Did John Hughes make 10 movies in the '80s?

Anthony will be at Chelsea for a while this morning but not with Jose. He's auditioning for Theatre by the Sea in Rhode Island. Then he will be helping friends of ours who have a theatre in Pennsylvania. They are in New York auditioning for their summer season (unfortunately they have nothing for Anthony in the season) and they have asked him to be the monitor. He did it yesterday and will do it again tomorrow as well.

DR Jose, no, alas, not today! 'm working at home and then I have a chest x-ray at 12:30.

Good morning, all!  I'm starting to feel that the battle with mites and bugs is over, I've got to be vigilant and regular in my attacks on them from now on, but  this is one of  the few bits of positive thoughts I've had in the past week, which has been needlessly fraught and tense.

My next apartment project is to buy a humidifier, which is recommended for keeping the mite population down.

DR tomovoz, I dearly love BREAKING AWAY, whose author, the late Steve Tesich, is the father of my goddaughter Charlotte's friend Amy. Since it was the first movie I saw in Manhattan after moving here in 1979, it will always be a 70s film to me.

And by "Opera" they mean: ???

LONG BEACH PRESS-TELEGRAM (http://www.presstelegram.com/lifestyle/ci_8606436)

Quote
A poetic triumph for York and L.B. Opera

"Enoch Arden," by Richard Strauss to a text by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and "Frankenstein!!" by HK Gruber to a poem by Viennese poet H.C. Artmann, mark the second of four events in LBO's 2008 season and continue the company's tradition of presenting the new and unusual.

The two works, the first a melodrama, the second a "pandemonium," did have one more thing in common: Actor Michael York starred in both.

In "Enoch Arden," Tennyson's poem was recited and acted by York with Strauss' score played by pianist Lisa Sylvester. "Frankenstein!!" was more of an interactive romp, featuring York as both chansonnier and participant, the seven members of the Rogue Artists Ensemble, 11 musicians and Andreas Mitisek, LBO's artistic and general director, conducting.

The 1980s are my least favorite decade for motion picturs...if we include TV movies I would list:

SUMMER GIRL

AN EARLY FROST

but if we are sticking to theatrical motion pictures then I think my list will be:

LISA (1989) starring D.W. Moffett

I can't think of any other 80s movies that I like.

Sort of annoyed that the last new episode of ONE TREE HILL is not on for me. I don't get the WB. And the station i watch it on (sun tv) showed 2 reruns last night but have nothing for the new episode.

He decided, instead, to confront it head on.

His speech in Philadelphia hit the ball squarely out of the park.

"Reasonable" people will be assuaged/convinced - and for the others there is no hope.

DR JMK,

Some preliminary findings.

The only one of my mags that had a review of the Samsung BD-UP5000 had a preproduction model which they did give initial very positive feelings about though there were some problems which Samsung convinced them would be worked out before shipping the finished model.

According to user reviews I've read, some of those caveats have not been fully addressed yet including not being able to decode the latest HD audio formats: Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. True, there could be firmware upgrades that solve these problems, but none are on the horizon as of yet. There were some sound sync issues, too, that some folks had (including the original reviewer).

Nothing whatsoever wrong with the picture quality playing either HD source or regular DVDs, but those glaring audio shortcoming would make me wait for either definite firmware solutions before buying or simply waiting for a later model (if Samsung does a later model).

Well, I thought knowing the abbreviation would help me, but it doesn't. The topic of the day is...this list of movies? Is Tom throwing out all of these to discuss in terms of what ties them all together, or are we to discuss them piecemeal, or what? I am ashamed to say I have only seen Raiders. You need to read bk's daily notes to get the topic of the day always listed in the last paragraph of the daily notes.

From today's BK Column, final paragraph:

Today’s topic of discussion: Name your top ten favorite films of the 80s. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, as I rest the weary bones and head off to the bedroom environment.

List selections can, of course, be discussed.  Unlike other forums where when you make a list you get attacked for your choices, here it's all "informational."  Feel free, however, to ask folks what it is about one or more of their choices that appeals to them if you are curious.

Maybe I am reading the wrong notes. Is that different from the daily column? (Today's daily column is BK's notes, so I assume it is not.) The last paragraph of today's notes is: Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I really must get to bed and rest the weary bones and get my beauty rest, too.

It seems like the actual topic of the day is '80s movies or something similar. I am willing to pay extra for some guidance here.

I. for one, wish candidates would recognize the limitations of power that the President has in many areas - particularly domestic policy. Instead of attempting to craft specific legislation in stump speeches, I would preder to hear:

"I will urge Congress to present me with legislation that will address the future insolvancy of the Social Security Syatem."

