Title: STUFFED KISHKA
Post by: bk on March 27, 2008, 01:17:29 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were stuffed, and now it is time for you to post until the stuffed cows come home - they're currently eating stuffed kishka by the pound.

Favorite junk foods.

TOTD:

Hmmmm.

Cheetos are a bit of a guilty pleasure.

The "Puffs," not the crispy ones.

KFC.

And I don't know how one resists the crinkle-cut fries at Del Taco.

They are PURE evil.

These are supposedly kishki.  I don't know if they're stuffed.  What would you stuff a kishka with?

OMNIBUS KETCHUP CATCH-ALL POST:

***INJURY RECOVERY VIBES*** to DR td.  I truly hope you are OK.  Wish there was something we could to to help.

Glad your conference is going well thus far, DR Ginny!  :)

No, DR SWW, I was not driving.  But even so, I was probably OK.  A few sips of a few types of wine over the course of several hours - and with snackies - would be relatively safe, I would think.

DR Vixmom:  :D   30 lbs!!!  That's fantastic!!  CONGRATULATIONS!!!!   :)

CONGRATULATIONS to DR Cillaliz's Paul.  And thanks for the link to his exhibition!

CONGRATULATIONS to DR MBarnum on his new, convenient parking space.   :)

The wine-tasting was very interesting.  I was wrong; it was not held at a synagogue, but at a local wine shop.  It was co-led by the sponsoring Rabbi and the proprietor of the shop.  They had done a lot of preparation, and it was great.  Amid a great deal of learning, we sampled 5 Kosher wines, all of which were quite excellent and nothing like the syruppy sweet stereotype.  They did say that they had sampled about 120 wines to get down to these 5, and that some of them had been quite horrid.

DR BrettySpaghetti - The Paul Rudnick article I mentioned yesterday is titled, "I Hit Hamlet", and it appeared in the December 24, 2007 issues of The New Yorker.  Here's part of the "abstract" (since the full article is not available online) from The New Yorker's website:

PERSONAL HISTORY about actor Nicol Williamson and Paul Rudnick’s play, “I Hate Hamlet.” In 1987, Paul Rudnick moved into an apartment that had once been the home of John Barrymore. Barrymore had taken up residence in 1917, just before he began performing his legendary Hamlet uptown. Barrymore appeared with Katherine Hepburn in “A Bill of Divorcement,” as Mercutio in “Romeo and Juliet,” opposite Carole Lombard in “Twentieth Century,” and opposite Greta Garbo in “Grand Hotel.” Rudnick began a novel about a character named Andrew Rally, a sitcom star who moves into Barrymore’s apartment just as he’s about to play Hamlet at Shakespeare in the Park. He gets apprehensive about returning to the stage when the ghost of Barrymore appears. Rudnick soon realized it would make a better play than novel, and he completed a draft of a two-act comedy called “I Hate Hamlet.”

-I also liked his most recent "I'll Be A Monkey's Agent" shout & murmur.  ;)

As for the Topic of the Day...

I really don't eat that much junk food at all - and I'm restricting "junk food" to the pre-packaged, high fat, high sodium, high sugar stuff in the stores, not the stuff that is baked in a bakery or that I bake myself.  -Levain's Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookies are most certainly not "junk".  However, I do sometimes get a craving for something that I know is totally not bad for me, and when that happens, well...

Salty - Potato Chips, but if I had to narrow it down to one type of potato chip snack, well...  Funyuns.

Sweet - Snack Cakes.  And, again, if I had to pick just one totally junky snack... Sno-Balls.

*Although, I prefer the traditional pink ones.  ;)

Good morning, all! I have a few rounds of laundry this morning and a lot of THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER to write about.

I took the American Accent quiz: Inland North, whatever that means.

About a year ago this time, I began working on a restoration of Harold Arlen's LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40 for the Library of Congress Music Division. We visited the Shubert Archive to look at - and photocopy some - original materials, the Gershwin Trust librarian worked his fanny off copying everything they had and shipping it, we had to do budgets by the beginning of June, and I wrote out vocal sheets, and assembled scores. Contracts were supposed to be in place at the end of the summer. Through brouhahas and what I would guess are major beaurucratic snafus, we still have no authorization to continue the work, I cannot bill for what I've done, and the Library owes me and a few colleagues money for laast year's work. I'm both irritated and angered by this nonsense.  Yesterday, I sent an email about all this to several colleagues - including those who also deserve payment for work performed - as well as friends at the LoC and the Gershwin Trust. There's been no response from anyone.  I guess there will be no LIFE BEGINS . . . orchestra reading of the restoration in May.

