Title: THE THREE Rs
Post by: bk on February 06, 2004, 12:03:44 AM
Well, you've read 'em, you've divined their meaning and now it's time for you to take the notes you've read and enlarge upon them and post until the cows come home.  To it, I say.

Oh dear....it must be a different Godzilla/Mothra/King Ghidrah movie....because the one I saw definitely had singing Peanuts....I think it also had something about "the World" in the title....watch for that one, MR BK.

In my CD player:  Company OBC - still a favorite!  8)

DVD player - The Ten Commandments - after I watched DeMille's "Madam Satan" I wanted to see another spectacle!  ;D

VHS - Preminger's "Saint Joan" - very interesting.  And I liked Jean Seberg a LOT!  :)

And I thought I would add a picture of Chris Meloni, just because I found one.  ;D

In response to all the brouhaha Bush is pushing about marriage being sacred, only for a man and a woman, etc.:

Same sex marriages don't produce children - ie: future soldiers.

And no, I'm not kidding.  The Roman emperor Augustus (the first emperor after Rome's ill-fated tenure as a republic) made all sorts of laws that emphasized "the good Roman family" in order to ensure that lots and lots of tiny Romans would be born, and grow up to continue Rome's conquest of the world.  Men who remained bachelors were fined and denied honors.  Women who bore three or more children (ensuring population growth) ensured enormous tax breaks for their families.

The difference is that in ancient Rome, Augustus actually stated his intentions outright: Rome needs lots and lots more soldiers to remain great!  Now there's more subterfuge.  But it's the same old strategy.

I decided I should leave the bedroom & let Keith try to sleep.  I woke up with a coughing attack before 4:00.

SW you remind of the why I NEVER WANT TO MOVE AGAIN!   I hope the broken furniture can be mended.

Lulu-very interesting.  You mean I don’t have my priorities straight?  And I thought we need to worry about over population & the environment-silly me.

I just drank some hot water (way to early for my stomach to tolerate tea) & think I might be able to return to bed without coughing.

Nothing in the work CD player yet. Not sure what I'll listen to this morning. I'm feeling somewhat political so perhaps a dose of Romanovsky and Phillips for the morning.

Like last week, in the VCR is last night's showing of Two's Company, the 1975 Elaine Stritch Britcom, episode 4.

More later.

Interesting choice, Ben.  In my tape player is one of my strange compilation tapes-- Romanovsky and Phillips,  Paul Whiteman and Ricky Nelson.  I figured out that I must have  dubbed off several things I had on cassette onto one. At least I think that is how that tape happened.

In the CD player,  The Best of Jeri Southern.

In the VCR:   the Hallmark movie with Angela Lansbury that I recorded but have not watched.

DVD:  Still alternating between episodes of the 4th season of the "Spopranos" and the first season of "Soap"

Here is Echo, Keith is really up now.   :) Bye.

FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS WEEK, NO BROADWAY CLOSINGS WERE ANNOUNCED TODAY!

I remember Christopher Meloni from a short-run ABC series called "Leaving LA".  What has he done since?

CD - The Original London Cast of the 1950 musical "Love From Judy" from the original 78s.  This is the first CD I've seen with 6 regular tracks and 18 bonus tracks of other songs by the cast from other sources.

DVD - We'll be watching "The Beatles on Ed Sullivan" this week end which also features several numbers from the OBC of OLIVER!

VHS - Nothing

Casettes - A new collection of 40 episodes of "The Jack Benny Program" from his very first show up til the end of its long radio run

For those who missed my announcement last night, the Spring Musicals in Mufti season at the York will be BEST FOOT FORWARD, FANNY & WEIRD ROMANCE followed by their last regular show of the season - A revue based on the works of Kenward Elmslie.

Good morning all. I am so happy.  Bravo Canada is starting to air the last group of Sex & The City episodes tonight. That means we're only maybe a month behind (not sure how many of the last episodes have aired on HBO).  Usually they keep us like 3 months behind. So yeah!

Media watch - Nada. (I'm supposed to be concentrating on my work.)

Question: What ticks you off at the supermarket? Here's my current peeve.

Yesterday I was at the upscale Whole Foods. Whenever I'm in the area I'm drawn to WF for its outrageously priced but delicious pecan and raisin bread. The bread section has now moved to a high-traffic and unsupervised area of the store, where folks brush their coats and tushies along the half-exposed loaves as they walk by or bend over.

