Today is mine, all mine! And I have the morning off from church tomorrow!! But I do have to return to Yale tomorrow night for a graduate recital of a voice major friend of mine.
-
Todays TOD;I love the look of MEET ME IN ST LOUIS, the GODFATHER films, and LA CONFIDENTIAL;Yesterdays tod, I was driving in the country, enjoying Mich's latest snowfall scenery, listening to the Anthony Perkins CD.Half the songs were from a Epic lp, 10 or so were aimed at the teen market, songs about being in high school, the Space program(if there's life on Mars, there's hope for me)Todays music wa the complete STUDENT PRINCE on Jay records, which I'm liking a lot. Also caught a flick on Fri, RUN FAT BOY RUN, with fave Simon Pegg. It's not as sharp a genre tweaker as Hot FUZZ or SHAUN of the DEAD, but its a very sweet comedy romance ,a la ROCKY spoof.

Saturday morning greetings! The way to get the hotel business center to oneself is to arrive at 6:15am 8)
Today I'll attend 2 sessions at the convention center, but have to leave without hearing the closing speaker, Paula Poundstone. When I made my plane reservations there was another speaker scheduled who didn't interest me and who had to be replaced. Staying for Paula would make my getting back here to the hotel for my luggage, getting on the shuttle, and getting to the airport on time pretty tense. Sue will have to listen and laugh for me. She has a later flight back to Dayton (I'm flying into Cincinnati).
-
Last night's all-conference reception, sponsored by one of the big technology vendors, was fun. Lots of great food and a "State of the Loon" Minnesota variety show. That was kind of lame, but not totally corny - reminded me of the talent from small towns that's sometimes on A Prairie Home Companion.
-
Apparently, being here at 6:30am(CDT) is the way to have HHW to oneself, too.
-
Good morning, DRs JRand and Michael S!
-
And the word of the day is: YESTREEN!
Yestreen
Now it looks as though they're here to stay,
Oh, I believe in yestreen

Good morning, DR GINNY.

Yesterday's TOD, enjoyed this morning: Dunkin' Donuts sausage, egg, and cheese on a biscuit. :)
-
The biscuits are so good, but alas - they never seem to have them in inventory.
But today they did.
So it's a banner day.
-
Who is responsible for the biscuit inventory?
I thought you were.
I thought you were.
Somebody at the drive thru wants a biscuit.
Damn.
-
Off to work. Oh well.
-
Good morning, Lar! did you get my phone call the other night?
-
I only have one day of posts left to catch up on but I thought I should say hi to Elmore while he's here, and thank him once again for the delightful music!
-
I awoke with a trmendous sinus headache, which may or may not have anything to do with consuming a few drinks at Chuck's wake last night.
-
The singer and bagpiper I recommended were a big hit. Sam, the singer, used to sing with our pops orcehstra (I worked with them for 10 years) and we had a nice time afterwards reminiscing about the crazy conductor who never remembered my name: ("Girl? Where's my girl?" and introducing Sam... "And now, here's (stage whisper: Sam! Sam Hagan!) uuuhhh...Sam!)
-
Thanks once again to all the DR's for song suggestions! I put about a dozen songs on a CD and the daughter swung by and picked it up from me at work. I hoped there was something she could use, and she did. She chose Eva Cassidy's "Fields of Gold".
I had forgotten that it was a live recording, but the applause at the end blended in with the applause of the assembled crowd.
The daughter isn't an editor but she put together a beautiful slide show, laughter and tear inducing. Just wonderufl.
-
Oh dear, I ran off Elmore.
I thought I'd see if he was familiar with "Celtic Alleluia", which was sung at the funeral. It was so beautiful.
I told Greg I want Sam to sing at my funeral. (Hope that won't be anytime soon...and Sam is quite a bit older so...)
His signature piece with our orchestra was a Porgy and Bess melody (he was an opera singer) and "Oh Lord, I'm on my Way" would be my choice...assuming I was headed in that direction.
Now he is a cantor for a Catholic church nearby. I had no idea, but the people at the church all knew him and he was able to work well with the accompanist at the church where the mass was held. He really took command and held things together, directing people when to sing along, etc.
-
Handsome Sam:
-
OK, back to ketchup with yesterday's posts...or at least get some coffee so my headache will go away and I can see better.
-
Oh, and last night I was emotionally wiped out. My DH sugggested we go see MISS PETTIGREW to cheer us up, but I slept through the last half. What I did see I enjoyed, and I woke up in time to see how it resolved.
-
Elmore is back, to bitch-slap me for sleeping through MISS PETTIGREW!
-
Hi, DR Edisaurus. Glad everything worked out so well and was meaningful and helpful for the family and friends.
-
People come and go so quickly here!
-
Hi, Sing!
-
It's a beautiful sunny day out. We're going to pick up rocks, and more plants from our gardening show producer, who should give us a drawing to know where to plant what she gave us almost a month ago.
-
I'm off to feed the birds, then feed myself.
-
The tough thing about feeding the birds, surprisingly, is not chewing up the worms, but getting the birds to hold still.
-
And the word of the day is: YESTREEN!
And The Song Of The Day and Night Is: LAST NIGHT WHEN WE WERE YOUNG
-
Good morning, all! I've been in and out of the apartment with the laundry. Will this madness ever cease? I fear, of course, that now it's all personal madness and my obesessions are the problem, but I'll worry about that later.
Today, I have tons more writing on THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER. I worked my proverbial butt off yesterday, finished an acceptable version of the Act One critical notes and sent them off for safety, then dealt with some questions from Miles Kreuger about this forthcoming Vicpotr Herbert biography.
After that, I watched a bit of AMERICAN IN PARIS, which reconfirmed my general dislke of the film, and then I watched some of the bonus disc for SLINGS & ARROWS, a rather pathetic collection of odds and ends from a good series.
DR edisaurus, thank you for the call the other day. I did not return it because, seeing you little these days around HHW, I figured you were really busy. You should of course be bitchslapped for sleeping through the charming MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY. I want to see it again.

