finally get a private line.
We briefly had a party line, only briefly because doctors had to have a private line. Later my father got his own phone number. It was fun having one number for us kids and one for my parents. Back then few people had such a thing.
-
I forgot about calling your own number so someone else in the house would pick up.
I remember even after we didn't have a party line connections often got crossed. We had some fun and interesting conversations with strangers.
-
So... Did the Exchanges eventually become the first two number of the three-digit prefix? -And is that why there are letters associated with the "buttons"?
Yes to both questions :)
-
This is fun. Keith was EXbrook in Santa Monica, then VErmont when they moved over by Hamilton High.

And Jane and Keith were also VEs.

SAFE TRAVEL VIBES DR JOSE!
-
WHERE'D the day go??
-
So... Did the Exchanges eventually become the first two number of the three-digit prefix? -And is that why there are letters associated with the "buttons"?
DR Jose - The beginning of our land-line number still corresponds to the letter exchange that Richard remembers from when he was a kid: GArfield = 42
I used the letters on the phone buttons as recently as summer before last when we got a new phone system at work. I was having trouble remembering my new extension, 4926, so created a mnemonic device. Well, two, actually: on good days my number spells VOCI (which sounds like a musical term or something to me); on bad days, it spells UNAG.

DR JEANNE is this your uncle up on the boom photographing Gale?

You can also play jingle bells with the buttons.

For me on tv tonight: BIG BROTHER, the Oprah show (which i liked okay) and DEXTER.
We had a huge snow storm yesterday. :(
And the plows did not come to clear my road till after noon today (i think the snow stopped in the middle of the night). For some reason they do crappier service when it snows on the weekend!

Okay, I was just wondering. I think the Judy Garland signature that I have is on the back of a receipt.
-
If we had an exchange, it was prior to my time as a telephone user...I e-mailed my mom to find out what it was.
-
When I was a youngster (circa 1975) I thought that SNL was all abot drugs. It wasn't until the late 1980s that I began to watch the show...around the time of Toonces the Driving Cat and Church Lady.
Shortly after those characters and actors left the show I stopped watching.
-
Well, it has not rained to day so I guess I have no excuse really NOT to do yard work...and my yard does look pretty ratty...so...
-
As for SNL, I was devoted to it for the first five years or so. How long were the original "Not Ready for Prime Time" players a part of the show?
Here, immediately following SNL was Chiller Theater with Bill Cardille, which I always stayed up to watch. When Cardille retired Chiller, and Eddie Murphy became eponymous with SNL, I turned elsewhere.
I caught a few episodes over the years, if the host or musical guest was someone I wanted to see. David Duchovny was a grand host, as was Alec Baldwin.
I do remember watching quite a bit of SNL when Christine Ebersole and Robert Downey, Jr were part of the cast. I was also accidentally watching when Barbra Streisand appeared on "Coffee Talk."
I didn't like Chris Farley, Eddie Murphy, Joe Piscopo or Kevin Neally and many others, so I really saw no reason to tune in.
Over the years, I also felt that the sketches went on far too long and often meandered to their close.
-
I have completed my laundry. :D
I have also burned my copy of Christine Ebersole's APPLAUSE to cds. ;D
-
Mom could't remember what exchange we had in Medford, but she rememberd that her mom's in Portland was ALpine.
-
And the word of the day is: GEWGAW!
According to Cassandra, it was bad enough that Rose was totally chav, but the capper was that she wore a gewgaw too many... on each and every limb!
(Yes, BK, chav is a word. Go ahead, look it up.)
-
And the word of the day is: GEWGAW!
WAGWEG spelled backwards.
But you knew that already.
-
Good Afternoon!
Greetings from the Memphis International Airport... And due to wind conditions around LGA, my flight is currently delayed an hour. So...
-
You can also play jingle bells with the buttons.
OH! I did have one of those "Telephone Song Books" when I was growing up. -And my first cellphone, actually had a "song" mode for the keypad which meant that it would "beep" in the pitches rather than just one standard tone/beep.
-
I have completed my laundry. :D
I have also burned my copy of Christine Ebersole's APPLAUSE to cds. ;D
Hmm... Frankly, I didn't think that performance was worth preserving on CD nor in my memory. ;)

