Well, you've read the notes, the notes were fishy, and now it is time for you to post until the fishy cows come home - they're currently in Guam.

TOTD...

Questions for BK:

What is the most obscure show you can think of that deserved to be a bigger hit?

What is your favorite obscure original-cast album?

What hit show(s) deserved to be shrouded in obscurity?

What question(s) do you have for me?

The first one is for Matthew and Sing and Jose.

What is an SAB arrangement? I don't know nuttin' about music and I don't know what SAB means. I assume it's an acronym.

DR Ben, DR der Brucer guessed correctly last night.  The letters stand for the voices in a choir.  SATB would be the standard 4-part arrangement for a mixed choir [soprano, alto, tenor, bass].  Choirs that are light on men will look for SAB arrangements that have all the men singing in unison on the lowest part.

The second question is for BK.

What, if anything, did you have to do with the 1994 CD release from Varese Sarabande of The Secret Garden?  The producer of note is Robert Sher and you're listed as the Executive Producer. I see that it was recorded in London and New York in 1986 but not released until 1994. I just picked it up at Academy for $4.99

Post by: Ben on March 26, 2008, 06:08:03 AM
I saw The New Century last night. It's a group of 4 plays written by Paul Rudnick. The show is at the Mitzi Newhouse Theatre in Lincoln Center.

The first piece with Linda Lavin and the third piece with Jayne Houdyshell are both very, very funny (though the third does have some touching moments). The second piece doesn't quite work and the fourth piece has some very funny moments but falls apart (in my humble opinion).

Miss Lavin looks wonderful as the best mother in the entire world, bar none because of her work with P.L.G.B.T.Q.C.C.C. & O. (Parents of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Questioning, Curious, Creatively Concerned & Others). That woman can milk a laugh like a pro (of course she is a pro).

Peter Barnett, who has done his role in the second piece before is very funny as Mr. Charles, Currently of West Palm Beach (he plays a very, very, very, very, very, very GAY!!!!!!!!!! man with a public access cable show) but the piece is too long and wanders too much. The running gag of Shane is cute once or twice but it stops being funny after the 4th or 5th entrance. When Paul Rudnick is on (as in the first piece and the third piece) he is wonderfully funny. He's bright and sharp and right on the mark. But things like Mr. Charles just seem tired and full of stereotypical characters and dialogue that he's trying to puncture.

The third piece (with Miss Houdyshell) is another monologue about a woman from Decatur, IL whose life is crafts. She's talking to the Junior Chamber of Commerce about the importance of crafts to America. There is a side issue about her son who was "special" and moved to New York. There are some very touching and sweet moments to temper the humor. Houdyshell is a marvelous actor and I'm glad she's getting noticed.

The fourth piece brings everyone together in a maternity ward (don't ask how) and for a while it's very funny. Then Rudnick knows he has to end it and it doesn't really work. We go back to the Palm Beach public access show and everything falls apart. It's not staged well and it's one of those times where what is written looks very funny on paper but when it gets put on stage it seems to wither away. I felt like the performers were working too hard to sell the material. I thought if they just cut the Mr. Charles sketch and did the other three they would have a good evening (and wouldn't need an intermission) but then the last play would have continuity problems because Mr. Charles would not have been introduced. I'm not sure how to fix it, but then that's why I'm not a playwright.

I did have fun though and do recommend the piece. I don't know how well it will do but the Newhouse is a nice, intimate theatre and the price was right (TDF $26) so I'm not complaining too much.

Yesterday, my very own der Brucer sort of mis-stated the recipe and origins of the Hangtown Fry.

Firstly:

Drain a dozen oysters on paper towels.  Dip each one in flour seasoned with salt and pepper, then in one well-beaten egg, and lastly in cracker crumbs.  Fry in heated butter for a few minutes until nicely browned on both sides.  Beat eight more eggs with salt and pepper, pour the eggs over the oysters and cook until firm on the bottom.  Turn with a large spatula and cook the second side a minute or two longer.  Serves four.