THE CLOSER very vague spoiler....
This week we had our yearly phone conference with James Duff, creator of THE CLOSER, to outline what will be going on this season.
I'm happy to report that all of the cast members will be back (there was a question about one of them) and there will be a recurring guest star who should be great fun, if the contract gets finalized, and should be a nice foil for Brenda.
There will also be another "Flynn and Provenza" episode!
A murder suspect in a previous season makes a return appearance. I think a lot of people expected that last season, but I'm happy to know this actor will be back!
And the premiere episode should hit home with many people in LA.
That's all I can say for risk of spoiling anything!
-
Good morning!
It's gray outside right now as I think we may be in for some showers. Cooler today and tomorrow as well with highs in the 50s.

Thank you for these. I'm guessing I know which murder suspect you mean as you and I talked about this some months ago, and if it's the actor I'm thinking of, this makes me very, VERY excited.
I do love Flynn and Provinza, so this is also very good news.

Today I'll be finishing up the HD-DVD of APOLLO 13 and the third season box set of NUMB3RS. Tonight I will be watching something on either Blu-ray or HD-DVD prior to TORCHWOOD, but I haven't decided what as yet.
Today's mail may also determine what I put in the player later this evening.

Tomorrow morning I will be working on my taxes, one of the dreaded annual tasks one must perform. I've had to wait so late this year due to the brokerage's lately acquired information on some offshore sales results that were different from the originally released figures.
That'll be about three hours tomorrow morning given over to that. Hopefully, though, I can e-file and then be done with them for another year.

I got up at 6:30 am on a Saturday...that is just wrong.
Now I would like to go back to bed, however I must shower and shave and hie myself to the south of Salem to take Mustafa out to The Original Pancake House for breakfast and to look through assorted job announcements that I printed off for him.
-
I shall now be on my way to the Heim of Ana for a four-hour rehearsal, a two-hour break, and a three-hour set build during which I will be posting a running or, at the very least, walking commentary.

DR Elmore:

Thank you, DR MattH. That does make me happy.
Your "street" has me thinking about other nouns becoming verbs that I think are hilarious:
Detrain
Deplane
Plate
They've become the verbal shorthand of computer and texting (another verb!) lingo: How R U?

What is she going to speak about, children's libraries?

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And, actually, I've been up for a while. I wanted and tried to sleep in today, but my body got me out of bed a little after 8:00. However, since the rest of the apartment was still asleep, I used that "extra" hour or so to enjoy the silence and to have the downstairs to myself. I had my oatmeal, washed my bowl, read the newspaper, read the latest issued of "New York" magazine... And not a single single singer or piece of hard-to-read sheet music in sight. AHhhhhhhh... :)
-
OH!
And I also decided to do this...
-
DR Ron Pulliam - I hope that you are not up at this ungodly hour because of sinus activity. :(
No. I am "spring cleaning". I was off all day Friday and spent the day clearing out/cleaning out clutter and debris from "life."
After achieving critical mass in piling up stuff to either toss or wash, I tossed out the trash and began washing stuff. I was waiting for my last load of the evening/morning to be done when I engaged in keyboard activity.
I now have loading and unloading activities to perform. Loading my car for stuff going to storage, loading my car for stuff going to my office for future auction, and loading my car for stuff to donate to charity. Each load is a different trip.
Tomorrow, major dusting followed by cleaning of the carpets.
Monday will be a day of rest/relaxation and, given what I've thrown out/given away, possible regrets.
-
Peanut Butter Cookies and my now "signature" Oatmeal-Chocolate Chip-Pecan Cookies.
-And I believe the "air" from the oven wafting through the apartment acted as a sort of alarm clock for my roomies. ;)
-
And after what I just received in the mail this morning, it appears that I currently have only one outstanding invoice yet to be paid (to me). :)! *Of course, due to a change in office personnel, some of the payments I received today were almost two months late, however, since the rent is due next week, I guess that was a good thing. ;)

Add to my TOD list:
Mr. Minnelli's "An American in Paris" -- exquisitely filmed in Technicolor, it's a joyous explosion of color and light and music. The Gershwin score is magnificently orchestrated and performed. By no stretch of the imagination a perfect film, it's overlong and has an Oscar-winning screenplay that was not worthy of a nomination. What it does have is a glorious "I Got Rhythm" with Gene Kelly and some adorable kids, a hauntingly beautiful "Our Love is Here to Stay" pas de deux by the rvierside between Kelly and Leslie Caron; an infectiously delightful "I'll Build A Stairway to Paradise" with Georges Guetary on a stairway featuring director Vincente Minnelli's landmark lighted-stair-step effect; and one of the screen's great leaps of imagination -- the "An American in Paris" ballet featuring sets designed to recreate great works by French artists brought to scintillating life by Minnelli, Caron and a terrific Hollywood corps de ballet. There are dollops of kitsch, sappy sentiment, a rather sad character played by Nina Foch, and more than one or two groans liberally strewn throughout, but they never affect the musical presentation except, perhaps, in the numbers featuring Oscar Levant...but then when did anyone ever capture the sardonic humor and wit that Oscar Levant was supposed to have been famous for. Dated, yes. But its great moments are truly great.