There are a group of ladies sitting next to me who are heading to NYC for some sort of gathering. For some of them, it's their first trip to NYC, for others, their second or third. They were discussing their dining and shopping options for the week. Well, needless to say, I had to admit that I was sort of eavesdropping, and gave them a list of suggestions. ;)
-
And the Memphis Airport is busy today too. There are even lines to get into the restaurants right now. ???
-
And, yes, because of the extra hour of waiting here, I went ahead and treated myself to some BBQ. YUM! :)
-
...and the Weevils were out in force (who knew there were so many of them in Cardiff).
There have always been Weevils in Cardiff. They just don't get much attention in Wales because they are lousy singers.
;)

DR Ron Pulliam - I did not mean to offend. In fact, I thought you wore your title of "Snark Meister" as a badge of honor. ;)
-
Rob brought Richard's car back today and shoveled his car out of the snowbank created when the street was plowed last night:
-
I hope they realize how lucky they are!
I just wish I could get some sort of commission!
;D
-
And Richard cleaned out the bottom of the driveway. As you can see, conditions have improved tremendously since yesterday:
-
Back to exchanges for a bit...
Were the names for the exchanges standardized? Or could they be customized according to the locale?
-
One ringy-dingy
Two ringy-dingy...

Thatsa lotta snow!

I used to enjoy the TV series GEWGAW. For some reason when I was young, I thought Buck Owens was kind of sexy.
These days, Roy Clark would be classified as a "bear."
Just thought I'd throw that in.
-
Hmm... Frankly, I didn't think that performance was worth preserving on CD nor in my memory. ;)
Well, it's better than Bacall's playing to the top row of the balcony on the dvd of the teevee version. . . . :-\
-
DR GEORGE has anyone greeted you yet by saying: Hello, Dolly!
Nope...not yet, anyway. :)
-
They need to invent a combination TV remote and one of those emergency "I have fallen and I can't get up" buttons, that we elederly folk could wear around our necks. That would do away with about 50% of aged angst.
The other 50% of aged angst being when the emergency button/remote control is in the significant other's hands.

Thanks! I'm certainly going to need 'em!! ;)

Off to a VERY long rehearsal! Have a good day, all. ;D

DR JEANNE is this your uncle up on the boom photographing Gale?
No, Jack. I don't see Eddie anywhere in that photo.

Lovely photos, Ginny.
-
Cool and crisp here--jacket weather--but bright sun. A really gorgeous day.
-
Well... It looks like they're trying to get clearance to fly out earlier... Well... It looks like they didn't get it... In any case... I think I'm going to shut down and take care of some reading until flight time - whatever time that ends up being. So, until I'm back in NYC...
Laters...

In Brooklyn mine was NEvins 8
But My favorite was BUtterfield 8
-
It did turn into one of those lovely early spring days (pre-Spring!). Maybe just a bit cool for sitting outside at lunchtime, but still beautiful to look out the window, see early spring flowers (my daffodills are in full bloom), and buds on some of the trees.
-
I do wish some enterprising company would release the Bacall/Hagman APPLAUSE on DVD. SOme of the show is gone, but I'd still like to have it.
-
I had a great afternoon of viewing starting with two episodes of MEDIUM, season 1. I pulled this off the shelf to watch while I cooked and ate lunch. I began with the very poignant episode of 1st grader Bridgett playing with a little boy at school only to learn that he's a ghost that only she and her mother can see. Such a beautiful episode.
-
And the second one I watched was my favorite of season 1, the one where defense attorney Watt has Allison on the stand trying to get her to admit she's psychic, and she turns the tables on him in a most satisfying way.
-
Next I watched Hiroshi Teshigahara's tone poem to architect Antonio Gaudi. Wow, was this thing a surprise. I was expecting a narrative film about the man, and it's just a mood piece about his work.
Beautiful photography and stunning images of his various artististic achievements, but very frustrating in a way since I don't know all that much about the man, I didn't know where these famous buildings and sculptures are or when they were done, and longed for a real documentary about their creation. More frustrating in that in the last ten minutes, we start to get just a tidbit of information about this magnificent church he took over the construction of before he died. I wish we could have gotten this kind of information about the other astounding pieces focused on during the film. Why just about this last famous creation? Who knows?
-
The original theatrical trailer for ANTONIO GAUDI was also on the first disc in the set, and I watched that, too. Criterion didn't even bother to subtitle the last text frames of the trailer. Weird.
-
She was the most beautiful girl in town, and the easiest to find. Just call BUtterfield 8!
I love ALpine.
DR JOSE I don't know how the exchanges were chosen. I think it was a closely guarded secret of the Bell Telephone Company....where the joke used to be, if you don't like us, take your business to another phone company.
-
Back from a music rehearsal. I will rant more in tomorrow's notes, but these absolute Nazi cretin bastards at eight-thirty in the morning on a Sunday had the I5 shut down to ONE LANE for seven miles. It took forty minutes to go go five of those miles. I hurled some vile epithets as I drove by the workers who, you know, were sweeping the freeway so that it's spotless. I was so angry I couldn't even see straight. I tried a new route going home, and while it adds fifteen minutes to the drive, I think I'm going to try it tomorrow because I think it will avoid most of the Hollywood and downtown and I5 traffic - it's taking the 134 to the 210 east which junctions to the 57 which goes all the way to the 91 and lets me off one off-ramp before I get off for the Chance. So, I'll save ten minutes on the 91 (it takes ten minutes to junction from the 5 to the 91 and then drive all the way to the off-ramp you need for the Chance).
Rehearsal went pretty smoothly. The guy who read for General Mills, while a very nice chap, is not up to the task.

