Well, you've read the notes, the notes were hard-boiled and gaily-colored, and now it is time for you to post until the hard-boiled cows come home.

And I am the first poster???

Odd very odd.

Going to the car show today.

Also watched Fellini's Intervista last night. Not as good as I remember it.

Also Fellini's 8 1/2. Interesting to compare it to 9

I don't know that I've ever seen a Fellini film.

Nope.  Just checked on IMDB, and I have never seen any of Fellini's films.

Makes it hard to choose a favorite.

On the other hand, I notice that Nine is in pre-production, with Rob Marshall directing and Javier Bardem playing Guido.

I sure hope Marshall lets Bardem wear a better haircut than the Coen brothers did.

I've got work to get to.

And a venison roast to tackle after that, which means planning all the go-withs and whatnot while I'm at the store.

I'll try to catch up on yesterday and earlier later.

Easter morning greetings!  Today is a family day - church in Cincinnati with Richard and Rob and Mary Linda, pick up my mom on the way home, and dinner together later this afternoon.  We'll be joined for dinner by Richard's younger brother and his wife - we haven't seen them since Thanksgiving.

Last night we watched No Country for Old Men, which I found very grim, so then we watched Easter Parade to cheer me up.  Between movies, I made deviled eggs (we skipped the coloring this year) and set the Easter table.

Good morning, all!  I will setting out for Toyland shortly, and I plan to spend a lot of the day there working on various and sundry projects.

Last night I finished watching Middleton's THE CHANGELING, which petered out: the lunatic subplot was never integrated into the main story, which continued to be a doozy: Beatrice-Joanna, about to marry the man she loves, finds she's pregnant by the killer she hired and her sexual blackmailer. So, she bribes her virginal maid to sneak into the bridal chamber and have sex with her new husband.  Then she and the killer start a fire in the maid's room and in the evacuation kill the maid so no one will ever know of the plot.  The groom's servant has been flirting with the maid and he's aware of the affair between Beatrice-Joanna and the killer, so he tells the groom.  The killers both end up dead. No one lives happily ever after.

Then I watched the bonus features on the new ENCHANTED disc, and this led to my watching the entire movie again.  DR FJL, there are two cut scenes that provide more info on the attitude of the Idina Menzel character before the elopement, both of which should maybe have been retained for those of you discontented with that plot development. I still think Amy Adams deserved an Oscar nomination, but I guess the committee thinks being funny is easy and only scenery chewers deserve a nomination these days.

I, for one, liked GONE BABY GONE; I'm not sure I'd want to see it again, but it interested me enough to pick up a couple of the Dennis Lehane mysteries besides MYSTIC RIVER.

Hmmmm.....more interesting posts last night.  Looking forward to the photos from DR JOSE's adventure last night.

HHW - the Eclectic bunch.  DR MICHAEL S is going to the car show today and DR GEORGE is going to see Mamma Mia!

I still love THE ROOKIES and may have to buy the box set described by Mr BK.

Vibes of all kinds for the coming week for MR BK.

Happy Easter to one and all and also all and one.

I have the weekend from nonstop hell, with a late gig Friday, voice students yesterday day, another gig last night, and now am up at the veritable crack to go play two very large and music-filled services, where I will be directing various choirs, bell choirs, brass ensembles and the like.

I plan on coming home to a nice, comfy nervous breakdown circa 1 p.m.

Good morning and a Happy Easter to all who participate!

It's going to be a beautiful Easter here with lots of sunshine but moderately chilly temperatures (highs in the 50s). I have lots to do inside today, so I won't be in the chill.

I, too, enjoyed GONE BABY GONE. Great? No. (The mystery element was easily solved long before the revelation.) But it held my attention, and I got quite involved with the conundrum at the end. I had NO trouble understanding Casey Affleck and found the direction effective. So, different strokes.

As for Amy Ryan's Oscar nomination, it's a showy character and that kind of performance often gets attention, but I'd have nominated Amy Madigan instead. Her character had more of an emotional connection with me and showed more depth, I thought.

Skip had a lovely lovely time working with Ed Harris and Amy Madigan [mentioned in BK's notes] in winter 2005 (when they performed a one-act musical Skip wrote with Eduardo Machado).  They are the nicest people; i got to meet them at the after-party, and they even stepped out of the party for a while to meet Toby and Dylan.