(I left a comment in the suggestion box. And I did not get any bread.)

DR DinTo - there are so MANY things that I hate about going to the supermarket that I go on Saturday morning at 5 a.m.  8)

The bread situation you described is disgusting.  Are they trying to make it an impulse item?  Bleh!  :P

Before my current trend, however, I hated people who stand and talk to friends and block the aisle and/or items....talk on the phone, FCS!  People without ID who want to write a check....cashiers and sackers who carry on personal conversations with each other while they do your order....items that ring at a different price than what is on the shelf or ad...the way people drive in the parking lot...and unattended children!

I know, I know, and yes I have talked to my therapist about all of this.  ;D

My mail carrier used to deliver between 11 a.m. and noon, but now it's late afternoon, so I will probably be able to get through some of my list before the mail arrives. Looking forward to your wonderful surprise.

I despise shopping for groceries as well so I go around 9 a.m. on SUnday morning. I usually don't have much of a line ahead of me at the checkout. Of course, they usually have at most two checkers, too, so if there is a larger group than usual, there are fewer people to check you out.

Well, if that's the issue, all we need to do is get rid of "Don't ask, don't tell."  Heck (or, "hecky durn," as you might say, Dear Reader Lulu), we'd even be able to hire back those Arabic language translators (soliders with a skill much needed by our armed forces today) who were fired because they love the love that dare not speak its name.

Jeesh.  Sometimes it's the simplest solutions that work the best.

Good morning, one and all!

I have returned to the land of the living – I think.  Wednesday night, when I got home from work, I had a craving for something to snack on, but couldn’t decide what I wanted. I finally grabbed some chips and some dip from the refrigerator and began to chow down.  Apparently, the dip I grabbed was past its prime.  So for the last 36 hours, I have spent most of my time either in the bathroom or under the covers, with only an occasional foray onto HHW to make sure everyone was okay and minding their manners.  I am back at work today, which means I am either a lot better, or I am even sicker than I thought I was.

DVD Player:  "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken"
                                 "U-571"

CD Player – House:  "Annie Get Your Gun" – Peters/Wopat

CD Player – Car:  "Mamas and Papa’s Greatest Hits"

VHS Player:   "Bah, Humbug!" Starring Me

My, my, my (three mys) I didn't know so many felt the same way about grocery shopping. And you guys are in the suburbs!!! Shopping is very difficult (in my humble opinion) in the borough of Manhattan. I go shopping at about 7am because the store I go to (Western Beef) has good prices but it's a typical small NYC store. Shopping at other times becomes a lesson in frustration. The aisles are barely wide enough for one cart, let alone people. If we go at 7am on Sunday morning usually the only people in the stores are the employees and we can take our time and not worry about bumping into people, unruly children, cart bumper cars, etc. The other problem w/Manhattan shopping is (I've mentioned this before) you have to get your groceries back to your apartment and since the nearest two grocery stores are at the least 5 blocks away, if you don't have a cart in which to load your groceries, your arms get a workout. Although delivery is usually available, I just refuse to succumb to that temptation so we push our cart 6 blocks filled w/groceries and then have to lug them up 3 flights of stairs. At least when you shop in the burbs, you have a car and you can park in front of your house and unload. I've gone on too long about this so I'll stop.

I'm wallowing in nostalgia today. I mentioned I listened to Purlie yesterday. This morning I did listen to Romanovsky and Phillips (a gay duo from the 80s who sang very politcal and funny material). This afternoon I am listening to the 1964 West End cast of Little Me. A friend has it on CD and has let me borrow it. The show has a song that isn't on the Broadway cast CD w/Sid Caesar called Rich Kids Rag. Swen Swenson from the Broadway cast went over to London with the show. After Little Me, I will listen to Miss Lansbury in the Broadway recording of Dear World.

To those of you who know or know of John Engles (once a popular high school drama teacher in the LA area): when GENERAL HOSPITAL dropped him from contract to recurring he signed a 3 year contract with DAYS OF OUR LIVES.  Now GH --- who changed plans to kill off his character --- has to recast his role!