Which recording of Thou Shalt Not were you listening too?  I'm guessing you were listening the one that was packaged with the Pajama Game revival:

-Which was released as an "Only Available from Amazon.com" CD initially.  -It still may be. ???

There are two legends about the creation of the Hangtown Fry.  The first has to do with a miner during the gold rush who, having gathered up a fortune in the nuggets, went into a hotel in Hangtown (aka Placerville) and asked for the most expensive meal they had.  Since oysters and eggs were both frightfully expensive during the gold rush, he told the cook to put them together and serve 'em up!

I prefer the second story.  Placerville got it's nickname because of the number of hangings that took place there.  Anything to keep law and order, y'know.  A man had been unjustly convicted of murder, and was sentenced to hang.  For his last meal, he asked for a dish "that he'd had long ago," which just so happened to be made from the ingredients that were frightfully hard to come by in those gold rush times - eggs and oysters.  In the time that it took to find those ingredients, the man's friends were able to prove his innocence.  The cook, however, after having taken all the time and effort to get everything together, insisted that the man eat the dish anyway.  Lo and behold, he liked it, and the Hangtown Fry was born.

Final story about the Hangtown Fry:

Back when I was growing up, my father, an aeronautical engineer, would bring various and sundry Air Force test pilots home for dinner on occasion - a chance for them to have some home cooking rather than restaurant food.  My mother would either extend what she had planned for the family meal, or, if given enough of a heads-up, prepare a Hangtown Fry for the adults.  It was quite popular with those fly boys.

OK, not that much of a story, but it's the one I know for a fact to be true.

I already plan to watch THE DEPARTED today. I recorded BLADE OF GLORY last night.

This morning, the DVR picked up THE SATAN BUG with George Maharis which I have always wanted to see and have managed to miss every time it's been on. Hopefully, I'll get to that today. I'll probably watch it before compleing BLADES OF GLORY.

I, like Elmore at least, spend much of my professional time at the SATB grindstone.  I am currently finishing an arrangement of "We Are Family."  Strangely the reference recording I am using is about 20 cents sharp.  I'm wondering if it's just this one (which I got off YouTube) or if the original was that way, too.

Does blank mean either LP or CD?

It means that I haven't completed my entry - there's a choice option that I haven't clicked yet.  As I said, it's a beginning. . .and it continues to grow. . .   ;D

One of my closest friends' father, Chuck, has been ill for some time, and we knew that the end was close at hand, so I have been trying to spend some time with the family. He was getting hospice care at home so I was able to visit him there a few times. When he finally went into an official hospice it was during my double session days, so I didn't see him there, but I think it was better for the family to spend his last days alone with him and not dealing with a lot of visitors.

He passed on Sat. so I've been helping with funeral prep, mainly choosing musicians to play and sing. My first thought, upon being asked to do this was: "I wish Singdaw lived here!"

My mom and her partner have been together for about 17 years, I think. Even though they have never married, his kids think of us as their family and refer to us as step-sibs and my mom as their step-mom. I really like that, and so I may now start referring to Naz as my step-father.

So, anyway, to add further to the drama, my step-father's mom passed away on Monday. She doesn't live in town and I've never met her (she's from Lebanon but has lived out west with her grandchildren for quite some time). She was 95, so that was a good, long life. But she fell and broke her hip, had surgery, went into a coma and that was the end.

He seems to be coping well with the news...I haven't talked to his kids about it yet.

Thanks td. He was the father of the sisters who produced THE ADVENTURES OF OCIEE NASH, a wonderufl children's film that I edited. I've been friends with the girls since college, and they were VERY close to their parents, especially Dad.

When they were filming the movie, the parents were there every single day; making hundreds of cookies for the crew, being extras, getting their friends to invest, and supporting their director daughter. They were always so open and hospitable and everyone always felt at home and part of the family. It's hard to think of him not being with us any more.

For me on tv tonight: AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL, BIG BROtHER, IDOL results and MEN IN TREES.

My local paper said today that only 5M people watched the latter and that it has a good chance of getting cancelled.