As for the Topic of the Day...
Off the top of my head - which is currently in a cookie-baking-induced haze - the three that come to mind right now for me are:
"An American In Paris"
"The King & I"
"Tommy"
And I guess I'd have to add my sentimental favorite - and source of my first audition song - "Flower Drum Song". :)
-
Well, I have some cleaning up to do. The bowls, cookie sheets and baking utensils are already washed, dried and (almost) put away, but now I need to get myself all washed, dried and put away. ;)

DR Jose, those peanut butter cookies look yummy, baked just the way I like them.
I was searching for a pattern among the cookie sheets. I thought I detected batches of 12, but then one batch had only 11, and a couple of batches seemed to have only 9 or 10. So....hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........
I guess the baker has some prerogatives. ;D
-
I've been working on my reports and listening to "Windflowers: The Songs of Jerome Moross." Philip Chaffin began "Ridin' On The Breeze" and I totally lost it. It's like "The Cowboy Waltz" sung by Mr Guy Haines: somethng in the performance, the text, and the music reaches into your chest, grabs your heart, and tears it out.
DR Ron Pulliam and I will have to disagree on AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, even though my beloved Johnny Green worked on it: I don't like the musical arrangements, I detest the Big Ballet primarily because I think Irene Sharaff's work is ugly, I love Leslie Caron in everything but this. I did like Georges Guetary and Nina Foch.

DR Cilla, I’m sorry about your squirrel. In the past we have become attached to some of our backyard visitors.
Thanks. I know it sounds goofy, but he was so unique. It was definitely him. There are a couple squirrels out there today, but none of them are even going near the bird feeder. Twinkletoes would have been dangling there all day.
-
I am glad I got some good photos of him yesterday. I've got to work with them a little beacuse shooting through the screen is difficult. I may frame a couple of the best ones of the cats looking at him

DR Ron Pulliam - I guess I'm flattered in a sense that you chose to pay such close attention to the "patterns" on my cookie sheets, so, in return for your attention, I offer you the following breakdown:
I ended up with 35 Peanut Butter Cookies this time round. The original recipe actually yields 18 large(!) cookies, but cookies that large just don't seem conducive to "friendly" distribution. So, instead of using a 2 oz. scoop/disher, I used a 1 oz. one which sometimes yields me 36 cookies, sometimes 37, sometimes 35. By the time I had taken the picture, I had already bagged up some of them.*
As for the Oatmeal-Chocolate Chip-Pecan Cookies, this morning I ended up with 46 cookies - which would explain the batch of 10 on one sheet. The original recipe - which I doubled this morning - is supposed to yield about 36 cookies (so I should have ended up with 72 cookies, give or take a few), however, I make them slightly larger than the "rounded teaspoon" called for in the recipe. (Again, I used my 1 oz. disher.)
*Since I had forgotten to adjust my baking time accordingly due to the smaller size of the cookies I was making, I ended up with one sheet getting a little "dark" on the bottom. So, as soon as that batch was cool enough, I went ahead and tasted one just to see if tasted burnt. It did taste a little burnt, but more like burnt caramel, rather than burnt flour. Needless to say, the over-baked ones are not going to the theatre, but they should be good crumbled over some vanilla ice cream sometime later today. ;)
-
Tonight is going to be a blast. Paul's show is graffiti and litter. There has been a huge campaign here to stamp out both litter and graffiti. So, we are going to do a mock protest...picket with signs saying "Litter is a sin" "Stamp out graffiti" "Stencils aren't art" etc. Paul will LOVE it. It's right in line with his sense of humor. Then he'll see all of us wearing stenciled clothes of either his face or the logo of the show...a rat.
I'm taking my camera and decided today what to give him for his 60th birthday. I have photos of all of his public art in progress and the finished product. I'm going to take my camera tonight and then start doing a book for him. In addition to photos, I'm going to make stencils of some of the photos and put them in the book too. I've watched him for so long that I know how to do it. It will be a really big project, but I have until May 30 to complete it. The photo part will be easy, it's just the rest that will take me time. I'm looking forward to it.
-
DR Jane - The Peanut Butter Cookie recipe I use is sort of unique. First of all, the dough is mixed up, then scooped out into balls, then those are placed in the freezer to harden up for at least 30 minutes before baking. They have a relatively high peanut butter to flour ratio (1-1/2 cups of PB to 1 cup of flour), so they need to firm up a bit before baking in order to help their "spread" as they bake. -The recipe also calls for 2 cups of brown sugar, 2 eggs, 12 tablespoons of just-melted butter, (and 1-1/2 teaspoons of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of vanilla and 1 cup of coarsely chopped peanuts),so it's a very loose dough and needs the time in the freezer to firm up. -The very nice thing about this part is that you can also make up a batch way in advance, and then bake them whenever you want to have a just-out-of-the-oven peanut butter cookie.
Secondly, when the cookies first come out of the oven, they are still quite fragile. They have to cool before you can pick one up off of the cookie sheet without it falling apart in your hand. Otherwise, it would be like eating "molten" dough. Ouch!

-
Quite possibly...from near the end of season one?
Yes, m'am, as in J. O'M.
-
I've had a nice afternoon of viewing.
I began with two NUMB3RS episodes to complete the third season box set. The first was a good adventure tale with a truck full of $50 million and $2 million worth of drugs for the diseased in Africa hijacked by a gang and being chased not only for by FBI but also by a company who claimed the $50 million by rights belonged to it.
-
Thanks. I know it sounds goofy, but he was so unique. It was definitely him. There are a couple squirrels out there today, but none of them are even going near the bird feeder. Twinkletoes would have been dangling there all day.
Why Twinkletoes was so agile:
Quick and nimble, tree squirrels are able to make their seemingly gravity-defying movements through the trees primarily because of the structure of their feet and ankles. Flexible and rotatable, the joints of their ankles can instantaneously adjust to most any surface, while their slender toes with sharp, pointed claws enable them to hold on. Thus, squirrels can easily accomplish feats, such as descending trees headfirst, at an astonishing pace with very little effort.
I have my own version who constantly delights by hanging upside-down to nibble at the caged bird-seed bar. He also enjoys a total upside gymnastic to defeat the "squirrel proof" bird feeder that would close up if he stepped on one of the perches. Who said "dumb beasts"? (While he is engaged in enjoying the birds food, they, in turn, are making frequent trips to his squirrel food box to steal corn and peanuts).