Regarding Broadway ticket prices we were discussing yesterday, today we got a call from a client who is coming to NY next month and wanted tickets for LION KING for a specific date (a Saturday night, naturally).  There were none left at the box office so we called a broker.  Now the maximum legal service charge a broker in NY can charge is 10%, but brokers in Jersey can charge whatever they want.  The broker we called wanted $250 a ticket.  I suggested that since our client was bringing her pre-teens they might enjoy WICKED.  For that the broker only wanted $200 a ticket.  We are leaving it up to out client, but what this shows is that people will pay a lot more than face value for a hot show they want to see.  For the same $250 people are (still) paying for LION KING, they could see four different shows at TKTS or 2 shows at full prices.  What's more, these brokers get the best seats and the people who buy tickets legitimately are left with the remainders.  Also the production gets none of the money.  At least with the $480 PRODUCERS tickets, the money goes to the show, not some broker.  And anything they have left unsold go on sale at the regular price the day of (or before) the show.
Title: Re:THE THREE Rs
Post by: Jennifer on February 06, 2004, 10:51:55 AM
DR WEL: I would not buy from a broker charging those outrageous prices. Keep checking back, I'll bet you can find tickets for the date you need on your own.

As for grocery stores, well I live in the suburbs and can use a car. So that part is fine.  And I don't usually have a problem, except at the check-out lines. I hate waiting in long lines. Often I'll just grab a soap mag and read it while I wait.

The one place I hate waiting in line is Club Price.  They have no express lines, so sometimes it can take forever.  For some reason many people seem to buy carts full of stuff. I don't get it. They have some great prices (like on books and clothes). But for most foods, they charge really high prices. And I cannot for the life of me figure out why people would spend more.

Jennifer---
I'm not the one buying the tickets.  It's my boss's administrative assistant (the pc term for secretary) and since the client is paying for them we will let the client decide if she will pay those prices or not.  The point I was making --- and I may not have been clear --- is that price is no object for some people if it is a show they feel they have to see, and it's a shame that the shows cannot get the premium income but that it goes into some brokers' pocket.  It also shows that many people only want the current must see show no matter the price and that they won't take a chance on seeing anything else.

Welcome back, TCB. Sounds like a horrible bout. I've only had really bad food poisoning once in my life -- and that was enough. Since then I've read expiration labels fanatically (or phonetically). It's amazing how often expired food is still offered on sale at supermarkets. And I'm not talking about "Sell by" dates. I know things don't expire for weeks after that. I've even heard that they sometimes change the dates on meats when they expire to make them seem fresh. I don't even want to think about that one...

There's a very good column in today's LA Times about the whole J. Jackson stupidity: "Anatomy of a News Uproar"...  The final paragraphs are chilling:
"The FCC probe inspired by Jackson's antics has resulted in a five-minute delay being imposed on Sundays' Grammy telecast....and a five-second delay put on the Academy Awards on Feb. 29.
So the next time an Academy Award winner decides to criticize the President on TV -- who knows? If it gets cut, at least we'll know whom to blame."

Ben, I love Romanovsky and Phillips.  I have all of their CDs...how cliché is that?  Anyway, they came to The Evergreen State College here in Olympia about 10 years ago and put on a great show.  I got them to autograph one of their CDs for me.  I haven't heard about them in quite a while.  I assume that they're no longer performing, but sometimes I wonder if they're even still alive. :-\ Their website and on-line store no longer exist.  The library where I work bought a CD from the website (at my suggestion ;) ).  Does anyone know what happened to them?

CD:  "Young Vic"  Vic Damone; Decca's recordings (on one disc) of Alfred Drake and Kitty Carlisle in ROBERTA and Drake in THE VAGABOND KING; Vaughn Williams' symphonies #8 & #9.

DVD: The Vikings

MBarnum, I'm assuming the 1925 SHE, you are talking about is the same one I have labelled as 1926, starring Betty Blythe.  Curiously faithful to the novel; but a bit silly from the performances aspects by today's standards , of course.

I have a question about Joe Eszterhas... I've been reading about his new autobiography and his horrific time in the Austrian refugee camps. Well, I was in the Austrian refugee camps and they weren't horrible. I even got to be in a talent show with the other refugee kids. And they fed us and didn't shoot at us. And I got to sleep in an actual bed, albeit in a dormitory. It was better than the refugee place I was in in England. That was in Thorny Pitts. Which for years I thought was "Torny" Pitts - because that's how I pronounced it at the time with my Hungarian accent (which I lost) . I ate Jello for the first time in England. At the Salvation Army, I think. It was so pretty and jiggly, I didn't wan to eat it - just wanted look at it. I have no idea why all this is spilling out.