Is there a drearier movie with a more sparkling cast than SEX AND THE SINGLE GIRL?
Natalie Wood and Tony Curtis are both beautiful, Henry Fonda and Lauren Bacall in their prime....great color, costumes and sets....and still....no go.
-
Page Seven Dorothy, Lion, Tin Man, and Scarecrow Dance!!!
[Has anyone else ever noticed the grammar error on the sign? It says "Witches Castle" instead of the correct "Witch's Castle." I guess the Ozians weren't so great with possessives.]

It was on in high definition on MOJO the other day, and I watched about 10 minutes of it. Really terrible and such a shame with such a great cast and such lush production values.
-
Thanks DR JEANNE....that episode must have been photographed by the B team.

Prime Time Musicals was one of the first BK CD's I ever bought, before I even knew who BK was......and it is one of my favorites.
-
I completed my afternoon viewing with another MEDIUM from Season 1. This one guest starred the oh-so-handsome and sweet Reed Diamond (how I miss JOURNEYMAN!) playing a guy Allison kept insisting was a serial killer. Of course, she finally figured out that she was seeing the future version of him; the one in the present hadn't started killing girls yet.
-

Do You have PLANET EARTH on BLU-RAY and is it as wonderful as some of friends say it is ?

Has anyone seen the FAMILY AFFAIR dvd's. They are by MPI who messed up the first season of MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY. I don't want the syndicated episodes, or if they don't have the full opening credits for each show.
-
Is there anyone out there old enough to remember Linda Laurie?
The Telephone topic reminded me of "Ambrose (Part Five)"
Linda wrote "Ruby Red Dress" and "Delta Dawn"

I do have it, and it is stunning in every way. Pure reference quality video (audio is very good but regular Dolby Digital so nothing special) that takes the breath away every time I watch any of its eleven segments.

Thanks to DR SlipShod DP Colin and I watched "Company" on Saturday night. I was prepared for the worst and thus quite enjoyed it. The instruments gimmick was distracting and so very not needed! I did not care for "Joanne" (particularly in "The Little Things you Do Together" and whilst I liked the lead, he kept reminding me of how Bronson Pinochet (sp) played in "Putting It Together". I really enjoyed Marta's "Another Hundred People".
I would think I have seen "Company" more times than any other musical.
-
At last there seems to be some interesting pop music out there:
Adele "Chasing Pavements" (England?)
Snow Patrol "Chasing Cars" (Irish)
BWO "Sunshine In The Rain" (Swedish)
Duffy "Mercy". (Welsh)
I guess DR Jose may know of these artists.

Spent most of the day helping Rod from across the street move items from his house to my house. They are moving next weekend and still needed to get rid of a lot of stuff...and wow, some of it was pretty darn nice stuff! They had some furnishings and household items that they thought the new Iraqi family might have some use for, as well as some yard furniture for myself.
I will sure miss that tall, muscular, hunk of a neighbor, and his wife too. Such nice people. Of course Rod works around the corner at the State Mental Hospital (where they filmed ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST," so perhaps he and I can get together for lunch sometime.

Now, I am awaiting my buddy Jim. He and I are gonna go get some dinner at Red Robin.

I gotta tell you.