Yep. If you'll notice all of the holiday films from 2007 (I AM LEGEND, ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS, SWEENEY TODD, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, THERE WILL BE BLOOD) are getting released now or in the next couple of weeks.

I guess those fans of the show JERICHO already saw the announcement, but if not, CBS has canceled the show. The episode on Tuesday night will be the series finale, not just the season finale.

However, the producers are checking in to see if some other cable channel (Sci-Fi, for example) might want to pick it up for an additional season of episodes.

And as for last night's festivities...

Here I am with the wonderful Michelle Brourman.  We only met each a few summers ago when I was called up to New York Stage & Film to assist with the rehearsals for their still-in-development musical, Dangerous Beauty.  -It will be getting a full production this summer in Chicago at Northwestern University.  Michelle became fast friends and colleagues; we both seem to have the same musical sensibilities and outlook.  We've kept in touch sporadically since then, but last night was the first time we had seen each other since that summer, and even though we had missed each other in the interim, it truly was like we no time had passed at all too.

*Last night was also the first time I heard Michelle play something other than her "Renaissance Music" - a.k.a. the songs from Dangerous Beauty - and I was sort of surprised at how well she swung - pretty decent jazz chops.  -And her arrangement of Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin" was a stunner.  I may have to steal it!

Title: Re:THE HARD-BOILED EGG
Post by: JoseSPiano on March 23, 2008, 08:56:56 AM
And here I am with the equally wonderful Amanda McBroom.  The first time I had heard her sing live was when Jacques Brel and Lies & Legends were running in repertory at the Pasadena Playhouse... almost 20(!) years ago.  I was out there for a week or two visiting a friend, and he just happened to have tickets...  And last night was just the second time I had heard Amanda sing live.  Hopefully, it will be not be another 20 years till the next time.

I've always admired Amanda's voice on record, but what really caught my eye - and brain - last night was her acting.  She truly inhabited each song she sang from the fluffy "I Want To Be Round" (an ode to good eating ;-)) to the tragedy of Brel's "Marieke".  And she scaled it all down perfectly to the size of the room.

Amanda's husband, George Ball - who was also in Brel and Lies in Pasadena - was also in attendance last night.  Alas, no photos of the very happy and talented couple.

And now, with an assist from David Zippel, here are the three us together.  -And if you're wondering - or just being snarky ;-) - Yes, I did have a cocktail - just one! - with my Coconut Pineapple Cake (they only serve desserts at The Metropolitan Room).  However, I also found myself tearing up a few times throughout the evening... Especially after Amanda's introduction to "The Rose...

She dedicated it to a group of "boys and girls" who are currently somewhere in the hills of Afghanistan.  There happen to be a small group of cabaret fans over there, and they've been corresponding with Amanda via e-mail for the past couple of months - whenever they have enough "free time" to do so, and when they're out of immediate danger.  During one of their latest communiques, they sent her a picture of a desert flower, a desert rose they came across while traversing the dusty, hot terrain... It was truly a powerful moment and rendition.

I think that GONE, BABY, GONE was a terrific picture and that Amy Ryan should have won the Oscar.

Yes, some of the dialogue was muffled, which is a shame, but I find that in a lot of movies these days.

On the other hand:

Last night, I finally saw JUNO and, although it was mildly entertaining and Ellen Page is quite good, I do not think it was worthy of all the raves it has received.  It is definitely no LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE.

I think that LARS AND THE REAL GIRL, BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD and even GONE, BABY, GONE were more worthy of a Best Picture Oscar nomination.

And, the Best Original Screenplay statuette SHOULD have gone to MICHAEL CLAYTON.

I always smile when I hear Seattle calling itself The Emerald City.  For most of my life, Seattle was called the Queen City.

Of course, in recent years Tacoma has started calling itself America's #1 Wired City.  It is a name that has never caught on with the populace (think, Avenue of the Americas).  Instead, most of us still call Tacoma, The City of Destiny.

Now to watch another Bollywood movie.

Today it will be MAMTA (1966). It is a family drama about a mother and her kids, I think.

The DVD was on sale at Indiaweekly.com for just 39 cents. I have no doubt it will be worth every penny.

JOHN ADAMS (Episode 3) tonight. Looking forward to it. Glad HBO is only going to run these once a week, however. Two in a row was a little much last Sunday.