WEL makes a great point.

The reason Broadway ticket prices are so high is that that's what enough people are willing to pay.

It's a business, and the investors wish to make a profit.  The cruel "logic" of business dictates that the ticket price needs to be set at around $100 to ensure the show runs profitably.

And it's also sad: Broadway used to be an entertainment option for many, and now it's just for the rich.  I'd say that's brought about a change in the type of shows produced on Broadway.  Years ago, you could produce a musical that trades on verbal with (like Mercer's Top Banana or Li'l Abner).  Now, you're more likely to thrive with a show in which it doesn't matter if the audience speaks English (Cats, Moving Out).

I guess I am one of the few people who enjoys grocery shopping. I don't like long lines, but I am fairly patient so I just people watch or scan the tabloids.

I use to enjoy grocery shopping, but after years of doing it for a family it became tiresome.  I’m so clever.  When the boys were teenagers, with hungry friends stopping by all the time, I timed my shopping so I could pull up when they were home, honk the horn, & have the big strong boys carry in the heavy groceries.  Now Keith & I go together & he does most of the work.

For what it's worth... Another interesting memory about Austria. Vienna, to be precise. My mother tried to avoid going to the refugee camps -- which then turned out to be fine. She used up all her money, sold all her jewelry, paying for a cheap hotel. We would go to the same restaurant each day and order the same thing on the menu - the cheapest item - dumplings with egg. It was actually pretty good. Then, if she wasn't making the rounds trying to get us free stuff and political asylum, we'd go to the movies. My mother spoke fluent German, I didn't. So we'd sit there and she'd whisper the dialogue to me in Hungarian.
And I saw this gorgeous blonde doll in a shop window. Each day I'd go and look at it. And somehow she bought it for me. God knows how. This is the first time in my life I've ever wondered how she could afford that doll. This is cheaper than therapy, dear Hainsies and Kimlets.
Now I really must get back to work!

DR WEL: Is The Lion King really that popular still that one cannot get a ticket? I find that very hard to believe, especially in these winter months.

I guess the client can do whatever she wants. But I still think she or the secretary could find tickets if they wait closer to the date.

And if she insists on paying the higher price, I would buy the tickets through broadway cares, so at least the charity gets the money and not the broker.

DR Jane: I'm trying to figure out what you're referring to. What happened to me yesterday?

And my neighbor (the mean one, not the nice one who used his snowblower on my drive-way) ... will hopefully get his due today.

This is the one who uses his snow tractor at midnight and piles heaps of snow on the side of the street (right beside my drive-way).  This time he went too far. He has put so much snow, that it blocks 1/3 of the street. I was so stunned I almost called city hall to complain. But luckily it is snowing again today. So ALL of that snow should get pushed back in front of his drive-way today.

Some people are so stupid. I mean why would he push the snow to the left of his drive-way, when he knows that it will all be pushed back? He should put it on the right :)

Also, how can anyone be so insensitive to everyone around him?

Hello, All.

I'm delurking for a moment just to destroy all the Joy and Levity hereabouts with some much needed Doom and Gloom. (Oh, a Finian's Rainbow reference!)

Our Wednesday court appearance for the Unpleasant Business was to be the absolutely last court appearance and the final legal decision, for better or for worse.  Well, of course, that has been put off till next Wednesday, which will the the absolutely last court appearance and the final legal decision, for better or for worse.   Definitely.

The reason for this appears to be the following:  while Judge Dread is entirely deaf to any appeal to fine points of the law, justice, justification, or simple humanity, it has been intimated to him (by me, in a formal letter to the court), that while all of these things may be important, a harsh decision--like throwing a handicapped individual suffering from a possibly life-threatening disease into the hoosgow for a somewhat minor offense--may be damaging to his Dishonor's carreer on the bench.  Not that this was actually stated, but it wasn't too hard to read between the lines.

Justice?  Humanity?  Rule of law?  Not important.  Self-interest, however, seems to be a great motivating factor for those sworn to render impartial decisions.

And all your vibes in the past week were certainly an important factor in producing this latest nail-biting delay.