Btw, re: IDOL, i'm really not sure who will go home. But i have a feeling it could be a surprise.

I really enjoyed david cook (he does great when he changes songs). I also liked michael johns (this and his "bohemian rhapsody" in hollywood were the only 2 performances of his i've loved). I don't like kristy, but thought she did very well last night. I still like brooke white a lot.

I agree with DR Jose, about Remi. I could see her being B3, and Chikezie. It's getting tough though.

For the men i was a little surprised. I mean i had narrowed it down to penn, steve guttenberg or christian going. And i really think that christian probably stayed based only on cheryl (his partner's fan base). Same for adam. I think he stayed because of his partner (julianne hough). My girlfriend told me something that I thought I'd share. You know how some people, including myself, latch onto things as "signs" after a person passes on? It may not mean anything, but it's a way to tell ourselves that everything's ok and helps us deal with the loss.

She said that on his last day, all the family members had just spent the day with him, and they all told him that it was OK for him to go and that the rest of the family was waiting for him on the other side. After his granddaughter (adopted from China by his daughter and her partner) left,  he quietly passed on.

After things were taken care of, the rest of the family walked out into the parking lot, and a huge hawk appeared. It circled around, following them to their car. It seemed to take such an unusual interest in them that they noticed it and speculated that maybe it represented their father. They said goodbye to it and wshed it well on its journey, and then it took off and soared into the heavens, so high it was completely out of sight, as if it had, indeed, gone to heaven.

That image is somehow comforting to me, too.

Another daughter just called me. She put together a video slide show, and used "I'll Be Seeing You"...I think it was Etta James' version. She showed it to her mom and sister who immediately both broke down.

She is going to havew this playing at the gathering at their home afterwards on a loop and called me because she said she always refers to me for questions about music. So of course, I'm all emotional right now and not thinking clearly, so I am phoning a friend: HHW.

Can anyone think of a song tha might be appropriate but not so tear-inducing? A little more upbeat? I'd like to give her a few options. I'm also going to look thru my massive itunes...

Thanks!

Oh, the other drama was on Easter, when my brother, who lived in NC showed up. He had an injured hand (he's a carpenter) but hadn't sought medical help because he has "such a high deductable on his insurance."

It looked bad, as though it would require at least a half-dozen stiches. My DH noticed that he wasn't using it and was able to find an emergency care facility to see him and whisked him away before anyone knew what was going on.

It was too late to stitch it but they cleaned it up and gave him antibiotics and hopefully it will heal OK. But he will have a hell of a scar!

I'm so glad to be married to such a mensch, who always knows the right thing to do.

TOTD...

Questions for BK:

What is the most obscure show you can think of that deserved to be a bigger hit?

What is your favorite obscure original-cast album?

What hit show(s) deserved to be shrouded in obscurity?

What question(s) do you have for me?

 :D

A play I saw called Time Of The Barracudas, here in LA in what was supposed to be its pre-Broadway engagement.  Written by Peter Barnes, I thought it was very funny (and very black, as in dark) and Laurence Harvey and Elaine Stritch were wonderful.  It went nowhere, mostly because Miss Stritch was in her drinking days.

Favorite obscure cast album would probably be Whoop-Up, not that it's that obscure.

Hit show that shouldn't have been - most of what's been on Broadway for the last ten years. :)

Are you coming to see The Brain?
Title: Re:SOME KNOCKOFF FISH FROM GUAM

I saw The New Century last night. It's a group of 4 plays written by Paul Rudnick.

One of the things I have missed since moving from NYC to L.A. is seeing plays on and off Broadway. But in particular, I've missed seeing Rudnick's plays. One of my very favorite theater experiences was seeing "I Hate Hamlet." I've read both of Rudnick's novels and I own every play of his that has been published. (I still haven't read my newest acquisition, "No Regrets," but I'm looking forward to it.)

Did anybody ever see Rudnick's play "The Naked Truth"? I missed that one and it's never come out in print.