"I will urge Congress to present me with legislation that comprises a National Energy Policy which will address both our dependency on foreign resources and our incresed concern for the environment."

"I will urge Congress to present me with legislation that will expand our health care safety net."

I guess that the antibiotics are taking effect, for now I am in pain!
The swelling went up last night, completely closing my right eye.
Of course this was before bedtime, and I did manage to take in GOLDENEYE on dvd before the swelling continued.
Then, in the middle of the night, the pain began.  It's supposedly 'good pain,' meaning that the drugs are doing their work.
The swelling has gone down this morning, especially so after a long, hot, hot shower.
Thank goodness I don't go to any workplace until Thursday morning.

I was wondering the same thing.  Then I read the surgery was last week to remove a growth. ???

Well, I thought knowing the abbreviation would help me, but it doesn't. The topic of the day is...this list of movies? Is Tom throwing out all of these to discuss in terms of what ties them all together, or are we to discuss them piecemeal, or what? I am ashamed to say I have only seen Raiders. Well, I only remember Raiders. I saw Reds when it first came out and was bored by it.
Bretty, when you log onto the site, you're "supposed" to read BK's notes for the day first.  That lets us all in on what is goiing on in his life (which can be plenty), and generally gives a reason, or at least an excuse, for the TOD.  The TOD itself is chosen by our esteemed BK, except for Thursdays, which is "Ask BK Day," when we DRs ask BK (and each other) a question, and Sundays, which is sort of a free for all day.

If you are having trouble finding BK's Notes, go to the upper part of this screen, find where it says "Today's Column" right under the main logo, and click.

Wiggles is becoming more and more a part of the family.

It's taken a few days, but he now realizes that he's allowed to be on the couch.  This is particularly nice, because he gets to cuddle next to der Brucer.

Then Fletcher decided that he, too, wanted to be on the couch, at the end opposite der B.  Wiggles watched very carefully as Fletcher carefully positioned himself at his end, not very sure if he was supposed to make way for the giant spotted thing.

Fletcher and Wiggles are now sharing the couch, butt to butt.

*happy sigh*

That's probably not what he means by "move quickly," but it has a certain aesthetic to it.

Still a chipmunk, though.   ;D
One of the main characters in Enchanted (due out today on DVD) is a chipmunk.

I'll be thinking of you!

To be more precise, "td" and a few others are always willing to oblige.

Nothing personal, BrettySpaghetti, but the few who are gushing are doing so on their own recognizance and not representing the rest of us who can contain/comport ourselves without drooling.

I began my afternoon of viewing with last night's OLD CHRISTINE. I found this one very funny and enjoyed it thoroughly. Dave Foley was the guest, and he should come back as he and Julia-Louis make a good comedy couple. He did well playing gay on WILL & GRACE for a handful of episodes, too (when they wrote him a decent episode). Just a good, all-purpose comedy actor.

Next came today's review disc - MANDA BALA (SEND A BULLET). What a shocking documentary about the depth of kidnapping in Sao Paulo, Brazil. I had NO idea this kind of thing was going on. As in all good documentaries, eye opening information about the extent of corruption throughout Brazil. So sad.

To my list:

Cinema Paradiso (we did not see it in Oz until 1990)
Grave Of The Fireflies (as with Castle In The Sky,  seen much later than it's 1980's original Japanese release).

TOD (more limited than der B's, who seems to not know how to count to ten...):

Series Segments:

Licence to Kill
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn
Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back

Non-Series Films:

Field of Dreams
The Little Mermaid
The Right Stuff
Victor Victoria
Who Framed Roger Rabbit

and Amadeus, but I have to confess I did not see Amadeus until we bought the LaserDisc.  That's right, I never saw it in the theater.  So, while it is a film released in the '80s, it is not part of my own '80s experience.   :-\

And it was somewhere in here that der Brucer and I finally met, and our film experiences start to mesh.

Seeing documentaries like this make one all the more grateful that we live here relatively safe and secure in our homes and cars. There the kidnapping is so rampant that it's given rise to cottage industries such as bulletproof cars, academies for defensive driving, helicopter services which can keep the rich above the lawlessness on the streets, and plastic surgeons who have perfected ways to reconstruct new ears (the most commonly used body part sent to the families of victims).

All of this is also reflected in the ruthlessness of the politicians who steal millions from the country and under Brazillian law can't be prosecuted in civil court because of their "service" to the country, and how these people launder their money through these thriving frog farms.