This concludes our Doom and Gloom.

You may now return to Joy and Levity.

The ending was funny. I really cannot remember laughing that hard.  It was funny seeing Ross/Chandler/Rachel/Monica doing a flashback to when they were 18ish.  Chandler's big hair was so bad.  The only one who I think looked about right was Jennifer Aniston.

Speaking of Friends, several of us over the last month or so have complained about the overly dramatic, countdown to the final Friends' episodes promos that NBC has been beating us over the head with.  Now, apparently, NBC is so thrilled with the response they have been getting to those commericals, that they have started using the same countdown commercials for Frasier and, of all shows, ED.  Let's hope that it doesn't spread to Good Morning, Miami.

Jennifer... Remember she wants tickets for a Saturday night.  That's the one night of the week where even the older hits still sell out.  Most discount deals are not good on Saturday nights, and the selection at TKTS is usually much smaller than on another night.  The Broadway Cares is a good idea and I'll suggest it to my boss Monday (needless to say HE leaves early on a weekend.)

Tomovoz --- When I saw FORREST GUMP for about the first half-hour I thought "what a great movie".  However it was all downhill from there.  There was a good ninety minute film hiding in a bloated 150 minute film and the plot just kept getting more and more bizzare as it wore on.  If life's a box of chocolates, I'll take the small size.  Less is usually more.

I've had a really eventful couple of days, but a propos today's subject:  I am listening to the correctly remastered release of the Percy Faith two-fer Lil Abner/Broadway Bouquet, with Broadway Bouquet now in its proper aspect ratio (or something like that).  :)  Oldies sent it to me free in exchange for the mono master that came out a few months ago.  The covers are identical, so I wouldn't buy this from a store--order it directly from Oldies so that you're sure to get the stereo version of Broadway Bouquet--the difference is astounding.

Full details will soon be published online at FrancesFarmer.com and in an upcoming article I'm co-writing with Frances' nephew, David, but I finally in the last couple of days have amassed overwhelming documentary evidence finally proving (to anyone but the fringiest of fringe conspiracy nuts) that Farmer did NOT undergo a lobotomy.  This has been a 21+ year quest for me (don't ask me why), and with the help of DR JR and members of the Farmer family, we hope to finally put this scurrilous rumor to rest once and for all.

Latest in the JJ flap.  A Tennessee woman has filed what is the inevitable lawsuit against Jackson, Timberlake, CBS, MTV for making her sit through lewd and lacivious programming.  The court ought to immediately throw this frivolous lawsuit out with a well-publicized rebuke to the woman who filed it and her lawyer for clogging up the already over-burdened court system with this sort of meretricious malarkay.  The lawyer oughta be disbarred.

Oh, I completely forgot today's media roll-call:

In my CD player at work:  The Music Theatre of Wichita's cast recording of HONK!  I haven't listened to the whole thing yet, but I will.  I got a copy of the original London cast from a Dear Reader and fell in love with it.  It's weird NOT hearing the English accents, and the guy playing "Ugly" enunciates too much...the way you don't like it, BK...but he has a very nice and strong voice.

In my DVD player:  the the non-understandable Swedish with no subtitles production of Chess.  I love this.

In my VCR:  a tape to tape tonight's hour-long "Hope and Faith" with guests Regis Philbin and Kathy Lee Gifford.

Otherwise, tonight I'm ushering (yet, again) at the Washington Center:
Quote
The Seattle Symphony's annual sojourn to the Washington Center will include Gerard Schwarz as conductor and Jane Eaglen, soprano. The evening will feature Busoni Selections from Turandot Suite, a Bright Sheng World Premiere, and Beethoven Symphony No. 3, Eroica. Ms. Eaglen will perform the Bright Sheng premiere, to be repeated later in the season when the symphony and Ms. Eaglen visit Carnegie Hall.

We get to hear it before those Carnegie Hall people!

I have a serious question for JMK, or Jrand, or BLT, or somebody with initials:

I am afraid I don't have a great deal of knowledge regarding Miss Farmer's personal life other than her commitment here at Western State Hospital.  However, I have seen the famous This Is Your Life episode that supposedly was done after she had the lobotomy.  If she indeed was not subjected to that ordeal, what was the reason for her almost catatonic state on that program?  Was she heavily medicated?  Were other procedures done that would account for that behavior?