I licensed it from Mr. Sher for release on CD on Varese - same with Bring Back Birdie and Prettybelle.

BK - I meant to ask you this yesterday, but since I forgot, and since today is now Ask BK Day, well...

Which recording of Thou Shalt Not were you listening too?  I'm guessing you were listening the one that was packaged with the Pajama Game revival:

As opposed to this one (which you can "click" for more info):

(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41CK8ZK9ZWL._AA240_.jpg) (http://www.amazon.com/Thou-Shalt-Not-Original-Recording/dp/B000068U3S/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1206533321&sr=8-1)

-Which was released as an "Only Available from Amazon.com" CD initially.  -It still may be. ???

Yes, the one that's packaged with the not so hot Pajama Game revival recording.  It's just Connick and Kelli O'Hara on the CD.  I stuck it out to the end, but boy is it unmemorable.

I've played the synthesizer part of Little Shop of Horrors twice to date.  The part calls for 3 keyboards (synth, electric piano, organ) stacked.  The last two times, I was able to make do with 2 yamaha DX7 keyboards and it worked nicely.  The sounds on those keyboards were "old' enough to get the effects we needed, etc etc.

For this run, (number 3 for me), I'm using a new keyboard and have been working on programming the settings etc for the past two nights.  It's a more sophisticated keyboard then the DX7 and the sounds are more refined.  But OH HOW I MISS the old DX7!!!!  It made life so much easier.  I'm toying with the idea of attempting to switch back to the old keyboards, we'll see after tonight.

I've played the synthesizer part of Little Shop of Horrors twice to date.

WOW! That's quite an achievement. I love Little Shop of Horrors. I introduced by niece to the musical film when she was 5 and we haven't stopped watching it since. I mean, like, we have literally seen it about 60 times. I would LOVE to take her to see a stage version if one comes to Los Angeles. How do I get on a mailing list for that?

What songs were "lost in Boston" for this show? I know they cut a bunch of numbers for the movie (and, bizarrely, rewrote one), and it's a shame they lost the show's big punch line -- that Audrey winds up going somewhere that's green. But I'm one of the few guys on my block who actually owns the original version of the DVD, which contains the film's original ending! Bought it the day it was released, and I think it was recalled the second day.

It is a very fun show to DO and to see.  The movie is okay, I like some of the performances....but I also like the ORIGINAL ORIGINAL b/w Corman film starring Jonathan Haze and Jackie Joseph.

Ask bk:

What would be your recommended song to accompany a photo slide show post-funeral? Something not too sad but uplifting?

I like No One Is Alone, but any song on the Laurie Beechman album, No One Is Alone, would be appropriate.

I got a lovely envelope from DR MBARNUM in the mail today.  I watched Ms Suzanne Pleshette raging to live all over the place...a couple of scars on her chin that I had never noticed before were on view....and she had some BIG hair!

Some more episodes of THE GALE STORM SHOW, fun as always.

AND - RUNNING WILD, the movie debut of Mr John Saxon - but Mamie Van Doren thinks she is the star of the film, of course.

And of course she is the titular female lead.

I have this recording.  I actually like it.  It's different than the Simon/Norman version that was on Broadway, but it has its charms...in my humble opinion. :)

Eavesdropping in movies is always good for a laugh....PILLOW TALK is built on it....

But my favorite eavesdropping moment in movies is in IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE.

James Stewart calls Donna Reed and they have an intimate conversation and he tries to get her to say "I love you..."

Finally in MCU she says:  "I can't.  Mother's listening in upstairs."

We had NO idea this was happening.  There is a quick cut to mother upstairs with the phone in her hand:  "I am NOT!!"  And she slams down the receiver!

The DH and I are going to a wine tasting event tonight - at a local synagogue.

Do you think they'll be serving Manischewitz?   ;)

Years ago, not long after we moved to New Jersey, Keith's boss had a work related party at his house.  Glasses of wine were served off of a nice silver tray.  Keith & I took a sip & looked up at each other with shocked expresses.  He asked me if it was Manischewitz to which I replied yes.  While chuckling we scanned the expressions of the other quests wondering if any of them knew what they were drinking.