Oh ! I'm very jealous. I adore both of them....oh I really like Ed Harris and Amy Madigan too  ;)

I spent most of the afternoon with THERE WILL BE BLOOD. An interesting character study, not nearly as violent as I thought it would be (the R rating said "for some violence" so I should have taken a clue from that). Could have been shorter, I think, but it was reasonably entertaining.

Daniel Day-Lewis is commanding, but honestly, I thought he was channeling John Huston's speech patterns throughout the entire movie. No, I wouldn't have given him the Best Actor Oscar for this (I certainly would for some previous performances that he lost for - IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, for one - , but not for this.)

This morning we performed the world premiere of a new work for choir, organ, brass quartet, and timpani.  It was pretty exciting music, and the composer was in attendance.  It was very well received.

Since no one volunteered their prize-winning salad dressing recipe the other day, I did a Google seach on "best salad dressing ever," found a recipe, made it, and brought it to the gathering.  That was a big hit as well!  :)

A couple of days ago, DR Jose reported (re: his dinner at Tribeca Grill):

Quote
...I had the Maytag Bleu Cheese & Endive Salad to start off with...

A correction, quoting from The Food Snob's Dictionary, by David Kamp:

Quote
Maytag Blue Cheese: Old School American Artisinal cheese, produced in Iowa since 1941 by the same Maytags whose patriarch, F.L., started the appliance company of the same name.  Way ahead of the curve, F.L.'s grandson, Fred II, who ran a dairy farm on the side, determined that the milk from his Holsteins could produce a veined, stinky cheese every bit as good as France's and that the word bleu could therefor be authoritatively replaced by the word blue.  Packaged attractively in blue-accented foil wrappers, Maytag's small-batch cheeses are a popular name-drop on New American menus.

Double-checking at the Tribeca Grill menu site (http://www.myriadrestaurantgroup.com/tribecagrill/dinner.html), they do indeed spell it as Maytag Blue.

A side note:  Fred II's son, Fred III (aka Fritz), is the fellow that took the Anchor Brewing Company (http://www.anchorbrewing.com/), makers of Anchor Steam Beer, and turned it into one of the leading microbreweries in the nation.

So now we know what the Maytag Repairman does with all his spare time!

(The underlining is mine, btw.)

DR SWW - "Blue" or "Bleu" - it's still mold.  ;)

And, yes, I already knew that the Blue Cheese had it's origins with the appliance family.

However, "are a popular name-drop on New American menues"... Hmm... It's actually called "Maytag Blue Cheese", so it's not really a "name drop", especially since it really is different from other blue or bleu cheeses.  Plus, it's been featured on menus that way for years.

Jose:

You may have missed the source I was quoting, The Food Snob's Dictionary, by David Kamp.  While highly accurate in it's information, Kamp is also having fun skewering the "foodie" cult and all of their pretentions.  The insistance that the source of the parts of the dish served be listed on the menu is what is referred to as the "name drop," something that menu writers love to do because it makes everything sound that much more precious and therefor more expensive.  I suppose we've got Alice Waters to blame for this, but when she started doing it, it was something that no one was doing.  But that was years ago, back in '71.

The Tribeca menu is surprisingly light on this kind of pretension, but when and where it is found elsewhere, it can usually and rightly be called "trendy."

Dinner is roasting in the oven: a venison roast, resting on a bed of beet greens and barded with particularly streaky bacon.

This will be accompanied by roasted beets (from which the greens grew) and oatmeal, which will be loaded up with apples and craisins.  A mushroom gravy will finish the plating.

Reminds me of a couple of casinos I've seen.

I wonder what the carpeting looks like.

Sorry, Woody, most of the interior photos I found had marble floors, instead of carpet.  However, I did find this bedroom photo.  Eat your heart out, Laura!

Back from the production meeting, then another great meal at Michael's Bar and Grill - I went back to the fried catfish, which was faboo and a half.

I am watching John Adams. I am seriously thinking about adding HBO back to my package so I can watch the rest of this series.

I found tonight's "John Adams" episode quite interesting and moving since I know nothing of the Adams family's travails after the events of the Declaration of Independence.  Most interesting.

I thought so, too.  DR Elmore.  I know a little about him and of course both he and his son went on to be President of the United States, but I didn't know much of what was in the episode tonight and don't want to miss the rest

I caught the last 40 minutes on PBS of the glorious adaptation of Jane Austen's EMMA with Kate Beckinsale, Prunella Scles, and Mark Strong, who's the gangster boyfriend/keeper of Delysia LaFosse in MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY. I had forgotten that in the final scene the band plays the Irish jig that Bernstein turned into "My Darlin' Eileen" for WONDERFUL TOWN.