Lots of information, kind of haphazardly connected and linked, but still eye-opening.
Title: Re:THE WEARY BONES
Post by: Matt H. on March 18, 2008, 01:28:20 PM
There were only two bonus on the disc: seven deleted scenes (including the complete sequence of an operation to replace the cut-off ear of a victim by using rib cartilege) and a fleet of helicopters that remind one of the Wagner sequence in APOCALYPSE NOW.

Also a chatty though haphazard (like their film) audio commentary by the young director and two of his producers.

Doublechecking because of Matt's mention of Apocalypse Now - it's from 1979, not in TOD territory - I stumbled across this over at IMBD:

Apocalypse Pooh (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0201428/maindetails)

Taking dialogue from the movie, and matching it with visuals from the Pooh cartoons?  Martin Sheen as Pooh?  Dennis Hopper as Piglet?  Robert Duvall as Gopher?  Ralph Wright as Eeyore/Col. Kurtz?

Oh bother, indeed!

Matthew, this is from a site on British slang:

Cor - You'll often hear a Brit say "cor"! It is another one of those expressions of surprise that we seem to have so many of. It will sometimes be lengthened to "cor blimey" or "cor love a duck", depending on where you are. "Cor blimey" is a variation of "Gawd Blimey" or "Gor Blimey". They are all a corruption of the oath "God Blind Me

So, if I read this correctly, everytime I use the word "Blimey", I am asking God to blind me?

That is what I have been doing wrong!  All this time I have been asking BK questions on Wednesday, and now I find out that Ask BK Day is Thursday!

I don't know Evening Primrose. I know it was a TV production, but nothing else. I run hot and cold with Sondheim. I have loved Sweeney Todd for eons, all but wearing out the LPs of the OCR I had in college. "Not a Day Goes By" from Merrily We Roll Along and "What Can You Lose?" from Dick Tracy are huge favorites of mine. Sunday in the Park is so innovative and interesting. Anyone Can Whistle and Company have some amazing material, but also some songs I feel are mediocre. And although theater people love it, I always thought Follies was a boring monstrosity. Sacrilege, I know. Into the Woods was a letdown too (am I the only person who thought "No One is Alone" was a ripoff of "The Candy Man"?). Someday I hope to find time to drill Bounce into my brain, but I figure it's probably his last full score, and I guess I've been saving it.

Unsung Sondheim is one of my favorite CDs, and I do genuinely look forward to hearing Primrose.

Good Afternoon!

Lunch!

-And, hopefully, some macarons from the newly relocated Madeleine Patisserie - if it indeed has relocated.

Good news, indeed!

After thoroughly enjoying my Shackburger Single and Black & White Milkshake from Shake Shack (http://shakeshacknyc.com/) under the portable heaters in Madison Square Park, I took a walk down 23rd Street where I was very happy to see that Madeleine Patisserie had indeed reopened two doors down from it's original location.  In fact, today was just their second day of business in their new location.

I didn't ask "What took you so long?", but I could tell that the owners had hoped to be open sooner, and they're basically only "half open" - the soon-to-be unveiled seating area is currently behind a construction "curtain".  However, I did say, "It's nice to have you back."

Alas, there were no macarons for sale today.  I'm guessing they're still getting the kitchen area in order too.  However, they did have croissants, pastries, madeleines, and some fruit tarts for sale.  "Maria" told me that they should be selling macarons by next week.  -And since I'll be working down in Chelsea again next week, I'm sure I'll be stopping by to check on their progress. ;)

Oh... Today's sampling and selection consisted of three madeleines: Chocolate, Espresso Walnut and Rose.  All three were tres delicieux - the Rose one felt like I was tasting Spring, literally.  And one the way home, I stopped by again for some sustenance for my subway ride home: a coconut meringue, and two small chocolate chip financiers.  :)

All of this is also reflected in the ruthlessness of the politicians who steal millions from the country and under Brazillian law can't be prosecuted in civil court because of their "service" to the country, and how these people launder their money through these thriving frog farms.

That reminds me of a friends recent trip to Peru to check out Machu Picchu.  He had gone there a few times when he was younger.  Back then, the most expensive part of the trip was the plane ticket to Peru.  The train to the top of the mountain cost a $1.00, there was no admission to the ruins, and the bare bones hotel was $25.00/night.  However, a few years ago, the upkeep of the ruins was sold to private companies.  Additionally, the hotels and other tourist businesses (souvenirs) were also sold to private concerns (mainly international companies).  The government made millions on the sale, however, the ruins have continued to degrade, and any maintenance is being sloppily done.  He showed me a picture of part of a wall that was patched up with what looked like bits of modeling clay.  And the prices for the one(!) railroad that goes up to the mountain and the one hotel on top of the mountain have increased astronomically with no real increase in "niceness" or amenities.  The locals are now required to pay the train fare now to the ruins too.