Did anyone ever try to call a phone # they heard in a movie or tv show?
I remember one of Agnes of God (which took place in Montreal) I saw it before the release. The phone # was not working.
I did try to call when I was younger the # Echo Valley 2-6809.
I just couldn't find where Echo Valley was. I thought it was in Southern Cal somewhere.
-
Thanks Michael - now I shall be singing "you can talk to Jesus on the Royal Telephone" for the rest of the day. LOL

Most successful "phone" song - "He'll Have To Go" (Jim Reeves)
Homer & Jethro's version is fun and even Jeanne Black's answer song was successful.
-
We had a party line when I was a kid. Ours was one long ring. For a few years, someone would call the other party every Sunday night during dinner, and we would listen to the phone ring and ring and ring and ring; the phone was wall-mounted next to the dinner table.

Greetings folks.
I am back from Long Island. Anthony is staying out there until Wednesday. He will visit his dear older friend (she will be 85 on May 1) and do some other Long Island errands and then he will return to NYC for summer stock auditions. Here's hoping he gets some summer work!
-
I set up the old/new computer for Rose (Ant's mother) and everything works, except for the printer and scanner. She doesn't use them so it's not a problem but Anthony was hoping to use them while he was out there. The problem is the equipment is old so the drivers on the software disks don't work with XP. I can get a driver for the scanner from the HP Web site (I didn't download it when we were out there because it's a 76 megabyte file and we have dial-up) but it appears there is no legal driver update for his 10 year old printer. The workaround will be, if/when he needs to print something on Long Island he will go to the basement where we have put the old computer, set it up along with the printer and print it out down there. He doesn't want to invest in a new printer for LI because he's rarely out there anymore but he doesn't want to toss this printer yet because it has two full ink cartridges. Oh, technology!
-
I now must go back and read Saturday's notes. It appears that Dear Vixmom had some kind of incident.
-
But before I go, love to Danise, if you're lurking!!!
-
I only remember the phone ringing for us. Did you ever try to answer it?
I remember my sister picking up the receiver and hung up one night after it had rung for several minutes. That, of course, only made the person call back again.
-
LOL DR Laura, a hello might have worked better.

Dinner tonight -
I spatchcocked and roasted a chicken. There was a festival of root vegetables to go with the bird - beets, carrots, and potatoes (which I roasted in the juices from the bird, and were wonderful, soft and crunchy at the same time).
Der Brucer was happy with the result.

Good Evening!
Greetings from New York City!
:)
-
My flight did end up boarding around 3:30, and we were in the air by 4:00. -The captain had actually gotten clearance to board earlier, but then that would have meant sitting on the tarmac until the designated take off time. So, when the gate agent made the boarding announcement she informed everyone at the gate why it seemed like they were still holding. She also boarded the plane from the rear to the front - which is something I wish they would do more often - so everyone was on in about 15 minutes, the doors were shut, the plane pulled away from the gate, and we were in the air just a few minutes later.
And I had a nice nap on the flight too. :)

Knowing what a superb judge of character, and talent, you are Ben; I am quite sure that Ant will be snatched up immediately by some very fortunate summer stock company!

Congratulations, Woody, I think this is probably the first time I have ever seen you use the word potato! ;)
-
Glad to see that DRs Ben and Jose are home.
Back to work for me tomorrow, so...goodnight!
-
Oh... I did have a little bit of traffic/cab fare anxiety on my way back from the airport. As soon as we got of LGA, the traffic was at a crawl. Well, the cabbie said it had been slow all day due the game at Yankee Stadium - Was there a game at Yankee Stadium today? - and there were also signs about an accident and lane closures on the Triboro Bridge. Well, we got through the toll plaza, and then ended up zooming the rest of the way to my apartment. Whew! -The trip only took about 10 minutes longer than usual, and the cab fare was only about $1.00 more than what I'm usually used to paying. :)
-
I have decided that the older I get, the tougher these time changes are for me to tolerate. I use to wonder what all the fuss was about switching over to Daylight Savings Time. It never bothered me one way or another. However, these last few years it has been murder on my system.
-
Yes it is. Where was it taken?
The photo was either taken at (gasp!) Starbucks or (most likely) BORDERS. Notice the white chocolate mocha in the foreground. . . .
-
I, and my system, HATE Daylight Savings Time! I want my hour back, and I want it back N-O-W!
-
My goodness, DR td, you look younger every time I see you!
I hate you!
;)
-
I began my evening watching one more episode from the MEDIUM Season 1 set before putting it back on the shelf. This was the one where defense attorney Larry Watt's girl friend committed suicide and it looked like Watt was implicated. I remember being SO SHOCKED at the ending and really impressed at the clever plotting of the mystery.
I even enjoyed it on this revisit.
-
Next, I watched SUPERMAN RETURNS on Blu-ray. The movie itself was not improved on a second viewing. I love some of Bryan Singer's films, but this one is stretched out way too long for the story it's telling. The beat-down of SUperman at one point was almost fetishist in nature and gave me the creeps.
They couldn't have picked a better clone for CHristopher Reeve than Brandon Routh. Some shots they looked like they could have been identical twins.
As far as the Blu-ray, this transfer is one hundred million times superior to that awful hazy, grainy, fuzzy sDVD edition. Though he's color timed the film weirdly to give it some kind of older cast to it and drained some contrast from it, too, it's so much sharper and more watchable now. And the big save-them set pieces all still work just great.
So, I'm not a huge fan of the movie but can now stand watching the good parts occasionally now that I have a copy worth watching.
-
I ended my evening by watching tonight's DIRT. Some fun behind-the-scenes dirt gathering by the cast. I wish they'd bring back Lucy's brother.
And they're going to have to take Don off his meds at some point. The clean and sober (and sane) Don is just not much fun.
-
Welcome back DR Mr Piano.
-
Thank you, Mr. Oz.
-
And on that note - G-flat - I believe I shall get ready for bed. 'Tis been a long day.
Goodnight.
-
I'm heading down, too. No writing to do tonight, so I can get to bed earlier. DST doesn't sit well with my constitution either, so I'm ready to go to sleep.
Good night!
-
Back from the delightful TAKE ME ALONG this afternoon, then dinner with Bill Parry and Maureen Silliman and two friends of theirs, the husband happening to be someone who graduated in my law school graduating class. Very small world.