And so, to bed.

Well, the frenzying is going to have to take place without me.  I've had a long, rough week, and my depression is catching up with me.  Time for me to take advantage of having tomorrow off, and sign off.

The venison, btw, turned out very nicely.

And Iron Chef America was fun, too, with both chefs having time battles towards the end.

Well the frozen turkey turned out fine. Although i can't really say that i made it. My mom ending up doing everything.

It is a great concept though (cooking from frozen).

Tonight i watched BIG BROTHER. But now i think i will go watch tomorrow' MEDIUM (on tonight in canada for some reason). I guess with DANCING WITH THE STARS and IDOL that channel is full!

Tomorrow's MEDIUM is the first of another two-parter. I'd prefer not to have any more of those, but no one asked me.

I began my evening by watching the bonus material on the second disc in the THERE WILL BE BLOOD set. Not much there actually, less than an hour's worth of material all told.

There were a couple of deleted scenes, one outtake, a 15 minute montage of the still photographs, newsreels, and films that gave Paul Thomas Anderson the look and feel for the movie prior to filming, two trailers, and a 26 minute silent movie (with a new score) called "The Story of Petroleum," made in 1927 which is when the events of the film conclude.

Next, I watched ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE on HD-DVD. Not a great reenactment of the Mary Queen of Scots story/Spanish Armada defeat. I thought the Mary section was hopelessly muddled. None of the conspirators were given their names (no Babbington, no Ballard, for example) so unless one knew the history beforehand, it was a guessing game knowing who was doing what to whom.

I did like Clive Owen as Walter Raleigh, but he could do this part standing on his head. It didn't take a great performance from him. I was surprised to see in the credits that it was Samantha Morton as Mary. I wouldn't have recognized her at all. As usual, I loved Tom Hollander as Mary's "jailer."

Since the "making of" documentary was only 9 minutes long, I watched that, too. They all rave about how Cate Blanchett is the definitive Elizabeth, but I don't think so at all. I still think Glenda Jackson's triumph in those six parts of ELIZABETH R are without equal (and worthy of the two Emmys she won for it).

And then I finished the evening watching JOHN ADAMS which I had recorded. I agree with DRs Elmore and Cilla: I enjoyed it too since this part of the story is new to me. And the previews for next week look equally intriguing.

Good Evening!

I just double-checked my iCalendar for this week's schedule.  I already knew that I'd be working/playing from basically 10-5 each day this week - WOW!  Just like regular people! ;) - however, over the course of the next five days, I'll be at four different venues, so...  Just had to make sure I've implanted tomorrow's location now so that I don't end up staying on the A train an extra stop or two... which has happened once or twice before.  !SPOO  ;)

Exciting, huh?  ;)

*At least it's a post.

I think MEDIUM is one of the unsung dramas on TV currently. If you buy into the premise, the stories are consistently engaging, sometimes downright scary and/or troubling, and almost always satisfying. The portryal of the family dynamic on this show is the best on TV: these people look like they could actually BE a real family.

I'm not sure I've read whether NBC has picked it up for another season yet, but I'd be shocked if it got canceled.

Watched three more Rookies episodes, which I'm enjoying very much.  I must say, this Leonard Horn director was very good.  The worst is Earl Bellamy.  Also, by episode seven, Elmer was gone, so far replaced by Allyn Ferguson and Jack Elliott, and Pete Rugolo.

I would love to see this.  Last year, my friend Josh was going to direct O'Casey's play, "Juno and the Paycock," but it didn't work out.  I was going to play Juno's husband...the paycock. :)

Today, I went to Seattle and saw Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell...umm...Carmelina...I mean Mamma Mia! this afternoon. ;)

The audience loved it.  I liked it a lot.  I didn't totally "love" it, but thought it was very good.  All the actors/singers/dancers were very good (lots of eye candy...male and female! :D).

At the end of the show after the bows, one of the actors spoke to the audience about the Broadway Cares fundraiser happening.  They had actors with buckets to take donations from the audience as they left the theater.  They also had show posters autographed by the entire cast for only $40.  I got one of those and my sister got a Mamma Mia apron for $20.