To put it into perspective - well, into numbers - for my friends most recent trip to Machu Picchu - the cost of the train ride and the hotel - was the same as the cost of his plane ticket.  -And plane tickets to Peru ain't cheap!

Grammercy Tavern
Tabla

Jazz Standard
The Modern
Cafe 2
and Terrace 5.
A report on the quality of these establishments would be appreciated, of course.)

Well... Here's my quick assessment...

(on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best)

Union Square Cafe - 9 - The bar area - which does not require reservations is actually sort of a bargain, especially considering the quality of the food.  But the main room is a worthy and justifiable splurge.

Gramercy Tavern (not Grammercy ;)) - 9 - Yes, the prixe fixe menu is worth the splurge(!), but like Union Square Cafe, the "tavern" is a great way to try some of the greenmarket-driven creations at a much lower tab without a months wait for a reservation.

Tabla - 8 - I've found the cooking here to be sort of inconsistent.  I actually prefer to eat in the less formal and less expensive Bread Bar downstairs.  I also have an issue paying high prices for Indian food, in general.

Blue Smoke - 8 - Very good BBQ in Gramercy  -Although, after trying the nearby Hill Country recently, well... ;)  -However, unlike most of the other Danny Meyer establishments, it's informal and relatively inexpensive throughout.  -However, "relatively inexpensively" doesn't mean cheap.

Jazz Standard - This is the jazz club in the basement of Blue Smoke, and features the same menu.  However, what's great about Jazz Standard is that there is no food and drink minimum to enjoy the pretty amazing line-up of jazzers, and the cover charges are quite reasonable too for the talent they bring in ($15-30).

The Modern - N.D.T.Y. (Not Dined There Yet) ;)  However, I have dined at Cafe 2 and Terrace 5 which are the less formal dining establishments in the Museum of Modern Art.

Cafe 2 - 6 - The food is very good, but I wish the prices were a dollar or two cheaper - I've seen families run up quite the tab trying to feed everyone.  It's all served cafeteria style, but not at your typical cafeteria speed of service.  A lot of items are ordered at the main counter and then brought to your table.  I also just find the Italian/Mediterranean menu sort of at odds with MoMA's aesthetic.

Terrace 5 - 7 - There's nothing like securing one of the outdoor tables overlooking the sculpture garden while enjoying a beautifully composed salad of roasted vegetables and greens, a perfectly prepared chicken paillard, the house-made chocolates served in a MoMA-inspired box, a perfectly frothed hot chocolate served with a trio of homemade marshmallows, and/or a nice glass of wine.  :)

Let's face it, Evening Primrose didn't make much of a stir when it first appeared on ABC's Studio 67.

It wasn't until three years later that Sondheim himself finally broke through and caught the public's attention with Company, immediately followed by Follies and A Little Night Music.  Yes, he'd been part of WSS, Gypsy, and Forum, plus Do I Hear a Waltz and Anyone Can Whistle, but it was those three back-to-back productions he did with Hal Prince that put him on the general radar.

My own first encounter with any of the EP music came with the release of the 1973 Sondheim Tribute concert cast recording, aka the Scrabble album.  I have loved the song "I Remember" ever since, "Take Me To the World" a little less so.  And the score has been a cult item ever since, even with three complete renditions of the songs (that I know of) bringing it to more and more mainstream exposure.

That our BK has been able to get the rights to release the original television recording, with incidental music included, is just one more reason I refer to him as "the esteemed" BK.  Kudos.

And I only kiss ass when I really mean it.

As a matter of fact, I do!  I have the tickets already and they're here at work so I don't forget to go. ;) They are doing:

Three Penny Opera
Scrooge (yet again!)
A Grand Night for Singing
Jesus Christ Superstar
A Little Night Music

Working Shop-ette's at the moment, then a run-through.

Is this you?

Yup.  My moment in this scene (the "Freak Show") takes all of probably 20 seconds and I'm practically running down stage then off.  So the expression is just one exceedingly quick moment where I'm in the middle of speaking some word. ::)

Just came home from an evening of song and merriment and saw DR Arnold Brockman which was a nice surprise as he normally attends the Monday night performances.

Christine Pedi who was wonderful and is nice to hear her sing in her "real" voice and not as Liza or Ethel or Carol or Julie or Mary or Eartha or Barbra or Judy.

John Treacy Egan late of the Producers and currently in The Little Mermaid was also there.