Later I was in the kitchen talking to the hostess.  I never saw a single bottle of wine on display. ;D

You can send Ms. Malubay home when you pry her from my cold, dead hands!!! (Yeah, I know she's not the greatest singer, but she's still half the reason I'm tuning in to that show.) I say, send home cute but talentless David Archuleta.

Dang me if I don't wholly agree with you, dude.  Archuleta is a voice looking for some guidance.  I'm of the opinion that his rendition of "Imagine" a few weeks back was wholly a fluke (Simon called it "a vocal master class").  He hasn't been anywhere near that  level since.

I've read that his  father, Jay, is an overbearing "stage father" who  berates him from time to time.  I think it interesting that Simon last night said that he doubted David picked his song for himself because it  wasn't "him."  I think the show enjoys having the obligatory, weekly cutesy comments from David when he can do his "gosh-oh-gee" boyish laugh -- the pre-pubescents squeal in girlish delight each time, but it does smack of being in the same category as "Smile, Louise!"   He seriously pales in comparison to David Cook and Michael Johns.  In time, though, he may totally surpass them as a  vocalist.

Do you you prefer the original ending?

I think I prefer the original "Shakespearian" ending for the play, but the revised ending for the movie. Frankly, I think they made the right decision to re-film the movie's ending, because the original ending didn't work on film -- at least the way they shot it. Of course, I can only judge it from the surviving grainy B&W print they gave us, but it was wayyyyy too long and drawn out. Ironically, "Don't Feed the Plants" is probably the best song in the play! Just didn't work the way they filmed it, though.

I recommend listening to close personal friend of BK Frank Oz do the director's commentary track on the "cut ending," if you're lucky enough to find that now-rare DVD.

Let me ask you -- and any other fans, please jump in here -- am I crazy, or do the male judges seem all over the map with their "advice"? If Chickezie does a Luther Vandross ballad one week, they say, "It was so predictable...you should be brave and try a radical re-interpretation." But if he tries a countrified version of a familiar pop song the following week, they say, "Why aren't you doing what you do best, the Luther Vandross ballads?" Honest to God, that poor guy looked like he was wanted to burst into tears when the judges got through with him last night. And who can blame him?

Number one is hard, but I should think Lost In Boston (the Ultimate Collection), Unsung Musicals (the Ultimate Collection), Haines His Way, A Broadway Love Story, Peter Pan, Unsung Sondheim, Liz Callaway: On and Off Broadway, The Stephen Sondheim Album, either of the Emily Skinner/Alice Ripley duets albums, and Unsung Irving Berlin (one disc edition).  Ten minutes from now the list would be different, however.

I'd say no iPod should be without the Bill Evans with Symphony Orchestra CD.

I am very partial to the "Cinderella" recording BK did.

I think Chikezie is terrific.  I first noticed a double standard back in Season 2 when Ruben Studdard sang every one of his songs exactly the way each was covered by artists who made the songs famous.  They praised him  week after  week.

Clay Aiken couldn't buy a break from Simon, who finally praised one of his songs by saying, "I imagined you with a bag over your head and you were terrific."  Others got the same old litany:  Too much like the original, do something different.  They've done that season after season...accepting some singers aping of originals and dissing others'.

The "judges"  are ridiculous.  Paula is beyond absurd.  Simon is entertainment value.  But...a bad word from Simon -- especially a prediction that the road has ended with one song -- generally sees the voting lemmings proving him right.  Randy is often deaf when it comes to judging "some singers'" performances.

I truly don't understand folks who have to rely upon the judges' comments before they can truly know what they liked and didn't.