The second episode, the season finale, involved the introduction of a spy list called the Janus List spilled by a former MI-6 agent who had been poisoned and was dying. One of the names on the list was a HUGE, HUGE surprise cliffhanger for the end of the season. Since I'm not watching the show, I have no idea how this was resolved, but since the spy was a member of Don's FBI team, it was a big shock. I have to assume that this person was undercover in some way and not really a Chinese spy. Guess I'll have to be on the lookout for the Season 4 box set. Since it's a Paramount show, I should get it later this year to review.
-
Next, I finished watching APOLLO 13 on HD-DVD. Like '1776,' we go into the film knowing how it's going to turn out, and yet so craftily has the movie been put together that it's still super-suspenseful and a tremendously emotional experience watching it.

I finished my afternoon of viewing by watching a CLOSER episode. Since we were talking about Flynn and Provenza this morning, what better way to anticipate this than by watching their episode from Season 2 "To Protect and Serve," which is one of the most entertaining from the second season.
-
Page Five Ruby Slippers Dance!!!
-
Still haven't decided what I'll be watching when I go back down but it'll be one of two popcorn movies: either DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE on Blu-ray or THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK on HD-DVD.

There's more than one?
You betcha, Red Ryder.
Each Oscar nominated for Best Film, each an Oscar winner for Best Art Direction.

I have to assume that this person was undercover in some way and not really a Chinese spy.
The first two episodes of Season 4 are used to unwind this story arc - a fun journey even if the destination is presumed.

Heading down now to do a last minute check with my tax info that I'll need tomorrow morning when I work on the returns, and then I'll head back to the home theater for more viewing.

I'm with DR Elmore re Moulin Rouge. The first is wonderful visually but the dialogue is so "wooden". I hope never to see the Baz production again.

Speaking of squrrels, we have a lot of activity here in the morning, when I line the deck railing with bird food and peanuts. Then the cats sit with me on the screened-in prorch and watch the action while I have my morning cereal.
Who needs HDTV?

And last night, we noticed two guys cruising the neighborhood very slowly. They stopped in front of our house and seemed like they were up to some suspicious activity. (We have a lot of car break-ins at night.)
Turned out they were workers remodeling a house in the neighborhood and had caught a squirrel in the attic, in a Have-A-Heart trap. They were looking for somewhere to release it and thought our yard was the perfect place. They were quite embarrased to be caught, and they were afraid of the squirrel, explaiining that they were "city boys".
My DH told them that squirrel are very territorial and he might not survive, and then directed them to a nearby park.

Bonnie and Buster ("The Blonds") enjoy sitting on my bed and calmly watching both the birds and squirrels - but let the local cat stray into sight and all hell breaks loose! A large well-fed white cat likes to use our yard as a short-cut to the wetlands next door - he never bothers with our livestock.

Today's rehearsal was just technical stuff- we did all the scene shifts, which is a lot, then ran music, and I also blocked the very end of the show.
-
We all went to a place called Chili's for lunch. It was the first time the entire company has dined together. I had the mixed appetizers, which I must say were out of this world - Buffalo wings (all drumettes), spinach/artichoke dip, and best of all the Southwestern Egg Rolls. We'll be going back there quite often now.
-
Now I'm back at the theater, watching the mandatory build and posting and entering all our little changes into our master script.
-
There's a lot of activity going on around me.

Where in tarnation IS everyone?

You'd think it was the final Saturday in March.

I gotta tell you.

Will we never get to page six?

DR Cilla, I hope tonight is the blast you are expecting. It sounds fun. I’m expecting photos.
Paul should love your 60th birthday gift, good luck putting it together.

We're STILL on page five?

I have a question for you Oregon dwellers: I'm wondering if the Paolo designer Paul Scardina of Portland worked on a production of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE with me around 1975?

DR Jane - The Peanut Butter Cookie recipe I use is sort of unique. They have a relatively high peanut butter to flour ratio
No wonder they look so good :) and explains why peanut butter cookies are often tasteless.
The recipes I remember are from Skippy. One doesn’t have any flour, the other just 1 Tablespoon to 1-1/2 peanut butter. Neither use brown sugar. I bet that adds a nice rich flavor. I like that your recipe goes into the freezer until baking. Keith isn’t a peanut butter cookie fan & I only eat one or two at a time so I rarely bake them, about once every 10 years.
To recap your ingredients:
1-1/2 cups peanut butter
1 cup flour
2 cups of brown sugar
2 eggs
12 tablespoons of just-melted butter
1-1/2 teaspoons of baking soda
1 teaspoon of vanilla
1 cup of coarsely chopped peanuts
Do you use chunky or creamy peanut butter?
Are the dry ingredients sifted together or is everything tossed into the bowl at once? How long & at what temp should I bake them?
Do you ever bake them without the peanut pieces? I don’t normally keep peanuts in the house. I always, almost always, have chunky peanut butter as well as the rest of the ingredients.

It is now time for me to finish the Bollywood movie I began last night, but was too tired to finish...actually it isn't a Bollywood film as it is not in Hindi and was not filmed in Bombay...it is in Bengali and was filmed in Calcutta which is one of the two centers of Bengal cinema..those filmed in Dhaka are referred to as Dhallywood...I don't know of the Calcutta films are called that as well...I do know that most Bengali films have less music and are more artsy then the average Indian film...however todays film HANABARI fit right in with what the masses enjoyed...it is a 1952 horror film about an ape creature who roams about a dilapidated old mansion...I am loving this movie even though it is without any subtitles!!!

Lots of hammering and drilling and screwing (get your mind out of the gutter) going on around me. I'm sitting here like so much fish trying to enter all these fixes into the script. The final script I give our licensing agency has to be perfect - and that includes the blocking and everything.

Forgive me, but this movie bores the stuffing out of me.

Breathtaking as always, Laura. Thank you.

Thanks, TCB.