I really wish I could see Take Me Along.
-
Have finished viewing for the evening.

Wish I'd been taken along. I grew up on a diet of Bob Merrill tunes. They didn't hinder Al Cernik's career.

A lull.

Sending DR Danise some needed vibes for an infection and fever to GET LOST NOW!

ROTFLMAO!
Geesh! Who ever is in charge of that label? ! ? ! ? :o
Hey, I heard a rumor that there might be a new release soon! But then, it could just be a rumor. ;)

Today's rehearsal was almost seven hours long!! Most of us were called at 1:00 pm, but several of the girls (not just the twins) had to be there at noon. We had a costume parade that took almost all of the first three hours. I basically have three costumes. A general guy costume...pants, black shoes and a shirt for the top of the show and the ends of each act. My Dolly Dimples outfit is something else! I'll have to take a picture when it's all finished. It's like a strapless flapper dress with fringe on the bottom that has been turned into a top for me. And yes, I have to shave my upper torso and arms...my chest AND my back!! :P :P :P :P They WON'T let me have some kind of cover for my arms and back. :P I say. The shorts are sweatpants-type shorts with lace added to the bottom. And then I have a pull-over costume for the New Year's Eve party scene in the second act. And that's it. The best part is that I have a lot of time in between each change. :)

Jose, on one of these trips you really must hire Gudda, my Egyptian driver. You won't be sorry.
-
The time change doesn't make much difference to my system, but I do resent losing an hour off my weekend!
-
Rod brought over another shelving unit while I was out running some errands. It's a wonderful unit, but way to big. I have no place that it would fit.
Then, around 9:30 pm he brought me a plate of brownies! What nice neighbors I am losing!
All I can say is that the new neighbors will have big shoes to fill...actually, literally...Rod does wear darn big shoes, I noticed.

My goodness, DR td, you look younger every time I see you!
I hate you!
;)
You should see what's occurring in my attic. . . ;)
-
I gotta tell you.
-
I get such interesting e-mails sometimes.
-
Will we never get to page eleven?
-
I will single-handedly take us to page eleven.
-
People come, people go, like Grand Hotel.
-
Welcome ten GUESTS.
-
Make that thirteen GUESTS. And George, let's not forget George, who's sitting there like so much fish.
-
Guess I'll go write some notes.

Make that thirteen GUESTS. And George, let's not forget George, who's sitting there like so much fish.
I'm here. I watched last week's "Medium" and now I'm watching last week's "Boston Legal."
-
Last Wednesday was my last night off from rehearsal and I won't have another night off until a week from tomorrow!
-
And then we only get two nights off. We perform Wednesday through Sunday with Monday and Tuesday off.
-
I will have a lot of TV watching to keep up with.
-
I still need to get some nylons. ;)
-
Otherwise, the rehearsal today went well. I think that tomorrow, we get the whole band. That's gonna make a big change.
-
And since we're so close...