Good evening one and all.

I stand before you, a fallen woman.  Yes, it’s true.  Even though I did not partake of the forbidden rice that was hiding in the bottom of my soup bowl or the forbidden cheese that was not low fat or the forbidden olive or the forbidden tomato that was part of my soup and salad combo at the Columbia Restaurant.  I ate of the forbidden Cuban Bread (GASP!)  today and await your well deserved chastising.

It was warm and it smelled soooo good.  And the butter (I sinned big time) was soft and creamy looking.   I couldn’t help myself.  I ate it and what’s worse, I ENJOYED eating it. I would even go so far as to say I wolfed it down.  Oh woe is me!  How shall I redeem myself?   I was so good all week long!

Thank you DR Ann.  And when, may I ask, is your recital CD going to be available??

I have recital CD's available if you'd like one, TCB, or anyone else for that matter.  It's only about 2/3 of the program, thanks to my father forgetting to hit "record" but all the broadway stuff made it on there.  With the exception of a few piano goofs and one or two sour notes from me, it turned out quite well, IMHO.

Danise you are too funny.  The Cuban bread sounds delicious though I can’t recall ever having any.  Is it a brown bread?  Years ago I baked all my own bread.  The problem was we would eat almost an entire loaf when it first came out of the oven.

busy day today.

took DAD to the emergency room this morning (10:00am) with major, major breathing problems.
CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE.
he unloaded one quart of fluid from his lungs in the e.r. within one hour.
by 2pm I had had him admitted and situated in room 331 of st. margaret's hospital.
 indeed a busy day.

in case some of you don't know, i withdrew YESTERDAY from SYMPATHETIC MAGIC at the Open Stage Theatre due to increasing family health-related stress.

TCB:  though this is of course always subjective, I find FF's appearance on TIYL to be far from catatonic.  Watch it again--she responds articulately and at length to all questions posed.  One thing to remember is that Frances was incredibly reserved in person and dreaded the TIYL appearance to begin with.  There are heart-wrenching moments on that broadcast, mostly due to Ralph Edwards' incredibly classless questioning.

Even more indicative of her "real" tv persona is the surviving film of her hosting her afternoon show in Indianapolis.  But that's a "whole 'nother story."  :)

My thanks for all the good wishes sent to der Brucer and myself.  We're over the hard part of moving, fortunately.  Now all we have to do is sort out what we've got, and find places for everything.

In the meanwhile, we've discovered something unexpected here in Rehoboth: other diners are quite willing to engage in conversations with total strangers, if approached in the right way!  We've done it two nights in a row.  Last night, we shared some of our personal pizzas at Dogfish Head with the couple at the next table, who shared in turn, and a wondeful conversation developed.

Then tonight, at Fusion, there was a party of five women (one celebrating a birthday), trying to decide what to have.  I recommended the Crab Bisque, with which we had just begun our meal.  Later, there were toasts to Roxie's birthday, and then we joined them at their table for another wonderful conversation!

When we were in SoCal, this sort of behavior would have been quite difficult to initiate.

I think I'm going to be very happy here.  Very happy, indeed!

apologies to Mrs. Katz, of course. ;)

You're apologizing to my mother?
As the song said...

I can't marry you in the usual way
Rice and shoes and borrowed blues
What do they say?
You're too wonderful for empty cliché
No "Here Comes the Bride" on wedding band
Need drown out the mood when you give your hand.
I'll commit to you, but it's more than just saying "I do"
We've a bond, inseparable, stronger than any glue
We're not going to start with a hollow token
"Till death do us part" need not be spoken
But if a wedding must entail
The breaking of a glass, the lifting of a veil
Then I can't marry you.

So, toss 'em out ---
The crinoline and crepe
Contracts, pre-nuptials, all that red tape
Don't toss a bouquet
It leads to spats
And, for heaven's sake, don't take the name, Joy Katz
We can do much better than that
By throwing out the old hat
I won't marry you
In the tired traditional way
Who could ask you to honor me?
And you sure as hell won't obey
We two can create a new tradition
Something involving a composition
That lets me say, in the only way I know how:
I want to marry you now.

Best thoughts, td, about your father.

Good evening!

Greetings from Memphis!