DR Laura I love taking a photographic walk with you.
I must admit to becoming restless when walking with photographers who stop every two minutes & I want to keep walking. ;D

This is an area that was devastated by a wildfire a couple of years ago. Many saguaros were burned or had died and fallen over. I have never seen so many cactus skeletons (of all kinds) in one place. The wildflowers are the first things to come back after a fire.
-
The area is absolutely beautiful!
-
Yes, it is now. The winter rains brought lots of flowers this spring.
-
It would be nice if you could have that much rain every winter.
-
It would indeed.
Lots of rain in the winter makes lots of wildfires in the summer, though.

Hi all! What lovely pictures, DearREaderLaura!
My big news of the day is that I went and bought my bed today. It's not the name brand but the very same thing. I got the adjustable type which I think I dearly needed.
-
It will be delivered next Saturday which is fine with me because I need to clean up my room and discover what all is under the old bed.
-
Hello DR DANISE!!
-
Oh, and it's a full size. I measured and my room just couldn't handle a queen sized bed. I'm a little disapointed about that but it is what it is.
-
Hello DR DANISE!!
Hello right back at ya, DR JRand57! :D
-
In some areas of the country, the play is known as JUNO AND THE YOU KNOW.
Lovely photos from DR LAURA....the cactii are very tall!!!!
DR CILLA LIZ - sorry to hear about your yard friend.....it least you spared him the fate of becoming a grease spot on the street.
I am hoping we have a fashion report for DR CILLA LIZ on the Art Event she is attending this evening.
-
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR....I am trying to watch TORCHWOOD, but the more than half an hour, Comcast has been showing me a message that says:
One Moment Please, This Channel will be available shortly.
-
Hello right back at ya, DR JRand57! :D
:)
-
That's as bad as "Please stand by". I prefer to sit.
-
Hi, Danise! Great to see you here. Congratulations on the new bed.
-
Well, I'm sure Bear will love the new bed when it gets here. I know that I just couldn't take the old one anymore.
Since I got my breathing machine, I've been sleeping on my back and it's been killing me. I could hardly make it to the edge of the bed this morning. I decided that enough was enough.
-
Hi TCB! How are you doing? How is your back after all that rowing the other day?
-
This is where I bought my new bed:
http://mattressdr.com/
It's one of the Dormia brand.
-
Hi TCB! How are you doing? How is your back after all that rowing the other day?
It was probably pretty foolish of me to risk my back like that rowing around Lake Washington, and I have been paying for it all week. The things we will do for money.
-
This is where I bought my new bed:

It was probably pretty foolish of me to risk my back like that rowing around Lake Washington, and I have been paying for it all week. The things we will do for money.
But sometimes you just have to do it. I think you may have the same bad habits that I have. Like wanting a roof over my head and food in the fridge.
Of course, I have two dogs to support. Lord help me if I ran out of dog food! ;D
-
Hi Danise. CONGRATULATIONS on your new bed. Vibes it is everything you are hoping for.
-
I have to tell you all about the sonic boom we had the other night when the shuttle landed.
It was so loud it sounded like someone was pounding on my front door. I was watching "Ghost Hunters" at the time and it scared me so bad that I had to change the channel! I couldn't find anyone at the door and that scared me as well.
By luck, the channel I changed to was Bay News 9 and they were going on about the sonic boom /landing so it gave me some peace of mind.
The dogs didn't even bark or even lift their heads--which was part of what scared me so badly.
-
That is a great story. One day you will laugh about it.
-
Hi Danise. CONGRATULATIONS on your new bed. Vibes it is everything you are hoping for.
Thanks Jane. I hope so too. It sure felt comfortable when I tried it. Just like the six thousand dollar bed I laid on last weekend but for less then a third of the price.
-
That is a great story. One day you will laugh about it.
Oh, I'm laughing now. But at the time it sure did give me a good fright.
-
Space Shuttle Sonic Boom - I think that will be a dance number in my new musical.
-
Now I want one! ;D
Well, they do ship nation wide. They even sell on Ebay. That was one of the reasons I went to see them--because of all the good feedback they got. Only 1 negitive.
I was just lucky that they are located in Tampa. All the way on the other side of Tampa out by the airport but it wasn't a bad ride.
I honestly don't think I would have bought from them if they were not local. For something like this, I think you have to go and see/feel what your getting. It may not be six thousand but it's still a nice chunk of change.
The other nice things is that being local, they are going to not only deliver my new bed but they will take away the old one. I didn't know what I could have done about that if they didn't.
I can't lift heavy stuff anymore by myself. I don't want to take the chance on hurting myself. I learned that lesson from the years of all the pain I saw poor Mom go through.
-
Space Shuttle Sonic Boom - I think that will be a dance number in my new musical.
I'm thinking more along the lines of "Who's that pounding on my door!" ;D :D
-
Cilla, I was so sorry to hear about your yard friend. I've had that happen a couple of times. It always hurts.
-
I am sorry, too, Cillaliz, about your squirrel. I love squirrels.
-
Hi Danise!
-
I've been meaning to tell DR TD that I'm reading the book he bought me when I was in Pittsburgh. I'm about half way through Terry Pratchetts "Maskerade". It's very good and funny.
Thank you very much!
-
Hi Danise!
Hi DearReaderLaura! Such lovely photos!
I have some sunrises that I've taken while waiting for the bus that I've wanted to share but I just never seem to get around to resizing them to post.
-
COPS SPOILER
People are doing things they shouldn't be doing and getting arrested for it.
-
I often see his books & yet I have never read one. I'll add Maskerade to my list of books to read.
-
We had a guy who made the paper. He was arrested on a very minor charge and was released on bond. He wanted to get away from the jail so badly that he tried to car jack a lady in the parking lot.
He wasn't free even 15 minutes when they had to re arrest him. When asked why he did what he did, he said that he didn't have anyone to pick him up and he didn't want to walk home!
Needless to say, he did not go free on bond the 2nd time. ::) ??? :o
-
I often see his books & yet I have never read one. I'll add Maskerade to my list of books to read.
You'll enjoy it. :)
-
DR LAURA that guy they were looking for was hiding in a garbage bin.
And MAD Tv is new tonight!!!
Wonder if they got the set built yet for BRAIN FROM PLANET EX?
-
I think this project of mine, clearing out paperbacks & making a list of all the books I've read, will never be completed. Some of the books by prolific authors I don't recall reading, & they don't look used. I like to keep my stack of unread books separate & Keith has a habit of putting them away. Not just away in one section of the bookcase, but away where they look good. ::)
-
Off to watch Michael Clayton.