Fred, yes! I think so.  I haven't thought about it in some time, and I think we need to wait for house seats from Patrick.  I told him I'd let him know more once I knew how many were going. I thought I'd sent Julie an email but she hasn't responded, and I forgot to ask DR Jose!

As for dates, either Saturday matinee April 26 or Sunday matinee April 27.

Laura - I'm puzzled by what the question was.  What I've heard the question to be must be incorrect, since it didn't sound inflammatory enough to have provoked a "Wow" and rude "None of your business" response from Chelsea Clinton, who is after all putting herself out there for questions and should expect a tough question every now and then.

Title: Re:STUFFED KISHKA
Post by: FJL on March 27, 2008, 07:51:47 AM
I'm a very very big fan of Hillary Clinton, but I'm finding Chelsea Clinton's attitude of wanting things only her own way, and putting herself out there for what she wants to say but thinking that she can single-handedly set the limits, to be a little oblivious to the way things work in the real world.  it was one thing when she was a minor, but she's almost 30 now.

Post by: FJL on March 27, 2008, 07:56:03 AM

Maybe some DR can come up with this.  Ever since the TOD the other day about running gags, I've continued to add to my list as I think of them.

But there's one that's eluding me.  bk used to say it all the time; almost every day.  But he hasn't for a long time.  I remember it as being a fairly common, everyday phrase, and he either purposely transposed two letters or changed one letter to make it into something else.

I know that's pretty vague, but it's driving me crazy.  Any DR have a clew what "bk phrase" I can be thinking of?

I guess I'll put in an IDOL spoiler though I think it's silly since the news was all over the newspapers and internet this morning

I was delighted that Carly was not in the bottom three this week. I think her fan base woke up and started calling after last week's scare. She did seem to be pushing it this week and wasn't as smooth and as accomplished as she's been throughout the rest of the competition, but I'm sure part of that was nerves over coming to close to being eliminated this week.

I'll bet the same thing happens to Jason Castro next week. His fan base will call en masse no matter how well or poorly he does since it's clear he's not going to rank near the top without help. I really do not like his singing style at all though he tends to stay on pitch more than many of the others.

Couldn't believe Ramiele wasn't in the bottom three after such a lousy performance this week. I think she's by far the weakest singer left.

I noticed Dolly Parton is the guest mentor next week. Does that mean a country week?

I found this great publicity photo from 1903: it's William Norris, the star of BABES IN TOYLAND, dressed for Act 2.  This is a publicity shot from early June 1903, and it's an assembled costume.  His costume for "The March of The Toys" was actually more peculiar!

Norris, was 33 or so when he played Alan in BABES; he also starred with Peggy Wood in Sigmund Romberg's MAYTIME. His last show was the 1927 Rodgers & Hart CONNECTICUT YANKEE, in which he played Merlin.  He died around 1930.

I guess I'll put in an IDOL spoiler though I think it's silly since the news was all over the newspapers and internet this morning

IDOL SPOILER-ish

I don't know if anybody has kept track of this kind of information, but at this point, isn't any American Idol contestant who winds up in the bottom-three DOOMED to be voted off eventually? In other words, has any previous American Idol winner ever found him/herself in the bottom three during the weeks of Top 12 through Top Four? I mean, it's all well and good if a Carly or a Jason narrowly escape being voted off for another week. But since all but ONE are destined to go bye-bye, aren't they just fooling themselves, and us?

Ramiele and David are obviously getting a lot of votes for being cute. But Ramiele is a better singer, I think. Her performance wasn't up to par last week, but the poor kid was sick. Don't worry, she'll be voted off eventually. My favorite right now is Brooke, but I doubt she'll be going all the way either.

I heard a little bit about it, but what was his question?

IMHO, It is all rather silly.

"Miss Clinton was asked by Evan Strange, who works for the student newspaper, whether the Lewinsky scandal had damaged her mother's credibility as a candidate."

Chelsea’s response:
"Wow, you're the first person actually that's ever asked me that question in the, I don't know maybe, 70 college campuses I've now been to, and I do not think that is any of your business,"

Just worried that she's hurting her mom's campaign

I don't see Chelsea's reaction to that question as a negative.