My flights from Richmond were good, and on time.  However, both segments were on puddle jumpers - and when I flew from Cincinatti to Memphis I was in the 11th row of the plane - which turned out to be the last row of the plane!!!  But a good flight nonetheless, it since it was not a full plane of people, the one flight attendant offered extra pretzels and full cans of soda and juice - always nice.

My hotel room is nice.  And has a jacuzzi!!! -Which I may make use of in the next few minutes!!!!  I had my "traditional - the day I get into Memphis" lunch at The Cupboard.  Today's menu (from the various selections): Fried Catfish, Fried Green Tomatoes, Fried Okra and Corn Pudding - it was a very "brown" plate. ;-)  -Oh, and the usual yeast rolls and corn muffins.  Sooooo good!  And soooo splurgy!  -Oh, and I also had a slice of Sweet Potato Pie too!  -Hey, at least I walked to and from there from the hotel - about a mile each way, so...

Then I finally went and saw In America.  What a beautiful movie.  Beautiful.  And moving in many ways.  Much more moving than I expected - or even "suspected" from the reviews - at least for me.  I was literally sobbing at least three times during the movie, and the final sequence just had me audibly sniffling!  And I forget to bring kleenex!?!?!?  At least I wore a sweatshirt with very absorbent sleeves.  :-[ ;)  -And the two girls - who are also sisters in real life - are amazing!!  I was thinking I would see Monster and Miracle too tonight - all in the same complex - but after coming out of In America, I just wanted to leave with "that" in my head for tonight.

So... I stopped at the health food store next door and picked up some Scandinavian style tuna salad (very tasty! - made with mustard instead of mayo, and some very good cookies (the oatmeal with cardamom was exquisite...was..).  Then I watched Austin Powers: Goldmember on cable (from the sublime to the ridiculous(!)), and then logged on, and here I am... So....

DR Jane - Get Well Soon!

DR td - I'm so sorry to hear the news about your father.  Many, many Good Health Vibes!

DR WEL - TDF also has some "special seats" set aside.  Just check their website: www.tdf.org.  If I recall correctly, the proceeds from their special ticket sales go toward both philanthropic and/or artistic causes.  *And I've also steered people toward the Ticket Desks at the hotels in NYC - they will sell to anyone who asks, not just the hotel guests.

RE: The Alet Ourt interview - <Standing Ovation> Brava!!

DRs SWW and DerB - Have fun unpacking - and getting to see and touch and use your own "stuff" again!  -I have a move coming up in April, and, once I get back from Memphis, if I can just go through one box of "stuff" that I have in my room over the next three weeks... I'll be halfway through all the boxes of stuff that I have! ;-)  -At least it's a start.

RE: Grocery shopping - As I've mentioned before, I love the place I shop at normally, so... -Even when there are lines...  However, when I have to go somewhere else, sometimes the insanity and inanity does get to me.  And there are some chains I will simply not step foot into - even if they are open on Sundays and sell alchohol! ;-)

There is branch of a Korean grocery store chain in Fairfax called Hah Nah Reum (sp?) - they also have stores called Super H now too.  Well, the lines in there are always long!!  -The prices and the produce bring the crowds in.  However, the lines there move FAST!!!  They have the women at the cash registers trained very well - and they have a slew of "bag boys" - well, more like "bag men" - wrapping things up and putting them in your paper and/or plastic.  It still intimidates me getting behind someone with TWO carts of groceries, but just about five minutes later (max!), I'm being rung up myself!  And sometimes that's faster than going through their express lanes since other "scared people" line up there, you end up with about 20 people in line for the Express registers... but only behind four or five people in the regular lanes - even if they have very full carts...

-Oh, and I do like the new self-checkout lanes that stores are offering now.  However, sometimes going to a manned - or "womanned" - register is still faster.  -And then there are those "first-timers" in the self-checkout lanes...;-)

Well, I think that's almost everything... Jaccuzzi time! -And only 225 auditions tomorrow!  YIPPEE!!!

WOW!  That was a long post!

RE: THE LION KING popularity/ticket availability - It's stil hard to get a ticket to THE LION KING because it's a known "commodity" and, more importantly, since it's a group sales dream!  It's a very safe show to book groups to see - all ages, all backgrounds, all nationalities.  -Which is also the reason MAMMA MIA! continues to run at 101% capacity - just like it's predecessor at the Winter Garden - well, now The Cadillac Winter Garden - CATS.