And you can have it!! :P

My boss puts a green check mark on the inside cover.
There was a day when I remembered every book I read. Now, I see books I know I read but have no idea as to what they like.
Have good evening, Jane!

Hi, all, I'm home!
Thanks to DRs JRand, Singdaw, Elmore, FJL, and TPunk for the travel vibes. Everything went smoothly and my flight arrived in Cincinnati right on time. I am glad to be home and glad that I don't have to go back to work until Tuesday.

Hurray! ;D
-
Congrats on the new bed Danise.
If a certain new job opens up within my agency, and I get promoted into it, I plan on buying a new bed to celebrate.
-
And you can have it!! :P
Sadly I cannot. After losing 8 pounds then gaining 2 back, I am back counting points.
-
Sorry to hear about your squirrel friend Cillaliz.
-
Glad that your home, safe and sound DR Ginny!
-
I had an enjoyable and productive day. I finally made it out the door to dance class (sadly no Ant). I met up with a friend who's volunteer shift at GMHC ends at the same time my dance class does- it's become our habit to meet for a drink or bite to eat afterward. Then I did some shopping and errand running and now I am happily ensconced in my home.
-
DR TPunk, was I right about Mimi?
-
I have to be well rested for tomorrow- I'm going into work to accompany 7 of our youngsters to a children's theater production of Zombie Prom. Vibes please that everyone maintains their composure throughout the 2 hour production- myself included. :)
-

But you're still down SIX!!! ;D

Thanks Jane. I hope so too. It sure felt comfortable when I tried it. Just like the six thousand dollar bed I laid on last weekend but for less then a third of the price.
Did you actually go to one of Mattress DR stores and try it out?
-
Zombie Prom composure vibes for DR TPUNK....
-
Time for MAD Tv.....I am ready to laugh!
-
DR TPunk, was I right about Mimi?
You were indeed. We actually have our first rehearsal tomorrow evening. I'm a bit on the fence at this point as to whether I'll stay in the production. I have one very serious conflict with the rehearsal schedule during hell week. And judging from the casting of the of the other hotbox girls, I'm weary as to how challenging the choreography will be. I don't remember most of them dancing particularly well during the callback, but I suppose we shall see. I'm not going to rush to judgement but hopefully tomorrow's dance rehearsal will be a good indicator.
-
Did you actually go to one of Mattress DR stores and try it out?
Yes. It was on the other side of town but at least it was local.
-
COPS SPOILER
People are doing things they shouldn't be doing and getting arrested for it.
Laura, are you watching television??? :o :o :o
-
Zombie Prom was described to me as a cross between Grease and Rocky Horror, spoofy-like. I hope the kids can get into it and that it doesn't provoke any psychotic episodes. :)
-
I love my job, never a dull moment. ;D

I am glad you made it home safely, Ginny.
-
Well, it's getting late for me as well. I have a lot of work to do tomorrow to get my room cleaned up for next week.
Have a good evening all!
-
It's the only thing I purposely turn on the tv to watch. Sometimes when I can't sleep, I will lie on the sofa and turn on the news to bore me to sleep.
-
Thanks, DRs Danise and TCB. I love to travel, but am always glad to be home.
DR TPunk - vibes for tomorrow's field trip!
-
Zombie Prom was described to me as a cross between Grease and Rocky Horror, spoofy-like. I hope the kids can get into it and that it doesn't provoke any psychotic episodes. :)
And speaking of Zombie Prom (well, sort of), I watched a very entertaining documentary on playwright Charles Busch. It was called THE LADY IN QUESTION IS CHARLES BUSCH. I enjoyed it, but found parts of it rather repetitive.

Good Evening!
Well, after dropping of some cookies at the Mary Poppins crew, I headed down to 32nd Street - a.k.a. Koreatown - and had lunch at Mandoo Bar. -Those were some delicious dumplings!
Then I decided to walk down 5th Avenue... Then across 23rd Street... Then down 8th Ave... Then down Hudson... Then back across Christopher... Etc., etc., etc... I had a nice walk today. ;)
-
DR TPunk - A "children's" version of Zombie Prom? Hmm... I like the show, but I'm not sure I'd call it a "children's show". ???
-
Hate to be a wussburger, but I'm so-o-o-o tired.
'night!

Appropriate for 12 year olds, do you think?

From what I've read about it, it's nothing that these kids haven't seen- either in movies or real life.
-
Good night everyone.
-
Good night, TPunk. And good luck with the precious children tomorrow!!

DR Jane - The recipe I use is from Pam Anderson's "CookSmart" cookbook.
Here's the basic procedure:
In a small bowl, combine 1 cup all-purpose flour and 1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda, then set aside.
In a medium bowl, mix 1-1/2 cups creamy peanut butter (she recommends Skippy), 2 cups packed light brown sugar, and 12 tablespoons (1-1/2 sticks) unsalted butter melted just until warm, not hot, until smooth.
In a small bowl, mix 2 eggs and 1 teaspoon vanilla, then add to peanut butter mixture, and beat with a rubber spatula until smooth. Add flour mixture and 1 cup coarsely chopped to peanut butter mixture, and stir until well combined.
Line a 9"x13" pan with plastic wrap. Using a 2 oz. (1/4-cup) spring-action ice-cream scoop to form dough balls and scoop into pan. (About 14 balls will fit in first layer.) Lay a sheet of plastic wrap on top and make another layer. Freeze until solid, about 30 minutes.
Place oven racks in the upper-middle and lower-middle positions and preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
Place 9 cookies on each sheet. After about 15 minutes, rotate cookie sheets top to bottom, and front to back. Continue cooking cookies for another 3 to 5 minutes until cookies are golden but not dark brown. Remove cookie sheets from oven, and place on cooling racks for at least five minutes before sliding the cookies (still on the parchment) off the cookie sheets to cool completely.
*I use a 1 oz. scoop to make a smaller cookie, and adjust the cooking time down to 10-12 minutes total.