The album I mean is a recording Bruce did of songs from various "Cinderella" musical presentations written by the likes of Richard Rodgers and Frank Churchill  and Stephen Sondheim and the Sherman Brothers.  The presentation is done as a cast recording of a "definitive" telling of the classic story with the best songs ever written for the various scenes newly recorded (in 1998) under Bruce's supervision:

1. Overture
2. In My Own Little Corner
3. Spread A Little Happiness
4. A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes
5. Raise A Ruckus
6. Impossible/Suddenly It Happens
7. The Ball
8. What Has Love got To Do With Getting Married
9. A Lovely Night/Ten Minutes Ago
10. Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?
11. Midnight
12. On the Steps Of The Palace
13. Once I Was Loved
14. If The Shoe Fits
15. Tell Hm Anything
16. The Stepsisters' Lament
17. Finale

Thanks!

Does it have to be a song?  I can think  of  a couple of really lovely classical pieces that would set  a  very strong mood...emotional, yet  not overbearing:

Elgar: Enigma Variations, "Nimrod Suite" (9th movement)
Barber: Adagio for Strings

There are others, to be sure, which I'm sure several DRs here can recommend.

For a bit of show biz, you might even consider an instrumental version of Gershwin's "I'm On  My Way" from"Porgy and Bess".

This is all very interesting to me, because I did not watch the series prior to last year, and I will never care about anything before, say, the "top 14." Thanks for the extra perspective.

I think Simon is entertaining, even when I disagree with him. And sure, roll your eyes at Paula, but I kind of think they need someone like her to balance out Simon's savagery. I'm glad that she can be counted on almost always to throw those poor singers a bone. The guy I can't figure out is Randy Jackson. "Yo, yo, check it out, dawg, check it out." He's become a parody of himself. He hears so much "pitchiness" in performers that, like you, I have become convinced there's something wrong with the man's eardrums.

On a slightly unrelated note, has everybody here seen the ubiquitous Youtube clip of that moppet Connie Talbot crooning "Over the Rainbow" on Britain's "Pop Idol" and reducing the judges to tears? She is the cutest thing EVER.

A full afternoon of viewing for me.

I began with THE SATAN BUG. Very entertaining little thriller. Very 60s. George Maharis at the zenith of his looks. What a surprising cast: Richard Basehart, Anne Francis, Ed Asner, Dana Andrews, many others.

Enjoyed it. But boy does it need a transfer with anamorphic enhancement. The aliasing trying to watch this from TCM was just distracting.

Maybe once the guys start pair skating together, the jokes will get better. Right now, it's very painfully unfunny.

Aliasing is the series of distracting wavy lines you get on NTSC broadcasts when tight line structures like venitian blinds and the grilles on the fronts of cars are photographed. Our TVs have a hard time dealing with such lines, so you get all these distracting jagged lines and waves as the camera pans by.

The aliasing on THE SATAN BUG today was the worst I've seen in a long time. A DVD that is anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs increases the scan lines and ups the resolution so that aliasing is more controlled. Still doesn't completely eliminate it if the bitrate of the transfer is low, but it still improves it.

On high definition broadcasts and HD discs, aliasing is almost completely eliminated.

Since it's a United Artists film, I'm thinking a domestic MGM release would probably be poor. Still, I'll think about burning my own DVD-R of the movie. I didn't erase it from the DVR after I watched.

Thanks for explaining. I don't think I've ever noticed this exact problem, but now that you mention it, I probably will. Thanks! :)

The things that bother me most about watching television are:

1. Ugly, distracting logos and promos on the screen DURING TV shows. Death is too good for the person who made that happen.

2. The fact that commercials are much louder than the regular programming.

3. End-show credits that are miniaturized and/or horizontally scaled as to be unreadable to make way for promotional content.

WHAT AMERICAN ACCENT DO YOU HAVE? (http://www.gotoquiz.com/what_american_accent_do_you_have)

Hmm, this L.A. girl is from:

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio."

I lived in Pennsylvania, granted the Philly side, and I highly disagree that the Midland folks don't have an accent. ;D

In truth, I grew up in L.A., with an English accent which I lost over the years.

I did have fun though and do recommend the piece. I don't know how well it will do but the Newhouse is a nice, intimate theatre and the price was right (TDF $26) so I'm not complaining too much.