First, she's stumping for her mom, but she's not campaign manager or on her mom's election staff.  She's stumping as "daughter" of the candidate.

As daughter of the candidate, I do believe she has the right to discriminate about which questions to her are appropriate and which are not.

When she "stumps", for instance, she doesn't answer  questions from the omnipresent media.  I give her serious props for that.  I realize the question about Lewinsky was from a student reporter, but he was part of the constituency she was reaching out to.

The question asked of her was about the impact her mother's handling of the Lewinsky affair might have on her.  Aside from it being totally a jejune question to ask of the former first daughter, the implication here is that her mother "handled" the affair in a way that was "public" and was, somehow, the business of the public. NEITHER is applicable, IMO.  We have no idea what went on between Bill and Hillary.  We know that she stood by Bill and that is all we know.

I think it was a very rude thing for anyone to ask anyone's daughter.  To mention Monica Lewinsky to Chelsea as though Lewinsky had any bearing on Hillary's campaign (she doesn't to my way of thinking and any attempts to put her there are a bit "much", as well) was dumb.

I think it's more a matter of the question being irrelevant than "not his/her business." The student wasn't asking what kind of underwear Chelsea was wearing. She should have just said, "No" and got out.

YEs....several weeks ago, Ryan asked Paula what she thought of the bottom three and Paula said she had never seen a bottom three with such talented people.  First of all, I have no memory of who the bottom three were that night.  But Paula is remarkably free of any memory regarding her tenure on "American Idol."

In Season 3, we had a bottom three consisting of Fantasia, Latoya London and Jennifer Hudson.  Each had sung beautifully the night before.  Each had received high marks from the judges the night before.  I also think it was the first time any of them had been in the bottom three.  That was the night Jennifer Hudson went home.  Some really weak singers were "safe" that night and not one of them has matched Jennifer's subsequent success.

Fantasia, however, went on to win that season's title.

I don't think last year's winner...Taylor Hicks...ever was in the bottom three (no matter how I prayed for it).   Carrie Underwood was never in bottom three, although her runner-up, Bo Bice, was in there once.

Reading about Chelsea I have become interested in Meghan McCain.  DR Laura I think she will be more to your liking.

Quote
But Meghan McCain, 23, steers clear of politics and instead fills her blogs with fashion and make-up tips and happily describes herself as "an airhead".
Blogging about a recent trip to the White House, she told her readers: "Before there are any peanut gallery comments, no it didn't feel like a 'home'. At home, I lounge around in sweatpants. We met Mrs Bush and Jenna who gave us a tour.
"It is everything people say it is and more. Just truly, absolutely breathtaking.
"However, I do think it’s in need of some modern art. I was an art history major after all and love everything Andy Warhol has done - there should be one in the White House!"

I saw the dress...and it looked a tad "strange" to me...especially atop the bosoms where it looked like she tucked it in or something.  From the draping, it seems to have been done by Rami Kashou (sp?).  But I don't actually remember if it was his or not.

Again, I speak as someone who would  love to see Hillary Clinton as President.  But I think the question of Senator Clinton's judgment (in going very public and even somehow coining the expression "vast right wing conspiracy" for the Lewinsky allegations) seems like everybody's business who has to decide whether to vote for her.

Is it a tasteful question to ask of a now-28-year-old daughter who is putting herself out there for the purpose of promoting her mother's campaign and one would assume her mother's qualifications as a potential President?  That I don't know, but I think the subject certainly is the "business" of the voter in evaluating Senator Clinton's judgment.

I wouldn't like many of my judgment calls to be scrutinized, but then, i would never run for public office.  And I think I would never put myself out there and under scrutiny the way Chelsea Clinton has, either.

Heh.

OK, I did a little research on this.

SEASON ONE: Winner Kelly Clarkson was never in the Bottom Three.

SEASON TWO: Winner Ruben Studdard was never in the Bottom Three, but significantly, was in the Bottom Two three weeks before the end (in a field of five).

SEASON THREE: Winner Fantasia Barrino was in the Bottom Three five weeks before the end of the competition (field of six).

SEASON FOUR: Winner Carrie Underwood was never in the Bottom Three.

SEASON FIVE: Winner Taylor Hicks was never in the Bottom Three.

SEASON SIX: Winner Jordin Sparks was never in the Bottom Three.