And while I was walking around today, I saw this... -Which should bring back some nice memories for DR edisaurus. :)
Ohhhhh...salivate....I could use one of those right about now!
I just got back from seeing AVENUE Q. It was a yucky, rainy night and so we went down to the Fox box office, (which is now just down the road from us!) and they had 2 good seats so I snapped them up. We found a free parking space, we didn't have to pay Ticketbastard, and we had a cheap dinner at Quiznos so I felt justified in getting the good seats, which we only $20 more apiece than the nosebleed seats.
We got there early, so we went up and visited with my mom's best friend (she's kind of like an aunt to us) who ushers for many of the shows. She's always at the same station, so it's easy to find her. She had already ushered for the matinee and enjoyed it very much.
I had the original cast album but didn't know about a lot of the staging. I think our favorite thing in the show was the "Bad Idea Bears". So funny!

As always, loved the exquisite photographs, DR Laura.

DR Jose, did you have any macarons? And if so, what flavor?
-
And another pic for DR edisaurus!

I've been an admirer of Sharaff's work most of my life. I think her costumes are glorious. Horses for ..etc.
-
The Shake Shack looks rather quiet this evening!
-
Thanks.

And another pic for DR edisaurus!
You are TORTURING me!!!
I'm going to have a Girl Scout cookie. No offense, vixmom, but, well...it's not the same...
-
I began my evening with DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE in Blu-ray. It's always been the weakest of the DIE HARD movies, and the Blu-ray doesn't alter that fact, but it's still a lot of fun, another guilty pleasure I always enjoy returning to.
The various DVDs (and the laserdisc) of the movie have always looked rotten: grainy, noisy, full of ugly edge enhancement.
The Blu-ray is a thing of beauty. The graininess and noise are all gone, and the edge ringing is all but nonexistent. The Blu-ray also has the highest end sound possible in its DTS-HD Master Audio lossless soundtrack. So the sound was clean, effortless, stupendous.
-
DR Ron Pulliam - I guess I'm flattered in a sense that you chose to pay such close attention to the "patterns" on my cookie sheets... By the time I had taken the picture, I had already bagged up some of them.
"bagged"....was that a euphemism?
;D
-
Love those beautiful photos, DR Laura!
I meant to ask, what was the bird photo you posted a few days ago? It looks like our killdeer.
-
While waiting for TORCHWOOD to come on, I watched about 30 more minutes of BLADES OF GLORY. It's beyond ridiculous, but I'm an hour into the film now so I guess I'll finish it at some point this weekend.
-
DR Jose, did you have any macarons? And if so, what flavor?
Well, funny you should ask. ;)
I believe my selection today included:
Pistachio/Lemon
Cassis/Chocolate
Pear Brandy
Cointreau
Lemon/Chocolate
Mocha
-I think. They're actually still sitting in their cute little container.
-
TORCHWOOD had a unique and very entertaining (but somber) episode. I really liked it.
[sigh] Only three new episodes left for this season.
-
Forgive me, but this movie bores the stuffing out of me.
[/b]
Forgiven.... ;)
-
I rewatched an episode from Season 1 of CSI: NY. This one featured two cases: the murders of a hip-hop DJ and a top fashion designer. Neither a great mystery (although the DJ featured a pretty good resolution).
-
And I ended my evening rewatching the GREY'S ANATOMY episode from Season 2 when we first got to meet the strikingly handsome Dr. Mark Sloan (Eric Dane). I only got halfway through the episode, but it is a favorite from that season. Actually, I think the entirety of Season 2 of GREY'S is about as close to a perfect season that any dramatic show has ever had.

It is a good thing I don't live in NY DR JoseP, because you would constantly lure me at all hours of the day and night with your cooking!
Good thing I had some cookies in my freezer.
Well, DR MBarnum, it's good to know that I can lure you with something. ;)
-
And another pic for DR edisaurus!
DR Jose, what is the gold dust that is on some of the macarons made of? I see our French baker, Luc, using stuff that looks like gold leaf or gold flakes. My DH was convinced it was ornamental, not edible, but I couldn't imagine them putting something like that on a cake if it wasn't supposed to be eaten.
-
OH! MY! GOD!
That Cassis/Chocolate Madeleine was AMAZING!!!!!!

It's edible gold leaf/dust.

I'll be right over!

At times like these, I am sad and yet relieved that I don't live in NY.

I accomplished a great deal today. I have more loading up my car and taking to storage a few things that wouldn't fit in today's trip. BUT...I've already cleaned half my carpet and am ahead of the game, so to speak. It's a wonderful feeling to get this stuff done and to re-order my life.
My bedroom is my next target. There are things here that need carting out and the carpet needs cleaning. I've made a nice pile of clothing for charity, but I'm looking at some under-bed containers that also have stuff I might ought to consider ridding myself of. As long as I've got the energy/determination to do this, I am going to sally forth and do it.
-
The pictures of our Dear Jose's cookies were also mouthwatering, especially remembering the ones we took home with us from NY. It made our flight home bearable!
-
At times like these, I am sad and yet relieved that I don't live in NY.