Edi, I am very sorry to hear about your double loss in recent days; and please please please forgive me for this.....  In fact I blame Jose and yesterday's T.O.D.  When I was reading about your step-father's mother you wrote that you had never met her and she was from Lebanon; but I thouht you wrote she was a lesbian.  ROTFLMAO!  Please forgive me.

Beginning today I have a parking spot directly next to my building. Previously I had to walk to the parkade on Ferry Street. I am very happy with my new parking spot.

Isn't the man who wrote "Ma belle Marguerite", the same guy that was in AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (and no I do not mean Gene Kelly)?

Georges Guetary is the Frenchman you mean. He didn't write "Ma belle Marguerite" but he did sing (and record) it in BLESS THE BRIDE, the show with music by Vivian Ellis, who wrote the score for MR CINDERS which contained "Spread A Little Happiness."

WHAT AMERICAN ACCENT DO YOU HAVE? (http://www.gotoquiz.com/what_american_accent_do_you_have)
I'm a third generation Californian (now transplanted, but only after fifty years on my home turf).

My accent is, according to the quiz, Midlands.

OK, like having no accent.

When I was growing up, some of my schoolmates thought I was British!

So, now that I'm on the DelMarVa peninsula, is it these people around me who sound wierd, or is it me?

 ;)

Interesting, two Californians who sound as if they are from the Midlands.  In order to sound like the West Coast I had to mark there wasn't any distinction between the words, most of them anyway.  ::)

IT'S ASK BK DAY!

Question:

Now that I'm filling my IPod, what are the 10 Essential Bruce Kimmel-produced cds to put in it?

What piece of music should no IPod be without?

Even DRs may pipe in with their opinions - are you listening DR Ron Pulliam?

Oh, DR MBarnum, I have a few Bollywood soundtracks entered, my favorite is KUCH NAA KAHO.

I have them all. Hard to choose.

But I would have to say without seeing BK's Choices

Unsung Sondheim
Unsung Irving Berlin (2CD)
Unsung Musicals 1
Lost In Boston 1
Drat! The Cat!
David Shire At The Movies
Hello, Dolly! (Grammy Nominee)
Joannie Sommers & Jerome Kern
Liz Callaway (Frank Loesser)
Jason Graae (Live)

One of the things I have missed since moving from NYC to L.A. is seeing plays on and off Broadway. But in particular, I've missed seeing Rudnick's plays. One of my very favorite theater experiences was seeing "I Hate Hamlet." I've read both of Rudnick's novels and I own every play of his that has been published. (I still haven't read my newest acquisition, "No Regrets," but I'm looking forward to it.)

Did anybody ever see Rudnick's play "The Naked Truth"? I missed that one and it's never come out in print.

DR BrettySpaghetti - Did you catch Paul Rudnick's column in "The New Yorker" a couple of weeks ago?  It was a great account about the inspiration and creation of I Hate Hamlet.

Wednesday evening greetings from Minneapolis!  It's been a full day here at the conference.  Spent my morning in a pre-conference that I could have taught myself (but I didn't write the book...), went to a lovely vendor luncheon, then to the opening session to hear John Wood, the author of Leaving Microsoft to Change the World.  He was a fantastic speaker and I highly recommend his book.  Ended the day with 2 hours in the exhibit hall and just finished a nice dinner with my roommate Sue.

Your Result: The Inland North

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

TCB - Thanks for asking.   The three workshop performances in Issaquah are still scheduled for around Memorial Day weekend.  The director and we are dithering and dathering and hemming and hawing about whether they should be Thursday-Saturday-Sunday (maybe, just maybe, giving us time to do some tweaking between Thursday and Saturday, since the cast will apparently be on book) or Friday-Saturday-Sunday (giving us an all-weekend run, which might have other benefits).  The theater hasn't been putting any pressure on any of us to just decide on the performance schedule already, and I think they don't really need that much lead time to start selling tickets - it's a smallish theater, 250 or so seats.  They announced that we're doing the workshop in a newsletter to their donors, but we're still two months away.