So what have we learned? In six years, there has been only one time where the winner of the competition was clearly not the front-runner in a field of six. At this point, we have a field of nine. Thus, if the trend from previous seasons continues, Carly, Kristi Lee, Syesha and Jason are certainly toast. Barring some kind of miracle, there is really no way any of them can win.

My money would be on Michael Johns or David Cook to survive until Top Three. I hope Brooke White can last that long as well. As far as I'm concerned, she is already the winner!

I wasn't considering Hillary's remarks about the "investigation".

That said, I agreed with her then and am more than certain now, in retrospect, that mountains were made of grains of sand at the outset and that is why the entire process was blown way out of proportion.  That does not negate the President's lying under oath about not having had sex, but then that never harmed his popularity or approval rating.

I was okay with who went home. I was even okay with any of the bottom 3 going home (i don't think any of them will win, and i don't particularly like any of them, although i do find jason appealing at time).

As DR RonP said the winners have occasionally been in the bottom (i think ruben was as well once). When you think about it normally  the winner wouldn't be in the B3 so early on. But every time someone gets voted out their fans usually vote for someone else. And in the case of carly last week, i don't think it's necessarily that she was unpopular, more that people thought she was safe (and maybe a bit that she talked back to simon).

I think the most popular right now are the 2 davids.

Our newest favorite junk food snack are the Lundberg Rice Chips.  The first three ingredients are brown rice, brown rice flour, & white rice flour.  NO WHEAT.  Our favorite flavors are B-B-Q & Sesame Seaweed.  I can't believe how much I like anything with Seaweed.

I can't swear it is gluten free.

Agreed!

Chelsea is taking questions from "the future of America" that concern the current campaign, and, well.. the future of America.  She has every right not to field or answer questions that are personal inquiries into the lives of her and her family.

Valentino - the ersatz bio pic from producer Edward Small is on TCM today at 6 p.m. EST.

The title role is played by Anthony Dexter nee Walter Fleischman.  Tennesee Williams writes in his Memoirs of seeing Walter play The Christ in a Passion Play when both were college students, and being completely enamored of him....and his lack of costume.

Was anyone as surprised as I was last night when Kristy Lee Cook WASN'T in the bottom three for the first time this season?

Not I.  Her song choice more or less cemented that.  Which brings up something else I've been meaning to mention/talk about...

The judges ALWAYS talk about "Song Selection".  I think what the Contestants keep forgetting is that they are indeed Contestants, they are Competing against each other.  Yes, they can pick a "good song", but if most of the people who are casting votes for them have no idea what words and melody just came out of their mouths, well... They've sunk themselves real good.  The song doesn't have to be "wildly popular", but it should at least be something that "is in the air".  I really think that's what did Chikezie in last night - and even affected David Archuleta's standing.  Yes, they liked the song, but if their public had never heard the song before, well, they basically just alienated them.

"American Idol" is basically a "Popularity Contest" in the guise of an over-produced mega-Talent Night.  And I believe the "popularity" part carries over to the songs themselves.

*Of course, now there's all the talk about David Cook covering Chris Cornell's version of "Billy Jean" almost phrase for phrase.  Hmm....

So, what you're saying, Jose, is that the general public isn't going to like something they haven't heard before.

In that case, there is absolutely no hope for any new songs that are written, unless they sound exactly like something that has been written before.

This may explain the popularity of Andrew Lloyd Webber.

I well remember Ruben Studdard in the bottom that one particular week, and he should have gone home that week. I never thought he was anything but mediocre, but as the weeks wore on, I always felt he got worse and worse, his voice more and more gravelly and often missing notes. Yet, the judges propped him up week after week. They were determined to have a "soul singer" be the Idol that year.

I thought Randy Jackson was going to have a heart attack that night that Ruben was in the bottom group.

The perp was never much in doubt but finding evidence to pin on him was the problem. Pretty good episode.

Next, I put in the Blu-ray of THE DEPARTED. I've only watched about 90 minutes (have another hour to do), but it is a very compelling Boston mob drama. Very fascinating parallel of Matt Damon and Leo DiCaprio in "mole" positions in their respective squads.

Mark Walburg definitely deserved his supporting actor Oscar nomination (he's hilarious), and DiCaprio would have been nominated for this is he hadn't made BLOOD DIAMOND the same year. Damon is superb, too. Really, four of these actors should rightfully have earned nominations for this movie (Jack Nicholson should have been the fourth), and only Walburg did. Funny how those things work.