The reason the macaroons remained intact (until just a few minutes ago) is because the Shack Attack consisted of the following:
Chocolate Frozen Custard
Hot Fudge
Chocolate Truffle Cookie Dough
Valrhona Chocolate Chunks
Chocolate Sprinkles
YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
DR edisaurus - Glad you liked Avenue Q. The one set of visuals that still manages to crack me up - and still sort of shock me - are the ones that go with "You Can Be As Loud As The Hell You Want When You're Making Love". ;D
-
At times like these, I am sad and yet relieved that I don't live in NY.

I feel that way about a couple of places I've lived or visited. One is Naples, Italy, where I lived for 9 1/2 years. I miss the FOOD so much. I took it so much for granted. I'd KILL for a real (make that REAL) pizza Margherita!
And Rome and Florence are places I'd love to casually visit for several days again. And then there is Vicenza, Italy. I lived there for two years and I have so many strong memories of Italy associated with it because it was the first place I lived.
Athens, Greece, is a place my heart yearns for. Ditto London.
Sigh.
But I'm grateful to be where I am and so close to so much wonderful stuff. I've never been to New York, but hope to visit one day.

There are a bunch of photos from a Klamath Falls, Oregon, movie theatre up on EBAY.....if anyone remembers this place...I guess it's the Tower Theatre.

DS Betsy was just in KF last week on a business trip (or so she told me ;D). She was amazed to look up from the diner they were having lunch in to see an historic old building next door to them named Semon Hall. Semon is DS Betsy's maiden name.

I miss the FOOD so much. I took it so much for granted. I'd KILL for a real (make that REAL) pizza Margherita!
We had some of the best food of our lives in Rome, including a pizza with an egg in the middle, broccoli rabe and champagne gelato.
-
We at a Romano's Macaroni Grill this evening and all had very good food, though after having tried Betsy's mushroom ravioli, I wish I would have gotten that rather than the pizza I had.
-
We had some of the best food of our lives in Rome, including a pizza with an egg in the middle, broccoli rabe and champagne gelato.
I was a kid when my parents decided to "mature" me by giving me a Eurrail pass and a summer in Europe (my sister was living in Germany so I had family "nearby"). I went to Rome by myself and I remember I had an American Express gift certificate for some outdoor restaurant right by the Forum. The only thing my certificate would cover was something on the menu that looked quite exotic and sounded spectacular in Italian. When they brought it out, it was good ol' mac 'n' cheese. ;D
-
Yes, I probably posted a photo of a killdeer a couple days ago. I know I took one, so I probably posted it.
-
Good God, you know how to LIVE! Did you chose the ingredients yourself?
It's one of their own Concrete Creations. However, since today's featured frozen custard flavor was Coconut Caramel, I was very tempted to come up with my own. Next time...
*And tomorrow's flavor is Fluffer Nutter!
-
Since I'll be spending the better part of tomorrow morning doing my tax returns, I may be late getting on-line.
Heading down now to go to bed to save up some energy for tomorrow.
Good night!
-
DR Danise - Enjoy your new bed!

Ok, if those colorful things were Madelines...I must know where to get some!
-
Cilla, I sure hope that wasn't your friend Squirrel that you buried today :-[
When I worked on the 5th floor of the Justice bldg we had a squirrel who would come up to the window of one of the offices and knock on it each morning. That was our cue to feed him some peanuts! He came by every day for a year and then suddenly he never came back again. We were all very sad.
-
Ok, if those colorful things were Madelines...I must know where to get some!
Those are macarons from Madeleine Patisserie. Madeleines are more "little cakes".

Time for another Indian delight! This one is a Bollywood film, and it is a comedy about an Indian gal who was born and raised in London whose parents decide to arrange a marriage between her and a Punjabi guy, much to her dismay. It was a huge hit last year. NAMASTE LONDON starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif...I am about 1/2 hour into it and it is very funny!

And the fact that the film features these two actors in lead roles has NOTHING to do with why I chose to watch this film......
But it does have EVERYTHING to do with why this film will be pleasantly seared into my brain forever! ;D
-
Oh, gosh I hope those photos of Akshay Kumar and Upen Patel weren't too big!
-
Did I mention I found JUNO (the musical) searing, in addition to unsettling and harrowing?

It's been scientifically proven that each time I communicate with you, I lose a small but vital portion of my intellect.
Too bad your loss appears to be no one's gain ;D

Back from the build, a few cheesy potatoes from Gelson's, and watching a motion picture on DVD. I'm really, really tired. So, I'l just sit here like so much fish.

Just got a wonderful fan letter via e-mail re Nudie Musical. Some guy who grew up loving the film - always quoting its lines, singing the songs, etc. Very sweet. He's now a comedy writer in Canada and he sort of implies it was partially the film that led him there (to writing - not to Canada).
-
Thanks for the squirrel condolences. I appreciate it.
-
Everything tonight was great. It couldn't have gone better. Our mock protest was a big hit, there was a huge turnout at the art center, the gift shop wants me to sell my hats there (I've been talking to Paul about that) and the after party was still going when I left around midnight.
-
I took about 120 photos! Half way through the opening, the curator came up to me and handed me his card. He said that their official photographer was away and he wondered if he could get a copy of my photos. Who knows, maybe this could lead to something...
-
I downloaded my photos, but I'm really too tired to do anything more with them tonight. I'll post some tomorrow.
-
DR Cillaliz - :) Glad to hear that you had a wonderful evening all around!
-
And I'm off to bed myself now too...
Goodnight.
-
It is now time for me to finish the Bollywood movie I began last night, but was too tired to finish...actually it isn't a Bollywood film as it is not in Hindi and was not filmed in Bombay...it is in Bengali and was filmed in Calcutta which is one of the two centers of Bengal cinema..those filmed in Dhaka are referred to as Dhallywood....

I'd love to have those, though. I'm sure that they'd be a LOT better than my black shoes. :P

Tonight's show went quite well. :)

But I found out that the night they videorecorded was our free preview night, the night they took the pictures (http://www.capitalplayhouse.com/Photos/Side%20Show). :)

I know I made some kind of brain fart that night. :P I just can't remember which one it was. ::)