So, you admit you "skipped" gym all through high school?  Is this the kind of example you want to set for the Vixter?

(Do the math, it's actually a complement!)

I know ... since that was the end of college gym for me!! Thanks!

I am looking forward to hearing how this progresses!

I love your show!

Paul has an opening for his art exhibit at the Sioux City Art Center on Friday. He is a basket case, lol. He's really very well known and respected as an artist locally, but his show is more about his stencil graffiti, litter art etc that he was doing in New York City back in the early 80s.  It's pretty funny actually, right when the city is trying to stamp out graffiti and litter, they are honoring Paul for graffiti and litter.  Here's a link to the show.  http://www.siouxcityartcenter.org/exhibitions/introduction.asp?key=141
There is also a link to images and an essay.

It's nothing like what he does now, so it's really fun to see a part of his history.  He has friends from all over the country flying in to be here. It will be a very interesting weekend.

Tonight he begged me to go out for a drink. I went but ended up eating instead of drinking.  So, I'll have to make up for that tomorrow.  He is working so hard to put this together and is so worried about everything. I"ll be glad when the day finally gets here

I finished HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE. I've watched it many, many times, but I think this is only the second or third time I've seen it on Blu-ray. Superb picture and with that uncompressed 5.1 soundtrack, impressive!

After that, I watched, of all things, BATMAN - THE MOVIE. No, not the Tim Burton movie with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson.

No, this is the 1966 Adam West-Burt Ward BATMAN movie made between the second and third seasons of the show. I had read that Fox is going to put this out on Blu-ray this summer, and since I had it but had only watched it once years ago, I thought I'd watch it again upconverted.

It's not a good movie, and it's actually the TV series stretched out to almost two hours with the four top villains of the show all crammed into one movie. A mess. Yes, there are some funny bits, and it's nice to see the TV trappings in a wider frame and with excellent color. But those wider trappings also reveal the tattiness of the standing sets like the Bat Cave.

Anyway, this version will do just fine. It actually looked superb upconverted. Not a movie I would watch that much more often just becuase it was on Blu-ray, so I'll pass on it.

One movie that came today was the HD-DVD of two ROAD movies with Hope and Crosby. I chose THE ROAD TO BALI, and it looked really superb. The movie has been in the public domain for a long time, and the DVD I had was really rather crummy with a soft picture and a soundtrack that sounded very worn.

The HD-DVD version of BALI looked and sounded wonderful. This one has excellent songs in it ("Moonflowers," "To See You Is to Love You," "The Merry-Go-Run-Around"), and the sharpness and Technicolor saturation was all one could hope for.

I also peeped at THE ROAD TO RIO (on the same disc), and it looked rather weak. The telecine operator didn't have enough contrast on the image so it looked overly dim. Sharp enough but the blacks are all washed out. The DVD I have of this looks much better in terms of contrast and grayscale. I may put the DVD on tomorrow just to make sure my memory isn't faulty.

I skimmed through the IDOL results. How sad that only one of the three in the bottom three was one of the weakest last night. The one going home has never been a favorite but this singer was certainly not the worst one last night.

However, as Paula said, somebody's going to go home, and I'd be surprised if ANY of these three have a real shot at winning, so it's no great loss.

I do hate that the two singers with the worst pitch problems will be back again next week. Ugh!

DR BrettySpaghetti - Did you catch Paul Rudnick's column in "The New Yorker" a couple of weeks ago?  It was a great account about the inspiration and creation of I Hate Hamlet.

Dang, I missed that! But I subscribe to the NYer, and haven't thrown an issue away for about two years, so I'll go hunt it down. Thanks!

George I'm glad you are happy about the snow.  We keep getting weather alerts for a cold front.  Snow had been expected this morning.  I'm pleased to say, so far, it has stayed in the mountains.

It didn't last very long at all. :P

Tonight's Side Show went very well!  We had a great audience and standing O at the end.  Tonight was the performance that my season ticket was for, so my friend Margo came to see the show.  She loved it!