Did she perform her new-ish Sheldon Harnick act?

I began my evening with another NUMB3RS episode. This was one dealing with an art masterpiece stolen from a museum. Pretty fair mystery, but there was Judd Hirsch two years since I last saw him, lecturing the boys again on the importance of getting married and having families. This is what drove me away from the show two years ago, and it may indeed make me put this set back on the shelf.

Nice seeing Garrett Dillahunt and Benito Martinez in guest star roles.

Next, I watched another DVD I got for Christmas - I'LL CRY TOMORROW. Susan Hayward reached new heights of performance in this film, and watching her hit bottom and then dry out are harrowing.

Yes.I did see our DR Michael Shayne at The Crest Theatre Tonight. I didn;t realize he had changed his series from Monday to Tuesday. I had to change to Tuesday for the Treacy Egan and Pedi performance because  The Polo Club had Tony Orlando Monday Night(By the way he was terrific) Michael S looks to be in "Tip-Top " Shape.

Yes,Uncle Jo Jo Christine did sing some songs by Sheldon Harnick.

About tonight's AMERICAN IDOL, another Beatles night.

Too bad they can only send one home. I would send at least five home:

Amanda Overmeyer - back to her sub-level awful yowling that passes as singing.

Kristie Lee Smith - off key much of the time and again, no poise, no personality, voice quavery even late.

Chikisie - like Amanda, back to that awful off pitch singing style from the first weeks.

Brooke White - dull with a capital "d." Even she knew it was a bad night for her.

Ramiele - the producers chose HER to end the evening? Pathetic. Ghastly off key singing.

As for the best:

David Archuleta by a mile, a great recovery from his stumbling performance last week.

Carly Smithson, his only competition of the night and one of the few times since the season started that I didn't think she was the best one.

David Cook - two really good rock performances in a row. Would like to see something else just for a change, but in this style, he can do well.

Sad to report that Ivan Dixon passed away Sunday in Charlotte, N.C of complications from kidney failure....he was one of the few things I liked about HOGAN'S HEROS. I wish I had gotten around to interviewing him  :-\

I must admit i really love the women. Usually i prefer the guys (cause i seem to love more of the female pros). But i was really impressed with much of what i saw.

There were 4 performances that really stood out to me.

1.I had a feel that Kristi Yamaguchi (sp?) would be great. Even though figure skating is different. I thought her athletic nature, plus her competitiveness would help. Plus the grace from skating. And i was right. She was the best of the night. I really liked her.

2. I loved Marissa jaret winokur. She obviously loves the show and loves performing. And i thought it was nice that she got a standing ovation. She had such energy. And i voted for her to support a broadway performer on the show!

3. Priscilla Presley. I was actually impressed with her. She did much better than i expected. I'm not sure how old she is (early 60s?). They said she was the oldest woman ever. Anyhow she is a perfectionist. But has a lot of natural talent.

4. Marlee Matlin. Very moving. The judges were very moved too. She did great!

Monica seles is quite hopeless. She is too stiff. Maybe she can improve a bit. I fear she will be the woman booted.

I would agree on some of these. I do not like amanda at all. Or kristy. And i'm not too fond of chikizie. Remiele i think has a nice voice but not great stage presence.

But i will disagree about brooke white. I just find her lovely on stage. She has wonderful stage presence. And she feels so much emotion. Plus she has a lovely personality. I just like watching her and listening to her. I'm not saying she was great tonight. But i like the way she handles herself.

I think lilttle david did well. Carly is good as always. But i am no longer wowed by her. She has experience. But i just don't find myself interested.

I loved avid cook the last two weeks but was not crazy about him tonight.

I think kristy could go. Or remi. I think michael johns is running out chances. He did so great in hollywood. I just don't get what has happened to him.

I've just stuffed the taters into the oven to bake, and am going to run and hide in the back room to speed through Enchanted for the songs and the bonus features.

I was disappointed not to find the one Stephen Schwartz song that was cut from the movie, the title song that Idinia Menzel was supposed to have sung. I assume they decided to hold it back for the inevitable 2-DVD version to make all of the fans re-buy the same product...

I, too, am a bit confused by the quoting, as well as the post-script nature of your(?) comments.

The quoting is to set off words for particular emphasis (sometimes called Apologetic Quotation Marks) - if I were speaking my vocal inflection would convey the intent.

The post scripts are just that - after-thoughts on what I had written. The ones in question were just my idealizing what I would like to hear a candidate say

Simple returns, of course, but it still felt like a nice accomplishment for the after-midnight hours.  :)