I don't believe Chelsea should be responsible for answering any questions regarding Monica Lewinsky.  She did not have sex with Monica, nor is she married to the man who did.  Why should be expected to answer any question regarding her parents marriage?

Strange book Jane!  But I love his writing.  His new book is out in May.  His last one (Short stories that are for the most part linked) is wonderful.  Dirt Music, his last novel, whilst beautifully written, goes nowhere.

So, does the jeep sing soprano, alto, or bass?

 ;) ;D

Dharmendra sang bass, Asha sang tenor
And the little jeep would join right in there

Welcome to The Shining DR td.
I never really understtood the criticisms!

I loved those scenes with Danny going along the corridors.

The film was beautifully referenced in "Hot Fuzz"

She has every right not to field or answer questions that are personal inquiries into the lives of her and her family.

However, has she simply answered "No", we probably would not have heard about it. Her "None of your business" reply was a natural pick-up for the media and it let them drag up the Monica affair again!

"No" would have been an answer.

Her point:  It deserved no answer as it was none of the questioner's business.

I don't believe Chelsea should be responsible for answering any questions regarding Monica Lewinsky.  She did not have sex with Monica, nor is she married to the man who did.  Why should be expected to answer any question regarding her parents marriage?

I agree.

I have been given an impossible task: to fly in and out of a small city for a meeting in one day. I can't get in before the meeting begins, and there are no flights after the meeting is over.

Although, I guess I can take the route that goes from the small city to San Fransisco to Las Vegas to Boston to Minneapolis to Phoenix.

Her point:  It deserved no answer as it was none of the questioner's business.

Maybe it's because I'm a reporter, but I would disagree with her point. If she's stumping for Mom, and the position is for the most important job in the world, I think it's a perfectly reasonable question to ask. Hillary has presented herself as the person who you want to "answer the phone at 3 a.m." Why should Americans take her word for it? We need proof. And if Chelsea is taking questions from an audience, she should expect to be asked questions outside the neighborhood of "How are you?" It's a tough job, and we have tough questions. I'm glad the question was at least asked.

I'm surprised she wasn't prepared for the possibility with a better response.

It was a stupid question & I have difficulty imagining any response would affect Hillary's election.

If the intent was to embarrass the Clinton campaign, it was a brilliant question.

And any news mention of Monica re-enforces Hillary's negatives in the public mind - and her campaign is already on life-support.

It's sort of been discussed, however... She apparently had the work down in Chile by some "miracle doctor"... And she paid cash for the operation/injections... And, of course, now the doctor has been brought up on charges of malpractice, so...  Ah, well...

Agreed!

Chelsea is taking questions from "the future of America" that concern the current campaign, and, well.. the future of America.  She has every right not to field or answer questions that are personal inquiries into the lives of her and her family.

I saw Chelsea give her intro (On TV not in person). She talked about having a job and living in New York and being out to support her mom. She said when it's over she'll go back to her life and her job. I don't think she has any political ambitions.  I think it's outrageous to be asking a child about a parent's reaction to the other parent cheating.  I think she's showing a lot of class by not answering those personal and outrageous questions. Go Chelsea!

Musical Theater Crossovers.

1) Loreli Lee visits Nelli Forbush in the South Pacific and they sing Just a Little Girl From Little Rock

2) Ella Peterson while traveling stops in this drought ridden town and meets Lizzie Currey and they both dicovered that they pretended to be Melisande.

3) While traveling in Greece, Carmelina Campbell meets Donna Peterson and discover they both have daughters whose father could be one of three men.

After I finished THE DEPARTED, I watched another episode of NUMB3RS. This one had to do with a prisoner scheduled for death who wanted to see his daughter for the first (only) time and was bargaining for the opportunity with facts he had about murders he committed and bodies he had buried. An OK episode, but again, not much mystery.

DR MBarnum you must have posted just when i was posting my question.
I too was very happy with who won. At first i was not that fond of natalie (since she seemed oblivious to matt and was sort of prostituting herself out to him). But as the weeks grew, i became more fond of her (especially as others became more and more vile).

I think nat is at least good-intentioned. Even if she is sometimes dillusional. I like that better than people who are malicious like chelsia.

So i was quite happy with the win. And happy with chelsia going home (although i would have been happier probably with james leaving). Hopefully this week!
